I can’t believe the nuttery on Fux Evtertainment. Too a peek and Jesse Waters is talking about the RePigs TUESDAY’s lead in votes. Right now, they have Walker and Cruz gloating over his Tuesday returns. They are sick!

“The radical, extreme Democrats are traitors!”. There’s this glassy-eyed grin on Water’s face like he smoked a giant joint. Weird.

R3 Yep, I've been looking at right wing media (I do periodically anyway, for a bunch of productive reasons). I expected, given their pattern and skill at gaslighting their audiences and lying even as facts are in front of them, to see lots acknowledgement that this was a serious loss for Repubs. I've seen the hints that Murdoch is done with Trump (and seeing the Lt Gov of Virginia say "I will not support Trump in 2024") - but "trump is done!!" has seemed to be the story so many times with nothing actually changing, I assumed I see the same lie-crafting.
But their big story really is, "why did we fail, is it Trump?" NOT - the Dems stole the election.
It's been refreshing, so far anyway.

*NEVADA UPDATE*
Cortez Masto has just shaved another few thousand off Laxalt's lead. His lead is now down to 12,671.

Has anyone heard anymore about the Nevada Senate race? It’s so quiet… I know there’s optimism there, but I hate that nothing has dropped at all. We need that race even more than we need Hobbs in Arizona—although of course, I want Hobbs to beat cray cray Kari.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 11, 2022 1:15 AM |
Omg r10, some ESP going on there, we posted at the same time. Is there optimism there? How many votes are outstanding? I follow Jon Ralston but I really don’t have a good overall picture.

R11/R12, NV is going to be close, but CCM appears to have gotten the percentage she needed out of this latest batch. (61%). If she can keep getting that percentage she could pull ahead.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 11, 2022 1:22 AM |
R13
Boebert looks like she'll win, but we'll know soon either way
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 11, 2022 1:23 AM |
The NV Senate race has gotten so confusing. Jon Ralston tweeted:
[quote] There are an estimated 14-15,000 votes left in the rurals, which will give Laxalt a boost in the Senate race of anywhere from 3-5,000 votes, depending on margins.
[quote] That would mean CCM needs to get 60% or so of urban ballots. 55% might be enough.
But there's confusion about how many urban ballots are left. Also the 14-15k left from rurals sounds like a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 11, 2022 1:24 AM |
Boebert (maga R) and Frisk (Dem and sane) us house race most likely goes into recount, according to local news there.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 11, 2022 1:25 AM |
R17 and Poll Troll, that was going to be my question—do we even know what’s outstanding and where it’s from?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 11, 2022 1:27 AM |
CNN says CCM needs 53-56% of the uncounted vote to break in her favor
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 11, 2022 1:30 AM |
I do not think these amateur poll statistics people on social media have valid or insider information.
Most likely, these close races go into a recount process.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 11, 2022 1:32 AM |
My guess: Dems will win Nevada. Repubs will win Arizona. Dems will win Georgia.
Wonder if I'm far off? This is just my gut feeling.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 11, 2022 1:33 AM |
Dems are more likely to win AZ Senate seat. NV is a nailbiter.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 11, 2022 1:34 AM |
r22, you are correct as to Nevada.
The Big Red Mirage will give way to the Big Blue Apparition.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 11, 2022 1:35 AM |
CNN just counted a relatively small batch of votes from Clark County (Vegas area) breaking upwards of 61% for CCM. King says if the rest is like that, good news for CCM.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 11, 2022 1:38 AM |
[quote] But there's confusion about how many urban ballots are left. Also the 14-15k left from rurals sounds like a lot.
NV is confusing because it sends a mail-in ballot to every registered voter and it has to be postmarked election day but will be counted if it is received by 11/11. I imagine it has received all ballots by now but NV cannot confirm total ballot count until 11/12.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 11, 2022 1:39 AM |
R19 It's getting hard deciphering but my summary is...urbans are Washoe and Clark. Washoe probably has 20k left. Clark probably 76k left.
Sean Golonka re: Washoe:
[quote] Update on Washoe uncounted mail ballots: Through Nov. 9, the county has received 102.5k mail ballots, of which 60.8k have been tabulated and reported.
[quote] That is about 40k uncounted ballots, but not all will yield results. Of those, we should expect results from 20k in coming days.
Jon Ralston re: Clark:
[quote] This, from @JohnRSamuelsen, who has been unerring in his predictions of what is left to be reported because he has been tracking the mail file at Clark County, makes the most sense:
[quote] 50K Clark ballots uncounted
[quote] 26K counted and should be reported tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 11, 2022 1:39 AM |
R22 I am not a sunshine pumper at all, but I think the numbers look like Dem senate victories in both AZ and NV. GA, not being determinative, I can't think how turnout would then be affected. If NV goes Repub, I think Dems win GA... just too much incentive, and the higher the turnout the more advantageous for Warnock.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 11, 2022 1:39 AM |
Why is Lexalt claiming he has a shot? Is he full of shit? I don't know who to trust, Ralston or him? Both are so sure they're right. I obviously hope Dems win but I'm scared.

