The January 6th Hearings Part 3

The nation is debating whether Rudy Giuliani was drunk, when, and where.

Is he a nicotine-soaked, beer-besmirched, whiskey-greased, red-eyed devil?

America's fate hangs in the balance.

The second thread isn't at anywhere near 600 replies, though. This is premature.

by Anonymousreply 4June 15, 2022 6:39 PM

R2 Thank you. I will not sit idly by while another current events thread is allowed to max out replies without a designated follow-up.

by Anonymousreply 5June 16, 2022 12:22 PM

Thank you for the new thread, I don't know why I couldn't find it in a search. The other one is incredibly slow, so I may just park my caboose over here.

The photo released of Pence and his family in his ceremonial office, after rioters got to the Capitol but before the Pences were moved to the loading dock, shows his brother the Representative looking suspiciously calm. Pence looks like he's so tense he could crack walnuts with his ass.

OP....

LOVED THE OPENING!!!!

I burst out laughing when I clicked over to this thread!!!

Good job and thanks for the morning laugh!!!

by Anonymousreply 9June 16, 2022 1:03 PM

R6 What a bizarre picture. Mannerist, almost.

Is that his daughter on the couch? She looks like Erin Moriarty, and a weirdly calm Erin Moriarty at that. Everybody in that photo looks pretty chill except Mike, whose life is apparently flashing before his eyes.

OP, I ADORE you!

Carrie Nation is one of my all-time favorite historical figures.

by Anonymousreply 13June 16, 2022 1:48 PM

OP is again the troll who started part 2. Be aware that at least half of what they say is lies and they are actually mocking the hearings. Utilize ignoredar and youā€™ll see what a piece of shit they are. Itā€™s DeFacto.

by Anonymousreply 14June 16, 2022 2:23 PM

šŸ˜®šŸ˜®šŸ˜®

by Anonymousreply 15June 16, 2022 2:28 PM

R14 Give it a rest already. It's not me. Like 90% of Americans I don't give two shits about these hearings.

by Anonymousreply 16June 16, 2022 2:33 PM

It would be ideal if after the 1/6 televised hearings that Garland name Sally Yates as Special Prosecutor.

by Anonymousreply 17June 16, 2022 2:37 PM

Amazing! You must have scrambled to log out of one troll account and login to your official asshole account. And unlike Beetlejuice, I only had to say its name once.

If thatā€™s not proof, I donā€™t know what is. Took only ten fucking minutes.

by Anonymousreply 18June 16, 2022 2:57 PM

R18 You said the proof was using "ignoredar" but there is in fact no proof on my account that I'm saying the things you say I'm saying.

The "proof" is always on somebody else's account.

I don't even know why I bother anymore, but it's annoying to constantly read lies about myself. I suppose I should just ignore the trolls.

by Anonymousreply 19June 16, 2022 2:59 PM

Well, what time does the show start?

by Anonymousreply 20June 16, 2022 3:12 PM

The OP posts lots of anti-gay and anti-Biden stuff. He also posts nonsensical stuff in these threads.

You people are really falling for it.

by Anonymousreply 21June 16, 2022 3:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 22June 16, 2022 3:30 PM

Canā€™t fall for it if we have the asshole on ignore, r21

by Anonymousreply 23June 16, 2022 3:32 PM

Then why not make a new, non-TROLL OP thread, R23?

by Anonymousreply 24June 16, 2022 3:33 PM

[quote]I suppose I should just ignore the trolls.

In this Datalounge, the best of all possible worlds, it is remarkably easy to ignore yourself!

So, the Committee has "invited" Miss Ginni to come to the table and testify...

You see, this is the problem... JUST SUPEONA AND ARREST THE BITCH!

by Anonymousreply 30June 16, 2022 3:56 PM

On MSNBC, they said that from the beginning Cheney had been fighting the idea of questioning Ginni Thomas. Sheā€™s only an ally when she wants to be.

by Anonymousreply 31June 16, 2022 4:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 33June 16, 2022 4:01 PM

Why should I bother? I can still see the non-troll posts on here.

by Anonymousreply 34June 16, 2022 4:11 PM

Two new developments:

Committee will ask Ginni Thomas to speak with them.

Trump demands equal time!

What a circus!

by Anonymousreply 35June 16, 2022 4:38 PM

I'm sure it will all end with Trump humbly apologizing profusely for his actions and being led tearfully away in handcuffs. The nation will heal, and the Supreme Court will vote to keep abortion safe and legal. Republicans will act according to their Christian beliefs, and help the poor, minorities, immigrants and all those suffering. Putin will realize the error of his ways and withdraw from Ukraine and rebuild the country. De-Facto will have a "spiritual awakening" and commit hari kari with a lovely antique Japanese sword. The Data Lounge will become a bastion of virtue, beloved by the not wonky eyed Andy Cohen, and Lena Dunham will ceremoniously change her name to "Lens", to officiate the circle of healing and forgiveness.

