Why are politicians of both parties not restricting travelers from other countries entering the US? Limit Americans as the only ones allowed into the country and enact strict guidelines assessing people coming back like Taiwan is doing. Looks like they've got a stepwise system down pat judging by this PBS NewsHour report. They're screening, tracking to future follow-ups, and spraying passengers' luggage with disinfectants.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 6, 2020 9:59 PM |
Schools remain open in Taiwan with risk reduction measures like disinfecting shoes before entering school grounds, masks, hand washing and sanitizers. Teaching a population to be germaphobes IMO is always a good thing. In schools kids are educated on germs and infectious diseases plus made to watch the movie Contagion. The latter part is going too far, that's more like a punishment no one should be subjected to such bad screenplay and writing. Watch the video around the 1:13 mark there's an American teacher there who appears to be "family".

I also didn't like that that doctor talking about San Francisco flattening the curve said that Texas has flattened their curve, too, even though they started late. Texas is just getting started. That healthdata.org website is good to compare how things are trending but it's getting things wrong. Go check out specific states and compare the predictions for past days to the real numbers. Some of them are way off. Unless you think Louisiana peaked five days ago and are only going to have 200 more deaths total, when they already have over 500 and there are already 5000 cases in New Orleans alone.

I hope this makes people more aware of overpopulation and how it is contributing to the spread of these viruses in places where people are packed on top of each other like New York and many of the large cities across the country, not to mention other countries like China, India, and Japan. Humans are the plague, the virus is just taking advantage of our short-sightedness in filling every corner of the world with our masses. Next time, it might be worse and, one day, it will end us if we fail to learn anything.

BBC-After several weeks of volatile trading, stock markets have been rising this week. London’s FTSE 100 share index is up more than 2% on Tuesday, after a 3% rise on Monday, and other major European markets are showing similar increases. This follows big gains in US shares on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumping 7.7%. So why are shares rising? Analysts say it’s because there are signs that the spread of coronavirus might be starting to slow. “Investors are reacting to indications that lockdown measures in the UK, US and Europe are beginning to ‘flatten the curve’ of coronavirus infections and fatalities,” says Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell. However, he adds: “The market’s relief is only likely to last so long, and attention will soon turn to how countries intend to exit the current containment measures which have in effect hit the pause button on the global economy.”

Since I don’t watch the press conferences anymore I prefer Lying POTUS thread that has the same title whenever there is a new one. It was dishearteningly when Rump silenced DR Tony. I was only a fan of Princess Diana in the royal family but I fell in love with the Queen after her wonderful speech.
As for me.
I woke up 2 days with a sore throat and I was terrified. I also have body aches that I think are because of advanced middle age. The sore throat is gone.
I had a doctors appointment today and there was hardly anyone there. I knew they would take my temp and ask standard questions before I entered but I did learn that being tired was a symptom. I can’t watch a movie without falling asleep.
This is the third week mu job has paid me to stay at home. I waiting for some announcement I will be shocked if they pay us more.

BBC-More than 600 people have died of alcohol poisoning in Iran since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, a judicial spokesman has said. Another 3,000 people were still ill, he said, adding that people had been drinking unsafe alcohol in the mistaken hope it would protect them from the virus. A number of people responsible for illegally producing alcohol have been arrested, according to the spokesman.

Indeed, R171, you cannot outsmart the the damn virus. It is so clear that transmission is easily passed from one person to another. That should be apparent to anyone, considering how quickly the numbers have escalated in just the past four weeks. Stunning that those religious nut jobs think that they will all be immune from this. If they just imperiled their own health, that would be one thing (still completely irresponsible and a burden to the health care system). But they could acquire the virus at their religious service, be asymptomatic, and then pass it on to the grocery store clerk, the mail carrier, or someone they encounter anywhere. It is maddening, as is the response of the Repuke governors who allow these services to continue unabated.

For sure, we are only getting a glimpse of the scope of the problem around the world, even in the west. It's not just China. EVERYONE is under reporting their deaths to save face and for the sake of their economies. The truth will only come years later after careful analysis and studies
CNN-Jill Romann, the coroner in Douglas County, Colorado, was so desperate for coronavirus tests that she began calling hospitals in the middle of the night to avoid management, begging whoever was on duty for one or two test kits. Her total collection reached about 13 before the hospitals caught on and shut her down. She asked the state health department for help getting the tests needed to determine whether deaths were linked to the virus. But she said the agency told her it was not providing them to coroners because it was prioritizing the tests for the living. She hasn't been able to get the supplies she needs from private labs either. "If you die in my county, I will not know if you died of Covid-19," Romann said. "I will, however, be able to tell if you legally smoked pot." Other death investigators are equally frustrated and worried about coronavirus deaths being missed. A coroner in Wyoming, the only state that still hasn't reported any deaths due to the virus, said he seriously doubts its official death count, and told CNN he hasn't been able to test a number of suspected cases. And an Ohio coroner said she believes at least four deaths in her county have already been left uncounted. As the country battles a rapidly growing number of coronavirus infections, 13 coroners and medical examiners in nine states told CNN that they are struggling to acquire the supplies needed to test bodies arriving at their facilities for the disease.

