People Freaking Out Over Corona Virus

Really need to calm the fuck down.

by Anonymousreply 604January 30, 2020 9:19 PM

But it’s fun to be a little scared. Plus I enjoy science fiction.

by Anonymousreply 1January 25, 2020 3:26 AM

Remember when SARS, H1N1 and Ebola killed all those millions of people worldwide?

Yeah, me neither. The media love to create pandemonium.

by Anonymousreply 2January 25, 2020 3:32 AM

It's malpractice by the media, but no one ever sues them over it.

by Anonymousreply 3January 25, 2020 3:38 AM

It’s almost funny reading the #coronavirus tweets. People are really acting like this Is going to kill off humanity.

Folks, more people die from the regular flu each year than will corona virus.

by Anonymousreply 4January 25, 2020 3:42 AM

Please, the odds of anyone on DL dropping dead of this thing is like twenty mi

by Anonymousreply 5January 25, 2020 3:46 AM

I had a virus on my corona once. Just a swab, some antibiotics and a lecture about safe sex and condom use and I was on my way.

by Anonymousreply 6January 25, 2020 3:47 AM

Viral warfare would obviously be self-destructive, unless you already can vaccinate your own population quickly.

I always wonder about the smallpox stored by the US and Russians. We’re not even vaccinating for it anymore.

by Anonymousreply 9January 25, 2020 4:12 AM

Some background. I’m a medical professional, had a lead position at my institution when I worked in infection prevention and was influential in our institution making flu shots mandatory for health care workers during the H1N1/swine flu outbreak in 2009( we were one of the first health care institutions in the US to make flu shots mandatory for health care workers). Been through the Ebola scare , SARS, MERS...and this one scares me. Wash your hands, don’t touch your eyes or mouth, cover your cough and sneeze in your elbow, stay home if you’re sick.

by Anonymousreply 10January 25, 2020 4:23 AM

I try to always wash my hands when I come home. Public transportation is gross, especially the escalator handrails, which are never cleaned.

by Anonymousreply 14January 25, 2020 4:57 AM

I'm sick currently. Second time since Xmas. Runny nose, scratchy throat, cough with very little mucus, body aches.

I'm a gonner, aren't I?

by Anonymousreply 15January 25, 2020 5:09 AM

Stay home R15, drink plenty of liquids.

Hope you get well soon.

by Anonymousreply 16January 25, 2020 5:14 AM

Thanks, r16!

by Anonymousreply 17January 25, 2020 5:17 AM

How will we spout off all the visceral hatred toward Chinese people we've apparently been harboring, OP? Too many of them, nature's cleaning house!

by Anonymousreply 18January 25, 2020 5:24 AM

Look, we are done with Sussexit and Impeachment is a bore. We need to move on to the next freak out

by Anonymousreply 19January 25, 2020 5:28 AM

One fun thing about the 1960-1970s, is this was when they were making a lot of fun si-fi movies, like Planet of the Apes; Soilent Green; the Andromeda Strain; Silent Running; and so forth. Most were about over-population or ecological disaster.

by Anonymousreply 20January 25, 2020 5:46 AM

This is the rhythm of my life, oh yeah.....

by Anonymousreply 21January 25, 2020 5:55 AM

Can I have your stuff, R15?

by Anonymousreply 22January 25, 2020 6:07 AM

R22, No you cannot, he's gonna give his stuff to me!

Let's put this in perspective: 80 people have died globally and several hundred are infected. Meanwhile, between October 1, 2019 and January 18, 2020 more than 8200 people have died from the flu while over 140K have been hospitalized just in the US alone.

by Anonymousreply 30January 27, 2020 5:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 31January 27, 2020 5:20 AM

R5 died mid-sentence.

by Anonymousreply 32January 27, 2020 5:47 AM

R30

You need to sue the overseas quack university that granted you a doctorate in epidemiology.

R0 is much higher than the flu, and the transmission window while apparently healthy is 4-10 days, something absent in SARS.

If someone can transmit the virus while being asymptomatic for 96-240 hrs...every health care worker is going to be sick eventually.

Ebola was scary until they guy died in Texas. He lived with his family for a week with full blown ebola and none of them got sick because it can only be transmitted by direct contact with fluids, mostly blood.

This can spread throughout the eyes, so masks AND eye protection are necessary. Both are in short supply in Wuhan.

On the plus side, most of the victims are 40 to 60 years old, so the vast majority of people on this website are too old to be the main victim demographic.

by Anonymousreply 33January 27, 2020 5:52 AM

R29, R30, For a relatively small number of deaths China has cut off the internet and all other communications, cut electricity and quarantined the majority of their country? Beijing is also soon to be under quarantine. Yes this means economic disaster. Did you know China makes 80% of the antibiotics used in the US?

For a relatively small number of deaths the US and Russia have sent private planes to pick up their citizens and diplomats from Wuhan? That's beyond travel warning and restrictions to China. Chinese tours have long been cancelled as well as all public gatherings, weddings, Chinese New Year celebrations.

McDonald's, Starbucks, and Disneyland have closed operations in China. All China's movie theaters are closed. More economic disaster for China which will have world-wide implications.

by Anonymousreply 34January 27, 2020 6:03 AM

R33, Are you aware that so far 75% of the victims have been male? Or that a young boy in Australia and one in the Philippines, both Asian, have confirmed cases of the "Wu flu?" I agree with most of the rest of your post.

by Anonymousreply 35January 27, 2020 6:20 AM

For those of you who are making light of Corona Virus, May I remind you that the 1st patient with a confirmed diagnosis in the US is being treated in a WA state hospital in an isolation ward attended to by a ROBOT only.

Furthermore are you aware of the number of infected Chinese that have left during Chinese New Year's and flown on airplanes to the US? Most colleges have Chinese students.

1st cases of "Wu Flu" were diagnosed back on 10/31, early Nov, early Dec, or late Dec depending on who you wish to believe. I don't trust the Chinese Communist government even after 6 of their party members have died from this horrific disease.

by Anonymousreply 36January 27, 2020 6:25 AM

The next two weeks should be very telling. We'll have more of an idea how easy it is to transmit (i.e. before and/or just when people actually get sick).

Stock up your supplies everyone.

by Anonymousreply 37January 27, 2020 6:29 AM

This one is more serious than SARS or H1N1. Mark my words. I don't know why only people coming from Wuhan is being examined. As if people don't fly between cities in China.

Natures revenge. Animals' revenge.

by Anonymousreply 38January 27, 2020 6:38 AM

OP: The virus is causing the stock markets worldwide to drop hundreds/thousands of points. Much of the commerce has stopped in China. Trains all over the county have stopped especially this week when its the Chinese New Year and millions of people were planning to travel.

So yes, this virus has terrible worldwide financial implications.

I love that this whole thread is to tell everyone to calm the fuck down, but as usual we get the "MARK. MY. WORDS." Marys we got in past years with SARS, MERS, H1N1.

Dataloungers LOVE being dramatic and ominous. Their dream roles are the various Shakespearean ghosts and soothsayers that prophesize doom and gloom.

by Anonymousreply 44January 27, 2020 6:52 AM

R43, Are you Chinese or Caucasian? Do you have other than Type B Blood? If you're White you may be OK. So far only Asians have gotten terribly sick and/or died.

Hong Kong doctors will go on strike by Feb 3 if the border with China is not closed. Too many cases of "Wu Flu" for them to handle and all must be put in isolation.

Note, hospital wards in the US have been quarantined because of "Wu Flu" patients. Pregnant nurses and staff not allowed to work in hospitals across the US and or advised to take extreme precautions. This is not a joke.

by Anonymousreply 45January 27, 2020 6:52 AM

R44, "Wu Flu" is far, far worse than the other pandemics you listed and much more serious than Ebola. Otherwise why would China essentially crash their economy and close a major port city?

Talk to the theater owners and film distributors re the implications of closing all public movie showings in China indefinitely as well as McDonald's, Starbucks, and Disneyland in Bejing and Hong Kong if you don't believe me.

by Anonymousreply 46January 27, 2020 6:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 47January 27, 2020 7:01 AM

This virus has foreskin-related written all over it.

by Anonymousreply 50January 27, 2020 7:38 AM

R49, Agreed. Chinese have complained on Twitter that the cause of death of their relatives, some previously in top physical condition, has been officially listed as complications from pneumonia.

All but the initial victims were quickly removed from their hospital beds and cremated. Testing kits for cause of death have long since run out.

Those who died at home were never officially counted either.

Then there are the many dead bodies lying all over the streets, and in the hospital wards , and in the 2-day lines to possibly get seen by a nurse. Most lie there for many hours as the ambulances are totally overwhelmed in Wuhan.

by Anonymousreply 51January 27, 2020 7:42 AM

Breaking news, direct flights from Weho to Wuhan cancelled!

by Anonymousreply 52January 27, 2020 7:45 AM

R51 If it is true that people at 'top physical condition' are dying than this is sounding very similar to the 1918 virus.

by Anonymousreply 53January 27, 2020 7:46 AM

Thanks for the past 200,000 years, it's been swell!

by Anonymousreply 54January 27, 2020 7:48 AM

Of course all of the democrat candidates are for open borders which if this story gets worse will give repubs more ammunition for the fall of 2020.

