What are the current TV shows with gay male characters? Part 3
by Anonymous | reply 600 | July 25, 2020 4:09 AM |
The Society is the 4th most watched show on Netflix in the UK right now. I'd like to see the numbers for other countries too. I want it to get a second season.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 4, 2019 1:49 PM |
r1 Well, it had one in the first season as well, so it would've been a step back if they suddenly decided to abandon that. Still, good news!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 4, 2019 1:59 PM |
I think it was running second a couple of weeks ago, r2. It has a fairly big social media following so think it will get a second season. The character of Grizz is especially popular. I suppose he has a fairly broad appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 4, 2019 2:16 PM |
Who is the couple in the gif at R1?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 4, 2019 2:18 PM |
R5 Do you mean OP? They're Andrew and Dylan from The Perfectionists.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 4, 2019 2:19 PM |
r6 Aw, they're cute. But there's another gif where the curly-haired guy is with another guy. So he has several boyfriends on that show?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 4, 2019 2:27 PM |
R7 He cheated on Andrew with another guy but they got back together.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 4, 2019 2:29 PM |
Actually, the guys in OP's gif and in r7 are the same, but yeah. Curly haired Dylan Walker's (Eli Brown) big secret on the show was that he cheated on his boyfried, Andrew (Even Bittencourt) with the murder victim, Nolan (Chris Mason).
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 4, 2019 3:06 PM |
r9 I know they're the same, I was thinking about this gif when I mentioned the other guy.

Black Mirror on Netflix has a gay-adjacent storyline in the episode "Striking Vipers", which dropped today. It's... confusing but I don't want to spoil it too much.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 5, 2019 4:33 PM |
Lifetime's new comedy show American Princess has some gay characters. One of them is "Richard Shakespeare", the gay sidekick of "Her Majesty the Queen".
I guess the show wasn't originally made for Lifetime since they consor all the cursing and a guy's naked ass shot in the second episode.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 5, 2019 4:46 PM |
They also got Tommy Dorfrman, playing the gay bff of the main character, in a recurring role. R15
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 6, 2019 2:17 AM |
Possible new gay storyline? I got a gay vibe from the trailer. Then again, I don't speak Spanish so what do I know lol.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 7, 2019 4:40 PM |
Tales of the City has just been released on Netflix. It has gay characters and a gay (male) storyline.

Eastenders will have a gay storyline this summer with Ben and Callum
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 8, 2019 8:29 AM |
Telenovela La Reina del Sur 2 will have a gay couple.

A new show starts 6/18 on OWN. It's called Ambitions & will have a gay couple.

Hollyoaks is adding a new gay character to its roster.
Actor Cerith Flinn will play "Dr. Levi Rochester" and become Scott Drinkwell's (Ross Adams) love interest.

Looks like Ackley Bridge will have gay characters.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 11, 2019 3:24 PM |
I just realized most of these shows are British. Once again we have to look across the pond for any gay content. I swear the UK is the only country that has more gay male characters than lesbians.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 11, 2019 3:25 PM |
[quote]Telenovela La Reina del Sur 2 will have a gay couple.
Well, with "queen" in the title ...
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 11, 2019 3:28 PM |
r24, thank you for the Ackley Bridge link. Wasn't aware of the show before and apparently it's in its third season. I love Jo Joyner in the crime comedy series Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators.
Once again DL doesn't disappoint.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 11, 2019 3:41 PM |
One of the stories in the last season of Ackley Bridge was centered around Naveed coming out gay - with his supposedly straight friend and crush Cory having sex with him.