Speaking of pot, THC from marijuana is known to suppress natural killer (NK) cells both in numbers and function, many studies show this. COVID-19 patients have been found to have very low levels of NK cells when they become acutely ill, which is to be expected because NK cells are lymphocytes that play critical role in our immune system. There are also studies that show people with low levels of NK cells or NK cell activity are prone to having more viral infections and dying prematurely from them. NK cells are activated in viral infections and they also patrol for precancerous/ cancerous cells, they degrade pathogen-infected cells or cancer cells before these cells do harm or multiply. Some people are born with genetic predisposition to low levels of or poor functioning NK cells. People don't usually get specifically tested for lymphocytes unless you're ill or being investigated for suspected health conditions.

An analysis by researchers at Harvard university has found that air pollution is linked to significantly higher rates of death in people with Covid-19, writes Damian Carrington, the Guardian’s environment editor.
The work shows that even a tiny, single-unit increase in particle pollution levels in the years before the pandemic is associated with a 15% increase in the death rate. The research, done in the US, calculates that slightly cleaner air in Manhattan in the past could have saved hundreds of lives.
Given the large differences in toxic air levels across countries, the research suggests people in polluted areas are far more likely to die from the coronavirus than those living in cleaner areas.
The scientists said dirty air was already known to increase the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome, which is extremely deadly and a cause of Covid-19-related deaths, as well as other respiratory and heart problems.

LOL R185 Research shows that chronic alcohol consumption inhibits NK cell activity and negatively affects NK cell release from the bone marrow. this is partly why alcoholics get sick more often from infectious diseases and certain types of cancer. The mechanism behind impaired cell-mediated and humoral immunity caused by alcohol consumption is still under study. Also, some studies wanted to find out whether all ethanol is the same or certain ones from different sources are less toxic. This linked study basically says the following: Don't chronically drink too much, and if you want to enjoy alcohol then choose wine over other types of alcoholic beverages; this is because we pumped some lab mice full of booze of differing varieties and found that wino mice had little or no change in NK cell activity when compared to water-drinking mice; caveat being these mice weren't dosed with binge drinking levels of alcohol and they weren't boozed up for long period of time as the study was over a short period.
So yeah I guess if you have to or want to drink (and who wouldn't right now), then you'd be better off choosing wine. The researchers theorized that wined at least contains tiny amounts of antioxidants that would mitigate some damage caused by alcohol.

In New York City, somewhere around 20-25 people die at home on a typical day. But according to City Council Member Mark Levine, who chairs the health committee, between 200 and 215 are dying at home every day at present. As Levine wrote on Twitter, only those “who are known to have a positive coronavirus test have the disease listed as the official cause on their death certificate.”
Gothamist reports that the city Medical Examiner’s office “is not testing dead bodies for COVID-19. Instead, they’re referring suspected cases to the city’s health department as ‘probable.’” And those “probable” COVID-19 deaths aren’t included in the tallies.

Reuters @Reuters · 5m Spain's coronavirus deaths tick up again to near 14,000
MADRID (Reuters) - Spain’s pace of coronavirus deaths ticked up for the first time in five days on Tuesday, with 743 people succumbing overnight, but there was still hope the national lockdown might be eased soon.
Tuesday’s toll from the health ministry compared to 637 deaths registered during the previous 24 hours, taking the total to 13,798, the second highest in the world after Italy.
Still, the proportional daily increase of 5.7% was about half that reported a week ago.
“It is normal to have some oscillations ... What matters is to see the trend and the cumulative data,” said Maria Jose Sierra, deputy chief of health emergencies, adding that latest data included some delayed notifications from the weekend.
Total cases rose to 140,510 - the highest in Europe and second in the world after the United States.
As officials worked on a plan to lift some of the tough restrictions in place that have shut down non-core firms, the Spanish unit of Germany’s Volkswagen said it may partially reopen a plant in Navarra region on April 20.
Employment rules for farms were eased to bring in temporarily up to 80,000 migrants and jobless people to cover a shortfall of foreign seasonal labourers. That, officials hope, will prevent food shortages and preserve Spain’s status as the European Union’s biggest exporter of fruit and vegetables.

R161 I'm also an introvert and I enjoy not being forced to do social activities.
The problem is I need my quota of physical contact. I usually get it from seeing my family every two weeks, but it's been a month and I'm starting to miss it. I can handle it for a couple more weeks, maybe a month, but eventually it will take a toll and I'll either get depressed or start taking drastic measures like kidnapping the neighbor's cat for company and cuddles.

I'm curious after seeing people still cramming into NYC subway trains, are NYC transportation authorities implementing new protocols for cleaning trains and stations? If so, do people actually see cleaners disinfecting those places? Just for comparison, for the past couple of months Taiwan has been disinfecting trains and stations every day multiple times a day, also interiors of taxicabs disinfected every 4 hours. The problem with loosening of social distance and more people back to work is that public transport like subway stations and trains are going to become a vehicle of transmission again.

1) “The work is preliminary and [bold]has not been peer-reviewed or published,[/bold] but in a report the scientists claim the findings may have “vital implications” for containing the pandemic.”
2) “The [bold]scientists have not analysed the droplets for their ability to carry coronavirus particles[/bold] but said they were sufficiently large to carry a variety of respiratory pathogens including the measles and influenza viruses.
“A damp homemade cloth face mask dramatically reduced droplet excretion, with none of the spoken words causing a droplet rise above the background,” the scientists said.