Or everything will end in shit.

by Anonymousreply 36June 16, 2022 4:39 PM

What do you think, R36?

by Anonymousreply 37June 16, 2022 4:46 PM

Very powerfully disturbing video of insurrectionists. Trump may never be charged. Trump may become dictator for life in 2024, but there is a clear record of what happened last year. History will not ignore their dishonor.

by Anonymousreply 46June 16, 2022 5:14 PM

I don't like how they say; "Trump was going to allow the crowd to hang his own Vice President..." I think it would go over better if they just said they were trying to kill the Vice President of the United States.

by Anonymousreply 47June 16, 2022 5:15 PM

Why is Luttig speaking so slow? I think heā€™s reading!

by Anonymousreply 48June 16, 2022 5:26 PM

Jesus God old man, get on with it. Is this old fool brain damaged? He acted just before he started talking like he was scared to death. s

by Anonymousreply 49June 16, 2022 5:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 50June 16, 2022 5:29 PM

Is he deliberately sand bagging??

by Anonymousreply 51June 16, 2022 5:31 PM

He'll probably get death threats no matter what he says. That's the new "normal".

by Anonymousreply 52June 16, 2022 5:33 PM

So, to all you digital-corrupted kids.... he's speaking for history. He wants to be deliberate and precise. Again, the purpose of this hearing is to get political advantage, win the 24 hr news cycle, or get likes and re-tweets. This is for history.

by Anonymousreply 53June 16, 2022 5:34 PM

He looks like heā€™s reading. Maybe he needs notes to keep precise. But cmon! Itā€™s like heā€™s lil kid trying to read!

by Anonymousreply 54June 16, 2022 5:35 PM

^^ This is NOT for the 24 hr news cycle.

by Anonymousreply 55June 16, 2022 5:35 PM

I hope the LEAST that happens from this is that Dump can never again run for any public office. Most of all Iā€™d like him to keel over watching this parade of truths. He HATES the truth. He was demanding the murder of Pence.

by Anonymousreply 73June 16, 2022 5:45 PM

R71 OK, but then why choose him to be the witness? He canā€™t be the only expert they could find.

by Anonymousreply 74June 16, 2022 5:45 PM

Greg Jacob looks a little like Peter Coyote..

by Anonymousreply 75June 16, 2022 5:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 79June 16, 2022 5:51 PM

Oooh, there's hot daddy lawyer Eric Herschmann again! I wish they'd haul his fine ass into the hearings and let us see him in real time.

by Anonymousreply 80June 16, 2022 5:53 PM

And to think that guy was a Senior VP and General Counsel at Boeing from 2006 - 2019.

by Anonymousreply 81June 16, 2022 5:54 PM

Which guy, r81?

by Anonymousreply 82June 16, 2022 5:55 PM

Is that the late John McLaughlin seated behind Mr. Jacobs?

"Buhy buhy."

by Anonymousreply 83June 16, 2022 5:56 PM

[quote]] OK, but then why choose him to be the witness? He canā€™t be the only expert they could find.

He was actually participant in the events because he advised Pence at the time.

From CNN: Luttig was involved in advising the Pence team against claims from Trump allies like attorney John Eastman, who wrote a memo saying Pence had the power to single-handedly block the certification of the election for Joe Biden.

by Anonymousreply 84June 16, 2022 5:56 PM

Greg Jacob just referred to Democrat lawyers. Itā€™s so fucking entrenched in these fuckers to try to own libs.

by Anonymousreply 85June 16, 2022 5:56 PM

Why do they only show us the same one pathetic minute with Jared when he testified for 8 hours?

by Anonymousreply 86June 16, 2022 5:56 PM

My interest at that time was trying to get pardons done.

Pardons for what?

by Anonymousreply 87June 16, 2022 5:56 PM

Not R81 but the who says fuck a lot without completely saying it

by Anonymousreply 88June 16, 2022 5:57 PM

[quote] Which guy, [R81]?

Luttig.

by Anonymousreply 89June 16, 2022 5:57 PM

R87, there were a lot of pardons for cash, usually of ordinary criminals who had connections.

by Anonymousreply 90June 16, 2022 5:59 PM

Sorry, I was referring to R80 about Herschmann, ignore me.

by Anonymousreply 91June 16, 2022 5:59 PM

Doubt we'll see much of Judge Luttig's boring testimony in MSNBC highlights tonight.

by Anonymousreply 92June 16, 2022 6:01 PM

Jesus fucking Christ, I'm about to put a bullet through my TV screen.

by Anonymousreply 93June 16, 2022 6:03 PM

Eastman was contacted by the spouse of a sitting Supreme Court Justice to invalidate the election results.

Luttig is asked a question and then fumbles with the microphone to answer. He.really.............does...................not.....

To.......... Answer.......

by Anonymousreply 94June 16, 2022 6:03 PM

Luttig is doing a little better now that he isnā€™t reading.

by Anonymousreply 95June 16, 2022 6:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 96June 16, 2022 6:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 99June 16, 2022 6:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 124June 16, 2022 6:35 PM

God how I hate people who start sentences off with "so".

by Anonymousreply 125June 16, 2022 6:39 PM

I'll alert the media, R125.

by Anonymousreply 126June 16, 2022 6:41 PM

So, I really hate people that begin sentences with "God".

by Anonymousreply 127June 16, 2022 6:41 PM

I don't know, maybe it's just me... but I think this day's hearing is very damning... the other testimony was BIG lies (so big that MAGA always, always weasels in a way to believe them). But this is very pointed, single issue... did the VP have the constitutional authority to do what Trump ordered/wanted him to do. No, he did not. Trump's lawyers knew he did not. Trump knew it. Trump just lied... and later threaten his VP on Jan 6.

I think sometimes simple, singular stories are more effective.

by Anonymousreply 128June 16, 2022 6:41 PM

10 minute potty or food break...maybe coffee, to keep awake.

by Anonymousreply 129June 16, 2022 6:42 PM

by Anonymousreply 130June 16, 2022 6:43 PM

I hope they conclude today with footage of the barricade made by those under attack in the Capitol and Mike Pence and Co. barely escaping the mob by mere minutes.

by Anonymousreply 131June 16, 2022 6:44 PM

[quote]The calculated way Trump plotted to violate the Constitution actually is chilling.

