"Defund the Police" is a misnomer. Nobody who advocates for police reform actually means to actually defund them. Poor choice of words. Besides, I thought you guys were nostalgic for the wild-west, anything-goes, danger-at-every-corner atmosphere of 1970s/80s NYC, as opposed to the the Disney World it has become.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 8, 2021 8:25 PM |
r9 is correct. The dregs of society come over from New Jersey on the Path train. If you go to the area at Christopher Street and the Hudson River on any night, you see large groups of black people playing music as loud as their speakers will let them. And Washington Square Park is quickly becoming a no-go zone. These are not residents of the West Village. Call me raciss if you must, but it's quite clear who is causing the trouble.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 8, 2021 8:31 PM |
R33 but disbanding the anti-crime unit was real and a mistake and looking at what's happening in Washington Scare Park this year and last summer's lootings and destruction the police have been seemingly ordered to stand back. And De Blasio doesn't see a need to hire more police though he had police protecting the BLM mural in front of Trump Tower 24/7.

Not too long ago a report of a gay man being assaulted would have led to outrage and a call for police to arrest the perpetrator ( s) and get justice for the gay community and the victim. Now, the source is questioned, other states are blamed, and the victim of the attack is all but forgotten under the weight of the blame game. How things have changed around here.

The crime is happening in all neighborhoods and is often described as 'random' or 'unprovoked' and since Adams who recently won the Democratic primary is actually talking about crime and police reform it seems voters i.e. New Yorkers see crime as a real concern. Hate Crimes Under Trump Surged Nearly 20 Percent Says FBI Report
BY DANIEL VILLARREAL ON 11/16/20 AT 7:57 PM EST
ate crimes have surged nearly 20 percent during the administration of President Donald Trump, according to a new FBI report on hate crime statistics. The report also shows that hate-motivated murders, largely committed by white supremacists, spiked to their highest number in 28 years.
The FBI's annual reports on hate crime statistics show that hate crimes have increased from 6,121 incidents in 2016 to 7,314 in 2019, a 19.49 percent increase.
Hate-motivated murders spiked to a total of 51 in 2019, the highest number in nearly 3 decades, according to an analysis of the FBI's data conducted by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism (CSHE) at California State University. The next-highest number of hate-motivated murders occurred in 2018 with 24 murders. The third-highest number occurred in 1993 and 1995, with 20 murders happening each of those years.
The 2019 tally of total hate crimes represents the highest level reported by the FBI in almost a decade. The second-highest annual total of hate crime incidents in the last decade occurred in 2010 with 7,699 incidents.
Of 2019's hate crimes, 57.6 percent were motivated by race, ethnicity or ancestry; 20.1 percent were motivated by religion; 16.7 percent were motivated by sexual orientation; 2.7 percent by gender identity; 2 percent by disability and 0.9 percent by gender.
These percentages all fall within 2 percent points of previous totals reported by the FBI over the last four years.
A majority of the hate crime incidents occurred in California, New York, Washington, New Jersey and Texas.

Hate crimes rose by 226 percent in counties where Trump hosted campaign rallies in 2016: study
BY ARIS FOLLEY - 03/23/19 07:45 PM EDT
United States counties where President Trump hosted a campaign rally in 2016 saw a 226 percent increase in reported hate crimes compared to similar counties that did not host one, an analysis released by The Washington Post has revealed.
The analysis, which was published on Friday, was conducted by Ayal Feinberg, a Ph.D. candidate in political science at the University of North Texas, and Regina Branton and Valerie Martinez-Ebers, two political science professors at the university.
They said their research sought to explain how some of Trump’s rhetoric "may encourage hate crimes."
The analysis examined whether there was a correlation between counties that held a Trump rally in 2016 and increased incidents of hate crimes in the months that followed such events.
"To test this, we aggregated hate-crime incident data and Trump rally data to the county level and then used statistical tools to estimate a rally’s impact," the three wrote.
"We included controls for factors such as the county’s crime rates, its number of active hate groups, its minority populations, its percentage with college educations, its location in the country and the month when the rallies occurred," they continued.
The study's authors said their findings revealed that counties that hosted one of Trump’s 275 campaign rallies in 2016 saw a 226 percent increase in reported hate crimes compared to comparable counties that didn’t host a rally.
"We examined this question, given that so many politicians and pundits accuse Trump of emboldening white nationalists," they said in The Washington Post.
They also said their analysis "cannot be certain" it was the president’s rhetoric at his campaign rallies that caused people to commit more hate crimes in the counties.
But the three said that suggestions this effect can "be explained through a plethora of faux hate crimes are at best unrealistic."
"In fact, this charge is frequently used as a political tool to dismiss concerns about hate crimes," they said. "Research shows it is far more likely that hate crime statistics are considerably lower because of underreporting."
"Additionally, it is hard to discount a 'Trump effect' when a considerable number of these reported hate crimes reference Trump," the group continued. "According to the [Anti-Defamation League’s] 2016 data, these incidents included vandalism, intimidation and assault."
The analysis also pointed to FBI data from 2017 that showed a 17 percent increase in reported hate crimes over 2016.
Democrats have long lambasted the president for emboldening white nationalism, claims Trump has strongly denied.
Shortly after a deadly gun attack at two mosques in New Zealand that left 50 people dead last week, Trump was asked whether he sees a rise in white nationalism.
"I don't really. I think it’s a small group of people that have very, very serious problems," he told reporters in the Oval Office. "If you look what happened in New Zealand, perhaps that’s the case. I don’t know enough about it yet."
Developments in that tragedy, including a manifesto believed to have belonged to the suspected shooter that said he supported Trump "as a symbol of renewed white identity," also have renewed debate about the president’s rhetoric and whether he is responsible for stoking white nationalism.