CNN-France’s total death toll due to coronavirus has surpassed 10,000 and it has recorded the largest daily increase in deaths — a total of 1,417 — according to France’s Health Ministry data published today. The total number of dead now stands at 10,328, including 7,091 people in hospitals and 3,237 in nursing homes. Jerome Salomon, director of the public health authority, said that France has not reached the peak of the epidemic yet. “We are not yet at the peak of the epidemic because every night there are a little more patients in the hospital and every night there are a little more patients to be treated in intensive care. We have reached a level never before seen in France. We are still only in the ascending phase of the epidemic, even if it is slowing down a little.”

r243, it totally depends on the state. That said, I have never, in my life, read about any state actually enforcing that. The truth is, no private employer *wants* involuntary employees. New York could suffer ‘near-record levels’ of pollen this year
Here’s extra reason to stay inside — seasonal allergies could be historically severe this year, experts warn.
With New Yorkers already suffering severe cabin fever, the next four months are “expected to see near-record levels” of tree, grass and then weed pollen, Accuweather’s Jack Boston told The Post.
“People who suffer allergies are not going to enjoy the summer a whole lot,” the senior meteorologist warned.
Sniffing and itchy eyes are already causing many sufferers to panic that they could instead have the coronavirus, with the World Health Organization saying that runny noses and sore throats are symptoms suffered by “some” with the contagion.
The allergies will then stretch most of the summer in New York — potentially ruining sufferers’ re-entry to the great outdoors once the lockdowns are over.
The rise in pollen levels isn’t just in the US, however — with British officials warning that the next few days will see the highest levels there since records began in 1951, according to The Sun.
Forecasts that they will reach “near-record levels” here do not come as a surprise for experts who say it follows an ongoing trend.
“In general, each pollen season has been increasingly worse than the previous season,” Melanie Carver of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America told The Post.
“Warmer temperatures are leading to prolonged allergy seasons for many locations.”
In New York, tree pollen is expected to reach a peak this month, followed by grass pollen worsening through July until weed pollen sees out the summer, Boston said.
“Nationwide, most areas are going to be above well above average this year,” meteorologist Boston said, with the whole eastern seaboard hit hardest.
“The New York City area is actually going to be one of the worst areas — well above average and probably near-record levels,” he warned.

I'm not mentioning Bezos because his paltry 100 million donation does not come close to the harm he's causing by not compensating his Amazon employees as they deserve to be, particularly at this time. Are there any NYC finance bigwigs who are putting up big money to help their city? Why are we funding a shill organization that benefits China and praises China? Let the Chinese be the WHO's only contributor, the rest of the world including US shouldn't pay at all. It's like you paying an inept surgeon who should have his license revoked operate on you.

r263, that's why I suggested a small rescue group. Big shelters are closed, but (in the US, at least) there really isn't anything a gov't can do to stop someone with a group who's fostering kitties in their own homes from allowing someone to come over and adopt one.
Regardless of what the laws might say, unless the police break up a house party or some other blatant public act of civil disobedience, there's really nothing they can do. It's not like any police dep't actually has the manpower to scrutinize random people on the street.
They sure as HELL aren't going to bother someone who has a cat in a carrier with them. Even IF they're "out looking for violations", he cop will see the carrier, and pretend he doesn't see you because the alternative would be too much work and hassle for him. And most places in the US have loopholes big enough to drive an 18-wheeler through.

CNN-Emergency physician Dr. Megan Ranney says she’s worried a number of factors could be leading to an undercount in the death toll related to the coronavirus pandemic. Ranney, an emergency physician at Lifespan/Brown University, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that people with acute conditions who usually fill her emergency department, like strokes or heart attacks, are not showing up. “I’m worrying that they’re dying at home or having severe illness that we would attribute to Covid-19,” Ranney said. In other cases, she said, people are dying at home from the coronavirus. And in still others, people coming to emergency rooms have trouble getting tested.Ranney said she also wonders whether fatalities were attributed to other health issues -- not accounting for the role coronavirus played. “We wonder how much of that preceded the reports of this past week. How many deaths were attributed to heart attacks, hypertension, diabetes, that were actually exacerbated by Covid-19,” she said.

CNN-President Donald Trump said he didn’t see the coronavirus warning memos written by his trade adviser Peter Navarro in January until a “day or two” ago, telling reporters Tuesday: “I didn’t see them. I didn’t look for them either.” A source familiar with the memo confirmed to CNN that Navarro fired off an internal memo in January warning the coronavirus could become a "full-blown pandemic," risking trillions of dollars in economic losses and the health of millions

Some journalist at the daily briefing just asked Dr. Fauci is he's concerned about COVID-19 deaths being disproportionately Black Americans in New Orleans and what he plans to do about it. Fauci rightly replied that he expects to see this everywhere not just in NO because of Black Americans disproportionately having underlying health conditions that lead to complications from acute illness such as COVID-19.

