Most states, except 3, in the US don’t even have the tests.

The numbers reported are not accurate and you can expect for every ten reported there are ten to twenty unknown.

To 602 at the end of thread 6, younger deaths especially doctors could be due to cytokine storm.

by Anonymousreply 8February 25, 2020 10:05 PM

So Kuwait has a warm climate but they have 9 cases

by Anonymousreply 9February 25, 2020 10:09 PM

The doctors dying could be due to being overworked and lack of sleep. They were working long hours while sick and not given a chance to rest. I think if you get this you should take off work, take it serious and stay in bed, even if you need to take 2 weeks off.

I am back from vacation and have a few random updates.

My office building now has hand sanitizer by all of the elevator banks.

At least one major nyc hospital is no longer automatically providing masks for visitors due to supply change concern.

My pencil pusher CDC contact that volunteered to go to an airport and take temperatures is now volunteering at a quarantine site.

😷 CDC WARNING : NOT IF, BUT WHEN ........

Americans told to "prepare for the virus."

Trump says "it's under control" and "everything will work out fine."

by Anonymousreply 14February 25, 2020 10:38 PM

Trump won't ever take this seriously unless one of his children becomes a Corona victim.

by Anonymousreply 15February 25, 2020 10:42 PM

R10, standard quarantine for this virus is 14 days, so in theory everyone would get a couple of weeks off even if they’re not showing any symptoms at all. If anyone is diagnosed with Coronavirus, I sure hope they’re not going back to their job at McDonalds three days in, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of their bosses are screaming at them to come back to work or they’re fired, at least in the U.S. In the U.S., it’s voluntary to stay home so far, so in theory sick people could just walk out of their houses and expose people.

The Chinese doctors had to work until they dropped, that’s true, but most didn’t die from that. A lot of them were young, in their late twenties even. But the virus is so small it was going right through their protective gear. Last I heard there were thousands of exposed or sick doctors in China. Probably two or three thousand by now. Or more.

It’s interesting to see the perspective of somebody that hasn’t been keeping up. This is not the flu, it’s really hard to make vaccines for Corona viruses in general. When they made one for SARS a few years back, they gave it to two people and they died. I keep hearing every couple of days that somebody has the miracle cure for this, but actual CDC sources say even if they found it, it could take a year or more to manufacture it and get it distributed.

Right now, most states aren’t testing for it, so sick people could be walking around and we wouldn’t know. They’re finding all these sick people in other countries because they’re testing. And even then, there’s been a lot of false negatives.

There’s going to be a problem down the road when Trump is saying nothing to see here, move along, and people are filling up the hospitals. All he cares about is the economy, not public health, so he’ll want every store and airport open. What will his little Princess do if she can’t go to some international event and flash her barely covered boobs around?

by Anonymousreply 17February 25, 2020 10:43 PM

I'm not one to freakout over stuff like this, but I am somewhat concerned. If this virus really does break out and spread everywhere, and the mortality is really 2.3% as the Chinese are now saying ... I kind of don't even want to think about what that means.

by Anonymousreply 18February 25, 2020 10:46 PM

[quote]Trump won't ever take this seriously unless one of his children becomes a Corona victim.

by Anonymousreply 19February 25, 2020 10:46 PM

Who's the clown who says that the warm weather will kill the Corona because viruses don't like warm weather.

How comes know this ......... Was there a previous Corona outbreak that I somehow slept through?

by Anonymousreply 20February 25, 2020 10:47 PM

If we’re going by figures outside of China, it’s more. We know the Chinese have lied, they were rationing test kits, ran out, and fudged causes of death. But they welded people inside of their apartment buildings. What percentage does it have to be to do that? I wouldn’t think two or even three percent would be enough.

by Anonymousreply 21February 25, 2020 10:48 PM

[quote] You’re Likely to Get the Coronavirus

For realz? Each year the CDC estimates that from 3% to 10% of Americans are infected with the regular flu virus and show symptoms. Some even die. So the Coronavirus is so different from regular flu that you are "likely" to be infected. Likely would be what? 90% chance, unlike the regular flu?

More people would get the flu if there weren’t vaccines now.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think before vaccines about a third of the population would get seasonal flu each year.

This is MAYBE twice as infectious as the flu so maybe 60% of the population will get it.

2% of 60%

R20, regular flu is a cold weather disease. Flu season runs from about October through March. If this CoronaVirus does the same then the coming warm weather should help, but it's possible to catch the flu at any time of the year.

One of the articles I read 10% with heart disease die 7% with diabetes 6% for people with respiratory diseases like COPD die from this. And People over 80 are really vulnerable.

I'm stocking up tomorrow. Echoing, r18 the headlines are starting to get to me. The one city I always worried about was London. It's such a gateway to Europe, huge density, political instability in the sense of "transition" turmoil associated with ongoing Brexit issues. Horrible thought: Prince Philip dies or worse, the Queen suddenly dies and millions and millions want to publicly mourn. Any public figure is also "at risk". I wonder about the U.S. and all the handshaking being done by presidential candidates.

Chris Cuomo is talking about Trump claiming the vaccine is just around the corner, based on nothing. Now Trump is saying the Coronavirus will just go away. CDC says he’s full of it. So I guess Trump will find an excuse to fire that guy in the middle of an epidemic.

Maybe Jared Kushner can be the head of the CDC. After all, the qualifications in the Trump administration are to be totally unqualified in every way and be related to a Trump. Kushner is brilliantly qualified by that standard.

He had a guest post from epidemiologists a few days ago that was fairly reassuring about Australia, and terrifying about the rest of the world.

930,000 hospital beds in the United States.

That’s about one for every 350 people in the country.

Considering the intensive medical intervention required for some of these patients to survive, I do not believe that our government is telling us the truth.

The speed of the spread in Italy and South Korea should be a wake up call to everyone believing this will blow over in a few weeks.

At least , you are getting that economic downturn you have been wishing for.

by Anonymousreply 71February 26, 2020 2:15 AM

R66, this isn’t the flu. You can catch it with your eyes. That’s why nurses in China are wearing face shields and googles.

I think one of the risk factors for this is people assuming that this is just like the flu. It’s not just like the flu. It’s airborne, they’re telling people to stay at least six and a half feet away from other people, and the virus can survive for as much as nine days (or more) on a surface. That’s totally different from the flu. You have no way of knowing who touched something in the market a week ago.

Unless you wear a space suit every time you go out, you’re probably going to be exposed. This is the flu:

“Flu viruses capable of being transferred to hands and causing an infection can survive on hard surfaces for 24 hours. Infectious flu viruses can survive on tissues for only 15 minutes. Like cold viruses, infectious flu viruses survive for much shorter periods on the hands.

Summarizing the Atlantic article in R6, which is interesting, you should read it. It’s just long.

Everyone will get the virus. Containment will slow the spread, but not stop it.

Some people won’t have symptoms at all, yay! But that make it insidiously easy to spread. Oh. 😷

A vaccine will take 1-2 years, and may be too late for this outbreak.

This virus is probably with us for years, bad. We may need yearly shots for it, like the flu. Ok, not so bad.

Similar viruses do not cause longterm immunity, meaning you can get it again. They didn’t define “longterm”.

I think that’s the major points..

by Anonymousreply 87February 26, 2020 3:24 AM

R86 No - and last report is that they are both on the mend which is very good to hear.

by Anonymousreply 88February 26, 2020 3:28 AM

^ oh, the death rate seems to be 2%, which is huge. The flu is more like 0.1%.

The virus is very resilient. It doesn’t die naturally for weeks.

I wonder if this will depress the real estate market if people refuse to by a deceased person’s home?

by Anonymousreply 92February 26, 2020 3:39 AM

R92, I’m repeating the facts reported in the article.

by Anonymousreply 93February 26, 2020 3:49 AM

R87 Long term means for life. The existing coronaviruses that circulate around the world causing those annoying colds we get from time to time only give you immunity if you catch one from a few weeks to a couple of years at most. That is why we get cold throughout our lives even though that are I believe 4 circulating harmless viruses around.

The best hope for this virus is that is loses it edge and becomes like the others (i.e. annoying but harmless) - only time will tell.

by Anonymousreply 94February 26, 2020 3:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 100February 26, 2020 4:04 AM

R96 They likely died because

1) The were repeatably infected with the virus

2) The were working the arses off 18 to 20 hours a day, whilst unwell. That would have lowered there ability to fight off infection.

If you happen to get this (and it looks like most of us will) go straight to bed and get plenty of rest and sleep. Even if you have a mild case - don't take any chances.

by Anonymousreply 101February 26, 2020 4:05 AM

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but this really does seem fishy. Perhaps not biological warfare, but the BSL-4 lab in Wuhan was no doubt experimenting with coronaviruses. Given China's systematic ineptitude, the virus probably leaked (like SARS). The wet market was just an easy scapegoat.

by Anonymousreply 104February 26, 2020 4:18 AM

R96, more than just 2 doctors died...

The Times counted at least 18 reported deaths of medical workers involved in the COVID-19 response as of Monday, including nurses and doctors who died not because of infection but because of cardiac arrest or other ailments due to overwork and fatigue. One victim was hit by a car while taking temperatures on a highway.

The most recent were three doctors who died in one day, all infected with COVID-19. One of them, Xia Sisi, a gastroenterologist in Wuhan, was 29. Another physician, Peng Yinhua, also 29, died in Wuhan of infection on Feb. 20. He had delayed his Feb. 1 wedding, promising his pregnant fiancee they’d have the ceremony after the outbreak had passed.

Most of the infected medical workers are in Hubei, many of them part of the initial response in Wuhan, when shortages of protective gear, understaffed hospitals and transportation shutdowns collided with an overwhelming number of patients. The stories of doctors and nurses tell of clever improvisation and quiet perseverance in a war against a mysterious virus.

A doctor in Wuhan told The Times in a phone interview Jan. 29 that 12 out of 59 doctors in his hospital were showing symptoms of the virus, including lung infections — but continued to treat patients while wearing insufficient protective gear. Since then, he and other medical workers have been told to stop speaking to the press

The death of Wuhan front-line nurse Liu Fan, 49, is a diary of how cruel and ravenous the virus is.

Liu’s brother, Chang Kai, a film director, wrote a final letter describing what had happened to his family. All four members were infected with the virus after being quarantined at home in close quarters. Unable to get a hospital bed amid Wuhan’s shortage, Chang’s father died at home Feb. 3. His mother died Feb. 8.

Addressing his son in London, Chang’s letter reads: “I went to hospitals begging and weeping, but I am too low and insignificant.... All my life I’ve been a faithful son, a responsible father, a loving husband, an honest person. Farewell! To those I love and those who love me.”

Chang died on Feb. 14; Liu hours later.