And he was warned over and over again that his plan could lead to violence.

by Anonymousreply 132June 16, 2022 6:44 PM

R130 Agreed, this is a big takeaway. Was Trump just nuts and confused? No, he was criminal-minded. He was very calculating. And his calculation absolutely included the threat of violence.

by Anonymousreply 133June 16, 2022 6:45 PM

R128 Important testimony but not presented in an a very impressive way. Guess they couldnā€™t help that. Since this hearing wasnā€™t in prime time, the media will cull the important clips and the analysts will explain them. I think they should have shown more of the actual threat to the VP at the Capitol.

by Anonymousreply 157June 16, 2022 7:07 PM

They are all thugs...directed by the thug in chief. Terrorists. So, whites can't be terrorists?

by Anonymousreply 158June 16, 2022 7:10 PM

It really is amazing how ALL of the rioters are white. Was there even one black or Asian person there?

by Anonymousreply 159June 16, 2022 7:10 PM

And what's really, really pathetic about these flying monkey above all else: Trump thinks they're trash and is embarrassed these are the ugly, low life people who support him. Right this fucking second if he were invited to a ***LIBERAL, ELITE, HOLLYWOOD*** party, it wouldn't take him even a second to think about it. I remember when Hillary conceded in 16 after winning the popular vote and losing the electoral vote. She fought back tears as she confirmed her belief in the rule of law and her supporters openly wept. Magats mocked this moment for years, "cry more libs". Clinton supporters did not riot or declare fraud but there were massive demonstrations for years against maga.

by Anonymousreply 166June 16, 2022 7:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 186June 16, 2022 7:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 247June 16, 2022 9:33 PM

Chris Wallace: Jan. 6 Committee: Hearings Arenā€™t ā€˜Changing Mindsā€™

Well, I think that theyā€™ve done a very effective job so far, and theyā€™ve only had two hearings. But the opening sequence, in which they basically went through the whole thing, and then specifically when they focused on what, you know, what has been called The Big Lie, the argument that in fact, Donald Trump knew that heā€™d lost the election and continued to pursue this argument that it was a stolen election and a rigged election. I think theyā€™ve done a good job of that.

But, you know, I was skeptical from the start, and said so before the first hearing, John, about what impact that would have. And all you have to do is look at the results of the primaries on Tuesday, where you have Tom Rice, one of the very few, I think it was ten Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump over the January 6 riot. Heā€™s a five-time, five-term congressman from South Carolina. And not only was he beaten in the Republican primary, but the election-denying challenger Russell Fry got 50 plus percent of the vote. And this five-term congressman Tom Rice got 25%, for an incumbent thatā€™s pretty bad. You also had election deniers winning, including for secretary of state and the Republican nominee in Nevada, a swing state.

So, you know, are they doing an effective job in making their case? Yes. Is it going to change peopleā€™s minds? I think thatā€™s very much to be determined, and the early indications are not so much.

R428, of course, it's not going to change the minds of tie-hard Trump cultists. Nothing will. As for the ratings slip, they had the first hearing in prime time; the second was on a weekday at 10 am; today's hearing was in the middle of the day. These hearings will, nevertheless, reach those who can be reached, as well as those who have turned, and always were, against Trump. Seven million voters won the election for Biden. These hearings are going to increase those numbers when it comes to making sure the fascist can't be let in again. We better hope, anyway.

There were others, some made of cord (see Snopes article below).

But it's doubtful, had the insurrectionists actually managed to lay hands on Pence, that they would have had the patience to drag him outside the building. They came equipped with zip ties, bludgeons, knives, chemical spray, and flagpoles with sharpened spear tips. Any of these would have dispatched him quickly, where they captured him. If they truly decided to hang him, they would more likely have used found items on hand, i.e. electrical cords, curtain ropes, flag braid, etc., to put around his neck, and heave him over the balcony rail in the congressional chambers. Don't kid yourself that harm could not or would not be done.

by Anonymousreply 263June 16, 2022 11:16 PM

I'm uncomfortable with making Pence a hero. I watched him lick Trump's rusty ass for four years. And before that he was a homphobic Governor of Indiana.

Please don't sanitize him. He simply consulted his friends (including Kellyanne Cuntway) and 51 > 49 decided it would be detrimental to his political future to side with Trump. That's all.

by Anonymousreply 264June 16, 2022 11:18 PM

Make him a hero with a wink and a nod. We need this narrative now. Pence's only hope is a cabinet appointment in a future Republican White House...if there ever is one before he croaks. He's far from a hero but he was kind of a tough motherfucker on 1/6. He was put in a shitty position and did what was right for the country.

by Anonymousreply 265June 16, 2022 11:29 PM

Like it or not, Pence was the one to stand between chaos and the orderly transition of power, and maybe worse. One can't whitewash that.

by Anonymousreply 266June 16, 2022 11:39 PM

Enough with these hearings. I'm rooting for an oil wrestling match between Eric Herschmann and Michael Avenatti.

But seriously, I think between these hearings, the defeat of Roe and Don't Say Gay, millions of young people who may be first time voters will be inspired to make a difference in 2024. And hopefully, in 11/2022.

by Anonymousreply 267June 16, 2022 11:43 PM

That and Trump didn't give him much to do except kiss his ass. Pence knew this was the only power he had as VP and probably studied every last word of that assignment of certifying the electoral college votes.

