CoronaVirus Freakout 6: One Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest!

Continue discussion of supply chain disruptions, Brad Pitt’s marvelous performance in 12 Monkeys, the rate of spread becoming exponential, Wuhan BSL-4, R-naughts, and the real time breakdown of global travel.

I work in a western US state department of public health. Honestly what shocks me most is that there is NO information trickling down from anywhere from up high — not even through informal channels.

This is really bad.

by Anonymousreply 1February 22, 2020 2:24 AM

I had my helixes crossed for "Pandemic at the Disco".

by Anonymousreply 2February 22, 2020 2:25 AM

Tell us more, R1. How bad?

by Anonymousreply 3February 22, 2020 2:28 AM

I have the virus!

It's hard to breathe and I think I've only got a few days to live now. Will keep you hoes updated.

R1 I declare it is a major and most intentional downplay of the circumstances. I cannot claim any special or prescient knowledge, other than my own false sense of mastery of the markets, but I've recently converted my stock portfolio into bonds:T-notes, US Treasury bonds, and I have left a slew of cash in my brokerage account.

i have it on somewhat good authority from friends at hedge funds in Singapore, NYC, and my own counsel at UBS that many are getting out. Warren Buffet has sold nearly a third recently, and Jeff Bezos has sold 2/3 of all his stock (including Amazon) in recent days. i shall avoid declaring worldwide depression, yet an over-correction has been in store for quite some time before Yellow Death Grip. I fear a worldwide recession is to come in the next two quarters.

by Anonymousreply 7February 22, 2020 2:32 AM

You put it better than I ever could, R7.

I mean “bad” as in there’s a lockdown on any information. Unheard of.

by Anonymousreply 8February 22, 2020 2:37 AM

I think there are no cases other than those mentioned in the USA, I know because there would be much more cases, people cannot keep secrets and this virus spreads FAST... You won't be able to hide anything

by Anonymousreply 9February 22, 2020 2:37 AM

Concerning R-588 in the previous thread about the NY health emergency laws. That could of been used during the AIDS crisis to round up the gays. People don’t realize NY has a lot of draconian laws on the books that can strip rights. That law basically allows for CV cases and their acquaintances etc to be “detained” and removed from gen pop for 60 days without any legal ramifications, it’s similar to the mental health laws which allow the same including electro-shock therapy...

by Anonymousreply 10February 22, 2020 2:43 AM

News about this thing is almost becoming a bit too much. I'm going to Japan next month and just going to hope for the best. I've got a bottle of elderberry syrup for my immune system. Other than that, I'll stick to washing my hands for 20 seconds at a time.

by Anonymousreply 11February 22, 2020 2:44 AM

I'm OK with "One Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest" R2. But I'll keep suggesting "Pandemic! At the Disco" as long as we continue this series of threads.

by Anonymousreply 12February 22, 2020 2:45 AM

I think our only hope of avoiding a worldwide pandemic is if this virus is the type to fizzle out in spring. What does Punxsutawney Phil have to say this year?

by Anonymousreply 13February 22, 2020 2:45 AM

R10l, Thank you for not overlooking my post.

by Anonymousreply 14February 22, 2020 2:45 AM

Cheers R8. China has massively flatlined now. There is no longer any correlation b the spreading of the virus, its implications, and the markets. It is a well known fact the exchanges have been jammed with money flooding in from central banks. It is clearly untenable. Most advisors tell people to take fewer risks, but to remain in. I think it is highly questionable advice, unless one is very young, or has only 10-15% of their worth invested. I have a few friends who have recommended placing "puts", or betting against things. That is a devious practise involving knowledge above my pay grade, and quite frankly I don't think most older people are comfortable with those options.

by Anonymousreply 15February 22, 2020 2:46 AM

R7

A week ago I was more concerned with supply chains.

Now I’m literally worried about dying.

Although most fatalities are among older patients, the potential for reinfection and complete overload of the healthcare system could turn a fairly treatable case into a fatality.

Pandemic! At the disco! ——Definitely needs to be part of the next thread title. I just picked the title that spoke to me at the moment.

Eldergays appreciate it, I’m sure.🖤

Seriously, if you’ve never read the book or seen the movie “one flew over the cuckoo’s nest”, it’s a classic for many reasons. Kesey nails the 2020s.

The people “freaking out“ in the first thread would have been thrown into asylums. Any information that disrupts the narrative must be suppressed. Sanity is only agreeing with the status quo.

Many of the same themes are at play right now.

If you start telling your neighbors that they should stock up on canned soup and bottled water and certain medicines, they will look at you like you are a freak. I doubt that will be the case by the Ides of March.

by Anonymousreply 16February 22, 2020 2:47 AM

The Abels have both been diagnosed with pneumonia and their son and daughter-in-law want them out of Japan RIGHT NOW, going as far as starting a Twitter account for the sole purpose of appealing to Donald Trump as daddy is a ‘uge fan, bigly. They don’t have tests to accurately diagnose the disease in the vast majority of hospitals.

The CDC is expediting tests, which means a delay of several days.

New York and Florida are ignoring the law by refusing to reveal coronavirus infections inside the state.

The explosion of cases in Iran and South Korea and Japan and Singapore should scare the fuck out of everyone. The fatality rate of those cases is 20 times higher than seasonal flu, and twice as infectious.

The survivors are getting expert medical care. The United States has fewer than 1 million hospital rooms, a fraction ICU. When you consider the disparity between infection and medical care availability, the potential for unimaginable death rates...Fuck, I hate going down this mental rabbit hole to the “darkest timeline”.

by Anonymousreply 18February 22, 2020 2:53 AM

R16 I appreciate your remarks, and agree, though I must say I'm not afraid of dying. I have stocked up though; I began quite awhile ago really. I thought it was very bad from the start. Just looking at those markets, having been to China myself, (no soap in the loos ANYWHERE), and considering all those pikey little eateries, I had no faith they'd be apt to contain this.

I've stocked up some stuff. I have about 6 to over 12 months of some medicines and will continuing buying more over the next few weeks.

I've also stocked up on cat food (at has a long used by date) and canned and bottled food for myself that have long used by dates. Aside from that there is much more anyone can do.

The medical profession still don't know much about the virus and that is normal for new viruses.

Worst case scenario: 80% + of the world's population infected with 20+ mortality rates - no medical health system in any country on the planet will be able to handle the case load. Even worse: reinfection which could result in much higher morality rates.

Best case scenario: The virus starts to weaken and becomes nothing more than a common cold like the four other coronaviruses that have long been around.

Individual countries needs to start closing their borders quite frankly. The longer that countries can keep this out of their population the longer they have to prepare for it and also hopefully more knowledge of it.

by Anonymousreply 21February 22, 2020 3:06 AM

IF this virus takes hold I want you all to remember the Aids epidemic and how those with it, were treated.

I say this because I know someone that was evacuated on that first plane from Wuhan. I warned them not to tell people that he was there because it would not go over well. Well he was interviewed by two local tv stations and NPR. Now people are saying nasty things on Twitter etc. and I told them now to watch their backs because there are so many crazy people out there.

just be careful how you treat people.

by Anonymousreply 22February 22, 2020 3:06 AM

R18 I heard on an American radio programme recently (I live in the States) that the US has only 920 K hospital beds available during good times. Apparently with the influenza complications this season, hospitalisations are up above 250K, and in many small community hospitals and medical centres, there aren't any beds available save for Emergency Departments. This wouldn't bode well if the virus takes hold here.

by Anonymousreply 23February 22, 2020 3:07 AM

This is R21. I'd also wager that there is an 90% chance that the Tokyo games will not be held.

I'm still shocked that Japan let all those people off the cruise ship mingling in with the general population in Tokyo. At least the ones in hospitals and that have been taken back to their countries of origin are in quarantine. Pity help the poor 1,000 or so staff on the ship.

by Anonymousreply 24February 22, 2020 3:08 AM

Once this takes off in America it’s going to be hard to contain.

1. Americans are too vain to wear face masks.

2. They’re too addicted to money and Social Media to stay in and “self-quarantine”.

Basically King Trump’s dream of martial law might happen.

One for every 370 people.

Overload of the system is going to be bad. Is that like reverse iatrogenic?

R27

Pray that your ignorance protects you.

If you haven’t looked at the numbers in South Korea, or Italy, or Iran, then you are doing yourself no favors by posting stupid bullshit.

Cases are doubling every few hours in some places.

I held out some hope that asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic individuals comprised 80% of the infected population. The last 48 hours has destroyed that possibility, considering the speed of onset and severity of the symptoms in some of the cases outside China.

by Anonymousreply 29February 22, 2020 3:20 AM

Our healthcare system is a flaming dumpster fire of insanity. Do you think the administration of any hospital will show up as they always do before the doctor looks at you to "get your info", ( health insurance) when you go in when the place will be overwhelmed? What do you think the insurance companies are going to do when this goes south? You think they will take the hit for all the costs of the insane prices that are charged? Anyone thinking insurance company bailout if this gets out of hand?

Hospitals in the US are run for profit, not for care. The whole idea is to get you in, bang your insurance for 5 grand, then send you home three hours later. Anything even fractionally approaching a run on the hospitals will cause a collapse of a teetering system waiting to fall over and crush itself under the insurance companies.

I do not know how many people from other countries read this, but thank your lucky stars that you are NOT in the US during this, as it will get real ugly, real fast. Our CDC is out to lunch, Our monkey-fucker president gutted the budget for things like this and fired all the people. All we will have now is Karen from billing calling you for your insurance on your cell phone while she is at home, so the billing will be processed before they look at you and the thousands in the tents in the parking lot with armed security.