There are also deaths from overwork. They include Song Yingjie, a 28-year-old pharmacist, who was single-handedly managing his hospital’s medicine prescriptions, then checking temperatures at a highway stop at night. He worked until midnight on Feb. 2, standing on the roadside in freezing wind, according to a colleague who was with him. It was his 10th consecutive day on the virus response team. He was found dead in his hospital dormitory the next afternoon. The cause was cardiac arrest from exhaustion.

Another was Wang Tucheng, 37, a doctor in Henan’s Xinwangzhuang village who was found dead on Feb. 10 in his clinic. His diagnosis was also cardiac arrest due to overwork and fatigue.

In Nanjing, Xu Hui, leader of a hospital’s virus control group, worked for 18 days straight, then went home after a meeting on Feb. 6, “lay down and never got up,” according to state media. She was 51.

Exhaustion is one reason medical workers have high vulnerability to infection, said John Nicholls, a Hong Kong University pathologist who worked on the 2003 SARS outbreak (he never saw deaths from overwork during the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome, though). Others include lack of training in personal protective equipment, contaminated surfaces, close contact with sick patients, and — perhaps most pertinent to China’s situation — people operating outside their area of expertise.

When SARS broke out, doctors from different departments were asked to join the front lines, Nicholls said. But many medical workers weren’t properly trained for procedures such as intubation in a high-risk infectious disease environment.

In a crisis situation without proper training, medics rushing to the front then easily became infected, and spread infections to others. Nicholls sees a similar pattern in COVID-19.

Hence the question: what's your red line number?

Do you stop going out to public places and gatherings when there's ten confirmed cases in your community, or is your red line number 50 cases? Or is it 100?

For many people, even a handful of cases will be a tremendous shock because they were unrealistically confident that it can't happen here. The realization that the virus is active locally and can be spread by people who don't have any symptoms shatters the comfortable complacency and introduces a chilling reality: what was an abstraction is now real.

Human psychology is exquisitely attuned to risk once it moves from abstraction to reality. Why take a chance unless absolutely necessary? For many people, the first handful of local cases will be enough to cancel all exposure to optional public gatherings: cafes, bistros, theaters, concerts, etc. Many others will decide to forego public transit, taxis and Uber/Lyft rides because who knows if the previous fare was an asymptomatic carrier?

If you doubt this impulse to over-reaction once abstraction gives way to reality, look at how quickly market shelves are stripped in virus-affected areas. Once we understand what rationalists might declare over-reaction is merely prudence when faced with difficult-to-assess dangers, we realize that there's a bubble not just in the stock market and Big Tech but in complacency.

US soldier in South Korea first serviceman to test positive for coronavirus

An American soldier based in South Korea has tested positive for coronavirus — the first US service member to be infected by the rapidly spreading deadly virus, officials announced Tuesday.

An American soldier based in South Korea has tested positive for coronavirus — the first US service member to be infected by the rapidly spreading deadly virus, officials announced Tuesday.

The patient is quarantined at his off-base home, officials said. On Monday, he visited another nearby US military base, Camp Walker.

“Health officials are actively conducting contact tracing to determine whether any others may have been exposed,” USFK said.

Coronavirus cases in South Korea have skyrocketed since the first case was reported in the nation one week ago.

As of Tuesday, over 1,000 cases and 12 deaths have been reported in the short span.

The Chinese mouthpiece media has all but admitted that failures at the lab directly contributed to this virus. They don’t explicitly say so, but coupled with the extreme language used by the CCCP castigating the Wuhan lab officials and staff, it’s not hard to infer that China is “saving face”- Admitting, tacitly, that failures within one of their labs may have killed a few million people, but that it was not for nefarious purposes, merely accidental. The pressure on the politburo is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced.

Public protests in China are almost unheard of, but the rage surrounding the disinformation and lack of preparation has threatened social stability. Unless they bring this under control within the next two weeks, the leader ship of the country will be purged.

It is a corollary to Occam’s Razor called Hanlon’s Razor- Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explain by incompetence.

Health officials say US needs 270M more face masks to battle coronavirus

US health officials said they’ll need an additional 270 million face masks to fight the deadly new coronavirus outbreak — as they asked Congress to greenlight a $2.5 billion funding plan.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Tuesday the country has a stockpile of 30 million N95 surgical masks, but that 300 million would be needed to protect health workers in an outbreak.

“This is an unprecedented, potentially severe health challenge globally,” Azar said before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee.

The White House budget office said the $2.5 billion response plan would be used to develop a vaccine, as well as for protective equipment and response measures.

Senators from both parties were skeptical that the White House’s request was enough to help prepare the country for a pandemic.

“If you low-ball something like this, you’ll pay for it later,” said Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala, the chair of the Appropriations Committee.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash, said the government’s handling of the outbreak has been “unacceptable.”

“We cannot afford to plan on the cheap or at the last minute,” she said.

Azar defended the administration’s response, noting that nearly two months after the first alarms were sounded, there’s no evidence the virus has spread in the US beyond people who were infected overseas and some of their relatives.

“We cannot hermetically seal off the United States to a virus and we need to be realistic about that,” he said.

A Massachusetts biotech firm has completed a potential coronavirus vaccine and released it to federal health officials for human testing, according to officials and a new report.

Moderna, Inc., of Cambridge, announced on Monday that it released its first batch of mRNA-1273 to treat humans for the virus.

Vials have been shipped to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Md. The experimental vaccine will now be tested in humans, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The institute will begin a clinical trial of about 20 to 25 healthy volunteers by the end of April to determine whether two doses of the shot are safe and induce an immune response likely to safeguard participants from infection, NIAID director Anthony Fauci told the Journal.

Initial results could be released by July or August.

It has yet to be determined whether the Moderna batch will work, because its gene-based technology has yet to yield an approved human vaccine, Fauci said. Even if the first study is positive, the vaccine may not be readily available until next year, pending further studies and regulatory clearance, the doctor said.

But Fauci told the Journal that even if the spread of coronavirus lessens during the warmer months, it could come back in full force next winter like the flu.

“The only way you can completely suppress an emerging infectious disease is with a vaccine,” he told the paper. “If you want to really get it quickly, you’re using technologies that are not as time-honored as the standard, what I call antiquated, way of doing it.”

In a statement, Juan Andres, Moderna’s chief technical operations and quality officer, thanked the company’s team “for their extraordinary effort in responding to this global health emergency with record speed.”

“The collaboration across Moderna, with NIAID, and with [the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation] has allowed us to deliver a clinical batch in 42 days from sequence identification,” he said. “This would not have been possible without our Norwood manufacturing site, which uses leading-edge technology to enable flexible operations and ensure high quality standards are met for clinical-grade material.”

The global coronavirus death toll has risen to more than 2,700 — most of the cases in mainland China. The total number of infections worldwide stands at more than 80,000.

cnn-Chevron tells employees at London office to work from home as worker is tested for coronavirus

Chevron told workers at its London office to work from home yesterday after an employee experiencing flu-like symptoms was tested for coronavirus, a person familiar with the matter told CNN Business.

As a cautionary measure, employees at the office, located in London's Canary Wharf business hub, have been told to work remotely until test results are known, the person said. There is no known coronavirus outbreak in the office.

The Westferry Circus office is home to several hundred Chevron employees, including commodity traders, shipping experts and lawyers.

"Chevron continues to monitor the situation very closely, utilizing the guidance of international and local health authorities," the company said in a statement. "Our primary concern is the health and safety of our employees and we are taking precautionary measures to reduce their risk of exposure."

Dollars to doughnuts -

I believe the number of cases in the USA, unconnected to any current person currently diagnosed or quarantined, will be over 50 by the end of next week.

I don’t even want to imagine the numbers that will be directly connected to current coronavirus victims in the USA, since they will probably already be under observation and self quarantine.

Is the number of people infected, excluding China, continues on the ominous algebraic path it is currently wandering, we will know that China has been lying for a month and that fatality statistics will have to be drastically revised upward.

The speed of transmission inside Italy, South Korea, and the cruise ship, when taken together, paint a far different picture from the data provided by the Chinese CDC.

The next few days might mean the difference between panic inducing pandemic and really deadly virus that mostly kills old sick people. Children and young adults seem immune.

I mean people under 20.

If the statistics from Wuhan are correct, only 0.01% of people under 20 died, no infants, and all kids had comorbidities.

I don’t believe the statistics, but it does appear that younger people are less susceptible to a degree of illness requiring intensive medical care.

I’m just trying to be optimistic where I can.

The rest of this thing looks like a total shit show. Unless we can dramatically slow infection inside the United States, it will quickly overwhelm healthcare facilities, and the majority of deaths will be due to lack of adequate care.

(I believe that there are MANY undetected infections inside the United States that will manifest over the next 10 days)

The main problem if it spreads isn’t that it’s the world’s most deadly virus, which it isn’t, but that there just aren’t enough hospital beds to handle a widespread illness. And in the U.S., the whole society is geared against people taking time off work and going to the doctor. Right to work laws say you can be fired at any time for any reason, even if you take time off for being sick, lots of uninsured low-income people, especially food service, maids and janitorial service people, retail cashiers, etc. Lots of people don’t have sick leave benefits, if they don’t work they don’t get paid. Lots of part-timers that aren’t insured, lots of those jobs are retail workers with constant exposure to the public. Most service industry workers have no way to take their work home.

And right now in the U.S. people are being “voluntarily” quarantined that were exposed to others that have the virus. Who can afford to be quarantined these days for two weeks, use up all your sick pay for the year and have none left, and then on top of it maybe get the virus and need more time off as well? There’s zero incentive to stay home.

I read that people that were voluntarily quarantined were given a pamphlet and pretty much left to figure it out on their own. A lot of those people have family living with them, and they’re living in housing too small to avoid others.

Trump’s answer to this is to say that the virus will just go away on its own, without him having to do anything. He’s too dumb to even understand what’s happening. And the CDC is gutted out from people leaving during his administration and not being replaced. Some of the articles I’ve read are obviously not accounting for that and don’t acknowledge that we don’t have Obama-era levels of public health employees. They’re pretending the mass exodus for the door never happened.

by Anonymousreply 123February 26, 2020 5:12 AM

There are people trying to minimize the threat. This is from the Washington Post, an interview of a doctor/investment advisor about the affect of the virus on the stock market. (Feb 25, 2020)

[quote] Steven Podnos is a fee-only investment adviser based in Florida who also happens to be a critical care doctor in the Air Force Reserve.

[quote] “As a physician, the coronavirus looks no more virulent than influenza, so the impact is likely to be temporary and of little long-term concern,” he told me....

[quote]“If you look at infections outside of China, the mortality looks very, very low,” Podnos said. “And the people who are dying tend to be the old and immuno-suppressed or otherwise sick.”

