R586 of the previous thread, if you get a Sams Club executive card, or whatever they call it, doors open at 7:00 am. Doors open for regular cardholders at 10:00 am.
I went over there this morning with my regular card at 9:30 am, planning to upgrade my card. There was an older man guarding the door and he let everybody in, saying don’t go to the cash register until 10:00 am and you’ll be good. Store was mostly empty, lots of stock. At 10:00 the herd came in. I’m going to upgrade my card.
At 9:30 the parking lot was already half full, but I didn’t have to walk a mile to get in, which was nice.
They also have 4 gallon bottles of water at Sams. They’re not always in the water aisle. I found them in office supplies. They only weigh 32 lbs, so it’s manageable if a five gallon bottle is too heavy for you.

So I have been having chest pains while breathing due to having an auto immune induced pleurisy episode. This happens a few times a year for me, so I know the signs. I called my doctor to get a round of prednisone. While I was talking to him, he proceeds to ask me if I had been to or have had contact with anyone who went over seas. He then tells me that if I should get a fever or have trouble breathing to not go to the ER, but call him and he will send someone over to test me. This is in Dallas BTW.

R16 Chloroquine Phosphate is an older class of anti-malarial meds that really isn't used much to treat malaria anymore due to overuse and development of resistance against it. However there's evidence from studies in China showing efficacy in treating patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. It's also contraindicated in patients with poor renal function or kidney disease due to the medication being excreted in the kidneys.

Part of the reason for people supposedly testing negative then positive may not have to do with incubation period at all. We have to consider the fact that the tests that most countries are using have a relatively low sensitivity rate comparable to the RIDTs (rapid flu test). So far as we know, the SARS-CoV-2 is estimated to have a sensitivity rate of 70-75%, meaning it can have an error rate (false positive or negative) of around 25%. Couple that with the fact that these rapid assay tests are highly dependent on samples being tested. It means that sometimes when we swab your nasal or oropharyngeal passages for cells, we sometimes either don't get enough cells or we get cells that don't contain pathogenic RNA fragments.
I'm more concerned about the situation in South Korea and how that plays out because it's an advance nation with good healthcare infrastructure and people are generally adherent to public health policies. What's going on there is an epidemic that's that started out as cluster cases, but then it spread out further into the community via what's known as super-spreaders. Anyways, something to keep closer eyes on in the upcoming days, same situation in Italy where there's less stringent border control than South Korea.

CNN-California is monitoring more than 8,400 people who traveled from places "of concern"
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said today that the state is taking necessary precautions with people who traveled recently due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“We have a number of other flights including the most recent at Travis AFB in Solano County. Over 800 people have come in on those flights, but that’s a small part of the overall picture. Thousands and thousands of other people have come in on more traditional flights through the state of CA. Some 8,400-plus are currently being monitored with 49 local jurisdictions doing those protocols and monitoring as it relates to more traditional commercial flights that came in from points of concern and potential points of contact particularly in Asia," Newsom said.
Dr. Sonia Angell, a California Department of Public Health Director and State Health officer, said of a Solano County resident who tested positive for novel coronavirus, “This case marks a turning point."
The patient, who officials referred to as a “she” or “her” in a press conference this morning, said she is now in care in Sacramento County and has no travel history and no known exposure to coronavirus.

Regarding the Californian patient with SARS-CoV-2( virus) who subsequently developed COVID-19 (illness) without having traced to travel or contact with infected individuals, he/ she is from Solano County which isn't very far from Travis Air Force Base. So that should be of interest too, it wouldn't surprise me to have more cases around that area. The patient was transferred to UC Davis from another nearby hospital, and the patient at time of transfer was already intubated and on droplet precautions since it was then still undetermined viral illness at that point. It took days for the staff to get CDC permission to test for the virus. During this time, the patient was only put on droplet, not airborne, precautions as we'd do for say, measles patient. Since the patient was intubated, the RNs in the ICU caring for him/ her were potentially exposed to aerosolized virus when they were doing endotracheal suctioning. Endotracheal suctioning can potentially aerosolize droplets, and this is why the RNs who directly provided care for the patient are now under quarantine at home. I hope UC is paying them for missed shifts and I don't mean they should use their sick time or vacation either. I think the hospital should have taken extra step of precautions and the CDC should have allowed testing earlier.

CNN-Can household cleaning products kill coronavirus?
Household disinfectants are thought to be effective against the novel coronavirus. Cleaning products like Lysol and Clorox list the human coronavirus as one of the 99.9% of bacteria it can kill.
However, it's important to note that human coronaviruses are different than the novel coronavirus we are seeing now. This is a new virus and there are no vaccines or antiviral treatments that specifically target it.
Lysol's products have been proven effective in protecting against the other human coronaviruses — so they're thought to be effective against the novel coronavirus, too, said Saskia Popescu, a senior infection prevention epidemiologist in Phoenix, Arizona.

Good news for people with COPD, allergies, asthma and those who otherwise smoke:
Clinical characteristics of 140 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan, China
(...)
Results : Asthma or other allergic diseases were not reported by any of the patients. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, 1.4%) patients and current smokers (1.4%) were rare.
(...)
Conclusion: Detailed clinical investigation of 140 hospitalized COVID-19 cases suggests eosinopenia together with lymphopenia may be a potential indicator for diagnosis. Allergic diseases, asthma, and COPD are not risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Older age, high number of comorbidities, and more prominent laboratory abnormalities were associated with severe patients.

"The WHO has said most deaths so far appear to be from multi-organ failure"
But Furuya says that this immune system response to this invader can also destroy lung tissue and cause inflammation. The end result can be pneumonia. That means the air sacs in the lungs become inflamed and filled with fluid, making it harder to breathe.
Del Rio says that these symptoms can also make it harder for the lungs to get oxygen to your blood, potentially triggering a cascade of problems. "The lack of oxygen leads to more inflammation, more problems in the body. Organs need oxygen to function, right? So when you don't have oxygen there, then your liver dies and your kidney dies," he says.
That's what seems to be happening in the most severe cases. About 3% to 5% of patients end up in intensive care, according to the WHO. And many hospitalized patients require supplemental oxygen. In extreme cases, they need mechanical ventilation — including the use of a sophisticated technology known as ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), which basically acts as the patient's lungs, adding oxygen to their blood and removing carbon dioxide. The technology "allows us to save more severe patients," Dr. Sylvie Briand, director of the WHO's pandemic and epidemic diseases department, said at a press conference Monday.

I live in Europe. Several of my 35 and younger co-workers have future ski trips or holidays planned for France, Northern Italy, etc., in the coming weeks. When discussing the crisis, most of them said that they have no plans to cancel their trips because most of the people who are dying from the virus are older people and that they will be probably be ok even if they get it. Several posters on this website have said the same. When I asked if any of them had parents, grandparents, aunt's or uncles over 70 most of them said yes. They were simply unable to understand that their ski trip might have consequences for their own families or for the families of their friends or neighbors This is the world we live in now. Self absorbed, narcissistic, with no true concern for those around them, even within their own families. This is why I have little hope that the crisis will be contained. Most people will not make sacrifices for the greater good. They will continue to do what they want to do when they want to do it regardless of the consequences.

