Fox News has projected Biden won, but they are talking about all the moves Trump will take to block him in the courts and electoral college. The assholes.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 7, 2020 3:55 PM |
Trump refuses to concede after Biden declared president-elect Donald Trump is showing no signs of conceding, after Joe Biden was declared the winner of the US presidential election.
“We all know why Joe Biden is rushing to falsely pose as the winner, and why his media allies are trying so hard to help him: they don’t want the truth to be exposed. The simple fact is this election is far from over,” Trump said.
The simply fact is that this election is over. The final votes will continue to be counted in dozens of states, but there is no way for Trump to come back in the presidential race at this point.
“Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated,” Trump said.

Biden's 290 electoral votes to Trump's 214 is quite a comfortable margin. And let's not forget that it was the electoral college that won the election for Trump in 2016, with 304 well-placed electoral votes vs. Clinton's 227. He lost the popular vote to Clinton by nearly 3 million.

We all need to take the time to celebrate, do some self care, and be ready for the next fight. Because the next 2 months are going to be straight up DANGEROUS. Trump is going to loot, burn, and bomb everyfuckingthing and body as he's dragged out.
But, that we can worry about starting Monday. This weekend is nothing but fiesta!

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the result of the U.S. presidential election
November 7, 2020 Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the result of the U.S. presidential election:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their election as the next President and Vice President of the United States of America.
“Canada and the United States enjoy an extraordinary relationship – one that is unique on the world stage. Our shared geography, common interests, deep personal connections, and strong economic ties make us close friends, partners, and allies. We will further build on this foundation as we continue to keep our people safe and healthy from the impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and work to advance peace and inclusion, economic prosperity, and climate action around the world.
“I look forward to working with President-elect Biden, Vice President-elect Harris, their administration, and the United States Congress as we tackle the world’s greatest challenges together.”

[quote]And it's pretty clear what Fox News would look like under a Biden administration: giving airtime to potential Republican presidential hopefuls and attacking Joe and Hunter Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and young progressive House stars, including Rep. by Anonymous | reply 440 | November 7, 2020 7:05 PM |
I read one of the strikes against Katie Porter is she is white and it's tricky to appoint to a seat someone who isn't of colour to follow someone of colour. Nomination and election are different matters. Plus, Porter's district is still lean Republican. Nobody's keen to open the door to opportunity. Although you could argue that leans in Porter's favour... if they regard her as a long term asset and star they might protect her that way... really depends on how the party leadership and establishment sees her. I wouldn't think she is a strong best, esp,. if Karen Bass, who is so well regarded and was a VP potential, is suited to it.

Pete does not have the experience to be Chief of Staff. Full stop. Especially in a divided Congress, which this is more likely than not to be.
He would be wasted as press secretary. That's a terrible job for someone who wants a future in public life. The whole point of it is to avoid saying anything to get the president into trouble.
by Anonymous | reply 444 | November 7, 2020 7:08 PM |

Pete will continue to move up. He's in it for the long haul.

Here’s an interesting article from Der Spiegel. They say EU leaders think Biden will be tied up with a bunch of lawsuits and between that and the Congress, how much can Biden do?
I think the lawsuits will probably be cleared faster than people think. Trump doesn’t have any standing. Biden won in too many different states. Take any one away and he still wins. Then once they count the rest of California and some others, he’ll probably gain a million votes. I can’t see the Supreme Court going out of their way to change an election Biden won by about five million votes. They’d look like they were committing an open coup. We just have to wait until they finish counting the states and certify them.
I think Republicans didn’t realize how quickly Biden would be accepted by foreign leaders. It’s too late to try to reverse it now, it’s a done deal. The states all knew they were going to be challenged, they’re being extra careful not to give Trump legal grounds. Even Trumpers understand public opinion matters. It’s a losing proposition. The rank and file MAGAts may think screaming is going to change something, but it won’t change the legal cases. Trump can scream himself blue, but the Supreme Court can’t change an obvious large loss to a Trump win.
by Anonymous | reply 450 | November 7, 2020 7:13 PM |
Why would Pete be a fantastic Chief of Staff? Compare him to say, James Baker. Or Leon Panetta. Please. Make your case. I think a lot of Pete and 100% agree he's got a bright and long future in the party. But he's nowhere near qualified for the role of Chief of Staff.

Mind you, the clever way around that would be to find the bigger loser you could in the other party, like if it was Minnesota and they needed a Republican, bring Michelle Bachmann out of retirement.