Last night's American Princess had a decent amount of gay storyline in it.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 18, 2019 1:28 AM |
I Ctrl+F'd the previous thread and didn't see these two shows mentioned, so here they are.
1. Lodge 49 on AMC (first season now also on Amazon Prime) - don't want to spoil anything as it's pretty satisfying when it happens. Ten episodes, second season returns August 12.
2. High Maintenance on HBO - third season. Episode seven features an ADORABLE arc between a Latino construction worker and a barista. And episode nine has a story about a DLer and the things that come along with being an older gay man (in New York). You can just watch them in isolation like I did and skip the main arc entirely.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 19, 2019 12:20 AM |
Ambitions starts tonight on OWN. It's supposed to have a gay relationship/story.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 19, 2019 12:23 AM |
This show was mentioned last year already, but the new season of GLOW drops August 9th (on Netflix) and the trailer makes it look like Bash is finally leaving the closet and getting a male love interest. So Chris Lowell embracing the glitter in more ways than one should be fun to watch as he's a coked-up goofball most of the time.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 19, 2019 1:18 AM |
A new series started last week called Jett. I watched because it stars Giancarlo Esposito & Carla Gugino (sp?) I watched because I'm a huge fab of Esposito.
The first episode we had a quick male full frontal scene & some bare butts. The second episode we learned that the son of Esposito's character is gay. He had a gay pool party with bare asses. They then had a scene where he forced a guy to give him a blow job.
Even without the gay content I'd recommend the show if you like gritty crime shows.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 23, 2019 8:30 PM |
I was just about to mention Jett but decided against it because... man, it's a rough show. I hated just about everything about the first two episodes apart from the lighting, which is gorgeous. Definitely won't stick around for the third episode.
The inclusion of a gay crime guy is nice, though. We need more of that. The father of that character played another gay crime boss on Breaking Bad, although Vincent Gilligan said he didn't want that pointed out explicitly because it didn't really matter at the end of the day. So yeah, fuck him.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 23, 2019 9:18 PM |
*Sorry, that's Vince GIlligan. I don't know why I went all birth name on him...

R37
I enjoyed the show once I figured out what it was all about but then I like gritty crime dramas.
Speaking of gritty crime dramas, I LOVE the new drama City on a Hill. It's 10 times better than Jett and pure quality. Two episodes in & no gay content so far but Aldis Hodge's body is a fucking work of art & I am a huge Jonathan Tucker fan.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 23, 2019 10:00 PM |
r39 Wanted to check out City on a Hill but it seemed like such a straight boys' club sort of thing. Also, it's set in Boston, which repelled me immediately.
However, I'm also a huge Jonathan Tucker fan and will definitely watch it now. So thanks for pointing that out!

Years & Years starts tonight on HBO.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 24, 2019 12:07 PM |
Legion (on FX) started its final season yesterday. The gay agent was casually holding hands with his husband/co-worker at their workplace, discussing business. It was sweet and Hawley-surreal and definitely something I haven't seen on TV before.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 25, 2019 12:16 PM |
Strange Angel on CBS All Access has a gay guy as one of the lead characters, played by Rupert Friend. He's exploring his (closeted) homosexuality through Aleister Crowley's Thelema. Second season is currently airing.
First season had him in a gay bar and now they gave him an Egyptian lover. Though you can imagine these things are short-lived because... well, it's set in the early '40s L.A., so not exactly the optimal time period for us.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 28, 2019 12:57 AM |
I'm watching episode 2 of Euphoria.
A little kid finds his dad's porno tape stash. He watches one where his dad (McSteamy from Grey's) is putting his thumb in some guy's mouth & telling him to call him Daddy. He's then fucking him & telling him to call him Daddy.
The young son is now a handsome AF high school jock. He's in the high school locker room & showers. All the guys are nude with full frontal. Valls & dicks everywhere.
All of this is in the first 10 minutes.
WTF is this show?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 29, 2019 4:58 PM |

The new normal, hopefully. Those huge prosthetic schlongs were disappointing as men don't generally tend to walk around locker rooms sporting semis, but whatever, it's a start. Here's the discussion thread for this show.

Euphoria is really good and that sexually confused jock IS hot asf.
The new Scream on Vh-1 is sadly shitty but has a gay character.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 9, 2019 6:39 PM |
What/If has several gay characters plus male eye candy. The show is trashtastic though -- like Melrose Place. I suspect the writers are gay?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 9, 2019 6:41 PM |
R49 Lol, I know. I watched it. I actually liked it. Sure, it's trashy and campy and Renee does chew her scenes, but it's basically a primetime soap. You can't expect too much. It's good for what it is. Also, the gay storyline was done really well, it even included some nudity and a threesome.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 28, 2019 4:46 AM |
R53, The Boys is based on a comic book series by the same guy who wrote the one Preacher is based on. That guy is basically toxic masculinity manifested in human form, so I wouldn't expect any gay male content outside punchlines of anal rape jokes. While Eric Kripke being the showrunner will probably result in the worst excesses being blunted and characters being given more depth, I wouldn't look to it for representation.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 28, 2019 5:00 AM |
The Boys rather mocks toxic masculinity. There is a holier-than-thou closet case preaching Christian values but makes out with guys in some club.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | July 28, 2019 5:26 AM |
R59 It wallows in male stupidity and macho shitheadness
by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 28, 2019 5:53 AM |
I agree with r59. The showrunners knew they needed to tweak the source material a bit in 2019. So the female characters are more fleshed out, rape has been cut (and possibly subverted), and there's only one anal joke that I can recall. And I actually really enjoyed the mini conversion arc with the gay superhero Ezekiel.
Anyway, here's the official thread if anyone wants to discuss the show further. This thread is intended to be more of a list, rather than a discussion of every show listed.