R47 and R54 I think you need to take a deep breath and not feed into anxiety by reading too much on "facts" perpetuated here and on other websites. What is gained by knowing the gory sequelae of MODS (multiple organ dysfunction syndrome) or sepsis? As someone who has taken care of patients who subsequently died from sepsis and other severe complications of illnesses, you don't want to know the details of how they die. I'll tell you one case that I'll always remember. We once tried to do CPR on a patient with DIC from severe sepsis, a 19-year-old cancer patient. Let's just say that after it was finished, we had blood on the ceilings and walls and it looked like a scene out of a slasher movie. Not pretty. I wasn't queasy about such things and I'd seen worse. But that patient was someone that I'd bonded with and he shared many things about his life with me in the time that I'd known him. I couldn't regulate that part of being a bedside ICU nurse as well as others. So it wasn't the gory details that you'd like to know about, but the human side of things that really affect many of us. But I do understand the public fascination with what really happens in that scenario. From a psych perspective it's often the unknown that's worse than what we do know, so I get it. But still think it's good to step back and not get too engaged in thinking these kind of things. Anyways, much respect for RNs who could do that for entire career. I work in the clinics now in primary care and psych as DNP. As for anxiety about being in the front lines in times to come, IDK, we all work from an evidence-based perspective and we take proper precautions as we see fit. I'm not freaked out about it the same ways that I see some posters here are. Concerned but not freaking out.

R47 I think what kills them is ARDS - a complication of the illness.
My dad died of ARDS (that was his official reason of death) last year. Its a very rare and deadly complication. He had congestive heart failure, was doing well but then aspirated overnight at the hospital. Was then put on life support and deteriorated from there. Ended up with sepsis, ogilvie syndrome, then all his organs shut down - he then developed ARDS.

The general thinking can also be backwards. For example, every year every foreign teacher had to have an HIV test - even if we hadn't left the country. The reason? There is no 'AIDs' in Korea, therefore it is the foreigners bringing it in as if we automatically develop it through our foreign-ness.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, one of the country’s leading experts on viruses and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases, told associates that the White House had instructed him not to say anything else without clearance.

R78’s News is the most frightening thing about this.
1. Trump deliberately put Pence in charge of censoring all news. He wasn’t put there to help, but to shut everyone up. That’s why that official said yesterday he was “delighted” to have Pence’s attention, because it would help. He didn’t know Pence’s whole job was to shut him up, and nothing else.
2. Trump did it because HHS or CDC briefed him and told him something so bad, he thought the only thing to do was censor it. And it was so obviously bad, even dummy Trump could understand it, no matter how much he pretends all is well. And he knew it would kill the stock market, which is all he cares about.
3. He knew this two days ago.
4. Insiders trading know it too. It just got out. Someone leaked it. Probably somebody that’s pissed off at HHS. What is it?
And whose idea was it that censoring news in the U.S. would censor a global pandemic? Stephen Miller? Sounds like him.

Federal health employees interacted with Americans quarantined for possible exposure to the coronavirus without proper medical training or protective gear, then scattered into the general population, according to a government whistle-blower.
In a portion of a complaint filing obtained by The New York Times that has been submitted to the Office of the Special Counsel, the whistle-blower, described as a senior leader at the health agency, said the team was “improperly deployed” to two military bases in California to assist the processing of Americans who had been evacuated from coronavirus hot zones in China and elsewhere.

R64 your story reminds me of one my mom told. She was a nurse - visiting nurse. She had a client that was only 25. The client was dying. My mom worked night shift there watching over her for months and bonded with her and the family. She arrived one night and the patient had had a horrible day - death was imminent. The patients poor parents hadn't slept in weeks. Well overnight the patent did die - it was a very bad death... my mom cleaned her up before waking her parents - she told the parents that their daughter died peacefully that night. She didn't want to wake them while it was going on - it was that bad.

We have a pretty good public health infrastructure in this country, and while I think there should be a single source of official governmental information to discourage different ways of saying the same thing and possible misinformation, I don't have confidence in Trump-associates being the point person. It should be a top public health official such as Dr. Fauci. Such as person would be able to coordinate efforts between multiple agencies as well as adhere to public health protocols, scientific method, and evidence-based medicine, and most importantly do so without political interests. This person should not be from any political party, not Repugs or Dems alike, but someone from public health sector.
The problem I see now is with containment and slowing progression of spread in Italy and S. Korea. We do have a better public health infrastructure than those two nations, but then again S, Korea have had to deal with SARS and MERS, so they've learned some valuable lessons. Rapid spread with a high number of cases will overwhelm the capacity of healthcare system. This in turn promotes high mortality and morbidity. Conversely, slowing down the spread allows for needed time and resources to adequately prepare and manage the case load. Therefore, mitigating risks of transmission should be top priority even during the worst points of epidemics. Recent epidemics (SARS, Ebola, and MERS) have highlighted the fact that healthcare facilities are also particularly at risk during an epidemic.
Hospitals have initiated super-spreading events during both SARS and MERS outbreaks. We should learn from those events. Gatekeepers of hospitals such as outpatient and emergency departments are the most affected. Plans should be in place that include details for safe and effective screening, isolation, and testing of suspected persons. If this isn't fully addressed, then an increased number of patients and disarray on the front line may turn these places into epicenter of healthcare-associated outbreaks. At the very least, a dedicated triage area, even one that's makeshift, should serve as primary barrier for the healthcare facility.
Triage would utilize a decision tree or clinical pathway to manage patients presenting with symptoms of acute respiratory illness. For instance, we test and treat for influenza or other bacterial causes first while advising home isolation. If unresponsive to treatment then test for SARS-CoV-2 3-5 days. If patients start testing positive and chains of infection cannot be determined, then we should prepare enough test kits to test more people than current guidelines of travel or exposure to infected individuals.
We can also utilize telemedicine (which we already use in psych setting) to further reduce the need for outpatient visits. Hospitals need to have contingency plans for general purpose wards and intensive care units. Treating numerous patients with COVID-19 would require more airborne infections isolation rooms (AIIR) than are available. I think building temporary AIIRs with mobile negative-air machines or by manipulating ventilation systems may be workable alternatives. These temporary buildings can be housed on military bases. Manipulating ventilation systems was done in Korea during the MERS outbreak with good results. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), along with sewage and waste handling and management, should be reviewed beyond existing policy to prevent possible transmission. Private practices pharmacies face challenges in that they may lack capacity for isolation and testing. They also need to properly screen and refer patients for further surveillance and treatment, so public health authorities should not neglect providing adequate support to them.

R113 It's no one's fault that PCR tests have low sensitivity rates, that goes for this virus and the flu viruses. I know people are surprised at the low sensitivity rate but that's well known to providers, and even sometimes providers are surprised. Like I said, these tests are also influenced by samples being tested. It's the nature of the beast so to speak.
People with mild symptoms of acute respiratory illness are unlikely to benefit from medical care, regardless of etiologic pathogens. Stay at. home, keep hydrating yourselves, take antipyretics. Visiting healthcare facilities will risk others if you have mild symptoms of SARS-CoV-2, or risk yourself if you don't have it otherwise. The public should be advised to stay home if mildly ill, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist or intensify.