Having strangers just walk across your nation's borders with who knows what infections/diseases isn't going to be a winning issue as many dems would like it to be. Wake up democrats! Border control is disease control.

by Anonymousreply 55January 27, 2020 7:48 AM

R53, Elsewhere on the internet medical authorities have described the condition of both the 1918 flu and "Wu Flu" in which one's lungs overcompensates for the massive infection by essentially causing one to drown in fluid. I can copy the info if you so desire.

However not everyone experiences identical or even similar symptoms. Some seem to be OK and then suddenly drop dead on the street. That only happens when one is shot or has a massive brain aneurysm or attack. "Wu Flu" has a deadly neurological component.

by Anonymousreply 56January 27, 2020 7:53 AM

Not being racist whatsoever, but there is nothing that Asians won't eat or drink. This virus was most likely contracted because of their lack of self-control and hygiene.

R56 Are you trying to make "Wu Flu" happen?

by Anonymousreply 58January 27, 2020 8:02 AM

what is the significance of type B blood ?

by Anonymousreply 59January 27, 2020 8:06 AM

R56 This is R53. If I recall my knowledge of the 1918 virus people were in perfect health in the month and dead by night. The virus worked very quickly on some people. And that the body goes into overdrive to defend itself and in the process causes death sounds so similar.

The 1918 took about 6 months to make its way across the globe. Of course as we know already this has already landed in a host of other countries already. The next two weeks should tell us a lot of where this is heading.

by Anonymousreply 60January 27, 2020 8:07 AM

R57, Chinese have eaten live wild game and seafood since Day-1. The lack of basic hygiene in "wet markets" horrific. Plus soap is not a normal fixture of hospitals let alone any place else in China.

However I will agree with you that although appearing healthy I question the overall physical condition of all but the elite and very educated Chinese residents. Not only have almost all men smoked constantly since age 8 but their lack of sanitation from heavily polluted water has got to take a toll.

By comparative example North Korean escapees were all initially deemed to be very healthy by South Korean medical professionals. Upon further examination all had lifelong viral infections affecting their internal organs. The same is true of all lower class African immigrants with their multiple VD and years-old infections.

by Anonymousreply 61January 27, 2020 8:07 AM

I first came across the linked site below hours ago. The number of confirmed cases was 2118, 52 dead, 56 recovered. At that time I decided I would start "taking precautions" when the numbers showed more dead than recovered.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62January 27, 2020 8:09 AM

R9, Notice that no one who's not Chinese has yet to come down with "Wu Flu." Even the studly British world traveler who'd spent time in Wuhan and China, and was seriously ill in a Thai hospital was later was proven to be suffering from a different virus.

There's speculation from specialists in the medical field all over the internet that "Wu Flu" is a bio-weapon targeting Asians who also have Type B Blood. Was China trying to develop a way to kill a lot of Chinese Muslims? Scare dissident Honk Kong rioters into compliance?

by Anonymousreply 63January 27, 2020 8:13 AM

R62, I agree that the odds for full recovery are not good with "Wu Flu." Also as with Ebola survivors there are likely to be life long health issues.

However do you honestly believe that China's elite leaders would tank their economy if the death rate was anything less than beyond disastrous? There are cases of "Wu Flu" and likely death everywhere in China but high altitude Tibet.

by Anonymousreply 64January 27, 2020 8:18 AM

I just found out that my local Chinese community (my sister-in-law is Taiwanese), canceled its New Years' communal celebration on Saturday night, including notifiying the venue at the last possible moment, because a number of the local Chinese had traveled to China over the Christmas break, and people were scared to attend. Normally this event would attract 300-400. She also told me that someone she knows well is from Wuhan. He is freaking out. His parents are both ill at the moment, and he is skyping them every day, but they are at home, not at a hospital. Everyone is wondering how people in these quarantined cities will get food. The Chinese shop every day. They don't have large western style refrigerators and pantries. As others have said, I don't think we'll know how serious this situation is going to be on the world stage for another several weeks. If it's as contagious as some of the epidemiologists are saying, there could be hundreds of thousands of cases in the US by the end of March. It will be interesting to see if the virus causes the same physical reactions in people who eat a western-style diet and who have a certain hygiene regimen and whether or not the percentage of people who die from the virus remains the same. If it does, we are all in for a very interesting spring.........

by Anonymousreply 65January 27, 2020 8:31 AM

wow, there is such a virus? only attacks type b blood? oh thank fuck I'm not type b.

by Anonymousreply 66January 27, 2020 8:32 AM

R50, Bill Gates et al staged a simulation months ago of what would happen if something similar to "Wu Flu" spread across the globe. Note the movie "Contagion."

#1 issue is we don't know yet if non-Chinese are susceptible or if it's race or blood-type targeted.

It's generally proven to be a 2-stage disease. First an extremely severe illness with symptoms similar to the flu which. A portion recover while other get the second stage which attacks the brain. Some only get stage-2.

Also there are now at least 4 generations or waves of the virus.

Incubation period is 4 - 14-28 days depending on whom you consult. So consider how many Wuhan natives and visitors elsewhere in China have traveled elsewhere in the world.

Worst of all the virus remains on surfaces like on airplane bathrooms and seats. There are videos online of Wuhan streets being repeatedly sprayed with disinfectants.

by Anonymousreply 67January 27, 2020 8:33 AM

It would be the equivalent of a computer virus only attacking Linux systems (= a lot of effort for hardly any payoff) - type B is among the rarest blood types worldwide. Only AB negative is rarer.

by Anonymousreply 68January 27, 2020 8:34 AM

I read that the guy in Canada was in Wuhan but his symptoms were mild but checked himself in to the hospital anyways...he is recovering.

by Anonymousreply 69January 27, 2020 8:37 AM

R65, The State of WA and San Francisco also cancelled their Chinese New Year celebrations because Chinese performers refused to participate at the last minute and Chinese businessmen were not cooperative too.

Re your friend's family in Wuhan, I'd stay far, far away from a hospital as there's nothing they can do. Too many seriously ill to encounter in the 2-day long wait to see a nurse.

On another site they were discussing preventive cures that help for most flu sufferers. Yes I know this isn't a normal virus but massive amounts of Vitamin C, garlic, onions, etc has long helped. Interesting that no one who worked in a cinnamon factory during the massive Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 ever got sick. Cinnamon and ginger have curative properties.

Bubonic plague sufferers learned of "Thieves OIl" named for the grave robbers of victims who never got sick either. This concoction contains cinnamon and ginger as well as other herbs.

Then there's gin & tonic with lime and the famous additive developed to help those afflicted when working on the Panama Canal. It also contains ginger and other high potency herbs.

R65, At one point internet participants mapped out various escape routes for Wuhan residents. Yes if you're caught it's dire. Others have bribed vegetable sellers to hide them in the back of their trucks as they leave the city. FYI over 300,000 left Wuhan the day before lockdown. Then again it's claimed online that you can live on boiled water for 41 days.

MGM Grand Casino dealers, who are mostly Asian-Americans wanted to wear face masks this week. Their request was refused by management not wanting to frighten gamblers.

by Anonymousreply 70January 27, 2020 8:49 AM

R69, He is lucky to be on a respirator and to get top Western care. Would be interesting to know which meds work.

Rumors across the internet are that numerous US and foreign (San Diego, CA and Russian) labs are working 24/7 to develop a vaccine and cure. Personally believe countries other than the US will get the vaccine and cure-all out quicker as they have fewer restrictions. Will also be interesting to see if the standard AIDS-drugs work on "Wu Flu." Presumably China's doctors don't have a lot of good alternatives.

Wild rumors from Brazil say that a cure has already been developed. A Brazilian etymologist was one of the 1st in the world to come down with "Wu Flu" after visiting Wuhan in the very early stages of the outbreak. If you believe the posting on the Chans, "Mr. Top Secret" has been very accurate in detailing the disease well in advance of everyone else on the internet. He also says that there are a lot of politics and negotiations going on behind the scenes.

by Anonymousreply 71January 27, 2020 9:05 AM

R68, I haven't ever taken physical science courses so don't understand etymology. Medical professionals don't have access to direct data in China anyway. International volunteer health organizations have been recently kicked out of Bejing and Red Cross isn't even allowed entrance to Wuhan. There's a lock on relevant information.

Speculation is that European Caucasians have more of an immune system to "Wu Flu" because their ancestors had to survive massive plagues ever 100 years. Claims exist that all of the severe flu's have originated in China.

I'd suspect that anyone living in India, Pakistan, Viet Nam, Africa, etc who caught this virus is doomed as like China their hospitals and methods of sanitation are sub-par.

by Anonymousreply 72January 27, 2020 9:12 AM

R31 Dead!!!! Oh my sides

by Anonymousreply 73January 27, 2020 9:20 AM

R68, There's a lot of wild & bizarre theories online of why the virus was targeted to do the most harm on Chinese and if that's really, actually the case. Also why would it be released at the worst possible time for China's economy. Normally Chinese New Year is when most Chinese extensively travel, having saved up the entire year to celebrate with family, relatives, friends, neighbors.

One theory is that there are a lot of powerful Muslims, Christians, Falun Gong adherents, Tibetan rights groups, and animal rights activists who deplore the Chinese Communist leadership. An economically weakened China would be ripe for a takeover and a total reboot. Again this is just online speculation. Still making the rest of the world angry at China might further lead to regime change.

All I can say is that the Chinese I've known have long said anyone who can possibly afford it has always saved every penny they can to get a 2nd home established in the West. Those with advanced education and means have never trusted the Chinese economy nor the Communist leadership, although they'd probably never admit it to outsiders.

by Anonymousreply 74January 27, 2020 10:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 75January 27, 2020 11:23 AM

[quote]Incubation period is 4 - 14-28 days depending on whom you consult.