Greg Hovanessian plays a gay character in Netflix's sci-fi series 'Another Life'. There are no ssm scenes with him as his husband is back on Earth. There is however a steamy bisexual scene between two hot guys later in the season.
The show is BAD, though, especially in the first half. Then it kinda becomes an enjoyable ride.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | July 28, 2019 10:32 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 65 | July 28, 2019 10:51 PM |
Episode eight. Super hot kiss.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | July 28, 2019 10:52 PM |
Though I'll just add that them competing over the same girl up until that point like two average straight bros is what largely makes their eventual kiss so hot, so it might not be as sexy when seen in isolation.

Killjoys, the wacky Canadian scifi show, has gay and lesbian/bi characters galore! My faves are sassy Pree the bar owner with a fascinating back story, and (by Season 3) his hunky muscle stud boyfriend played by hunky muscle stud Gavin Fox.
Also, gay hunky stud Luke McFarland plays straight quite well.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | August 6, 2019 7:12 PM |
The gay character on Another Life is super hot, but he doesn't really have a storyline, unfortunately. Besides the MMF threesome mentioned above, it also features a relationship between a man and someone I'm assuming is non-binary (but is bio male).
The show is a disaster, though. The creator of Another Life also created Slasher, which had a couple gay characters as well.

r101 I know it did, but it's the first Ryan Murphy show for Netflix and he was given free rein, so of course the gay factor would be upped to the max. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it as well. Watching his show as a binge will be a new experience for me.

"Four Weddings and a Funeral" on Hulu features secondary gay characters and has introduced an interracial, intergenerational, inter-class gay romance halfway into its first season, which is now airing. It's a fun enough show with some really snappy dialogue (the Pence joke!) and mature writing. HOWEVER, it makes my piss boil that they didn't write the gay couple to be part of the main posse, as was the case in the original. It is egregious and I can't get over it, and I hate that the movie from a quarter of a century ago was more inclusive in this regard.
r109 Why are you freaking out? No one talked about lesbian characters before you brought them up, yet again. I was merely saying we lost a huge portion of the previous thread because someone for some bizarre reason continues bitching about the lesbians completely unprompted.
I don't care if you hate lesbian characters and lesbians in general. Just shut the fuck up about it already, because we all fully understand the two criteria for inclusion in this thread – male and gay. Add other shows with gay male characters if you know any, like I and others have been doing. Or would you like to inform us that straight Swedish characters don't qualify either?

by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 1, 2019 11:26 AM |
R118 OK, here you go... SPOILER:
He was going to meet up with that guy, but then he freaked out and left. He (Valentin) has a crush on someone else though, a dog washer named Pedro. They even made out. Pedro is openly gay while Valentin is closeted in a relationship with a woman. This is a show on Amazon Prime. It's not a novela, which is why they are allowed to be more explicit. Most telenovelas won't even air same sex kissing.

On Welsh soap "Pobol y Cwm," they've recently introduced a 17-year old gay kid named "Aled" who has a mad crush on his teacher, "Tyler" (one of the regular gay characters in the village).
"Aled," is supposedly having a great deal of difficulty at home, having just come out to his parents. He's now told teacher Tyler that his father has beat him and told him to get out of the house. He keeps turning to Tyler for guidance and support. Tyler's breaking all kinds of rules by getting involved with him, but he sees his young self in Aled at his age and continues to be sympathetic. Meanwhile, Tyler's husband, Iolo, is getting upset because the kid keeps showing up at their house, and he feels Tyler is risking his career. The couple has had more than one argument over this. We don't really know what Aled's situation actually is, because even if he's telling the truth about his horrible homelife, it's clear that he has designs on his "favorite teacher." He's not only tried to kiss Tyler, but he recently told another boy at school that he "always gets his man."