I don't think this guy is an expert on the current virus, but the Washington Post allowed this to go out with nobody condradicting him in this article. The article, however, was all about how to react investment-wise to the current virus news.

R121 This is R119 You are correct, though I think one or two teenagers may be died in China. But the under 20's mortality rates are lower than the yearly flu.

Its worth noting that the high death count in Italy is probably due to the fact that they have a large ageing population. Most younger people have left the small towns and villages. I think the youngest person to die in Italy has been 78. Most have been in the 80s.

South Korea had a person in the 30s just die for the virus. However, he was a Mongolian national. Don't know if he had any underlying conditions.

Just one bit of 'good' news is that Singapore whose cases were rising the other week seem to have stabilised. Of course being a very small country and highly organised they have been able to track everything.

Getting back to the bad news I also read that Italy is still trying to trace patient zero and suspect that its somebody travelling around the country as other cases have been confirmed in other parts of the country.

This whole thing is like a bad nightmare being played out in slow motion.

by Anonymousreply 128February 26, 2020 5:26 AM

R120

It’s probably a low risk this weekend, depending on your luck.

Even if there is an outbreak, it will still remain safe for a few days if it’s small.

I’ve been trying to remain skeptical for the last month. I’ve looked at the worst case scenarios from the beginning, in order to gauge their potential. Until the speed of the outbreak in Italy and South Korea, I was becoming more optimistic.

The last 4 days have broken any chance we had at containing this to Southeast Asia.

In order to slow the spread of infection, giving various cities time to ramp up ad hoc medical facility space, county wide quarantines will be necessary.

Interstate travel must be strictly controlled, and checkpoints at intersections out of many cities will be necessary. The government will authorize large cash payments to individuals to offset job losses and prevent starvation.

Urban cores will devolve into chaos. I don’t believe that there is any possible way to safely import and distribute enough food without widespread violence. The ultra wealthy will be in Wyoming. The “brave” fraction of the top 10% will be able to survive inside the city for a period of time, but the vast majority that can pay to escape will do so. They will take all their real valuables with them and drive for refuge.

Mass migration to quarantine areas outside uninfected areas will overwhelm resources in these second and third tier cities.

People in rural areas will keep outsiders away, and use quarantined proxy workers to bring food for markets.

That’s the worst case scenario I can see unfolding over the next two months. The best case scenario isn’t a hell of a lot better.

CNN-Italian officials try to calm fears as cases spike

The cases are heavily concentrated in the region of Lombardy where 212 infections have been confirmed. Around 100,000 people in Lombardy and nearby Veneto are facing travel and other restrictions.

Hospital mishandling: Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte was forced to admit on Monday that a hospital in the northern town of Codogno had mishandled the region's first coronavirus case, known as Patient 1.

Conte said that the hospital that treated Patient 1 had not followed protocol. He did not elaborate on what protocols were breached, but admitted that the mishandling "certainly contributed to the spread."

Patient One: Patient 1 is a 38-year-old man, identified only by the name Mattia.

Patient Zero mystery: Authorities in Italy have not yet identified Patient 0, the individual suspected of bringing the coronavirus into the country.

As the numbers increased in Hubei and around the globe I started to get nervous about it. In late January I started stocking up on medicines, food and pet food. I have a very good supply and am going to add to in it the coming weeks.

Likewise, I've tried to be optimistic but yeah with the news of South Korea, Italy and Iran I've lost all hope.

A young boy in Hubei province has witnessed his grandfather die and remained at home alone afterwards because of coronavirus restrictions, according to local media.

The news of the child’s ordeal prompted an outpouring of anger online in China.

In Zhangwan district in the city of Shiyan, which has implemented “wartime control” to prevent the spread of the virus, local community workers on Monday afternoon found an elderly man surnamed Tan who had died at home. His five or six-year-old grandson was also at home, Guo Ruibing, vice deputy director of the publicity department of Zhangwan district, told local media.

The official did not confirm details posted online that the man had died several days earlier and that the grandson had survived on biscuits. When asked by community workers why he did not seek help, the child reportedly said: “Grandpa said not to leave. There is a virus outside."

The death rate per infection just seems high right now because all the people who've had asymptomatic or low symptom infections and already got over it are not being counted. Only the sickest ones and the ones known to have had contact with those sickest patients are being tested because they are the only ones being recorded right now. Right now, it looks like for every 100 infections, 2 people die BUT there could be 10,000 people who were infected and didn't even get sick enough to go to the doctor or get tested or even show symptoms beyond a slight cough or fever. If you add those 10,000 people in the death rate is now 2 out of every 10,100 people.

We don't know at this point but it's too early to panic. by Anonymousreply 148February 26, 2020 7:18 AM

R147, you could say the same thing about the flu. Lots of people get the flu, never go to the doctor and stay home. Then they get better all by themselves. Those people are probably never reported, so you could argue the 0.1% mortality rate for the flu is artificially high, which it may be. Those are only the cases we know about.

The reason people can’t get a grip on this is that China has lied from the first, and in real life we don’t know how many got sick, or how many died. We don’t have enough data to know percentages.

Who knows if we even know how many are hospitalized. A lot of people entered the hospital with other illnesses then got the Coronavirus when they were there. How are they reporting that? Broken leg, Coronavirus or both?

Our best bet now is to go by documented evidence in other countries that have more transparency. And I just read a report that was not peer reviewed, saying Iran must have over 10,000 additional unreported cases due to a mathematical formula extrapolating from the reported cases. I don’t know if that’s accurate, but we’re about to find out.

It looks like the U.S. figures aren’t accurate too. There aren’t enough test kits, people are presenting at their doctors’ offices with Coronavirus symptoms, some recent travelers, and they aren’t being tested. Trump probably thinks not testing people helps. The problem is, when you do catch up, there can be a huge jump in a day that panics people because it’s a cumulative total over days or weeks suddenly getting reported. Trump’s “nothing to see here” attitude may backfire.

R146 All the cases in Kuwait have been 'imported' from Iran I believe.

Whilst there is no evidence yet on the transmission if warmer temperatures the stunt/reduce the transmission of the virus it is worth noting that up until this point that has been little to no transmission of the virus in the Southern Hemisphere or the tropical regions.

Australia: All imported Brazil: One possible import Kuwait: All imported Thailand: Mostly imported The Philippines: All imported Singapore: Some imported and some transferred within the country.

However, the imported ones in Singapore appear to have happened largely in air-conditioned environments and Singapore's cases have flat lined in the last few days (they are excellent at monitoring and recording everything).

The worst transmissions: China, Northern Italy, Iran, South Korea, Japan have all occurred in cold weather. Actually the temperatures in all those areas are colder than winter in most of Australia. The cruise ship was air-conditioned so that tells one a lot too - and cruise ships are notorious was disease (that is an industry that should be shut-down).

I'm noting saying that the virus won't spread in warmer weather. Other mild coronavirus' spread all year round but are way more prominent in cooler/cold weather. Watch the tropical areas and Southern Hemisphere over the coming weeks.

by Anonymousreply 151February 26, 2020 8:13 AM

It will be interesting r151, summer here in New Zealand has been really quite cool this year, and we have a lot of Chinese students heading in. It's just a matter of time.

In the town I live in, 65% of the population is over sixty.

by Anonymousreply 152February 26, 2020 8:20 AM

A third coronavirus case in France, one death. This was a 60 year old man in Paris. I don't consider 60 old and this is a little scary.

by Anonymousreply 153February 26, 2020 8:49 AM

I meant 3 more cases, one death.

by Anonymousreply 154February 26, 2020 8:54 AM

R153 Wasn't that one death a couple of weeks ago? A Chinese man visiting France?

by Anonymousreply 155February 26, 2020 9:18 AM

R152 Australia has been tropical for months now - hideous humid weather. Hoping that has helped keep us free (so far) from the virus as all our cases have been imported so far.

Must applaud NZ for stopping flights from South Korea earlier this week - Australia has yet to do that!

by Anonymousreply 156February 26, 2020 9:20 AM

R155 Yeah there was also the old Chinese man but this is another death that happened yesterday during the night. It is a French guy this time.

The explosion of cases in South Korea can traced back the crazy church in the south while in Iran from the pilgrims in city of Qom. But what is the Italian excuse?

R139 I started gathering supplies over a month ago then coronavirus coverage went virtually silent in the US for the past two weeks. Now BOOM nonstop panic starts full force yesterday. Any guesses on when this shelter in place scenario may happen in the Eastern US? I originally thought mid March.

I will get a little more Sudafed, electrolyte water, tp and paper towels, otherwise I think I’m good for hunkering down for a few weeks. My brother has a newborn I better tell him to stock up on some diapers/formula.

Troubling how much things have ramped up. Although I knew this virus was no joke when China barricading people in their homes. People around still seem so normal and unbothered, they still don't seem to be thinking about it the way many of us on here are. I have been low key stocking up here and there but now I think I better get more organized about it

by Anonymousreply 166February 26, 2020 11:17 AM

R162 I've long had a interest it viruses that have emerged dating back to HIV before it had a name and aside from that virus and this one none of them have given me any great concerns.

And the concerns in relation to HIV were very different from the coronavirus outbreak. Even in the very very early days when HIV was known as GRID common sense alone told you that it wasn't transmitted via the air because everyone would have had it.

It was clearly something gay men were engaged it but what people didn't know. But provided you were not sexually active it was threatening like this coronavirus. It was a very different kind of threat. But all diseases are terrible regardless of who they effect or how.

More on the second French victim from The Guardian:

French authorities are urgently trying to trace the source of the coronavirus infection that claimed the life of a 60-year-old citizen who died over night in the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, in Paris, as five new infections were reported in the country.

According to officials the individual had not travelled to either China or northern Italy.

The French fatality was identified as a teacher from L’Oise region, in northern France, who suffered a massive pulmonary embolism as a result of the virus. The teacher is the second infection identified in the L’Oise region.

Also from The Guardian:

More new coronavirus infections outside China than inside – WHO

There have been more new detections of coronavirus outside China than inside, in a major turning point in the international spread of Covid-19, the World Health Organisation reports.

In his opening remarks to the mission briefing on Covid-19, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, highlighted what appeared to be a slowing in the rate of new infections inside China, where the outbreak began, as well as a number of countries that appeared to have nipped incipient outbreaks in the bud.

He went on:

Yesterday, the number of new cases reported outside China exceeded the number of new cases in China for the first time. The sudden increases of cases in Italy, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Korea are deeply concerning. There are now cases linked to Iran in Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait and Oman. There are now cases linked to Italy in Algeria, Austria, Croatia, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

Yesterday a joint team between WHO and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control arrived in Rome to review the public health measures that have been put in place and provide technical support. A WHO team will travel to Iran this weekend to provide support.

