The Comic-Con trailer that dropped today got pulled from DC's YouTube page after an hour or so for some reason. But you can still see it here. Doesn't really inspire one with confidence in their streaming service, does it?

They are trying here. The Starfire and Beast Boy looks are...disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 2July 19, 2018 2:13 PM

Man, this thing is trying so hard to be edgy. It feels like Hot Topic the series.

"SOMETIMES WHEN I FEEL THE DARKNESS, IT FEELS...GOOD"

"FUCK BATMAN" (oh no he didn't)!"

Though in a way that makes me want to check it out, seems like it might be one of those so bad it is good.

by Anonymousreply 3July 19, 2018 2:37 PM

The people running DC don't really seem to know what they're doing.

by Anonymousreply 4July 19, 2018 2:43 PM

They really, really don't. It is amazing how incompetent they are compared to the people who run Marvel.

by Anonymousreply 5July 19, 2018 2:44 PM

They just know they want to have a streaming platform, that's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 6July 19, 2018 2:45 PM
That #Titans trailer is like watching a really bad superhero movie porn parody with unusually good costumes.

Ouch! Twitter is not amused.

by Anonymousreply 7July 19, 2018 2:57 PM

I don’t understand these one-channel pay subscription services. We’re already paying too much for major streaming services like Netflix. Do they really think people are also going to pay for CBS, DC, etc. on the strength of a series or two?

by Anonymousreply 8July 19, 2018 3:13 PM

I assume they think the DC fanbase will r8, I'd imagine it doesn't take a ton of subscribers for these services to be profitable.

It seems we are moving towards more segmented content, with people subscribing to the stuff they are interested in.

by Anonymousreply 9July 19, 2018 3:16 PM

That did seem like a semi-well done fan made trailer.

I have not read the Titans/Teen Titans for years, but weren't they supposed to be a little more fun? Why does every comic book series have to be all angst and doom and gloom. It is not the best made show, but at Legends of Tomorrow knows it is not great art and has some fun.

by Anonymousreply 10July 19, 2018 3:16 PM

Yes the Titans is traditionally a more light-hearted and fun property, they are using a very different approach r10. I guess they think "look, it is going to be super-edgy and TV-MA" will make people more likely to subscribe. In theory I get it, it makes it more unique than the programming you can find on CW.

But just being R-rated doesn't make it good, there is a right way and wrong way to do these things.

by Anonymousreply 11July 19, 2018 3:22 PM

Raven’s origin story was super dark. Starfire’s backstory is dark as well. But the whole thing wasn’t dark.

by Anonymousreply 12July 19, 2018 3:24 PM
In theory I get it, it makes it more unique than the programming you can find on CW.

I would prefer they distinguish it from CW content by making it good.

by Anonymousreply 13July 19, 2018 3:25 PM

What's another word for terrible? Teen Titans Go! The movie looks 10 times better. Also, tf is going on with Starfire?

by Anonymousreply 14July 19, 2018 3:31 PM

There was plenty of darkness in the classic Titans. Raven's origin, Starfire's origin and family feud, Robin/Nightwing's vendettas and obsessiveness, the whole Terra storyline...

However, this looks awful - like it was made for $20. Painful.

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2018 3:33 PM

They've butchered Raven, my favorite character.

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2018 3:39 PM

meh. looks like low budget fan service

by Anonymousreply 17July 19, 2018 3:46 PM

Sure there was some darkness, but I they never went around butchering people. They aren't Wolverine or the Punisher.

by Anonymousreply 18July 19, 2018 3:47 PM

it looks dumb. Nightwing has to be naked in this every episode for it to work.

by Anonymousreply 19July 19, 2018 4:03 PM

Fun fact: most of the budget was blown on getting Thwaites those abs.

by Anonymousreply 20July 19, 2018 4:08 PM

OMG! Too dark! Too violent. As said above, Starfire looks especially bad.

by Anonymousreply 21July 19, 2018 4:24 PM

Geoff Johns fucks up again.

by Anonymousreply 22July 19, 2018 5:13 PM

I can’t wait. The Teen Titans were always my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 23July 19, 2018 5:17 PM

Raven looks like a fat non binary girl who, of course, has purple hair

by Anonymousreply 24July 19, 2018 5:29 PM

Most Raven scenes in the trailer remind me of Anna Paquin's Rogue character in X-Men. The same fragile, frightened, desperate combo with Nightwing as angry Wolverine (fuck Batman! .... woah, lovers quarrel?).

by Anonymousreply 25July 19, 2018 6:11 PM

If they would've made a live action teen titans movie, it would've been the biggest hit so far for dc. Not only did you have adult fans, but kids these days are obsessed with the animated show. A "marvel style " titans would've killed at the box office.

by Anonymousreply 26July 19, 2018 6:17 PM

NEW TEEN TITANS, where Raven, Cyborg, and Raven premiered in 1980, was not light-hearted. Lots of heaviness in that series, especially because Raven is the daughter of an other-dimensional demon. NEW TEEN TITANS is the series that brought DC into the 80s and made it a sales rival for Marvel. NEW TEEN TITANS beat X-Men in sales for a time, which was phenomenal because that was the same time X-Men was exploding after Phoenix's death.

Dick Grayson basically DID say, "Fuck Batman!" when he quit being Robin in 1983 and became Nightwing in 1984 (without the profanity).

You don't know what you're talking about.

You guys just keep your DC complaints in a folder, ready to cut and paste them about all DC product.

by Anonymousreply 27July 19, 2018 6:20 PM

Don't attack us r27, if you are a real fan you should want better content. You know this show looks like crap.

by Anonymousreply 28July 19, 2018 6:30 PM

That Infinity War movie was crap, I do know that.

by Anonymousreply 29July 19, 2018 6:34 PM

I wish DC could reach that level of crap r29, which isn't a joke. It is depressing how weak their movies are. The characters deserve better.

by Anonymousreply 30July 19, 2018 6:36 PM

To me it's way too dark (visually and action / plot-wise). In these dark, real life Trump drama times why would people watch more depressing, fictional drama? Are they not depressed enough? Do people really want to escape sad and dark reality by entering a dark, or darker, fantasy world?

by Anonymousreply 31July 19, 2018 6:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 32July 19, 2018 7:00 PM

Dove, a pacifist, should not be going around slicing people's legs open.

It's a shame, too, because they've already announced a Doom Patrol series is going to spin off from this. Maybe they should have waited to see how it played?

Maybe Beast Boy will be gay?

by Anonymousreply 33July 19, 2018 11:20 PM

Will this have nudity? I'd watch it if Nightwing gets nude in every episode.

by Anonymousreply 34July 20, 2018 7:20 AM
They've butchered Raven, my favorite character.

I wish they'd gone more old school Titans with her, instead of...what they did. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 35July 20, 2018 7:47 AM

They still try to make Brenton Thwaites happen? That must be one kinky SOP having wrapped Hollywoods' creeps around his finger to give him so many chances. Or does he get paid in McDonald's Happy Meal coupons? He should switch to a different management if that's the case.

by Anonymousreply 36July 20, 2018 10:57 AM

Sorry, SOB, of course.

by Anonymousreply 37July 20, 2018 10:58 AM

I can't wait how they turned the upbeat Teen Titan's theme song into some emo goth anthem.

by Anonymousreply 38July 20, 2018 11:30 AM

Just checked out the first episode and it's pretty good. It's very graphic when it comes to violence and more horror than action at times (Raven dealing with the guy who tries to kill her to prevent evil to enter this world through her).

by Anonymousreply 39October 13, 2018 11:04 AM

I'll give it another episode or two to decide if I want to stick to it. I want to know just what it is Batman is doing to make Dick so disappointed in him considering Dick was practically going to murder the men in the alley.

by Anonymousreply 40October 15, 2018 3:44 AM

Man whoever made that trailer for them should be fired.

That trailer looked awful and was (rightly) mocked online. But the show actually didn't suck! I watched the first episode with low expectations and I was surprised that I enjoyed it and and I want to check out the next one.

by Anonymousreply 41October 20, 2018 2:43 AM

"Starring Brenton Thwaites and a bunch of new talent."

That was funny...

by Anonymousreply 42October 20, 2018 2:45 AM

I'll be watching for Brenton's ta-tas.

Berlanit is a hack, however. His 14-year-old Girl Content isn't likely to impress me.

by Anonymousreply 43October 20, 2018 2:47 AM

So is this going to be available on any other streaming service?

by Anonymousreply 44October 20, 2018 2:48 AM

Is there male nudity?

by Anonymousreply 46October 20, 2018 2:54 AM

Seriously? Starfire looks like a ghetto stripper!

Nightwing would have to flash his coinslot in every episode to make me pay for this.

When did Brenton go from twink to twunk? He was so hot in that awful Gods of Egypt and that Blue Lagoon reboot on Lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 47October 20, 2018 2:54 AM

So Brenton's still pretending to be straight? At least he looks good still.

by Anonymousreply 48October 20, 2018 2:57 AM

Brenton Thwaites has his "beefcake" scene in the pilot where he shows off shirtless for the camera r46. He got some nice muscle definition for the role.

by Anonymousreply 49October 20, 2018 2:58 AM

Why is Greg Berlanti married when he has access to all that Hot DC/CW dick.

Even that Riverdale showrunner/creator (the one that wrote that awful Carrie reboot in 2013) had to have a taste of KJ Apa or that Asian Reggie. I'd pass on the Suite Life guy though. Disney kids, you don't were that dick/hole has been!

by Anonymousreply 50October 20, 2018 3:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 51October 20, 2018 3:15 AM

Was Starfire black in the cartoon and comics?

I don't know why Starfire looks like a hooker out of the 80s film Doctor Detroit. I'm not loving this gritty Dick Grayson. If they wanted a hardass Robin they should have just let it be Jason Todd.

The second episode is much better.

by Anonymousreply 54October 20, 2018 3:48 AM

Yeah, Starfire is an orange skinned alien r52.

That is why I don't get why some fanboys cared about the race thing, no matter what race you cast it isn't going to be "accurate"

I love Berlanti and his shows, but c'mon. Weinstein is married to the gorgeous Georgina Chapman (project runway) and he still was a creep to these starlets and actresses. Being married in Hollywood, or being married in general, doesn't mean that you are actually faithful to your spouse and an honorable person who doesn't sexually assault anyone.