The new season of The Great British Bake Off (S10) started recently and there's gay contestant David, a 30-ish guy - they showed him with his boyfriend during his intro.
There's also three 20-ish twinky guys this year who I think may also be gay, if I trust my gaydar - no background/private life shown for them as yet, to say for sure.

R161 and R162 That sucks. This is the problem with gay characters, they always add them to shows that suck and get cancelled quickly. Lesbians are on long lasting and critically acclaimed shows, so they never lose as many tv characters as the gays do.

by Anonymous | reply 210 | October 15, 2019 1:48 AM |
Insatiable season 2 was boring. I gave up when I got to the 8th episode. There was hardly any gay stuff this season either. Separating Bob and Bob and having them argue 24/7 was the worst decision they could have made. I really thought they would end up together after last season. I was so disappointed when that wasn't the case.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | October 16, 2019 11:41 AM |
Plus they brought in Vincent Rodriguez III and the best part of him was from the first episode of the season.

by Anonymous | reply 213 | October 16, 2019 8:27 PM |
Insatiable focuses too much on the fat chuck which is a mistake because she's very unlikable, the show should have just been desperate housewives gay edition instead of that whole murder bs.
by Anonymous | reply 214 | October 16, 2019 9:44 PM |
R204/R205 I just started watching TITANS (was a fan of the comics & anime), and I agree that adorable Curran has gay-voice and pings - so cacophonously in fact that before I looked up the IMDB I thought he was another actor entirely (Justin Ellings, another very swishy teen actor on the same tier). Curran is still very young, though, and with the current crop of kids sometimes it's hard to tell whether they're gay-leaning or just femme.
R206 I'd be really excited if one of the Titans characters was revealed as gay or bi in the new series. In the comics iirc, it was implied that Jericho might be gay and that Ravager/Rose Wilson leaned toward lesbianism as did Batgirl/Cassandra Cane, but I don't think it was ever confirmed. Personally I've always felt there was some tension between Dick & Jason (or Nightwing & Red Hood as they eventually become) but I doubt TITANS will go there (sadly).
by Anonymous | reply 215 | October 17, 2019 10:46 PM |

R231 Funny, I didn't think it was gay enough. Sure, you got the random gay scene here and there, but there wasn't a full on gay storyline like with the Bobs last year. Don't even get me started on the bald Bob hooking up with Patty's mom🤮 The season overall was a mess. It was just WAY too over the top. Patty killed too many people, it got ridiculous. Also, my favorite storyline from season 1 with the two Bobs was scrapped. I have no idea why, it was cute and the best thing about the show last year. I will not be surprised if the show gets cancelled. This season was just a hot mess.

I'm watching Strange Angel and one of the characters is gay and in love with the main character, but so far they really drop the ball on his sexuality... or any m/m sex, considering a sex cult is involved. I have just watched the first few episodes of The Club on Netflix. The gay guy disappears after a few episodes and I have no idea if he comes back. It's a LONG series with 25 episodes, so I still have quite a few episodes to go. His part doesn't seem to be big though. But he is sorta central to the series as he's the main guy's brother.

I'm on episode 16 of El Club and it's actually really good, not just the gay storyline. I like the gay storyline so far though I wish it got a bit more screentime.

The Club is pretty fun. Just at episode 13 and the gay storyline is in full swing (like, literally, the son punches his homophobic dad). The show has THE best brother dynamic. The lead might be a hot asshole, but his unconditional love for his little gay brother redeems him.

I'm gonna check out Lodge 49 now. I watched the trailer and was turned off by the apparent straight vibe of yet another show about male bonding. I hate stereotypical effeminate gay characters so a lot of the options mentioned here I didn't care about.
Then I read this about Lodge 49 on reddit:
[quote] . Lodge 49 has my favorite portrayal of LGBTQ people in any show It's all done subtly and the sexual orientation of the characters isn't the most interesting thing about them. It's not the first thing you find out about the characters, of which there are a few. They don't dress differently, they don't talk differently, they don't have different body language, they don't make constant references to their sexuality or are overly sexual in their speech. The fact that they are LGBTQ is rarely directly addressed, and I love that. It feels closer to real life and more inclusive than focusing on accentuating the differences. I salute the writers of the show for their excellent writing in regards to LGBTQ people
I'm sold.

r281 I mentioned Lodge 49 at r33. You might be a bit disappointed if you start watching it for the gay stuff only, but it's a great show regardless, so you won't regret it. Watching it when it's not summer is a special experience, I'm sure.

