any hope?

by Anonymousreply 3November 9, 2022 3:54 PM

[quote] The fact is, Dems survived by too narrow a margin for anyone to be crowing this morning. Thank God they did, but Dems need to find the center again.

Totally disagree. The Dems have to win back the working class. To do that, it has to move more progressive.

Also, people are complaining about the Dems not having a strong message--that's because the Dems are too scared to push what it really should stand for--progressive policies. When polled, people love all these progressive policies.

Last night proved that America is pretty fine with Biden's work so far--and much of it was progressive. Dems have to build on that

by Anonymousreply 4November 9, 2022 3:55 PM

Where are we with Lake? Has she officially lost yet?

by Anonymousreply 5November 9, 2022 3:55 PM

Hopefully Poll Troll will explain the status of Lake/Hobbs and the Nevada Senate race. I’m hoping that the votes to be counted are leaning Democratic.

400,000 votes still to be counted in AZ, per CNN.

by Anonymousreply 11November 9, 2022 4:03 PM

I say this after every election, but it drives me nuts that we don't have a more efficient and effective way to count votes. I really wish we could seriously tackle voting reform.

by Anonymousreply 20November 9, 2022 4:09 PM

It's been said a several times, but the outstanding vote is mail in ballots from the Last Vegas area r15.

CCM is actually in the favorable position right now, most people are betting on her to win based on what we have seen.

by Anonymousreply 21November 9, 2022 4:09 PM

r15 Majority of the remaining votes that are yet to be counted are mail in ballots in Clark county which hugely favor Democrats. So she can still win depending on how big she wins those mail in ballots. She needs to win at least two-third of those left.

by Anonymousreply 22November 9, 2022 4:11 PM

Thank you, r21. There are 4 parts of this angst so I probably overlooked that bit of context "several times."

by Anonymousreply 23November 9, 2022 4:12 PM

Boebert’s loss is a “long shot”? Still?

by Anonymousreply 24November 9, 2022 4:15 PM

It's very hopeful that the outcome hasn't been a big advantage for repubs, and trump no longer the "king pin" he claims to be....but with close races still not settled, I'll put my blinders back on. I hope for the best now.

by Anonymousreply 25November 9, 2022 4:16 PM

Hate the fact Ron Johnson won. Madison and Milwaukee came in strong for Barnes, but it was the rural, suburban areas that gave Johnson that squeaker win.

[quote]America has become the shithole it is today because Dems have catered exclusively to "the center" and completely neglected and pushed the working poor to the Repugs.

That's about as wrong as you can get.

The working class left the Democrats back in the 1960s when they got mad that Dems supported Civil Rights. The Repugs took advantage of this with their Southern Strategy and wooed the racist Southerm Democrats, who fully switched to Republican by the 1980 Reagan election.

The only political party that does anything for the working class and working poor is the Democrats. The Republicans still win a lot of them over, though, because their entire focus is on identity politics. They set up scapegoats and various groups to hate and various rights that they claim hurt "real Americans," and run on a platform of ban abortions, ban gay marriage, ban affirmative action, ban trannies, ban birth control, blah blah, and it attracts the resentful low-information voters, even though the Republicans are not really working for them.

Of course, the Republicans do all this and then scream that it's the Democrats who are obsessed with identity politics.

You fell for it. That's fine, a lot of DLers fall for it. We have a shit ton of trolls who talk non-stop about identity politics in every thread, regardless of whether it's even on topic, yet say it's the Democrats who obsess over it.

by Anonymousreply 54November 9, 2022 5:14 PM

I think the runoff favors Warnock. I think some voters would vote a straight party ticket... and Repubs check Walker because he's the Repub. I think those voters might have "held their nose" as they did so. Not sure that they will be motivated to go out to vote just for him.

Especially if AZ and NV go Dem and the control of the Senate is already determined.

by Anonymousreply 55November 9, 2022 5:17 PM

r47, I figured that it was obvious that I was talking about the white working class when I was talking about the Southern Strategy.

by Anonymousreply 56November 9, 2022 5:24 PM

The Nevada guru Ralston breaks down the state of the race in Nevada. Basically, if there are indeed ~100k mail in votes to count and those break in favor of CCM as currently expected, she is still looking good. If there are fewer ballots than expected she needs to win them by a bigger margin.

We should found out later today how many ballots are left to count.

by Anonymousreply 57November 9, 2022 5:26 PM

R55 You can see that with his votes vs Kemp and Abrams. Kemp completely wiped the floor with Stacy and the third party didn't get nearly the votes in that race. Kemp is reasonably popular for some reason. Him not being on the ball also helps.