Ah, r273, yeah, that would def. make a difference. In the US, the various laws are all pretty toothless unless you're literally bending over backwards to openly and publicly challenge the police after loudly calling attention to yourself. The only thing the police can really do HERE is go to businesses that can't even slightly pretend to be "essential" & make them close.
Even then, they won't fuck with a sole proprietor who's hellbent on staying open... their main ammo is telling minimum-wage employees, "we're giving you an excuse to close the store & go home without risk of getting fired for cause, so you can collect unemployment that might actually be more than you get paid anyway." Most hellbent sole proprietors just put out a crate of slightly-overpriced "essential" items they know nobody will actually buy, regardless of what they normally selll, and use it as an excuse to remain open.
The city's new tactic to fight them is to prohibit signs from being lit up... anybody's signs. It doesn't affect Walmart or Home Depot, but makes "Joe's Pawn Shop" appear to be closed, even if it's open and technically selling shitty toilet paper for $2/roll as an excuse.

I got off work and decided to go grocery shopping. I work in a hospital, so I went home to shower and change, because I wouldn’t go in dirty scrubs. I can’t believe how few people I saw wearing any kind of mask or gloves. I know not everyone has access to masks, but any DIY cover is better than nothing. People were shopping with what looked like their entire families, talking on cell phones, blocking aisles to chat with other shoppers, and the worst was seeing two people cough without covering.
I felt less at risk at the hospital today, where I’m treating confirmed covid patients, because we’re still able to follow proper infection protocol. Most of the idiots I saw today probably won’t end up at my hospital, and if they do, they will be treated like everyone else, but it angers me that a good friend and people I work with have been infected, and they’re people who tried to take precautions. Sorry for the ranting DL. I can’t complain to my partner, because he feels guilty that I’m working long hours and having to run the errands. He has asthma, and I stress about infecting him through work, and there’s no way I want him near a grocery store. Screw personal liberty, right now I’m for officials cracking down on anyone not following basic guidelines.
R268: It's time to de-fund the WHO. The US taxpayers are the biggest contributors to the WHO, which as we know is controlled by China. Why are we funding a shill organization that benefits China and praises China? Let the Chinese be the WHO's only contributor, the rest of the world including US shouldn't pay at all.
Somebody reported today that the US has refused to pay anything to the pandemic prevention part of the WHO in the Trump years, or maybe it was the whole WHO? And I don’t “know” that China controls it. Why does the Right so frequently insist on telling the rest of us what we know?
But besides that, we should fund it because we are wealthy and it is an opportunity to contribute to a worthy charity, for humanitarian reasons.
Secondly, we might be surprised to learn that we might occasionally need them - for example, we would have had tests weeks ago if we accepted their tests, like most countries did.
Thirdly, we should support it for the same self-interested reasons that we all support public schools - to keep the needy from being so needy that they’re dangerous.
Fourthly, do we really want the Chinese to have exclusive use of the organization and the influence it has over other countries? No, we do not.
Lastly, it costs us peanuts. If you want to save money, cut the military or reverse Trump ‘s tax cut. The WHO funds aren’t even as big as a rounding error.

Antibody poz means you’ve been exposed to the virus but doesn’t reveal where you are in the process. Maybe you’ll get sick a week later, or maybe you’ve already healed.
Antigen neg means you were exposed, and killed the virus in your system. You cannot get sick from it and cannot transmit it. So, the goal is to be antigen negative.

I wonder if it having an effect on the blood's ability to transport oxygen more than the lungs ability to take it in. Once your heart stops getting oxygen, you're done. Maybe it's keeping the heme from releasing the oxygen or something weird like that. Or, blocking it from picking up the oxygen and carrying it in the first place. The asthma and COPD would be lung oxygenation issues. The heart and organ failure would be a blood oxygenation issue. Forcing air into the lungs in such an instance would slightly oxygenate the blood a bit by force but if there's something wrong with the blood's inability to take up that oxygen, it's not going to help much and will hurt the lung tissue.
It's going to be a long time before we know anything for sure. Malaria kills by destroying red blood cells that carry oxygen. They would have noticed drops in RBC counts but what if instead of destroying them, they were just damaging them and their ability to carry oxygen? I wonder how it affects people with anemia vs. people with asthma/COPD?

Health officials reported 1,175 new cases in the country, a 15.7% increase to bring Russia’s total number of cases to 8,672. It recorded 1,154 new cases on Tuesday and 954 on Monday. The majority of the cases are located in Moscow, where 12 million city residents have been told to stay at home until the end of April. Veronika Skvortsova, a senior Russian health official, said yesterday that Russia should expect to reach its peak for infections in the next 10-14 days, with the plateau lasting until mid-June.

Some skin lesions like nettle rash, red patches or frostbite could be symptoms of coronavirus.
In a press release, the Syndicat national des dermatologues-vénéréologues or National Union of Dermatologists and Venereologists says that some “skin lesions” could be symptoms of covid-19.
“A WhatsApp group of over 400 dermatologists (freelance and university hospital) organized by the SNDV has put forward skin lesions, associated with or without Covid signs” the press release reads. “There are acro symptoms, that is to say an aspect of pseudo-chilblains on the tips” such as fingers and toes, dermatologists say.
Another skin sign of covid-19, still according to the press release, “the sudden outbreak of persisting red patches sometimes painful and mild urticaria lesions.” Dermatologists add “The analysis of the many cases passed on to the SNDV shows that these signs can be related to covid-19”.
With these skin lesions, the National Union of Dermatologists and Venereologists wishes to raise the alarm on contagion risks, “because these signs are not accompanied by pulmonary signs, these patients are potentially contagious and are potentially carrying and spreading the virus without knowing they are. This is a very important sign our peers should know of” dermatologists write in the press release.
To limit risks, dermatologists wish people showing these signs to be tested. Dermatologists yet add these pseudo-frostbites can also have other causes and even in the spring season.