R32 It's sort of curious no one has called it for Kelly yet. Just doesn't seem to be any scenario he'd lose that lead. "They" called it for Ron Johnson when it seemed much closer, and "uncounted" geography seemed to favor Barnes.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 11, 2022 1:48 AM |
Lol R33. But there's an Alaska intrigue because of rank choice voting.

Senate is important for judges. Republican having the house and being completely dysfunctional for 2 years leading into 2024 wouldn't be the worst thing in the world anyway if dems don't get the house. Looking forward to the republican speaker trying to wrangle that caucus if nothing else
As for as Republicans go Murkowski isn't the worst, so hope she pulls it off. She should.

#44, Libertarians are emo Republicans. Without a candidate, those voters would have voted for Walker- and he'd already be the winner.
And then there were the Georgians who just voted for the white guy.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 11, 2022 2:04 AM |
The Libertarian was getting these votes because emo Republicans didn't want to vote for Walker.
The hope is they won't be voting in the runoff because there's no Kemp etc. on the ballot.

I was thinking the "Dems could still control the House!!" was absolutely insane optimism, but I see both the NYT and CBS project the final count for Repubs at 220 or 221. This was really close.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 11, 2022 2:12 AM |
for fuck's sake. Apparently Arizona has around 290,000 ballots left to count and we might only get 60,000 per day! That's 4-5 days more of this shit.

Per Steve K, the latest vote dump from Maricopa gives Kelly an additional 10,000+ to his lead and 7,000+ to Hobbs' lead.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 11, 2022 2:17 AM |
But, r58, they will show up as brackets for r50...as you know.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 11, 2022 2:20 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 11, 2022 2:23 AM |
R59, Kornacki also said there was a tranche of some 200,000 votes that are thought to be pro-GOP. And while that likely won’t be enough to overcome Kelly’s lead it could wipe out Hobbs’s more narrow lead.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 11, 2022 2:24 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 11, 2022 2:26 AM |
If you need another indicator of how badly the Republicans ultimately did, it does not appear that the Democrats lost control of a single state legislative house that they controlled going in, and in fact, picked up control in Michigan and Minnesota.
That hasn't happened to a party in power since FDR's first midterm, almost 90 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 11, 2022 2:29 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 11, 2022 2:45 AM |
R71 Well, quite. You should believe Ralston over Laxalt. He is not rooting for one candidate or the other, just trying to parse the data as it comes in.

Same-day dropbox votes remain in AZ, which were strongly Republican in 2020 - but that was also an election with considerably more COVID issues than now.

ABCNews had this to say…
[quote]In Clark County -- Nevada's most populous, home to some 70% of the state's electorate -- Registrar Joe Gloria said at a Thursday afternoon news conference that there are there are still 50,000 outstanding ballots that need to be counted. He said he expects the majority of ballots to be tabulated by Saturday night. Earlier this week, Gloria said he estimated it could be next Thursday before the county gives unofficial count totals.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 11, 2022 2:49 AM |
As I said, R74, Ralston thought the makeup of the outstanding votes was probably enough to tip the balance in Cortez Masto’s favor. But the number of such votes were less than originally thought. As an aside, he has a pretty good predictive record, of which he should be proud. Pre-election, he predicted Cortez Masto would win. So he may some professional rooting interest in seeing his prediction realized.

We are the greatest country in the world and our voting process is shit. There needs to be consistency across the board instead of every state doing it's own thing. Maybe I'm being irrational, but I think it is unacceptable that we are two days out and ballots are still being counted. There has to be a better way.

by Anonymous | reply 85 | November 11, 2022 3:04 AM |
Disturbing? It has to do with the # of election workers. A lot of paper votes having to be tabulated a certain way (by law) vs the # of workers. It isn’t disturbing, but stupid.

so just because Murdoch media is now turning on Trump and propping up DeSantis, mainstream media feels like they must proclaim him the story of the night when in reality he was an exception. Florida gave right wingers false hope that's how the night would go
CNN will probably reach out to someone in his camp for an interview, just like they're pathetically giving fucking Pence a townhall next week! So afraid to appear "biased" they overcompensate for right wingers