We have no backup. Our government has been dismantled by right wing nuts and end-timer fuckstick Christians. IF we make it through this, it will be a whole new ballgame.

by Anonymousreply 30February 22, 2020 3:21 AM

It is amazing to me how many Chinese are still travelling the globe currently. I recently came back from Grand Cayman, and I've never seen so many Chinese there before. It's bonkers really how they're still getting out and about.

A friend recently visited her nephew at a boarding school in Switzerland, and she said Chinese tourists were crawling all over the place. I wonder if these are the few rich 10% who fled in droves (5M estimated) before the lockdown, and they merely continue to travel? Some German friends of mine suggest they figure many who can afford to, refuse to return, and would rather seek better healthcare whilst abroad if they fall ill.

It's very disturbing how many people are getting around the travel bans. Australia's Foreign Chinese students are being offered subsidies to enter via a third country to return and continue their studies. They've been offered elaborate packages which include stays at four and five star hotels in UAE, Japan, Thailand, and even Iran. I think Iran is now off the table however with the cases emerging there. All in all, in addition to these subsidised packages, they've also been promised 1,500 Australia Dollars upon there return. Unbelievable really how dependant so many Universities are on Chinese students.

by Anonymousreply 31February 22, 2020 3:31 AM

I’ve been following coronavirus news since January, R29. I was IN ASIA wearing the damn N95 masks while the world started instituting travel bans from Wuhan.

You guys - like Reddit - are being the hugest goddamn MARY!s every time new cases pop up. NEWSFLASH: once testing becomes more common then yes - more people will be diagnosed with the new coronavirus.

This isn’t shocking, doomsday level information. Yes, THOUSANDS of people - maybe even millions! - have been or are infected with respiratory COVID throughout Asia and beyond. It’s been a month. People aren’t dropping dead en masse throughout Asia’s largest cities. Densely populated and in many countries, absolutely filthy and polluted cities!

Yeah. I read about COVID. I know China is a lying shithole. I’m sure thousands are infected and no one even knows it. But the doomsday hysterics are so, SO unwarranted.

Socialist health systems will be overrun even faster. Don’t pat yourself on the ass until you pull your head out of it.

Do you believe that bureaucratic systems will have any greater capacity to ramp up treatment?

by Anonymousreply 33February 22, 2020 3:38 AM

I agree with R32. There are 1.4 billion people in China. Relatively few of them are sick, even in Wuhan, a city of 11 million. The disease is contagious and can be deadly, but it is not spreading like wildfire. Not yet, anyway. It’s not time to panic yet.

by Anonymousreply 34February 22, 2020 3:50 AM

Hey R33, it's time for your break from the republic ass-clown posting hive. Get back here in 15 minutes or you are docked pay. What do you think we are? Socialists?

by Anonymousreply 35February 22, 2020 3:54 AM

R34 It's only not spreading like wildfire in Wuhan because the city has been in lockdown for weeks. If people had been going about doing what they normally do there would be a couple of million cases in Wuhan by now.

Many Chinese people who were on holiday in Australia when the news broke of the virus have had their visa extended so they don't have to go back to China which is completely understandable. Whilst numbers are apparently down at restaurants in heavily populated Chinese suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne the Star Casino in Sydney is still racking in big bucks from the Chinese people they had their visa extended and love to gamble. So whilst no 'new' gamblers from China are able to enter Australia the ones that were already here are keeping business running high at the Star Casino.

by Anonymousreply 36February 22, 2020 3:55 AM

South Korea reported 142 new cases, up 70% in one day, to 346; The country also reported its second death.

R34

Apparently symptoms become much worse after age 50. Then again, some high profile cases have been in their 20s and 30s. If half the country gets sick and 15 million need hospitalization, 14 million of them are fucked.

We don’t have enough hospital beds.

Even if they invented a vaccine tomorrow, and could cure all future cases, the impact on supply chains worldwide are already evident.

The problem isn’t “we are all going to die of coronavirus“, it’s the fact that China is so deeply integrated into global supply chains that massive disruption in that country will have unexpected knock off effects down the line and create disruptions at the retail level.

If it became epidemic inside the United States, very few people would eat at restaurants, or mingle in bars, or attend concerts or movies. Semi-quarantine would manifest naturally.

Living standards would plummet, commercial activity unrelated to the disease would collapse, service/retail staff would be terminated, and civil unrest would bubble closer to the surface.

I’ve tried to be optimistic and skeptical, but the numbers are disconcerting.

The doctor at the link has been very skeptical about the pandemic, posting videos daily for almost a month, but has become “less encouraged” over the last few days.

He’s scared.

by Anonymousreply 38February 22, 2020 4:05 AM

R37 Some of the 'high profile' cases are doctors on the front line in Wuhan. I suspect they have been exposed to the virus over and over again and working 20 hours a day.

I saw an excellent graph the other day (which I'll post if I can find it) that outlined the morality rates for each 10 year age bracket. It started with something like 0 - 9 - zero deaths, 10 to 19 - 1 death, and goes up.

The morality rate get worse for each ten year age group and the 80s and over being well over 10%.

by Anonymousreply 39February 22, 2020 4:11 AM

R39

Mortality for under 20 years old is almost zero.

In age 60s is 20%, 70s is 30% and 80s is 20%.

It’s killing old people but kids are apparently asymptomatic.

Today I saw a story about a 20 year old college girl who spread to her entire family.

Very informative and pragmatic and scary as anything. He is so spot on about paying close attention to how the South Korean cases pan out. South Korea will be totally on top of recording stats and treatment, etc as he pointed out. Ditto Singapore. I'm surprised Japan is so sloppy. I had my flu shot. Why I be okay?

*twirls hair*

by Anonymousreply 47February 22, 2020 4:49 AM

R47 The flu shot does not provide any protection from this virus. However, it helps fend off he regular flu which is a good thing in that you have less chance of getting two viruses at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 48February 22, 2020 4:53 AM

Audio at R41: a lot of it regards Diamond Princess. One comment was they expect additional cases.

The part that refers to predictions about the U.S. generally starts at about 8 minutes in. From the CDC:

“I want to be clear that we’re not seeing community spread here in the audited States *yet.* But it’s very possible, even likely, that it may eventually happen. Our goal continues to be slowing the introduction of the virus into the U.S. This buys us more time to prepare our communities for possibly sustained spread.

“This new virus represents a tremendous public health threat. We don’t yet have a vaccine for this virus, nor do we have a medicine to treat it specifically.“

by Anonymousreply 49February 22, 2020 4:58 AM

If this does become massive( people on 5his thread seem very smart they use words I have to look up) it will be the best thing that will happen to Putin and Rump.

by Anonymousreply 50February 22, 2020 5:06 AM

R49 continued:

“We are now taking and will continue to take unprecedented aggressive action to reduce the impact this virus will have on the communities in the U.S.

“We are working with state, local and territorial heath departments to ready our public health work force to respond to cases, and the possibility this outbreak could become a pandemic.

“I want to direct everyone to a document that will be very informative in terms of what people can expect in the coming weeks if the virus starts spreading in our community. ‘Community Mitigation Guidelines to Prevent Pandemic Influenza United States 2017.’“

by Anonymousreply 51February 22, 2020 5:08 AM

R51, they also go on to say “the day may come” when we have to close schools and businesses.

They also say they’re going by existing documents they have about pandemic flus in general. I think they also mention that they’re bringing up a new website next week specifically about Coronavirus.

by Anonymousreply 52February 22, 2020 5:11 AM

R47 twinky twink: do what I did last week. Review what immunizations you have been putting off and get them now. You do not want to go to the doctor with measles or chicken pox or whatever while this is going on. I’m older than you and I had the flu and pneumonia vaccines in the last couple weeks. Next I’m having the shingles vaccine and maybe tetanus shot. You might as well eliminate as many reasons as possible for going to the doctor. Places like Walgreens and CVS have lists of immunizations you can get there. You are too young for the pneumonia vaccine unless you have a pre-existing condition like an auto immune disorder, are a smoker or have asthma.

The next thing they think may have shortages are OTC meds for coughs and congestion, like Mucinex or cough syrup. If you buy some, get an expectorant. Also get Tylenol and at least one other pain killer. Tylenol lowers fever. But you can’t take it for days on end without a break or you could get liver damage, so have another one so you can switch off between the two. Like aspirin or similar. And get some flu meds for the regular flu, just in case you get it.

by Anonymousreply 53February 22, 2020 5:21 AM

R7, You don't have it on good authority that Jeff Bezos has sold 2/3 of his stock in the last few days. He couldn't do that if he wanted to (and since it would badly damage Amazon's stock price if he did, he wouldn't). Sales by large shareholders of public companies are public.

Same with Warren Buffett--not how Berkshire Hathaway works, anyway.

Please educate yourself so you're not such a patsy for sharks like your hedge-fund "friends" in Singapore. You're the definition of "dumb money."

by Anonymousreply 54February 22, 2020 5:51 AM

Thank you for the advice r53 but dont let the name fool you. I posted as Twinky Twink and I'm 62. I need a shing)es vaccine and maybe a tenus I need some bottled water. Cans of tuna,Vienna sausage, peanut butter, crackers and beans. Anything else?