I don't care whether what the ratings for the hearings were. This is not Monday Night Football or NBC's Tuesday night lineup. This is about the rule of law, free and fair elections, and the threat to the republic.

Who's going to watch this? An informed citizenry. Unfortunately the level of ignorance, apathy, and gullibility in the US is so high that the percentage of informed citizens pales in comparison.

Still, we must stay informed for the sake of democracy. J. Michael Luttig and Greg Jacob were incredible witnesses to the chicanery and criminality of the cabal around that imbecile and the imbecile himself. I watched it today, because I'm not teaching at the present. I listened via the NYT's site, while I did other work. I gained respect for Pence. Before January 6, I thought he was creepy and sinister for his anti-gay views and getting into bed with that imbecile.

I respect all members of this committee for holding those responsible for that armed, dangerous, and violent insurrection accountable. That is the rule of law in action.

ā€œThereā€™s two questions here,ā€ Mudd continued. ā€œThereā€™s a question of whether I think the president did the right thing. No. Thereā€™s a question of what I think the Department of Justice will do.ā€

Mudd said it would be a colossal mistake for Attorney General Merrick Garland to ever try Trump for conspiracy, which he said is impossible to prove.

ā€œIf you donā€™t win that case at the back end, youā€™re perceived to be someone who is pursuing Donald Trump because you have partisan, political interest,ā€ he said.

Lemon said the committeeā€™s witnesses had all testified Trumpā€™s inner circle had all informed him he had lost.

ā€œThe presidentā€™s going to say my advisers told me I won,ā€ Mudd said. ā€œI thought I won, that wasnā€™t a conspiracy.ā€

After some back and forth about whether Trump knew the results of the race were accurate or not, Mudd and Lemon traded barbs.

MUDD: Donā€™t you think that the defense can find witness who is said the president thought he won. Come on, don. The defense will find people who said the president believed he was right. How can this be a conspiracy if the president said he was trying to defend democracy?

LEMON: You said the presidentā€™s advisers told him that he won. Not one of the advisors told him he won.

MUDD: I donā€™t buy it. I am going to tell you, defense attorneys will find people who say the president thought he won.

Trump can say anything he wants bot the question is whether a preponderance of the evidence would convince a judge or jury.

by Anonymousreply 283June 17, 2022 4:51 AM

If I think a bank or store ripped me off I don't get to hold them up and steal money because I think I was cheated. If I think I should've won the Oscar for my community theatre play I can't just send a mob to take it away from Will Smith so I can have it.

by Anonymousreply 284June 17, 2022 5:03 AM

if they're going to have these hearings during the morning or afternoon, the big 3 non-cable networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) should all air 1 hour recaps/analysis of the most important moments each night at 8 PM. Tonight was the last game of the NBA championship which started at 9. There's no reason why from 8 to 9 ABC couldn't have had a recap to today's monster hearing

local news channels are mentioning it a little bit but it's not enough

The Nixon hearings got so much more attention yet this was so much worse criminal behavior

by Anonymousreply 285June 17, 2022 7:12 AM

[quote]The Nixon hearings got so much more attention yet this was so much worse criminal behavior.

Those were much more innocent times, when the thought of any criminal behavior coming from the White House was genuinely shocking.

After four years of a crime family living in the White House, we have people calling hearings into treason and sedition "a partisan witch hunt" and "beating a dead horse."

by Anonymousreply 286June 17, 2022 7:20 AM

I guarantee you the last hearing will have visuals/sound of Trump - that's what they're saving for the end. Including saying they should hang Pence.

by Anonymousreply 287June 17, 2022 7:38 AM

I don't believe anyone had a serious intention of hanging Pence, nor do they appear to have had any means of doing so.

I wish people would think a little before making insane claims just because it is emotionally satisfying. Please stick to reality.

[quote]I don't care whether what the ratings for the hearings were. This is not Monday Night Football or NBC's Tuesday night lineup. This is about the rule of law, free and fair elections, and the threat to the republic.

Unfortunately, I am old enough to (vaguely) remember the Watergate hearings and people didn't necessarily want to watch that either, but there was nothing else on & no Netflix to escape to. And it's during the day when most people are at work. So I don't think we should assume people don't care or aren't engaged. They just don't want to commit the time.

Aside from all the discussions about laying the groundwork for prosecutions, recording it for history, etc, it's a game of inches. You'll never convince the faithful & their various motivations, but I do think they'll convince enough to hopefully turn the tide against Trump & the repigs

by Anonymousreply 290June 17, 2022 10:41 AM

Ok r288, the the gibbering rioter with the US flag tied to a spear whooping about hanging Mike Pence was just there to peacefully persuade him. And the rioters climbing the stairwell inside the Capitol chanting ā€œNaaaaancy, weā€™re coming for you, Naaaaancyā€ were what? A welcoming committee? Pence was surrounded by Secret Service agents who wouldā€™ve shot them if confronted. What did Pelosi have, Capitol Police?

by Anonymousreply 294June 17, 2022 11:19 AM

Yeah R288, the reality is that 5 people died during the insurrection. Pence could've very easily been added to the death toll.

by Anonymousreply 295June 17, 2022 11:21 AM

PEnce would have been beaten and stomped to death. Stop trolling. The noise was a visual, but the rioters/terrorists would have treated Pence to the same treatment that the police got. Pence wouldnā€™t have body armor. Heā€™s have been beaten to death. So would have Pelosi. There was no delegation. Mob style beating. The first to go would be his eyes.