The increase in cases outside China has prompted some media and politicians to push for a pandemic to be declared. We should not be too eager to declare a pandemic without a careful and clear-minded analysis of the facts. WHO has already declared a public health emergency of international concern – our highest level of alarm.

Using the word pandemic carelessly has no tangible benefit, but it does have significant risk in terms of amplifying unnecessary and unjustified fear and stigma, and paralyzing systems. It may also signal that we can no longer contain the virus, which is not true. We are in a fight that can be won if we do the right things.

by Anonymousreply 169February 26, 2020 11:22 AM

Honestly, I'm just looking at it thusly: We already live in a dystopian hellscape. Worst case, I get to check out of it a little early.

I find that cold medications barely make a difference for me. I know Tumeric is an anti inflammatory but what else does it do? Should I even bother hunting for a mask? I've seen them advertised on Instagram. Nice official looking masks.

by Anonymousreply 171February 26, 2020 11:41 AM

171 Masks are really only for medical professionals and people who are unwell to help them prevent from spreading disease.

Aside from offering relief, cold medicines don't really do anything. Drinking plenty of fluids is really important - I can't stress that enough.

by Anonymousreply 172February 26, 2020 11:44 AM

CNBC: Greece has confirmed its first coronavirus case, a 38-year-old Greek woman who had traveled from an area of northern Italy, according to Sotiris Tsiodras, a representative of the Ministry of Health, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, Italy has now reported that four children in the country have also contracted the flu-like illness.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will discuss the deadly coronavirus outbreak during a news conference at 6 p.m. ET with officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trump made the announcement on Twitter after attacking media for “panicking markets” through their coverage of the virus.

by Anonymousreply 175February 26, 2020 12:13 PM

Well, I arrived at work just now to find that my university has installed hand sanitizer dispensers next to the elevators on every floor of my building.

I have a stupid, yet honest question: So many people wear surgical masks now as a matter of course, but why hasn't wearing of surgical gloves caught on? I'd rather wear gloves than wash my hands 500 times per day.

by Anonymousreply 176February 26, 2020 12:16 PM

Because you have to change them with every new contact with someone.

by Anonymousreply 177February 26, 2020 12:22 PM

Also, after a not-very-long time, they become as uncomfortable as hell.

by Anonymousreply 178February 26, 2020 12:22 PM

And face masks don't?

by Anonymousreply 179February 26, 2020 12:24 PM

If your stockpiling food on a budget and have limit space some things to think about. Slim fast or similar powdered shakes and powered milk will hold up for a long time. It's not fancy but it works. There is a recipe for no knead bread on line. It's easy and tastes good. Useful if you don't want to go out.

Invest in sauces and grav ies. Also cookie ingredient s. If the food is crap a cookie or piece of cake after will give you something to look forward to.

M REs are good. Also powdered eggs and powered milk are a must. Everything needs one of the other it seems.

My advice after surviving Michael. We managed with no electric and no running water for a month. If you can sit this out at home I hope this helps. And don't forget Amazon Wal-Mart and Sam's will ship it to you.

by Anonymousreply 180February 26, 2020 12:24 PM

[quote]And face masks don't?

Gloves also don't protect other people. The masks are doing more to protect other people from your germs as you from theirs.

Additionally, unless you plan on changing gloves each time you touch anything, it's useless. Try going a full day without touching your face after touching something else.

by Anonymousreply 181February 26, 2020 12:28 PM

[quote] I'm not one to freakout over stuff like this, but I am somewhat concerned. If this virus really does break out and spread everywhere, and the mortality is really 2.3% as the Chinese are now saying ... I kind of don't even want to think about what that means.

Remember this is fatality rate of INFECTIONS, and not everyone in the population will be infected. And it mostly seems to be affecting the older population like most flus do.

by Anonymousreply 182February 26, 2020 12:30 PM

R180 I wouldn't rely on anyone shipping anything. Remember workers will be effected by this. The people that prepare your order, the drivers, etc - sure use them if they will still be operating but don't depend on them.

Also, the virus can remain on items for up to 9 days. So anything you received should be unwrapped with gloves that you then throw in the bin.

by Anonymousreply 183February 26, 2020 12:30 PM

Yes, R34, I find it very hard to believe. My husband is preparing his office to work from home within the next month.

by Anonymousreply 184February 26, 2020 12:33 PM

R175 Fuck Trump is clueless and useless not that we don't already know that.

The coronavirus may very spell end his political career in November. When it hit the US (which it is going to do) and if lots of people get really sick and die he will be gone.

Same with any Government running countries that can delay the virus and take more drastic action (like US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, basically anywhere this is an island or remote). I mean lets face it the virus is going to bring down the current leader of China - leader for life - not likely now, even if from outside China that measures that China has taken have been excellent in giving more time to the rest of the world to prepare.

by Anonymousreply 185February 26, 2020 12:35 PM

R182: That's because this is an illness similar to the flue.

It affects way more people who have other problems (specially if they are elder) and of course countries with no good access to medic care.

by Anonymousreply 188February 26, 2020 12:38 PM

R182 You are right in that there are lots of people who won't get picked up in the stats who have had a mild case of the virus. However, people are dying at rates well over those for the annual flu. Annual flu deaths = 0.1% (in a good year). Death rate for coronavirus from people ages 40 to 49 - 0.9% - that is not a good outcome and of course it worse the older you get.

In Iran children have been reported to have died.

by Anonymousreply 190February 26, 2020 12:39 PM

R109: Maybe in your country. Flu deaths are way higher in third world countries.

In europe the death rate of coronavirus is 0,7%

by Anonymousreply 191February 26, 2020 12:39 PM

R186 In some respects its worse than Ebola because people can be spreading it without even knowing and it appears to be particularly virulent. At least with Ebola people are not infectious until they start showing symptoms which helps keep the virus transmission rate down.

by Anonymousreply 192February 26, 2020 12:41 PM

If the ENTIRE population of the world was involved and the infection and mortality rates hold at current levels, NOT EVEN 100 MILLION would die. That sounds high, but deaths would have to be dramatically higher for the world to be truly affected.

by Anonymousreply 193February 26, 2020 12:41 PM

R193, always looking on the bright side!

by Anonymousreply 195February 26, 2020 12:45 PM

R193 That's probably correct but all that misery and the fact that many needy people went get the medical treatment they should get because of under resourced medical services in ALL Western countries. And heavens help all the developing nations.

That is why its important for countries to stop the virus with closing border and if it still gets in contain and quarantine. It will cause the virus to last longer but will also allow more people to have access to better medical care.

I should ad that one keeps hearing reports how China's infections have peaked. But its an artificial peak. If people start going back to work and resuming normal activities the numbers will rise again. Unless they can completely rid themselves of the virus its going to be an on-going problem for China and all other countries as well.

Border closing aren't going to work. Leaving aside that in a world with as interconnected a food supply as we currently have, we'd likely have shortages faster, the genie is already out of the bottle.

Three baboons escape and run rampant in Sydney from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Authorities are claiming the male was there for a vasectomy (the hospital is for humans not fucking animals) but I wouldn't be surprised if the baboons were being experimented on for coronavirus. The two other baboons were females to accompany the male baboon so he would get 'upset'. Anyway, this smells very very fishy to me.

Ironically I walked past there an hour before the baboons escaped.

Keep in mind if Trump does a press conference about this, it will be the first time a lot of people have paid attention at all. If they are Deplorables, no matter what he says, they may think, I have to protect little Johnny and Jane and the grandparents at all costs. Even True Believers may think, I love Trump, but I love my kids more.

The people that don’t know anything about this right now are exactly the ones to overreact and panic buy. To be fair, when the President calls a press conference about an epidemic, that’s something to listen about. I just feel sorry for the CDC people he drags up there to lie to the public. They get to choose between keeping their jobs in an epidemic, knowing they wouldn’t be replaced by anyone qualified, if at all, or lying for Trump that nothing’s wrong. He’s doing it to calm the stock markets, he doesn’t care if anyone dies, so they will be forced to say something like, it can’t possibly come here, so the market will stabilize. From what we know, there are probably a lot of undiagnosed cases out there. There are reports of U. S. doctors seeing symptoms from recent travelers to Iran and Italy, but they have no test kits. So those individuals will continue to spread the disease no matter what Trump says.

This may be when people descend on markets like this was an upcoming snowstorm and buy them out.

by Anonymousreply 201February 26, 2020 12:55 PM

How shameful that the Jackass-In-Chief of our country is probably the only world leader to shirk off this disease as if it were nothing more than a small scratch.

At least his stupidity is consistent.

by Anonymousreply 202February 26, 2020 12:56 PM

R199 Border closures will help to delay the virus and slow it time to better prepare for it. Of course closure of borders would not include trade though given production of everything around the world is likely to grind to a halt there won't be much trade anyway.

by Anonymousreply 203February 26, 2020 12:56 PM

Border closing and quarantine doesn’t work.

by Anonymousreply 204February 26, 2020 12:56 PM

This is bad. This crisis has exposed the WHO’s incompetence and uselessness. Also, China knew about this in early January, and reprimanded eight early whistleblowers. This global pandemic and the economic, health, and political chaos that will ensue is solely the fault of the corrupt CCP.

Instead of condemning the CCP, the WHO is praising it. Go figure.

by Anonymousreply 205February 26, 2020 1:03 PM

R204 They slow down the progress of the virus. That is the point of them. Nothing is going to stop the virus but its idiotic and frankly criminal of any politicians to simply let it run rampant and not take necessary means to try to SLOW IT DOWN.

There are benefits to slowing down a virus. More time to prepare hospitals, staff, equipment. Also the longer you can slower down more might be known about the virus and the best way to treat it.

by Anonymousreply 206February 26, 2020 1:04 PM

There should've been major news conferences addressing the nation with a plan in place, and what Amercans need to do to protect themselves. And what our country will do to protect us.

Instead,we have an low IQ imbecile telling us everything will be fine, it will work itself out.

by Anonymousreply 208February 26, 2020 1:09 PM

They’ve already said China and other Asian GDPs would be zero or negative this quarter, if the stock market doesn’t correct it’s rigged... which it is.

Trump is probably buying time for him and all of his billionaire friends to go short on the market. Let’s not forget insider trading is one of the big things that will come out of this administration after it’s all done, they’re already doing it: timing announcements with stock buys/sells.

by Anonymousreply 209February 26, 2020 1:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 210February 26, 2020 1:17 PM

R205 China does deserve criticism for not letting the world know about the situation in Wuhan in early January when the CCP found out. However, they deserve praise for the measures they have taken to try to spoke to virus spreading because they have brought the world more time - which most countries are squandering away by twiddling their thumbs.