I don't understand how anyone can stick up on medications for a year. Most of mine are generic and I can only buy with a copay but doesnt cost much without insurance. One I have is a blood thinner isnt generic would probably cost without insurance.

by Anonymousreply 55February 22, 2020 5:59 AM

I think Muriel has taken control of the CVF threads now.

by Anonymousreply 56February 22, 2020 6:04 AM

I have heard and read in a number of places that these kinds of respiratory viruses are less virulent in the heat of summer. It's spring in central China right now. Summer weather will arrive in late April there. I'm hoping that the rapid spread of coronavirus in the US will coincide with our summer weather and lessen the severity.

by Anonymousreply 57February 22, 2020 6:42 AM

R57 Maybe. It depends of the virus. But think back over your life and try and recall all of 'summer' colds you have had. More than you think.

Most viruses are worse in Winter but a number hang around throughout summer including the other known mild coronaviruses that have been circulating since the 1960s (that's when they were discovered I believe).

On the other hand the time of year made no difference to the lethal 1918 'Spanish Flu'.

Prepare for the worse. Hope for the best.

by Anonymousreply 58February 22, 2020 6:52 AM

R55, if you can’t get blood thinners, one possible substitute would be Bayer low dose aspirin in a pinch. Hopefully it won’t come to that, but I read a lot of China’s manufacturing has come to a halt and they have a backlog. People are starting to be concerned there could be medication shortages. Next time you call your doctor for refills, ask for ninety days. The pharmacy can split it up for you so it will cost the same.

If you’re diabetic and can’t have rice, quinoa is a lot lower glycemic index (Costco). I went to the Costco business center and they had a ton of individually packaged snack foods for vending machines. Peanuts, almonds, cashews and trail mix, peanut butter crackers, breakfast bars, popcorn, also dry Gatorade powder mix, Tang and Country Time lemonade mix. The business center also had 25 lb and 50 lb bags of dry black beans, red beans, garbanzos and pinto beans if you want some variety.

Lentils are also really good for you and are low glycemic index. They come in black, green, red (orange) and brown. Try an ethnic food store, Indians use a lot of lentils because you don’t have to pre-soak and they cook relatively fast. Supermarkets now have chickpea (garbanzo) pasta and red lentil pasta, they have less carbs than regular pasta. I went to Sams Club today and bought a few spices, bay leaves in particular. Bay leaves are good for putting in the container you put your dry rice and beans in. The smell repels insects. Some other helpful spices are mint (settles an upset stomach) turmeric (blood thinner, good for inflammation and arthritis pain), garlic is an anti inflammatory, parsley and ginger (aid digestion). Cinnamon lowers glycemic index. So does apple cider vinegar.

If you’re eating a lot of rice, a good breakfast is leftover rice, raisins or Craisins and sliced almonds or chopped walnuts with cinnamon and soy milk. The ingredients all keep very well. Some other pantry staples that keep well are dehydrated mashed potatoes, no salt added corn, black beans, and no sugar added peaches. Watch your salt content carefully because all canned food has salt unless it says it doesn’t. Get some canned soup and canned meat like canned chicken, sardines (Costco) or low sodium spam. Look for dehydrated ingredients like taco spice mix and gravy packets, and spice blends like lemon pepper for poultry and fish and a spice blend for meat. Get bullion cubes or Better then Bullion jars (Costco, Sam’s), so you can make soup out of leftovers. Canned Tomato paste and stewed tomatoes with some Italian seasoning, salt and pepper and a little parsley make a good tomato base for minestrone soup. If you have a rice cooker, instant pot or crockpot, you can make soups in them, and red beans and rice. Or a wok or soup pot. A good basic brown lentil soup is lentils, onions, tomato base and pork, sausage or bacon. Red lentils with onion, carrot and celery and chicken broth are good.

Some other things that are useful: canning jars, metal lids keep better, Costco has black plastic shelving units that are easy to assemble and knock down with no tools for about $30. Ace Hardware has brown glass canning jars, Walmart has clear ones. Get a canning jar funnel, it has a wider bottom. Get 1 gallon ziplock bags. Get at least one manual can opener, also Winco carries 5 gallon food grade pails with spinner lids that are good for storing grains and beans. Throw a few bay leaves in.

About the gravy packets, years ago I read an account of a guy who was stuck in a war zone for months. They couldn’t go out because snipers would shoot at people just trying to get food. He had some suggestions about things he wished he had. One was spices, sauces and gravies. He said if you have to eat the same old rice and beans again, you get very tired of it and even some plain gravy makes it palatable so you can eat it. For the U.S., I’d add bottled Mexican hot sauce like Cholula, which has vinegar in it so it lasts a long time, soy sauce, maybe a Louisiana Cajun sauce, or Tabasco and check out the spice combinations at Sam’s Club if you have a card. They have a lot of spice combos like dried taco sauce, ranch dressing powder mix, and others that will spice up soup and beans and rice as well as meat.

R55 I suppose it depends where you live with medications and what the medications are for. I live in Australia which has some advantages. Most of of medicines are produced in the country, however goodness knows where the ingredients come from. Also because medications are very cheap in Australia I barely noticed the excess spending of stock piling them.

I also noted that most of my medications have very lengthy 'use by' dates so I'm stocking up on them. Besides, I already had a years worth stockpile of two medications (one for headaches and another for my stomach) because I've been long mindful of a possible pandemic for decades - even when I travel overseas I take way more than I actually need and ironically enough those are my 'must have can't live without ones', so I never want to be caught without any.

It was interesting when doing the shopping on Friday as per usual that hand cleaning fluids were 'sold out'. I do have some but I was going to get some more. Masks are a waste of money.

R64, in the U.S., places like Costco are now prominently displaying bleach wipes and Lysol by the door.

by Anonymousreply 65February 22, 2020 7:46 AM

R65 Actually, when I was at my local chemist in Sydney on Thursday they made face masks prominently advertised - I suppose make a buck whilst they can. Once the virus takes holds I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a hospital, doctors office or chemist (aka drugstore in the US I believe?).

Australia is actually lifting it travel ban on China for those who are enrolled in high school in Australia (though not those from Hubei). I can sort of understand it and it will depend if they meet 13 criteria as well. Also, the individual states and schools for that matter can veto it if they want. I decision will be made in 6 days time on University students.

So far Australia has weathering this well (in terms of quarantine and no clusters taking off) but if the Government lets University students in I predict they will be the last people allowed into the country. As things worsen overseas they Government Australian Government WILL close boarders - they have basically said as much. They have stated that the health and well-being of Australians comes before the economy.

They fucked up big time with the bushfires and they cannot afford stuff up here - if they do they will pay dearly for it. I sort of think they won't stuff up. I do feel Australia can effectively keep the virus out of the country and stop it spreading in the next few months at least. Ditto New Zealand who are following Australia's lead with everything as it is within their best interests when it comes to this.

South Korea entering "grave situation" with virus spread, says PMSouth Korea's coronavirus outbreak is entering a “grave situation," the country's Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said during a press briefing, adding the government is "doing its best to prevent the spread."

He urged people to refrain from attending events where many people gather, such as religious events, or to consider other ways such as online meetings.

Chung also said that the government will “sternly deal” with acts that interfere with the country’s quarantine efforts, such as illegal hoarding of hygiene products and mass rallies.

Samsung Electronics said on Saturday that one coronavirus case had been confirmed at its smartphone factory complex in the South Korean city of Gumi.

The plant has been shut down until Monday morning, while the floor where the infected employee worked will be closed until February 25, Samsung said in a statement.

"On Feb. 22, an employee working at Samsung Electronics' Gumi Complex was tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19),” Samsung said.

“The company plans to implement all necessary measures for disinfection and containment promptly."

The company has also identified colleagues who came in contact with the infected employee, and has taken measures to place them in isolation and get them tested.

CNN-Coronavirus fears have pushed the US dollar to a three-year high

The US dollar index reached a three-year high as investors worried about the global coronavirus outbreak are moving their money into the safe-haven greenback.

Investments considered safe in times of market turmoil have been rallying since the outbreak became Wall Street's number one worry in January. Cases continue to rise globally. The full financial and economic cost of the outbreak is incalculable.

But the United States, as well as dollar-denominated assets, are considered to be somewhat shielded from the outbreak's impact.

America's economy is less reliant on trade and exports than its peers, for example. That means the expected slowing of China's economic growth in the first quarter will hurt the United States less than it will other countries.

And the US economy has been going strong and is in its longest expansion in history.

The Atlanta Federal Reserve's GDPNow model forecasts US growth will accelerate to 2.6% in the first quarter. With a tight labor market and modestly rising wages, the American consumer, who is the backbone of the US economy, is in a good place.

Amid all this, the dollar has been rallying. No other currency stands a chance against the greenback's attractiveness, said Francesco Pesole, FX strategist at ING.

by Anonymousreply 80February 22, 2020 2:10 PM

The questions to ask in the event of a pandemic in the US. Will the garbage men pick up the trash and recycling twice a week?

Will those who "run away" from populous cities only to "safe places" find themselves in places with absolutely no substantive health care facilities?

Rather than who will take the subway - how about who will drive the subway trains?

There are SO many unknowns, so many questions.

by Anonymousreply 81February 22, 2020 2:11 PM

Untraceable coronavirus cells have emerged in three countries — and health officials say the elusive strands could be the first sign that the virus is spreading at an uncontrollable pace.

Doctors are unable to identify the source of coronavirus clusters in South Korea, Singapore and Iran, the World Health Organization said Saturday, urging a stricter approach to containing the virus.

“A number of spot fires occurring around the world is a sign that things are ticking along, and what we are going to have here is probably a pandemic,” said Ian Mackay, a researcher at Australia’s University of Queensland.

Doctors began floating fears of a pandemic — which occurs when a disease spreads to two continents — on Friday as two more died in Iran, the number of cases in South Korea doubled, and Italy saw its first death.