CNN-Spain has recorded its second consecutive daily increase in the number of deaths from coronavirus following a week-long decline, according to data from the Health Ministry released Wednesday. Figures show 757 people died in the past 24 hours, an increase from 743 deaths recorded the previous day. However it was only a 5.5% in relation to the total number of deaths, a slight slowdown compared to Tuesday’s 5.7% rise on the total.According to the Health Ministry 14,555 people have now died from the novel coronavirus in Spain. The number of active cases has also gone up from 83,504 to 84,111, an increase of 610, which is the lowest in nearly a month. Percentage-wise, there was a growth of 0.7% on Tuesday’s numbers, the lowest since the outbreak began.

Lingering doubts about the reported deaths in Spain.
Guardian- ...The latest figures come amid speculation that the actual number of Covid-19 deaths in Spain is much higher than official figures. Recently released data from judicial authorities in Madrid, for example, suggest that 6,600 more people than usual died in the last two weeks of March, compared with the official tally of 3,500 Covid-19 deaths in the region. When pressed, the health minister argued that Spain’s criteria ranks among the most stringent in Europe. “Everyone who tests positive and dies is counted as having died due to the coronavirus,” Illa told reporters. His explanation suggests that those who have died in elderly care homes and private residences – the vast majority of whom were not tested for the virus – are not included in the data.Spain’s justice ministry has responded by requesting judicial authorities to urgently send all records of burials and cremations that have taken place since emergency measures were imposed in mid-March, according to broadcaster Cadena Ser

Hi Perre R332. It is nice to see you. I hope all is well with you and yours. Antigens and antibodies are opposites. If you have high antibodies you are truly recovered. The surprise has been how long it takes to get to high antibody levels.
My perhaps faulty, lay understanding of one of the many reasons this is such a bear to treat is that a big chunk of people die from the disease (treatment goal strengthen the immune system) and another big chunk die of cytokine storm (treatment goal suppress the immune system.) I am guessing the dead cat bounce is cytokine storm. Maybe we will see mortality decline as hospitals start testing cytokine levels routinely.
That skin rash thing freaks me out. I had a red bumpy rash on both arms the week of March 8th. I didn't think much of it at the time. I have all kinds of skin issues and Crohn's can cause skin problems so whatever. But 5 people I was in contact with that week are ill, one in the hospital. Anyway I am feeling like maybe I was a typhoid Betty.

Novavax to start human trial for ‘ideal’ coronavirus vaccine candidate
The biotech company Novavax announced Wednesday that it has identified an “ideal” coronavirus vaccine candidate — and is set to launch the first clinical human trial in mid-May.
The candidate, NVX-CoV2373, proved its ability to produce immune responses and high levels of antibodies against COVID-19 in pre-clinical animal trials, the Gaithersburg, Maryland-based company announced.
“This is strong evidence that the vaccine created by Novavax has the potential to be highly immunogenic in humans which could lead to protection from COVID-19 and helping to control the spread of this disease,” Matthew Frieman, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said in the statement.
The “ideal vaccine candidate” was “selected from a number of constructs,” Dr. Gregory Glenn, President of Research and Development at Novavax, said in the statement.
The company is working with another Gaithersburg firm, Emergent BioSolutions, to help expedite the process of rolling out the vaccine.
The expected mid-May trial launch is “weeks ahead of schedule,” Stanley C. Erck, President and CEO, of Novavax, said in the statement.
Last month, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations awarded Novavax a $4 million investment to support its efforts, with additional funding discussions underway, according to the statement.
That initial funding — coupled with the candidate’s promising early results — “put us in position to have preliminary human data in July,” Glenn said.
“This progress demonstrates the ability of our recombinant nanoparticle technology to rapidly create vaccine candidates for emerging viruses like SARS-CoV-2,” Erck said. “In addition, the performance of NVX-CoV2373 in multiple preclinical studies and testing gives us increased confidence in its potential to protect against COVID-19 disease.”
But the company will need lots more funding — hundreds of millions of dollars — to get its program through regulatory approval, The Washington Business Journal reported.