The WHO are pathetic and they should have declared it a pandemic by now. This is happening, its just how fast it will unfold now.

by Anonymousreply 211February 26, 2020 1:20 PM

The delays in announcements and spins are financially motivated. Trump usually puts intentions out there, he said in the tweet about “spooking the markets” that’s it. That’s all he cares about. NO Billionaires or hundred-millionaires are going to be waiting in an ER room or deprived of an ICU room, so they care about money & the markets and don’t give a shit if Grandma Edna and her three grand babies in Des Moines croak outside the Urgent Care with WuFlu.

The number of cases in Italy has tripled over the last two days, rising to 374 confirmed diagnoses from 124 on Monday, according to data from Italy’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organizations. The virus has killed 12 people so far, up from two reported deaths two days ago.

A bulk of the cases are still concentrated in the wealthy Lombardy region in Northern Italy. The country’s first two cases were confirmed on Jan. 30, a couple of Chinese tourists, the Ministry said. The first confirmed case of secondary transmission occurred at a hospital on Feb. 18.

CNN-The Pope's Ash Wednesday mass will go on as planned

The Pope's Ash Wednesday mass in Rome will go on as planned today without any "particular measures" against coronavirus, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni tells CNN.

The mass at the church of Santa Sabina will include the usual tradition of handshaking and embracing as a sign of peace.

Attendees can use the water at the back of church to bless themselves upon entering.

Ash Wednesday is one of the most important religious days for Catholics after Christmas and Easter. It signifies the beginning of Lent, a period of six weeks before Easter when many Christians fast, abstain from meat and make a personal Lenten sacrifice to prepare themselves for Easter.

On Ash Wednesday Pope Francis participates in a solemn procession, together with Cardinals, bishops and monks, from the Benedictine Church of Sant’Anselmo on the Aventine Hill in Rome to the nearby Dominican church of Santa Sabina, where he celebrates mass for Ash Wednesday and places ashes, in the sign of the cross on the heads of the faithful.

CNN-3 Russians from Diamond Princess ship test positive for coronavirus

Three out of eight Russians who were evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan were diagnosed with coronavirus, the head of Russian consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said Wednesday, state-run news agency TASS reported.

“We’ve evacuated Russian citizens from Japan, all eight of them were hospitalized under medical supervision, including three people who were diagnosed with a novel coronavirus in Japan,” Popova said according to TASS. “In those three patients, [coronavirus] was confirmed using several virological methods.”

Popova added that all evacuated Russians and their families are under quarantine in the city of Kazan and "feeling well."

Previously, Russia reported two confirmed cases of coronavirus, both in Chinese nationals. “Obviously, today we must admit that the possibility of coronavirus spreading further into the Russian Federation is certainly increasing,” Popova added. “The number of countries with coronavirus infection is increasing, it is better not to plan a trip abroad if there is no urgent need.”

US Medical workers are being forced into NDAs about clusters of cases, because the US is trying to keep the economy going, thinking they can wait it out until spring. The economy is held up with stimulus and has been ready for collapse for awhile. Either we make it to spring and the virus passes or it hits hard and the Republicans are going to go extreme and do sudden martial law. The US decisions are more in-line with China than say European countries, as the thought of human life is not the factor but rather political and economic motivations. The Republicans will do ANYTHING to stay in power.

by Anonymousreply 229February 26, 2020 2:20 PM

I don't believe for a moment that US medical workers are being "forced" to sign NDAs to hide massive numbers of virus cases. If somebody came up to any of the doctors or nurses I know and said "here, sign this so we can hide an epidemic", they'd tell the person to fuck off. Then they'd tell the world.

NEW YORK, Feb 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has contacted producers of about 20 drugs that either source all of their main ingredients from or are finished in China to gauge if they will face shortages due to the coronavirus outbreak.

None of the companies reported that a shortage is expected for their drugs due to the outbreak, an FDA spokeswoman said.

"We have been in contact with those firms to understand if they face any drug shortage risks due to the outbreak," FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Caccomo said in a statement late on Monday. "None of these firms has reported any shortage to date."

Caccomo did not identify any of the drugs or the companies.

She said the FDA has also reached out to more than 180 manufacturers to remind them of their requirement to notify the regulator of any expected supply disruptions.

U.S. officials raised concerns this week about the security of the U.S. drug supply chain in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in China, where a significant portion of the ingredients used to make prescription drugs is manufactured.

Around 88 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients used in drugs for the U.S. market were manufactured overseas in 2018, according to the FDA

At the end of December 2019, a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) caused an outbreak in Wuhan, and has quickly spread to all provinces in China and 26 other countries around the world, leading to a serious situation for epidemic prevention. So far, there is still no specific medicine.

Previous studies have shown that chloroquine phosphate (chloroquine) had a wide range of antiviral effects, including anti-coronavirus. Here we found that treating the patients diagnosed as novel coronavirus pneumonia with chloroquine might improve the success rate of treatment, shorten hospital stay and improve patient outcome.

In order to guide and regulate the use of chloroquine in patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia, the multicenter collaboration group of Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province and Health Commission of Guangdong Province for chloroquine in the treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia developed this expert consensus after extensive discussion. It recommended chloroquine phosphate tablet, 500mg twice per day for 10 days for patients diagnosed as mild, moderate and severe cases of novel coronavirus pneumonia and without contraindications to chloroquine.

I’ve been busy working and deliberately staying away from these threads because it’s grating to see posters here posting inaccurate information, as they obviously don’t work in healthcare. R72 what you described isn’t airborne precautions but droplet precautions, 6 feet vicinity is the official zone for droplet precautions. Airborne precautions is when a pathogen such as measles is transmitted via airspace where the infected person sneezed or coughed. Direct providers to infected patients wear protective masks and goggles because we’re in contact with contaminated surfaces and if we also touch our eyes for instance, we can become infected that way too.

I work in SF for a top teaching institution, none of the health professionals I know are freaking out, spewing apocalyptic scenarios, acting like Trumpster preppers, and taking every newest piece of “miracle drug/ supplement” as cure-all. We continue to be current on latest updates, trials, and protocols, and yes we are very concerned. But there’s a difference between concerned and freaking out. At this point we’ve had more patients be admitted for flu complications, just to give a dose of real life hapoening right now. One of my pediatric patients is in the PICU with H1N1 virus very sick and she’s on ECMO. I had a few patients that we sent PCR tests for COVID-19 this past week, so far all negative.

As for physicians in China being infected and dying. I might have an explanation and this is totally conjecture based on personal observations on my part. I’ve worked with visiting MDs from China before, and observed that they’re even less stringent about hand washing between patients than our MDs and NPs here. MDs also don’t act as bedside providers caring for patients unlike RNs, so they’re also less prone to adhere to these precautions. In outbreaks like what happened in China, this could explain why it’s the MDs not RNs who have more prolonged and direct contact with patients, who are contracting and dying from the virus.

I work as DNP in both primary care and psych, and have experiences both inpatient and outpatient as a bedside nurse and as prescribing provider. What I see as biggest problem is with lack of hospital ICU beds. The floor and stepdown units can be condensed for only patients needing inpatient care, and that would involve canceling scheduled surgeries and procedures not determined to be medically necessary. If there is an outbreak of pandemic proportions, from a public health standpoint we can utilize military resources such as military base as containment areas.

Young and healthy individuals are not dying or becoming critically ill. That is a somewhat reassuring fact about this virus, and I use reassuring in the most basic sense of the word, not that I think we should take it lightly. Another thing working in our favor in containment is warmer weather spelling the tail end if the flu season. I’ll try to post latest articles of interest later, there is apparently some hope that an oral anti-malaria medication is effective against the virus.

R257 et al.

For those "stocking up" what do you suggest I buy in bulk? My diet consists mostly of green veggies, poultry and red meat. I'm not a fancy eater but I do stick to a very low carb diet.

I have a dog and 2 cats. My dog doesn't eat dog food. I cook him chicken and rice, or ground beef and rice for his meals. My cats will only eat fancy feast dry food - they refuse anything else., so I should stock up on that. Its probably made in china after all.

I wouldn't even know what to buy in bulk because I would think the foods I eat would go bad. Maybe peanut butter, some frozen veggies?

I know the standard answers of pasta and rice and soups - but those are so high carb/high sodium.

by Anonymousreply 262February 26, 2020 3:33 PM

R262, you and your dog are history. Your cat should be fine though.

by Anonymousreply 264February 26, 2020 3:38 PM

Three more people test positive for coronavirus at Tenerife hotel

Three more people have tested positive for coronavirus at the four-star Tenerife hotel placed on lockdown after an Italian doctor staying there was confirmed to have the deadly bug, according to new reports.

The doctor’s wife — along with two other people they had been staying with — also tested positive for COVID-19 at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel on the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, Metro UK reported.

The patients are part of a group of 10 people who traveled from Italy’s Lombardy region — where authorities are battling the largest outbreak outside Asia.

After the first test came back positive, health authorities ordered that the around 1,000 guests at the hotel be monitored for infection.

Now, about 100 guests have been given the all-clear to leave because it is not believed they came in contact with the infected group.

Anyone with symptoms will be “evaluated and will stay in the hotel without leaving their rooms, and depending on the results of the tests and whether they test positive or negative, a further decision would then be taken,” said Domingo Nunez, head of epidemiology at the Canary Islands Health Service, according to the report.

Those who test positive will be hospitalized, according to Nunez.

R262, get a bunch of cases of Premier Protein shakes at Costco, and some nuts and whatever else you can eat that doesn't spoil.

My dog is in the same boat as yours, but she's 17. Her prescriptions are on autofill from Chewy and she currently has 6 weeks worth.

by Anonymousreply 269February 26, 2020 3:46 PM

It's slightly more virulent than flu- so wash your hands, avoid travel to the most affected nations and get flu shots (decreases the severity if you are infected). The most vulnerable are the very old and very young- just like flu.

by Anonymousreply 270February 26, 2020 3:46 PM

R262 from costco canned chicken, nuts, protein bars/powder, jerky. If you use meds have a months worth in the house.

Great suggestions R265! Sounds good. I have a regular sized freezer that is part of my fridge. I could stuff it as much as possible. thanks r269!

R266 - my dog use to eat regular dog food. I would also mix in some chopped chicken or a meat with it, sometimes even a wet dog food. Then one day he was very sick... he was only 3 years old and ended up in the animal ER in acute liver failure. 72 hours and over 5K later he was on the mend. However the vet wanted to know what he was eating - so I began researching everything I had ever given him - and what I found are these "dog" foods are horrible. After that incident I decided I would make his meals myself that way I knew exactly what was in them. I do agree that the dry food was much easier and lasts forever, but his health is more important to me - plus I don't want another unexpected 5K bill from the Animal Emergency Hospital.. Maybe he is just a sensitive pug (he also suffers seasonal allergies) but I don't want to ever experience that again, He almost died, and he was only 3. At one point he was even quarantined at the hospital when they suspected he had leptospirosis - but he had been vaccinated for that as a puppy. They never were able to tell me exactly what led him to liver failure other than it was most likely something he ingested that was posionous.