*THE Noose

by Anonymousreply 297June 17, 2022 11:35 AM

Oh, R296 it totally right, with the whole thing ending in some sort of Game of Thrones style presentation of his severed, eyeless head for news cameras, probably mounted somewhere on the Capitol Building. Ditto with Nancy, though I think it would be even more brutal. The noose may have been for show, but the intention to kill was real

R293 I have a question for you:

A spear!? That's very dramatic and alarming.

When I Google this spear, as I am about to do, is it going to turn out to be a useless prop of some kind? Is this going to turn out to be a childish misinterpretation of what calling something a "spear" entails?

My hypothesis is that it will be, since that what happened with the unusable "noose" on a four foot high gallows that was situated a good eighth of a mile away from Pence.

I'll report back.

by Anonymousreply 303June 17, 2022 12:27 PM

It's enough to say they could have beaten him- that's a sincere threat which is obvious.

by Anonymousreply 313June 17, 2022 1:22 PM

R303, I believe it was a flagpole sharpened to a point, in effect, a spear.

Am I remembering wrong that at other protests, marchers were required to affix their signs and flags to cardboard paper tubes? But right, this was a rally, not a protest.

by Anonymousreply 314June 17, 2022 1:22 PM

These people are viewing politics just like they view professional wrestling, it's EXACTLY the same: to them it's all just TELEVISION and their Leader is a television star. He grouses that he ACTUALLY won the election and they, even though they KNOW he's full of shit, shout Hell Yes, we believe you, and they go out and act accordingly. They KNOW (and certainly by this point) that there is NO credible evidence that there was anything wrong with the conduct of the Presidential election and yet they are publicly, loudly pretending that Trump actually won. It's all just "pretend it's real" stuff. A HUGE mob of uneducated morons who are going along with Shitler because it jibes with their racism and their fear. It's all make-believe.

by Anonymousreply 315June 17, 2022 1:32 PM

Trump's actions in the past 1.5 years back up completely the Founders' fears about mob action and mob rule.

by Anonymousreply 316June 17, 2022 2:25 PM

Donā€™t interact with R309. Itā€™s OP/DeFacto who insists theyā€™re totally not trying to troll.

by Anonymousreply 317June 17, 2022 2:30 PM

Those yahoos definitely wanted to hurt Pence and would have tried if they had gotten chance, but itā€™s hard to believe that the Secret Service couldnā€™t have protected him, even if some of them had gotten hurt in the process. Pelosi, AOC & others had no such protection. Also, if Pence was attacked, they would have whisked him away whether he wanted to go or not, so the plot to stop his certification of the election would have succeeded.

by Anonymousreply 318June 17, 2022 2:33 PM

Itā€™s ridiculous to say that people who were chanting about hanging Mike Pence and dragging him out of the Capitol meant him no harm - no matter how they planned to do it or how realistic it was. That is not acceptable political free speech.

by Anonymousreply 319June 17, 2022 2:35 PM

r288 is OP.

by Anonymousreply 320June 17, 2022 2:40 PM

R314 It's a gray plastic piece about 3 inches long that's in the shape of a spear tip. He attached it to the edge of a flag pole somehow. I can't get a picture to link, I'll see if I can find one.

You can see the edge, it's definitely not sharp. It looks like it came from a dollar store Halloween costume- why would the shirtless young man dressed as a Viking have this on his person? The mind boggles. Surely he intended to assassinate the Vice President of the United States.

Sorry my friend, it's a waste of time to take you seriously. These were serious, historically grave crimes being committed against the very government of the country, plain and simple.

[quote]Those yahoos definitely wanted to hurt Pence and would have tried if they had gotten chance, but itā€™s hard to believe that the Secret Service couldnā€™t have protected him

Pence seemed to believe not all the SS agents would've actually *protected* him rather than turn him over to the mob. I'm inclined to believe there maybe some truth to that.

by Anonymousreply 324June 17, 2022 2:54 PM

At least 95% of the crowd had no idea why they were even there. I think about 5% of the crowd would have inflicted damange on Pence and any Dems they found. However who knows what a mob will do when they're all fired up. That's why Trump should have acted to defuse the situation.

You had a mass of feral mouth-breathing troglodytes beating the shit out of cops, breaking windows, doors and hunting, and then there were the Oath Keeper/Proud Boy terrorists who had EVERY intention of killing elected officials - that's why they were already at the Capitol before that orange pile of shit even spoke.

Are you fucking kidding me that you think these people weren't there to kill? Mike Fanone said they were trying to get his gun and kill him with it when they were beating the shit out of him. One yelling "Kill him with his own gun!"

When you're in a sea of insanity like that, you are absolutely out for blood. There is no collective belief that we're not killing anyone. It became clear on Day 1 of the hearings (incl,. by the documentarian embedded with the Proud Boys) that the crowd was whipped up by Trump so that it could be the manpower helping the Proud Boys/Oath Keepers carry out their plans to attack.

Notably, the Proud Boys weren't at the Trump rally - they gathered at the Washington Monument and went to the Peace Circle on the west side of the Capitol.

R380 Well, we definitely need to all come to an agreement that political violence is unacceptable. This "language if the unheard" nonsense is killing the country.

by Anonymousreply 384June 18, 2022 5:12 PM

R384 Language OF the unheard. Ugh, I'll oh dear myself.

by Anonymousreply 385June 18, 2022 5:14 PM

R384 What we know is that the MAGA world not only ignores political violence, but it excuses or even approves of it for the "right" reasons. One of the two major parties wholly approving or excusing political violence. This is why we are in new territory... and many are projecting another civil war.