A new study released yesterday reports an average incubation rate of 4.8 days and RO of 2.9, which is consistent with the earlier estimates of 2.6.

Also: "2019-nCoV may have higher pandemic risk than SARS...implemented public-health efforts have significantly decreased pandemic risk....However, more rigorous control and prevention strategies and measures [needed] to contain further spread."

Just wanted dispel some of the fear mongering about this virus attacking type B blood people - as someone on this thread reported people with B blood are actually rare globally, even in China. If someone wanted to attack B blooded people they would attack India, which has the highest rates (somewhere from 30-45 percent of the population carries a B or AB there).

If this virus is as bad as it seems, it doesn’t matter what your blood type or race or nationality is. If you have a respiratory system you’re in trouble, end of story. That being said I don’t think there’s huge need to panic anyway.

by Anonymousreply 79January 27, 2020 12:28 PM

only infecting Asians? first time i heard of a disease that’s being racist.

by Anonymousreply 80January 27, 2020 12:41 PM

Dow futures down 400+ points on coronavirus fears.

by Anonymousreply 81January 27, 2020 1:09 PM

R77, my grandmother told my father a similar story. They lived in a small farm community. During the Spanish flu, people stayed home unless they absolutely had to go to town. She said some neighbors would check in with each other by going to the common boundary of their properties and saying hello from a distance. After a while, one neighbor didn’t show up.

The men went to the neighbor’s house. The entire family was at their breakfast table, dead. Fully dressed, with the food on their plates.

My grandmother wasn’t the type to gossip or make up stories. She was a stoic farmer’s wife til her dying day.

by Anonymousreply 82January 27, 2020 2:08 PM

Well, this could just be a minor inconvenience: according to this paper published yesterday, there are 2 major issues that make prognostication difficult: a variable but fairly long asymptomatic incubation period, suggesting that every infected person will likely infect 3.8 more people (airborne transmission). But 95% of infections result in just severe flu-like symptoms and will never be diagnosed. The thing to note then,, is that the number of infections is likely 20X the number reported, and that those unreported infections can indeed use fatal infections. Also, this virus doesn't require transfer of bodily fluids, or intermediate hosts. It is demonstrably humanized (i.e., humans can infect one another easily), and affects multiple organ systems, including gut, kidneys, lungs. On the plus side, these authors think that quarantining China ought to be enough to contain the infection.

My question is, will the Chinese government finally be held to accountability for these repeated plagues? When does the economic powerhouse finally clean up its water, and air and general filth?

R85, Reputable sources have provided varying information re this virus so it's almost impossible to pinpoint specifics. Note I've been giving ranges of days of infections and the showing of 1st symptoms. Will tell you that just taking the temperature of everyone departing the airplane from China or even from Wuhan isn't 100% effective in catching those infected.

by Anonymousreply 87January 27, 2020 3:31 PM

F85, Re my post at R87 stating that RO figures from reputable online sources keep varying,

"it's binary and two bugs in one.

They're averaging them. In the final phase R0 it is probably less than one. The true R0 is probably around 10. That's how they're coming up with the figure of 2.6."

Again China is not allowing any outside health organization of any type to enter the country. Most of the information that's available has been illegally leaked online through VPN's and satellite phones and posted on Twitter by others. Further proof of a massive cover-up by China. Compare it to Russia and Chernobyl.

Experts have confirmed that the deadly coronavirus outbreak began at a wholesale animal market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, a report said.

“Thirty-one of the 33 positive samples were collected from the western zone of the market, where booths of wildlife trading concentrated,” the CDC said, according to the news outlet. “The result suggests that the novel coronavirus outbreak is highly relevant to the trading of wild animals.”

R85, the R0 range in the paper I linked at R83, is 1.4 - 3.8. But subsequent papers seem to be using the 3.8 figure as the basis for their calculations, so that's why i posted it. And subsequent posters here have pointed out that the variability in the epidemiological reports makes discussion of R0 in the range we're talking about, a kind of trivial issue.

One thing that is more alarming than the ultrastructure and molecular biology of the virus, is the government's behavior. They claim to be forthcoming and completely transparent, but haven't quarantined a huge swath of the country, telling WHO, CDC, and UN officials that they will not allow inspectors into the country. Because, you know, quarantine. This suggests quarantine as a political move, rather than public health policy. I remain convinced that the Wuhan research facility that had been studying this virus fucked up, and are the true culprits who leaked the virus into the population, and they (the government and scientists) are working on cover-up before the monitors are allowed in and nail their asses to the wall.

China has made a big show of wanting to dominate the Biotech market, drug manufacture, etc., and this could really damage that plan by decades.

Top White House official in charge of pandemic response exits abruptly

“The top White House official responsible for leading the U.S. response in the event of a deadly pandemic has left the administration, and the global health security team he oversaw has been disbanded under a reorganization by National Security Adviser John Bolton. The abrupt departure of Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer from the National Security Council means no senior administration official is now focused solely on global health security. Ziemer’s departure, along with the breakup of his team, comes at a time when many experts say the country is already underprepared for the increasing risks of a pandemic or bioterrorism attack. Ziemer’s last day was Tuesday, the same day a new Ebola outbreak was declared in Congo. He is not being replaced.

Is it true that the United States now has no senior administration official focused solely on global health security because nobody replaced Ziemer?

R112, a few years ago I saw online, a number of tests done at home by a housewife that was a retired lab worker. She had a baby at home and she was bored, so she decided to entertain herself by checking to see what products killed virus samples. She did it with Petri dishes using lab standards, since that was her trade.

She tried alcohol, Lysol, bleach, a few commercial cleaning products. The Lysol basically didn’t do anything, which surprised me. The only one that really worked and killed it all was peroxide. She said after that, she started cleaning with peroxide.

by Anonymousreply 114January 27, 2020 5:25 PM

Uh oh. Two new developments. Apparently the high rate of infectiousness, together with the severity of disease resulting from infection is extremely rare and has never been seen before. AND apparently, that BSL-4 lab may have been working on biological weaponry. There are several papers now speculating (and it is speculation because the Chinese goverment is NOT being fully transparent. So scientists do not yet have the full genomic sequence of this virus from these patients, and are doing the diagnosis with only partial sequence) ---- so they are now speculating a weaponized virus got loose from the lab. A virus made more infectious, or more humanized, or more virulent, with CRISPR, the genome editing techniques now so often referred to.

So this would be awful on so many levels. Makes sense why the government is acting as they are. If this got out, China would be making plastic toys forever, and never be granted access to the sexier biotech and Big Pharma they have been setting their sights on.

by Anonymousreply 115January 27, 2020 5:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 118January 27, 2020 5:30 PM

That makes sense about why the government went to this extreme level of overkill right from the beginning. They knew how bad it was already.

What I want to know is, what about food? We’ve all seen pictures of barricaded roads and the airports are closed. Only foreign countries removing their own nationals are allowed to charter a flight out. The U.S. is only sending one flight out, even though hundreds will be left behind. I read one American woman said she wouldn’t get on that flight, thinking it was her duty to stay there and not contaminate Americans at home.

Are they just walling those people up to die, knowing the virus is extremely contagious? Maybe they think, if you can make it on your own, go ahead, but why risk more people.

HIV and Coronaviruses are retroviruses, i.e., they have RNA as their nucleic acid molecule, rather than DNA. The RNA has to be reverse-transcribed before it can make new virions via the infected cell's machinery. Hence the name.

The HIV drugs that affect these early steps would work in both. The problem is, by the time coronavirus infection is diagnosed, it might be too late to treat it merely by suppressing replication.

I am guessing there will be some new revelations in the next few days. There are as many as 20 possible patients in the US, all recent travelers to Wuhan. They isolate the virus from those patients, sequence it and they'll be able to tell where the mutations are. In other words, engineered for weaponry? If full genomic sequence is NOT made public, I suspect, China will capitulate to Trump in this latest trade war, in exchange for being allowed to stick with their, "It was the snakes!!!" Story. The US government will cover it up. China gets to keep their BSL-4 lab, their Biotech ambitions, and Trump'll use it in his campaign.

If it IS made public, China will have some splain' to do.

I wonder if the rest of the world will use it in deals with China? There are hardly any countries who don't have a coronavirus patient to sequence.... There are 57 BSL-4 labs in the world, maybe bunches with their own dirty laundry. ......

There's nothing about this paragraph that is alarming or even makes sense. Having a partical sequence isn't uncommon early on at all since it takes approximately 3 months to fully sequence a virus and viruses are known to mutate.

DL Scientists,

It is a SARS virus with some weird stuff in there. Maybe even Toxin_7 and toxin_25 DNA

toxin 7 (MT7) is one member of a family of small peptides of 65 amino acid residues derived from the venom of African mamba snakes (Dendroaspis angusticeps), which mainly target M1-subtype of muscarinic receptor. Muscarinic toxins like the nicotinic toxins have the three-finger fold structure, characteristic of the large superfamily of toxins that act at cholinergic synapses

Toxin_25 This family consists of the hefutoxins that are found in the venom of the scorpion Heterometrus fulvipes. These toxins, kappa-hefutoxin1 and kappa-hefutoxin2, exhibit no homology to any known toxins. The hefutoxins are potassium channel toxins [1].