I'm thoroughly convinced that Trump once saw the Godfather, got head over heels with Brando's character and started to speak like him, because it personified the voice of the mob's boss and that's what he always wanted to be. by Anonymousreply 61November 9, 2022 6:13 PM

Murkowski should win because if it is ranked choice voting as the 9.5% who voted for the democrat candidate will overwhelmingly vote for her over the crazy Trump-endorsed one.

Sorry, R14 ^

by Anonymousreply 63November 9, 2022 6:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 64November 9, 2022 6:15 PM

I'm not Alaskan so I'm not sure, but no, there won't be a run-off: they will count the second rank choice from those whose candidate has been eliminated and add their second choice to the first two candidates ultimately. That should benefit Murkowski.

R70, a narcissist, all the more so a malignant narcissist, can not *EVER* lose. There was this guy on twitter when I was still on it, a clinical psychologist, who already insisted in 2018 that even if Trump would have to lose at the election, that it would not be an option for him to acknowledge his loss and to concede. And that's what we got two years later, and that is still the shit that we have today, because, again, someone with NPD cannot, ever, lose. And even if they lose and have to acknowledge it, it'll always be someone else's fault.

TL;DR someone with a personality disorder has no business being POTUS: look where it brought us.

by Anonymousreply 74November 9, 2022 7:00 PM

Trump enabler Kayleigh McEnany worries Trump will also sink the Georgia runoff:

"Every ounce of Republican energy, every last ounce needs to go into that Georgia race because it could potentially be what makes or breaks the Senate.

"I think he [Trump] needs to put it on pause. Absolutely. Look, he’ll make that decision. He’ll make his own decision. But if I’m advising any contender – DeSantis, Trump, whomever – no one announces 2024 until we get through December 6.”

R77, so will the other side, just as they came out in 2020. I do think Walker loses without Kemp heading the ticket.

by Anonymousreply 79November 9, 2022 7:19 PM

I'm not the poster you quoted, and I see your point, R77, but I think they are right because the issue is turnout.

Yes, many will show up to fight for the Senate. But expecting the same demographic who voted for an asshat like MTG to go out of their way to support a Black man is a stretch.

Add to that, a few (admittedly not many, but...some) who allowed him to be swept in the net of a straight GOP vote despite all of the evidence of abortion and violence and rank stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 80November 9, 2022 7:21 PM

R77 By my math, this scenario seems more likely IF the Republicans can take NV or AZ because then control of the senate will come down to the Warnock-Walker runoff. If the Democrats take both seats, there might be less repub enthusiasm because the dems will have retained a senate majority.

In any case, I think the run-off campaigning will be a slug-fest. My sense is Warnock still prevails if he targets Hispanic and Asian voters and takes a “gloves off” approach against Walker.

Re Walker / Warnoff runoff, will this prevent Shitler from making his glorious "announcement" next Tuesday? I tend to doubt it, based sheerly on Donnie's own MAGAlomaniac personality, but it SHOULD be delayed if he gives a shit about the Republican Party's chances in the next 2 years. I see now that Trump HAS to run for Prexy, he has to have this political hurly-burly to have any way to make money for the rest of his life. His finances are in peril, he's in DEEP debt, credit-wise, he's ~75 years old, and there is no way on earth for him to retire from grifting, he's got no way to make a living. Being President again is his ONLY hope of staving off God knows how many coming criminal prosecutions, millions of dollars in attorneys' fees (which will HAVE to be paid, up front, in advance, via retainers). He's FUCKED. He's got no choice but to hag [yes, hag] on for as long as anybody will pay a red nickle to listen to his idiotic bullshit. And his "magic" is clearly starting to stink bigtime, after last night. The next week is going to be interesting. Hershey doesn't want Donny coming over to GA to campaign for him. Both Parties are going to sink TENS of MILLIONS of Dollars into GA in the next 4 weeks. Biden will be here, Obama will come back, who knows who else?

RoJo: the dumbest guy in the Senate, re-elected. So dumb, that when on a junket to China, he was asked if there should be an official apology for the Rape of Nanking. RoJo said: "it depends: what was Ms. King wearing?"

by Anonymousreply 88November 9, 2022 7:48 PM

The Georgia runoff is tricky

I think Walker was helped by having Kemp on the ballot with him. How much will voters show up for Walker alone is a big question

Warnock outperformed Abrams significantly and he did win the 2020 runoff though he was not alone as Ossoff was also with him

having the libertarian on the ballot last night actually helped Warnock because it took away 80,000 potential votes for Walker. I bet there were some Kemp/libertarian voters

Democrats shouldn't even wait for the Arizona and Nevada results. They need to immediately coalesce around Warnock with all the money and attention possible. Obama will need to go back down there. I'm sure he's sick of doing all the heavy lifting but we need him to go to Georgia.

by Anonymousreply 89November 9, 2022 7:49 PM

[quote] the other thing worth thinking is whether those who voted for the Libertarian vote

Was there a sizable number or just enough to be a spoiler (I honestly don't know).