Here is just one example of a dog food thats making dogs sick..and some even dying..

We have a case in my city (Strasbourg). He's 36 and just back from Italy. More concerning, a 60yo teacher who hadn't travelled at all died last night in Paris from the virus. Basically because he hadn't travelled he wasn't tracked, was admitted for what they thought was the regular flu, then they finally tested him and he was positive. This is very, very bad news. As an italian offical said, if you test, you find. There must be thousands of case around us and we simply don't know.

Our poor health workers...

by Anonymousreply 276February 26, 2020 3:55 PM

R273 Yeah flu shots won't do anything for the coronavirus. But at least it means you won't catch both.

by Anonymousreply 277February 26, 2020 3:55 PM

R269 my dog also has his prescriptions from chewy. I have about 2 months worth now - but maybe I can get more (he has epilepsy and has to take his seizure med twice a day)

by Anonymousreply 278February 26, 2020 3:56 PM

R278, I think you should be able to; it not like with people insurance where you can't have your prescriptions filled too closely together. Unless you have pet insurance which I don't know anything about as my old girl has long-since aged out of being eligible for that.

I also need to start stockpiling her OTC artificial tears.

by Anonymousreply 279February 26, 2020 4:01 PM

Oh, one thing I wanted to add, I don't know it it has been mentioned yet but if you use regular milk for anything and want to stock up, Aldi's ORGANIC milk is ultra-pasturized and doesn't spoil for a very long time. I got two half-gallons yesterday and the expiration date is April 27.

I'm sure the sanctimonious food know-it-all will pop up and say milk kills, but whatever.

by Anonymousreply 280February 26, 2020 4:09 PM

R279 I'm sure I can - chewy just needs confirmation from my vet. My boy doesn't have pet insurance either - If I had gotten it when he was a puppy it would have been great - would have probably covered that 5K bill from the ER and his epilepsy meds. Ironically, He got his first seizure when he was 1 years old - 12 hours after he had received some vaccines (one of which was the leptospirosis vaccine) From there on out - he started having seizures a few times a week. Then we put him on meds, and it's helped a lot. Doesn't stop them all, but now he only has a seizure once every 6 months or so.

I don't let him get vaccines anymore..

by Anonymousreply 281February 26, 2020 4:10 PM

Actually R274 a little more than twice.

by Anonymousreply 282February 26, 2020 4:13 PM

for those planning on stocking up and haven't yet, now is the time. Next week may be too late. stock up on everyday items like shampoo, bar soap, clothing soap, kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaners, toothpaste, etc. Any over the counter drug medications that you need or may need. if people panic there is going to be a run on everything and they won't be able to keep up with the demand.

by Anonymousreply 283February 26, 2020 4:15 PM

R158 Apparently there was a failure to follow protocol in a hospital where a patient had the virus. Of course, hospital is the worst place for this to emerge, a crowded building full of elderly, sick and immunocompromised people.

by Anonymousreply 284February 26, 2020 4:16 PM

R276 Salut le strasbourgeois !

I also think this is pretty concerning. The French guy who died was a teacher so there's a possibility he got contaminated by a student. The Amiens case is pretty severe and is in ICU. These two severe cases mean there's probably a lot of undetected mild cases.

And there's the soccer match today in Lyon, against Turin. 3000 Italian supporters might come. Maybe not the best idea.

Here’s something you should buy: thicker trash bags. Who knows if service will be interrupted.

I was buying the standard white thirteen gallon Costco bags, and the dirty cat sand would stink in the bag. I saw a recommendation to buy trash compactor bags. They are 2. ML thick, so I thought I’d give that a try. Instant change, the smell was all gone. We only get trash pickup here once a week and in the summer the smell is awful.

Costco has boxes of (70)18 gallon bags for $11.99. Not at every location, I got mine at the commercial location, but it was sure worth it. If you’re going to be cooking every meal at home, you don’t want to be dealing with trash smells.

Buy black contractor bags too. They are large and 3.1 ML. That really cuts down on smell too, and service may be reduced.

by Anonymousreply 307February 26, 2020 6:11 PM

R307, I'm not R303, but rural places have lower quality hospitals if they have hospitals at all. I'm thinking of my parents in rural Kansas-- a state with an aged population, the rural areas even more so.

They'd have to drive three hours to get to Kansas City or Oklahoma City, and those hospitals would be full of other old people in surrounding areas.

Cities skew younger, more and better facilities and more and better doctors.

R308 While that is true - even cities with numerous hospitals can't compete with the amount of people that can get sick in those areas. Plus more public transportation in cities can definitely cause the spreading to get worse than for people that live in rural areas.

I had visions of someone approaching the car in a HazMat suit. Didn't happen here, but I bet it's happening at a church somewhere.

CNN-First coronavirus case reported in Norway

A person has tested positive for coronavirus in Norway, the country’s Institute for Public Health (NIPH) announced in a statement. This is the first case recorded in the Scandinavian country.

The person has no symptoms but was tested after returning from an area of China affected by the outbreak. The NIPH said it was a “weak positive result."

“The NIPH considers it very unlikely that the person poses an infection risk to others," said Line Vold, director of the Department of Infection Control and Preparedness at NIPH.

As a precaution, the person is undergoing quarantine at their home, Vold added.

cnn-It is "highly probable" New York will have cases of coronavirus, governor says

New York state has “explored” 27 cases of coronavirus, and all tests have come back negative except one case that is still pending, NY State Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference.

Cuomo went on to say that he believes the case that is pending is in Nassau County on Long Island, NY.

“It is highly probably that you will see a continuing spread of this virus. It is highly probable that we will have people in New York State who test positive,” Cuomo said

Additionally Gov. Cuomo said that he is submitting an emergency supplemental appropriations bill to the state legislature asking for $40 million additional dollars for the New York Department of Health to respond to the virus.

Cuomo said that New York State is currently in the “containment phase” of dealing with the virus. “Our operating paradigm is always prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” he said.

Greater New York Hospital Association President Kenneth Raske joined Cuomo at the press conference and said that hospitals have been working on preparing for coronavirus for weeks.

He said that the resources that the system has to deal with possible cases are “significant.”

Orange County, CA declaring a local emergency about coronvirus

Orange County officials will declare a local health emergency Wednesday in response to the coronavirus that has infected more than 81,000 people worldwide, including 59 cases in the United States.

County Supervisors Michelle Steel and Andrew Do plan to hold a news conference at 1:30 p.m. with local health officials in Santa Ana to discuss the declaration.

The city of San Francisco declared a similar emergency Tuesday following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s warning that the virus is likely to continue to spread. Santa Clara and San Diego counties have issued similar declarations.

For the first time, more new cases of the coronavirus were reported outside China than in the country where the epidemic originated, the World Health Organization says.

The World Health Organization reported that the number of new cases reported outside China on Tuesday exceeded the number of new infections inside the country for the first time. The number in China was 412, while the tally in the rest of the world was 459.

In Europe, where Germany, France and Spain were among the places with a growing caseload, an expanding cluster of more than 440 cases in northern Italy was eyed as a source for transmissions. In the Middle East, where cases increased in Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq, blame was directed toward Iran. In Asia, where the crisis originated late last year in China, threats continued to emerge around the region, with South Korea battling a mass outbreak centered in the 2.5 million-person city of Daegu.

Italy recorded 78 new infections on Wednesday and Greece became the newest country to see a case of the virus. South Korea announced 284 new cases, largely in Daegu, bringing its total to 1,261. China, still the epicenter of the crisis even as new outposts caught the world’s attention, reported 406 new cases and 52 more deaths. The country has a total of 78,604 cases of the virus and 2,715 fatalities.

China said Wednesday that those sickened by the virus included 555 prisoners who officials said likely became infected by guards using the same bus station as a nearby pulmonary hospital. In a twist, China is now heavily regulating arrivals from abroad, with authorities placing South Koreans under monitoring, state broadcaster CCTV reported, after five people on a flight showed signs of fever.

"Our eyes might play an important role in the spread and prevention of the coronavirus outbreak threatening China and a number of other countries.

For example, a Peking University physician believes he may have contracted the coronavirus while not wearing eye protection when treating patients. Medical officials, though, say while this is possible, it may be unlikely.

Meanwhile, to cut your risk of contracting coronavirus, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends protective eyewear, among other precautions, if you will be near someone with the virus for an extended period."

83 people in Nassau County being monitored for possible coronavirus exposure

Eighty-three Nassau County residents have been asked to undergo a two-week voluntary quarantine from the date that they traveled to China or had contact with someone infected with the virus, news station WPVI reported.

“We’re monitoring this situation in Nassau very, very closely and have been right from the beginning to respond to any cases should they emerge in our county,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said at a press conference.

The group is required to report their temperature and any symptoms every day to local health officials, WPVI reported.

No one has been diagnosed with the virus, but tests for one resident are pending, officials said.

“Should someone need medical care, we’ll evaluate it and we have protocols in place to safely get them medical care,” Nassau County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein said.

News of Nassau’s quarantine comes a day after federal officials warned that it’s only a matter of time before the infection spreads through local communities.

From FUX: Trump says coronavirus vaccine coming along 'rapidly,' risk to US 'remains very low'

*

As Americans' fears grow of a possible coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., President Trump was addressing the nation in a Wednesday evening news conference at the White House to discuss how his administration was handling the virus threat -- saying that a vaccine is being developed "rapidly" and "coming along very well."

The president also announced he was putting Vice President Mike Pence "in charge" of coronavirus prevention efforts, effective immediately.

"Because of all we've done, the risk to the American people remains very low," Trump said at the press conference."We're ready to adapt, and we're ready to do whatever we have to."

CNN-LAX airport is being disinfected every hour

As the fear of novel coronavirus increase among travelers, Los Angeles International Airport is cleaning public areas and facilities at least once an hour, airport spokesperson Becca Doten tells CNN.

Higher traffic areas, such as restrooms, are being cleaned even more often, Doten said.

“We’re disinfecting LAX every hour,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a news conference. “We’re making sure that those points of entry and those places where we could see somebody come in and create a vector, are as secure as we can possibly make them knowing we can never have 100% security.”

The frequency of cleaning is the same as usual, but the extent is has increased, Doten explained.

“We increased the deep cleaning and sanitizing of the restrooms as well as other public areas. This includes surfaces outside restrooms commonly touched by passengers. Also, our cleaning products are formulated to kill germs (both bacteria and viruses),” Doten said.

The CDC continues to screen some arriving passengers for potential signs of coronavirus, and more than 100 additional hand sanitizer stations have been installed throughout the airport.