In Iran, an untraceable case that’s spread to 28 others is believed to have popped up in the city of Qom.

Hundreds of new cases detected in South Korea were sparked by a member of a church of 9,000 in the city of Daegu, but doctors have been unable to pinpoint the origin.

Doctors fear the spread could quicken and widen if they are unable to identify all those infected and get them into quarantine. Making matters worse, coronavirus symptoms are often so mild that a spreader could be unaware they are infected.

People are unlikely to die from the mild cases, “but it’s really bad news if you are trying to stop a pandemic,” Mackay said of the subtle symptoms.

An official with the World Health Organization warned Saturday that “the window of opportunity is narrowing” to contain the virus.

“We have to prepare at the same time for any eventualities, because this outbreak could go any direction — it could even be messy,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

R86, about ten years ago my dad spent weeks in intensive care. Before that he was often admitted to the ER for various ailments, life threateningly low blood pressure several times. I became pretty familiar with the local hospital and its procedures.

For one thing, if you have a pre-existing heart condition such as congestive heart failure and you have to go to the ER for any reason, mention your heart condition as soon as you check in. Even if you’re not there for that reason. They may prioritize you over other patients. There’s probably other pre-existing conditions that might fast track you, so mention them. If you’re diabetic mention it, I think one time they brought him orange juice because of a long wait.

In my city, check in to the ER is about a five hour wait. Outside of flu season. After that, you get admitted to ER and continue to wait for a bed in the actual hospital while you’re in the ER. About eight hours to get a bed in the actual hospital. My dad would self quarantine during flu season and luckily we never had to go then.

Once admitted into the ER, there’s no guarantee you won’t get a bed in the hall. You won’t get released from your ER bed until there’s a hospital bed. You won’t go to the hospital bed until you are examined by a doctor who will diagnose you and decide if you need to be admitted. That could be several hours. That’s outside of flu season. I’ve seen patients in beds in the hall on a busy Saturday night.

That’s when there’s no Coronavirus. Imagine a badly overcrowded system like this with even a few cases. They would have to slow everything down for isolation procedures. I don’t even know how they could admit suspected Corona cases into the main ER. Theres no way to isolate people, they don’t even have doors. Tents in the parking lot would be more like it.

About intensive care, the ward was pretty small. Each room is tiny, no extra room. The nurses were great, but overworked as it was. Every bed seemed full. My dad had to wait in the regular hospital bed for an ICU bed. At my hospital, all the rooms in the ICU were around the nurses’ station. My dad was on life support. There’s another thing that must be pretty limited. I didn’t see any room for extra patients.

At one point I went to visit a vendor that rented medical equipment. They rented equipment for home health care for pretty sick people. That was limited. Home health care nurses would go to your house and visit and help teach the family to manage the equipment and clean it. Imagine having a home health care nurse that’s been exposed to Coronavirus visit your family with no symptoms, but shedding virus.

I don’t see how this doesn’t turn into China 2.0 if it takes hold here. Isolation units in the U.S. are extremely limited and there’s a vast opportunity for cross contamination of already sick hospital patients, which happened in China. Plus the likelihood of hospital staff becoming infected themselves.

From cnn:

"We are clearly at the brink" of pandemic, says top infectious disease doctor From CNN's Chandelis Duster

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN he thinks "we are clearly at the brink" of a coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview with CNN's Michael Smerconish on Saturday, the nation's top infectious disease doctor said: "Our fate is going to be determined by the ability of countries outside of China that have travel-related cases. And now they're starting to develop sustained transmission from person to person to person."

"So when you get countries like Japan and South Korea that have these cases that are person to person to person without any real ability to point to where it came from, that's the makings of a pandemic," Fauci said. "And if you have multiple countries like that, then the horse is out the barn. And it's going to be very difficult to prevent more cases from coming here to our own country."

Fauci said, however, that the risk to the US is still "very low," but warned that could "change rapidly." He also said evacuating Americans off the Diamond Princess cruise ship was a "difficult decision," but he believed it was "without a doubt the correct decision."

R102 I had posted about this strange change days ago. It seems the Chinese have taken a second turn in their accounting after the 15K single-day uptick in cases was announced. The figures have appeared lower due to not counting those without symptoms, regardless of test results. They simply go into the suspected cases tally.

This change was widely broadcast in HK & Singapore. The Straits-Times is a good source for further explanation; they have a YouTube channel. The Chinese are also said to be back to only counting those with symptoms and chest x-rays or CT scans as "suspected" rather than confirmed. It's quite confusing keeping up with such changes.

Furthermore R108 NEVER did I phrase any such sentence making the direct attribution to COVID-19 for these sales of shares. That is for the individual investors to decide for themselves. Looking at production figures in Germany, France, and China, in addition to the price of coal, gas, tech stocks, etc. one makes inferences of the markets broadly. It isn't just the virus causing people to sell off. It isn't panic, per se either, but a real reckoning of a much needed correction, and the fallout from tne virus just may be the straw which breaks the camel's arse. Don't cherry-pick my words and titty-twist them to construct false arguments, as you shall lose.

by Anonymousreply 117February 22, 2020 4:28 PM

I have no idea what Bezos is doing, but all accounts point to a lot of businesses having to temporarily lay-off or even close due to no Chinese parts available.

By the way, this is how the South lost the Civil War (no heavy industry, it was all up north) and why the UK was on rationing for years during WWII. They simply couldn’t get food imports in enough quantity, let alone household goods, and there were shortages of everything.

The U.S. didn’t do badly because we had heavy industry, manufacturing plants, steel and manufactured our own car parts and consumer goods in large part. Now that’s all gone, and we are exactly where the UK was back then, but much larger.

The virus itself is one part. But will we have rationing of some products, or just have to do without? Already they’re rationing masks in some areas. What about when it comes to clothing, shoes, light bulbs, batteries or construction materials?

Get your car oil changed, air filters and tires checked now. Tires come from China.

A 77-year-old woman who was found dead at her house 50 km south of Milan on Thursday has tested positive for the coronavirus, a local councillor said on Saturday, after a 78-year-old man died of the infection near Padua overnight.

The man’s wife and daughter are among 12 people infected by the coronavirus in the Veneto region. Italy is the worst affected country in Europe, with the bulk of cases concentrated in Lombardy, the country’s financial and industrial heart.

Regional Welfare Councillor Giulio Gallera told reporters the center of the outbreak was Codogno, a small town southwest of Milan where Lombardy’s first infected patient was treated.

That patient was a 38-year-old man, who fell ill after meeting a friend who had visited China. His condition has stabilized, authorities said.

“All those who have tested positive are people who on February 18-19 had contacts with the emergency room and the hospital of Codogno,” Gallera said, adding 259 people had been screened in the area in the past two days and 35 had tested positive.

“A contagion rate of 13% is quite strong,” he said.

Some 50,000 residents in Codogno and nearby towns have been advised to remain indoors. Public gatherings including Sunday masses and football matches have been suspended, and schools and shops have been closed down.

I blame it on those self confessed hospital workers who were/are too stupid or too lazy and choose not to report symptoms that are not the norm. In a case such as this, all it takes is one person to get the ball rolling. Before you know it, what started out as a tiny snowball soon becomes a huge, life threatening boulder.

by Anonymousreply 144February 22, 2020 7:10 PM

Mixed up R144. A snowball of any size can never become a boulder of any kind.

by Anonymousreply 145February 22, 2020 7:23 PM

R138 Their method of counting is unreliable as they exclude people who tested positive if they are asymptomatic. There was also a shortage of tests (I don't know if it's resolved now) meaning they probably prioritised testing people with more severe symptoms.

Why do certain posters such as R54 continue to deny things which they have not researched or fact-checked themselves. It's as if some on these threads have some immediate inclination to insist certain things are untrue, though they are very ill-informed, just very overly confident.

Secondly, do posters such as R54 think none of us scroll back up, and re-read an original post, to see if it has been taken out of context, or that their words are being twisted? Saying one has it on very good authority that people are getting out of the stock market , is not the same assertion as R54's quoting "You don't have it on good authority Bezos or Buffet are getting out". See, it doesn't work that way, to take the objects from the second sentence which follows, and add them to my first sentence, about any authority or source regarding people GENERALLY getting out. That my dear fool, is what we call putting words in someone's mouth.

All of this seems quite trollish to my sense of fair mindedness. When I'm ever wrong in such instances, I do make a reply. Come to think better of it though, I don't deny things I'm clueless about. When something seems incredulous, I simply look it up.

R119, Told you were dumb and you are. You're stupid enough to think that Jeff Bezos selling $3.5 billion of Amazon stock is equivalent to his selling at least two-thirds of his Amazon stock.

Here's the deal, dimwit--Bezos owns more than $120 BILLION worth of Amazon stock. So, no, he's not selling two-thirds of his stake in Amazon, he's selling around 3 percent. And just because you're that mathematically challenged, I'll point out that two-thirds would be around 66 percent.

Bezos sold because A) there was a run-up on Amazon's stock prices that made him even more rich, B) because he likes funding his rocketship company and C) he's going to throw $10 billion at the environment (probably a tax write-off involved, but whatever.

Amazon is looking into how to manage the effects of the coronavirus on global supply chains--that *was* on the front page of the New York Times. You could even make an argument that Amazon will be in good shape in a pandemic as people will go out less and want more things delivered. Basically, Amazon is placing big orders early to compensate for expected slowdowns in the global supply chain.

Like I said, you're the definition of "dumb money." So I'll give you the advice that was given to me years ago--indexed mutual funds. Don't try to outguess the market unless you really know stuff. You don't.