When it comes to Berlanti I just hope everything is consentual.

by Anonymousreply 75October 20, 2018 8:47 AM
Yes the Titans is traditionally a more light-hearted and fun property, they are using a very different approach [R10]

No. No. No. That’s the fucking dumb cartoon. The comic has never been traditionally light-hearted or fun. Raven's mother was raped by Satan, Starfire was a slave, Donna Troy is....something nobody can explain because they've fucked up her history so many times. Drug and alcoholism have also been storylines. That cartoon is my "Slowly I turn" moment.

DC still counts on dark & gritty doing the trick. They can't blame that one on Zack Snyder. And Greg Berlanti probably likes the departure from the CW restrictions.

And as a non-graphic novel (DC or Marvel) I think on this particular show I like it. The only connection I have with the Titan franchise is the first animated cartoon series (the dark one where they dealt with Raven and her demonic father). So to me the show seems to be truthful to the source material.

by Anonymousreply 125October 20, 2018 8:08 PM

R124 If they like change, they should a female Hawk and a male Dove to make it more interesting.

by Anonymousreply 126October 20, 2018 8:09 PM

R125 That's what I always thought! LOL In the ancient gays before internet porn, comic books was one way for gaylings to fantasize about hunky guys going at it.

by Anonymousreply 127October 20, 2018 8:11 PM

The best gay character to bring in would be Midnighter, he could use more exposure. Plus they could recreate the famous scene between him and Grayson.
[R124] If they like change, they should a female Hawk and a male Dove to make it more interesting.

They introduced a female Hawk when Dawn, the female Dove, was introduced. I think she's dead, though. The original Hawk got resurrected like ten years ago.

by Anonymousreply 130October 20, 2018 9:15 PM

How does Brenton feel being the only person of color at R99? Does he feel like a token?

by Anonymousreply 131October 20, 2018 9:26 PM

The female Dove died in 1991 and was resurrected in 2002.

Hawk died in 2000 as the villain Extant in the pages of JSA. He was brought back to life in 2010 in the finale of 'Blackest Night.'

Both are currently still alive in the comics.

The male Dove has been dead since December 1985 and is still dead, no matter what continuity.

by Anonymousreply 132October 20, 2018 9:48 PM

The female Hawk first appeared in Early 2005 in the pages of 'Teen Titans' as the never-before-seen fraternal twin of the female Dove.

She died in 2009 in the first issue of the 'Blackest Night: Titans' mini-series and is still dead.

I'm an old school Wolfman/Perez Titans fan, and I don't mind this new incarnation...at least it isn't anything like that fucking kids show they created....which, unfortunately, is the only one the Millennials remember

by Anonymousreply 134October 21, 2018 11:01 AM
Yeah. Unfortunately, DC fucked up her character long before the shitty cartoon. Early 90s DC is garbage.

True. TBH, I don't think they ever knew what to with her after Trigon was defeated and she could be 'normal' - and that was the late '80s.

by Anonymousreply 135October 21, 2018 11:36 AM

One of the things I loved most about the Wolfman-Perez series was the evolution of Raven’s face. I hope the actress they cast as Raven is prepared to lose massive amounts of weight (kidding)!

I don’t remember that at all.

by Anonymousreply 137October 21, 2018 2:41 PM

Yes, the changes in Raven's face were such a cool detail - so chilling. Yes, R137, she was getting more gaunt, 'evil' looking on her way to her Trigon transformation (with the double set of eyes). I don't think the changes were deliberate at first - it was just a product of Perez's evolving style - but eventually it became a plot point.

by Anonymousreply 151October 21, 2018 7:18 PM

Right now, there just isn't enough content on that site to make it worth my while. The stuff I really like, e.g., most of the animated series and movies, I already have.

If that should change in the next year or two, I'll consider forking out the cash. Until then, I'll pass, as I'd be paying that monthly fee for a single series, Titans, and that's not worth it.

by Anonymousreply 152October 21, 2018 7:27 PM

They're casting up their other live action series like Swamp Thing with Jennifer Beals and Crystal Reed (Teen Wolf) and Doom Patrol with Alan Tudyk (Firefly) and the voicework of Matt Bomer and Brendan Fraser.

by Anonymousreply 153October 21, 2018 7:31 PM

I'm surprised they don't have all of their series available. I know there are some complications with rights issues with Batman '66 (given that Disney will end up owning part of them once the merger is finished), but I thought it was odd Smallville isn't available.

by Anonymousreply 154October 21, 2018 8:00 PM

Maybe they’re staying away from it because of the Alison Mack sex cult scandal? She was a pretty big part of that show.

by Anonymousreply 157October 21, 2018 9:45 PM

At the moment, the DCAU series (Batman: TAS-Justice League Unlimited), Lois & Clark, the George Reeves Superman, Wonder Woman (with Lynda in HD for the first time), the Nolan movies, the Christopher Reeve films, and some of their animated movies.

There's also a selection of actual comics.

Titans will be joined shortly be Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, and Stargirl in live action, and Young Justice and Harley Quinn in animation.

by Anonymousreply 158October 21, 2018 10:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 170October 22, 2018 8:02 PM

They're already getting creative with the storylines, so I doubt that anything is really off limits.

I finally got around to watching the first two episodes last night. Yes, they're dark but, more important, they're kind of boring. I don't really want to know more about these people. I doubt I'll go any further with this unless someone tells me that the later episodes really do get better.

Whuh...they don’t need both of Slade’s sons (also, it would be son as Joey was the only one involved with this story). Hell, they don’t even use Wonder Girl whenever they retell it. They damn sho don’t need Jericho. DC comics distanced The Terminator from the TT like 30 years ago and changed his name to Deathstroke and upgraded him to a JLA/ Batman villain. They really fucked up the Titans mythology once Perez left.
Guess we won't get a close-up of Brenton's Robin like they did with Chris O'Donnell's?

Nah. That movie is considered a joke of epic proportions. They like to pretend that it doesn’t exist. I kinda enjoyed it.

by Anonymousreply 173October 23, 2018 11:31 AM

DC didn't copyright the name "Terminator" in time before the Terminator movies, so "Deathstroke" became the title of his comic and his main name.

It had nothing at all to do with "one Pérez left."

by Anonymousreply 174October 23, 2018 11:34 AM

I’m not expecting they would faithfully depict Terra’s superpowers on screen...they would probably give her the ability to create earthquakes or something like that.

by Anonymousreply 175October 23, 2018 11:36 AM
DC didn't copyright the name "Terminator" in time before the Terminator movies, so "Deathstroke" became the title of his comic and his main name.

So...in essence, they distanced his character from the Titans, changed his name to Deathstroke and upgraded his status as a villain. And upon Perez leaving, they ruined the Titans’ mythology.

Coincidentally, THAT’S exactly what happened AND what I posted….shithead.

by Anonymousreply 176October 23, 2018 12:21 PM

Deathstroke never worked for me as a solo Titans villain when I was young. There was no way Wonder Girl, Kid Flash or Raven wouldn't have disposed of him in seconds. We were supposed to think: hey, Deathstroke is really cool! But it just came across as: why are the Titans being so lame? He is much better suited to face off with Batman or Green Arrow.

by Anonymousreply 177October 23, 2018 3:13 PM

Wonder if they’ll ever bring in Lilith or Jericho.

Seeing them try Lilith’s winged boyfriend would be interesting.

by Anonymousreply 178October 23, 2018 3:24 PM

Josh Dylan from Mamma Mia 2 would make a good Jericho.

by Anonymousreply 179October 23, 2018 4:31 PM

It's not just about raw power, it is also about skill and experience in battle r177. Which Deathstroke has in spades, and these characters largely don't.

by Anonymousreply 180October 23, 2018 4:43 PM

But by the point Deathstroke appeared, R180, in old continuity, the Titans had been active for years and, for example, reflexes fast enough to deal with Kid Flash? No way. Either he catches them off-guard and slits their throats, or it's curtains if they have a second or two to come back at him.

by Anonymousreply 181October 23, 2018 5:31 PM

R181 That why Deathstroke had someone infiltrate the team and help him capture the Titans separately when they were off guard. That's the whole plot of the Judas Contract story line.
It's not just about raw power, it is also about skill and experience in battle [R177]. Which Deathstroke has in spades, and these characters largely don't.

Well, the Titans aren’t slouches. Donna Troy was trained by the Amazons, Starfire is a warrior on her planet. Kid Flash WAS a Flash (RIP). The poster is right. The Titans way overpowered the Terminator.

A question....does Starfire fly in this series? Also, do they go into why she's dressed like a hooker from the 70s?

by Anonymousreply 185October 24, 2018 1:03 PM

A lot of actors deliberately change their looks (like grow a beard or dye their hair) inbetween seasons or projects to separate themselves from their fictional characters or just enjoy having full control over their physical appearance which they don't have while filming.

by Anonymousreply 186October 24, 2018 9:59 PM

The Starfire "hooker" clothes were left over from a club night out in Berlin (she awakes with amnesia the following morning)...so yeah...German club clothes....bleh!

by Anonymousreply 187October 24, 2018 11:27 PM

The last ep was the strongest one so far. I'm loving that Starfire comes with a kickass soundtrack, for all the hate she was getting the actress is doing a good job.

by Anonymousreply 188October 28, 2018 8:47 PM

I'm with you R139. Changeling being hairy was such a turn on for me when I was a teen.

by Anonymousreply 189October 28, 2018 9:31 PM

I watched the first three episodes and it's surprisingly okay, especially for something written by Akiva Goldsman. It's generic and I'm a little too aware of the budget limitations....and it's darker than I like my Titans (Yes the classic Wolfman/Perez era had mature storylines, but there is an excluded middle between Teen Titans Go! and 90s grimdark)....but it's reasonably entertaining so far.

There's some nice attention to detail, like Gar's hoodie referencing his classic costume. Kory's personal disco soundtrack seems like a nod to the late 70s/early 80s era of New Teen Titans. Nice touch playing "I Feel Love" as she kills three people. And the weird writing in her storage space...could that be Interlac? Oh, and I like that Robin looks like a gymnast and not a roided up weightlifter.