R283, do you think our lives (as in, mine) shouldn't be reflected in the media at all? Only the flamboyant gay shoudl ever bee seen?
Really? That's your argument?
by Anonymous | reply 284 | November 26, 2019 2:33 AM |
r284 But you write like you're starved for that sort of representation, when this thread is full of examples of what you're looking for. I guess I dislike the resentful tone of that poster - it's one thing to say you want more representation of gays like yourself (I also crave more gay nerd representation, for instance), but quite another thing to diss our more fabulous brothers in the process.
The solution isn't to increase your representation at the expense of other types of gays, but to increase ALL of our representation at the breeders' expense. We shouldn't be fighting each other for scraps, like dogs. Wouldn't you agree with that?
by Anonymous | reply 285 | November 26, 2019 2:41 AM |
I’m a huge fan of mainstreaming. That’s the way many of us are and live
by Anonymous | reply 286 | November 26, 2019 2:50 AM |
I am starved for it. It's far FAR more rare than the "comic relief", "sexless best friend", and "queenly fabulous drama queen" gay characters... or ones that just obsess with bringing up their sex lives and sexuality in every social situation. That's literally like 95% of all gay representation on American TV.

That emoji represents disappointment. I didn't mean it as a slur, though I do see it as a bad thing, personally. But your extreme reaction to it tells me there's some deep baggage there. And I'm now diagnosing you, you're calling me dishonest... it's all become too messy at this point. Perhaps we should agree to disagree and just call it a day.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | November 26, 2019 4:08 AM |
My fucking God I meant what I said, that I hate stereotypical effeminate characters because I don't see myself and my friends in them and they're lazy clowning tropes. Am I allowed to look for representation of myself and my other gay bi friends, or is representation only reserved for your special sunflowers?
Fuck off with your authoritative bullshit.
I must remember you that masculinity is not a "heteronormative" trait, stop this nonsensical homophobic garbage. Masculinity is a trait of most men, gay, bi or straight. Effeminate men are a minority, there's nothing wrong with it, but get a clue.
I've never said that it shouldn't exist I mainly expressed my personal preference and what I was looking for.

by Anonymous | reply 333 | December 3, 2019 10:00 AM |
R329 No.
[Quote]Considering the fact that Cooper has been in only 2 of the episodes so far this season and we already got the “precious cargo” line and Greg’s comment about Cooper being around for a long time during the family photo and them both ending up single now. Plus the mutual “I love you’s” which Oliver had no issue saying to Cooper but was freaking out about saying to his actual girlfriend there is a lot happening at a pretty quick pace. We also got that “coming out to your family” pamphlet moment with Oliver and Anna-Kat a few episodes back and it feels like that was preparing us for what’s to come. I don’t know if this will actually lead to anything or not but there are so many signs that it could.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | December 3, 2019 2:38 PM |
R328 Netflix is dyke central. They have a ton of tv shows with lesbian characters, but very few with gay characters. The characters you want to see don't exist. Most of the Netflix shows with gay characters are closeted teens, and all of them feature a coming out storyline. With that said, some coming out storylines are actually good and worth the watch. The foreign shows are actually the best ones to watch, like Elite or The Club. Other shows that have gay characters and are worth the watch: Sex Education, The Society, Special, 13 Reasons Why, House of Flowers, The Umbrella Academy, Insatiable, Sense8, Dear White People, Kimmy Schmidt, Bonding, Grace and Frankie.

I discovered a British show from 2017 called Love, Lies & Records which is about a registry office. It stars Ashley Jensen (Extras, Ugly Betty) and Rebecca Ford. The show features two gay weddings and a lesbian one. Two regular guest characters are revealed to be gay in the final episode. It also features Mark Stanley (Game of Thrones, Sanditon) playing a character in the process of transitioning to be a woman.

R389 You can watch that particular scene at AZNude. It's a German mini-series with the native title being "8 Tage." I really hope in 911 lonestar the gay couple are actually homosexuals, this is the show that I'm most looking forward to watching and would be tragic if one or both of the characters go "fluid" and start relationship with women.

I just finished season 2 of This Close. It was soooo good. I hope there's a third season. The show is one of the best gay shows right now imo. Also, the new guy who's Michael's new love interest is kinda interesting. I don't want to spoil anything, but wow. I really want him to be a part of season 3.

