Has anyone here ever seen a ghost?

Yes, I know this isn't a paranormal forum, was merely curious. I myself did see something I can't quite explain when I rented a room years ago.

Go on...

by Anonymousreply 1December 11, 2021 9:15 PM

A reminder that the FEELING a ghost is in your house is often the result of a gas leak. You could die. Carrie Poppy has a popular podcast where they examine religions, claims of the supernatural, or products that dabble in pseudo-science (there's always bullshit involved) but once came home and was convinced there was a ghost. Gas leak that might have killed her that night.

There are also sound frequencies that trigger the brain into practically hallucinating ghosts. Often found in stone underground tunnels.

Hmm, most interesting R2. I saw a shadowy figure in a room with curly hair in the room I rented. No joke. No drugs. No sleep deprivation. The landlady's deceased husband had curly hair and curiously after I saw it her boyfriend mentioned that her husband had been a real jerk, to put it mildly. I saw his photo one time. I don't expect anyone to believe me.

by Anonymousreply 3December 11, 2021 10:16 PM

I haven’t seen one, but an object flew across the room at me, it freaked me out for half a second, then I burst out laughing when I realized it was just someone/thing trying to get my attention, & it was harmless.

by Anonymousreply 4December 11, 2021 10:19 PM

I believe you, R3.

by Anonymousreply 5December 11, 2021 10:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 6December 11, 2021 10:47 PM

Yes, shortly after my sister died at 29, I saw her shadow in the house where we grew up.

by Anonymousreply 7December 11, 2021 10:53 PM

Someone told me ghost apparitions are actually light interacting with "waveforms" in air pressure. The reason the light takes a human shape is because you interact with the ambient "waveforms" in your house as you move around, so the light fills in a gap you've left sometimes. Also why apparitions are sometimes just one body part.

I obviously don't understand it, but it sounded cool.

by Anonymousreply 8December 11, 2021 11:32 PM

Yes, maybe. when I was ten my family went on an If-it-is-Tuesday-this-must-be -Belgium type European vacation. When we went to Versailles, my mother was talking the ear off some poor guy; so, I took a walk in the garden. Later , when we were on the guided tour, I asked what movie was being filmed. (The Slipper and the Rose had just finished filming at a chateau we were at earlier. ) The guide said nothing was filming. I described what I had seen: what I assumed were actors in period clothing. After the tour, my mother and I were sent to an office and I made a formal description of what I saw. Being ten, I did not think much of it other than adults are weird. It wasn't until decades later that someone suggested I read "An Adventure”. What I saw matched a great deal what the two English women say they saw.

by Anonymousreply 9December 11, 2021 11:45 PM

r8 I recently checked out a cave and there's a specific stone you can shine your flashlight on--the light bounces around inside the rock for a few seconds after you remove the light source. i can see how that could occur with humans moving around in an environment with various airflows

No, because I do not want to.

But I do love to read about others’ experiences.

by Anonymousreply 14December 12, 2021 12:39 AM

The mind can project so much. When I was cleaning out my grandfather’s house, I’d occasionally get spooked. He wasn’t taking his meds and started hallucinating about other people being in the house - ie a woman with a baby under his bed. He also told me his mother appeared in the kitchen while he was searching for his wallet. Oh, and people were coming in and stealing stuff and making pictures crooked.

I felt like I was being watched. I’d be going through things and a cold chill. I couldn’t sleep so I worked through the night. Passing headlights would set me on edge.

This was all mainly trauma from cleaning out the place I’d known and visited all my life. It was such a cheery, clean place when my grandma was alive. Now it seemed dingy, old and heavy with memories.

I ended up checking into a hotel to get some sleep and regroup a bit. I honestly thought I was going off my rocker. But when the hauling crew came in to take away everything else, the woman in charge remarked the house felt “heavy”.