I wonder if the center-left will fight, or just allow the right to violently and illegal take power everywhere. I think that's a question without an answer yet.

I have some questions about the background in Eric Herschman's video. First of all, what's that art supposed to represent? Is that a giant panda looking over the horizon of a lake? WTF is that? And what are those silver things on the wall? They're not faucet fixtures are they? Is he in a bathroom? If so, why is there a little bat labelled JUSTICE hanging on the wall? What room is in he and what are these objects? I have seen some weird ass background decor, but this one really take the cake.

by Anonymousreply 390June 18, 2022 5:32 PM

R389, and I was 11-14yo when they were in power and even then, I knew he wasn't bright.

by Anonymousreply 391June 18, 2022 5:52 PM

R390, the things you find out when googling: "In addition to his colorful language, Herschmann gave his deposition in a room with a baseball bat hung on the wall and the word "JUSTICE" inscribed on it in bold, white letters. Observers also noted a large painting behind him of a panda, by the artist Rob Pruitt, is similar to one that appeared in the 2015 erotic drama "50 Shades of Grey."

R387 I think what we've learned, or need to learn, is that he will "campaign" on anything at all that is happening. Whatever is in the news will be spun to show how "they" are trying to do something bad.... China tariffs, Hunter Biden business, oil prices, mortgage rates, vaccines, school curriculum, gun regulations, women's health policies, baby formula, Ukraine military assistance, Biden bike riding or speech patterns, crypto-currency, union organizing, the price of coffee...

... breathing...

... none of it matters. "He will campaign on it" So, ignore him and do the right thing, no matter what.

by Anonymousreply 393June 18, 2022 6:01 PM

R390, here you go:

A person familiar with Herschmannā€™s art collection told POLITICO that the attorney is an avid art collector and sat on two contemporary art boards before joining the Trump White House. The three sculptures, created by Tal Frank, are a nod to his three older children.

The baseball bat, meanwhile, is the work of artist Sebastian Errazuriz. Herschmann received it as a gift from a friend after a successful trial, as a nod to the Scripture verse Deut. 16:20: ā€œJustice, justice you shall pursue.ā€ The batā€™s location above the sculptures has been a running joke in Herschmannā€™s large family about his parenting style.

The panda piece is by artist Rob Pruitt. The same image appeared in the film 50 Shades of Grey, according to Daily Beast politics editor Matt Fuller. The person familiar with Herschmannā€™s art collection said that he acquired the work of art long before the filmā€™s release.

Respondents to a Navigator Research poll released this week were asked ā€œDo you support or oppose the Department of Justice filing criminal charges against Donald Trump for his involvement with the attack on the Capitol on January 6th?ā€

The responses were overwhelmingly in support of charging Trump, with 54 percent support versus only 37 percent opposition.

It isn't a decoration unless you've taken steps to make sure it can't be used, like locking the knot or making the rope too short. You could also make the gallows so short that a grown man could be on his knees and still not choke hanging from the top. Live theater productions do this all the time, as do haunted houses.

by Anonymousreply 425June 19, 2022 3:40 PM

She's lying because she doesn't want her boss to think badly of her for running off to join the rally instead of showing up to work.

If anything, people like her hate Trump for loudly doing what she Bush tried to do quietly...

by Anonymousreply 430June 20, 2022 10:35 AM

Amazing, the dissembling about the threats made to Pence. OF COURSE the noose was only a symbol, street theater. OF COURSE the threat to Pence was real however. The Secret Service, who are professionals in assessing threat, wanted him out of there.

So here on DL and out in the world, this attack on a sitting Congress is fine and Trump's role in it is just "oh, that's just Trump, you know how he is.." (Texas Republican legislators pass "gay is an abnormal lifestyle choice", the election was a fraud. Oh they don't REALLY mean it, you know how they are.)

Yet, the weight of history will have some impact... if not in November 2022, eventually. Republicans of course will not respond to a poll question about the culpability of Trump. They like Trump because of his culpability.

IMHO, I don't think that many people understand the depth and severity of this matter. Too many think that an overthrow of our government is simply out of the realm of a possibility. It would probably take a lot of people waking up to a successful overthrow of the government and then realizing; "SHIT! WHAT HAPPENED?"

Trump's "hardly knowing Eastman" is meaningless.

Trump the deeply psychopathic narcissist "hardly knows" anyone, not his family (including children), not his most important employees/lawyers, and decidedly not himself. So no matter to whom he refers, Trump is eminently truthful.

I still am dismayed that, regardless of their oath and Bible, each witness tried their level best, by recounting and checking ballots and procedures, to accommodate Trump's ad hoc requests, because they wanted the Fascist to win. Even Raffensberger checked until he couldn't check anymore. So he knew there were no missing 11,800 Trump votes.

That is my understanding, anyway.

I agree. R479

by Anonymousreply 480June 21, 2022 7:27 PM

It was said long before the hearings started that they would be on during prime time. I wonder why that changed.

by Anonymousreply 481June 21, 2022 7:29 PM

R479 Frankly, the hearings are not for anyone who watches the whole thing. It's 1) to present evidence for history ad 2) produce soundbites for digital media.

by Anonymousreply 482June 21, 2022 7:29 PM

The hearings are in YouTube. I think people are watching it.