UN would be good for Pete. Somebody smart is going to have to work very hard to bring our allies back around. They’re not going to just accept America isn’t insane after all. I’ve seen a lot of articles about other countries being appalled that Trump got so many votes. They see Biden as winning by a hair. I don’t think they realize so many votes are still outstanding and most will flip blue. A couple of weeks from now, it’s going to look a lot more in Biden’s favor.
Pete would also be good at the VA. Or something to do with the budget. Bill Clinton had Gore audit the budget and he was able to shave off a lot. That’s how he got rid of so much of the deficit, he put somebody in charge of that one thing who had some power. Pete would be great at doing that too.

As far as I can tell, this is only the fourth time in American history (and the first time in 132 years) where an incumbent president has received MORE votes in his re-election bid than he did in his winning election and yet still LOST.
John Quincy Adams in 1828 received 500,897 votes v 113,122 in 1824 when no candidate received a majority in the Electoral College and the election was decided in the House of Representatives) yet lost to Andrew Jackson
Martin Van Buren in 1840 received 1,128,854 votes v 764,176 in 1836 yet lost to William Henry Harrison
Grover Cleveland in 1888 received 5,534,488 votes in 1888 v 4,914,482 in 1884 yet lost to Benjamin Harrison

I don't care about your late apologies. If you CHOSE to work in that administration, your judgment and goals and empathy are proven to disqualify you from further participation in the public arena. No commenting gigs. No memoirs and speaking tours. No jobs at nonprofits. No runs for elected office. You are banned from American life. You befouled this country and enabled all the harm to it.
I don't care about your late apologies. If you CHOSE to support Orange and his grifter family and swamp network on your social media feed and at the ballot box, despite four years of documented lies and graft and destruction of everything this country held dear, America has no use for you. You rejected every logical warning laid out for you. You collaborated.
I'm demanding retribution. I don't think you should die. Unless you broke the law, I don't think you should got to prison. I don't think you should pay a fine or make restitution for all the harm you inflicted or helped to inflict or allowed to stand.

The Oval Office could be made ready for the new president in a matter of hours
Even if the results were delayed and the outgoing president couldn't move everything out of the residence, the outgoing president and their family could leave, and the new president and their family could stay at Blair House until the residence was ready.

R558 Seriously. Remember how long CBS were homeless because their offices were shut down for decontamination? And they weren't dealing with an historic building that was the site of a super-spreader event (maybe two!).

R548 Keep in mind that America doesn't have a civil service like ours. As we've seen with Trump, so many of the key roles in government are political appointees, whereas in Britain they'd be taken by civil servants (though Cummings is trying to change that). This means we can have swift change in the UK because the civil service maintains continuity.

R560 I think you'd have to change the U.S. Constitution to make the inaugural date in December as the transfer date is in January per that document. It's the election day that could be changed. And not sure people would want to think about voting in December/January, or even late November. Holidays and shopping, you know .. lol. That could be problematic.

I believe that's why there is a transition team in the first place using the time between the election and the inauguration to get over all the current matters, through briefings, the administration needs to pay close attention to. And as a previous poster pointed out there are plenty of holidays (Thanksgiving & Christmas) that give the transition team fewer working hours to accomplish their goal.

Indeed, R563, Northern Ireland was run by civil servants for three years while the Assembly was suspended. Not ideal as budgets weren’t agreed but it kept things running and also allowed abortion rights and equal marriage to be passed as the DUP couldn’t use the petition of concern to block it.

I'm not around the real hardcore rally attending types but I am around the 'economy' Trump supporters and their problem is that they have no competing value to money. None. They just want to accumulate more and more and more and this is how they define themselves and because of that they need to have a lower class that they can feel superior to. So they sneer about how those folks should learn to code while they accumulate and accumulate with no particular goal in mind. So a brutal dictator who gives them tax breaks while treating the lowest amongst us like shit suits them just fine. The younger ones intend to use their money to allow their kids to bypass those old inconveniences like study, hard work, responsibility, learning from failure and they fully expect that their kids should be 'leaders' because money. That's all. They don't teach these kids any values so they have little entitled bullies but sneer at poor kids who are working harder. I'm a hard core atheist but I still feel a real'lack' in the American suburbs. The lack of any real values. Just the embrace of money at all costs and screw him before he screws you ......so you can get money.

Values have always been a dog whistle for conservatives. Christian Conservatives' traditional values have always been about establishing a superior vs inferior hierarchy system where it's ok to mistreat inferiors and encourage discrimination against inferior minorities who get uppity and demand, God forbid, equal rights.

I agree that the Russians stirred the pot and caused some black people to stay away from Hillary. I believe she should have taken more time to speak to young people who where hurting from not not fathers in their lives because of Bill's harsh laws that singled out crack dealers from powder cocaine dealers. Instead both she and Bill got very defensive and would not admit that these laws ended up devastating our community. When Biden was hit by the same complaints early in his campaign he addressed these concerns and moved on. However, at least those who did not vote in 2016 saw the folly of their ways and did their duty this time.