Well, tell that story, R37! Come on! This is your big chance.

by Anonymousreply 38December 12, 2021 3:33 AM

SERIOUSLY, R37! I don’t believe in an afterlife or demons or any other religious claptrap, but I do believe in ghost, as so many people have encountered them. I don’t know what they ARE, but I know it’s a real phenomenon.

by Anonymousreply 39December 12, 2021 3:37 AM

Yeah, that pretty much my thinking on the subject, too, R39. I had so many bizarre experiences as a kid with a ouija board and candles. Terrifying shit, and it wasn’t my friends or me orchestrating it all.

by Anonymousreply 40December 12, 2021 3:42 AM

Yes, just last night. In a local restaurant that is known to be haunted. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched a blue light thingy that looked like a man, float through the air and sit down in a chair at a table right in front of me. When I looked at the chair full-on, nothing was there. It wasn’t frightening, and it happened in a few seconds even though it felt like a long time. True story. I didn’t say anything to my friends at my table. I’m not prone to seeing things and it would sound incredulous. I went ahead and ordered a bottle of red for dinner.

by Anonymousreply 41December 12, 2021 3:59 AM

R9, I love time slip stories! Can you recall any other details of your experience? The two English ladies described what they saw as appearing oddly two-dimensional, like a tapestry.

by Anonymousreply 42December 12, 2021 5:42 AM

Seen? No. Had one turn lights on and possibly switch on a radio to get my attention once.

by Anonymousreply 43December 12, 2021 5:56 AM

A g... g... g... ghost?

by Anonymousreply 44December 12, 2021 5:58 AM

omg, R40 - I had so many crazy ouija board experiences! My ex was a narcissist who claimed to be psychic, but he actually did have a gift. i figured he was the medium and i was the nutcase who (hopefully) amplified his energy:

1) we did a session in a friend’s house (we were in high school), and asked « is there anyone here? » (ooooh! 👻) the board - i kid you not - spelled out « cat », « [cat’s name] », and eventually « closet ». we opened the closet, and my friend’s cat was trapped in there. i’m certain the cat was happy to be away from such fuckery, as he bolted.

2) we tested the ouija board by writing stuff and sealing them in envelopes. if you’ve never used a ouija board, just know that the planchette can jerk around quite violently - so much so that your fingers can lose contact with it. anyway, « it » answered correctly when asked what all four of us had written and sealed in the envelopes.

3) i was with my bf at a house party with his junior A lacrosse team, bored out of my skull. i didn’t drink, but all those (hot! dumb!) jocks were drunk as hell. they wanted my bf to do his « psychic » stuff with the ouija board. i joined in, obviously, but was not impressed. the session didn’t go well. the planchette was stubborn and unresponsive, and it kept moving over to me and off the table, dropping into my lap. we took it as a sign to leave, and just as we were driving away, a couple of cop cars turned up to bust the party.

so, yeah - lame, i know, but it happened.

by Anonymousreply 46December 12, 2021 11:53 AM

I heard people with third eye are the only ones who can see ghosts. I have a cousin who believes she has a third eye and can see not just ghosts but otherworldly entities.

by Anonymousreply 47December 12, 2021 12:11 PM

My sister has seen ghosts, primarily my father's father, who died three months after I was born. She says he was a shadowy silhouette who used to stand at the foot of her bed and felt comforting. But she has also seen/felt dangerous-feeling figures.

I used to get spooked a lot, especially in the basement, and would suddenly have an instinct to dart upstairs. My sister says that was a ghost/spirit, while I feel like it was just my imagination. Either way, no harm ever came of it and so I've decided I would welcome an apparition. It seems they don't have any power to do any harm, so why not?

My apartment was built in the 1930s and it has two cabinets with glass-paned doors that have strange metal latches that insert into grooves but are not attached. They stay inserted for years at a time, and at other times, both of them pop out and fall onto the floor, and I will re-insert them and they'll pop out within hours or days. My sister would attribute that to a poltergeist, whereas to me it's just an interesting quirk.

by Anonymousreply 48December 12, 2021 12:57 PM

yes. I was doing a sale at a friend's house who was psychic. She had seen two adults and a child in the house she lived in. I was outside and needed to ask my friend a question. I saw her pass by the door on the inside of the house and yelled at her. She answered but was standing behind me outside.

I also have items in an antique store and every once in a while I will see shadows go by in my peripheral vision. The antique store is in a former funeral home. I was told it was haunted after I said I had seen shadows.

by Anonymousreply 49December 12, 2021 1:15 PM

I saw the figure of an old man dressed in an old style checked dressing gown, wearing the type of hat older men wore. He had a pool of light around him and was sitting slumped forward on this old iron daybed we had rescued from the backyard of the house. It was much later that I shared the experience with my then SO- whose response was ‘So you have seen him too?’ He also described what the guy was wearing, particularly the hat.

Turned out also, that the old guy was found dead on that particular bed.

by Anonymousreply 50December 12, 2021 1:28 PM

The day after my cat died 25 years ago, I was sitting up in my bed reading when I felt the end of the bed where my feet were sink just like they did when my cat jumped on the bed. I talked to the cat and never felt it after that again.