R159 Why must you be so nasty, and only contribute to arguing, and the twisting of peoples' words here? First of all, your figures regarding how much Amazon stock Bezos holds is wrong, not currently up to date: please provide a link to demonstrate such a new position. Bezos has had multiple sell-offs, large and small. The article saying he dumped 2/3 is still out there for you to google! Are you familiar with the other stock Bezos is or now WAS holding? No, you probably have no clue.

You really ought to try contributing something positive to the thread rather than antagonising me, and calling me "dumb money"! I have the money, and I've managed to retire at fifty, so how dumb am I really? I always get a much better than average return annually as well, and I'm no day trader. You probably don't have a baby-toe dipped in yourself, when you deny all the risk currently. Small mind, small money, and small worries. It's far easier for people like you to remain "all in". Give it a rest already dumbkopf. You're idiocy has already been demonstrated by your inability to read, and grasp the finer points. You still cannot deal with reality!

by Anonymousreply 162February 22, 2020 9:52 PM

R160 I happen to be R119. I'm going to find the respective articles which state definitively he has sold 2/3 of his stock. Some people kept saying he never did sell billions because it would make the company look bad, and cause the value of Amazon to fall: more rubbish assumptions as Bezos has been selling off Amazon repeatedly (even prior to his divorce settlement) to finance his Blue Origin vanity project. Some very large, some rather small chunks hete and there. Some here just want to keep claiming what I post is false. Fucking prove it!

The only reason that we have a chance of beating this virus is that it broke out in China. Where else can you quarantine an entire city of over 10 million people for weeks! Certainly the number of infected and dead is much higher than reported but one can not underestimate the scale of what they have done. In addition to the total lock down of Wuhan, over 750 million people in China have been impacted in some way or another by this crisis. Many working from home where possible, extending vacations, etc , etc., In China, people are accustomed to abiding by the law, wearing masks, doing what authorities say, sacrificing comforts, etc. Moreover, the government is sitting on stock piles of money and can afford to lose many thousands of people, if not millions. I can not imagine a similar situation in the west. If it takes hold here, we are totally and completely fucked and not in a nice way. It's game over

by Anonymousreply 167February 22, 2020 10:07 PM

R156 Don’t forget pet food. Also crackers & cheese & cured meat. Cereal and boxed milk with long shelf life (doesn’t need refrigeration). Frozen stuff lasts a long time too. Toilet paper and toothpaste and OTC meds. I’m thinking enough supplies to last a month or so.

by Anonymousreply 168February 22, 2020 10:08 PM

Bezos has unloaded a grand total of 12B USD worth of Amazon stock in the past three and a half years. The majority, has been sold in the last two years. His original holding and position in the company was much less than R159 puts forth. Bezo's wife also received roughly 25% of Bezo's Amazon stock.

The current sell-off, after Friday accounts for a little more than a fifth of his total Amazon holdings, and is reflected in the two-thirds of ALL his stock sold recently, he doesn't just hold Amazon!

by Anonymousreply 169February 22, 2020 10:11 PM

Again, R159 thinks he can do the maths, yet he cannot read. Bezos selling 2/3 of stock he holds, does NOT account to selling 66% of Amazon. My post stated he has sold 2/3 of his stock he holds in general, not 2/3 of Amazon. Who is the dumbkopf now? I'm done with your nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 172February 22, 2020 10:20 PM

R163, Good, please do.

R159, I gave a rough estimate, but we can play this game if you want. Here's a link to the Securities filing from January. At the end of 2019, Bezos owned 57, 551,216 shares of Amazon stock. He controlled 77, 049,423 shares (his ex-wife gave him the power to control her shares as part of the divorce settlement). Over the last 52 weeks, Amazon's stock price has traded between $1,586 and $2,185 per share. On Friday, it closed at $2,092.

Of those 57 million + shares, Bezos has sold since Jan. 31, about 905,00 shares worth $1.8 billion. He sold similar amounts in 2019 and 2017 and has said he does this to finance his rocket company. A quick Google of Jeff Bezos stock sales will turn this number up.

I'm mean and nasty about it because you were pushing bad information--still are. Misinformation is causing a lot of damage--and it's often spread for nefarious reasons--i.e. shortsellers trying to push a stock price down.

by Anonymousreply 176February 22, 2020 10:34 PM

I'm really beginning to believe that we're at the point where the CDC and WHO think there will be a pandemic, that we're past containment and now just trying to slow down the spread in hopes of getting a vaccination sooner.

Meanwhile, they don't want panic.

by Anonymousreply 177February 22, 2020 10:37 PM

I find the choice of phrasing the total in hundreds, rather than thousands is quite generous with the title's attempts at avoiding any sensationalism. 7,700 people (6700 under self-quarantine with local health dept. monitoring) seems large enough to take seriously. I don't believe it reflects well on CDC to decline comments on the Bay Area either. How are they really really defining "medium risk individuals"?

I am hesitant to offer medical advice as I am in no way qualified. But I do have a suggestion that might be helpful.

I am unable to get a flu vaccine because of prior Guillain-Barre Syndrome. A few years back my doctor advised taking L-Lysine during the flu season. I take 1000 milligrams twice daily. Haven't suffered flu since 1993. I do take every precaution to avoid exposure.

I know some use it for viral outbreaks of Herpes Simplex to alleviate symptoms. Perhaps someone here with a PharmD could offer an opinion on L-Lysine, and its ability to disrupt viral replication.

I appreciate everyone posting here. Wishing good health to everyone as we continue to monitor this scary situation.

by Anonymousreply 188February 23, 2020 12:19 AM

R185, the Bay Area will be an interesting study on how this works--tons of well-educated Chinese immigrants who visited China, but are also educated and cooperative enough to stick with self-quarantining.

Back in January when the Wuhan virus was just hitting big, local groups were already cancelling local Lunar New Year parties and the servers at the nearby Ranch-99 were wearing masks and gloves. The concerns were clearly within the Chinese community itself.

I think there haven't been any additional Bay Area cases since the first couple in Santa Clara County, so that's a good sign. At this point, I'm assuming not a lot of people are coming in from China.

The data out of Italy and South Korea are concerning. Too early to fully map, but it looks like the infection rate and transmissibility are HUGE.

When they announce cases in Los Angeles or Chicago or New York or Miami, the country will quickly go into a lockdown mode.

The economic repercussions of such a lockdown are so extreme that they can barely be fathomed.

The good news about the immunity of children and young adults, who currently comprise less than a percentage point of the death total, is hopefully a saving grace.

These young people, as long as they are healthy, rarely experience anything more than mild symptoms but can infect other people. They will become the front line of our interactions. The death of millions of people over age 50 will transfer trillions of generational wealth.

This thing is so big and opaque that it will take weeks to properly understand the dangers and opportunities.

Anyone who believes that life will return to normal in six weeks is delusional. This has been on my radar for almost 6 weeks, and is approaching an inflection point.

R195 South Korea, Italy & Iran have been turning points.

South Korea & Italy may be able to contain it but not a hope in hell with Iran.

I have no doubt other clusters will start appearing in other countries around the world in the coming week or two.

Honestly, if countries don't start shutting their borders by the end of the week they are crazy.

The only thing that has stopped the virus killing big time in China has been the measures they are taking - but as soon as China lifts them back the virus will come.

The only optimistic hope I have is that as the virus progresses it will become more harmless and nothing more than the common cold. On pessimistic side it could also mutate into something even more deadly.

Economically the world is well and truely fucked for years to come.

by Anonymousreply 199February 23, 2020 4:22 AM

A mutant form that is less virulent is as likely as a more virulent mutation. Apparently, infection by the mother confers a degree of immunity to children, and grandchildren, rendering formerly dangerous coronaviruses rather harmless.

China's still on lock-down mode and, even so, seems to be barely keeping control of the spread of the disease. CNN--Global death toll rises to 2,458 as Hubei province in China reports more deaths

The Hubei health authority reported that 96 more people died of the coronavirus in China's Hubei province on Saturday, February 22, raising the death toll in the outbreak's epicenter to 2,346.

Hubei authorities confirmed an additional 630 cases of the virus in Hubei on Saturday, including 32 cases in prison. The total number of cases in the epicenter of the outbreak is now 64,084.

The Hubei report brings the total number of deaths in mainland China to at least 2,441. The global death toll is at least 2,458, with 17 deaths outside of mainland China. Iran has reported five deaths from the coronavirus, while Japan has reported three deaths, and Hong Kong, Italy and South Korea reach reported two deaths. The number of coronavirus cases in Italy has surpassed 100, after 44 new cases were confirmed on Sunday, according to authorities.

Most of the cases are focused in the northern regions of Lombardy (which has 89 cases), Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Piedmont.

Health officials are expected to hold a press conference on Sunday to update the public with the total numbers for the country.

Another doctor dies from novel coronavirus in Wuhan From CNN’s Lily Lee in Beijing

Another doctor in the Chinese city of Wuhan has died after being infected with coronavirus, according to the official WeChat account of Wuhan Xiehe Jiangbei Hospital, where the doctor worked in the gastroenterology department.

Xia Sisi, 29, was admitted to the hospital on January 19, and was then transferred to Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University as her conditioned worsened.

“At 6:30 in the early morning of February 23, 2020, she died at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University after all rescue measures were exhausted. We express our deep condolences to Doctor Xia Sisi's unfortunate passing and condolences to her family,” the hospital said in a statement.

On Thursday, another doctor in Wuhan, 29-year-old Peng Yinhua, also died from the virus. There was national outrage earlier this month when doctor Li Wenliang, who had attempted to raise the alarm about the virus in the early weeks of the outbreak only to be reprimanded by police, died of the disease.

