Twitter is for mentally ill people, especially those who have those little check marks.

This kind of thing is why I can never go full on with taking care of other people - I have boundaries that know that this kind of thing would happen. I don't mind doing some stuff and have done but giving myself completely over to it without recompense of some sort isn't my thing. I think what he should do is directly tell the people he cares for what he wants from them rather than expect them to mind-read him, and if they don't want to reciprocate, then he should move on and stop taking care of them.

There are threads not unlike this on DL too. There was a recent one by a guy who said he'd taken care of his parents for 10 years and that he had nothing himself to show for it. He sounded like he was being sent crazy over it.

This is probably a byproduct of my having been on the internet too long but I have a real aversion to strangers on the internet expecting me to care about them. I have empathy and I do care about anyone who is going through a tough time, and I feel badly for Yashar, but there's also this weird expectation that I'm *supposed* to care about him because of who he is. I don't.

When I'm on Twitter and someone I know retweets a plea for comfort and/or money because some verified person with a lot of followers is going through a hard time, all I feel is irritation. Don't make demands just because you're Twitter famous.

I don't know who that is r18 but he's been here for years, every few months he posts that he's going to kill himself either now or when the parent(s) he's caring for dies. He seems to also be the one who posts occasional threads where he tells a story about how someone who was a caregiver for parents killed themselves after the parents died. I don't know what he wants. Is he a misery troll or does he want help? We can't help him.

To me as a mental health professional, this sort of outward attention-seeking and validation is not only not supportive to treatment/ therapy, but quite the opposite.

Talking about mental health is great. However, just because you are passionate about the issue it doesn’t mean that you have to make the issue all about yourself. Your own unique experiences cannot be applied to other people, and vice versa. The problem I have with SM influencers and Prince Harry is that instead of highlighting mental health, they make the issue all about themselves and their own struggles. Instagram too, you don't need to follow people who post photos of themselves. There are thousands of photographers who do everything from nature photos to street scenes, running shoe companies that post photos from races, sports teams and leagues that post videos and photos from games, etc.

But some kind of inpatient facility may help - didn't someone say that his family is rich? He seems to have a lot of money to give out to people so he probably can pay for a decent place.

It’s another way for privileged people to be seen as victims as it’s the only avenue for which they can credibly claim victimhood.

Every negative emotion/ feeling is magnified to crisis level. Perfectly healthy emotions such as sadness, disappointment, or regret, for instance, are made out to be negatives, as if well-adjusted human beings are to go through life without experiencing any of these things.

Eventually, Ali took an even more active role in her comeback, writing a glowing profile of Griffin for New York. When Ali said he was coming to L.A. in the spring of 2018, Griffin invited him to stay at her 13,000-square-foot Bel-Air mansion. According to a source close to Griffin, he ended up living there for nine months. (Ali insists he stayed less than six.)

Playing a similar role for Griffin that he’d played for Newsom and Buell, Ali became the comic’s confidante-slash-executive assistant, though he was never on Griffin’s payroll. He took an active role in managing Griffin’s social media accounts, helped her set up a merchandise company, and came to her defense in a property dispute by posting an embarrassing audio clip of a wealthy neighbor screaming expletives. He made a brief cameo in a Keeping Up With the Kardashians Christmas special, which he attended as Griffin’s guest. He did Griffin’s grocery shopping and cooking, jobs that usually fell to Griffin’s paid staff. In exchange, she let him live in her home rent-free and lent him one of her cars. But as the months wore on, Ali became increasingly reclusive, holing up in his bedroom and rarely leaving the house. Staff members assumed he was busy writing, but people around Griffin grew concerned when he started receiving official government mail at her home address.

One evening in the fall of 2018, Griffin invited journalist Joan Walsh, the national affairs correspondent for The Nation and a former political analyst for CNN and MSNBC, to join her for dinner. After Ali made an appearance, Walsh began probing Griffin about the nature of her relationship with him.