CNN-At least 1,200 hospital beds prepared in case of a coronavirus outbreak in New York

New York City has prepared at least 1,200 hospital beds in case of a coronavirus outbreak, Mayor Bill De Blasio announced at a news conference Wednesday.

The hospital beds are readily available and won’t compromise other health services, he said.

The city still has no active cases of the virus but officials believe they are well-equipped to handle a possible outbreak, according to De Blasio. The city has asked for an additional minimum of 300,000 face masks after already distributing about 1.5 million masks. They plan to ask for federal assistance to get that need met from private manufacturers.

De Blasio is also requesting the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to expand its testing of travelers beyond China, to include Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Just came back from my coronavirus shopping trip at costco. The cashier was told by her manager tonight that they expect it to get super busy this weekend.

The only other things I need are a case of diet tonic & a case of cava. Otherwise I'm set for 6-8 weeks of hunkering down.

Also, you may think you're healthy but you may have an undiagnosed heart problem or who knows what. Make sure you have your health proxies, DNR, other medical directives ready, POA, last will prepared before you make the trip.

C.D.C. Confirms First Possible Community Transmission of Coronavirus in U.S. A case in California may be the first infection without a known link to travel abroad.

Roni Caryn Rabin By Roni Caryn Rabin Feb. 26, 2020 Updated 8:10 p.m. ET

A person in California who was not exposed to anyone with the coronavirus and had not traveled to countries in which the virus is circulating has tested positive for the new coronavirus, representing what may be the first case of community spread here in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday.

“At this point, the patient’s exposure is unknown,” a C.D.C. statement said. “The case was detected through the U.S. public health system and picked up by astute clinicians.”

I've decided not to go the rice/beans/pasta carb direction, and instead ordered from Amazon packs of canned yellow fin tuna, chicken, and sardines. This weekend I'll get at the grocery frozen broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and zucchini, plus canned vegetables, V-8, Diet Coke, canned salmon.

Already have coming tomorrow from Amazon many rolls of t.p. and paper towels.

Mike Pence's plan for combatting COVID-19: Pray.

by Anonymousreply 428February 27, 2020 12:54 AM

In a way, it’s a good thing Pence was given this job. Deplorables don’t know much about him, unless they’re from his state. All they know is he is “persecuted” for his rigid religious beliefs.

In reality, he’s grossly incompetent and not much smarter than Trump. Let people see that. Then they’ll think twice about him taking over for Trump if he keels over.

by Anonymousreply 429February 27, 2020 1:04 AM

I went to Walmart in advance of potential panic in my neighbourhood and picked up the following: Coconut Oil, Brie, Flour, Pancake Mix, Maple Syrup, new shower curtain and bed pillows, birdfood, water, Shredded Wheat, cat food cases, ingredients for chicken broth (celery, chicken, onions, carrots), more cheese, bar soap, shampoo, carnation milk. I also got 2 small bottles of Tea Tree oil and cleaned bathroom so the house smells clean and "disinfected". Cats also have their own grain-fed roast chicken as treats.

Tomorrow I'm finishing rest of shopping: More water, Chicken and other ingredients for fried rice (ginger, rice, tamari sauce, frozen peas, carrots, celery), toilet paper, paper towels, lypsyll, pasta, canned wild salmon for cats, fruit, wine, maple syrup, toothpaste, olives, frozen vegetables, frozen blueberries, Greek yogurt, laundry detergent and whatever else grabs my attention.

by Anonymousreply 430February 27, 2020 1:07 AM

Maybe it would be a good idea if people would stop traveling around the world for at little while for their vacations? Idiots.

And, as has been stated before but maybe not properly absorbed...it's not that the virus is taken out by warmth during the warmer seasons. It's that people don't sit in the same room breathing and coughing all over each other for hours and hours a day.

Also, viruses are too small for those masks to make a difference. You'll probably end up infecting yourself by poking yourself in the eye with a virally loaded finger while trying to reposition your mask.

And, finally, I hope Trump has it!

by Anonymousreply 442February 27, 2020 2:00 AM

R334 another low carber here. I just came home from the store and I bought lots of frozen broccoli (I don't think I could do canned vegetables) I got 10 packs of chicken breasts that I will freeze, lots of those Atkins Ham & Cheese Omelette breakfast meals (they are good and you can freeze them)

I did go to Home Depot and then Lowes - despite the website saying Limited availability on the masks - they had NOTHING. I will clean an old N95 mask I had from painting over the summer. It's not perfect but it is better than nothing.

But then when I get home a complete BOMBSHELL

The coronavirus may cause shortages of diet coke! I drink that (yes, I know it's bad for me but it's my one bad habit...) I'm going to have to go back out tomorrow and buy all the diet coke I can find.

If they are saying we may have shortages of Diet Coke - everyone will raid the stores for it.

This is just awful. I could deal with eating carbs if absolutely necessary but I can't go without my diet coke

by Anonymousreply 460February 27, 2020 3:28 AM

Human trial vaccine will start in 6 weeks according to National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The WH has asked for $1.25 billion to fund research into treatment and development of vaccine. Politicians and not just fucktard Trump but the Dems trying to score political points on this are not the best source for public health policies and the containment of epidemics. I wouldn't trust what the Dems and certainly not Trump have to say policy-wise in this matter. I have to applaud the HHS which oversees the NIAID for acting so swiftly and coordinating with researchers and healthcare authorities to fast track the human vaccine trial.

There will be a remdesivir trial, and it's an actual RCT (randomized control trial) because the whole point is to see if the treatment works for those who are infected. So far there is one volunteer patient (that we know of) who was on the Princess cruise ship; don't know what that patient's condition is though, whether he/ she has mild course of disease or serious symptoms requiring ICU level of care.

An exciting news on the vaccine front. There will be human trial of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in 2 weeks. It's interesting because instead of injecting you with protein that your immune system makes antibodies against, this trial is for a RNA vaccine. RNA acts as a messenger that carries genetic information/ blueprint copied from the DNA (which contains the actual genetic information) to control protein synthesis. Basically the RNA acts as a translator of proteins. With this vaccine, they're injecting you with the instructions in the form of RNA coding for antigen into your antigen-presenting cells. The body has antigen-presenting-cells that normally patrol for pathogens and destroy these pathogens. In the process these antigen-presenting-cells present the protein antigens to your immune cells. In a nutshell, the encoded RNA has the instructions for your antigen-presenting-cells to produce surface protein antigens that in turn stimulate certain immune cells which recognize these antigens to then produce antibodies against the virus. It is a form of direct response that allows for long-term memory against subsequent exposure to same virus or evolving variants of the virus. Your body can then make its own tweaks to target the virus as it mutates. Thus you get a primary response (vaccine) and a secondary response (exposure to actual pathogen) that is both rapid and robust. Benefits of RNA vaccines include shortening the vaccine production time, therefore enabling us to get vaccine out during an epidemic as opposed to after epidemic has passed. It also allow for scaling and reaching potentially millions of people with this type of vaccine.

More about the woman in Japan who was reinfected after release

3h ago 02:11

NHK is reporting that a Japanese woman who was treated for Covid-19, confirmed as virus-free, and left hospital earlier this month has since retested positive for the disease.

According to the report, the woman is a tour-guide in her 40s, in the city of Osaka.

She began feeling throat and chest pain about two weeks after leaving hospital, and after several visits to doctors, retested positive for the illness, NHK said.

She is now in hospital and has not been to work or in contact with anyone, it said.

The article said prefecture authorities believed she had either been reinfected or that the virus had remained in the woman and multiplied.

R479 did they say 6 months?

I decided not to wait until tomorrow - I just returned from two Walmart’s (in a total downpour) and stocked up on Diet Coke. I bought 12 6 packs of the 16ounce bottles. I went to two stores and got 6 of the 6 packs at each store - because I didn’t want anyone thinking I was a total addict..

But 6 months.. I only have 72 16 ounce bottles. I will have to go out tomorrow again and get more.

I guess this also effects caffeine free Diet Coke? I drink that too...

More details about the northern california case from SF Gate:

New details emerged Wednesday evening about the latest COVID-19 case in Northern California that's being called the first in the United States that has no known connection to travel abroad or another known case.

The patient, who is a resident of Solano County, was brought to UC Davis Medical Center from another Northern California hospital on Feb. 19, but it wasn't until four days later, on Feb. 23, that the CDC heeded a request to test the patient for new coronavirus, according to an email sent to employees Wednesday by the hospital’s interim CEO, Brad Simmons, and David Lubarsky, CEO of UC Davis Health.

The patient arrived on a ventilator, and special protection orders were issued “because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition,” according to the email.

The hospital asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to test for the coronavirus, but testing was delayed until Sunday “since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19,” the email said.

I’m in London and they are being frighteningly quiet about this all. No government official has made any statement. We know it’s here as there are so many coming in and out every day. Many schools are closed down and places of work are beginning to close too but no one is saying anything. The stores are fully stocked, etc. Bizarre. As it stood a couple of weeks ago the hospitals had 4 hour wait times already to get a bed so imagine what this could do. I think they’re unprepared as well. There are quarantine areas that I’m reading about today but the public isn’t told anything. They can’t even handle the sick people that we have already got so I cannot imagine what will happen if this goes rampant.

CNN-Iran coronavirus deaths reach 22, as crisis worsens

The mortality rate from Covid-19 in Iran has soared to over 13% -- significantly higher than any other country experiencing an outbreak of the pathogen. Some suspect that may be down to an under-reporting of the total number of cases, which stand at more than 140. The death rate in China's Hubei province, the epicenter of the virus, is around 2%.

Despite the virus' spread, President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that authorities won't quarantine any Iranian cities. He also warned about the virus becoming "a weapon at the hands of our enemies," as part of "propaganda" against the country.

Iran's Qom province has become ground zero of the country's coronavirus outbreak with 63 confirmed cases, according to state news agency IRNA. Pilgrimages have continued unabated to the holy city of Qom, despite health officials calling on clerics to limit visitors.

The city of Shenzhen drafted legislation to prohibit the consumption of pooches in an effort to improve food safety, the Daily Express reported on Wednesday.

The ban would also extend to snakes, frogs and turtle meat. If passed, it will be the first of its kind in the country, the outlet reported.

The proposed legislation — which was described by lawmakers as a “universal civilization requirement of modern society” — comes after China already banned the trade and consumption of wild animals nationwide.

The deadly new virus was traced to a wildlife market in the city of Wuhan, in China’s Hubei province.

The outbreak, which was discovered in December, has spread to more than 80,000 people across the world and has killed over 2,700.

There’s a guy on twitter called @richisalsohere who says he’s living in Italy. Sounds like he’s an American in the military living there with his wife and seventeen years old son.

He says it’s much more widespread than is reported. People are avoiding the hospital if they possibly can, because they think if they have just a regular virus, they’re likely to get Coronavirus at the hospital. And it seems that most young and healthy people can recover at home.

