Has anyone ever heard of a kid being traumatized by being in the presence of a drag queen? The nutty rhetoric around this is nothing more than a lot of right-wing crazed Cassandras projecting their own "stuff" onto kids who have none of the prejudices they do. I'm willing to bet that kids look at a drag queen and see nothing more than someone in a costume.

There's nothing inherently "sexualized" about a drag queen, especially one who's just reading from a book - what flips out the MAGA world is a). the idea that these kids will grow up being accepting of people who are different (MAGA folks want these kids to grow up hating the same groups they do), and b). the insane idea that being around a drag queen is going to turn these kids into sexual deviants, as if LGBTQ is some kind of viral contagion. An remember - these kids go to these story readings because their parents brought them there.

Now if a drag queen is doing a sexually-themed performance, then that's obviously not suitable for children. And that's on the parents for bringing them to something like that. But let's face it - there's a ton of stuff on TV and in the movies (mostly heterosexual) that is quite sexualized and also not suitable for kids, but I don't hear the MAGA world freaking out about that. And you can bet these same kids are seeing at least some of it. But I suppose that kind of "grooming " is OK with the right.

As for the trans "groomers," whatever treatments are being given to minors are the result of consultations between parents, children, and medical professionals. There's no army of radical trans people swooping down, grabbing kids, and forcing them to take blockers or get surgery, which is what some of the rhetoric almost sounds like.

You may or may not agree with the decisions being made, but these kids are not yours. Personally, I'm not keen on puberty blockers and surgery for minors, as there could be long term effects we don't know about. But I'm not a trans kid and I'm not a parent, so I'm not an expert on this - nor are the banshees on the right. I just hope there's not a lot of buyer's remorse later on.

Finally, this is a resurgence of the tired old BS trope that letting kids around any LBGTQ people will infect their minds and cause them to grow up into some kind of deviant. It's as much about GLB as it is about the T - it's just easier to focus on the T as more people are not on board with it vs. G, L & B. Ultimately, it's not really that T is dragging us down- it's that the right is using the T as a cudgel to smear all of us in order to drag us all down.

We do not have the same body of research on their use on adolescents who are trans. They have been found to be safe in the first case. Now there is some evidence that in some trans patients being given the blockers at other ages that there are bone density problems. - but not in all. So the research has to be done in scientific ways, and already some of the doctors in the NY Times are article were altering the age at which they gave blockers and prescribing calcium and other things to promote bone health during the use of the blockers.

Note that the above mentions FDA approval. FDA approval requires extensive clinical data showing safety and efficacy. However, that is a different patient population than the trans group for whom the drugs are now sometimes prescribed.