I'm a sucker for The Doom Patrol, so next episode could be make or break for me. Looks like we're getting more or less the original Patrol, but Rebis instead of Negative Man. And Elastigirl in body horror mode. Not sure I want a Doom Patrol series though. Not from Berlanti & Goldman.

by Anonymousreply 190October 30, 2018 1:31 PM

As she kills three people?? I'm out. Sounds like trash.

by Anonymousreply 191October 30, 2018 2:25 PM

I'm not saying it was okay, R191, but she was defending herself and didn't know how her powers worked. I have a bigger issue with a brutal Robin who may have killed some thugs (the fight scenes are hard to follow) and certainly put out someone's eye. So yeah, don't think you'll like this show.

Found some production stills from the upcoming Doom Patrol episode and it looks fab. I'm intrigued by the mix of periods; contemporary Beast Boy, timeless Chief, Larry(?) & Cliff in their 90s/Morrison era outfits, and retro Rita.

R192 Changeling is so pale. Is that how he is in this version? Does he turn green at all?

by Anonymousreply 196October 30, 2018 9:10 PM

He's not green in human form, possibly for budgetary reasons. I'm sure that's why Cyborg isn't around. Starfire isn't orange either. They couldn't even afford Dick Grayson's ass.

by Anonymousreply 197October 31, 2018 12:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 198October 31, 2018 12:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 201October 31, 2018 4:55 PM

Starfire being fine with killing until the Titans convince her otherwise is how it worked in the comics. She comes from a warrior race.

by Anonymousreply 202October 31, 2018 5:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 212November 25, 2018 11:15 PM

Starfire is totally wrong. She was an alien princess from Tamaran on the run from the slavers her sister sold her to, not a whore with a fur coat and a bad red wig.

by Anonymousreply 213November 25, 2018 11:23 PM

I actually like what the actress is doing with the role, though i do hate that fur coat. Obviously at some point they'll delve into the Tamaran stuff, just went with the amnesia plot line to table that for later.

by Anonymousreply 214November 25, 2018 11:26 PM

I think it would have been better cast her as an indian or middle eastern actress - I never saw Starfire as African American. She had golden skin and green eyes. Raven too. Raven always seems eastern European.

by Anonymousreply 215November 26, 2018 12:25 AM

R215 Comic book Starfire is like a hetero's wet dream of an alien female! The actress they cast... not so much.

by Anonymousreply 216November 26, 2018 2:24 AM

Just saw the latest episode and apparently Dick Grayson is cool with killing dozens of people? That's a pretty non-canonical interpretation of the character.

It also leads into my problem with something being "adult and edgy", it means a lot of violence and profanity, but this show still cuts away from sex and nudity. So typical.

by Anonymousreply 217November 26, 2018 3:30 AM

The narrative is all over the place. I’m going to stick it out however I keep hoping things will become more cohesive once everyone’s origin story is fleshed out. I still have high hopes for Swamp Thing.

by Anonymousreply 218November 26, 2018 3:55 AM

Odd that artist picked Nightwing to make the point, when he is DC's designated/token objectified male. Even in the Perez days female characters would comment on his body, and it's got a lot less subtle over the years.

WHO IS DONNA TROY?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 221November 29, 2018 10:36 PM

Donna Troy is one of the easy examples of the weak points of comic books. The character has had a million different backstories, all of which are pretty stupid, and has never been fully defined as a character.

by Anonymousreply 222December 1, 2018 5:00 PM

The show and characters are so bland. The Doom Patrol characters had way more personality and presence in their one episode. The only titans character with any spark is Starfire.

by Anonymousreply 223December 1, 2018 5:14 PM

r222 - actually John Byrne fixed that in his run on Wonder Woman. Donna Troy was a magical clone of Dianna created as a playmate for Dianna. She was kidnapped by a magical being to torture her mother. Donna was forced to live a tragic life over and over and over. All of the tragedy allowed the magical clone to become a real person due to the strength of her will to live (the assumption was the clone faded away because she was just a magical duplicate why no one on paradise island wondered where she was). Her last encounter wiped her completely - she became a person who did not exist. Wonder Woman with the help of Wally West was able to rebuild her memories from his with the magic lasso. Through living 1000 tortured lives she became a being of pure will. So Donna Troy is a magical clone of Wonder Woman.
Raven's origin, Starfire's origin and family feud, Robin/Nightwing's vendettas and obsessiveness, the whole Terra storyline...

The CN animated series (the serious first one, not the TTG! Chibi one) did a fine job of all these excepting the Starfire Origin story, and I strongly feel there is no need to besmirch that work by doing it over liveaction (probably poorly).

The episodes ‘Fear Itself’ (Rave), ‘Aftershock’ (Terra) and ‘Apprentice Parts I & II’ (Robin) are sublime and probably can’t be done over better. They could perhaps be more faithful to the comic, but not better,

by Anonymousreply 225December 1, 2018 5:31 PM

r224 - read your post again and tell me he “fixed” it. He just made it more complicated! Steven Moffett probably would have liked it, though.

Dick and Raven both rock that "tortured character with the weight of the world on their shoulders" thing. Beast Boy is supposed to be functioning as the comic relief, but yeah he hasn't been that funny.

It's also really awkward they cast an actually teen as Raven but a 20-something as Beast Boy when they knew they wanted them to be a romantic couple. It's hard to remember that the character is supposed to be as young as Raven as.

Got to admit I got a bit choked up about the fate of the bear in the van in the Donna Troy episode.

by Anonymousreply 234December 2, 2018 9:30 AM

Call me a heartless contrarian but I never saw the appeal of the ‘BB/Rae’ couple. The only time it even remotely worked for me was in the early ‘00s comic books (forget which Arc/run it was now), when BB was put in charge of the Titans (for some reason?) somehow angsted his way into Raven’s empathy. Raven, for her part, took BB more seriously in that story and started to see him as someone with depth. The attraction between them still wasn’t appealing (it had overtones of misogyny, which, no).

I also hated BB with Terra, though. I preferred Raven solo, and Robin with Terra.

Awesome nerd burn.

Donna Troy is one of the more extreme examples of how comics time compression, and reboots, can eff up a character.

The biggest casualty of the DC reboot mania is the Legion.

by Anonymousreply 237December 3, 2018 4:57 PM

X-MEN chicanery notwithstanding, I just never understood why DC have to make plots so pointlessly difficult to tell and to follow all the time.

Like with the resurrection stuff for Bucky & Jason Todd. With Bucky they just wrote that “Commies did it” with some help from cryogenics and that was the End of it. It worked great. Over at DC however, Jason Todd was given the most needlessly-complicated backstory ever put to page - one that began with Superman punching a literal hole in Space/Time and ended with a magical pit of biblical goop. Stupid.

They did the same loop-de-loop with poor Terra, even giving her a clone/doppelgänger from another dimension at some point. Shit was awful and left a bad taste that even the Crisis couldn’t wash away.

by Anonymousreply 238December 3, 2018 9:38 PM
ended with a magical pit of biblical goop

I hope the biblical goop included gold, frankincense and myrrh. I only want top-quality ingredients used in anything goop related.

I don't know the Legion very well but I did read some of the Five Years Later stuff. Of course they had the luxury to do that soft reboot. Why DC keeps rebooting the main continuity is a mystery to me. Just makes everything pointless.

Caught up on the Titans episodes and just about ready to give up. I'd rather watch spin-offs of this show than the actual show. I suppose a Donna Troy Program is too much to hope for. Though if it did exist they'd probably have her snapping someone's neck every five minutes.
Why DC keeps rebooting the main continuity is a mystery to me.

I'm guessing it's money. These are mostly "the event of the century!!!!" reboots, usually with the word "CRISIS!" in the title and "SOMEBODY DIES!!!" prominently featured.

by Anonymousreply 241December 4, 2018 2:42 AM

I stopped reading the comics as a kid then returned a few years before the entire DC continuity wipeout that ushered in the New 52. I've read articles to keep up with the numerous changes since then but it's just too complicated and the art is largely awful.

Jason Todd was part of a ridiculous reboot when he returned to life but his return was fantastic. One of the best runs I've ever read was Judd Winick's "Red Hood: The Lost Years". I think it's why I like Titans' Jason Todd. At least he has the spirit of comic's Jason. Dick is a completely new construct.
The biggest casualty of the DC reboot mania is the Legion.

Ain't that the truth. The Legion got fucked royally due to the Crisis on Infinite Earths and it never got its footing back again. I'm still bitter about it all these years later.
Donna Troy is one of the easy examples of the weak points of comic books. The character has had a million different backstories, all of which are pretty stupid, and has never been fully defined as a character.

I actually liked the backstory from 'Who Is Donna Troy?' and thought it worked fine. It was when they started all the Troia shit that it got hopelessly garbled and it's all been downhill since.

I might be alone on my particular island, but the Wally West/Raven unrequited love that wasn't actually unrequited worked for me, and I was always disappointed that it ended up never really going anywhere. That was always more interesting to me than any of her other pairings.

by Anonymousreply 243December 4, 2018 3:51 AM
I actually liked the backstory from 'Who Is Donna Troy?' and thought it worked fine.

I think we all agree with you there. In fact, that was probably the best issue of the series ever. It was post-Crisis that they fucked up her origin story.

by Anonymousreply 244December 4, 2018 4:33 AM
The show and characters are so bland. The Doom Patrol characters had way more personality and presence in their one episode. The only titans character with any spark is Starfire

The Doom Patrol characters had that one episode setup so it made some sense that we'd get everything we needed to know for their spin off in that backdoor pilot.

I guess with the main cast they have the luxury of time. Starfire and Dick, so far, have gotten the royal treatment.
I think it would have been better cast her as an indian or middle eastern actress - I never saw Starfire as African American. She had golden skin and green eyes. Raven too. Raven always seems eastern European.

When people started seeing the live action version of characters few considered budget. They needed human looking equivalents for budget reasons. The race doesn't matter at all. It's not like we ever see their parents or family.

Mystique spent most of her time as a human on screen because Jennifer Lawrence's role was so big and because she hated the makeup. She also had to blend in with humans.

Domino wasn't painted white.

Starfire is an alien who couldn't run around as orange.

Beast Boy doesn't look green all the time.

Gamora is the rare exception but her entire movie franchise takes place in space. She doesn't have to walk around among humans. She doesn't have to blend in.

The only thing I hate about Starfire are her outfits but her 70s/80s glam look is starting to grow on me. I did like the fact that when she uses her powers she turns orange.

by Anonymousreply 245December 4, 2018 7:20 AM

I guess being an outsider when it comes to the source material helps to appreciate the show a bit more. But then I also miss all the easter eggs or shout-outs that refer to the comics.
Why DC keeps rebooting the main continuity is a mystery to me.
I'm guessing it's money.