Chinese officials have said that more than 3,000 hospital staff have been infected with the virus.

Italian coronavirus cases surge to 132 as officials struggle to track down patient zero From CNN’s Livia Borghese and Helena DeMoura

Some 132 people in Italy have been infected with coronavirus, the head of the country’s Civil Protection agency, Angelo Borrelli, announced at a Sunday press conference.

Of those cases, 26 people are in intensive care, two have died and one has recovered, he said.

Italian authorities still have not tracked down the first carrier of coronavirus in the country, he added.

“We still cannot identify patient zero, so it's difficult to forecast possible new cases,” Borrelli said.

by Anonymousreply 229February 23, 2020 11:06 AM

r225, the mortality rate is high because they are unable to detect, track down and test largest number of people as fast as possible. Lots of undetected cases. I don't trust the low number of cases in developing countries where lots of people do not have access to proper healthcare. I do not even believe the current number coming from developed Japan and their cruise because the number of new people they test per day is really small. Deliberately not testing/counting certain people and letting out dubious cases run free...

And Europe is not safe (has not been I guess)

by Anonymousreply 230February 23, 2020 11:15 AM

Not only are Iranians heavy smokers (the men anyway with the poor women breathing in all the smoke) the air quality in Tehran is shit (like most Chinese cities) and the health care is in the toilet, partially because of sanctions from the West led by the US which has affected medical supplies for years in Iran.

Memo to all world leaders - have your sanction but medical related material and food should never be included in these actions. Its the little, ordinary people that suffer the most.

Given that 80% of the passengers of that cruise ship were over 60 I would expect more deaths particularly for the 80 years +.

Well, this shit just got real for me: Venice has just cancelled its famous Carneval after three people went to intensive care with Coronavirus. That's never happened before in my memory.

Also, get this: "Bishops in several dioceses in northern Italy issued directives that holy water fonts be kept empty, that communion wafers be placed in the hands of the faithful and not directly into their mouths by priests celebrating Mass and that congregants refrain from shaking hands or exchanging kisses during the symbolic Sign of the Peace ritual." That's pretty radical.

Canned food, medicines, bottled foods, pet food (they all have very long used by dates), tissues, rubber gloves, toothpaste, shaving creaming, razors, pads or plugs for the ladies, etc.

I have said this throughout these posts and I have already stocked up a fair amount of stuff. I don't work so I'll rarely have to leave the house thank goodness.

So how do you not get sick? Does everybody eventually get it, just that some people have natural immunity?

by Anonymousreply 239February 23, 2020 1:22 PM

This is chilling. Many of us used to say that we’d eventually get a severe flu-like pandemic. It was just a matter of when, not if; and I guess this is it.

They’re going to limit or cancel public gatherings. I haven’t heard anybody say that one shouldn’t attend funerals, but I guess that is included in the list of things one should avoid, if possible.

I assume it’s possible for two different pandemics to occur at the same time, right? We can hope that doesn’t happen. It seems unlikely, as these grave pandemics seem to be infrequent.

Their central banks will take measures...Thailand has already cut rates.---------

Two south-east Asian central banks responded on Wednesday to the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak, with Thailand cutting interest rates to a record low and Singapore reassuring the market that its currency had “sufficient room” to ease within its set limits.

Singapore and Thailand are two of the countries most exposed to the virus outbreak, with the second and third largest number of cases, respectively, after China. Chinese tourists accounted for more than a quarter of the 38m who visited Thailand last year, and passenger numbers from the mainland have plummeted in recent days.

The Bank of Thailand reduced its policy rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 1 per cent, saying that the Thai economy would expand at “a much lower rate” in 2020 than its previous forecast, and well below its potential level due to the outbreak, which has hit the country’s tourism sector. Delays in approving the annual budget, and a severe drought, have also weighed on growth.

“There is a huge exposure of the Thai economy to a downturn in outbound travel from China,” said Khoon Goh, head of Asia research at ANZ in Singapore. “The baht has weakened in reaction, along with currencies in the rest of the region.”

“Financial stability became more vulnerable due to the prospect of economic slowdown,” Titanun Mallikamas, secretary of Thailand’s Monetary Policy Committee, said after the body voted unanimously for the cut. “In this situation, there was an urgent need to co-ordinate monetary and fiscal measures.”

The Monetary Authority of Singapore said its policy stance remained unchanged but acknowledged the potential for currency depreciation. Its statement said there was “sufficient room within the policy band to accommodate an easing” of Singapore’s exchange rate to reflect the economic weakening caused by the coronavirus.

If large numbers of people die off and leave their money to relatives, isn’t that inflationary? You have an steady supply of money with a shrinking demand for goods due to fewer people. Or is it insignificant? Also, people will have inherited goods and hence will need fewer new goods. Even things like cars.

You just know Trump will flub his handling of this., He’ll also welcome the opportunity to close the southern border entirely.

by Anonymousreply 260February 23, 2020 3:57 PM

Here are some other things you can do to prepare:

Make sure you’ve got a good medical insurance plan and a good primary care doctor. Medicare often will cover only 80% of a bill, and a long hospital stay could be up around $50,000 dollars! There are so-called “Gap” plans you can buy that cover most expenses that Medicare does not. I’ve got that. After a small deductible, I never see a bill. Make sure you’ve got premium prescription insurance, too.

Buy long term care insurance. It’s the kind that pays for nursing homes and that kind of thing. I’ve got one of those, too.

Buy life insurance for a loved one, and do it soon! They’ll miss your income and an insurance payment will help them manage.

Update your will, identify your passwords in a document in a safe place.

You might want to think about buying a plot or making other funeral arrangements. You will die eventually, anyway. I bought a plot next to my parents because I didn’t want to put it off, and wind up finding that a stranger had snapped it up, so I bought it early.

Stockpile cold and flu medicine. You don’t want to have to go to CVS when you’re half dead with the flu and out of NyQuil.

If you desire particular funeral arrangements, make sure it’s written down in a place people can immediately find. Otherwise, you might be buried weeks before your doc is ever found.

CNN-G20 prepared to act on coronavirus if needed

Current global economic growth remains slow with the coronavirus outbreak posing the greatest risk, finance ministers and central bankers meeting at the G20 summit in Saudi Arabia said in a statement.

Despite that outlook, the G20 said that global economic growth is expected to pick up "modestly" in 2020 and 2021.

"Global economic growth remains slow and downside risks to the outlook persist, including those arising from geopolitical and remaining trade tensions, and policy uncertainty. We will enhance global risk monitoring, including of the recent outbreak of COVID-19. We stand ready to take further action to address these risks," according to the final document of the conference. The host of the G20 meeting, Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Al Jadaan, said that countries will be ready to act on the risk coronavirus poses to commerce.

"We all agreed that all countries and states will be ready to intervene as needed to face these risks and it’ll be a multilateral intervention including the WHO (World Health Organization) to monitor these risks and use relevant policies as needed," Jadaan said.

cnn--White House expected to ask Congress for coronavirus money this week

White House officials are expected to ask Congress for emergency funding this week to battle the coronavirus amid growing fears of a larger outbreak in the US, two officials familiar with the forthcoming request said.

Government aides worked throughout the weekend on the supplemental request, which is still not final but could be sent to Capitol Hill as soon as Monday, said a person familiar with the plans.

That source said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has ruffled feathers through the process by requesting amounts of money that “have been seen as largely out of proportion.” The source noted HHS already has money that could be used for coronavirus issues, but claimed Azar “has been pushing hard for this to overcompensate” for management decisions regarding coronavirus containment that the source criticized.

I really think that the information coming out of Korea and Italy will get much worse over the next 48 hours, and that is assuming we don’t have confirmed cases “in the wild“ in the United States.

If more than a few dozen people test positive in any large metro area, or if a dozen patients in 4 or 5 cities test positive, people will begin hoarding food within hours.

This. Is. Not. A. TEST!

In countries (and places) where there has been little or no person-to-person contact people should just carry on as per usual.

Though I would get into the habit of not touching ones own face, press lift buttons with your knuckle (ditto crossing lights though if the buttons are really big with your elbow). Don't hold onto escalator railings - just stand there. And get use to washing your hands thoroughly.

To really see how this is going to play out watch for developments in South Korea, Italy, Japan & Singapore. There reporting and tracing of this is top-notch (though Japan dropped the ball with the their handling of the Cruise ship).

Observe what is happening in China and Iran but take information coming out of those two countries with a grain of salt. In China's case the CCP lied to the world about when they first was aware of the virus but to be honest the measures they have taken to try and slow it down are to be applauded. With those actions they have helped to give the rest of the world more time.

Iran is having internal issues and their is political in-fighting so some misinformation will come out of there.

The death coming out of Italy and South Korea are disturbing. I don't know the breakdown of the ones from South Korea but in Italy all 5 have been 78 and older (two women, two men - not sure about the other).

Also, a bit of food for though whilst this virus is mainly attacking the 70s and over (the over 80s have horrendous death outcomes) the death rate of people in their 40s aren't too reassuring. At 0.09 that is nearly 1% for an age group that the regular flu barely kills - just makes sick but nothing more. I imagine people in the 40's with normal flu have a percentage of dying something like 0.00000001. So from that to 0.9 is very troubling. These are Chin'a figures though and the outcomes may be better in Western countries for a variety of reasons.

Around 70,000 people are affected by the restrictions in Lombardy, and about 30,000 in Veneto. The figures are based on census data from nine years ago, the agency said.

ABOUT TIME!!!