R158 I hate to type this but very likely in 2023 that SCOTUS repeals gay marriage. Now that will get lots of media coverage and it would motivate SOME liberals for 2024 but I don't think it will be as impactful as abortion for the simple fact that many voters vote on what affects them. Obviously half the population is women so a lot of them (except the majority of white women in red states) care. How many straights will get angry about gay marriage being taken away is unknown. I actually commented to my friends earlier this year that luckily right wingers aren't too smart. If they were, they would have repealed gay marriage first before the midterms and then abortion afterwards.
I do think though that abortion will still be a huge issue in 2024. Obviously congress won't be able to make it a national law. Manchin and Sinema clearly weren't willing to buck the filibuster for it this year so we'd need a larger majority in the Senate and of course to also control the House to pass it. I think there will be a lot more abortion horror stories from red states going into 2024 so perhaps that will motivate women to come out again. Maybe that combined with the repeal of gay marriage could work for Democrats

It's also blaming women. A far larger proportion of white men vote for Republicans. And it doesn't make sense there either because men are legally on the hook for child support. In any event, for everybody, it's far less of a risk than it was. It's an off shoot of polarization. The will to win outstrips the nature of scandal. You give them way too much credit. It is not religious conviction that drives them. It's power over others. No matter how they dress it up, it's about power. Telling gays not to fornicate, telling women to carry a baby to terms even if it kills them, sex before marriage being a sin, masturbation makes Baby Jesus cry, etc.

It’s not impossible that Democrats retain the House with most razor thin majority. That doesn’t get them the ability to pass much, since Sinema and Manchin would kill a filibuster or spending. I will probably get shit on for saying this, but I have no issues with evangelicals being hypocrites. They prioritize the mission over the personal flaws of who is going to get them what they want. I only wish Democrats could more often look past the personal flaws of their candidates and vote for people who will get us to where we need to be. There is absolutely no reason why Al Franken should have been driven from the Senate. It was stupid and short-sighted. Supporting a politician or voting for a candidate that will get you at least halfway there is better than not voting and essentially giving your vote to someone who wants to take you in the wrong direction.

I’m a born-again Christian and I’m staunchly pro-choice. However, I understand the resentment of women who got themselves knocked up when abortion was illegal. Women of my mother's generation could not use abortion or The Pill as a contraceptive. So they resent women today that have this choice.
And trust me, these women like my mother did not want the father of their Oopsie baby as their spouse. Many, many got a divorce. Alls I’m saying is that they vote believing women should keep their legs closed. They wish that they themselves should’ve kept their legs together. However, they love their children. It’s subliminal resentment so they vote pro-life.
Im not trying to be an apologist. It’s just my experience as a 59 year old.

Most Evangelical Christians are not truly college educated. At best they attend BIOLA or (God forbid) Hillsdale “College.” Post high school “education” then becomes an extension of indoctrination. Most Christian colleges is an exercise in extended Christian indoctrination.

If the Democrats retain both the House and the Senate it will be such a psychological blow to Republicans that some may even combust due to their anger. But, Democrats need to be ready to pounce if that opportunity happens! President Biden has pretty much given the speech that I would have liked for him to give but I'd like to see some "outside" group put together a one minute promotional commercial once such a feat is finalized.
The background music would be the song "America" with Americans throughout the land living their lives, smiling, and singing the song. Images of landscapes. manufacturing, people voting, etc. would be integrated in. The promo spot would end with a determined President Biden looking straight into the camera and either saying or written; "I believe in America and Democracy",
The Republicans will LOSE their minds!

YES! R231 it's Bouzy. He's been very good. I'm thinking we can still keep the House. Some of the women I was worried about like Lauren Underwood, and Elissa Slotkin managed to win.
I will say, Sean Patrick Maloney is really taking his defeat badly and I don't blame him. But he is getting ugly. He needs to hush! Biden will definitely pick him to do something important if he just calms down. Bitterness is not a good survival technique.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | November 11, 2022 2:26 PM |
Maloney knew better. AOC won her seat because Crowley, in line for the leadership of the Dem Party at the time, switched districts after redistricting, thinking it would be easier for him to win. The Dems should have learned their lesson then, but somehow they didn't.
by Anonymous | reply 237 | November 11, 2022 2:35 PM |
I don't know if the Dems have a chance to win the House.
There are 31 uncalled races per CNN. Two are in CA and are Dem vs Dem, so that's two which will definitely go Dem, and takes us to 198. CNN also has NV1, NV4, WA8 for Dems, even though they're not officially called yet, but we'll count them, and that brings us to 201.
Alaska, AZ4, CA6, CA9, CA21, CA26, MA2, NV3, WA3 all look to be almost guaranteed for Dems, so that gets us to 210.
That leaves 17 remaining races which are toss-ups, and Dems would have to get 8 of those.
Those are just my figures, Politico is less generous and says there are only 11 toss-ups and Dems would have to get 9 of those.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | November 11, 2022 2:50 PM |

[quote] “Republicans just said, ‘Well, the other side sucks, and Biden sucks.’ Well, no doubt! But it's pretty hard to convince folks, particularly independent-minded ones who don't tend to trust the process much, to vote for you, if you don't have something affirmative to say and offer,” Hawley said in a Friday interview.