I think you're thinking that they wouldn't vote for Warnock on policy grounds. But also consider that they voted for a gay man. Would those principled Libertarians vote for Walker who has absolutely nothing other than culture wars--inclunding, but not limited to--"traditional marriage"? I don't know.

Most of the Libertarians I know are overeducated snobs who think they're too good for either party. How many of them are Jill Stein types who were casting protest votes?

I'm truly just spitballing here but in my gut something is telling me that it is going to work out fine.

by Anonymousreply 90November 9, 2022 7:49 PM

Honestly, Trump is dumber than I thought he was if he even entertains the possibility of actually running for President again. He would make so much more money fleecing his faithful.

by Anonymousreply 91November 9, 2022 7:50 PM

Democrats should run numerous abortion ads in Georgia and keep pointing out how Walker has 4 baby mommas, reportedly paid for 2 abortions but wants to force women to give birth

also link Walker with Trump. Biden should continue to stay out of Georgia

by Anonymousreply 92November 9, 2022 7:51 PM

Of course Dems are going to give lots of support to Warnock in his run off r89. Even if they win AZ and NV they want that Georgia seat bad. That would mean they could lose Manchin in a vote and still have enough votes.

by Anonymousreply 93November 9, 2022 7:53 PM

I doubt Obama minds doing the heavy lifting in Georgia to stump for Warnock. He's likely very invested in the success of Biden's presidency as an extension of his own legacy and maintaining control of the Senate would be a boon for Biden administration.

by Anonymousreply 94November 9, 2022 7:53 PM

80,000 morons voted Libertarian in Ga. YES, enough to "make a difference." Decisive and then some, considering the closeness of these races in the past 2 years.

by Anonymousreply 95November 9, 2022 7:53 PM

R90... I worried the libertarians were more likely to go Republican... your view of them is gentler than mine.... I see them as the craziest level of Republican... so crazy even Republican isn't Yankee Doodle founding fathers don't tread on me enough for them. But better that than a Democrat. Hopefully there will be a lot of exhaustion on the right.

by Anonymousreply 96November 9, 2022 7:53 PM

I remember Libertarians being were way more vicious and hateful about gay marriage back in the early 2000s, than any Republican I encountered.

by Anonymousreply 97November 9, 2022 7:55 PM

I live in GA and know some of these Libertarians. They are educated and know full well what kind of knuckle-dragging idiot Walker is. I expect most of them would be OK with voting for Warnock, but the whole Libertarian posture, considering the political state of this country ever since Dubya, just seems so archly coy, pretentious, and unrealistic as to be beyond belief.

by Anonymousreply 98November 9, 2022 7:57 PM

R98, what are they more likely to do: vote Warnock, vote Walker or just not vote at all?

by Anonymousreply 99November 9, 2022 7:58 PM

^ The ones I know probably DID vote for Warnock, they tend to do the Libertarian thing for President, and vote more sensibly in local matters. Walker has nothing to recommend him EXCEPT that he is Republican and a big former football hero. Otherwise, he's a fool, a hypocrite, and a liar. He clearly supports abortion, just not out in the open... The press for this vote will be mammoth. I ordered an absentee ballot just a couple of hours ago, going to be out of town on 12/6. The last time this happened, for Warnock and Ossoff, it was unbelievable how much money was spent, and this time will be no different. If someone can really mobiilze the black voters to go out and vote for Warnock, I think he'll win. Walker's well-documented hypocrisy re abortion and parental responsibility are the things the Dems can use against him, and they should have it out the gate by tomorrow morning. No way to say for sure how it will go. At least we know the votes will be counted about four times before the result is certified...

by Anonymousreply 100November 9, 2022 8:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 108November 9, 2022 8:15 PM

To the posters in the last thread regarding the transing of gay children and the related trampling of women's rights:

There are only so many trans people, but more than half the population is directly affected by the right wing assault on reproductive rights. The right wing co-opting issues of women's safety is clearly cynical. World War T was a terrible mistake, but as Gendertrender's Gallus Mag said a while back, it will eventually collapse under the weight of its own craziness.

The problem is, as Gallus noted, that the entire movement is funded by a handful of billionaires like Pritzker. Democrats aren't nearly as corrupt as Republicans, but also have a hard time saying no to filthy lucre. Eventually the pile of dead and mangled bodies will get too large to ignore and Pritzker's money won't be able to put the crazy train back on the tracks.