Which makes sense. I wonder how many Americans would avoid the hospital, thinking they could ride it out at home. That would skew the numbers.

[quote] Hey guys - I woke up this morning all sweaty and feeling very sick. I have a sore throat, chills and bad cough. I can feel the extra mucas in my lungs.

Do you have a fever ?

Yesterday I talked on the phone with a friend of mine who works at the hospital, they had their first COVID19-related meeting (this is in France). The masks they need (the anti-tuberculosis ones) are in shortage and currently un-orderable. His unit has 8 left and they're too old. They also need a lot of eye-protections which can be ordered currently. They have a lot of ventilators too.

Other informations :

COVID19 initial symptoms are : strong fever + moderate fatigue that quickly clear (48hrs) followed by a strong, enduring wet cough. NO nasal congestion. Note the difference with the regular flu, which is, typically : intermittent fever and continuous, severe fatigue for several days accompanied by everything else (sore throat, nasal congestion, headaches and dry cough turning after a few days into a wet cough).

Regular flu attacks the upper lungs, and once you're cleared you're not supposed to catch it again that year. COVID19 attacks the lower lungs (immediate wet cough with a lot of mucus going up). Re-infection resumes attack through the lower lungs + attacks heart tissue. Stays in the system for a very long time. Oral swabs are apparenty not reliable. They can't tell if it can remain dormant and reactivate later or if people just get it again.

Interesting fact : earlier this week they also received new jugs of disinfectant (the product used to bathe instruments in and clean surfaces everywhere). The service note told them to ditch the old ones even if they have a lot of stock and use the new ones. This new product has to be used for 15 minutes instead of 5 minutes previously, and the label mentions "novel coronavirus". According to the label, that product was manufactured in january, before the disease even had the name COVID19. They thought it was interesting and are wondering whether the virus has been around for quite longer than what is being said.

Food for thought : "strong fever + moderate fatigue that quickly clear (48hrs) followed by a strong, enduring wet cough" is exactly what I and most of my colleagues caught late December to mid January at work. Could it be possible that we already had it and didn't even know ?

CNN-Several Iranian government officials have coronavirus

Iran’s Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, Masoumeh Ebtekar, is the latest high-profile government official to test positive for novel coronavirus.

Two members of parliament, including the chair of the parliamentary committee for national security, have also been infected by the virus.

One of the country’s top clerics, Hadi Khosroshahi, died on Thursday after he contracted the sickness.

Deputy Health Minister Iran Haririchi announced on social media Wednesday that he tested positive for COVID-19 — just 24 hours after he tried to downplay the threat of the virus in a press briefing.

Ebtekar, one of Iran’s most high-profile female politicians, was last seen at a cabinet meeting Wednesday with President Hassan Rouhani. During the meeting, Rouhani warned about COVID-19 turning into a “weapon at the hands of our enemies” for “propaganda” purposes.

Iran has emerged as a regional breeding ground for the pathogen, with the most confirmed cases — 245 cases including 26 deaths — in the region. The vast majority of coronavirus cases across the Middle East have been linked to Iran.

no need to wear mask if you're not sick.

Tariro Mzezewa, a New York Times travel reporter, tells CNN the measure is not necessary unless you are sick or are interacting with sick people.

"If you're not interacting with somebody's who's sick or you're not the person who's sick, you don't really need a mask. The people who are sick need those, and you know, there are various kinds of masks. CDC has a whole guide on its side that's breaking down the differences between the kinds of masks and so on. If you're not the sick one, you probably don't really need it," Mzezewa said.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend Americans wear surgical masks in public. Surgical masks are effective against respiratory infections but not airborne infections.

by Anonymousreply 544February 27, 2020 2:19 PM

"If you're not interacting with somebody's who's sick or you're not the person who's sick, you don't really need a mask."

From FUX: Trump says Pelosi trying to create 'panic' with coronavirus comments

Trump called Pelosi “incompetent” and accused her of using the virus for a political reason during a press conference where he sought to minimize fears of the virus spreading and announced that Vice President Mike Pence will head up Washington’s response to the outbreak.

“She’s trying to create a panic and there is no reason to panic,” Trump said. "All they are trying to is get a political advantage, but this shouldn’t be a political thing.”

by Anonymousreply 548February 27, 2020 2:42 PM

but it’s fashionable to wear a mask nowadays. also before this virus, when i saw people wearing them, i thought them folks area weird. not anymore.

by Anonymousreply 549February 27, 2020 2:43 PM

But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it "does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19."

Dr. Frank Esper, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, explained the circumstances when some really sick people should wear a mask.

"If they are coughing, if they are feeling like they have symptoms, we do ask them to put on mask when they are coming to our waiting room or ER or into a public space," he said. "It helps prevent the spread of infection."

Esper and other experts say washing your hands frequently is the best way to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses like coronavirus or, more commonly, the flu. The CDC advises washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

Pictures taken around the world show some people wearing surgical face masks in public while others appear to be wearing respirators, which the CDC says are used to reduce a wearer's risk of inhaling hazardous airborne particles, gases or vapors.

The CDC says it "does not recommend the routine use of respirators outside of workplace settings (in the community). Most often, spread of respiratory viruses from person-to-person happens among close contacts (within 6 feet). CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, such as avoiding people who are sick, avoiding touching your eyes or nose, and covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue."

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar addressed the issue of different kinds of masks on Wednesday before a House Appropriations subcommittee. He was asked about N95 masks, which are respirators that the CDC says filter out at least 95% of airborne particles. These masks require proper fitting and training to work effectively, and officials do not recommend that the public use them.

Azar said people mistakenly have a sense that "the mask" is the "be all, end all of either preparedness or response activities."

"It's an element in our armamentarium, mostly for health care workers," he said. "And that's that N95 mask that's actually fitted. It has to be carefully fitted, and it can protect the worker."

Disposable surgical masks also are not recommended for people unless they're sick or caring for someone who's ill.

Azar said wearing masks "could actually sometimes be more harmful to you than not wearing a mask, because if it's not fitted right you're going to fumble with it. You're going to be touching your face, which is the No. 1 way you're going to get disease, is unclean hands touching your face."

Following the SARS virus outbreak in the early 2000s, which also originated in China, researchers in Australia wanted to test data that suggested transmission of the viral respiratory infection could be reduced with the use of face masks as well as other infection control measures.

The study, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases in 2008, found that masks were 80% effective in protecting against clinical influenza-like illness when worn consistently — but there was a catch. The researchers noted that "compliance with mask use was less than 50%," meaning more than half the people in the study did not actually keep wearing them as directed.

The study found there wasn't much difference between the two types of masks tested, P2 respirator masks (comparable to N95 masks) and surgical masks.

*Two months passed from the start of the outbreak in 2015 before Pence declared a public state of emergency.

*The spread of the disease was attributed to people injecting Opana, an addictive painkiller, with shared needles. But Pence didn’t agree with federal health experts that distributing clean needles was a good idea.

*As cases spiked, Pence reportedly turned to prayer.

r565- I bought a roku tv for my sick Dad (you can get one for $150-$250) and had him connected to all of my streaming accounts. He was 74, and was able to navigate the tv for content. For some reason, he couldn't handle the Roku attached to the tv, which I got for him initially.

by Anonymousreply 579February 27, 2020 4:12 PM

No matter how you choose to do it Roku is a great investment.

WaPo's Mike DeBonis:

Nancy Pelosi says Pence called her and she told him she had concerns about him in #coronavirus role based on his record on abortion, HIV etc. Said the response has to be "about respect for evidence based decision-making."

I bet Pence is using the power of prayer to solve the coronavirus problem in the US.

You got me, R576. Boy you're smart.

by Anonymousreply 584February 27, 2020 4:50 PM

How do we even know how many cases are in the US since we don’t have very much testing capability? How many people have recently returned from Italy or South Korea and may be infected? How are Europe And Asia diagnosing the virus cases?

by Anonymousreply 585February 27, 2020 4:51 PM

Those rushing out to get supplies, you might want to do it when the least amount of people are in the store. So, very early morning or late at night.

I'm waiting for the Calvin Klein boutique face masks to go on sale. They look like mini tightly whities, but come in colors. I'll be ordering the Rainbow Packs.

Miami Herald: A Florida man who felt ill upon returning from China went to the hospital for coronavirus test. Two weeks later, he got a bill for $3,270, of which he is responsible for $1,400, thanks to a crummy junk insurance plan the Republicans like to tout as an alternative to the ACA. His insurer also told him he'd have to provide additional documentation: three years of medical records to prove that the flu he got didn’t relate to a preexisting condition.

[quote] The Italians are so fucking stupid. There are church clusters in Singapore and half the people who are infected in S. Korea are in a religious group. Now they gonna see thousands more infected...

Religious functions are suspended in Northern Italy regions since last Sunday night.

Well, technically mass still takes place daily but behind close doors with the priests alone.

CNN-Italy won't close its borders, official says

Pierpaolo Sileri, Italy's Deputy Health Minister, said the country does not plan on closing its borders as officials work to stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

"I don’t think right now there is any reason to close the border, especially because the two areas are very well confined and we know exactly the two major outbreaks and all the people that we found all around Italy – which are very few – are coming from that area," Sileri said.

Sileri was also clear in his views about the fear and ‘paranoia’ the Coronavirus has created:

“I think paranoia and anxiousness and panic will run much much more than the virus and we had problem with this in the last few weeks. I think we should teach people what coronavirus is, transmission, and help people to understand much better the situation…this is the first epidemic event in era of social media, and this doesn’t help, absolutely doesn’t help. I think the best thing is to communicate, be transparent, sharing data and explaining exactly what coronavirus is."

Check out Australian Prime Minister's speech yesterday (Feb 26) announcing Coronavirus Emergency Plan. Notice the following: Leader is calm, respectful to audience by providing factual data on virus spread, mitigation actions, rationale for mitigation actions and proposed future mitigation strategies to KEEP AUSTRALIANS SAFE as a Number One Priority. Orange Anus appeared in bright bubble gum tie meandering in (typical) incoherent manner at last night's news conference contributing nothing worthwhile or informative to the public about the virus. In fact, Donny Two Scoops downplayed the virus, "low risk", and nothing to worry about.

Why're you looking at me?

by Anonymousreply 596February 27, 2020 5:33 PM

I agree with others speculating that Trump named Pence as overseer for this situation so the VP could take the blame and the shame when things spiral out of control (which they might, but who knows?). then Trump will "regretfully" unload Pence as VP for re-election and pick someone else (Nikki Haley, Ivanka, yadda yadda). Either way, I think this is a backhanded shiv to Pence and I can't help but enjoy it if it turns out to be exactly that plan.