It just seems so short sighted to me. The endless reboots may attract new readers - get in on the ground floor with no backstory to worry about! - but I wonder how many older fans are turned off. Personally I just can't care about DC comics any more, not when everything could get flushed away at any time.

Back to the show, I wonder if anyone is keeping a kill count. And do Dick and Kory both get credit for torching the asylum?
The biggest casualty of the DC reboot mania is the Legion.
Ain't that the truth. The Legion got fucked royally due to the Crisis on Infinite Earths and it never got its footing back again. I'm still bitter about it all these years later.

Couldn't agree more!! The Legion was my favorite superhero group. And DC managed to destroy everything that was great about it.

Part of the reason I liked Legion was that it was that it was set in the future, so it was only peripheral to the present day continuity. Sure Superboy and Supergirl were members and the Legion on occasion traveled to the 20th Century. But otherwise, they were largely removed from the continuity.

So, I never imagined the Legion would be so severely affected by the Crisis on Infinite Earths shakeup, more specifically the decision to reboot Superman and eliminate him being Superboy. I too am still bitter about my favorite comic book series being so fucked over by that decision.

by Anonymousreply 248December 4, 2018 9:13 AM

I believe reboots serve another purpose as well. Adjusting to the current social and political climate and make past character development what may be considered "problematic" nowdays go away and therefore appeal to a totally new generation of comic book readers.

by Anonymousreply 249December 4, 2018 9:19 AM

When sales drop they reboot, before that they did CRISISes - 1 million earths into 1, then back. I mean they could just write better stories.....

by Anonymousreply 250December 4, 2018 10:19 PM

r250, don't be ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 251December 4, 2018 11:04 PM

Sweetie, if it was that simple, everyone would be doing it.

by Anonymousreply 252December 4, 2018 11:13 PM

DC's been doing reboots, what, every ten years? Is there really anything so problematic in the last twenty years that they have to reset continuity? Not saying you're wrong R249 but...yeah, it's a short sighted strategy. They don't need a Crisis to introduce shiny new characters.

by Anonymousreply 253December 5, 2018 12:03 PM

Every decade or less, some hotshot DC writers always feel like they got that big epic idea that can top the first Crisis... but that never ends well.
Every decade or less, some hotshot DC writers always feel like they got that big epic idea that can top the first Crisis... but that never ends well.

I don't think it topped it, but 52 was great.

by Anonymousreply 255December 7, 2018 12:49 AM

Here is a thought. Instead of rebooting something, create something new. then you are not bound to history. Malibu did it and then Marvel bought them and got rid of them. I think Image is DC, they tell some really interesting stories.

by Anonymousreply 256December 7, 2018 3:36 AM

The first Crisis sucked in the first place. I was a reader of several DC comics at the time, and they started breadcrumbing the upcoming crisis at least a year and a half to two years in advance. When it finally happened it was meh. All it did was fuck things up for the most part, and the subsequent reboots haven't done any better.

by Anonymousreply 257December 7, 2018 6:03 AM

The biggest properties after the Legion to be permanently fucked by the DC reboots are the Hawkman characters, especially the pre-Crisis Hawkwoman. Why on earth has it been 'Hawkgirl' ever since?

by Anonymousreply 258December 7, 2018 4:53 PM

I loved the first Crisis at the time. The repercussions really screwed things around though.

by Anonymousreply 259December 7, 2018 7:01 PM

When embarking on the New 52 DC rolled in some Vertigo and Wildstorm characters, so while not new, at least there were new enough to most readers that it felt different. I liked Voodoo who was incorporated from Vertigo but that it was cancelled.  I liked Pandora who was the catalyst of the New 52.  That character was partnered with The Phantom Stranger and The Question for Trinity of Sin, another great, but shortlived title.

The problem - from what I know of it - with the post-Crisis universe was that DC kept realizing there were loose strings so they would do another Crisis type event to clean it up.  Some things worked well like the return of Jason Todd.

However, these post New 52 changes from Rebirth and Convergence seems too much of a mess to even interest me to read. And the changes to evergreen characters like Superman were a disappointment.

by Anonymousreply 260December 7, 2018 7:15 PM

The show is pretty dark. Hawkwman's backstory, in Hank and Dawn, is depressing as hell.

by Anonymousreply 261December 7, 2018 7:38 PM

Hawk is not Hawkman. Different characters.

by Anonymousreply 262December 8, 2018 12:39 AM

Sorry, for the mixup.
The biggest properties after the Legion to be permanently fucked by the DC reboots are the Hawkman characters, especially the pre-Crisis Hawkwoman. Why on earth has it been 'Hawkgirl' ever since?

I never followed Hawkman closely, either pre or post Crisis. How were those characters fucked after the Crisis?

by Anonymousreply 264December 8, 2018 8:16 AM

After COIE, they were stuck with characters who were A) essentially the same character in the Golden and Silver Ages (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman), B) only from the Golden Age, C) only from the Silver Age, D) in both the Golden and Silver Ages, but were different characters.

The ones from B/C were largely fine to keep going forward. The A group usually got new backstories, where it was either streamlined (Batman) or basically brand new (Superman, Wonder Woman).

The D people were the biggest problem, but they confounded it by not having a consistent approach. Jay Garrick's Flash had existed on the same Earth as Barry Allen's. Alan Scott's Green Lantern got his power ring from one that had been tampered with by a member of the Green Lantern Corps. And then there were the Hawks...

So, the Golden Age Hawks, Carter and Sheira Hall got shuffled off with the rest of the Justice Society to battle endless in the realm of the Norse gods to prevent Ragnarok (don't ask). The Silver Age alien versions, Katar and Shayera Hol disappeared completely. They were replaced by new versions, Katar Hol and his partner (not wife) Shayera Thal. That version was like something out of a Reagan Era action movie, where Katar was going around being a brutal policeman and using guns.

Eventually, they did this incredibly convoluted thing where it was revealed that all of the versions of the Hawks were reincarnated versions of each other, which actually kind of works. This lead to the resurrection of Carter Hall. Somehow. They eventually introduced a new Hawkgirl, Kendra Saunders, who had committed suicide, and in the process got possessed by Shiera Hall, who I think was supposed to be her aunt. This had the very creepy effect of mixing up Shiera's memories with Kendra's, and left Carter in love with her and trying to convince her to be in love with him.

Shiera actually got resurrected in the Blackest Night event, but I don't think they ever actually did anything with that, and to the best of my knowledge, the only version that has been seen since the New 52 and into Rebirth has been Kendra.

I have a headache now.

by Anonymousreply 265December 8, 2018 12:45 PM

Thanks r265. I have a headache trying to make sense of all that! Wow, they really did complicate and fuck the Hawks in that process.

by Anonymousreply 266December 8, 2018 1:11 PM

It's actually even more complicated than R265's excellent precis suggests, because the silver age Hawks did appear after the Crisis for a while (they popped to up rather amusing effect in the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League), but were subsequently clumsily retconned into being some sort of imposters.

by Anonymousreply 267December 8, 2018 1:25 PM

They handled it better in Legends of Tomorrow complete with a hot Hawkman. Unfortunately, they mixed in Vandal Savage with their origin and fucked it up. They quickly got rid of them.

by Anonymousreply 268December 8, 2018 1:32 PM

p.s. I think the best handling of Hawkgirl/man was The Justice League cartoon, where she was an alien plant and the Thanagarians came to take over the earth it was revealed to the League she was a traitor.

by Anonymousreply 269December 8, 2018 1:38 PM
It's actually even more complicated than [R265]'s excellent precis suggests, because the silver age Hawks did appear after the Crisis for a while (they popped to up rather amusing effect in the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League), but were subsequently clumsily retconned into being some sort of imposters.

Also, Shayera Thal was not part of the infinitely reincarnating Hawks either. She appeared even after they introduced Kendra.

And yes, the DCAU version was the best version. She seemed to be influenced by Shayera Thal, so clearly as a character, she had her good points.

by Anonymousreply 270December 8, 2018 1:42 PM

Oh wow, I remember when they used Hawkman as a foil for the Justice Leaguers in the Bwa-ha-ha days. That was when I was getting into comics for the first time, reading back issues from the immediate Post-Crisis period. I was also reading Infinity Inc and it seemed they had to spend a lot of time explaining how these Earth 2 characters now fit into the unified DC universe.

Incidentally, the latest revision added the Watchmen characters to the main DC universe. That seems like a terrible idea. Though I guess it's kind of amusing that Captain Atom and Doctor Manhattan can now meet. (The Watchmen are ersatz versions of superheroes from Charlton Comics, which were folded into the DC universe during the first Crisis Yeah, the reboots make things LESS convoluted.)

by Anonymousreply 271December 8, 2018 2:35 PM

The silver age Hawks as illustrated by Joe Kubert were so gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 274December 10, 2018 6:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 275December 10, 2018 6:38 PM

r275, based on the show Donna Troy retired from her superhero days with Wonder Woman as did Dick Grayson from his days with Batman.

by Anonymousreply 276December 10, 2018 6:47 PM

I know I don’t find every single man attractive.

Also I notice this show did decide to flex their we-aren't-on-broadcast-TV muscles and show some butts in the Hawk and Dove episode, didn't expect that.

by Anonymousreply 283December 17, 2018 1:01 AM

The new Teen Titans were the best. Raven, I loved her whole story - where she went to the Justice League for help and Zatanna sensed her evil side, then it is revealed she used her empath powers to get the Teen Titans together. Brilliant. Let alone Trigon as the big bad and still a Darkseid level bad guy.

by Anonymousreply 284December 17, 2018 2:24 AM

I miss Kid Flash in this version. He was so hunky in the Wolfman/Perez series on par with Robin/Nightwing. He was always trying to go after Raven, but she was only good for giving him blue balls, so I imagine one of the other male Teen Titan could help poor Wally out in the shower!

by Anonymousreply 285December 17, 2018 2:45 AM

So did I, R284. Those years had the best iteration of the team, and IMO the best version of each character. Raven was so compelling...I am not a fan of what the assorted versions since have done to the character.

by Anonymousreply 286December 17, 2018 8:20 AM

I have to admit, despite it being super annoying, what they did with the origins of the Hawks and Donna Troy is pretty clever. Especially for DC.
However, these post New 52 changes from Rebirth and Convergence seems too much of a mess to even interest me to read. And the changes to evergreen characters like Superman were a disappointment.