I am pretty far left (no proof in anonymous social media, but there's a context for the following:
I think some of these comments about religion and religious voters are uninformed at best, and counter-productive at worst. In the 60s and 70s protestants (some of what people now call evangelicals) were PRO abortion - they thought that was rational, compassionate, not extreme like those weird Roman Catholics who burned incense, worshipped dead Jesus hanging on the cross, prayed to Mary, and made women die with illegal abortions. (Religion is, now and always, embedded in culture, helps to define culture, and culture and political projects - the Koch Bros think tanks - coopted these Protestants).
And those spooky, crazee Roman Catholics helped form the union movement (Dorothy Day et. al.) and were the vanguard of the anti-war movement (the Barrigans, etc.)
Religion, as the "problem" is too simplistic... making it be the problem ignores the real problems.

R270, and yet you have people here on Datalounge crowing about how Mandela Barnes was a terrible candidate ("too far left") and easy to beat, when he nearly won that race against Johnson.
I live here in Wisconsin and I saw far more ads from Johnson than Barnes. The Democratic Party focus too much on flipping states like Florida and Texas when they could easily flip Wisconsin.

by Anonymous | reply 273 | November 11, 2022 5:06 PM |
R272 One of the two most important takeaways from the midterms for Dems.
1) North Carolina and Wisconsin and Georgia need resources from DNC in 2024 (w/NV and AZ). Texas and Florida and Ohio are gone.
2) The youth vote, including especially those who'll turn 18 in the next two years, needs to be targeted. They helped in the midterms so much. "oh, the Dems are losing the Latinos!!"... check Latinos under 30. They, like all voters under 30, are voting 60-70% Dem.

The national Democratic Party is frequently overlooking or outright shrugging off local races that could be won, but which they don't want to spend the money on. I think they should take a more targeted approach to Florida and spend some of that FL money on other state races, and just let the red districts in FL go red, there's nothing you can do about it at this point.

He's actually never been anything other than what he constantly says: A grifting, narcissistic liar. The only thing he doesn't lie about is how much of a liar he is.
It boggles my mind how anyone can latch onto him. I will never get it.
by Anonymous | reply 330 | November 11, 2022 10:29 PM |
if the repubs are "truly done with Trump" as is the narrative going now, then they'll stop paying his legal bills too. We haven't heard any reporting on a change there, have we? I think right wing media is testing the waters to pull away from Trump but how long that lasts will depend on the final outcome of the House and Senate races.
Their base is fully fine with being jerked around in different directions. At the start of 2015 repub primary, the right wing media was trying to stop Trump. Then they jumped on his train when he started winning.
It's so telling how repubs MIGHT only pull away from now if he makes them lose. It has nothing to do with his character or the damage he was brought to the government and society at large

It puzzling to me why anyone thought that Maloney (or any democrat for that matter) could win the newly drawn 17th district. The new map lops off some heavily blue neighborhoods in the south while adding counties to the north that have some pretty committed republicans. All anyone had to do was to look at a detailed map of the 2020 election to understand that it was always going to be an uphill battle.

Beto seems to raise his own money. Not sure the DNC did a whole hell of a lot. They wouldn't even bother to help him when he was running for senate. And Abbott was always going to be harder than Ted Cruz to beat, and also Beto has more baggage now, and for some reason people like Abbott in Texas. I'm from Texas and I don't get it, but that's how it is.
He should help out the DNC anyway. He didn't miss a visiting town, and talking to voters no matter how small it was, which democrats could learn from.
I will say the POTUS run was very ill advised since he had the infamous gun grab comment during that.

Lombardo bent the knee to white supremacists in the Metro Police Union and did not require policemen to be vaccinated. He factually turned the police force into a COVID SPREADER ORGANIZATION. Then surprise, policemen started to die from COVID and because they were given the option to vaccinate, their deaths were determined to not be work related. And boy did that piss off the Patriot Freedom assholes. 12 dead policemen with families ineligible for OTJ benefits. Lombardo is already ripe for Democrats to recall him before he is sworn in.