Getting back to the election: MAGA is doomed because socons are too selfish to support the safety net and strong wages necessary for the functioning society they say they want. "Keep your socialist hands off my Medicare" is the extent of their vision. It's nothing but fuck-you-me-first grifters all the way down.

In the meantime, I'm in Michigan and savoring the Democratic victory. Well done to Big Gretch, and well done to us.

I used to think this way but I’ve come around. Libertarians challenge the status quo and in time they’ll grow (in places like Oregon they already have) so that they force both parties to adopt more mainstream views if they want to win. I look at them as check against the hyper partisan politics that is plaguing our country these days.

[quote]WHY is Arizona often so slow?

Hundreds of thousands of mailed, walked in and early ballots that couldn't be counted until after the polls closed.

by Anonymousreply 143November 9, 2022 9:23 PM

Arizona and Nevada have a high percentage of vote-by-mail, and by law the mail ballots cannot be processed until after the polls close on Election Day. So starting last night the poll workers have to (1) verify signatures on the envelopes, (2) open the envelopes, (3) unfold and flatten the ballots, (4) stack the ballots, and then (5) run them through the tabulators. Takes a lot of time. Other states allow all the steps up to tabulation to be done prior to Election Day.

by Anonymousreply 144November 9, 2022 9:24 PM

I just read in the Reno paper that Washoe County will upload a batch of ballots either later today or tomorrow morning. The mail ins are really slowing things down, but that's a good thing IMO.

I was polled and said wrong track because of the rise of authoritarian pig people on the Republican side. I thought a red wave was coming.

Today I have a different answer to that question. Democracy is safe for a few years. Now we're on the right track again.

But pundits never seem to think of that. It's always just people angry at Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 152November 9, 2022 9:40 PM

The pollster who called me asked right track/wrong track. I asked if they were asking if I was happy with Democrats. He said no, this is just your general opinion. I gave it. I asked if they were asking for information on why people were answering the question the way they were. He wasn't.

Kornacki just said they're expecting a big chunk of AZ ballots around 8pm Eastern tonight - that's ballots from Friday through Monday.

After that, what's outstanding (it was a larger number, double the Fri-Mon or more) are same-day mail ballots that people physically brought to the polling stations on election day. He said it's not clear which candidate that same day mail ballots will favor.

I don't believe anyone selling the notion that many libertarians are educated, above-it-all types with progressive values. It is quite literally the most racist and misogynistic platform in this country and anyone not aware is either willfully ignorant or outright lying about their true intentions.

"In May, the party was taken over at its national convention by the so-called Mises Caucus, a far-right group, some of whose members have been associated with racist and antisemitic ideas. The caucus is named after the libertarian economist Ludwig von Mises, whose philosophy was pretty crude (as I explained in the book) but who firmly condemned racism.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year, the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire tweeted (in a later deleted post) that “America isn’t in debt to black people. If anything it’s the other way around.” Caucus members have called for violent repression of antifa and Black Lives Matter protesters. The new leadership’s first and most prominent decision was to remove from the party platform language declaring, “We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant.”

"White Democrats will desert their party in droves the minute it becomes a black party.”

Kevin Phillips, The Emerging Republican Majority, 1969

Thirty years ago, archconservative Rick Perry was a Democrat and liberal icon Elizabeth Warren was a Republican. Back then there were a few Republican Congressmen and Senators from Southern states, but state and local politics in the South was still dominated by Democrats. By 2014 that had changed entirely as the last of the Deep South states completed their transition from single-party Democratic rule to single party rule under Republicans. The flight of the Dixiecrats was complete.

Reasons for the switch are not so hard to understand. Legend has it that President Johnson, after signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, mourned “we’ve lost the South for a generation.” That quote might be apocryphal, but it accurately reflects contemporary opinion. Fiery segregationist George Wallace would carry five Southern states in his third party run for President in 1968. Southern anger over the Democratic Party’s embrace of civil rights reforms was no secret and no surprise.

This election has been one bit of great news after another.

Total control in MI and MN. Flipping PA senate? Or House?

Flipped Govs, state leges, House and Senate seats. Turned back a midterm that should have been on par with Clinton and Obama’s shellacking. Yet, although slim, Democrats have a chance to get 218 in the House for a hold and hold the Senate. None of this should have been remotely possible even if Biden and Democrats were fairly popular since America is so GD contrarian and loves to hand midterms to the party out of power.

Colorado is very much blue, for the most part.

But, there are pockets of deep red areas. Dumbfuck Boebert is in one of those areas It’s a shame too, as Grand Junction is such a cute little town.

by Anonymousreply 215November 9, 2022 11:28 PM

Boebert’s District

Not on anyone radar nationally. It is a small district, no good local newspaper. Controlled by NRA and is deep red.

by Anonymousreply 223November 9, 2022 11:38 PM

R221, per CNN.