I am a HUGE fan of the NEW 52. Fanboys hated it--and I hate them-- but it actually got me reading a fuckload of DC titles that I would NEVER read. DC finally gave their major characters some dimension after 1000 years. I actually looked forward to purchasing a fucking Superman book! This “Rebirth” bullshit really ruined that quality for me, and you are absolutely correct R260 about those goddamn changes.

Some changes STILL haven’t been explained--apparently, Doomsday Clock is supposed to answer those questions, but it’s been a year and nothing. If this was all a reality warp by “you know who”*(I don’t want to spoil it), why are the Titans still unfamiliar with Koriand’r and Victor Stone--BUT in the latest JL Odyssey series--fucking terrible, btw--Cyborg and Kory are old friends. Things like that are just fucking sloppy. At this point, the only DC books I look forward to are WW--begrudgingly because they really tossed some great character development and added Trevor fulltime, Batman, JL Dark--VERY GOOD and the JL--though I think it’s...inflated with this source wall shit.

Oh...and I don’t know if you remember but in one of the last NEW 52 JL stories--Darkseid Wars, Batman discovered the Joker’s real name and they haven’t FUCKING referenced that since.

by Anonymousreply 293December 23, 2018 6:54 AM
[R287] it was supposed to be forgotten. If you follow original cannon - the man who killed batman's parents is the one who eventually becomes the joker.

Oh, I didn’t know that...never really followed Batman Cannon THAT closely. So was that reference in the New 52 just part of the universe alteration by Manhattan ...and then "rebooted" back to cannon via “Rebirth”? Like WW going back to Themyscaria was "rebooted " back to her never being allowed to come back once she left? That's conflated AF.

by Anonymousreply 294December 24, 2018 12:49 PM

Wait, what? That's how they end season one? IMHO kind of an underwhelming cliffhanger. I was expecting a big ass showdown and it was really awkward how the show avoids to show Batman's / Bruce Wayne's face (the worst was Dick saying his monologue to a clock!).

by Anonymousreply 295December 25, 2018 12:14 PM

The only good thing about the finale was getting to see Dick's armpits and thighs. Not even the Superboy glimpse did nothing for me.

by Anonymousreply 296December 26, 2018 5:04 AM

R296 Let's face it the only reason to watch this show is to see Dick. That's the only one they cast right on the money. LOL

by Anonymousreply 297December 26, 2018 7:48 AM

r294 - it was the ironic plot twist used in comics. Uncle Ben's killer was the guy Spiderman didn't stop, The man who killed Batman's parents is dropped in chemicals by Batman to create the Joker, Superman's best friend was Lex Luthor who Superman accidentally caused to go bald and became his sworn enemy (never figured that one out - the guy was a super genius but could not cure baldness? In this case the Joker was retcon'ed to a no-name low life who was dropped in the chemical accidently by Batman - creating the Joker. I think the whole learning the Joker's real name was supposed to lead to the same thing - that Batman realizes he created the Joker, but the Joker created him when he learns his real name, realizing that was the guy who killed his parents. There was a storyline in Justice League where Jonn Jonz took Batman deep inside the mind of the Joker to reveal there was a normal good person deep at the heart of the Joker. It seems odd Jonn would not have known his real name having gone that deep into his mind. I think the problem with most of these shows and movies is a full lack of understanding of the history of these comics. I think Tim Burton's orginal Batman was the best, as well as the second with Catwoman. I think he really got the story telling right. Nolan's quasi high tech/martial arts borderline was not my cup of tea and they really fucked up Bane. I think of the recent movies, and shows, Wonder Woman and Aquaman got it the most right. I just watched Infinity War and thought it was not that great. They never explained how Thanos could beat Hulk like that, why Thanos was on this mission,...just a shit ton of plot holes and open storylines. How did Vision get the mind gem on his head?? It's just there...okay.

by Anonymousreply 298December 26, 2018 5:14 PM

Wow, Beast Boy has a horse dick. Fitting really.

by Anonymousreply 299December 26, 2018 6:04 PM
I think the problem with most of these shows and movies is a full lack of understanding of the history of these comics.

I think there's a lot to be forgiven with good writing because while there are preferred canons there is not one canon that can be used for these characters that will satisfy everyone. Batman was created nearly 80 years ago and there are countless ways his story has been told, as well as The Joker's (isn't there a storyline now that there are three Jokers in play?).

My issue with "Titans" has been the piecemeal way they have gone about the season with specialized episodes for characters that barely thread through the previous and subsequent episodes.  I can't be irked that this Robin is a killer and still uses Robin and not Nightwing seeing as he wants to distance himself from Batman when there is so much wrong with other facets of this show.
Nolan's quasi high tech/martial arts borderline was not my cup of tea and they really fucked up Bane.

I agree with the Bane part, but I loved Nolan's Batman because it plays into my accepted headcanon that Bruce is as warped as his rogues gallery; that Bruce is the alter-ego and Batman is the real person.
They never explained how Thanos could beat Hulk like that, why Thanos was on this mission,...just a shit ton of plot holes and open storylines.

What I didn't get about Infinity War was why couldn't Doctor Strange and Wong beat Thanos.  In the DCU magic trumps might because magic is unpredictable. IW had two or three magic wielders (if that is Scarlett Witch's power) and still couldn't be Thanos?

by Anonymousreply 312December 28, 2018 4:36 AM
it plays into my accepted headcanon that Bruce is as warped as his rogues gallery; that Bruce is the alter-ego and Batman is the real person.

Is that not canon? He seems like an obvious psycho to me. But then I'm in the minority that doesn't like Batman.

by Anonymousreply 313December 29, 2018 1:40 PM

R313 - often times driven to the edge but Batman has a no kill policy. He considers that regard for human life the line between him and the psychos. Right or wrong I guess. I mean you can put a man in a coma for life, disfigure them, give them life long injuries all for the sake of crime fighting.

by Anonymousreply 314December 29, 2018 2:12 PM

It's pretty canon I would say r313, the whole "Batman is his real self and Bruce Wayne is a mask" has been in a ton of Batman stories. It actually makes a good justification for his strict no-kill policy, it is the only thing that keeps him from going over the edge.

What confuses me about this series. is even though Batman is apparently strictly no kill, Dick Grayson was fine with ordering the death of dozens of people in the asylum episode. It seems like that was a big thing to just sweep under the rug.

by Anonymousreply 315December 29, 2018 2:38 PM

Fuck Batman.

I do.

by Anonymousreply 317December 29, 2018 3:03 PM

So do I.

by Anonymousreply 318December 29, 2018 3:05 PM

That makes sense because it didn't seem like a season finale at all r308. That's a big move to pull the episode. Wonder what the real reason was, guessing they wanted to make some significant story changes.

by Anonymousreply 319December 29, 2018 3:07 PM

The first episode is out now. Guess I'm going to find out.

by Anonymousreply 327February 16, 2019 2:04 PM

Well, they've stolen "Fox on the Run" from Guardians of the Galaxy.

by Anonymousreply 328February 16, 2019 2:11 PM

I already liked what I saw of The Doom Patrol in Titans but I really loved it after the first episode. It's great.

by Anonymousreply 329February 16, 2019 2:32 PM

Agreed. This actually makes DC Universe worth paying for.

I know the actress is an American, but is Rita supposed to be British, or basically doing Madonna's old schtick pretending to be British?

by Anonymousreply 330February 16, 2019 3:04 PM

I enjoyed the first episode, too.

by Anonymousreply 331February 16, 2019 3:29 PM
But is Rita supposed to be British, or basically doing Madonna's old schtick.

I think it's supposed to be the mid-Atlantic affectation like the actresses of Rita's generation.

by Anonymousreply 332February 16, 2019 3:34 PM

Well, Larry's secret boyfriend was hot. And there's something heartbreaking about how even before the accident, he'd already felt like a monster.

by Anonymousreply 333February 16, 2019 4:34 PM

Holy crap. Did someone at DC watch Legion and say, "What have we got that's weird?"

I read Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol when I was a kid and it blew my mind. Can't believe we're getting a TV show highly influenced by Morrison. I think I started bouncing in my seat when I saw the references to Crazy Jane in the opening credits. (I had heard she would appear but not that she would be a main character.) According to the intertubes, more characters from the Morrison run will be appearing. I can't wait!

Now we know why Titans looked so cheap. They were saving their money for Doom Patrol.

by Anonymousreply 334February 17, 2019 11:49 AM
According to the intertubes, more characters from the Morrison run will be appearing. I can't wait!

Yeah, they've said Danny the Street and I think Flex Mentallo will show up.

One would not have assumed they would have nailed it like this, but nailed it they did. They pretty much have the perfect cast. Even Brendon Fraser, in his current state, is exactly Cliff.

by Anonymousreply 335February 17, 2019 12:43 PM

I mean, what crazy timeline are we living in that has Mr. Nobody and Danny The Street on TV? They should throw in Willoughby Kipling, just for the joke of casting Matt Ryan.

Loving the nods to some of the visuals from the comics. They even recreated HBD's painting.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 336February 17, 2019 1:44 PM

I'm surprised (and impressed) that there's so much queer content. One would have thought that the canonically gay Danny would be it, but they've set up a really tragic story about Larry having to live in the alpha-male jet jock world and banging his mechanic, and clearly hating himself for it.

by Anonymousreply 337February 17, 2019 2:05 PM

Are they seriously going to have Bomer's pretty face hidden behind those bandages throughout the series? I mean, I get it in the case of Fraser's bloated face, but Bomer? We better get plenty of flashbacks of him frolicking in the grass with his man.