What this election cycle has really highlighted is that local news is far more reliable and indicative of what's actually happening on the ground than all the bloviating from the supposedly "liberal" mainstream media and their "pundits". And, in the current climate, that's why the demise of Twitter is so regrettable since it was one of very few places where such information was able to trickle. A couple of months ago, local activists in the states such as PA and MI were reporting registration of new female voters that hadn't been seen in decades During that same time, the media such as NYT, The Atlantic, WAPo, CNN were playing whataboutism, forecasting doom and gloom for the Democrats because of Afghanistan, the economy, inflation, and whatnot. Now, they pretend like they got it right all along.

I think it's time to start analyzing state by state rather than DC-assumed trends over the whole country
we have seen Florida, Ohio and Texas move further to the right. The polling suggested all the races would be closer but sadly Demings, Crist, Ryan and O'Rourke lost badly
Then we see Colorado, Michigan and Pennsylvania move further to the left. Polling was saying all 3 states would be very close yet Fetterman was announced the winner on Tuesday night just hours after polls closing
then there are purple states like New Hampshire and Wisconsin which kept their incumbents in the statewide races of both parties

I missed it but I'm surprised that more discussion has not been mentioned about the amounts of money that Republicans and their corporate donors have thrown into these races to purposely spread misinformation and to deceive the electorate. I watched an Ari Melber report about this and from his report these people bought off polling companies, etc to execute this strategy. Quite honestly, (and speaking only for myself and my opinion) I'm pleasantly surprised that the electorate did not fall for these tactics. I had reached a sad conclusion that the American electorate has been so dumbed down that such manipulations would work. I'm very happy to have been wrong.

But something else I took away from this is that in giving him a really hard look, an unexpectedly high number of voters discovered GOP that they could stand to vote for. Therein, the millions and millions and millions spent by Ron Lauder to prop up Zeldin were, in fact, well spent.
[quote] After winning the Republican primary this summer as a strong Trump ally, Zeldin tried to avoid talking about Trump and his supporters, many of whom still deny that Trump lost the 2020 presidential election. Last month, a day after Trump gave his “complete & total endorsement,” Zeldin told reporters it wasn’t newsworthy.
[quote] “I heard from some Democrats that they would consider voting for a Republican, but not one associated with Trump,” said Michael Balboni, a Republican strategist and former state senator from Nassau County.
A corollary to that is NY is a microcosm of the national GOP predicament:
[quote] “Zeldin did about as well as possible for a Republican running statewide in today’s political environment,” Muzzio said. Too many voters saw Zeldin as “an election-denying, anti-abortion Trump protégé,” but without those views he probably wouldn’t have won the GOP nomination, Muzzio said.

Well, Republicans have quite the conundrum, don't they: "How do we appeal to the batshit crazy Republican base AND the general population?"

Are these independents and Republicans uneasy about Ron DeSantis though…

Good question, R586.
Cautiously, I will argue yes.
He's an off-putting bully. The argument that he is tRump without the crazy is belied by his isolationism and lack of network support.
The smoke and mirrors dissipates as his wife can only do so much on the national stage

Ari Melber's program about all the money and buying polling operations etc. did have an effect. It made the races a lot closer. No way Walker should have got as much support as he did. But money was flowing into GA and literally swamped Warnock. And McConnell and the gang, Scott et al are dumping another 50 million into the runoff. The ads they run are deliberate lies, misleading smearing, etc. It's a fucking free for all. They used to police that shit and fine people but the GOP doesn't care. Another problem here in Ga is that Warnock and Abrams did not run a coordinated campaign.

Katie Porter is one of my favorite Reps. She's a bad ass.

R583, that aligns with what I felt about blue NY. Trump kept NY from going even more red. The R pickups there will probably allow them to win the House. What an irony,!

Just a reminder that part 6 is up. I guess we’ll need threads until the House is decided. On another note, fuck Twitter. I deleted my account and have been just going on for Nate Cohn, Jon Ralston and Dave Wasserman, but now Twitter is forcing me to log in to scroll. Anyone have a workaround?

Twitter always required you to log in if you wanted to see more than one or two tweets, or anything in a person's replies. There's no workaround for that, unfortunately.

Ten out of 50 GOP senators are onboard to get a lying, brain damaged simpleton into their ranks. They are aggressively shameless.
Scott is crawling back to the Senate with his tail between his legs after the red wave turned out to only be light spotting. And they are all acting like nothing much has happened even as the populist wing of their caucus comes for their scalps.

You can use Nitter to get around it.