CNN---Chinese government approves decision to ban consumption of wild animals

China's top political body approved the decision on Monday to ban the consumption and the illegal trade of wild animals, which some experts believe to be the source of the virus.

The National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the ban on Monday in a bid to help “safeguard public health and ecological security," according to Chinese state media.

The move aims to “completely ban the eating of wild animals” while also “cracking down on illegal trade of wildlife,” state media reports.

The use of wild animals for scientific research, medicine and exhibition will now need to go through “strict examination and approval” by the supervising department in accordance with relevant regulations.

This comes after Chinese authorities suspended the trade of wild animals on January 26th in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

CNN-Germany is not planning to cut travel links with Italy

This comes as Italy's outbreak saw confirmed case numbers increase from three to more than 200 over the weekend.

“There is no travel warning for Italy and at this very moment and we are not intending to issue one,” Maria Adebahr, spokeswoman for the ministry, told reporters at a regular news conference.

Adebahr said that Germany updated its travel and security advice on travel Monday morning. It now reads: “If necessary, enquire at the Italian embassy or consulate responsible for you before starting your journey.”

Germany’s health ministry said Monday that the danger to the German population from the coronavirus remained low. However, the health ministry also said that this “assessment could change at short notice.”

CNN-Iranian lawmaker says 50 people are dead, but health ministry says official toll is 12

An Iranian lawmaker has claimed that 50 people have died, and blamed Iran's health ministry for failing to tackle the spread of the virus.

Ahmad Amirabadi Farahani, a lawmaker from Qom -- the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Iran -- suggested that the outbreak was far larger than previously reported.

“10 people are dying in Qom daily, the number of people who have died from coronavirus until last night (Sunday night) is up to 50 people," Farahani told the semi-official News Agency Ilna on Monday.

"The minister of health is to blame,” Farahani added. “Qom is not doing well in terms of the spread of the coronavirus, and I think the government's performance in controlling the virus has failed."

But the health ministry denied his claims during a news conference, with a ministry spokesman saying there were 12 confirmed deaths and 61 confirmed cases across the country.

"No one has access to our information, sometimes there is a misunderstanding, because the symptoms of the flu and [the coronavirus] are similar," Iraj Harirchi, the health ministry spokesman, said Monday.

On Sunday, Iran’s government announced that universities and schools in 14 provinces, including in the capital Tehran, would be closed for a week.

Soccer matches in different leagues will continue but without audiences at the stadiums, according to state news agency IRNA.

It's pretty much a nothingburger, folks. If you're reasonably healthy andliving in a reasonably clean environment and you get it, odds are strongly against your requiring hospitalization, you'll probably think it's a cold or mild flu. They aren't making a big deal out of it or closing borders because for one thing, it's already too late to stop the spread and has been for a long time, and second, because it's just not that bad a virus, *provided* you are reasonably healthy and in a reasonably clean environment. Smokers and the elderly and people who live in squalor might be in somewhat more trouble than from the normal flu, but not much.

CNN-Canada confirms 11th case of coronavirus

In a joint statement, Health Minister Adrian Dix and Dr. Bonnie Henry, health officer for British Columbia, said the affected person, a male in his 40s, was in close contact with a previously reported confirmed case.

“Both cases remain in isolation at home with support and monitoring from public health teams,” the statement said.

“Given the changing dynamics of the outbreak in China and globally, and recognizing we are in the midst of influenza season, we ask all travelers who are returning to B.C. — no matter where they were in the world — to monitor themselves and their children closely for symptoms,” the joint statement said. Adding, “the risk of spread of this virus within British Columbia continues to remain low at this time.”

In total, Canada has 11 total cases of confirmed coronavirus; four in Ontario and seven in British Columbia.

Hi guys. Just went to Walmart and Sams Club this am. Walmart is full to the brim with bags of flour and sugar, piled up to the ceiling of the shelf above. Half an aisle of nothing but bags of flour and sugar, the other half different types of brown sugar and sugar substitutes. The end caps were: 1. Spam and rice; 2. Pancake mix and syrup; 3. Pasta and jars of pasta sauce. Center aisle, full of pallets of extra stock. 1. Vinegar for cleaning, spray bottles and scrubbing sponges. Lots of Gatorade everywhere. Big bags of beans and rice in a store that usually carries 2 pound bags. Zatarains, Rice a Roni, various types of hot sauce, A lot of Rice a Roni. Hamburger helper.

Walmart #2. Same end caps as above. Somebody told them to do this.

Sams. Six different kinds of 25 and 50 lbs bags of rice. One entire wall of the store was half Individual sized bottles of water, the other half, Gatorade. Sodas another aisle, juices another aisle, lots of individually bottled one serving drinks. Lots of hot chocolate and Nesquick, they’re almost out of powdered lemonade. No powdered Gatorade anywhere. Canned six oz pineapple juice and orange juice. Pineapple juice in quart cans. Huge amounts of Zaterains and Rice a Roni. Pallets full.

If you remember, I posted several threads ago about working for a food manufacturer. Back then, in case of bird flu or other suspected pandemic, Homeland Security would brief supermarket execs about what to stock extra. Somebody is telling them to stock Gatorade, never seen so much in my life. Also, very little gallon water jugs, lots of little bottles. Tons of rice. For diarrhea maybe?

The little bottles of fruit juices everywhere, which I’ve never seen in such quantity in big warehouse stores, tell me they expect we may lose power at some point, or be unable to store our stock in our fridges. Lots of shelf stable drinks, and an excess of drinks period.

An elderly couple in front of me bought five packs of toilet paper (36 rolls each), 2 boxes of bleach (3 gallons a box), and Kleenex packs (about six boxes a pack I think). People are getting it.

by Anonymousreply 423February 24, 2020 8:14 PM

Another thing I noticed, Sams club carrying brands they never carry. Rice brands usually found at Costco. Tons of glass bottles of Perrier at $14 a pack. Lots of other brands, a little bit of each. It’s like they’re trying to round up water from anywhere they can get it.

by Anonymousreply 428February 24, 2020 8:35 PM

I think it's safer to assume that all numbers of infections and deaths are under reported. Nobody wants this shit in their countries. Not China, or Japan, or the west. It's bad for business and the economy overall. All countries want their citizens to believe that everything is under control to avoid mass panic. Nobody wants to be dragged out of their homes in China and put in metal boxes or in makeshift hospitals. Sure the number of new infections there are down but maybe some people are just waiting it out with high fevers, etc., behind closed doors. Taking their chances with home remedies and falsely reporting normal temps. Better to hope for the best but plan for the worst

CNN-Number of coronavirus cases in Italy increases to 229

There are now 229 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Italy, according to Italy's National Civil Protection Service.

Here's the breakdown of where those cases are:

172 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Lombardy

33 in Veneto

18 in Emilia-Romagna

3 in Piedmont

3 in Lazio

There are 101 hospitalized patients with symptoms and another 27 are in intensive care. At least 94 are in home isolation, officials said in a statement. Seven people have died from coronavirus in Italy.

CNN-World Health Organization team arrives in Italy

The team will “support Italian authorities in understanding the situation,” the WHO said in a statement. Their focus will be on “limiting further human-to-human transmission,” it said.

“WHO experts are providing support in the areas of clinical management, infection prevention and control, surveillance and risk communication," the statement said. The WHO said it is concerned over what it calls the “rapid” increase in reported cases in Italy.

“However, it should also be noted that based on current data, in the majority of cases (4 out of every 5) people experience mild or no symptoms,” it added.

The bulk of the cases — 167 of them — are in the northern region of Lombardy, whose capital is the city of Milan.

by Anonymousreply 443February 24, 2020 11:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 444February 24, 2020 11:36 PM

R441, no, it’s a virus. If you needed antibiotics, it would be because you got pneumonia as a complication.

R440, I think some people have gotten a cytokine storm. How many died from that cause I don’t know.

R433, Whenever you get back in, look at Costco, Walmart or Sam’s Club stock. Or Gatorade or some bottled water company They’re the only people making money off this. I bet even the rice companies are having a good run. Calrose rice is made in California, but I bet their plastic packaging bags are made in China.

Don’t forget to put gas in your cars.

by Anonymousreply 462February 25, 2020 2:53 AM

R461, are you the person on this thread that’s having a hissy fit every time someone suggests buying food? If you’re that upset, maybe this isn’t the thread for you.

Cat maintenance has been scheduled for a year at this time. Taxes are due. Insurance is expiring in a month and the company I had before was awful. I’m really glad I switched.

I’m also having surgery in a few weeks, so no, I won’t be going anywhere I don’t have to go for several months. That’s been planned for months. So I’ve been stocking up on cat food and supplies for months. I’m not dragging myself out of bed to buy a can of cat food right after surgery. Or people food either. The last time I had emergency minor surgery, I had to do a lot of housework and shopping right after I got out of the hospital, and overdid it so much I nearly had to go back to the hospital again. I’m never doing that again.

Is that all right with you? Do I have your permission to live my life? Pretty please?

by Anonymousreply 463February 25, 2020 3:02 AM

R454 I meant to say 20-year shelf life not lifespan.

by Anonymousreply 464February 25, 2020 3:08 AM

R463 no I’m not “the person”having a hissy fit. I read your post and it was concerning...

I’m the one taking the Tumeric hoping that will help.. but now I’m researching about lead in Tumeric instead.

by Anonymousreply 465February 25, 2020 3:13 AM

Sorry R461, there was a person on this subject about three threads ago who was literally mocking any person that posted that this might turn into a pandemic. They kept saying anybody who said that was crazy. And here we are.

What’s going on with lead in turmeric? I normally take that for arthritis and it’s very effective for that, but I can’t take it again until my surgery is over.

