I do have a trace of sympathy for these petty small-minded male fraus, though. Many gay men want to be straight women, because that's how they feel on the inside. That's why there are so many frau-hating and transphobic threads initiated by gay men on this board. I do think that there's an element of misogyny to this.

Heterosexual people as a group are, obviously, the source of heterosupremacy. But, in social scientific research, straight men ALWAYS are far more likely to express greater bigotry toward gay men than straight women are.

Straight men, as a group, are unmistakably, unambiguously a much greater threat. When it comes to straight people, between the genders, straight men should properly be drawing the lionshare of antipathy from us.

The term was originally meant to refer to a specific type of woman, basically a "Karen," or Kate Gosselin type. It was derivative of "hausfrau" which was a term used relatively frequently in the 1990s, for a brief period of time.

There are a lot of Dataloungers who aren't able to differentiate between the words "frau" and "woman," so the "frau" meme quickly became just a generalized sexist insult. Trolls picked up on that and for years we've had threads about "frau infestations." I think the heyday of the "frau infestation" threads was roughly 2010 or so.

Adding to that is the problem of straight women coming here to talk about topics they can't talk about on their own boards. Websleuths ladies come here because they can't say racist stuff on their board or talk shit about the victim or spread rumors. Markle-hater and anti-transer ladies come here because it's anonymous and they can be as psychotic as they want; on other social media, they get banned constantly. Here, they can say crap that would probably get them investigated by the FBI, had they said it on Twitter.

Back when we had individual forums on DL, someone complained about all the lesbians, and soon we had a separate lesbian forum. That came across as pretty hostile. A lesbian regular started a forum called LAnon at that point and a lot of lesbians left DL.

At that point, we started getting threads claiming the LAnon owner was committing crimes against DLers, which wasn't likely, and DLers started to spit out "go back to LAnon, cunt" at anyone they didn't like. We had trolls who pretended to be lesbians from LAnon causing problems, very similar to the trolls we have today who pretend to be black women from LSA. If you do a Google search for a user named "FultonDyke" on datalounge . com, you'll see several examples of this still in the archives.

Even though I would bet almost no one here remembers any of that (because it was in about 2006 or so) you still occasionally see someone say "Go back to L-Chat, bitch" out of nowhere, in the same way they used to say "Go back to iVillage, frau."

If someone tries to start a congenial thread about lesbians, it will devolve almost immediately into hate. It just does. I don't think it does anyone on DL any good to sugarcoat that and pretend it doesn't happen.

The "fraubsession" on DL has nothing to do with with insane women who come here to post about Armie Hammer, Markle, Sam Heughan (Sp?) and the rest. Those aren't "fraus" they're insane obsessed fan gurls.

It has to do with effeminate middle aged gay men who share common interests with the middle-aged, middle-class, middle-American women they work with at somewhat low-level corporate jobs and are frequently lumped in with them socially--while the "men" discuss sports, the "fraus" are discussing the latest episode of Real Housewives.

There's definitely jealousy of having a husband to support them, while the male fraus are single, and a sense that the male frau would be a much better housewife in everything from decorating ("No Live Laugh Love posters!) to cooking ("My famous potato salad recipe")

As someone said upthread, many of them are unhappy and lonely and feel as if life had passed them by, hence the fraubession.

Well, to me, 'frau' has always been a term that I associated with a very judgmental type of woman - the kind of women I disdained in life because I couldn't understand their need to sit around in sewing circles and gossip about the slut who lived down the street trying to steal their men. It also felt like a celebration of all that they had, a need to rub it in as many people's noses as they could. I'm a straight woman, but I've always felt like an outsider, and I've been a 5 star hag since I was about 15, when most of my friends were gay boys. Hell, one of them even tried to take my virginity, lol. In my early 20s, I shared an apartment with 3 gay men, and every time I moved, I typically gravitated to the gay people in my work environment. That's just where I felt comfortable. Yes, gay men are judgmental, too, hence Datalounge's very existence, but what was fun was that the bitchiness was often so sharp and insightful and fucking funny, that it never felt like it was based out of fear, if that makes any sense. It was just that for people who were often pushed to the sidelines, we've become more observant, because there's no hyper-focus on keeping up with the joneses.

I came to DL about 13 years ago, back when the Prancing Ponies and their antics were a constant source of hilarity for everyone here. Admittedly, I came for the gossip, which used to be so great back then, and I stayed for the 'men presenting hole' threads, or the hot gifs I can stare at all day threads (btw, where did they go?). Also, because not only was it funny as fuck on here, when there would usually be a thread I would pee my pants laughing over every time I visited, but also a lot of great thoughts on politics, before the trolls ran amok.

I'll also admit that the fangurl threads on here give me the skeevies. Following their favorite actor obsessions by stalking them on twitter and IG is just creepy and I feel a sign of a greater ill in society.

Interestingly, I know a woman who checks many of DL's "frau" boxes. Her taste in art and music is solidly middle-brow. She likes doing "crafty" things with art supplies from Michaels. She likes the art of Thomas Kincaid and Bob Ross. She dresses "frau-ish". She is a Christian and certainly no great intellect (but solidly Democrat).

She is also one of the truly good people I've met in my life. She is genuinely humble and does try to be or pretend to be anything other than what she is. She is generous but not a pushover. She is patient and kind. I've never heard her complain at length, or nurse grudges or ill-will.