R114, Online OCD preppers advocate buying food grade or industrial (?) hydrogen peroxide and diluting it with water for cleaning and disinfecting well water. They also claim it gets rid of colds and flu viruses. There's online info of the details and how much to safely consume.

This was all posted before the "Wu Flu" outbreak. There are still so many unknowns. Personally there are much fewer cases outside of China then one would expect if Patient Zero was back in late Oct/early Nov and Wuhan's and China's citizens have been travelling internationally ever since that time period. So have those who've interacted with them throughout China and much later became symptomatic.

Again there are cases reported in every city of China except for Tibet. Why would that be accurate? Do Tibetans have a different ethnic composition? Reports are that all Tibetans studying and working in China immediately returned home with news of the outbreak.

R187, It's getting way too time consuming for my to post anything on these threads especially since I don't appreciate getting repeatedly dissed by DL Trolls for my efforts. Also I don't know which sites DL approves.

For example the Chans and specifically "Mr Top Secret" have had excellent info before anyone else. I only read a re-post of it on another site. Don't know even if I had the links if DL could accept either one. Both have excellent sources linked but you have to wade through countless pages on multiple threads, ignore racist and sexist comments as well as drunken posts to get to the best updates. Kind of like reading DL

Initially I was posting summaries from extremely extensive reading on the internet. Most of the Twitter posts have been taken down by Chinese authorities as the site hosts have repeatedly stated. If you read the content and saw the videos you'd understand why the strong reaction. Those Chinese journalists who tried to share the truth in the very beginning were arrested or quickly left the country.

If you sent me a FB or an email maybe I could link individuals. However be forewarned re the above info.

by Anonymousreply 141January 27, 2020 7:01 PM

R140, Hope you're not being sarcastic in your post. There are posters on other sites that haven't slept for days linking info from all over the internet. Some of it is contradictory especially if it's a government or WHO source.

Other info overlaps and comes from an extremely wide variety of sources of individuals and hospital employees both within Wuhand and Bejing and elsewhere in China, those who work in US hospitals and see 1st hand reactions to possible "Wu Flu" patients, posters around the world who update stats in their country of reaction to sick "Wu Flu" patients and economic fears.

Top info of course comes from those with a strong scientific background to analyze the above. Also who have high level business dealings with China and can judge their suppliers responses.

DL Scientists, from same website as previously quoted,

This document provides testing guidelines for the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) associated with an outbreak of respiratory illness in Wuhan, China. This virus is considered a novel human coronavirus that is genetically distinct from the common human coronaviruses (229E, NL63, OC43, HKU1), which cause seasonal acute respiratory illness. It is also genetically distinct from the two newer human coronaviruses, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV.

Laboratory testing of persons under investigation (PUIs) for infection with 2019-nCoV may be considered for patients with:

Fever and acute respiratory illness, or with pneumonia; AND Presence in Wuhan within 14 days prior to symptom onset. Note that definitive testing for 2019-nCoV is not currently available. Testing protocols will be revised as more information becomes available.

So, anyone who was not in Wuhan will not be tested and there is no definitive testing for 2019-nCoV.

R149, "Mr Top Secret" at 4-Chan was the best source summary with by far the most advanced info. Again he's an in the know at the Brazillian government (4-Chan does extensive searching on their posters with foresight))

Mr. Top Secret got his info from a Brazilian etymologist who spent time at Wuhan's top bio-research lab before the outbreak.

I can't deal with 4-Chan as my computer skills aren't top notch and I think the site is a total nightmare to navigate. I've been doing extremely extensive skimming of 100's of pages on a totally different website where a poster did a copy and paste of the info from "Mr. Top Secret."

You'd have to pay me $$$$ to go back and find his original post among thousands of other links to videos from fearful Wuhan nurses, now mostly deleted, of the inside of hospitals with dying patients waiting for 2 days in huge lines just to be seen. Last part:

"If it IS made public, China will have some splainin' to do." Now, I didn't see this when I posted this, but just now, in looking up citations for this, ran across this article. Could be conspiracy theory, but it is an extremely well-sourced article if it is.

I wonder if the rest of the world will use it in deals with China? There are hardly any countries who don't have a coronavirus patient to sequence.... There are 57 BSL-4 labs in the world, maybe bunches with their own dirty laundry.

Practical question here. I live in the suburbs of NYC. There aren't many Chinese in my town at all, but a few Chinese restaurants. Should I be concerned about eating food/getting takeout from there? I usually have dumplings, etc about twice a week, not sure if avoiding is an overreaction?

Two more New Yorkers have been tested as possible coronavirus patients, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday.

Samples for nine people from the Empire State have been sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since the outbreak began — with four coming back negative and five still pending.

On Sunday, Cuomo had said seven cases had been sent, with three proving negative and four still up in the air.

“These five individuals remain in isolation as their samples are tested at CDC,” Cuomo said. “While the risk for New Yorkers is currently low, we are still working to keep everyone informed, prepared and safe.”

This B-Blood Type thing has me interested. I have the second-rarest blood type, B Negative. I am as white as snow. Scandinavian. White hair. Apparently it's very odd that I have this blood type. I never really knew there was anything to it until a doctor made a big thing of it once. Anyway, hopefully I don't need to worry about B-targeted coronavirus.

Then again, I guess we won't know who has it until another 2 weeks or so given the incubation period.

This is kind of interesting. The CDC gave out a list of symptoms, one is a high fever. This person mentions people collapsing in the streets, says it could be encephalitis.

That makes perfect sense. Here’s some info about encephalitis:

What is the main cause of encephalitis?

Encephalitis only occurs in rare cases. The condition is most often due to a virus, such as: herpes simplex viruses, which cause cold sores and genital herpes (this is the most common cause of encephalitis) the varicella zoster virus, which causes chickenpox and shingles.

www.nhs.uk

Encephalitis - Causes - NHS

Can you die from encephalitis?

Conditions most likely to kill encephalitis patients identified. ... People with severe encephalitis — inflammation of the brain — are much more likely to die if they develop severe swelling in the brain, intractable seizures or low blood platelet counts, regardless of the cause of their illness, according to new research.

by Anonymousreply 217January 28, 2020 7:54 AM

Complications of severe illness

Inflammation can injure the brain, possibly resulting in coma or death.

Other complications — varying greatly in severity — may persist for months or be permanent. These complications can include:

Persistent fatigue

Weakness or lack of muscle coordination

Personality changes

Memory problems

Paralysis

Hearing or vision defects

Speech impairments

I know someone who actually had an undiagnosed case of encephalitis. One of the unusual features was falling frequently, but when she fell, she would not try to catch herself by reaching out or trying to land on her hands and knees. It was like watching a tree fall over. Her reflexes to catch herself were gone. She also had a very high fever. It affected her permanently.

A disease with a relatively short incubation period that invariably kills the host is unlikely to become a 'Global Pandemic' with proper quarantine procedures.

You also won't find a cure or vaccine for the same reasons,.

This isn't a HIV, TB, Polio (pre-treatment) situation, it's more like Ebola which kills it's victims too quickly to become a huge problem.

by Anonymousreply 233January 28, 2020 3:03 PM

R227: "A disease with a relatively short incubation period that invariably kills the host is unlikely to become a 'Global Pandemic' with proper quarantine procedures."

That is not what this is. Coronavirus has simple cold symptoms. Cough, fever. In only 5% of cases does it appear to become so severe that medical treatment is sought. The vast majority of people survive the infection, (and pass it along to others). It has a long incubation time (anywhere from 5-18 days to become symptomatic, and contagious throughout all of that time.

"You also won't find a cure or vaccine for the same reasons,."

Even if this were true ---- even if it had a short incubation and was hugely lethal ----- why do you believe this would prevent the development of a vaccine? I have never heard this argument before and am curious as to your reasoning. One can assume that infected people might die and maybe even die with high penetrance. But the point of a vaccine is to protect healthy people from infection. What does one have to do with the other?

"This isn't a HIV, TB, Polio (pre-treatment) situation, it's more like Ebola which kills it's victims too quickly to become a huge problem. "

How is it you think this virus is in any way similar to Ebola? Your argument that it kills its victims quickly is untrue. It's symptoms are dramatically different, it's method of killing is different, it's incubation period and percentage lethality is different So where is the similarity and even if it WERE similar (which it is not) how does that affect the development of a vaccine?

Vaccine development depends on the ability to identify unique coat protein sequences that can be used (after vaccination) to mobilize the acquired immunity against it. How mutable is it, how antigenic is it, etc.

So are you just an alarmist troll? I mean this situation is bad as it is, but likely because we have not been told the entire truth about this VERSION Of the coronavirus, which may have mutations that make it a very different coronavirus from the ones we have characterized until now.

by Anonymousreply 234January 28, 2020 3:59 PM

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that the country is in a struggle against the “demon” coronavirus, the death toll from which has climbed to 106 as about 1,000 Americans remain stuck in the epicenter city of Wuhan.

“The epidemic is a demon, and we cannot let this demon hide,” Xi said during a meeting with the head of the World Health Organization as he pledged transparency in the government’s effort to contain the outbreak.

“The Chinese government has always adopted an open, transparent and responsible attitude to the timely release of information on the epidemic to domestic and foreign countries,” he told WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Beijing.

His comments came as Japan and Germany reported the first human-to-human infections outside China.

In the past 24 hours, the number of cases has soared — doubling to more than 4,500, including five in the US. More than 100 people in the US also were being tested across 26 states.

R228, because if the stores are rationing, paying cash does not leave a record and you can go to a different store with no trace.

