If OP is referring to "primetime" when non-members aren't permitted to post, that applies to everyone who's not a paying member and isn't a punishment for anyone in particular. If OP is a paying member and still isn't able to post at times, then that's a temporary ban applicable only to OP and based on some specific wrongdoing.

I had two recent timeouts because I used "BEARKING" in an OP and was F&Fed into oblivion

I only realized that was my infraction after the second timeout

Never heard of "time out". I think OP mean being banned and then having to sign back on again with a different ID (after deleting cookies), which takes a few weeks to be able to post again.

It happens to me frequently. One day, I'll be able to post several comments. The next day, I post one or two comments, then I'm timed out. I don't have permission to comment at this time, is the message I get. I don't think I said anything bad. It's weird. There's no rhyme or reason. I just wait it out until I can post again.

I was locked out once, while being a paying member, I contacted the webmaster by email by the time they got back to me, I was no longer locked out, less than 12 hours.

They told me that I might have been locked out because I lost my Karma for 48 hours but it wasn't even 12 hours. Since it was working fine then they were that interested in what went wrong.

You may have the problem that a number of authenticated users have talked about over the years...that you have a core group of people who don't like you and will automatically FF you when they see your name. It's why some of them post anonymously now.

Yeah I didn't have a named account until they started requiring you register with an Email address, when that started was when I named my account but I don't remember if it was required to register a name or optional.

I got a time out on of all things, after a flame war on a Russian figure skater thread—at least, I think I did. One of the poster was insulting other posters and I insulted them back using the same insult. We both were flamed I think.

I think that's primetime you're referring to. However, I've noticed that some threads remain "primetimed" so that only paying members can post. I think that's done manually by a mod, not automated.

Funny, but I just got timed out late this afternoon and it was right after I started a thread which has actually gotten a lot of good traffic so far. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. But I sent an email to complain and then a couple of hours ago I found I could post on any thread.

I think it's just a DL power thing.

Yep, I'm a paying member and have gotten a "karma points" time-out twice. Klan Grannies got me on the Markle threads. First time it was 12 hours, 2nd time 24 hours. Muriel's assistant is very nice and explained it all to me

In a way, I liked the old Television Without Pity boards. They would mess with people who engaged with each other and veered off the topic. You could say you disagreed with a poster and explain why, but you couldn’t describe the poster with any names (even racist).

Years ago, for like a period of six months I couldn’t post. Yet if I used the WiFi at the coffee shop down the street I could, or staying in a hotel somewhere. Just not using my home address.

I've been timed out a few times and unsure of exactly why. If we were given some sort of reason, it would prevent me from doing it again, right?

Not in a long, long time. When I started coming here at 21, it happened regularly. At almost 40, I do try to be more mindful of what I write.

I was suspended for 48 hours a few months ago. I'm not exactly sure why, but I suspect it was a comment supporting an MSNBC anchor that was getting a lot of shit.

With all due respect, 9 times out of 10, someone who says "I got banned but I didn't do anything wrong" has, in fact, done something wrong.

Unless you went after one of the trolls with four million sockpuppets and they wanted to get revenge on you, or you criticized Muriel and she happened to see it, there is almost certainly a reason why you got the time out.

Before the redesign, there were specific topic areas/people you could not say anything bad about. Much of that went away with the redesign--maybe we have new owners?

This is an interesting thread on the system behind being timed out.

Once you’ve been around here awhile, you realize most of it’s due to a prime-time algorithm, but there’s also a lot of FFing and Ignoring going on that triggers temporary banning as well, as many posters have already mentioned. You just never really know what will really rub people the wrong way.

A few years back, there was a cat-based thread and I posted a statistic that cat lovers don’t like to hear, and was timed-out for at least 24 hours less than 10 minutes after posting my comment.

I'm pretty sure if they weren't on a serious budget for bandwidth on their server, they'd go the Reddit route and just have posts with a lot of downvotes hidden/collapsed which lowers engagement with the post/comment.

I used to run a subreddit and one thing that did become irritating was "downvote brigading." If found out about it the hard way. This is basically when a user gets a lot of "haters" and they'll either create multiple accounts to downvote all of the user's posts, or it will literally be a group of different people coordinating the "attack." Granted, that's vote manipulation and against Reddit's TOS, most people couldn't care less.

We had a problem with a few trolls and the reports just became too much and I got annoyed (was running the sub by myself at the time). So, I created a script in Python using PRAW that triggered a temporary ban on users who received more than 20 downvotes. That...didn't go well, and was how I found out about brigading. I eventually killed that script and just reported the vote manipulation to Reddit admins. No idea if they ever did anything about it, though. This was a while ago.

Another time I was timed out was when I offended a Trumper frau who tsk, tsk'd my post about assassinating the shithead and threatened me with secret service.

If they went after everyone else who posted that, they'd work full time on just that.

We can't see how many FFs we've gotten, r85, I'm assuming because they don't want us to figure out how many FFs it would take to get someone banned.

Yes, Muriel has put me in the penalty box twice for about 36 hours each time. Both times were when I trolled people I believed were trolls. The names on my screen look red and there's a pink background behind my name in the "sign post as" line. They don't look orange or coral to me at all, especially compared to the orange FF buttons and eyeballs.