A study in Shanghai found that a third of recovered patients had unexpectedly low antibodies. This causes concern about a possible reinfection risk.
Researchers in Shanghai hope to determine whether some recovered coronavirus patients have a higher risk of reinfection after finding surprisingly low levels of Covid-19 antibodies in a number of people discharged from hospital.
A team from Fudan University analysed blood samples from 175 patients discharged from the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre and found that nearly a third had unexpectedly low levels of antibodies.
In some cases, antibodies could not be detected at all.
“Whether these patients were at high risk of rebound or reinfection should be explored in further studies,” the team wrote in preliminary research released on Monday on Medrxiv.org, an online platform for preprint papers.
Although the study was preliminary and not peer-reviewed, it was the world’s first systematic examination of antibody levels in patients who had recovered from Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, the researchers said.
All of the patients had recently recovered from mild symptoms of the disease and most of those with low antibody levels were young. The researchers excluded patients who had been admitted to intensive care units because many of them already had antibodies from donated blood plasma.
Antibodies are generated by the immune system and have unique chemical structures to inhibit specific pathogens. The coronavirus antibody intercepts the spike protein on the viral envelope to prevent it from binding with human cells.
The researchers said they were surprised to find that the antibody “titer” value in about a third of the patients was less than 500, a level that might be too low to provide protection.
“About 30 per cent of patients failed to develop high titers of neutralising antibodies after Covid-19 infection. However, the disease duration of these patients compared to others was similar," they said.
by Anonymous | reply 375 | April 8, 2020 1:37 PM |
The team also found that antibody levels rose with age, with people in the 60-85 age group displaying more than three times the amount of antibodies as people in the 15-39 age group. The low amounts of antibodies could affect herd immunity, resistance to the disease among the general population to stop its spread.
“This is a clinical observation we made at the front line. What this will mean to herd immunity will require more data from other parts of the world,” Professor Huang Jinghe, the leader of the team, said on Tuesday.
Huang said 10 of the patients in the study had an antibody presence so low it could not even be detected in the laboratory.
These patients experienced typical Covid-19 symptoms including fever, chill and a cough, but might have beaten back the virus with other parts of the immune system such as T-cells or cytokines.
How they did this was still unclear.
“Vaccine developers may need to pay particular attention to these patients,” Huang said. If the real virus could not induce antibody response, the weakened version in the vaccine might not work in these patients either.
The researchers also found that the Covid-19 antibody could bind with a distantly related strain that caused an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) in 2003.
But the binding could not suppress Sars virus replication in cells, dashing hopes of developing a vaccine for two or even more coronavirus strains at once.
Many questions about the virus remain unanswered, including how the virus made the jump from animal to humans; why some people die from Covid-19 and others are asymptomatic; and why some recovered patients test positive again.
Professor Wang Chen, a senior scientific adviser to the central government, told state media on Monday that it was way too early to declare victory against the disease even in China, where the situation was under control for now.
“Who knows whether this will become something like a seasonal flu, or chronic disease like hepatitis B, or just vanish like Sars?” he was quoted in the official Science and Technology Daily.
“Up till now we still lack imagination [to tell].”

Anyway, at R382 I was trying to tell R381 that I guess he'll have to vote for Trump now, since Biden touched his face and is clearly not presidential, unlike the dude who stares at eclipses with unprotected eyes.

I have a couple of friends on the frontlines in hospitals in the NE U.S. (one is a nurse specializing in Infectious disease) and they both feel there may be something to the theories promulgated by the ER doctor ar r334. Many patients in their ICUs are not presenting as typical ARDS/pneumonia types either, same as in NYC and Europe. There may need to be changes in SOC guidelines as to how to treat the very ill - if ventilation is part of the problem rather than the cure, that's big deal requiring further examination.
The BCG vaccination theory may hold weight at well. Three European countries with very high COVID-19 infection and death rates, are three countries known to have not utilized or mandated BCG in their populations: Italy, Spain and Belgium. Worth a look.

Oh, fuck off, R385. That was not what I meant at all. The shit I’ve taken on this board for supporting Biden for more than a year would fill the space your brain should be.
It was meant more to be an observation about media than Joe, though I still think it was a bad look and created a pounce opportunity - see, old Joe Biden can’t even take care of himself.... Anderson Cooper coughed a couple times on CNN the other night and felt obliged to provide context and apologize for coughing into his hand on air and in the moment. Optics are sensitive and matter right now. Like when a fat stupid tool stares at an eclipse.
I am sorry if I put it badly. Or failed to clear the bar for remedial writing.

R377 - thanks for that. I check that site daily - it was 91,000 US deaths a week ago, 81,000 just 2 days ago, and now 60,415.
I'm desperate for some good news - I thought we may be seeing some light in NY and Spain, but then the death counts jump up. Sounds like there's going to be another bump due to how the virus can suddenly attack again on Days 10 and 11.
I want to think it is somewhat getting better, but complacency can be a real killer.

New York will allow all voters to cast absentee ballots for June 23 primary
All New Yorkers will be allowed to cast absentee ballots in the June 23 primary elections due to the coronavirus crisis, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday.
“I have seen lines of people on television voting in other states. This is totally nonsensical,” Cuomo said during his daily briefing in Albany.
“God bless them for having such diligence for their civic duty that they would go stand on a line to vote. But people shouldn’t have to make that choice.”
Cuomo said he would issue an executive order allowing any voter to obtain and cast an absentee ballot in the upcoming primary contests without meeting the legal requirements.
State law mandates that voters certify they’ll be “absent” on Election Day or provide other reasons why they can’t vote in person.
Acceptable excuses include “temporary or permanent illness or disability,” being the “primary care giver” of someone who’s sick or disabled, or being locked up in jail while facing indictment or serving time for a violation or misdemeanor conviction.
This year’s marquee primary race pits former Vice President Joe Biden against Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination to challenge President Trump in November.
Sanders, a self-described “democratic socialist,” suspended his struggling campaign on Wednesday, but said he’d remain on the ballot to “exert significant influence over the party platform.”