This thread is a DISAPPOINTMENT.

by Anonymousreply 53December 12, 2021 4:31 PM

R45– yeah, my experience was of the planchette moving way more erratically than I would’ve expected it to, and also in ways that seemed utterly impossible. For instance, we got it to lift up its front, pointed end—and we (my friend and I) absolutely were not physically able to do that ourselves, with our fingers lightly resting on the opposite, “fat” end of it. The thing isn’t even structured so that the pointed end *could* be lifted up just by pressing down on the fat end, even if that’s what we were attempting to do (and we weren’t attempting to do it).

Once I asked the “spirit” to extinguish a candle that was burning on the dining table where we were playing. It did it. Very slowly, like the flame was being extinguished by an invisible lid that had been placed over it. It wasn’t blown out; it was just slowly extinguished over the course of maybe 10 seconds. No reason for it to happen on its own. Candles don’t just “go out” like that when you ask them to. There wasn’t anything wrong with the wick or any part of the candle. I remember we re-lit it after that, and it stayed lit.

There were several things like that that happened. This was when we were in high school. There was a period of a few years where we were always playing with it.

I’m an atheist, I haven’t believed in a spirit world in a long time. I did at the time, however. I really can’t explain my weird experiences with the ouija, and I have never once heard an explanation that suffices. Skeptics try to debunk all this stuff and often fall quite short.

by Anonymousreply 65December 12, 2021 7:07 PM

I've never seen one, but like R63 I've sensed one before. My brother, my three cousins and I all would feel something when we passed the stairs leading to the attic at my grandmother's house. You had to pass those stairs to get to the only bathroom. You just felt like something was watching you. We all hated going to the bathroom at night, although you'd feel it during the day, too. All five of us still talk about it today.

I'm envious of those of you who have seen spirits. My ex said he could. My best friend's daughter definitely can. When she was young, she'd describe people she saw at other people's houses, and it always turned out she was describing the former deceased owner, or someone's grandfather or relative who had died at the house. Amazing to have that ability.

by Anonymousreply 66December 12, 2021 7:33 PM

i had a similar experience with a phantom cat on my bed. I was laying on my side in my bed, and felt the mattress pushing down, like my cat had jumped on it behind me. I reached behind my back to pet her, but there was no cat there.

A few years ago I saw a "mist" in my kitchen. It was eye level and was a cloudy, misty vapor concentrated in one spot. I wasn't cooking or doing anything in the kitchen. It disappeared after a few seconds, maybe a minute.

My ex-partner died several years ago. My partner and i were sitting and talking in the living room about his passing and when he said my ex's name the light above us turned on. The light switch was off and we never use the overhead light in the living room, ever.

Few years ago I was just sitting on the couch watching TV when I heard someone say my name clear as day like they were sitting on the couch next to me. It was like a loud whisper, not full volume. My SO was about 15 feet away in the kitchen cooking dinner and didn’t hear anything. It was just very odd. Never felt any presence in that apartment but in some pictures I took with a digital camera there were tons of orbs.

by Anonymousreply 77December 13, 2021 1:32 AM
A reminder that the FEELING a ghost is in your house is often the result of a gas leak.

It's not OFTEN that. It can be. The thing that does happen often, in older homes especially, is unshielded wiring. Humans are very sensitive to EMFs. Sometimes, when a room has high emfs because of the wiring, a person will often feel that they aren't alone or are being watched. It's not healthy and should be fixed immediately.

It's also the first thing anyone should think about or check.
Can ghosts injure or kill a living person? If they can throw things, slam doors, etc.- why couldn't one push you down the stairs or something?

Ghosts are people without bodies, usually. Someone who is angry at you or annoyed with you may slam a door, but they're not likely to try and kill you. Yes, ghosts can touch you, freak you out, etc. As for pushing you, sometimes they can do that too but it takes a lot of energy for them to interact with the physical world.

So the answer is yes, but they're not usually powerful enough to do anything. (And if something is trying to physically kill you, girl it may not be a ghost.)
Why did they deem this necessary? Weren’t there any adults there with the good sense to ignore you?

Ignoring the snarky side of this posts, places where they are often ghost sightings usually keep records of them especially if it's a historic place.
I had so many crazy ouija board experiences!