It's accurate. GOP won lost only PA that's why they're at 49 instead of 50.

What's outstanding is 3 current Dem seats AZ, GA, NV. If Dems take all, they'll be at 51 because of the PA pickup.

by Anonymousreply 224November 9, 2022 11:39 PM

No such thing. All districts are essentially equal in population.

Ron D does not and will not play well outside the swamp fever of FL. He is short, fat, whiny, doesn’t have nearly the charisma of trump, and is not as effective a speaker as trump. For maga it’s trump or bust. They worship him. They implode without him.

by Anonymousreply 232November 9, 2022 11:48 PM

They are really trying to pump him up, but yes, he does have that real charisma deficit. There were various factors that led to Trump in 2016, some of them treasonous of course, but being fun to watch was definitely part of it. Ron DeSantis is just sort of dreary to watch, a very Nixonian charm.

by Anonymousreply 233November 9, 2022 11:49 PM

R297, I wish I knew. 😕 They are both going to be very tight. CCM is underperforming Biden's 2020 results in NV, so she has to hope that there are enough mail-in ballots left in Clark & Washoe to put her over the top. Follow Jon Ralston for the best analysis.

Illinois Supreme Court (7 justices) is set to be:

3 white women (including the Chief Justice, all Democrats) 2 black women (one is a Republican, one Dem) 1 black man (Dem) 1 white man (Republican)

The two black women were named by their respective successors, both retiring, to complete their terms (this is very common). They'll face reelection in 2-4 years (an IL Supreme Court term is 10 years)

So, the redistricting of judicial districts "worked" as the Dems hoped.

3 Black justices are historic - there's never even been two before until two months ago. And the three that will all be on the bench at the same time are only the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th black justices ever.

5 women - that has to easily be the most at one time.

The black man took office in 2018 (and has since won reelection) and at that time he was the junior most justice of the seven. Now he's the second most senior justice - which is nuts. Retirements, retention votes, elections have led to a lot of turnover in the past few years.

[quote]Can someone explain to me why the person who gets the most votes doesn't just win in GA?

State statute says that if a candidate doesn't get a majority of votes, they have to do a runoff.

by Anonymousreply 331November 10, 2022 2:07 AM

GA has runoffs for any election wherein no one gets a majority. So does Louisiana

by Anonymousreply 332November 10, 2022 2:07 AM

Because GA law requires 50%+1

by Anonymousreply 333November 10, 2022 2:07 AM

Have to get over 50%. If not, goes into run off election.

About Georgia election rules:

Didn't both Ossoff & Warnock lose in the '20 general vote?

by Anonymousreply 335November 10, 2022 2:08 AM

Georgia and Louisiana are the only two states that require general election candidates to get over 50% of votes to win an election and avoid a run off. It's incredibly dumb.

Like many things in America it has its origin in trying to disenfranchise black voters.

by Anonymousreply 336November 10, 2022 2:11 AM

R330, each state has a lot of freedom with respect to how it conducts elections, even federal ones. That's why there are no uniform rules concerning early voting or the use of drop boxes, for example. So some states, like Georgia have the 50% + 1 law.

by Anonymousreply 341November 10, 2022 2:18 AM

The run off election will most likely benefit warnock. Warnock is a Christian and a civil right advocate. He is linked to Martin Luther King jr church. The Democratic Party begged him to run for office. This is a good thing if we can raise the money.

Be sure to donate to Warnock’s campaign, if you are able too.

What do you all think it will take to turn florida and Texas blue?

If what happened in Uvalde did help help flip Texas, what will?

by Anonymousreply 361November 10, 2022 2:51 AM

I’m in Michigan and was surprised about flipping both house and senate. The gerrymandering was so bad for so long. We had districts redrawn with a new commission but didn’t think this would happen. I thought maybe one of them would flip. The republicans must be losing their minds here. I think the abortion issue brought a lot of people out of the woodwork. The DeVos stranglehold in Michigan is over!

by Anonymousreply 362November 10, 2022 2:52 AM

[r361] I would say the answer doesn’t include DL faves Beto and Stacey. They both keep losing while others in their state win.

by Anonymousreply 363November 10, 2022 2:53 AM

Too many low information voters think both parties are normal, divided govt works, and seem to think splitting their votes makes them rational. They don’t grasp what is at stake. I know because I have them in my family. They won’t lose their rights, so they think, but don’t care about me losing mine.