Nation’s deadliest domestic terrorist inspiring new generation of hate-filled ‘monsters,’ FBI records show
In several recent FBI investigations, the Oklahoma City bomber has appeared.
“A mass casualty event like the Oklahoma City bombing is … meant to provoke further violence," noted Kathleen Belew, a University of Chicago historian who has studied the development of modern white supremacy. "It’s meant to incite people, to awaken them to what people in this movement see as a state of emergency confronting the white race.”
The ABC News review of cases invoking McVeigh is part of “Homegrown Hate: The War Among Us,” an hour-long documentary premiering Tuesday on ABC News Live that examines white supremacy’s violent comeback.
A 'huge wake-up moment' in Charlottesville The FBI has said McVeigh was motivated by a desire to topple the U.S. government, but in a media interview before he was executed in June 2001, McVeigh also described members of the white power movement as his “brothers in arms.”
That era “was kind of the last time” that the nation focused on right-wing extremism, because the 9/11 attacks just a few months later diverted attention overseas, according to Elizabeth Neumann, the recently-departed head of threat prevention and security policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Radical forms of racism then largely remained “masked” for decades – until the presidential campaign of 2016 inflamed divisions inside America and hate crimes began to rise again, added Neumann, who has since spoken out against President Donald Trump since leaving his administration.
“For many of us,” she said, “a huge wakeup moment” came in August 2017, when a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, attracted white supremacists from across the country, who chanted racist slogans and clashed with counter-protesters, leaving one woman dead.

[quote] Vote for a Republican mayor for NYC. Dems have ruined it.
The fall of NC crime rates began under Democratic Mayor David Dinkins.
Violent crime in New York began falling three years before Giuliani took office in 1994, U.S. Justice Department records show. Property crime began falling four years before. The decline accelerated during his administration, but the "turnaround" he claims credit for started before him.
• New York was no anomaly, but was part of a trend that saw crime fall sharply nationwide in the 1990s, particularly in big cities. The city with the best record for reducing violent crime during this period? San Francisco.
• Independent studies generally have failed to link the tactics of the Giuliani administration with the large decrease in crime rates.
Rather, many criminologists believe the decline in New York, as in Chicago, San Diego, Miami and elsewhere, was the result of a complex mix of social and demographic changes, including a break in the crack cocaine epidemic, an improving economy, and increased prison terms for proven lawbreakers.
Better policing tactics and policies were likely part of it, experts say, but not to the extent Giuliani claims.
"Demographics have an awful lot to do with this, and these are very, very large social forces," said Jeffrey Fagan, co-director of the Center for Crime, Community and Law at the Columbia Law School in New York. "It's hard to imagine policing, no matter how smart and effective it is, giving the kind of leverage ... to move a macro force like crime."