For years other countries have mocked Americans for their high obesity rates. Little did they realize that obesity is a survival strategy when a pandemic interrupts food supplies chains. (Yeah, that's the reason.)

How long can you live off your fat? Sciencefocus.com explains-

[quote] Even if you have lots of body fat left to burn, you can still starve to death if you don’t have enough muscle because vital muscles like the heart will have been weakened to the point where they stop working. For this reason, doctors normally consider 40 to 50 per cent weight loss as life-threatening, regardless of your initial body weight.

[quote] Total starvation is normally fatal in eight to 12 weeks. In less extreme cases, however, where you are still receiving some calories – particularly if these calories include a high proportion of protein – being fat will help you survive much longer, because your body will be able to meet the majority of your calorie requirements from stored fat.

From The Guardian:

"Closing borders, blanket travel bans and more extreme government policies will not stop the spread of coronavirus, according to the head of the World Travel and Tourism Council.

It comes as travel companies face huge economic losses amid fears about the virus. In the UK, the biggest faller in the FTSE 100 was EasyJet, which sank 16.7%, while Tui and British Airways owner IAG were both down by more than 9% at the close.

Gloria Guevara, president and chief executive of the World Travel and Tourism Council called for governments and authorities worldwide not to overreact with disproportionate measures in a bid to control Covid-19.

She said: “Governments and those in authority must not seek to choke travel and trade at this time. Closing borders, imposing blanket travel bans and implementing extreme policies are not the answer to stopping the spread of coronavirus.

“Past experience shows that taking such extreme action has been ineffective at best. We urge governments to explore fact-based measures which don’t affect the vast majority of people and businesses for whom travel is essential.”

As infection numbers continue to grow the World Health Organisation spokesman said on Tuesday that many countries have pandemic plans ready, and some may act on them depending on their situation but WHO itself does not plan “a big announcement.” He added that countries have to be prepared “literally knocking at every door”.

My comment: Gloria Guevara sounds like a completely stupid cunt. Whilst I think its a given that we are in the opening stages of a world flu pandemic travel bans and closing borders along with strict quarantining are the ONLY ways to help slow the spread of the virus and for countries to buy time to start preparing the the worst possible outcome - which is hospitals being swamped with really sick rates. If the disease can at least be slowed hospitals will have a better chance of dealing with serious cases but if they are swamped everyone is fucked.

A hotel in Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands has been locked down after a visiting Italian doctor tested positive for coronavirus.

Hundreds of guests at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace Hotel were initially told to stay in their rooms as medical tests were carried out, Spanish media report.

The doctor is reportedly from the Lombardy region, where Italian authorities are battling an outbreak.

POLITICO: Some officials worry that the U.S. is missing potential coronavirus infections of its own, especially as clusters of cases emerge in countries like Iran, prompting that nation's neighbors Turkey, Pakistan and Armenia to close their borders. The U.S. surveillance effort has been hampered by the failure of the health department’s tests, with public health labs on Monday asking for permission to use their own homegrown tests rather than wait on the CDC.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 516February 25, 2020 1:03 PM

How much good would a mask do, anyway? I see people wearing them and they look thin and ineffectual. If they let air in, how does it keep a virus out?

Maybe it’s a layer of protection, what do I know? I’d think washing hands and keeping them away from your face is as important.

by Anonymousreply 517February 25, 2020 1:09 PM

R517, it's more important for people who come in close contact with the infected (like medical staff). I walk past people who cough with their mouths open every day. Also if you're sick, maybe it prevents or decreases the chances of passing it to others.

Yes, washing hands is important. Don't forget to clean your surfaces with bleach...viruses can like on surfaces for up to 9 days.

by Anonymousreply 518February 25, 2020 1:18 PM

I still don’t get how masks can keep the virus from getting out but not from getting in. Sounds like some kind of one way valve, but I don’t think that’s correct.

For those using turmeric and concerned about lead, a simple test: get a small glass of water, and drop a quarter teaspoon of turmeric on it, wait five minutes. If the powder mostly just drops to the bottom and doesn't dye the water very much, just a little bit yellow, it's probably fine. If it dyes the water *bright* yellow, it's because there is added artificial colour that may indeed contain lead. So no-lead turmeric won't dye the water much, lead-containing will dye it bright yellow. There are youtube vids about it.

R463 I decided to talk with my mom this morning and suggested she stock up on groceries just in case. She’s a new widow. I moved in with her temporarily after my dad died to help her with the house. . I just want her to be prepared if anything happens.

My dad died last year. His official cause of death was ARDS. He had congestive heart failure and COPD. But I remember when the doctor told us he also now had ARDS rushing to google what it was. I had no idea. It was scarey. He was already on life support at that time. But if these viruses can now cause ARDS in people - that’s basically a death sentence.

She also just started working part time at a pharmacy...ugh .. she interacts with a lot of sick people picking up meds. I don’t know why but suddenly I’m uneasy about it.

CNN-Only 12 US labs other than CDC have working coronavirus test kits

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still working to make test kits for the novel coronavirus available to state and local labs. Some test kits initially sent out by CDC were flawed.

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said there are currently only 12 state and local labs in the US that can test samples other than the CDC.

“I am frustrated, like I know many of you are, that we have had issues with our test. I want to assure you that we are working to modify the kit and hope to send out a new version to state and local jurisdictions soon," she said. "There are currently 12 states and localities around the US that can test samples – as well as we are testing at CDC. Four hundred samples were tested overnight, and there is no current backlog or delay for testing at CDC."

She added that commercial labs will "be coming online soon with their own tests."

"This will allow the greatest number of tests to happen closer to where potential cases are,” Messonnier said.

[quote] President Donald Trump told reporters that “we’re very close to a vaccine” while answering questions about the COVID-19 outbreak during a state visit to India, prompting outlets from the Jerusalem Post to the New York Post to write that Trump said the U.S. was close to finding a vaccine for the deadly new coronavirus. The White House later said Trump was referring to the Ebola vaccine— not the coronavirus. —Breuninger

“We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare for the expectation that this could be bad,” a top CDC officials told reporters in a conference call outlining what schools and businesses will likely need to do if the COVID-19 virus starts to spread throughout the U.S.

Schools should consider dividing students into smaller groups or close and use “internet-based teleschooling,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call.

“For adults, businesses can replace in-person meetings with video or telephone conferences and increase teleworking options,” Messonnier said.

She said local communities and cities may need to “modify, postpone or cancel mass gatherings.” Hospitals may need to triage patients differently, add more telehealth services and delay elective surgery, she said.

“Now is the time for businesses, hospitals, communities, schools and everyday people to begin preparing,” she said.

Salutations guys. I just got back from Costco and you'll be happy to know I have bad news to report.

I donned my gloves and grabbed a cart after sanitizing it with Sani-Wipes I pilfered from the nursing home before I was fired from my CNA job for being smarter than my supervisors.

As I walked through the doors, I flashed my card to the demoralized credential verifier who shooed me past with a half-hearted flick of the wrist, avoiding eye contact through my Frozen 2 swim goggles, the last pair they had at Dollar Tree.

Upon passing through the large entry, I noticed that things were a little different. To my left were massive 4k television sets, all displaying bucolic scenes of lavender fields and sea turtles, which alarmed me as I immediately recognized it as Neurooptical Programming (aka "brainwashing" for the idiots who don't know), designed to keep the shoppers docile. I knew then that Costco had been visited upon by the CDC's PsyOps unit.

To avoid the propaganda, I averted my eyes to the right where there was pallet after pallet of merchandise that was supposedly "in the mailer" but the sizes and quantities of the merchandise were too excessive not to be intended for the coming plague. There were giant boxes of Clif Bars, huge tubs of extra virgin coconut oil (presumably to be used as heating fuel), an entire half-table of robes (for the dying). Perhaps most alarming was the vitamin and supplement section which was full of large bottles of vitamins and supplements.

by Anonymousreply 590February 25, 2020 8:56 PM

R580, I don’t think China themselves know what the real number is. Between cremations, doctors reporting Coronavirus deaths as pneumonia, and now I’ve read recently that some people are going straight from their home to be cremated, with no hospitalization in between, so presumably they can put anything they want as cause of death, probably pneumonia.

Then they keep changing how they decide to report it, from not reporting asymptomatic cases, to reporting them, then the toll skyrocketed in one day, then they got alarmed about that and went back to not reporting a bunch of people because it looked so bad.

Who knows how many died? “A bunch” is all we know.

CNN-There are no current medical product shortages due to coronavirus, FDA says

While the US Food and Drug is not aware of any shortages of medical products being reported in the United States, it is monitoring some that could be at risk, FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn told reporters Tuesday.

"FDA is keenly aware that the outbreak will likely affect the medical product supply chain, including potential disruptions to suppliers [and] shortages of critical medical products in the US," Hahn said.

In particular, the FDA is keeping its eye on personal protective equipment such as face masks and gowns used by health care workers. The agency is proactively reaching out to hundreds of manufacturers of medical products for information related to these concerns, Hahn said. '

More on this: US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said some of the $2.5 billion requested funds would be used to purchase personal protection equipment for the national stockpile. On Tuesday morning, Azar told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee there are 30 million N95 respirators in the Strategic National Stockpile, and the US would need about 10 times that for health care workers.

Hahn also said that the agency is postponing roughly 100 scheduled inspections in China over February and March — mostly routine surveillance inspections meant to ensure that medical products produced in China meet the standards for entering the US marketplace. But he said these can happen at any time during the year, and the agency is moving things around so they can stay on schedule when it comes to planned inspections for the year.