R361 Texas has such low voter turnout. 12 million registered Texans didn’t vote. Billionaires pump tons of money into the state. For Democrats to turn it Blue, which I think it is there if enough registered voters vote, it would require a substantial amount of money which is difficult when most billionaires want republicans in control.

by Anonymousreply 364November 10, 2022 2:54 AM

Honest, and probably stupid question, does it really make a difference if Dems control Congress if the Supreme Court is legislating from the bench?

by Anonymousreply 365November 10, 2022 2:56 AM

[quote]Assembly: Republican 64 - Democratic 35

Everyone needs to look really closely at those numbers to understand how the Repugs cheating through gerrymandering goes against every single ideal of democratic voting in a representative government.

[quote]What do you all think it will take to turn florida and Texas blue?

From everything I've heard the Democratic Party in Florida is a total mess. Dysfunctional, poorly organized and run by idiots. I think it's going to take a strong leader at the DNC and some boots on the ground work to the party functioning again. Once you have a functioning party to build a strong grassroots situation maybe they will be able to turn things around.

I don't understand what's happening with Ohio.

The Texas thing was that democrats pinned too much hope on Hispanics. Truth is Hispanics are very conservative and very Catholic and if democrats want them, they are going to have find candidates who speak to them.

by Anonymousreply 369November 10, 2022 3:00 AM

I pulled the current numbers in each county of CO-03 and calculated the undervote. Using this we projected the *upper bound* of how many remaining cong. votes there are.

There was chatter earlier in the year of Liz Cheney being the speaker if the Republican majority was very narrow. That the entire Democratic caucus would agree to vote for her & get the requisite handful of Republicans to vote for her, too. If that’s too much of a stretch, maybe a sitting moderate Republican (there has be some remaining) could be the choice Democrats could coalesce around.

R302, in Arizona all the mail in ballots that came in on election day whether by mail or turned in in person have to be verified. The signatures have to be compared to the one on record. Also, they have to check that the voter did not also vote at a polling place. Apparently, there were thousands of late ballots turned in during this election. Op-ed piece from LA Times sums things up nicely.

No, the predicted Red Wave didn't happen, largely because of Donald Trump and his fan base that ran some of the worse candidates in history. State, local and Congress dodged a bullet there, but it may be a bit early to break out the champagne.

One thing to look at is how close many races were, with democrats often winning by small margins. Turning it around had many of those GOP candidates not embraced the Orange Idiot and rest of that hot mess they might have won. New York State governor race was closer than many expected and results are showing some shifts in state's political landscape.

Democrats cannot count on DT (and or his supporters and adherents) being the nominee in 2024 thus giving a repeat performance.

[quote]No, the predicted Red Wave didn't happen, largely because of Donald Trump and his fan base that ran some of the worse candidates in history.

"Worst."

Repugs ran the kind of people they usually run in state races, it's just that people generally didn't pay attention to state races or midterms the way they have been for the last few years, so they didn't realize that there were lots of Palins and Duke Cunninghams and such until they made it to the national level. Also, for the Trumpster demographic, saying the crazy and racist parts out loud gets you votes. Until recently those same kinds of politicians just used dog whistles and kept their nastier remarks to local speeches and town halls, which worked back in the pre-social media days.

This wasn't a landslide it was a overall good luck with narrow margins of victory - it is slightly amazing a slightly larger number of Americans said enough than said bring on Republicans. The question now what Democrats do with the opportunity to shore up their position. So many DLers seem to think it's a green light to AOCland.

The bottom seems to be falling out for Trump, which will be great because of the internal strife it will cause. The Lieutenant Governor of GA was on CNN this morning and his comments about Trump were brutal. Now, you'd expect that out of Georgia given the last two or so years, but that he said it, so forcefully, said a lot about where the Republicans are going and it's kinda looking like civil war, which will be harmful to them in terms of alienating their base and hugely entertaining to watch.

But what I also take away from this exceptionally AWG is perhaps a desire to just return to boring. The district quite possibly voted against have the drama of having a gay, senior leadership D as their rep. [quote] The person on my timeline who tweeted this did so to evidence that "the party" is moving away from tRump.

"The party," yes, but the establishment never was on board. As long as Trump has the support of 30% of his MAGAt base, he's good. And the results of this election will only encourage more challengers, guaranteeing Trump nom in a crowded field.

by Anonymousreply 456November 10, 2022 1:22 PM

In CA, there are 15 House races still undecided, if I'm counting right. Looks like 8 are almost certainly Dem, 4 almost certainly Repug, and 3 too close to call right now, at 85% in.

In AZ, three, two are too close to call, with one almost certainly Dem.

In CO, 8th has gone to Caraveo (D) and 3rd still up in the air.

CT has one, too close to call.

IL one, probably Dem.

Iowa one, too close to call.

Maine one, probably Dem.

Maryland one, probably Rep.

Montana, probably Rep.

NV three, two almost certainly Dem, third too close to call.

NY one still too close to call.