Just a general reminder to not use these things and if you do then have the good sense not to be rude, nasty, jokey, and when you're done FORCE it to say goodbye and tell it goodbye.

by Anonymousreply 78December 13, 2021 1:45 AM

Sorry, Val, I’m one of the ouija board posters from upthread (I know what happened, and I can’t explain it), but half of your post just sounds like kooky, superstitious nonsense unsupported by evidence. How do you know “it takes a lot of energy for them to interact with the physical world”?

Thanks for the info re: historical places keeping records of paranormal experiences.

by Anonymousreply 79December 13, 2021 1:52 AM

For the past week or so, we’ve been hearing occasional odd noises, benign sounds like someone dropping a magazine or plastic cup, in the living room while my husband and I are in the TV room next door. I’ve been joking about our ghost, but today when I walked into the TV room from the living room, my husband, seated there, said “did you bring one of the kids upstairs with you?” referring to the adorable toddlers whose family lives in the condo below ours. He thought he had seen a young child FOLLOWING ME into the room and assumed it was one of them, but I was alone.

If I hear one piping, mischievous giggle, we’re moving.

by Anonymousreply 80December 13, 2021 2:57 AM
but half of your post just sounds like kooky, superstitious nonsense unsupported by evidence.

R79, Half my post sounds like "kooky, superstitious nonsense" but you're using a plastic pointer on a piece of wood to [italic][bold]talk to dead people?[/italic][/bold]

And you want me to give you "evidence?"

I'm joking! I'm kidding! I get it, totally.

You can read about the harmful effects of EMFs on your own. You could probably type that in. There's tons of info on that.

I used to do "ghost hunting" in my youth. I responded a lot in this (linked) thread from a few years ago although it seems just like yesterday.

As for the rest of it: it's from meeting with people and talking about it, my own personal experiences, case studies I've read, investigations I went on but most of all logic.

If you think about all of the people who have died in the history of the world, assuming that some of them became ghosts and of course that some of those people were mentally unstable how many people have been murdered by a ghost?

An ouija board is just a toy until you start playing with it, with "intent." It's a divination device. Tea leaves, tarot cards, bones, stones, etc. It's not about the object but the energy you put into using it. It's not about the cardboard or paper or leaves, it's about your intentions. That's why there are so many screwy, jacked up stories about it from even people that say they have never seen anything or believe in anything but "this one time I used a ouija board with my friends and ..."

It's like lighting in a candle in the middle of a large dark room and asking aloud, "Hey, anyone want to talk? Anyone at all?" Sometimes, something says, "Okay!" but you don't have any control over what steps out of the dark.

by Anonymousreply 89May 23, 2022 6:16 AM

When my sister was about 6, she was really sick with asthma & was coughing a lot, so she & Dad slept in the living room on the couches. She woke up at like 4Am & swore she saw a bunch of tiny elves (4 inches tall or so) running around. I remember she said one had a tiny cannon! We all told her she had a vivid dream Or it was a hallucination due to her illness, but she insists to this day she saw what she saw, & doesn’t believe in the supernatural.

About 10 yrs later my bed started to shake a bit—not really shake, but I’d wake up to the feeling of someone pressing their hands on my mattress, like you would to test the firmness. The very first time I thought it was an earthquake that jolted me out of sleep, but it kept happening, even after I was fully awake.

I eventually told my mother, who is open to anything & never ever shut me down, until then. She told me not to talk about it & she didn’t want to hear another word about it!

I listened to an AM radio show (this was pre-internet) & followed the advice of a spiritualist who said to say out loud to stop it, they’re not welcome here, this is my house, get out. I did just that and, lo and behold, it never happened again.

I don't want to see a ghost, it's the sight that I fear most, I'd rather have a piece of toast and watch the evening news...

I do believe in ghosts, though I remain unsure what their exact nature is - not sure if they are the spirits/souls of the deceased, or some type of energy 'echo' of the person. I have some family members who have described ghost sightings (one of them independently corroborated by their very young daughter who asked 'Who's that old lady at the top of the stairs'?) so find it plausible even though I'm yet to experience myself.

Yes. My dad. He was a well respected football coach and after he passed, we spread some of his ashes on a major university's football field. We filmed it. And later while watching it, we noticed a huge ball of light speeding under the lights then an orb jetting back into the stadium. It was 7 degrees outside so it couldn't have been bugs or other flying critters. He was a humble man in life, but a show off in the afterlife. I miss him every day but watching that video comforts me.