CNN-UC Davis student under investigation for coronavirus
A University of California Davis student is under investigation for coronavirus following potential exposure, Dr. Cindy Schorzman announced in a press call today.
That person is being isolated at home, and two other students are being isolated off campus as well, Schorzman said. All three are roommates at a UC Davis residence hall, according to Schorzman.
Test results for the student under investigation are not expected for a few days, as the nasal and oral swabs were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, which is processing hundreds of tests from around the country, Yolo County health officer Dr. Ron Chapman said. The two other students are asymptomatic.
Citing privacy laws, health officials would not say whether the student was potentially exposed to someone with the virus or if they had recently traveled to a suspect location.
A Solano County woman is being treated at UC Davis Medical Center for what might be the first community spread case of coronavirus. The UC Davis Medical Center is not on campus and is about 17-miles away in Sacramento.

CNN-CDC changes its criteria for patients to be tested for the novel coronavirus
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield said the agency has sent out new coronavirus testing guidance to health care workers on Thursday, after what might be the first US case of community spread of the virus. Earlier in the outbreak, CDC guidance to doctors in the US was that a patient had to have a travel history to China, among other criteria. But a patient at UC Davis Medical Center prompted the CDC to change its guidance.
The patient that prompted the guidance change was transferred from another Northern California hospital last week. According to a letter from UC Davis Health, the patient “did not fit the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19, a test was not immediately administered.” After doctors persisted in their request for the test, on Sunday, CDC went ahead with testing.
On Wednesday, the CDC confirmed the patient tested positive for the coronavirus.
That patient became the first US case of unknown origin, according to the CDC. The patient didn’t have any relevant travel history nor any exposure to another known patient. The patient may be the first US case of “community spread” of the virus, officials said.
“As soon as that case was recognized, we met and we revised our case definition for persons under investigation,” Redfield said. The guidance was updated on the CDC’s website Thursday. “Today that has been posted along with a new health advisory that the recommendation should be when a clinician or individual suspects coronavirus, then we should be able to get a test for coronavirus.”
Redfield added: “This is a fluid situation. There’s a lot we don’t know and we are learning more every day.”

CNN-Former top US health official urges preparation for coronavirus pandemic
Dr. Thomas Frieden, the former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer today that he couldn’t comment on a whistleblower in the Department of Health and Human Services who contends HHS workers handled coronavirus evacuees from Wuhan, China, without the proper protective gear until he reads the complaint.
Instead, Frieden stressed what other top health officials have been saying for the past week, that the virus is going to spread in the US.
“The bigger picture here is it has become clear over the past few days that a pandemic is inevitable. What’s not certain is how severe it will be. There are mild pandemics, moderate and severe,” Frieden said.
He said the Trump administration’s request for $2.5 billion to fight the outbreak is key.
“What we can do now is prepare in the society, generally, in our health care settings, in the government – and one of the key things to track in this next week is what happens with the supplemental funding for this, because that will determine how robust the US response can be.”

Here's a table breaking down the symptomatic / asymptomatic cases according to age group on the Diamond Princess. What is interesting is that it gives us pretty accurate data since almost all passengers and crew were tested.
So about half of the cases were symptomatic. But that changes depending on the age group.
- Under 19 most were asymptomatic
- Between 20 and 49 there were A LOT more symptomatic cases than asymptomatic. Only 3 persons in their twenties were asymptomatic versus 25 symptomatic!
- Over 50 there's less difference and the repartition is about 50/50.

NYC resident being tested for coronavirus after traveling to Italy
A New York City resident is now being tested for the coronavirus — after the person recently traveled to Italy, the city revealed Thursday.
The patient reported symptoms of the virus, but further details on their identity and timing of their travels and illness were unclear.
City Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot said the number of tests will likely rise after the federal government recently broadened testing criteria in response to a more rapid spread of the deadly virus outside of China — in countries including Italy, Iran and South Korea.
“Viruses don’t respect borders and this broader definition will help us cast a wider net to detect the virus,” Barbot tweeted. “We expect the number of cases under investigation to grow.”
There have been no confirmed cases of the virus in the Big Apple yet. Six others have been tested, all returning negative results.
“We ask New Yorkers to continue to wash their hands regularly and stay home if they feel sick and have recently traveled or been in close contact with someone who has traveled to these or any countries with ongoing person-to-person spread of COVID-19,” Barbot said, using the name of the specific strain of the virus.

Unpopular Opinion, but one thing I’ll say about Trump’s strategy (self-serving as it may be & definitely is) is that keeping the panic down is actually beneficial because the hospital overflow and run on supplies are the main issues. I’m seeing the Frau Deplorables on Facebook dismiss this a “liberal media fear tactic Bull honky!” Which is good imagine every Ashley running little McKuntlyn to the ER for every cough and 100f fever.

Today, I go in and there are signs asking if you've been out of the country recently or in contact with someone who has, to let them know. Also a big sign saying if you have a fever, cough, or shortness of breath to alert one of the health staff there immediately. The nurse then proceeded to ask me the same questions and take my temperature. Very different than last week.

Sams Club still has hand sanitizer. So did Costco a couple of days ago, I don’t know now.
If you don’t have a card for Sams or Costco, now is the time to get one. They still have stock in most areas. They don’t carry masks, but they have a lot of gloves at reasonable prices. If you don’t mind house brands, they’re a good place to stock up on large quantities of laundry soap and generic OTC drugs and vitamins. They also have three packs of Clorox bleach, large packs of Clorox wet wipes and other cleaning supplies.
Also consider a fire extinguisher, and check the batteries in your smoke alarms. And get A/C filters for the summer, they have pretty good prices at big box stores. The gas discount price alone is enough to pay for your card over the year.

The public will see just how inept the current administration is to handle public health crisis. That and the fact that the CDCs funds were cut for that damned wall. Once people start getting sick and are overwhelmed by debt his base will waver. Most if the petulant children who voted to 'drain the swamp' will turn when they cant afford vaccines, testing, etc.
Its about time for the economic turn caused by the administration before him is almost expired, so it's about time people see that the economy is NOT doing nearly as well as they thought/think. Its going to be a painful lesson for many.

I.e., Trump's Katrina.
W's second term never got off to a great start, with the rollout of the doomed SS reform (i.e. gutting of the social safety nets, which the Republicans are openly trying to do again now). He was already hobbled at the end of summer with the chaotic Supreme Court appointment that ended with Alito getting confirmed. Then Katrina came along, he screwed up the response, and it was all downhill from there. The economic collapse 2-3 later finished the Republicans off temporarily; should have been permanent.