They kinda look like Kevin and Moose from Riverdale here, don't they? Except these two are understandably sneaking around back in the '60s and the other two are still sneaking around in the present day, which is a depressing thought.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 338February 18, 2019 12:00 AM

This is an easy gig for Bomer. With the exception of the flashbacks, he just provides the voice and another actor is his stand-in for other scenes.

by Anonymousreply 339February 18, 2019 12:14 AM

r339 I was wondering exactly that, i.e. how much acting is actually done by Fraser and Bomer under those masks, if any. Because there's some skill to that kind of acting as well. I can't recall which series it was I saw this in recently, but you could clearly tell there was an inexperienced stand-in doing the (very unsubtle) body motions to the voiceover.

by Anonymousreply 340February 18, 2019 12:29 AM

Yeah, apart from flashbacks, Fraser and Bomer are voice-over only.

by Anonymousreply 341February 18, 2019 12:33 AM

r341 Well, damn. I don't know how I feel about that, to be honest. I guess if I'm okay with Rocket Racoon and animation in general, which I am, this shouldn't bother me either. Still, I feel cheated somehow because I know there's an actual person in there. Our brains are so weird, is what I'm getting at.

by Anonymousreply 342February 18, 2019 12:40 AM

Tudyck's narration was amusing. I'm interested to see how he plays Mr. Nobody.

by Anonymousreply 343February 18, 2019 1:26 AM

I would fuck Tudyck. He's low key hot

by Anonymousreply 344February 18, 2019 1:50 AM

r343 Very amusing. It shocked me at first when he broke the fourth wall. The effects on him were nice as well when he finally showed up. They would have looked horrible even five years ago, I think.

by Anonymousreply 345February 18, 2019 1:56 AM

Agree, R344, he seems like he would be fun to fuck.

I enjoyed the partial/disjointed effect they used for his character, as well, R345.

Fraser's voice work is better than I expected. His voice holds more inflection than I realized it could so he's able to convey Robotman's emotions

I'm hoping they do more with Larry and his hot mechanic and the lady characters.

by Anonymousreply 346February 18, 2019 2:30 AM

I think the actor who plays Larry’s mechanic lover, is in three episodes this season.

by Anonymousreply 347February 18, 2019 3:34 AM

R347, Yes. I think he's in the next episode. Another episode in the middle of the season and one towards the end that they just shot a week or two ago since both he and Bomer instagramed from the set (where they were both obviously shooting outside). The other chair in the photo is the other actor's.

They do have a bunch of characters to deal and they've already said they're going to be introducing at least 5 more from Doom Patrol's run in just the first season.
Yeah, apart from flashbacks, Fraser and Bomer are voice-over only.

Luckily, one of the showrunners has said that they're going to be doing flashbacks the entire series. I'm taking it that they're going to do it like Arrow, where even if you finish a storyline via flashback, you'll see more of their lives in future seasons about other incidents that made them who they were.
I would fuck Tudyck. He's low key hot

I'm so happy to hear that I'm not the only one that has a thing for Tudyck. I'm not sure if it's the voice or the jaw but he definitely seems like he'd be lot of fun.

Shyborg

by Anonymousreply 350February 18, 2019 6:31 PM
They do have a bunch of characters to deal and they've already said they're going to be introducing at least 5 more from Doom Patrol's run in just the first season.

r348 Hot damn, I thought this was going to be the whole team. I'm actually more excited now that I know we're getting even more members. The Arrow reference made me cringe because those flashbacks were insufferable from the start and I just kept skipping them. However, the flashbacks in the first episode here were so much fun that I wouldn't mind seeing them regularly. Making them stylized and super snappy is the key, I think. If a flashback is plodding and feels like a chore, you're doing it wrong.

Tudyk has such a nice rich voice, I didn't get annoyed once with his narration. Those whimsical self-aware moments can get awful really easily if you're not careful, but he was just perfect.

by Anonymousreply 352February 18, 2019 6:36 PM
I think they may be planning to move Cyborg over to Titans after this season.

It seems like Beast Boy will at least appear on Doom Patrol again at some point since the two actors decided to spend the day hanging out a few months ago.
Hot damn, I thought this was going to be the whole team. I'm actually more excited now that I know we're getting even more members.

At the TCAs they confirmed Beard Hunter, Celsius, Lodestone, and Danny The Street are coming.

Timothy Dalton confirmed Dorothy Spinner since he was shooting the episode.

The auditions that were finalists for Flex Mentallo (Brett Davis and Evan Parke) were posted online (and then pulled from Vimeo) so we know one of them as the character is coming.

Will Kemp as Mento has been floated around but so far it's unconfirmed.

They're still not quite done shooting until March but they start back up again in August since the show was already renewed.

The five more characters aren't necessarily going to have big roles. According to imdb, there are two characters that appear in one episode each. I couldn't find any reference to a couple of the rumored Morrison characters. Of course imdb isn't infallible.

I like the idea of eventually swapping Cyborg and Beast Boy, mostly in hopes of seeing a better-CGI BB. I also think Gar might bring a more unique dynamic than Cyborg, whose themes have some overlap with Cliff.

by Anonymousreply 354February 18, 2019 6:58 PM

Whoops, posting at the same time as R353.

by Anonymousreply 355February 18, 2019 6:59 PM

Hi Nyssa! at R353!

And yeah, I'm guessing it will be like Titans where maybe you'll see a character pop up for a few scenes just to let us know they're in the world or in some circumstances they'll share a spotlight episode with someone else. If they keep up the quality they had in the premiere, I have no doubt (fingers crossed) that the show won't get crowded.

Based on the Flex Mentallo sides the actors were given it seems like he'll be one who gets more than just a few scenes. The same would probably apply to Dorothy since Dalton implied that was the focus of the episode. We'll see :)

by Anonymousreply 356February 18, 2019 7:03 PM
I'd imagine it doesn't take a ton of subscribers for these services to be profitable.

I would think it would, actually. Both this series and ST: Disocvery must be expensive to produce.

by Anonymousreply 357February 18, 2019 7:05 PM

Anyone else felt wistful about Penny Dreadful and simultaneously hungry for the new reboot premiering later this year as soon as Timothy Dalton opened his mouth? He's another one with a ridiculously gorgeous voice.

r357 Netflix reportedly covers the entire budget for DISCO as the show is such huge hit for them overseas, so that immediately takes the burden off CBS. I wonder if there's some cost-sharing involved here as well. I mean, Titans is available on Netflix, will Doom Patrol be as well?

by Anonymousreply 358February 18, 2019 7:10 PM

Bona to vada, 353!

We don't even know yet that the show won't mostly be a freak-of-the-week format -- This week the Patrol meets Mento! Next week: Can they save the girl whose magnetic powers are killing her? -- but I hope the storytelling will be more ambitious than that.

To expand on and somewhat counter my comment about Cyborg...the extended trailer shows that he is already some kind of super agent/hero. So I guess he will be the high-functioning freak and (de facto?) field leader. That gives him a useful and distinct role.

I confess I torrented the pilot. But I'm going to subscribe. I want to support this show.

by Anonymousreply 359February 18, 2019 7:16 PM

Wait, Titans is available on Netflix? I thought Titans is a DC exclusive only available on their subscription based channel ?

by Anonymousreply 360February 18, 2019 7:18 PM

After Titans ran on DC Universe, it was licensed to Netflix. It helps bring awareness to the series in hopes that people will subscribe to DC Universe.

by Anonymousreply 361February 18, 2019 7:23 PM

And Netflix goes along with that? A bit surprising to be honest.

by Anonymousreply 362February 18, 2019 7:29 PM

Not if they get it cheaply. It's content they don't have to produce themselves.

by Anonymousreply 363February 18, 2019 7:31 PM

r362 I think it's only on Netflix outside the USA. So it's pretty much just an international broadcast deal.

by Anonymousreply 364February 18, 2019 7:34 PM

r364. Thank you. That makes sense. Didn't think about that.

by Anonymousreply 365February 18, 2019 7:43 PM

Another good episode of Doom Patrol tonight. I like that they've established the team dynamics at a faster pace than Titans.

by Anonymousreply 366February 23, 2019 7:59 AM

I thought so, too, R366.

by Anonymousreply 367February 23, 2019 8:34 AM

Mr. Nobody had so many good lines. "Grant Morrison fans, Reddit trolls and the three new fans." LOL

Still not sure about this version of Crazy Jane, but Diane Guerrero is killing it.

There is something suspicious about Larry and Rita's apathy. They have been living with their conditions for decades but seem to have made little progress. The Chief is messing with them somehow. Don't ever trust Niles Caulder.

She really is. She's as impressive as James McAvoy in "Split" and "Glass".
On another show, I would think the fourth-wall breaks would be annoying, but for some reason, it works here.

True but I worry it'll become overused.

Fraser is so fantastic. He gets great lines. "Oh, Cyborg! The guy who nobody asked to be here who pokes his nose into business that ain't his? Hi!"

by Anonymousreply 371February 23, 2019 2:38 PM

Is that Peter Herman in the picture with Rita in the lower left side of her mirror at the end of the second episode?

by Anonymousreply 372February 23, 2019 4:14 PM
There is something suspicious about Larry and Rita's apathy. They have been living with their conditions for decades but seem to have made little progress. The Chief is messing with them somehow. Don't ever trust Niles Caulder.

R368, I think their apathy is totally in character. They're both scared and don't understand their powers.

He helped them survive their accidents but he didn't teach them how to live in the outside world.

It has been decades and he didn't think they should go out into town because they weren't ready.

He was right. That trip was a disaster, they weren't ready.

On the other hand, the only reason they're making progress is because they know they need to in order to find him.

They're leaving the apathy behind because they have to find someone they care about.

You could also argue that it says something about the characters that Rita returning to her life as a movie star or Larry returning to find his children wasn't enough of a motivator for them to leave.

Robot Man on the other hand clearly wants to find his daughter.

by Anonymousreply 373February 24, 2019 3:07 PM
You could also argue that it says something about the characters that Rita returning to her life as a movie star or Larry returning to find his children wasn't enough of a motivator for them to leave.

I honestly doubt Larry would have wanted to go back to his old life. He seemed to have hated himself.

by Anonymousreply 374February 24, 2019 3:10 PM

The Chief is a plot device driving the story and the character development forward. The gang has to leave their comfort zone to face all kinds of challenges to get him back. I don't know the source material but it seems like the Chief isn't a very nice man and the others will find that out and they may see the Chief in a different light when they see him again.

by Anonymousreply 375February 24, 2019 3:11 PM

R374, While he may have hated himself because he was gay in the 50s, it doesn't seem like he ever bothered to turn on a TV and find out that things are different now.

I think him hating himself has to be more than just being gay.

It seems like his lover wanted him to choose him and leave his wife while his wife wanted him to be at home more and in the end (after the crash) he ended up accidentally killing his lover because his whole body is radioactive and he probably didn't know and his wife may have done something horrible as well.