Home Depot tracks every individual item you buy at the store on your credit or debit card. It’s on the computer system in the store, and the clerks can easily access it. I know this because I did a home remodel and found out that if I lost my receipt, I could give them my debit card and they could look up every recent transaction, itemized by product name. Same with Lowe’s. So if there’s an item limit, and they want to flag your purchases, there’s a means to do it. It depends on how far they want to go. Some stores have a “only so many items per day” policy on sale items, so it’s possible they already have a procedure in place to stop it. They just don’t normally use it.

In case people don’t know, the corona virus is traveling exactly the way the Spanish flu did in 1918.

It was thought then that the actual epidemic started in Army barracks. At that time, American soldiers were living at Army bases around the country. The holidays were coming up (I think it was Christmas), and the soldiers went on leave to go visit their families. A lot of families then lived in small farm communities across the country, so the soldiers traveled on trains to visit their families. Then either they were met at the train station, or took a cab or a bus home. People used public transportation a lot more then, because a lot of people didn’t have cars.

The soldiers had their holiday, then took the train back. By then some were showing symptoms, but not all. People thought it was a simple cold or flu and no big deal at first. Then they went back to their barracks and slept in large rooms with no partitions. A perfect storm to spread the virus.

Even so, the soldiers were young and strong, so no one thought too much. Just another bout of the flu, they’d get over it. Until they started dying, from the same cytokine storm that’s killing corona virus patients today. The younger and stronger you are, the more likely your immune system will go into overtime, which is one of the things what kills people. The other is pneumonia.

Today, people are locked in airplanes with contagious people, instead of being locked in trains, and they’re traveling for the holidays again. Then they go home after the holidays and infect everyone on their way home, just like in 1918.

Scientists have dreaded this scenario for decades. Everyone knew plane travel would make any epidemic spread much quicker than 1918.

by Anonymousreply 239January 28, 2020 4:47 PM

you can take advil or Ibuprofen to reduce your fever (if you have it).

by Anonymousreply 240January 28, 2020 4:54 PM

They probably mean OTC flu medicine or Tylenol. In other words, somebody already had flu symptoms and was taking aspirin or something to lower their temperature so they could get on the plane to go home. Fuck all the people they could infect in the process. It’s likely that’s a contagious, virus shedding passenger and the airline just didn’t want to have a showdown for political reasons. The passengers can’t get home any other way. So the virus spreads farther.

I heard that some places were taking passengers’ temperatures before they boarded, so that’s why they were taking medicine to lower their temperature. They thought they wouldn’t pass, or they thought their temperature would be taken, and maybe it wasn’t.

Those people were probably in the early stages of symptoms and wanted to go home and thought they could make it before they got really sick.

If you know anything about Chinese, that’s exactly how they are. No consideration about how their actions may harm others. It’s me, myself and I first, last and always for a lot of people, especially older people, who are so entitled it’s ridiculous. That’s why they have a bad reputation as tourists.

by Anonymousreply 255January 28, 2020 7:29 PM

I think it's nearly inevitable that most of us will will be exposed. The question is, what can we do? Obviously, if the virus is killing older people more than younger, older people should consider isolating themselves until the worst has passed once it arrives in earnest in large numbers in the US, which I suspect will be late March. Everyone should be trying to get themselves into their healthiest state, so that they have the best chance to fend off the worst of infection. That means, eating well including all those fruits and vegetables, getting lots of rest, moderate exercise, avoiding heavy drinking and drug use. We can all cope with a cold if we are in good shape otherwise, and that sounds like what the infection is for the majority of people.

Measles has been around forever. Coronavirus is a new and mysterious virus -- is it really baffling to you that it would capture attention?

Personally, r256, I'm getting down on my knees with Rosary Beads in hand, and fervently praying to God, His Holy Angels, and the Heavenly Saints, to spare me from the Plague of 2020. I'm hoping that since I'm not the first born male, nor the first born child in my family, that will grant me extra redemption points.

Chinese media started reporting the new hospital at R244 was new construction. I read it’s a converted apartment building. Now that cat is out of the bag, so they’re going with “second hospital under construction.” I read that one will be pre-fab, so it’s more like clearing the ground, laying utilities, and bringing in trailers or whatever.

They really did build a hospital in a week for SARS, so I wonder what the real story is. Too hard to bring in construction materials in abundance, past the blockade?

by Anonymousreply 261January 28, 2020 8:39 PM

R249, the death rate for the flu is 0.1%, not 10%. If it was 10%, we’d all be dead right now.

Sally Field will star in the move, “Not Without my Facemask”. It’s about an American nun trapped in Wuhan who tends to the sick. She winds getting her leg amputated when a poorly constructed hospital building falls on her. It might be staring Totie Fields, I wasn’t listening closely.

[quote] R217: Can you die from encephalitis?

My Grandpa caught encephalitis lethargica back in the 1920s when there was a pandemic of it. It is a mystery as to why it arrived and why is went away. It’s also know as “Sleeping Sickness”, so those guys on the insomnia thread might consider getting it. Some think it was a secondary infection due to the influenza pandemic just a few years earlier, but they don’t really know.

My Grandpa had textbook symptoms. It is said he would just sit and stare at the radio, like we do today with TV. He couldn’t work, so he lost his bus company and his apartment where his tenant was a drinker and stopped paying rent. he died at age 56. Possibly related.

The “encephalitis lethargica” Pandemic is something I learned from another DataLounger. I never knew there was a pandemic.

DL Scientists, Your opinions please.

know things... this is not Uncle intel,... I work in Biohazard remediation and mitigation for a living. I specialize in disaster sites where a large number of people have passed and ensuring the site is safe for people to enter. (Think Hurricane Katrina) Places where there are cadavers, many; rotten, festering, wanting to harm others. Places that have been underwater for so long that the very walls are lined from end to end with toxic mold. So I have a inside line to people and things I cannot elaborate on

The Corona-virus is tearing it's way across the world, and it is truly much worse than "they" are letting on. Is a big deal and I am afraid it may become a MUCH bigger deal.

You need to go to the store and buy one of these: Pepcid, Tagamet, Adix, or Zantac. Buy enough for you, xxxxx, xxx, and whoever you want to save, enough last 2 weeks. This covers your H2 antagonist drug.

Buy enough Prilosec, Prevacid. or Nexium to do the same as above.

This covers the PPI Drugs. (Proton Pump Inhibitors)

Lastly, I'd buy a big ass bottle of benadryl or generic benadry. aka... diphenhydramine. This covers your need for a H1 antagonist.

You know what benadryl does. But the H2 drugs work in the same way except on different histamines. The PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) stops monocytes from going into overdrive. (Monocytes = White Blood Cells) The Coronavirus hits in a similar way to the flu. As it is a "Novel Virus" meaning the body has never seen anything like this... the body goes nuts, to the point that your own immune system kills you in something called a Cytokine Storm.

This is very similar to a "Peanut Allergy", in that it's the bodies response that damages the person not the peanuts.

When to start this "therapy"? No need to take anything in advance. But at the first sign of "flu like symptoms" I'd start therapy. Take it as directed on the box.

You'll read and hear about it on the news. Obviously! What makes this virus "The Perfect Storm" is that it: 1. Has up to a 14 day incubation period. 2. The infected start shedding the virus in as little as 5 days after exposure. 3. Is as adaptable as the common cold. Meaning that about after each 3rd generation, the virus mutates into something that would require a completely different vaccination.

We could literally ALL have this virus and not know it.

I'm not freaking out, I'm not making a big deal out of nothing. You can google everything I've brought up.

Now for the conspiracy theory portion of my presentation. Whether you know it or not. There have been SEVERAL recalls of various anti-acid drugs in the past few months. (Once again, you can research this) Maybe we knew this was coming and we have been stockpiling. Yes, hospitals will give you prevacid and pepcid if you have the Corona-virus. Just sayin'.

by Anonymousreply 271January 28, 2020 10:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 274January 28, 2020 10:19 PM

R271 thanks. And if I get the Bu Flu and survive by taking all those drugs, will I have immunity for a few months while it slowly knocks out hundreds of millions around the world?

Also I have Nitazoxanide. I ordered a big box from India in the middle of the night last summer when I woke up from a bad dream about flu epidemic. Bizarre. I know it only works for A & B but would it still be helpful?

by Anonymousreply 275January 28, 2020 10:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 277January 28, 2020 10:37 PM

R276, you just take 1 pill a day (for prilosec)

by Anonymousreply 278January 28, 2020 10:37 PM

So 1 Prilosec, 1 Pepcid, and 1 Benadryl. How may days? Before or after you get symptoms? Also, will Tamiflu help?

by Anonymousreply 279January 28, 2020 10:40 PM

R262, you are absolutely correct. The numbers I was looking at was death rates for influenza and pneumonia, which was the easiest stat for me to find but not the most relevant in this situation.

R259, kind of. Coronavirides have been around for some time. They do have a high reported mortality rate (mers was 10%) but that’s just for people who seek medical attention; often upper respiratory tract viral infections have mild nonspecific symptoms and people don’t see a doctor. The only reason we have better statistics for influenza is because we have a widely available test that can confirm the diagnosis and improve epidemiological numbers.

R255, measles vaccination have declined and infection rates have increased in the last decade. People who were vaccinated as children are susceptible to lose immunity. The mortality rate is 15% (Higher than MERS) and it is extremely contagious. But we are not freaking out to the same degree.