What's worse is it's going to lessen the urgency of the matter, to find a vaccine, to find a treatment, etc. And if you loosen the reins, it will be that much harder to tighten them when this blows up again and we still have no defense against it.

Boy, you really can't read, can you? It's irresponsible to print that without some sort of countering as to why it's a terrible idea. I understand it's happening, dear. But it's a monumentally bad idea and it puts other ideas into the heads of people in areas that are still under the pussyish soft lockdown we're under, but still chafes those who prize their "freedom" over their health and safety and that of others. So to not actually present the other side of the argument is indeed irresponsible.

I'll be 64 next month. I remember the stories my dad told me of being blown off his ship during "Pearl Harbor." I remember in elementary school the drills for ducking under the desk. I remember John F Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King being assassinated and the adults reaction. I've lived through the HIV/AIDS era, I've lived through 9/11. What we are experiencing now is unbelievable. Think about it. When was the last time you saw news networks devoting much of their time to a story. When was the last time, hint...never, have you seen stores close and products not being available.? When was the last time you thought the person you came in contact with could kill you? People are putting their lives on the line and dying because they are considered "essential" workers. Sorry, but the gallows humor here is not appreciated, at least by me. The bitching about someone's grammar or spelling is not appreciated, again not by me. Many people are scared and it is alright to admit you are scared. Just imagine waking up tomorrow and going to a job that might kill you. Be appreciative that you can work from home or there is aid coming to you if you lost your job. I hope everyone has someone they can lean on and depend on whether it is in person, on the phone or through emails. I'm faster than the fucking door. Goodnight.

Coronavirus might spread much quicker than health officials thought
The coronavirus might spread much more quickly than health officials initially believed, according to a new study.
The research, from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, found that people infected during the initial outbreak in Wuhan probably passed the virus to an average 5.7 others — more than double the 2 or 2.5 other people estimated by health officials and the World Health Organization.
Patients sick with the seasonal flu, by comparison, will on average infect another 1.3 people.
If the numbers are accurate and applicable elsewhere, the coronavirus pandemic could only be stopped by a widespread vaccination or built immunity for 82 percent of the population, according to the researchers, who reviewed Chinese data from the CDC, including mobile phone data that tracked the movement of patients leaving Wuhan.
“How contagious SARS-CoV-2 (the new coronavirus) is in other countries remains to be seen,” the researchers wrote in their study published in the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal.
“Given the rapid rate of spread as seen in current outbreaks in Europe, we need to be aware of the difficulty of controlling SARS-CoV-2 once it establishes sustained human-to-human transmission in a new population.”
The passing of the disease can be slowed, though, through the use of quarantines and social distancing, the scientists said, pointing to successes with outbreaks in South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore, among others.
“Our results suggest that a combination of control measures, including early and active surveillance, quarantine, and especially strong social distancing efforts, are needed to slow down or stop the spread of the virus,” the team said.
“If these measures are not implemented early and strongly, the virus has the potential to spread rapidly and infect a large fraction of the population, overwhelming healthcare systems.”

R517 That’s what is so scary about Coronavirus, how extremely transmissible it is. And that there is no treatment and no vaccine for it. The one thing that has prevented it being an even bigger catastrophe is its low level of lethality. If it ever mutates to more lethal strain humanity will be SCREWED.

All indications to scientists who are tracking the mutation of SARS-CoV-2 virus in real time is that it is a very slow mutating virus. It's been this way since they first started tracking it in late January. This link below is a short but informative read for those interested.
In healthcare/ medicine, we don't tend to use "lethality", I hear more researchers and clinicians use case fatality rate. Case fatality rate (CFR) is more apt term to describe what's more important. It's a measure of disease severity which can be used as prognosis (predicting course or outcome of disease). CFR may also assess efficacy of treatments, for instance decreased CFR while undergoing treatments. CFR are not constant because as just mentioned they can evolve with improved treatment or be subject to changes in available data that affects the overall data. In the case of a novel virus, we're going to get fluctuating CFR because we don't know with confidence the proportion or percentage of total population that are infected but had either no or very mild symptoms. Therefore, CFR may vary between subsets of populations and is influenced by a myriad of factors. These factors are related to environment, healthcare stability, quality of care, and health characteristics of population.

This video features a Japanese woman who's been living in Italy for the past 12 years and she provides some insights into possible reasons for Italy's high infection rates. I found it interesting that she says in Italy with their health system, you're assigned to one, centralized clinic where you're supposed to go and that's where all the sick people congregate. People don't have much choice in which clinic they're directed to go. Whereas in Japan patients have the choice of clinics and practices. Both nations have universal healthcare. I'd like to see the US not adopt the Italian system when we have universal healthcare which we should have years ago.

Why a second wave of infection in the summer or fall could be as bad as the first:
Herd immunity generally comes when some large percentage of the population — 50 to 70 percent, Moreau (a data modeler) estimates — has been exposed to the virus and acquired at least partial, temporary immunity to it. For now, the percentage of people who have had a SARS-CoV-2 infection is small, possibly in the low single digits.
Under projections by the influential Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, 97 percent of people in the United States will remain vulnerable to the coronavirus after this initial wave of infections subsides. For the virus, all those people are fertile territory. It’s possible, though far from scientifically confirmed, that the virus will follow a seasonal pattern, like influenza and like other coronaviruses that cause common colds. If so, it could come roaring back when cooler weather returns in the fall.