But he never thought during the past few decades to see what happened to his boys? I could buy that if he also saw himself as a killer as in, "They're better off without me."

Until they saw that, it's strange to me that he or anyone else there never ran a google search to see if they were alive.

by Anonymousreply 376February 24, 2019 3:23 PM

His body is radioactive, R376, and the bandages not only cover his disfigurement but protect those around him from being harmed from the radioactivity given off by the being his body houses. I believe his lover (and perhaps his family) were killed by exposure to him, prior to him being swathed in them. It would explain the flashback of his lover, in the co-pilot seat of the jet with the terrible scarring, accusing Larry of killing him. And, that along with his appearance might be why he feels like a 'monster' currently, instead of being a homosexual.

Chief was an interesting character in the comics. Very secretive. I'm interested to see if the show stops there or goes farther and has him becoming more of a manipulative, shady person. And how they will deal with him in regard to Celsius, too.

Fraser really is doing a wonderful job with the voice work.

by Anonymousreply 377February 24, 2019 7:13 PM
The Chief is a plot device driving the story and the character development forward. The gang has to leave their comfort zone to face all kinds of challenges to get him back.

Right, and this kind of story would usually feature young people and/or people with newly-acquired abilities. It is a very specific choice for everyone to have had their abilities for decades. We don't know how long Larry and Rita have been with the Chief, but they are there when Cliff arrives in..was it 1988? So they have been puttering around the mansion for at least thirty years. Thirty years of stasis! Thirty years of being scared and not controlling their powers. No interest in the outside world. I just don't buy it. There is another layer to this onion.

Of course I was totally wrong about the first season of Legion, so what do I know.
he ended up accidentally killing his lover because his whole body is radioactive

I think so too.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Cyborg in this. So far he fits in fine and the actor, while not the best in this bunch, seems competent.

by Anonymousreply 378February 25, 2019 2:00 AM

He's the best live action Cyborg I've seen. Much better than Justice League's Ray Fisher and has more personality than Smallville's Cyborg played by Lee Thompson Young.

Good question as New 52 changed that backstory and made Conner the clone of Lois, Clark and their son Jon Lane Kent.

by Anonymousreply 384February 28, 2019 3:45 AM

Now that I think about it they will have Conner be the clone of Lex and Superman because Geoff Johns is involved with Titans and he was the one who came up with the idea to retcon it so that Conner's human DNA didn't come from a Cadmus scientist but from Lex.

A great actor of course, but I can't believe they went so old.

by Anonymousreply 399April 11, 2019 6:01 PM

Isn't Wayne supposed to be semi-retired on this show, anyway? So Glen works perfectly for the role.

I'm just glad they finally cast the character as that "Oh, he's just around the corner" schtick from the first season was wearing thin on me and got laughable towards the end. Hate it when shows do that.

Everything to do with Trigon was pretty shit. After all the buildup from last season Raven essentially just tells him to fuck off and it's over. And yeah Ian Glen would probably make a better Alfred than Bruce Wayne.

But the rest of the stuff made me interested enough to keep watching. Letting Kori and Donna go off to do their own thing, while Dick babysits Raven and Beastboy should let everyone get some more characterisation, and not fight for screentime as much. Jason and Hawk and Dove was a pretty funny grouping I hope we get more of them. Also I never thought this would be the show that confirms Batman anally violates his Robins.

Dove's wig looks better, but that actress is pretty shit. Did you notice she was smiling when Kory was explaining to them what was happening inside the house? Posing like they were filming an Insta short! She has that one facial expression and that's it. Jason and Donna intrigue me the most.
Also I never thought this would be the show that confirms Batman anally violates his Robins.

Say WHAT? How could I have missed that part? Though to be fair, I'm on Duolingo when I'm watching non-Peak TV shows. 😁
Jason: He didn't tell you about the second one? It's in a place he's never going to find
Hawk: Ewww

1:56 In that video. I mean I could be reading too much into it. But going by Hawks reaction I'm assuming the implication was he put it pretty deep in their groin or butt. In Dicks case presumably after heavily drugging him.

by Anonymousreply 412September 8, 2019 2:23 PM

Oh, yeah, I did catch that part. I thought you meant "anally violates" in a jokey way to mean they had regular anal sex with each other. That's what happens when you're on DL too much and your mind is in the gutter all the time, I guess...

by Anonymousreply 413September 8, 2019 2:29 PM

Somebody needs to pay the💡 bill.

by Anonymousreply 414September 8, 2019 2:37 PM

I have noticed that this show is super dark, yes. Even relative to other superhero shows.

by Anonymousreply 415September 8, 2019 2:43 PM

r414 The scene in 410 is actually the best lit scene in that entire episode. Shoutout to Bruce Wayne for bothering to pay his power bill I guess

by Anonymousreply 416September 8, 2019 2:44 PM

I chuckled towards the end when Robin saw the new training place. Is that place actually stylish, or does it just appear that way because we can't see half the shit in there? 😂

by Anonymousreply 417September 8, 2019 2:48 PM

yeah you'd think the Batcave would have had better training facilities than that medium sized gym that for some reason had a Japanese decor.

I just got to where Iain appears and had to come here to post this, his American accent is yikes.

by Anonymousreply 419September 8, 2019 4:08 PM

The Trigon conclusion was INCREDIBLY underwhelming. Seriously, they couldn't come up with something better than that? "Raven banishes Trigon" is like a storypoint on a whiteboard that gets fleshed out later, but no one bothered to flesh it out.

And sorry, but Iain Glen is just too old a pick to be Bruce Wayne. His AARP ass is still out there fighting with the Justice League?

by Anonymousreply 420September 8, 2019 4:25 PM
And sorry, but Iain Glen is just too old a pick to be Bruce Wayne. His AARP ass is still out there fighting with the Justice League?

Glen looks older than he is. He's 58, one year older than Tom Cruise and nine years younger than Liam Neeson.

by Anonymousreply 421September 8, 2019 4:29 PM

Glen does have the misfortune of looking older than his actual age, but even his actual age of 58 is a very old depiction of Bruce Wayne.

Batfleck was an older, grizzeled portray of the character, and he was just in his early 40s. And Glen just doesn't seem like Bruce to me, talented actor but I think he was miscat.

by Anonymousreply 422September 8, 2019 4:46 PM

I love how frequently Beast Boy is naked. But we need to see more of his body. We know Ryan isn’t shy.

by Anonymousreply 423September 8, 2019 8:38 PM

So, the first episode of season two was originally supposed to be the finale of season one, right? Was it all delayed in order to include Ian Glen as Bruce Wayne? Kind of underwhelming imho. Loved the banter between Hawk and new Robin. The whole scene where the team said good-bye to each other was nice.

by Anonymousreply 424September 9, 2019 10:31 AM
The whole scene where the team said good-bye to each other was nice.

That was so nice that I was starting to think it must be just another illusion by Trigon. But no, I think Doom Patrol already covered that trick.

by Anonymousreply 425September 9, 2019 10:38 AM

Yes, originally this episode was supposed to be the season finale of last season r424. You can see how the girl that plays Raven has grown from scenes they filmed originally and they filmed later. Apparently they weren't happy with the finished product and had spent their budget so they shelved it for the time being.

by Anonymousreply 426September 9, 2019 12:08 PM

Just watched the second episode of season 2 and I like the set-up. Three different teams which will very likely find their way to each other.

by Anonymousreply 427September 14, 2019 3:18 PM

I also enjoyed this episode. Loved seeing new metahumans with cool powers, and SF looks great with that blue filter. Dove's acting still bothers me; she was smiling while the guy was breaking up with her!

Jason and Gar are just the cutest things ever, aren't they? Their nips were in full salute at one point in the same scene. Such competent actors as well; no false note to be seen. I adore Gar's "Meow" T-shirt! 😍

Dick's hair looks so wiggy at times. Needs less sculpting, I think.

by Anonymousreply 428September 15, 2019 10:31 AM

Jason's pretty hot in a basic White boy kind of way. And congratulations to the writer who decided Robin would use the Batcomputer for porn. Because of course a teenager would do that

by Anonymousreply 432October 11, 2019 3:34 PM

Obviously Jason survives the fall, I mean it was filmed forever ago and the episode is already out by now. Though I see that poll was posted last week.

Jason has to die at some point though, him getting killed and Bruce and Dick having to live with that guilt is a defining part of who the character is. Plus of course the whole Red Hood thing.

r436, did you forget that Beast Boy showed his naked ass in the first season? Also, Hawkman.

R435 yo, hold up - isn't Connor/Kon meant to be Tim Drake's bestie? What is this cosying up to Jason noise all about? And where is Vic/Cyborg?

I'm fresh to this show so clearly have a lot of catching up to do on the changes to established canon. I understand it's a new different take for a new generation but certain things shouldn't change too much or the whole dramatic arc falls apart (then again, Infinite Earths destroyed all storylines in the books, anyways). I can live with altered Robins, but I pray this show does not ruin Terra/Tara Markov who was the LOML when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 452October 17, 2019 11:03 PM

Tim Drake doesn't (yet) exist in this universe, and so far the only cosying up they've done so far is him saving Jason's life.
unwatchable...for 12 yr olds…..real bad

Titans is actually one of the best and most adult superhero shows I've seen. The CW DC shows seem juvenile next to Titans. Obviously if all superhero shows seem childish to you then Titans isn't any better, though. You really have to be in a certain mindset to get superheroes, and unfortunately many times it means lowering the bar. I doubt many adults would watch many non-superhero shows if they were made as badly as shows like Legends of Tomorrow or Arrow these days. Titans feels so fresh next to all that crap because if just feels so solidly made. Not that it's perfect but still. And yes, you still have to like superheroes to be able to enjoy it.

by Anonymousreply 461October 18, 2019 3:44 PM

To me Titans feels like the Nolan Batman movies. Gritty melodrama about heroes who struggle with their own inner demons. They are not as whimsical as, say, the Tim Burton Batman movies.

by Anonymousreply 462October 18, 2019 3:49 PM

Titans is much more comic booky than Nolan Batman movies. Nolan tried to have Batman exist as a plausible real world concept. This show exists in the crazy reality of comic books where you have scientists making a superpowered dog. But yes, it does take that concept to a more gritty adult tone.

The closest comparison would be the Snyder movies, which attempted to do the same thing.