MARY! up above is afraid to post a link because searching “I work in Biohazard remediation and mitigation for a living” reveals her copy-and-paste to be from godlikeproductions.

If you believe that down-regulating H1R and H2R expression with a few OTC drugs is going to stop cytokine release syndrome then good luck to you, but what are you planning to do about the whole host of interferons, interleukins, chemokines, and other substances flooding your body?

by Anonymousreply 284January 28, 2020 11:44 PM

Yes, godlikeproductions.com -- which, according to its Facebook page, is about "UFOs, Conspiracy Theorists, Lunatic Fringe."

I would definitely take medical advice from them.

by Anonymousreply 285January 28, 2020 11:49 PM

R284, R28t, Why don't you Google, "How to block a cytokine storm" and read an entire page of the same info? For those of us who aren't pharmacists it's difficult to interpret re which drugs would help. R271 simplifies it.

DL has bizarre posts from drunken idiots. Does that mean that everyone posting is suicidal? Should visitors therefore ignore everything written on this site?

I thought Caucasians were less likely to get sick. Not true. So I'm correcting earlier posts with how to combat this horrific disease. If you or anyone else has anything to add. . .

I saw the videos posted early last week from now dead hospital employees in Wuhan with 2-day lines of desperate, sick people. China's lying about the severity of this illness and the death rates. Now go ahead and believe those that have been dissing my efforts to help readers on DL.

by Anonymousreply 286January 29, 2020 12:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 291January 29, 2020 12:32 AM

R288, Estimates of 5,000,000 left Wuhan before it was quarantined, and 300,000 the last 24-hours of open border. Not all of them went to other parts of China. Then again some went to China, infected many others, and those in both groups traveled elsewhere. Impossible to track them.

North Korea's Kim knew enough to immediately seal the border with China at the end of 2019.. He then told Trump ,that he had a special Christmas present for him.

by Anonymousreply 292January 29, 2020 12:34 AM

R289, Some posters don't realize that GLP uses tabloid headlines to attract viewers as a come-on.

Doesn't mean like DL that there aren't extremely well-educated and brilliant, sensible posters among the 600,000+ daily visitors.

Just like there are a few racists on DL doesn't mean that everyone posting is an nasty person.

Yes there are pro- and anti Trumpers on both sites. Yes plenty of gays, bi's, and lesbians as well as their detractors post on GLP too. So ignore the negative and bizarre and seek out the knowledgeable many of who scan the internet for the best up-to-date info on current topics.

by Anonymousreply 293January 29, 2020 12:42 AM

Yeah, that makes sense. They need immunosuppressant drugs to try to block a cytokine storm. Or a steroid like Prednisone which can help with the allergies, flare ups.

Isn't the main problem fluid filling up the lungs? Whatever can prevent the human body from reacting like that. No wonder the iron lung worked. Seems like the main problem with the flu and pneumonia is in the lungs. Give morphine for the pain and in the meantime the body will get over it as long as the immune system doesn't go completely haywire and fill the lungs up in the process.

by Anonymousreply 294January 29, 2020 12:50 AM

GLP-Haters, You can read the original post at "Thewatchtowers" or "The Watchtowers" on Facebook. What I re-copied on R271 was just a re-post with a lot of extra explanations for those who didn't understand the original.

by Anonymousreply 295January 29, 2020 12:51 AM

When I had pneumonia, I was on an IV drip to stay hydrated, and it had some kind of antiviral drug in it, and I still almost died. I didn’t have diarrhea, but was still dehydrated, maybe from having a fever?

by Anonymousreply 296January 29, 2020 12:54 AM

What about diuretics? Would that be helpful?

by Anonymousreply 297January 29, 2020 12:56 AM

I have seventeen years of firsthand experience with cytokine release in a clinical (oncological) setting. I’m not going to spend any more time on this but I will say one thing: never once in those seventeen years have I heard another medical professional say, “gee, if only he had taken that Zantac-Benadryl cocktail” over a seizing, hallucinating patient in the throes of grades 3 and 4 CRS.

As grade 5 is death, 3 and 4 are the two relevant to 2019-nCoV if we are to go by past viral outbreaks. Grades 1 and 2 don’t apply here.

It’s human nature for people to want to take control of things far beyond their control, so if buying a few OTC drugs makes someone feel better mentally/emotionally, no harm done I guess. It becomes a huge problem for all of us if they use them in lieu of professional intervention.

FIN

by Anonymousreply 298January 29, 2020 1:01 AM

r288 they will be quarantined for three days minimum and up to 14 if they have any symptoms.

The flight will arrive in California tomorrow morning.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 299January 29, 2020 1:07 AM

R298, I absolutely agree with you that professional medical intervention is always ideal. But what if someone can't get to a hospital as they live way too far away? Or as people read DL from all over the world, they can't afford the medical bills? Or they live in the 3rd World and the medical care is far less than ideal?

What do you suggest as an alternative for those who don't have access to a quality hospital? Or the hospitals become overwhelmed?

Are you aware that there are currently hospital wards in the US on lock down because of "Wu Flu" patients?

by Anonymousreply 300January 29, 2020 1:08 AM

R299, Are you aware that they may be highly contagious even without symptoms? We're not even sure if the 14-day window is sufficient. Could be contagious for up to 28-days. Plus the virus is still evolving as it's now in the 3rd or 4th stage.

How about disinfecting the airplane after the flight? You know Uber drivers in China (and not only in Wuhan) are wearing full Hazmat suits, and of course that means full goggles.

by Anonymousreply 301January 29, 2020 1:11 AM

R284, The cocktail of drugs I listed in R271 are meant to be taken at the VERY 1st SIGNS of flu-like illness, and continued until the symptoms disappear or about 14-days.

Obviously if the person gets substantially worse and CRS he/she belongs in the ER hospital ward ASAP.

by Anonymousreply 304January 29, 2020 1:23 AM

r301 the article says 3 day minimum, so in reality it could be longer. I am no expert on virus incubation, but I would think a person would show symptoms within 7 days.

The only individuals this will kill are people who are already at death's door. The severely immuno compromised. It would have been the kind of thing that would fell people with full blown AIDS back in the 80s and early 90s, but healthy people have nothing to fear.

I remember working in a high school in 2009 when the Swine Flu virus hit the UK. A girl coughed as I leant over to look at her work. Next day, she was at home with Swine Flu. Was I infected? Nope.

A lot of people will come into contact with this and their immune systems will kill it straight away.

by Anonymousreply 310January 29, 2020 1:51 AM

R305, I've watched many videos online of those in Wuhan walking down the street, seemingly normal and not exhibiting any symptoms Then suddenly they drop dead as if they had a blood clot in the brain.

Wuhan nurses have also stated that many dying patients had absolutely no flu nor virus symptoms for the 1st 14+ days. Most of these videos were deleted from Twitter and YouTube after China's Communist Party imprisoned 8 journalists and then 100% shut off all forms of social media.

by Anonymousreply 312January 29, 2020 1:59 AM

R309, I wish I had your optimism. I wasn't sick at all this year.

Perhaps you didn't read about the Wuhan fitness trainer in his early 40's who suddenly died? He had no underlying medical conditions. Plus there are many returning Chinese students now under quarantine in US hospitals struggling to recover.

by Anonymousreply 313January 29, 2020 2:01 AM

No one really knows anything right now. We don't even have accurate victim counts.

by Anonymousreply 314January 29, 2020 2:07 AM

R309, Do you know that 2 Chinese doctors visited Wuhan? Not only did they get sick but so did the other doctors who stayed in Bejing when sitting next to them upon their return trip.

Plus at least 6 Communist Party Leaders have quickly died from Wu Flu. Now you know they had access to the best medical care money can buy.

Why do you think China won't let the CDC, the Red Cross, nor any other volunteer health organization in the country? How come they completely cut off 100% of all social media contact so that the truth isn't leaked to the outside world?

by Anonymousreply 315January 29, 2020 2:08 AM

R314, Actually Hong Kong reporters did have reports of how many victims were being quickly cremated as they were paying off Wuhan officials directly involved in the process.

Seeing videos early last week of numerous dead bodies on the sidewalk and waiting in line at the hospital, plus Wuhan citizens saying ambulances were overloaded and taking 3 days to pick up dead bodies is also very telling.

Did I report that Wuhan planes were repeatedly spraying the entire city streets with disinfectant?

None of the above ever occurred, nor was I ever concerned, about any previous pandemic like bird flu.

The hospital they "built" in 2 days? That was an empty building they remodeled for use as a temporary hospital. All those bulldozers? hey were leveling a parking lot.

What is weird is that they transported patients there in the middle of the night.

by Anonymousreply 320January 29, 2020 3:04 AM

R319, as far as I remember some nurses and doctors caught Ebola while treating people who had picked it up in Africa. It's been a while, so I don't know if that's still true.

R270, my mom also had it. At the time she first fell ill, she was living in a remote area and was very poor, so she didn’t go to the doctor. We know she was very ill and running a high fever, then lost consciousness, but she was alone so no one knows exactly what happened or how she got it.

She worsened over a period of years. She became more and more lethargic, lost a lot of her ability to speak, and lost a lot of motor skills and would fall a lot. Towards the end, it seemed she could not do anything unless you told her to. If you said, brush your teeth, she could do it. If you didn’t, she couldn’t think of it by herself.