Guardian-Japan’s health ministry said Thursday that the country had more than 500 new cases for the first time on Wednesday, bringing the national total to 4,768 excluding hundreds from a cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo earlier this year. The continuous climb comes two days after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a state of emergency in Tokyo and six other hard-hit prefectures, while asking people to reduce at least 70% of human interactions. But many people were seen commuting to their offices Thursday morning in downtown Tokyo, as many Japanese companies are slow to allow remote-working for their employees, raising doubts over how effective measures can be under the state-of-emergency measures.

WP: German antibody study indicates fatality rate of 0.37 percent (The percent is lower than we've seen elsewhere because the study attempted to include asymptomatic carriers and not just people who went to the hospital for care.)
The study by researchers at the University of Bonn involves testing 1,000 individuals in the hard-hit district of Heinsberg in northwestern Germany in an attempt to ascertain the number of people who have been infected without realizing it.
Some 14 percent of the sample had antibodies for the disease, and an additional 2 percent had current infections. A death rate of 0.37 percent is well below the 3.4 percent case fatality rate cited by the World Health Organization last month and at the lower end of the 0.3 to 1 percent range that has been estimated by scientists.
So even a pandemic with that low a death rate in the entire population can cause so much death and panic and stress on medical services. Avian flu (which is currently difficult to transmit from person to person) has a mortality rate of around 60%.

The primary demographic of people who go on cruises: affluent, overwhelmingly white, and college educated. IMO, for the lack of a better term, they're the "upper crust" of deplorables. They've been convinced that the coronavirus hype is way overblown, and that the stats are fudged and liberals are trying to undermine their values and freedoms. Now, a few weeks later, a considerable amount of them are sick and many have died, all when they all thought they'd never be infected, let alone succumb to the disease. Per random anecdotes online, many of them are downplaying the effect that covid-19 is having on them. Some of them won't even acknowledge their loved ones died as a result of the disease.
I can't help but think that, like Hitler's SS, they've sold their souls, and nothing, absolutely nothing will ever change their minds. The virus could mutate into something deadlier than the Black Death, followed by a total collapse of the world's economy and financial systems, and they will proudly walk with their MAGA hats into the pall of the apocalypse without hesitation.

He reiterated the call from the city and state for widespread testing: "This has been the underlying challenge from day one and we've never had a satisfactory answer from the federal government. Not one single day since this began have I felt that the federal government has proven to us they are doing everything to get us the testing we need because if they had done it, we would be in an entirely different situation and bluntly, I'm not going to let bygones be bygones to say the least, but I can tell you we still need them to produce in a way they have not done because if we could get widespread testing it would start to change the entire strategy and allow us to do so much more."

In Belgium alone, there were 116 people who died in the hospital in the last 24 hrs and 167 people who died outside of the hospital. Sadly, just about every country is playing with their numbers now, to downplay, rationalise, undercut, etc., Don't believe everything you see and read. THIS is not over
Guardian-France has said the total death toll in hospitals and nursing homes has risen to 12,210, from 10,869 on Wednesday, Reuters is reporting. The number of confirmed cases in hospitals has increased to 86,334 today from 82,048 on Wednesday, while 30,767 are in hospital with the virus.

According to the CDC, in 2009-10 there were 12,469 deaths from the H1N1 epidemic, the response to which Trump called "a total disaster." I'm sure he'll have millions of excuses why COVID-19 surpassing this death toll (and wrecking the economy) is actually a big win for him.

Slightly off topic so I apologize. I recently watched the final season of Designated Survivor.
In the final season, a virus had been developed to target the Asian population. One of the first signs was a field full of dead cardinals. It only affected these birds because of pigmentation (if there is a thing in birds.)
It was startling considering I watched this between Feb 27 and the 29th. Now we have this going.

R585 - not at Richmond Bridge. I know that area - it's not exactly a tourist destination. Almost all locals.
WTF with the singer and the mic? He's drawing crowds. This would be shut down in most US cities. England get your shit together!

Yikes 10% death rate for UK?!?? Damn that’s scary.
R575 I find it odd feds are pulling testing out of Philly, even thought they are ramping up in cases. Reading Trump is pulling away fed support because so many of victims are poor minorities. Holding up and diverting supply chain for cleaning products too. The GOP needs to be destroyed for allowing Trump to infect us all.

Am I the only one who doesn't remember the H1N1/SARS virus being very bad? I had no idea 12,600 died in the US over the course of a year.
I remember people being alert about it, but I don't remember the US death numbers being as bad as they were?

No, R585, it’s locals. Brits are turning out to be more selfish cunts than Americans, which is why their death toll will end up being more shocking than the US when this runs its course. The government will have to propose stricter measures soon after the Bank Holiday weekend.

It’s clear the. Fits aren’t taking this seriously. At their peril. It’s not like they can’t see what has been ravaged

R578, it's not America's heartland. It's the fucking Midwest.
Wall Street is America's heartland.