At Sams Club website, they have Auguson Farms dehydrated or freeze dried foods. You can order and they will deliver. I understand they have had shortages on some items.
If you end up getting freeze dried products, another good brand is Mountain House (more expensive but good). Some stores and Big Lots have Bear Creek dehydrated soup mixes. It’s very high sodium but actually pretty good. The secret for freeze dried food is give it enough time to rehydrate. If you can add water and leave it overnight in the fridge, that’s the best.
For freeze dried meals, they have two categories, meal entrees, like chili, stew or soup, and single items, like fruit, vegetables, cheese powder, tomato powder, (makes tomato paste), powdered butter and similar items.
From what I’ve heard and what I’ve tried, all the meals in a can are high in salt and some are better than others. Look at the reviews before you buy. As far as the fruits and vegetables go, rehydrated freeze dried strawberries are exactly like regular strawberries. They also sell blueberries, peaches and some other fruits. They also sell dehydrated onion and other vegetables. Read the reviews. Some are better than others.
FYI, some Sams Clubs are now carrying a few meal packs which are supposed to have food for a period of time, like “30 days.” Read the labels carefully. “Thirty days” may not be accurate at all. Some of these pre-mixed packs are very low in calories and high in sodium for daily rations. One guy on a prepper website tried living off some company’s “survival packs” and found he had stomach issues, it was very high in sodium and the daily calories couldn’t keep at cat alive. Also, “good for twenty five years” is bullshit. This is assuming you keep the pack at a steady temperature of 55 degrees. Nobody does that. In reality, I had some that were kept in a closet at seventy nine degrees in the summer, and after about eight years some was stale.
Once opened, they’re good for one year. Items usually come in a #10 can unless otherwise specified. If you buy these, be prepared to use them, emergency or not.

And let’s not forget Diet Coke, R248.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | February 28, 2020 2:04 AM |
R241, what people are concerned about is power outages. If short staffing causes power outages, power is required to purify the water that comes through your faucet. Which means if there was a prolonged power failure, the water in your faucet could be undrinkable and dangerous.
If you do get a notice to boil water, considering the Coronavirus has traveled through the pipes and infected a guy living downstairs on the common pipeline, it would probably be best to shut off the water to your house if possible. You would not want your pipes contaminated with unrefined water. At least consider it might be an issue. Coronavirus is a new virus, and we don’t really know everything it does.
In any case, if there’s a boil water order, you can’t brush your teeth with it or get it in your eyes, let alone drink it. Just imagine it’s Tijuana water, that’s about it.
Another thing to consider is that home water filtering systems like Britta pitchers, don’t filter Coronavirus. Neither do Life Straws or similar camping gear. The virus is too small and can get right through that filter. It will filter pretty much anything else, but not that. I’d be interested to know if the city water system filters it. We normally don’t have to worry about it. Nothing’s ever that small.

by Anonymous | reply 247 | February 28, 2020 2:12 AM |
R241, if you did want to store water cheaply in large quantities, the easiest way might be to put tap water in a water bladder in the bathtub in your spare bathroom. That water is not sterile but suitable for flushing toilets.
Another way is to buy a 55 gallon plastic drum made for water storage. A lot of different companies sell these. Sometimes camping stores sell them in different sizes.
You prepare that water for long term storage by adding 8 drops of bleach per gallon to the container. Or buy plastic Jerry cans made for storing water, same thing. Eight drops of bleach per gallon. That’s good at least a year. That is extremely heavy and can’t be moved, so place it carefully.

Well, it's here in Ireland after some Typhoid Mary brought it in on the plane from Italy. Said biohazard passed through Dublin airport, no doubt coughing and sneezing, and ended up in Belfast. The authorities 'won't say' whether or not they took public transport to Belfast, which means they did. Thus, there is one plane load, one airport full, and one bus or train load of potentially infected persons spreading over Ireland tonight. Probably a coincidence I've heard two ambulances racing by my house in the past couple of hours?

I plan on cooking stuff and freezing it, and I also recommend getting some bags of frozen vegetables. Get peanut butter and canned tuna too. Bottled water and big jugs of water. BEcause if they shut stuff down you do not want to be relying on anything but yourself. Get batteries. My family mocks me for having a nice library of DVDs because "everyone is streaming" but if you can't stream DVDs are the best. And get yourself a batteries operated radio. Yes. A radio. FDA identified 20 drugs with shortage risks due to coronavirus outbreak
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has contacted producers of about 20 drugs that either source all of their main ingredients from or are finished in China to gauge if they will face shortages due to the coronavirus outbreak.
None of the companies reported that a shortage is expected for their drugs due to the outbreak, an FDA spokeswoman said.
“We have been in contact with those firms to understand if they face any drug shortage risks due to the outbreak,” FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Caccomo said in a statement late on Monday. “None of these firms has reported any shortage to date.”
Caccomo did not identify any of the drugs or the companies.
She said the FDA has also reached out to more than 180 manufacturers to remind them of their requirement to notify the regulator of any expected supply disruptions.
U.S. officials raised concerns this week about the security of the U.S. drug supply chain in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in China, where a significant portion of the ingredients used to make prescription drugs is manufactured.
Around 88 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients used in drugs for the U.S. market were manufactured overseas in 2018, according to the FDA. About 14 percent of the API for U.S. drugs in that year were produced in China, the FDA said.

SiriusXM quarantines top exec, staffers over coronavirus scare
In a memo to staff — seen by Page Six — the human resources department said SVP of channel management Sally McMahon had held a meeting Wednesday with her team — and it turned out that some of the attendees had recently traveled through Japan, which has been heavily struck by the virus.
“In an excess of caution,” read the memo, “because people were together for a significant part of the day, we have instructed the participants of that meeting to self-quarantine by working from home for the next 14 days.”
The network has also put in place a set of rules. It’s banned international business travel, telling staffers who have already booked trips to cancel them, and telling staff who have been in contact with anyone who’s been in China, Iran, Italy, Japan or South Korea to stay home for 14 days.
The rules also say, “Please confirm with any guests or visitors who may be coming into our offices that they have been in the U.S. for the past two weeks. If they have not, please do your meeting by phone or Zoom.”
After we published this story, Sirius sent out a second memo to staff clarifying the situation. It read, “You may have seen a published report in the New York Post about SiriusXM and the coronavirus. Here is simply what is going on: at a meeting yesterday, we realized a handful of team members had stopped over for a few hours in an airport in Japan. That is all. There is no evidence of the coronavirus among our employees.”
Meanwhile, celebs in the building Wednesday included chef Marcus Samuelsson, Susan Sarandon, John Turturro country star Jessi Alexander, and the cast of the “Jersey Shore” (although considering what their immune systems have had to fight off over the years, you’ve got to imagine the “Jersey Shore” folks have pure Clorox running through their veins by now anyway).

CNN-The US has its first novel coronavirus-related drug shortage
The United States has its first novel coronavirus-related drug shortage, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.
The maker of an unnamed drug that has recently been added to the FDA Drug Shortages list told the agency that the shortage is due to the coronavirus.
On Tuesday, the FDA warned that these types of shortages could happen, and said it was monitoring the situation closely. The agency identified 20 drugs that either solely sourced their active pharmaceutical ingredients, or produced finished drug products, from or in China.
The unnamed company that notified the FDA about a shortage said the problem is the result of an issue with the manufacturing of an active pharmaceutical ingredient used in the drug.
Made in China: The US relies heavily on Chinese-made drug ingredients, medical devices and drugs that are used in humans and animals. As of 2018, China ranked second among countries that exported drugs and biologics to the US, and ranked first for medical devices, according to the FDA.
Obligation to report shortages: The agency said Tuesday it has been in touch with 180 manufacturers to remind them that the companies have a regulatory obligation to notify the FDA if they anticipate any disruption to drug supplies. The agency asked companies to evaluate their supply chains in light of the coronavirus outbreak.
The FDA said it is working with the manufacturer that was recently added to the shortages list to try and mitigate the problem.
"“We will do everything possible to mitigate the shortage,” the agency said in a news release Thursday."