White supremacists present the gravest terror threat to the United States, according to a draft report from the Department of Homeland Security.
Two later draft versions of the same document — all of which were reviewed by POLITICO — describe the threat from white supremacists in slightly different language. But all three drafts describe the threat from white supremacists as the deadliest domestic terror threat facing the U.S., listed above the immediate danger from foreign terrorist groups.
“Foreign terrorist organizations will continue to call for Homeland attacks but probably will remain constrained in their ability to direct such plots over the next year,” all three documents say.
Russia “probably will be the primary covert foreign influence actor and purveyor of disinformation and misinformation in the Homeland,” the documents also say.
Former acting DHS Sec. Kevin McAleenan last year directed the department to start producing annual homeland threat assessments. POLITICO reviewed three drafts of this year’s report — titled DHS’s State of the Homeland Threat Assessment 2020 — all of which were produced in August. Ben Wittes, the editor in chief of the national security site Lawfare, obtained the documents and shared them with POLITICO. The first such assessment has not been released publicly, and a DHS spokesperson declined to comment on “allegedly leaked documents,” and on when the document will be made public.
None of the drafts POLITICO reviewed referred to a threat from Antifa, the loose cohort of militant left-leaning agitators who senior Trump administration officials have described as domestic terrorists. Two of the drafts refer to extremists trying to exploit the “social grievances” driving lawful protests.

Also, the election of a very lefty City Council is the result of letting too many immigrants to steal votes and that Chicago is the nexus of all evil and the fact that it is right near Indiana which has the most lax gun laws in the nation is utterly meaningless, it's the Democrat's fault.

The hysteria that is being pushed by media about crime makes me laugh - but also makes me sad. People want easy answers. “More cops” will solve it. “Scare” these people into not committing crimes by making them sit and think deep thoughts about what life would be like to spend a long time in jail (because, you know, criminals are very rational, thoughtful, analytical types).
These are mostly crazy, damaged people from crazy, damaged childhoods. And drug addicts. The question is what to do to prevent this - not how much revenge can we get. The abortion/crime correlation is the perfect example. It has very little to do with police, insanely long prison sentences, maximizing incarceration. Tired of people reading biased, uninformed propaganda that serves as news for most today - and trying to find quick easy fixes.
Have lived in West Village 31 years. The idea that this “crime wave” is worse than it’s ever been is laughable BS. Yes, there are more mentally ill than there were 3 years ago. No it has absolutely no comparison to crime in the late 1980s/1990s - when people were flooding to to the West Village to gentrify because it was so much “safer”.
The reactionary politics of the internet age are herding us all towards an emotional mob rule rather than practical solutions to the complicated results of modern capitalism.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | July 9, 2021 4:15 PM |
Believe me, the blacks who are overwhelmingly committing these crimes have no interest in politics and couldn't tell the difference between a Democrat or a Republican. It's the sickness and rot of the culture within the black community that's causing all of these problems, and only they can fix it themselves.

The Nazi at R153 plays these stupid, transparent word games. The "national" in "national socialism" refers to the German nation. That is, free stuff from the Government was OK as long as it went to the right people (i.e. Germans) and not to the wrong people (Jews, Communists, foreigners, but mostly Jews).
Not sure how different this is from mainstream Republican policy, that is, government handouts are fine for approved subgroups - farmers, vets, old people, middle-class homeowners - but outgroups - blacks, city dwellers, immigrants - need to feel the full force of a police state.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | July 9, 2021 4:19 PM |

Hitler didn’t turn over any companies to the population to run, which would have been socialism.
So the tying of Socialism to Hitler is and has always been bullshit propaganda to promote capitalism

r195/198 this board is populated by gay men who live in cities. Gay men who have either been attacked ourselves or know others who have been attacked. The crime problem is escalating. We can't help it if the perps are black. Your ridiculous reaction is also part of the reason why things are not changing and criminals are not being held accountable.

As a gay man who has lived in the neighborhood in which he was attacked for decades, a lot of what is being written here is reactionary and is responding to news being propagated about an attack that is part of a wider effort to define the uptick in crime in the past 2 years as a reason to reinstate everything that “cleaned up” - aka, killed - our city and neighborhood. The crime of the 80s and 90s was worse - period. The reaction that is being promoted here - which is exactly what happened to elect Giuliani and start stop and frisk and give police free rein to arrest anybody for anything - is what killed the city I loved. Yell, scream and read the horrible news stories in your suburbs. I don’t want you “moderate” gay men policing my neighborhood. Worry about your own neighborhood - we are just fine in the West Village. Just like the gentrifierS who complained about all the “uptown kids” hanging out on Christopher St causing problems, if you want a pristine, safe, homogenous world move to Singapore.

R209 What killed the city I loved and lived in for 18 years (1988-2006) was the proliferation of corporate chains, over building with towering skyscrapers and hence over crowding, the expense, the end of nightlife with Splash, The Tunnel, The Roxy . . .all closing, Times Square becoming Disneyland, Broadway filled with juke-box musicals and film-stage adaptations for the tourists, the Adderall zombies on their phones, Citi Bikes . . .it was no longer unique or a place that cultivated art or artists.