R486 And the Mormon guy crying about the God-inspired Constitution he will defend with his life. Powerful.

by Anonymousreply 487June 21, 2022 7:41 PM

On CBS on June 9, an episode of a program called ā€œYoung Sheldonā€ was preempted by the hearings. The network drew 3.24 million viewers, or about 600,000 fewer viewers than a rerun of ā€œYoung Sheldon,ā€ which was watched by 3.86 million the week before. And when compared to ā€œYoung Sheldonā€™sā€ last non-repeat on May 19, that drew 6.9 million viewers, or more than double the inaugural hearing on CBS.

When taken out of primetime, the 1/6 numbers almost completely cratered. Monday, June 13 saw an average of about 10 million viewers. By Day three on Thursday, the number of viewers dropped even further.

Thereā€™s a ā€œbeen there, done thatā€ feel to all of this. Donald Trump was already impeached over his rhetoric that helped fuel the Capitol riot 17 months ago. More importantly, unlike President Nixon during the Watergate hearings nearly 50 years ago, which 71 percent of the country tuned in for, Trump is no longer in office.

I said it in 2015 and I say it now: If you ever at any point supported Trump knowing he was a birther, bigot, racist, all-around ignoramus and scumbag, you are trash. I couldn't care less how much money, power, education or influence you have: You are a pile of shit without a conscience.

by Anonymousreply 489June 21, 2022 7:50 PM

And let me just add: That doesn't mean I expect you to be a Democrat who prays to Hillary or Biden. It means that you don't proactively hand power to someone as insidious, scummy and stupid as Trump. The man has always been ignorant, low-class filth.

by Anonymousreply 503June 21, 2022 11:46 PM

Insofar as there are official DataLounge threads about anything, both this thread and 3B are both official threads. It seemed like this thread was likely to get greyed out because the OP (according to other posters) was the person making the silly comments about how Pence wasn't actually at risk of harm, comments that were getting lots of ffs.

In the heat of the moment I thought it might have been intentional by the OP, to disappear the discussion. (In retrospect though I was probably wrong about that.) Intentional or not I didn't want the discussion disappeared and I linked back to this thread when I started that thread so people could find it even if it were greyed out.

The tenor of the two threads is different since there is not complete overlap in posters. People obviously are making their own judgements about that.

OP, I turn this thread back to you. I don't care who starts thread 4. I just don't want it greyed out.

by Anonymousreply 533June 23, 2022 4:45 PM

I have to say, while Trump was planning all of this practically in plain sight (having the Proud Boys over a week before 1/6), it's still kind of shocking the extent of the conspiracy. Being in the tank for Trump is one thing, but assuming they have the will to do so, DOJ could put Ron Johnson in prison for his role in election fraud. Clearly I shouldn't be, but it's still kind of shocking how far people were willing to go.

by Anonymousreply 534June 23, 2022 5:25 PM

Pardons!

by Anonymousreply 535June 23, 2022 7:15 PM

(CNN)Federal investigators on Wednesday conducted a search of the home of former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark, people briefed on the matter tell CNN.

Clark is the former DOJ lawyer who former President Donald Trump sought to install as attorney general in the days before the January 6 Capitol riot as top officials refused to go along with his vote fraud claims.

He was at the center of an effort by Trump to get the Justice Department to falsely claim there was enough voter fraud in Georgia and other states that he lost, in a last-minute bid to help sow doubt about Joe Biden's victory and pave the way for him to remain in power.

A spokesman for the US Attorney's Office in Washington confirmed that "there was law enforcement activity in the vicinity" of Clark's home but declined to comment on any particular person or activity.

Attorneys for Clark didn't respond to requests for comment.

In August 2021, Jeffrey Clark was named the Chief of Litigation and Director of Strategy for the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA), which describes itself as a nonpartisan, nonprofit civil rights organization whose goal is "to protect constitutional freedoms from violations by the Administrative State." The NCLA is mainly funded by the Charles Koch Foundation. The organization's current focus is opposition to vaccine mandates and other Covid-19-related regulations and orders. In October, after Clark received a congressional subpoena regarding his participation in the January 6 attack on the Capitol, his name disappeared from the NCLA site.

Look. In all 50 states there were Trump operatives, gradually taking contol of the state parties' operations. Some ran state GOP committees, state party people and activists. They helped organize the fake electors where needed. They helped organize and recuit people for Jan. 6th, Arranged transportation, housing, and raised money to send them. They coordinated with Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and militias. Roger Stone helped build a vast network of agitators. These are the same people who run political campaigns in those states. So we have to dismantle the infrastructure and that means decertify the RNC and cite them under RICO.

Watching the media "analysts" can be so frustating. Whatever else you want to say about those fucking members of Congess they, or more likely their staff knew they were violating the Constitution and breaking the Law. So the Pardon requests are not surprising. And they also know there is precedent. A number of members of Congress were expelled for not recognizing Lincoln, too. So the point is, they knew they were breaking the law , and that means they knew the claims were false about election fraud. And they were expecting to get busted for it. So I'm surprised the media is surprised about the pardon requests.