CNBC:
U.S. stock futures early Friday pointed to more losses after the major indexes suffered a tumble that sent them more than 10% below their record highs.
As of 1:37 a.m. ET Friday, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were 429 points lower, indicating an implied opening loss of 620.64 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures also pointed to a lower open on Friday.
Meanwhile, bond yields also continued to slip as the yield on the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury touched new record lows, according to Reuters. It was last at 1.2274%.
The Dow plummeted nearly 1,200 points on Thursday — its biggest one-day point drop ever — as worries over the coronavirus possibly spreading sent stocks spiraling lower. The 30-stock average closed in correction territory along with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite.

I work at a small college in the south and today we got a briefing on what plans are in place just in case things go.... South. We will be moving to online teaching, but we don't know yet if we will send students home, or quarantine them in their dorms. Much of that will depend on what direction comes from the CDC.
The only time I see Fox news is that the gym, and my eyes keep drifting towards it while I'm on the treadmill because it makes me so fucking angry. Laura "nazi" Ingraham opened her show with a segment called the left goes viral, talking about how our site is blaming Trump for the disease, and how he has not cut funding from the CDC, then followed that up with a segment look how to prepare for a pandemic. But that won't happen. The only thing that gives me real pleasure is that the hotel industry is going to get hit hard and should do a number on Drumpf's portfolio.

Chris Hayes:
So here's what appears to be chain of events:
The Trump administration repatriated infected Americans over the objections of the CDC.
HHS then sent federal workers to interact with the infected population without adequate training or protection.
Then those workers went out into the public with no monitoring or testing regime in place.
And now the first US-contracted case has appeared right near one of the airforce bases where this all happened.
When someone at HHS raised alarms about all this s/he was criticized for hurting morale and then ordered to another position or be fired.
This is real real real bad.

R257 I didn’t see the show, but I am guessing he was talking about the -itidine reflux medications. They are all manufactured in mainland China. Zantac was determined to cause cancer and taken off the market and there are manufacturing concerns with the others in addition to just pressure from former Zantac users going to other meds. The last time I was able to get my nizatidine prescription filled was early December and I’ve been reduced to taking over the counter Tagamet. (I think that was in thread one or two)
Also not coronavirus related but a China supply chain issue and posted a few threads ago there’s a major recall of surgical gowns that were manufactured in filthy conditions.
Medical supply chain is a national security issue.
(Anyone know where barbiturates are manufactured? IV Ativan made my septic shock bearable, (thank you anterograde amnesia) so I sure hope it is Ohio.)
I don’t have anything new, but I am gratified in a deeply sad way that the news about how CDC has been refusing to test people is finally getting out into the public. I felt a little like a crank posting about it, but now that it is public things should change. Also I don’t know if I’ll get an answer, but I have sent questions to my CDC lawyer contact deployed at a quarantine airbase.
Also, and I know masks are a controversial topic, but I wore cloth washable masks with the n95 inserts on both five-ish hour flights plus cloth moisturizing gloves and it was extremely uncomfortable. (I am on immunosuppressants for my pre-existing condition so avoiding all germs is more important for me than the general population.)

Trump, in his addled, insane state doesn't seem to realize that the stock market is not like his MAGAts. He can't just go on TV and say everything is fine, and we're covering this, it's all under control, when it isn't. The markets know better. They're going by a different set of metrics grounded in facts. He's also blaming the Fake News for distorting the spread of the disease and setting off a panic. Everything about Trump is fake and he believes he can bullshit his way out of everything. But not this. And since his advisers tell him that as long as the stock market is healthy and the economy is good he'll be re-elected, he is panicking right now. A fucking lunatic.

The markets are crashing because they don’t like uncertainty - and that’s what’s going on. Things in China are uncertain as to when normal production and shipping will resume.
The Coronavirus isn’t Trumps fault - as unpopular of an opinion that may be here - as much as you would like to blame him he can’t control what happened in China.
He also doesn’t want to cause even more panic by telling everyone “the sky is falling” (Even if it is) because more panic will cause more craziness.
I have a feeling they are going to pump a ton of money into the fed by Sunday night to stabilize the market and do another rate cut.
And for those jumping for joy that the markets are crashing - Just so it may benefit the election - shame on you. Many older retirees are losing money they have saved to live on. The markets are not just for the rich. A lot of people have lost money - and 10 percent (or whatever the figure is) is a lot for average people.

I'm guessing you mean the stock market and for most people this is false. Over the long haul stocks grow much faster than bonds. Most should plan on 30 years of retirement. So it's not hard to see why people might not believe him when he says "We've got this under control." And that's why you're seeing a growing panic in the markets and in the general populace. It seems to me that some people may be holding back from preparing because of their understandable dislike of associating such preparation with doomsday or “prepper” subcultures. Another possibility is that people may have learned that for many people the disease is mild, which is certainly true, so they don’t think it’s a big risk to them. Also, many doomsday scenarios advise extensive preparation for increasingly outlandish scenarios, and this may seem daunting and pointless (and it is). Others may not feel like contributing to a panic or appearing to be selfish. Forget all that. Preparing for the almost inevitable global spread of this virus, now dubbed COVID-19, is one of the most pro-social, altruistic things you can do in response to potential disruptions of this kind.

One thing that has to come out of this is a rethink on how the West relates to China. These barbaric, stupid fresh meat markets need to be stamped out (I know there'll be a black market but they cannot be allowed to be part of mainstream life.)
Maybe a lot of manufacturing DOES have to come back form cheap jurisdictions. Maybe this is the lesson. But consumers have to stop whining about higher prices. A shift like that has to have leadership and a voice. Democrats need to speak up.
I'm going off the top of my head here because I'm pissed off because between CNN, DL and NYSE, I'm uneasy today.
My main point is, new conversations aimed at new approaches based on new priorities (whatever they may be) need to be started, settled and acted upon.

CNN-First British coronavirus death is a man from the Diamond Princess cruise ship
A British man who was aboard the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship has died from the novel coronavirus, according to Japan’s Health Ministry on Friday.
He is the first British citizen to die since the virus outbreak.
The man remained in Japan receiving treatment, as dozens more British passengers who were found not to have the virus were evacuated back to the UK.
There are now 19 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

CNN-US health official: Lack of coronavirus testing kits a 'bottleneck'
A longtime adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and infectious disease expert said the lack of novel coronavirus test kits has been a “bottleneck.”
“We haven’t been able to test more broadly as many of my colleagues in infectious disease would like,” said Dr. William Schaffner, medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, said on CNN today.
A flaw in the CDC-issued test kits delayed testing abilities in nearly all state and local public health labs.
The CDC has issued new testing protocols that should allow as many as 40 labs to begin testing soon. And despite the newest US case — a California patient with an infection with an unknown origin — Schaffner was confident about the US response.
“We’re still in very good shape here in the United States. We’ve had very few cases. They’ve been well identified, well cared for, and public health is working hard, having identified all the contacts,” he said. “Now, this California case changes the equation, of course. Where did that person get their infection? That investigation is currently very much under way. And we’re all watching that very, very carefully. So far, so good, but we expect more introductions of the virus. That’s inevitable.”