R149 / R150 / R151 In last week's "Single Parents", Miggy (played by the actor who came out as queer/fluid) came out as bisexual. They covered it rather well, with one character saying, "Miggy, did I even know you dated guys?" and the other responds, "You've met his boyfriends before. Remember chubby Mario Lopez?"
Glad they did it. It's a popular show, it helps bring some honesty to the guy playing the character, AND it brings up the concept of "throuples" to suburban moms.

He's now moved out of his dad's house and is on his own, so I think this may signal that they've got something planned.

[quote] Jake Borelli (Grey’s Anatomy) stars in writer-director Peter Paige’s Valentine’s Day rom-com about former high school enemies, openly gay Sam (Borelli) and jock Harry (Niko Terho), who reconnect when Harry comes out. That, of course, is when the real drama begins. Co-starring GLOW’s Britt Baron and Queer Eye’s Karamo, this is the perfect date-night special.

by Anonymous | reply 447 | February 17, 2020 3:45 PM |
The Thing About Harry was cringeworthy. The main character is a whiny little bitch that "Harry" would never have gone for in real life. Then when they finally get together after years of missed connections, he has another melt down that results in one of those stupid situations that only happen in bad romcoms, one of the characters commandeers the microphone at a public event to profess their love for the other and instead of being forced away by security, everybody stands around and goes "Awww!"
by Anonymous | reply 448 | February 17, 2020 6:48 PM |

I was reading the comments on two videos of Rafael Silva and the cast of 911 Lone Star. At some point they ask where Rafael is in a video when Ronen and the others say he was at home with his husband. Refreshing that at least one of the actors is gay and married to a guy. Ronen is apparently dating a woman but I think he's bi.

I looked back to see if the character Mo played by Alex Newell on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist was mentioned yet, and as I presumed he wasn’t. He’s playing gender queer according to Wikipedia, so does he fit in the box or not? I’m really only hate watching the show, but I don’t think they have mentioned any romantic relationships in his life as of yet. Is gender neutral also going to be sexually neutered? It’s Set in the Bay Area, so gay people abound, will this be the only representation and do they even have gay person writing for the show and character? Anyone have some insight?

Has someone broken your fingers in a way that prevents you from posting a new thread on that topic yourself if your interests are too specific to endure learning about foreign language productions?
by Anonymous | reply 482 | March 10, 2020 1:40 AM |
Ok so this is DL catnip and I was gonna start a thread on this, but I think it fits better here. HBO Brazil is about to premiere its first Brazilian LGBTQ+ show on March 22nd, as it happens with all of their shows, it will be available worldwide as well so brace yourselves, this is as bad as it gets. The show is called Todxs Nós (literally All of Us, though the x is the inclusive parlance of todos/todas). I shit you not... theres more.
The main character is a "non binary" chick (a woman basically) who moves to her gay cousin's apartment in Sao Paulo after her dad kicks her out. Now the icing on the cake; she literally speaks using inclusive language, changing the gender of words replacing them with a neutral E at the end. As you know, Portuguese like all romantic languages is gender specific, so you can have an idea of the mess the dialogues sound in this trailer alone. This is the nightmare of what a world with non binary language looks like. It's so bad it looks like a terrible SNL skit.
I'm sure they'll have an english subtitled version soon, how they're gonna convey the change of gender in every word is beyond me. I can't wait.

R506 I've said it before and I'll say it again, the issue with gay male characters isn't just that there are few, it's that the ones who are depicted on tv are so poorly depicted. They're either barely there or neutered, or both. Then there's the fact that they only add gay characters to shows they know will fail and get cancelled, I guess there's less risk involved that way. One year we lost like 6 gay characters because a lot of the shows were cancelled. It fucking sucks. This never happens to lesbian characters, the lesbians get added to critically acclaimed shows that last for a very long time. Few of them get cancelled. The lesbians also get plenty of screen time and are not neutered like their male counterparts.

R505 BBC also had the great zombie drama "In the Flesh" where the protagonist "Kieren Walker" played by Luke Newberry was gay. His romantic interest was "Simon Monroe" played by the dynamic Emmett Scanlan, Jr.
Unfortunately, the show got canceled when the BBC3 broadcast television channel was shuttered in 2014 due to budget cuts. Still pissed that they couldn't cough up enough cash for two or three more episodes to give it some kind of closure.