I dragged her to every doctor I could find, but none of them could identify what happened. At first, the doctors told me I was exaggerating or it was just old age. It wasn’t until the last year, when she was very impaired, that finally a couple of young doctors realized no one was taking her seriously and tried to help. Even they couldn’t figure it out, but they tried at least. When she fell into a coma and died, they did an autopsy. It took three different people doing autopsies on her before finally someone recognized she had had encephalitis. The last one was samples sent to the Army, we were told. We realized they must be pretty worried if they would send it to the Army, but they wouldn’t tell us why. They said the Army doctor was very exasperated that the others didn’t recognize it.

I called the two young doctors when I got the result back, because they said they’d like to know. They apologized for not figuring it out, but said they’d never seen encephalitis since medical school and didn’t recognize it. They said if they’d done a spinal tap they would have found it, but it never occurred to them because it was so rare. I know they did a brain scan (this was some time back, maybe a cat scan), but they couldn’t see it, or didn't recognize it.

I guess we know now why they sent those samples to the Army. They must have thought there was some possibility of a dangerous contagious disease, and thought they couldn’t let it go. That’s what we thought back then, but no one would tell us anything.

by Anonymousreply 323January 29, 2020 3:19 AM

R320, GLP has several construction workers and managers who were cracking jokes watching the Twitter videos of the Chinese building the hospital. Comments after each CCP released video were even more hysterical. Reminded me of the amusement park where kids can pay to try and operate giant machinery in a really big sandbox. They kept bumping into each other.

If they were serious they could have put together a hospital in a day using fewer workers and more appropriate machinery several different ways. More likely the Chinese workers were burying the ashes of the dead..

Also why does one of the buildings have lots of bars on all of the windows? I wouldn't believe anything CCP says about Wu Flu.

by Anonymousreply 324January 29, 2020 3:28 AM

R322, At least that man has eye protection. None of the doctors and nurses in Wuhan were given any and they're all dying if not dead. The 1st victim was a 32-year-old man who got a lot of praise from the CCP for his dedication. The others were never publicly mentioned. They just flu in replacements from Bejing.

by Anonymousreply 330January 29, 2020 3:41 AM

R327, Most of the Twitter videos have been deleted by Twitter. Started reading Tues of last week. There were many of them done by a very wide variety of Wuhan residents.

GLP has hundreds and hundreds of pages of links to medical articles and personal videos with stats. Sure a lot of it is garbage but not all of it. You have to be very good at skimming through a ton of material as there are a lot of different threads. Posters discuss how some are a PR stunt while others are far, far more realistic.

I believe if a wide variety of people say the same thing, and there are medical professionals on GLP discussing what they observe, as well as Chinese translating and analyzing the videos then you get a very good idea of what's going on. Some posters are Chinese ex-pats or now live in other parts of Asia too.

by Anonymousreply 331January 29, 2020 3:42 AM

The Chinese government doesn’t want to give out much, R327. A lot of what we know is people trying to get info out via twitter, so who knows how reliable it is in a lot of cases. Reporters get thrown in jail for trying to report, so it’s civilians telling their own experiences mostly. In a lot of cases, they don’t understand themselves what they saw.

I did hear about estimates of deaths going by numbers of cremations. But that implies it’s likely no one knows how many deaths are Corona virus, and how many are people hit by trucks. There’s also the possibility that everyone that went to the hospital with a broken leg caught Corona in the hospital and died there or at home.

It sounds very contagious, and people with open wounds or even catheters are more likely to get infections in the hospital, they’re more susceptible. Your skin protects you from many diseases or bacterial infections. If you have a cut, be sure to clean it and cover it entirely when you go outside.

by Anonymousreply 334January 29, 2020 3:50 AM

R327 The median age is 57. This will change as more people die. I don't think there is anything else about most of the victims though there does appear to be more men than women. That may also have something to do with smoking. More men than women smoke and a higher proportion of Chinese smoke than Westerners.

Smokers lungs are already comprised so that may have an impact on how people are affected. Smokers tend to take longer to recover from colds and flu.

Authorities in China also reported the first case of the Wuhan virus in Tibet, previously the only region to have avoided the virus. The spread to Tibet despite the implementation of strict checks on travelers and closing of tourist sites will renew concerns about how easily the virus is transmitted, particularly when people are asymptomatic.

R341, No vaccinations are available to protect against this virus. Worse it's constantly mutating and know on it's 4th or 5th generation. That means a preventative shot that might have worked early on won't now.

Proof that it's man-made would be that's it's a combination of viruses starting out as a flu-like HIV and then it attacks the brain shutting down the organs and normal functions. Not everyone gets the 1st part so not necessarily any symptoms.

by Anonymousreply 391January 29, 2020 5:37 AM

R390, The Lancet can only report what the CCP states. Truth is all Wuhan doctors say that they ran out of testing kits very early on so just kept writing "pneumonia" on the death certificates.

Most were cremated hours after they died so their deaths were not formally recorded. Nor were those that died multiple times per day waiting in 2-day lines outside the hospital or just inside the doors.

Some died and their neighbors set fire to their homes, the smell was so horrific. Videos on Twitter were deleted of the multiple purposely set house fires.

We're not talking about the many, many begging to be seen who were told to just go home as there was no room and no beds.

R890, If the problem wasn't so serious then why were even the WHO denied access 3 separate times? Why didn't they allow the Red Cross entry? I know a humanitarian with trained medical workers in Bejing who've worked all over the world anxious to go to Wuhan and help. They were kicked out of China early on. WHY?

by Anonymousreply 392January 29, 2020 5:44 AM

in one study, researchers analyzed data from the first 41 patients who were admitted to hospitals with confirmed cases of the infection in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak is believed to have originated last month. Two-thirds had been to a large seafood market that also sold wild animals for meat and is thought to be where the virus jumped from an animal source to people. The median age of the patients was 49.

The patients displayed a wide range of symptoms, many of which were similar to those caused by SARS, another coronavirus, which caused a global outbreak in 2002-2003 that started in China. All of them had pneumonia, and most had fever and cough. Some people had fatigue; rarer symptoms included headache and diarrhea. The researchers noted that patients with SARS more frequently had runny noses, sore throats, and diarrhea than those with the novel coronavirus, which is provisionally being called 2019-nCoV.

One key finding: It’s not only people with other health conditions that are getting sick, the researchers reported. Some of the fatal cases caused by the virus have been among people with underlying diseases like diabetes, liver disease, and hypertension, but the majority of the first 41 patients infected with the disease in Wuhan were healthy. The researchers noted that SARS infections similarly did not only affect people with other conditions.

About a third of the 41 patients needed intensive care, and six of them died. Some of the patients with more serious illnesses suffered from a dangerous immune system overreaction called a cytokine storm, but the researchers said they still did not have a good understanding of how the virus affects the immune system.

Why would every country be evacuating their citizens and diplomats if the problem weren't so dire?

Why early on did all the movie theaters in China close as well as Disneyland. Likewise why did Japan and Hong Kong close Disneyland in their countries?

Why did all of McDonald's and Starbucks close if these Twitter videos were all fake and The Lancet figure of 800 deaths accurate (and what was the date of those reported deaths?)

by Anonymousreply 401January 29, 2020 6:04 AM

R341, to answer your question a bit better, no, taking a pneumonia shot will not help you avoid Corona virus.

What it may do is protect you from getting pneumonia as a complication of a flu virus (not just Corona), which can save your life. At the least it can save you from a bad bout of the flu turning into pneumonia, which can save you from having to be hospitalized and having to pay a big hospital bill. The pneumonia shot is good for five years.

I’ve always had bad lungs, and I’ve had pneumonia three times. I used to not take flu shots every year, and around this time of year I would get the flu. The flu inevitably would turn into bronchitis, which for me would go on for months. No amount of doctor visits or prescription medications would stop it. It would just go on until the warm weather, so sometimes June or even July. It was exhausting and stressful. I had bad insurance back then and a bitchy boss that wouldn’t let me take off.

Now I take the flu shot every year. A couple of years ago it didn’t work and I got the flu, but I think it helped anyway because no bronchitis. I was pretty sick but the very worst was over in about a week, which was quick for me. I took care of elderly parents, so I got the pneumonia shot as I couldn’t risk getting sick. I’ve never had pneumonia again.

Another reason to take it is that if you did have to go to the hospital for any reason, there’s pneumonia virus all over hospitals. Old people often die of pneumonia after being hospitalized for falls. Their immune system is too weak to fight it off. And people with flu, especially this flu, can get it quite easily.

The “cytokine storm” aspect of this virus involves people producing too much fluid as their body tries to wash away the virus. Their lungs fill up and their heart can stop, which may be why those people are collapsing when they’re in the store. That’s as a result of Corona virus directly.

But not everybody gets the severest case, and avoiding worse complications might mean you have a better chance at an earlier recovery if you do get it, or any flu you might get.

by Anonymousreply 402January 29, 2020 6:06 AM

The type of mask shown at R405 is not an N95 mask. It’s a surgical mask, which isn’t meant to protect you from viruses, it’s more to protect you from getting blood in your mouth or sneezing on patients.

The difference is not just the fit. An N95 mask has a finer screening ability and can screen out viruses. The surgical masks are more like putting a handkerchief over your face, very porous. If that’s all they have, no wonder the doctors are catching it.

All of these masks “wear out” very easily and can only be worn a short time. They should be replaced every few hours at least in a dangerous environment and certainly thrown away after every exposure. Never re-use a mask that may be contaminated. Straight into the trash.

Here’s a surgical mask. It filters out dust and pollen, which are larger particles than virus sized particles.