Speaking of adult tone, they gave us a shot of Joshua Orpin's butt again this episode. And even some tits! I think this is the first episode that couldn't have been shown on say FX.

by Anonymousreply 463October 19, 2019 12:46 AM

Also Iain Glen has been working on his American accent, it was far from perfect, but still a noticeably improved attempt from the first episode he filmed.

by Anonymousreply 464October 19, 2019 12:56 AM

This ep was HORRIBLE. Hated all the bruce bits, everytime he was onscreen it was jarring. He was written too out of character. The previous Connor ep was decent but this ep was absolute fail.

by Anonymousreply 465October 19, 2019 12:57 AM

r465 I didn't like it either. Bruce's apparition following/ haunting him around was such a cliché. And why the fuck would they pair up Jason and Deathstroke's daughter? That came out of nowhere and they have zero chemistry together.

Having said that, always appreciate seeing Superboy's tooshie. And his tatas look so meaty, they're driving me crazy. 🤤

by Anonymousreply 466October 19, 2019 1:48 AM

Well there were two things with this ep.

One) This wasn't a plot driven ep, it was a breather "filler" ep. Meant to explore the mental ramificantions of the trauma from Dick and Jason. And also to save some money since they've had a lot of expensive episodes.

Two) I still think Iain Glen was the wrong casting as Bruce, and having this ep where we get a lot of his (not technically, it is just Dick's perception ) Bruce Wayne you realize that you don't love seeing him be Bruce Wayne.

'

by Anonymousreply 467October 19, 2019 4:37 AM

Fair points about Iain, though he is at least a decent actor and has a convincing presence. I don't honestly know who would be good to cast as Bruce in this case. I'd say Kevin Conroy if he were a bit younger, I guess Bruce is supposed to be in his 50s at this point.

Jason needs a break and Connor needs frequent nudity and a boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 468October 19, 2019 4:01 PM
Jason needs a break and Connor needs frequent nudity and a boyfriend.

Yes! 🙏 Oh, and I felt so bad for teary-eyed Jason after he got gang-handed by everyone over those pranks. People, this kid just survived a kidnapping, torture, and a fall from a skyscraper. What part of that makes you think he'd start pulling pranks all of a sudden on those who saved him? So bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 469October 19, 2019 4:07 PM

R469 Connor should become Jason's new BFF, possibly with benefits.

by Anonymousreply 470October 19, 2019 4:12 PM

Superboy and Robin are normally paired up as besties.

They did that with Tim Drake and Connor, and did it again with Damien and Jonathan.

by Anonymousreply 471October 19, 2019 4:17 PM

Well, they ought to be paired as fuck buddies now. It's 2019; get with it!

by Anonymousreply 472October 19, 2019 4:20 PM

R472 Nah, Connor's superhose would damage Jason's poor little pink hole.

by Anonymousreply 473October 19, 2019 4:40 PM

r468 That's easy. Jason O'Mara who voiced Batman in the animated content. Or Dylan McDermott, Levi Schieber, Damon Dayoub, Victor Webster or a bunch of european actors, there's heaps that could work.

by Anonymousreply 474October 20, 2019 12:11 AM
I guess Bruce is supposed to be in his 50s at this point.

Which is funny given current comics continuity is Bruce is about a dozen years older than Dick. Dick is supposed to be 26 in this show, you could get away with going as young as 38 for Batman. Having Bruce be 60 is their own choice.

by Anonymousreply 475October 20, 2019 7:31 AM

Victor Webster would certainly look the part - don't know if he could pull it off.

Yeah, I'm slowly starting to get that impression myself as well. 👀

by Anonymousreply 480October 25, 2019 3:31 PM
And why the fuck would they pair up Jason and Deathstroke's daughter? That came out of nowhere and they have zero chemistry together.

What's strange about that is, in the books and the animated series Dick has a parallel relationship with Slade's second protégé Terra/Tara. They aren't ever involved romantically and don't even really become friends, but both share the same background as Slade's former apprentices and worked together on the Titans for a short time. The original Terra doesn't arrive until after Jason's death and sadly doesn't live long enough to ever meet the Red Hood (they'd have a lot to talk about..)

As for Rose/Ravager - the Titans of the books do befriend her gradually, but she has no particular special relationship with any Robin. In fact, I think she only ever gets to know Dick & Tim, and I'm not sure she knows enough about the Batfam to learn of Jason's existence. This decision is weird, but I see it as AU semi-canon at this point.

I should've waited with my question about Chella Man until I saw the episode. All is revealed. And it's a shame as I actually teared up several times. During friggin' Titans.

He had great chemistry with everyone and also a cool power. Now we're saddled with his bitch sister. 😒

by Anonymousreply 482October 25, 2019 7:24 PM
In the aftermath of Dick’s confession, the Titans’ world is rocked to the core – and Dick’s fear that his secret would break up the Titans comes true. Abandoning Titans Tower, the heroes all go their separate ways. Hank and Dawn return to Wyoming, Jason and Rose leave together, and Donna agrees to take Rachel with her. Kory, meanwhile, is surprised to hear from Faddei (guest star Robbie Jones), who’s returned with bad news from her home planet. by Anonymousreply 485November 4, 2019 10:31 PM

Yeah, they're all very dramatic and brooding all the time. I guess that's the price of wanting to distance yourself from those CW superhero shows... I thought Doom Patrol had a way better balance of classic action scenes and experimental, prestige-y stuff. This show comes across as just darkly-lit soap at times. Kind of a wasted season in a way.

by Anonymousreply 486November 4, 2019 10:37 PM

Such a boring episode. I had to FF through most of the prison stuff because it was such a cliché. Nothing we haven't seen before. Literally – I swear they used the exact same camera angles and filters in the prison yard as in the American Gods season one premiere. 😕

Thank god there's three more left; I was convinced for the duration of the episode that this was the season finale before I looked it up later.

The two redeeming things about this episode were shirtless Beast Boy and being introduced to Orel De La Mota, who played one of the Latino inmates. He seems sweet and his Insta is... interesting. Looks like he's kinda sorta half-bearding with his best friend. I know he'll probably read this because he has Google Alerts set up, but that's showbiz and DL, honey, so don't take it personally. 😘

by Anonymousreply 488November 9, 2019 12:59 AM

Orpin's a young newbie, so I'm not surprised they're milking his ass for all it's worth. Wish they'd do the same with Jason and Beast Boy...

by Anonymousreply 489November 9, 2019 1:05 AM

r487 I agree. It was very boring. The previous ep frustrated me and so did this one. Very lazy and uninspired writing.

R18 precisely. In fact, thanks to Dick the Titans team was based in part on the tenet ideals of The Batman - in particular "thou shalt not kill". Strictly speaking by this logic they shouldn't ever be using guns, either, but count on that happening before Jason becomes Red.

by Anonymousreply 496November 9, 2019 7:27 PM

As much as I'm appreciating Thwaite's bod, I have to admit that so far I'm liking the animated Nightwings way better as characters.

Hell, even LEGO's version is more entertaining and in-character, at least to me. Same goes for Big Bird. It remains to be seen whether the FAMILY MATTERS versions of Jason & Tim are also superior...

The prison scenes had absolutely nothing in common with American Gods. In fact the whole prison thing was well written and executed. I was just thinking right when the guys were taking off their handcuffs before trying to break free how well this show is written. They managed to make those two guys seem very human and you really wanted to see them get out, which is not an easy feat since they only had like 5 minutes of screen time. Bravo.

Love it or hate it there's no denying that Titans keeps you on your toes. In an earlier post I bitched about everything being too dramatic and wanted to see them fight more baddies but that said I'm still enjoying mostly everything I'm seeing.

More ass shots, can't go wrong with that.

by Anonymousreply 504November 28, 2019 7:31 PM

I wouldn't say boring. The quality, which is high, stays the same throughout. The show is a pleasure to watch, especially if you just take it like it is without expecting more.

by Anonymousreply 505November 28, 2019 8:35 PM

It's not doing anything I haven't seen before. And with all those flashbacks, it feels like Arrow at times.

The finale was an improvement, though I don't understand that Donna scene coming out of nowhere. Second season was a bit of a miss for me, Superboy's tooshie notwithstanding. When he was standing in that field with Thwaites, I couldn't stop thinking about them fucking in the trailer later on.

by Anonymousreply 506November 29, 2019 11:22 PM

So much death! I love Dick, who needs to show some ass. I can’t believe he was in prison without a shower scene. I also dig Beast Boy and Jason Todd. Dove has grown on me.

by Anonymousreply 507December 1, 2019 7:14 PM

R507 Agreed. A missed opportunity at some Dick prison porno was a real tragedy.

by Anonymousreply 508December 1, 2019 7:35 PM

Not the strongest season finale, it was actually quite a mess mostly because the latter death scene was written so poorly. They clearly needed at least two episodes to tell all that happened. But still, the show is a pleasure to watch. However I do hope next season will be more like the best episodes from seasons one and two, and mostly unlike this finale.

I did like Nightwing strutting around in his new suit. And Superboy is always so easy on the eyes. I enjoy watching shows where I start wondering the dick sizes of the guys I fancy. In this case it's Dick and Connor. And obviously Hank who I remember showing a huge vpl on season one in one of his earliest scenes but disappointingly I noticed he was now clearly wearing some kind of cod piece.

by Anonymousreply 509December 2, 2019 9:04 PM

I think Connor should save Jason from himself with some tender loving.

Dick needs a Barbarella cross-over where he is captured and put into the newly rebuilt Excessive Machine (mask still on, of course). He'd overload it again, of course, but not until he was left in a warm and sticky exhausted mess.

Connor and Dick could have a limited-run series where they team up as Da Ass Boys.

by Anonymousreply 510December 2, 2019 9:22 PM

Connor's every shot is boner-inducing.

The death of Donna was contrived. Why didn't Connor see it and run lightning quick? Why is an electric tower there in the first place? Dumb.

There has never been a carnival in modern Golden Gate Park. It would have been in Civic Center.

I wonder if the actress wanted out? The death was so shitty and nonsensical it can't have been planned from the beginning. Still at least it wasn't Jason.

It sort of sounded like Donna didn't really [italic] really[/italic] die.

Donna Troy is such an important part of Titan history and I can't believe there killed her off - Gotta be more to it. I mean, with the whole new "Wonder Woman" movie coming out - Its such a good marketing thing..

Did she die in the comics? Are they following any of the comics storylines.