OR two, both too close to call.

WA two, both Dems leading by quite a bit.

So by my calculations that's 33 still left, is that right? Per the CNN website there should be 35 left so I guess I'm missing two. Irritating.

Dems need 27 of the 35 left to control the House. It's doable but I don't know how likely it is.

Russia hacked voter registration websites in all 50 states. The Mueller report detailed several hacks where the GRU extracted all voter data from databases.

I want to know why so many Republicans were crowing about picking up 40 seats in the House. I know a lot of garbage polls came out in order to make noise in the last few weeks, but surely their internals couldn’t have been that off.

But they even planned for a big victory party that ended up not happening.

by Anonymousreply 491November 10, 2022 5:14 PM

I think something shifted more than once. Dems had momentum for awhile there, then sentiment seemed to shift toward the Repubs. I also think the one thing the pollsters can never tell us is what turn out will actually be. It may be that they polls accurately reflected sentiment at the time of polling, but say nothing about whether people will vote or how they'll vote.

On CNN this morning Paul Begala argued there used to be two truths in politics: it's either a change election or a stay the course election. He contended, as a good Democrat, a third option emerged: the enough election - that people may have been pissed off with Democrats but were so tired of Republican madness they held their noses. So Begala seemed to contend some part of the Democrats showing was not an endorsement of them.

by Anonymousreply 492November 10, 2022 5:18 PM

The poll and pundits didn't factor in the youth vote. They came out strong and a lot of it was young women voting on abortion issues. I got a poll call on my cell which I only answered because I thought I knew the number. I doubt many kids answered those calls or got them in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 493November 10, 2022 5:21 PM

[quote]I want to know why so many Republicans were crowing about picking up 40 seats in the House. I know a lot of garbage polls came out in order to make noise in the last few weeks, but surely their internals couldn’t have been that off.

The few that were released were off. Polling goes out the window in high turnout elections and it looks like GenZ turned out in numbers that weren’t accounted for in the polling.

by Anonymousreply 494November 10, 2022 5:24 PM

We don't know if anything ever shifted. The media just kept telling us it was shifting towards the Republicans because Republicans said everyone forgot about abortion and only cared about crime (which is not actually suddenly a major problem, or not anymore than usual), the border (again, not a real issue) and inflation. If you haven't noticed the media follows Republican talking points the majority of the time.

Also young people aren't answering the phone to get polled.

by Anonymousreply 495November 10, 2022 5:27 PM

Legacy pollsters actually weren't horribly this election. What really complicated things was right wing pollsters like Trafalgar were releasing polls that ended up being complete bullshit.

Wasn't there proof of hacking, some of which was in the Mueller Report itself? I seem to recall that they knew machines were hacked but they couldn't prove votes were changed...

Because of course they would just hack to see if they could and not actually do anything once they found out they could.

Is that really it, r495, about young people not answering the phone, or is that just old lore that has now been incorporated into polling mythology? by Anonymousreply 501November 10, 2022 5:37 PM

R500, I don’t think it’s young people not answering their phone. If you look at the granular details of the polls it gives how many people are surveyed in each demographic and they do have a sizable sample group of young folks responding. I think where the issue comes in is when they took the sample and applied it to what they think voter turnout will look like they underestimated the youth vote.

[quote]I can’t find which thread I posted this in, but I am psychic and knew that there was never going to be a “red wave.” My prediction at the time was that we would retain both chambers of Congress and win races that were not even being discussed as gettable.

The (young) Liberals showed up.

by Anonymousreply 527November 10, 2022 6:24 PM

As much as I can't stand DeSantis, I'll take him any day over Trump. Even just the short clip of the orange menace talking and doing those stupid hand movements like he's playing an accordion made me want to hurl. The guy is like a cockroach that wont go away.

by Anonymousreply 528November 10, 2022 6:24 PM

does boebert race gets runoff if it is close?

it is certainly within 1% margin

what is colorado law on this kind of race?

by Anonymousreply 529November 10, 2022 6:33 PM

R529, Colorado law requires an automatic recount when the split is less than one-half of 1%. So right now seems likely but it all hangs on the actual final spread. Even half a percent difference would preserve the outcome in theory (subject to the presumable lawsuits to force a recount.)

by Anonymousreply 530November 10, 2022 6:38 PM

Considering how mentally unstable Boebert and Lake are I'm sure there will be several recounts if either of them lose.

by Anonymousreply 531November 10, 2022 6:39 PM

Senate is looking like dem control. House is still 50/50, leaning republican. Nothing decided yet.

by Anonymousreply 540November 10, 2022 7:28 PM

Kari Lake is a complete nut job. Let her spin out with her crazy conspiracies theories while she loses.

by Anonymousreply 541November 10, 2022 7:31 PM

Kari Lake is a total psycho. The idea of her doing a “Mommie Dearest” style rose bushes scene back in Arizona is very satisfying right now.

by Anonymousreply 542November 10, 2022 7:31 PM

Also, r530, I'd like to add that either candidate can request a recount even if the final margin is .6% or above, as long as their campaign fully funds it. Boebert's corrupt bosom buddy Tina Peters (former Mesa County clerk) did so following the Republican primary for CO SoS. She gained 13 votes, and the recount cost her campaign $137,000+.