Oddly, maybe a recession is somehow a good thing?
A) could clip Trump's wings and get him booted when it all collapses around him (which we always knew it would. Better perhaps now, on the verge of any election, than after it, when he's got four years and lame duck status to allow him indifference to his mess.)
B) better for a Democratic president. Terrible time to inherit but every day that passes is a day closer to recovery... which that President can claim credit for (I mean, it's largely rubbish, the economy largely transcends a President... the cycle does what it will, government just nicks around the edges.)
C) This was always out there, circling, but it never arrived. Maybe now is less awful than later. At least it's triggered.

GENEVA -- The Geneva auto show was canceled after the Swiss government put an immediate ban Friday on all public and private events involving more than 1,000 people in order to halt the spread of the new coronavirus.
The ban on big events will last until at least March 15, one of the latest major steps by governments to fight an outbreak that has infected more than 82,000 people and killed over 2,700 worldwide. The Swiss move highlights the growing impact of the virus on daily lives and livelihoods. Organizers of the annual Geneva International Motor Show, which was due to run March 5-15 and draws tens of thousands of visitors every year, confirmed the event would be nixed.

"“More than 20 vaccines are in development globally, and several therapeutics are in clinical trials. We expect the first results in a few weeks,” Tedros said."
In the meantime, Tedros added that to protect yourself from illness make sure to wash your hands and clean surfaces regularly with disinfectant, among other healthy habits.

Here's what's important. Trump and his administration, Pence, et al, Mulvaney, etc. are muzzling public health officials and experts that are part of the administration like at the CDC and the NIH. They're more concerned with the economics than the health issues and are too stupid to realize the health issues will impact the economic.
I get it. They want to make sure the message is unified, and people are speaking with one voice. But what's happening is muzzling. We have a major public health crisis and he is censoring accurate information if it disagrees with his reality. A whistleblower talking about gross incompetence at the HHS, and people not wearing proper hazmat while they're evacuating people or quarantining people is important. So they threatened the WHistleblower and reassign them with the threat of termination.
Trump is deliberately misleading the public telling people the virus is subsiding, infections slowing etc. Not true. It's spreading. That's wrong. What he needs to understand that the path to abating (not eliminating) the volatility of the stock market lies in projecting stability not telling lies and doing nothing. Putting Pence in charge says they're viewing this through a political damage control prism, and trying to do messaging control.

Coronavirus: New York doctors make diagnosis breakthrough
A team of researchers in Mount Sinai, New York - the first in the US to analyse CT scans of patients - have said they can identify specific patterns in the lungs as markers of the disease.
The study revealed scan analysis could be a viable option for suspected patients and help determine which patients with inconclusive results should be kept in isolation.
The doctors, who published their findings in Radiology, received the scans of 94 patients in China who had been admitted to four medical centers in four Chinese provinces between 18 January and 2 February.
Most of them had traveled to Wuhan or had close contact with an infected patient, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine said.
Of the 36 patients who received scans in zero to two days within reporting symptoms, more than half showed no evidence of lung disease.
In a group of 33 patients who received CT scans three to five days after reporting symptoms, the team observed patterns of “ground-glass opacities” - white patches showing up on the scan which became more round in shape and dense.
In the 25 patients scanned six to 12 days after symptoms, the scans analysis showed fully involved lung disease.
Patterns seen in these images are similar to patterns seen in related outbreaks such as Sars and Mers.
“Recognizing imaging patterns based on infection time course is paramount for not only understanding the disease process and natural history of COVID-19 but also for helping to predict patient progression and potential complication development, “ said lead author Adam Bernheim, assistant professor of diagnostic, molecular and interventional radiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Doctors said when patients first report symptoms of possible COVID-19, they are nonspecific, often resembling a common cold, so it can be difficult to diagnose and confirmatory tests by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can take several days.
It also cited that the study allows hospitals in the United States and worldwide to confirm or rule out coronavirus based on CT images.
If lung scans for patients with early symptoms are inconclusive, doctors can consider holding the patient in isolation for a few days until a decisive verdict can be made.
Prof Bernheim added: “This is necessary for prompt diagnosis for any individual patient (which will lead to more rapid and effective care), but also for patient isolation to prevent the spreading of the highly contagious disease.”

CNN-Both Illinois coronavirus patients have fully recovered, governor says
Both US novel coronavirus patients from Illinois have fully recovered and returned home, Gov. J. B. Pritzker said at a press conference Friday morning.
The state is taking several precautionary measures in the coming weeks, Pritzker says. Illinois is one of a few states able to test for coronavirus, next week it will be expanding to two additional testing labs outside of Cook County; one in central Illinois and one in southern Illinois, Pritzker said. This is a "cautionary measure" to respond to any potential cases, Pritzker said.
Voluntary testing will also be available in select hospitals in the state, according to Pritzker.
The best thing the general public can do is "continue with the same precautions that you take during flu season," Pritzker said.

cnn-World Health Organization says drug manufacturers affected by coronavirus are starting to come back online
The World Health Organization has been monitoring the impact of the novel coronavirus on the global supply of active pharmaceutical ingredients, Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Programme, said today during a press briefing, and it is concerned.
“We do believe, though, with the decreasing incidence in China, that many companies who do produce these APIs are beginning to come back online,” Ryan said.
"“So while there is a big slump in supply, we believe that’s being switched on again. We continue to monitor that.”"
The US Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday the country’s first novel coronavirus-related drug shortage. The maker of an unnamed drug that has recently been added to the FDA Drug Shortages list told the agency that the shortage is due to the novel coronavirus. Earlier in the week, the agency said it had identified 20 drugs that either solely sourced their active pharmaceutical ingredients, or produced finished drug products, from or in China.

CNN-3 Italian soccer players test positive for coronavirus
The US Pianese, a soccer club in the Italian region of Tuscany, has confirmed that three of its players plus one of its staff members have tested positive for coronavirus, according to a statement.
The club has not released the names for the four patients.
The first case, a football player, was assisted by the team’s doctor after showing symptoms such as fever and headache on Saturday, and was later transferred to Siena’s Hospital, the statement says.
After that, the team “followed the instructions of the Ministry of Health” and the staff was put on quarantine and underwent a swab test.
The results revealed that three more people tested positive: two football players who are asymptomatic and quarantined in their own homes, and a collaborator who was taken to Siena’s hospital by ambulance after spending Thursday night with a high fever.
“As of now, every player, technical staff and managers present at the events of last weekend are in a 15-day fiduciary quarantine, in their own homes, and no one is showing symptoms of the COVID-19”, the club stated on Facebook.

According to Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.), Fauci was scheduled to do all five major Sunday talk shows, but Fauci canceled the appearances after Vice President Pence took over the administration’s response to the disease.
“I can repeat what he said, he said, ‘I was not muzzled. However, I was to go on the Sunday talk shows, five of them. The vice president’s office then took over the control of this situation, and told me to stand down, not to do those shows,'” Garamendi said, quoting Fauci.