So R306 is hoping that NYC will return to the way it was in 2019 when that potsmoking socialist was in charge? Then we can double the NYPD? In the meantime? What do we do? Gut schools? Hospitals? Pensions?

R308,
How about we cut the handout programs that are light years above what other cities give out. These programs are responsible for losers from all over the country coming to NYC for free food, shelter, healthcare and transportation. Let other cities provide for these people. We need a city filled with workers who contribute to society.
by Anonymous | reply 310 | July 12, 2021 7:15 PM |
Meanwhile, those of us who have to work for a living are forced to pay for these losers.
by Anonymous | reply 311 | July 12, 2021 7:19 PM |
I'm not sure where you live R310, but it's not America. There isn't a place in this country where the government is generous to the poor. It's certainly not NYC. If you look at budget numbers (which I know is hard! it's much easier to masturbate to the NY Post!), NYC spends most of its money on the police, prisons and schools. If you want more of the first two, you have to cut the other.
It's that simple.

65% of students in NYC the largest public school system in the country are on breakfast and lunch programs. All of this publicity about violence in NYC is counter-productive. The city relies on the tourist industry; it would collapse without it. However, tourists are hesitant to come, due to all of the adverse publicity in the media concerning assaults, shootings, etc. If no one publicized it, then they would think it was safe and would come on vacation. So what if they get mugged or killed? The city has their money. So, stop talking about crime. Stick to talk about Hitler.

Visitors from China have posted record visitor spending for three years in a row (2017-2019). In 2019, spending by these visitors totaled $3.3 billion. Each Chinese tourist spent an average of $3,000, almost 60 percent higher than the average for international visitors. From 2009 to 2019, tourists from China increased more than sevenfold, the strongest growth of any nation.2 The U.S. Department of Commerce agreement with China in December 2007 to facilitate more group leisure travel helped accelerate visitor growth. The share of international visitors from China to the U.S. more than quadrupled from 2007 to 2018

by Anonymous | reply 383 | July 13, 2021 10:12 PM |
The next great problem is upon the city. According to the Times:
"The hotel transfers are key to an all-fronts effort by the city to get homeless people out of hotels and off the streets and subway in Manhattan, the core of both business and tourism, as it struggles back from the economic devastation caused by the pandemic.
The measures also include frequent removals of encampments where homeless people stay and an expansion of the 311 system to let subway riders call in complaints about panhandlers and report the presence of homeless people so that outreach workers can come to them.
City officials say the moves out of hotels are necessary to lure workers and visitors back to Manhattan and are in the best interests of homeless people. Some City Council members and other local leaders have asked Mayor Bill de Blasio to help address what they say are threats to public safety posed by homeless people, several of whom have been charged this year in high-profile, vicious, random attacks in the streets and on the subway."
Good luck getting tourists. I guess there will be more violence.

NY is the home of rageaholics. Doesn't Alec Baldwin live there? For the DLers who disparage so many other cities and states that they never visited the Top 10 included Boulder, Co , Raleigh and Durham, NC and Naples, FL. See r347: he reuses forms of "never get laid" for at least the third time in this thread. He has used "need to get laid", "unfucked" and various versions of the same dozens of times in various threads.
brandonjoseph/FNY/r399 gets stuck on odd words. With you, it's "overreactive". With me, it was "fabulist". Pretty soon, he will claim that you and I are the same person, and begin calling us by female names for no apparent reason. You might be right about the drinking, or maybe he's sundowning. Definitely some form of mental illness.
He calls you "Gran" (another favorite ageist insult), even though, by his own account, he has to be in his late 50s/early 60s, at least. Most of his references are from 60s/70s tv shows and commercials. He claims to have hung out at Boy Bar, Tunnel, Pyramid, etc, and I believe him. I probably threw him out of Boy Bar.
For more of FNY's nonsense, reference my post at r334. Or the thread linked below, the 1st of 3 (that I know of) that he infested with over 200 posts. At nearly 100 posts here, this will likely be his 4th thread in which he has been responsible for well over 30% of the posts. Between 2 different devices, he has posted well over 20 times in less than 24 hours.

Angry resident crashes car through front of Bronx homeless hotel during crazed fight with staff
Investigators are searching for a woman accused of plowing her car into a hotel being used as a homeless shelter on Gerard Avenue.
Police tell News 12 that the driver of the vehicle got into an argument with management at the Ramada hotel before crashing her car through the lobby around 11 p.m. Monday.
The crash comes as the city halted moving about 8,000 homeless people from hotels back into shelters. The Legal Aid Society filed a lawsuit saying the move is illegal and inhumane.