If you're looking to find something to be surprised about, it is the fact that no one has faced any consequences for what? 17-18 months? These membes expected repercussions and nothiing happened to them. There has been no urgency, no arrests, no consequences. You want to be "surprised?" That's worth looking at. Because we are in the mddle of a coup and by not acting decisively and with ugency we have allowed the bad guys to gain traction. And BTW: Now that we have been shown how truly complex and far reaching this conspiracy is, a good question to ask is , Who was advising Trump on all of this. Because he made it plain at least two years befoe the coup attempt, that he wanted to stay in office. So who was advising him, and planning this? IMO Roger Stone, Manafort, Steven Miller, Bannon, and others, yes, but they were being "encouraged" . My guess is that it was several someones but prominent among them was Miller, the white supremacist and Tump's closest adviser who is very good at hiding in plain sight.

Something is happening. The Feds seized John Eastman's phones last week but it is just now being reported;

John Eastman searched and had phone seized by federal agents last week, he says

(CNN)The FBI seized the phone of former President Donald Trump's election attorney John Eastman last week, according to a new court filing from the lawyer.

Eastman disclosed the search and seizure in federal court in a lawsuit that he filed in New Mexico on Monday, calling it improper.

About six federal investigators approached the right-wing lawyer in New Mexico when he was exiting a restaurant after dinner with his wife and a friend, according to the court filings. Agents were able to get access to Eastman's email accounts on his iPhone 12 Pro, the filings said.

Eastman is the latest person whose communications have become part of extensive Justice Department investigations related to January 6.

Eastman contends the agents "forced" him to unlock his phone. A seizure warrant document included in Eastman's filing noted any electronic devices agents seized were to be sent to Washington, DC, or the Justice Department inspector general's forensic lab in northern Virginia.

Eastman is asking a federal judge to force the Justice Department to return his property, destroy records it has obtained and block investigators from being allowed to access the phone.

The search and seizure occurred the same day that federal agents raided the home of Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department lawyer sympathetic to Trump's conspiracies of election fraud.

This story has been updated with additional details.

[quote]Anyone think that looking at Eastmanā€™s phone wasnā€™t to get Eastman, but just to corroborate other information gotten elsewhere that brings down a big fish?

To me, I think the committee is looking for evidence that most of us all know to be true. That is; Trump was directly involved and coordinated this whole mess. The USA has never brought charges against a US president for sedition, treason, or whatever else you want to call it. Therefore, the evidence must be conclusive, indisputable, irrefutable, and whatever else. Lizzy is going after Trump. The Eastman phone seizure

I just love how ahocked and outraged Eastman, Giuliani, etc are when the feds raid them or confiscate shit. Because to say they're "being investigated" it's all a lawyers game one side vs. the other in a court room or filing motions, and writing briefs. But when FBI Agents actually raid your house or snatch your phone, the physicality has to be jarring to these arrogant old farts. Today Rudy was sputtering angry because after examining video of his "assault" at the supermarket, the judge reduced the charges against Rudy's alleged assailant who c alled him a douchebag to his face. LOL! I can't wait until Mar A Lago is raided and Trump is standing there with his dick in his hand screaming at them.

So, it appears as if it will be Mark Meadows assistant who will be testifying today.

Former Meadows aide will testify before January 6 committee on Tuesday, sources say

(CNN)Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and a witness to many critical events and conversations, is expected to testify publicly on Tuesday before the select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Her planned appearance was first reported by Punchbowl News.

Hutchinson has already been interviewed by the committee behind closed doors and video clips from her deposition have been featured by the panel during earlier hearings. But her live testimony would mark a significant moment in the committee's series of hearings as Hutchinson has long been considered one of its most consequential witnesses due to her proximity to former President Donald Trump's then-White House chief of staff.

The appearance was hastily arranged on a week where no public activity had been anticipated and a public hearing was announced by the committee just 24 hours before it was set to begin. The rush to hold the hearing -- after the panel had said it would not hold any more until July -- underscores the importance of Hutchinson's expected live testimony.

Hutchinson has answered the panel's questions during three separate sessions and went over "new ground" with the committee last month, though it was not immediately clear what was discussed during that deposition.

During one hearing last week, the committee played a video clip of Hutchinson testifying that Meadows and former President Donald Trump's onetime attorney Rudy Giuliani were involved in early conversations about putting forward fake slates of electors -- a core tenet of the broader effort to overturn the 2020 election.

The panel has also played video of Hutchinson testifying that Rep. Scott Perry, a Pennsylvania Republican, wanted then-Justice Department lawyer Jeffrey Clark to take over the department -- connecting another key part of Trump's effort to upend Joe Biden's election win.

"He wanted Mr. Clark -- Mr. Jeff Clark -- to take over the Department of Justice," she said of Perry in a clip of her deposition that was played at a hearing last week. Hutchinson also named several Republican members of Congress who she said had inquired about pardons, either for themselves or others, in the lead-up to January 6, according to other video played by the committee during its hearings, including: Perry and Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Mo Brooks of Alabama, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Jim Jordan of Ohio and Louie Gohmert of Texas.

CNN has reported that during one of her interviews with the committee, Hutchinson said Trump had suggested to Meadows that he approved of the "hang Mike Pence" chants from rioters who stormed the US Capitol.

She also testified that Trump had complained about his then-vice president being hustled to safety while Trump supporters breached the Capitol, the sources previously told CNN. CNN previously reported that Hutchinson was likely to testify in person during one of the committee's upcoming hearings after she replaced her lawyer who had significant links to Trump, according to a source familiar with the matter She was not willing to risk getting a contempt of Congress charge in order to impede the probe, the source familiar said, and the change in representation was a sign that she was more willing to cooperate with the committee.

But they already had her on video.

^I just heard on "Morning Joe" that there have been a number of very credible threats against her and her life and thus the protection and secrecy.