Going tomorrow for another stockpile. Agree with r452, I'm just doing this quietly. Chatting with the neighbour yesterday, and he and his wife (both retired) in late 60s, are "aware" of the virus and concerned. They've been discussing among themselves need to shop for extra items and are slowly starting to do this. But yeah, my gut says to do what you gotta do, do it quietly, calmly, which is what I've been doing. Not seeing any panic at all where I am but there are teachers on my street. Was reading teachers are looking to the government (Province of Nova Scotia) for direction and none is forthcoming as yet. Nothing substantive at national level either which is kind of errie. Trudeau's attention seems to be on First Nations blockade of railway stations. -- And musn't forget - Denying the Sussex's their Canadian-subsidized security protection past March.

Reporting from the ground in Manhattan. Very few face masks on UES and in flower district. Plenty of tourists. Drugstores in my neighborhood have plenty of OTC medicine, alcohol, gloves. Didn’t look for masks. My SIL said they’re rationing hand sanitizer at her local non-chain drugstore. Supermarkets seem to be stocked as usual. Husband is going to shop this weekend and stock up the weekend house.

I have seen people on other sites saying that they’re stocking up, and the grocery stores in my area are running low on cold meds...I bought the last thermometer at my store yesterday. I don’t have any friends or family members that are stocking up yet. I think that our subgroup spends more time online, and we are better educated on the subject (we also feed into each other’s anxiety). I hate to be an ass, but I don’t think I’ll be sharing outside of my immediate family (and even then it’s questionable).

R341 Did you really mean to say 50% of one's portfolio, or 50% of one's money? Totally different things really. Younger retirees/pensioners can be rather risky with a 50% asset allocation in equities/stocks, and preferably some mutual funds that invest in the stock markets. However 50% of all money (or net worth) should never be exposed for older retirees. Better to use real property and other vehicles for growth.
My mum was greedy like that. I urged her to change into bond funds, currencies, other ETFs, etc., but she followed your style of advice and seemed not averse to risk. She's now lost a bit over £135K which she will never see again at the age of seventy-six. She has health problems as well.
People ought to pay attention to age-specific pie charts for their asset allocation and continually (annually) reconsider their risk. Half in is madness after a certain age. Thankfully her children own the home she lives in, and that she has a gay childless son (me) to see her through.

Scary article.
Coronavirus Test Kits Sent to States Are Flawed, C.D.C. Says
Some tests distributed by the agency deliver “inconclusive” readings. The C.D.C. will need to ship new ingredients, further delaying results. Some of the coronavirus testing kits sent to state laboratories around the country have flaws and do not work properly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday.
The kits were meant to enable states to conduct their own testing and have results faster than they would by shipping samples to the C.D.C. in Atlanta. But the failure of the kits meant that states that encountered problems with the test should not use it, and would still have to depend on the C.D.C.’s central lab, which could cause several days’ delay in getting results.
“Obviously, a state wouldn’t want to be doing this test and using it to make clinical decisions if it isn’t working as well, as perfectly, at the state as it is at C.D.C.,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

R471 I do believe it's high time America ask for help from other nations for test kits. Even the province of Ontario has tested more patients than the entire US. Test kits from CDC are rubbish. Not testing is spreading virus. Everyone ought to assume suspected individuals are infected, rather than the opposite whe so many in question go untested.
One has to reasonably assume considering the for profit health system, that x-rays and CT scans are not gping to be used as diagnosis tools when so many Americans cannot afford them. Individuals who have demanded tests, and received them without insurance pre-authorisation have been billed $3200 and $3500 in two cases. Cost is said to be $1150. The rest is pure profit. Americans never do as many labs in treating patients, compared to countries with comprehensive state healthcare. Something to ponder really.

My feeling being out in public is people aren’t paying attention yet. I’m stocking up slowly and assuredly, but I’m not seeing any signs of stocking panic, at all. The Costco clerks I’ve spoken to said nothing is happening. Not to say it WON’T, because I think in two weeks it will be quite a different story, but for now, quietly stock and you should be fine.

This is the official US strategy. They want to sell the virus as a "normal" flu and hope for the best. Of course, they avoid any mention of the mortality rate relative to the normal flu. China has not shut down major cities because of a "normal" flu. They are not wearing protective gear because of a "normal" flu. They are not sealing people n their homes because of a "normal" flu. They ARE NOT jeopardising tjeir entire economy because of a fucking "normal " flu. Sadly, this strategy is working on some based on several ignorant comments that I've seen on this site and others regarding flu comparisons.
50m ago 18:09
The acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, has accused the media of stoking fear over the coronavirus as a plot to take down Donald Trump, Politico reports.
Speaking at a conservative activist conference in Maryland, Mulvaney suggested the coronavirus was not as serious as other viral outbreaks.
At any particular time, 20 million people in this country are going to have the flu. The flu kills people, it does. This is not Ebola, OK? And I’ll tell you what that means in a sense.
It’s not Sars. It’s not Mers. Why do we say that? When you look at the severity of diseases, one of the ways you can look at it is looking at the percentage of people who get it who die. I know that’s sort of hard-hearted, but that’s sort of how we look at it.
But Mulvaney added that the US would “probably” experience school closures as Covid-19 continued to spread around the world.
Are you going to see some schools shut down? Probably. May you see impacts on public transportation? Sure. But we do this. We know how to handle this.
So, that’s one of the things – that’s the kind of message you try to get out. There are professionals who know how to handle this.”

Thanks r474. Good post. It's funny, as a fellow Canadian, it's so easy to take for granted our health care system. But when a crisis happens, it's such a comfort to know we can get reasonably good health care in comparison to neighbour to the south. cnn-There are now 821 coronavirus cases in Italy
Angelo Borrelli, head of the Italian Civil Protection Agency, said there are 821 coronavirus cases in the country.
Borelli explained that 412 of the cases did not show symptoms and are currently in home isolation:
“It is important to refer that, from the 821 people affected, half of them – 412 – are people that are asymptomatic or have light symptoms and don’t need to be hospitalized, so they are in domiciliary isolation. 445 people are recovering at the hospital, with symptoms, and 64 are in intensive care”, he said.
The Italian official also announced that the death toll is currently 21.
“Regarding the people who died, these are people in their 80s and 70s and the coronavirus might just be an added complication. Now the National Health Institute will work to certify the cause of death," he said.
“[Those who died] were at an advanced age and they already have a lot of other symptoms and diseases before the coronavirus. So the virus entered an already-complicated clinical scenario.”
Regarding the overflow and lack of conditions in hospitals, the Italian official said: “I can confirm [this situation]. We have received the information that more than 200 people are waiting to be visited [by doctors]. But this morning we heard the situation has been normalized.”