R549, yes, Kelly is now up by almost 100,000 votes with 76% of the vote in.

Approx 15,000 votes left in district 3 / Colorado

by Anonymousreply 571November 10, 2022 10:04 PM

Statistically there are a lot more youngsters and a lot less boomers who will vote in 2024. Also disproportionately MAGAts died in larger numbers than Democrats from covid. So this all works very well in 2024!

by Anonymousreply 572November 10, 2022 10:06 PM

Frisch can still do it - there are thousands of votes that favor him yet to be counted. I wouldn't call it just yet.

I'm delighted by the schadenfreude of Kevin McCarthy's speakership at risk, but worried by the worsened paralysis that might accompany his replacement.

by Anonymousreply 583November 11, 2022 12:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 584November 11, 2022 12:20 AM

Arizona election is giving me anxiety. Why are they delaying results till Monday? I hope Lake fails . But I want no cheating, that’s not democracy

by Anonymousreply 585November 11, 2022 12:20 AM

R583 I'm not completely sure about the process, but votes are votes eventually. I think Pelosi/Biden could cut a sneaky deal... let the Freedom Caucus vote for Jim Jordan, and invite other Repubs... WITH ENOUGH DEMS...to vote for McCarthy. McCarthy is a lethal scum, but he is not true MAGA, he just wants power and status.

by Anonymousreply 586November 11, 2022 12:22 AM

Ohio here...On my drive home tonite I listened to the local GOP Loony Toon radio station....Kari Lake was their guest and---NO JOKE---she was spouting all kinds of Election Crazy...She said when HER voters went to the polls the Polling Places ran out of ink to print out ballots for HER voters...She was also making veiled threats--->>SHE has eyes everywhere...SHE is watching...SHE is going to "transform the election process" (whatever the fuck that means)....

by Anonymousreply 587November 11, 2022 12:23 AM

Kari Lake is a raving lunatic.

by Anonymousreply 588November 11, 2022 12:25 AM

R586, I've been imagining the exact same scenario! It seemed too far fetched in my head but I was glad to see it.

by Anonymousreply 589November 11, 2022 12:26 AM

Don't sugarcoat it, r588.

by Anonymousreply 590November 11, 2022 12:27 AM

R588 = She was absolutely insane on the radio today..You don't even know how crazy she was. Not a single shred of proof but she is running around making up crazy shit. SHE is going to find out WHY the Polling Places run out of INK!!...SHE promised to get to the bottom of it...And the MAGA hosts were thanking her for being a fighter!!...Insane!!....

by Anonymousreply 591November 11, 2022 12:30 AM

Power sharing would be a brilliant move, but McCarthy is not gutsy enough to do it. There is an opportunity to tackle immigration, climate change, and the debt with bipartisanship. Both party’s extremes are weakened right now. Americans are tired of inaction.

It will NEVER happen.

by Anonymousreply 592November 11, 2022 12:32 AM

I think McCarthy is such a hungry whore and empty suit I'd offer him his dream with this poison:

no impeachment, no Hunter, and you give the Magatards their recall ability... but if they try to yank you, we'll give you the votes to survive. And if you fuck us on your agreement in any way, we'll let you twist in the wind.

Of course it can't happen, it's too House of Cards... but it could happen based on the empty shit that is Kevin McCarthy. He's rapidly running out of options. I love it.

by Anonymousreply 593November 11, 2022 12:35 AM

I loved the shots of the near-empty Republican mid-terms celebration party on Election Night.

[quote]Who is this Marsh woman?

I don't know, but I appreciate her enthusiasm.

by Anonymousreply 597November 11, 2022 1:02 AM

A small R majority in the House could actually be GOOD for 2024. McCarthy won't get SHIT done. He will be unable to corral a big tent that has moderates/Trump rear-viewers and MAGAts together. We will see sensible legislation pass when the R moderates caucus with Dems while the crazies hold embarrassing, wasteful, and meaningless meetings that will only highlight the difference between workable gov't and Trump's fascistic clown-show.

Hell, just the voting for House Speaker will be a shitshow and no guarantee for McCarthy. The R in-fighting would grow more public, on-going and sort of glorious to see.
