If you're wearing a surgical mask and someone with the virus sneezes near you and some of the germs from the sneeze gets on the mask it will do nothing to keep you from getting the virus. You'll just breathe in all those germs through the mask thinking you're safe. The only mask that would help you would be a full respirator mask, and no one's going to walk around with one of those on.

Surgeons wear those masks to help keep germs from their mouths dropping into open surgical wounds during surgery.

The best protection is to wash your hands regularly, use hand sanitizer, stay away from people who look sick or are coughing/sneezing, and most of all wash your fresh produce well with a vinegar/water bath (or a commercial produce sanitizer) before you eat it.

And do your shopping in off hours when the stores are not packed with shoppers.