Cheers R477. I currently live in the US, but I'm a Brit expat. It really is a different form of "doctoring" here... up until recently (10-15 yrs ago) they used to simply toss the script for antibiotics at you, and triage that way, rather than take specimen, and order labs. Now they simply assume everything is virus, and hold off on the antibiotics. Don't believe either is good really. NHS sucks if one has the Cancer, but all in all they do better for much all else.
Canadian healthcare can be said to be leagues better than the NHS. Both are better than the American system, as even the smallest things suffer if the patient is poor or working class. The small amount of care I've received here has been abysmal, and off the charts expensive. If I needed an organ transplant, or cancer however, I'm quite confident I would receive proper care, but honestly, only because I'm lucky enough to afford it. It's downright scandalous the situation of testing here presently. I've been complaining about it since the beginning It's either masterful propaganda, or utter failure, depending on one's POV.

R495, according to CNN. New cases in UK linked to Iran, infections reach 19.
Two people in England and one in Wales have tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total in the United Kingdom up to 19, according to the UK Department of Health and Social Care.
The two patients in England contracted the virus while in Iran and have been transferred to specialist NHS infection centers at the Royal Free Hospital in London, the department says.
European nations are trying to contain transmissions of the virus across the region, as Italy struggles with an outbreak in its north. Cases in the UK, France, Switzerland, Croatia, Austria and Spain have been linked to the Italian cluster.

R330, my guess is it can’t live long on surfaces in that heat, so outdoors at least it may die quickly. But I bet it may not make a lot of difference in air conditioned office buildings and hotels. 79 is 79 no matter what it is outside.
The other issue is that if somebody coughs right in your face, it doesn’t matter if it can’t live on surfaces. So if it gets in refugee camps or hospitals or hotels, or poor, cramped neighborhoods, it will probably go through like wildfire. Whether it burns out of people more quickly because of the heat will be interesting to see.

R496 Comprehensive care is included; if your clinician(s) deem a specialist is needed, you escalate. There can be long waits (cancer diagnosis not being one of the best or most timely for example). Some things can be denied however, if not deemed essential.
Most specialists are salaried positions in NHS, however many do work as private doctors. Very rich often use private specialists, yet use health service for general care, and minor complaints.
R502 No offense taken! I'm quite keen on Canadians. I hold a degree in public health, and must say I find Canada has a leading public health programme. If America were not so proud, I suspect Canada would help her if she were to ask.

The stock market is only giving up gains that it made in the last year. One year ago the DOW closed a 25,000. 3 years ago, it was 21,000. If your entire retirement is relying on gains made in just one or three years, that's akin to living off your lottery winnings. There has been an incredible run up since Trump was elected, so I don't think it's out of the ordinary that the market is giving that back. No contestants or anyone on the production team has contracted the virus or shown symptoms. CBS is not aware of anyone being exposed, the statement says.

Don Jr is worse than his father (from CNN)
Donald Trump Jr. is Donald Trump in extremis. If the President pushes boundaries, his oldest son crashes through them with glee.
Witness this interview that Don Jr. did with "Fox & Friends" on Friday morning: Brian Kilmeade: And so now we're getting to sprint towards November for -- to -- to see if your dad can get four more years. Are you surprised the way they've been handling the coronavirus situation, meaning Democrats? Don Jr.: Not at all. I mean, we've seen -- like you said, we've seen this play out for four years. Anything that they can use to try to hurt Trump, they will. Anything he does in a positive sense, like you heard from the reporter that was just suspended from ABC, they will not give him credit for. The playbook is old at this point. But for them to try to take a pandemic and seemingly hope that it comes here, and kills millions of people so that they could end Donald Trump's streak of winning, is a new level of sickness. You know, I don't know if this is coronavirus or Trump derangement syndrome, but these people are infected badly. OK, so. The President's eldest son, who has made no secret of his interest in running for office and maybe even president in the future, is suggesting that Democrats are rooting for coronavirus to come to the United States and kill "millions of people" solely so that they might have a better chance of winning in November. What can you say about that line of logic? At its most basic level, this sort of stuff from Don Jr. is deeply irresponsible. What he is conflating is the Democratic criticism of the Trump administration for both a lack of preparedness and a lack of seriousness in terms of public statements about the threat posed by coronavirus with, somehow, Democrats rooting for Americans to die en masse. Trump Jr. has to know that's not what is going on here. No matter what you think of Democrats or Republicans, the idea that a political party would be actively rooting for people to get sick and die is beyond ludicrous. No rational person -- even if you disagree with every single policy Democrats push -- can think that. What Trump Jr. is doing here then is using rhetorical hyperbole for the political benefit of his father. It's a tactic he got from his dad, after all. The President has repeatedly referred to Democrats as "really evil people" and "horrible." He has suggested that Speaker Nancy Pelosi uses religion as a crutch. He has insinuated that any number of Democrats -- Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, California Rep. Adam Schiff -- have major mental problems. What Don Jr. did on Friday morning is simply take this dehumanizing of political opponents to its logical conclusion: These people are evil, so they are doing what evil people do -- root for millions of deaths so they can win a political race Again, there is no way that Don Jr. actually believes this. He's just throwing red meat to a conservative base that has been primed -- by his father -- to believe the absolute worst about Democrats or, really, anyone who disagrees with the President on anything. That someone in such a prominent position would do so is shocking, although it probably shouldn't be, since the apple rarely falls that far from the tree.

CNN-Florida is currently monitoring 150 people for coronavirus
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that 700 people who have returned from China have been monitored for coronavirus in the state. Of those, 150 are still being monitored, 15 have tested negative and 4 are “under investigation.”
What this means: Being “monitored” means the person is self-isolated and with limited contact — keeping at least 6-feet distance — with others. The individual also checks his or her temperature twice a day. If the person develops symptoms, they are asked to contact the state.
The people who have been tested for Coronavirus have exhibited symptoms like coughing and fever. The four people who are “under investigation” exhibited respiratory symptoms.
DeSantis made this announcement after meeting with Vice President Mike Pence in West Palm Beach.
DeSantis said he expressed that one of the biggest issues the state is dealing with is not being able to test for coronavirus locally. The Florida governor said he would like to have testing done in Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami.

New York Is Making Its Own Coronavirus Test After The CDC’s Test Has Repeatedly Failed
Hong Kong is testing over a thousand people a day for coronavirus, while the US has only tested a total of 445 — partially because the CDC’s test didn’t work.
Federal health officials met with state and city public health labs on Wednesday to fix a crippling lack of options to diagnose the novel coronavirus, a shortfall driven by botched CDC testing kits. As a result, New York state and New York City are moving forward with developing their own test to detect the virus.
The lack of adequate testing capabilities was spotlighted on Wednesday evening, when the CDC announced delayed results of the first potential case of a person contracting COVID-19 from “community spread,” meaning they got sick without traveling to China or being exposed to anyone known to have the virus.

SF Bay Area Costco was a zoo - I did my shopping for the apocalypse a few days ago thanks to this thread, but stopped by Costco during lunch to pick up a few things. It was crammed with shoppers loading up on toilet paper, vinegar, rice, ramen, water, pasta, tuna. No more lysol wipes; they had to restock the toilet paper; just small bags of rice left - the big ones were gone; no more chick peas or lentils (what I came for).
Local target/walmart - no more sanitizer or the big refill bottles of antibacterial softsoap, lots of shelves with meds mostly empty.

Most of the shoppers were Chinese.