[quote] He just goes his own way. Refreshing really,
Very true and I love him and the show. He had a story about struggling with being out to his church choir which was quite moving.
John Clarence Stewart shows some serious dance moves on the show and Skylar Astin is a great singer and performer. But the best is watching Mary Steenburgen perform songs. I get a strange kick out of that for some reason.
The link leads to an almost 20 minutes interview with Alex about the show.

The Baker and the Beauty on ABC has a gay guy as the third or fourth lead, played by DL favorite Dan Bucatinsky. (And some lesbian characters too, for what it's worth.)
The original Israeli version, 20 episodes, it is on Amazon prime, I wonder if there are gay characters on that show as well.

I've heard a little about that show r501. Speaking of gay asian shows. I don't remember the exact name of the show but there was a gay Japanese tv show that came out I believe last year. The plot revolved a writer going through writer's block, a former classmate now helping him and a supposedly perverted old man who used to write gay erotica books.

Ash/Sully is a good storyline on this Australian show called The Heights, you can watch it here if you have a VPN. The actor that plays Ash is really hot.

A Place to Call Home, an Australian series of 67 episodes, currently running Friday nights on PBS, at least in New York, has an active gay storyline: James the son of the patriarch, is married to a woman and struggling with his sexuality; Harry, a local farmhand, is a former lover of James and his current temptation. Other gay characters will appear as the storyline progresses.
It's all beautifully handled, and, no spoiler, it wraps up with a pretty happy ending for almost everyone.
Although nine episodes have already aired, this is a good time to pick it up; some dramatic developments lay shortly ahead.

Netflix's latest Spanish teen drama Control Z features at least one gay character. More details would probably be considered spoilers. It's a great show which also features a trans character.
The show is basically an edgier version of Pretty Little Liars where students are being terrorized, and blackmailed, by a mysterious hacker.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | May 23, 2020 9:15 AM |
While Control Z is a pretty decent show the gay content is rather brief and quite dark and grim (no happy end there, but then none of the stories have a happy ending in the finale).

Telemundo's novela "100 días para enamorarnos" (100 Days to Fall in Love), billed as a romantic comedy/drama has the pairing of Pablo and Fer (Fernando).
This series started April 28, so they're only 19 episodes into it.
Pablo is out. Fernando's "never done anything like this before."
This started last month. Someone's being clipping their story on youtube, but I haven't seen English subtitles. (Link to a recent episode below where they kiss, presumably have sex, and a morning after scene.
if you want English subtitles, you can watch full episodes at Telemundo's website and select English in the Closed-Caption (CC) option.
They're pretty cute and the actors have good chemistry (imo).

Here’s a nice YouTube video highlighting 12 new gay couples in 2020 TV, which just was posted at the end of May. Despite highlighting the very white boys of Hollyoaks, there are many if not a majority of POC or international guys in theses show, which is a nice step forward.

Not a show, but a fan movie based on the game Detroit Become Human called Detroit Evolution.
[quote]It's been one year since Markus freed the androids of Detroit. The most advanced android ever created, Nines (Maximilian Koger), has evolved past his initial programming as a ruthless hunter, and now protects the city as a DPD detective. But as new crimes and dangers start to threaten RK900 himself, he must also juggle his growing fondness for his partner, Detective Gavin Reed (Chris Trindade), and navigate everything that they mean to one another.

The final season of 13 Reasons Why has a record breaking 9 gay characters (two bisexuals) with 3 major storylines about male-male relationships. The Prom in the show features it as its center story. As soapy as it is, it was nice to see a show like that feature so many different gay/bi characters in all levels of acceptance and romance.

Kingdom, on Netflix
This isn’t a new show, it originally ran from 2014 to 2017, but it is new on Netflix and stars DL favorite Nick Jonas as a closeted MMA fighter.
Only 40 episodes so it’s not an impossible binge. I’ll be watching!

"The Alienist" just stated its second season. In the second episode, Dakota Fanning and Luke Evans visit a ritzy department store and one of the workers knows Dakota and stops her to say hello. He's very fey and he gets very flirty when he claps eyes on Luke. This guy may just be a one-off, too early to tell.

Not necessarily new as I think this came out either last year or the year before that. The show was a called Mermaid Sauna. It was about 3 people. One of them an older gay guy who finally quits his dead end job and opens up a gay sauna. The other two people were a straight young man and woman who eventually go to work at the older gay guy's gay sauna.