If this is what doctors are using to “protect” themselves, they’re screwed. The holes in the mask are too big, they will let viruses right in. No wonder they’re dying.

by Anonymousreply 416January 29, 2020 6:40 AM

That may be part of the reason they were diverted to a military base, R416. They will probably be debriefed about what’s going on and our government will announce it, but the individuals who surely still have family in China won’t say anything in public.

The Chinese government must be using draconian measures to shut people up to avoid panic.

by Anonymousreply 417January 29, 2020 6:47 AM

I don't know why I'm even bothering but what has been translated as "infected" at R384 actually says "fever."

Rè as a noun is used for heat, fever, high temperature, as well as ardor or passion. Another usage as a noun is "trend" or "fad" in the sense that as fad it's something that's hot right now.

But if its really that bad r117, why would the Chinese government even allow residents to fly out to the US , Australia etc., knowing that the jig is up and people will talk once they get here.

Why wouldn't they just insist that the lockdown applies to everyone in Wuhan, and not exclude citizens of other countries who will inevitably talk and expose a massive coverup? I realize there would be diplomatic implications but allowing the escape of hundreds of people who can and will talk would literally serve to completely obliterate any coverup.

by Anonymousreply 420January 29, 2020 7:06 AM

It probably has to do with existing treaties. It could also have to do with people being evacuated through embassies, which are technically the territory of a foreign country.

A few days ago, I read that the USA made an “arrangement” to move our people out with the Chinese government. France and others did the same. So maybe even a few days ago it wasn’t that bad.

by Anonymousreply 421January 29, 2020 7:09 AM

R416, I would hope that the Americans would be able to talk freely.

However I've known people whose modus operandi is to block everything out that's personally upsetting. Likewise many who've never left the US refuse to ever listen to or hear about news stories. They want to live in a mental fog.

by Anonymousreply 422January 29, 2020 7:31 AM

My point is that the response in this thread to those who are skeptical of these dire stories and wonder why not one has been conclusively confirmed beyond Twitter, 4chan, Infowars etc. has been that fear of China's communist government is preventing anyone from talking.

Yet the current exodus en masse of foreign citizens would completely thwart any further attempt to obscure the truth, which would leave one to believe that these stories are greatly exaggerated at best if not outright false, because otherwise, regardless of treaties or diplomacy, China would make every effort to silence those who could expose the truth rather than easily allow them to escape.

by Anonymousreply 423January 29, 2020 7:33 AM

To hypothesize that everyone who returns may be in a mental fog makes no sense when you're referring to literally hundreds of citizens of multiple foreign democracies. They can't all have PTSD to the extent they have no memory or idea of what's been going on in their environment in the past few weeks. It makes no logical sense and sounds like the response a paranoid conspiracy theorist would give tbh.

by Anonymousreply 424January 29, 2020 7:38 AM

R419, R423, Why do you think it took so long for the US and other countries to enable their citizens to leave China? Don't you think many wanted to leave when Wuhan was first locked down? Do you really think it was easy for top US diplomats to make the arrangements?

Why do foreign agents and trolls flood the 3 Twitter accounts I linked with the most ridiculous posts. They are so very obvious and none of their comments make any sense whatsoever. The hosts constantly complain of how they try to twist the truth in favor of the CCP. A man lying on the floor has a leg injury so must lie down? Please.

China's economy is already falling apart. Expect the Communist Party top leadership to stage a few lame attempts at PR So silly. Then they'll try to discredit any unfavorable news story. Already they blame the US for the virus attack. Really?

Black humor awaits the media as well as Twitter as the CCP try to come across in a better light. Reminds me of the Scientologists who get on DL and make endless posts trying to change the direction of the conversation.

by Anonymousreply 425January 29, 2020 7:44 AM

R424, Where in my post did I say that ALL Americans would be experiencing a mental fog or even temporary PTSD?

by Anonymousreply 426January 29, 2020 7:46 AM

I've met many professional diplomats some of whom work/worked for the State Department and none of them ever say more than a very few sentences about their work or life in other counties. They're extremely closed all of the time. That's how they got their positions.

They just nod their head and smile. Pretend to agree with anything you say.Figure out how to get you to talk so that they don't have to do anything but say, "thank you."

by Anonymousreply 427January 29, 2020 7:55 AM

r425 et Al, Now there are thousands of foreign citizens set to arrive home from Wuhan that can speak freely. Do you agree that if at least some of them do in fact confirm these currently unsubstantiated accounts, they are most likely true and if they do not confirm them then they are most likely greatly exaggerated if not outright false?

The case of a 10-year-old boy who was diagnosed with the Wuhan coronavirus even though he showed no symptoms is raising concern that people may be spreading the virus undetected by the front-line screening methods implemented to contain the epidemic.

The boy was part of a family who visited relatives in the central Chinese city over the New Year. While his parents and grandparents fell ill and were treated after they returned to their hometown, the 10-year-old appeared healthy and was only diagnosed with the virus after his parents insisted he too was tested, his doctors said, adding that he “was shedding virus without symptoms.”

“You may have mild disease spreaders that would be feeding sort of a community outbreak and they don’t go to hospital because they don’t feel that bad,” said Ralph Baric, professor of microbiology and immunology at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who has studied coronaviruses for decades and warned about their threat before the 2003 SARS outbreak.

The boy’s case, published Jan. 24 in the Lancet medical journal, was the first to demonstrate person-to-person and health-care associated spread of the newly identified virus, dubbed 2019-nCoV. The asymptomatic infection has fueled concern the pathogen, which has already spread to 15 countries and infected close to 6,000 people, may turn out to be harder to detect and contain than SARS, the similar pneumonia-like illness that erupted into a global epidemic.

While both the boy’s parents were infected, each had a normal body temperature when they sought treatment. Later, the virus spread to a sixth relative who hadn’t traveled.

Similar patterns are appearing outside China. Four cases in Germany were linked to a company training event that was attended by a colleague visiting from China who had no symptoms of disease during her stay.

Trump tried to warn us years ago!

by Anonymousreply 438January 29, 2020 2:37 PM

“These cryptic cases of walking pneumonia might serve as a possible source to propagate the outbreak,” Kwok-Yung Yuen and colleagues the University of Hong Kong, said in the Lancet paper.

The boy’s family flew from their home in Shenzhen, a city in the south of the country next to Hong Kong, to Wuhan on Dec. 29 to visit relatives, including one who was in a hospital. Two days after they arrived, the Health Commission of Hubei province announced that a group of 27 people in the city had unexplained cases of pneumonia, a statement that received little notice outside of the city at the time.

Within three to five days in Wuhan, four family members gradually developed symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue and diarrhea. On their return home, they were diagnosed with 2019-nCoV based on a viral analysis and lung scan.

The 10-year-old boy’s lungs were also scanned “on the insistence by the nervous parents” and showed signs of infection, which was confirmed by swabs of the back of his nose and throat. That meant he was capable of transmitting the virus even though the kind of tests used in airport screening for the virus would not identify him as a carrier.

It was “a rather unexpected finding,” Yuen and colleagues wrote. Yet it doesn’t come as a complete surprise to doctors in China trying to unravel the means and ways the new virus is spreading.

“Children and infants’ symptoms are comparatively mild, while older people have more severe symptoms, as of our findings so far,” Feng Zijian, deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters Wednesday.

“One of the worrying things is the walking pneumonia and especially the younger kids in whom you don’t get as much of an immune reaction,” said John Nicholls, a clinical professor of pathology at the University of Hong Kong and part of the research team that isolated and characterized the SARS virus.

I’m not buying a cover up of a cataclysmic disaster, but some of the seemingly extreme measures (quarantine, closing sites and businesses) has me a little concerned. Also, the numbers from site linked below have barely changed in almost 24 hours.

OTOH, even if social media was being manipulated and there was an active coverup with multiple nations complicit, I think markets would have reacted even more strongly than they have.

I’ll relax completely (for now) once the US passengers on the evacuation plane arrive reach California and begin communicating. They already landed and were evaluated (all good) in Alaska, but I haven’t seen any direct quotes from any passengers.

one thing is for sure, they all get pneumonia, many require intensive care...of course they don't have intensive care units for thousands and thousands...that's why they are overwhelmed...

yesterday, at the press conference, the US said they weren't sure it can be passed without symptoms. they just don't want the public to panic. it's so obvious you can transmit without showing any symptoms.

Hong Kong (CNN Business)Airlines based in North America, Europe and Asia are canceling flights to China as authorities there seek to contain the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus. British Airways, United Airlines, Air Asia, Cathay Pacific, Air India and Finnair have announced plans to slash the number of flights they are operating to China or stop flying to the country entirely. I 120% believe ( yes I know such a figure doesn't exist) that this monstrosity of a virus was created in that bio-weapons lab and not in Wuhan. 1) It's Silent Lethality- the fact that it can present with almost no symptoms in it's beginning stages making detection frustratingly difficult; 2) it's abnormally long incubation period- which along with its early stage * silent* mode DURING WHICH others can be infected. A hallmark other viruses do not share. 3) The fact that it kills nit only the immunologically weak- i.e. the very old, young and sick- but also the young and fit. And 4) the rapid mutation of the virus making it a almost a slithery creature for virologists to stalk and create a vaccine response to- once a vaccine has been created, who is to say if it will still work for the virus's current formation.

It is the Perfect killer. Does nature create such a perfect foe?- I think Not.

R440, the magnitude of what is coming out of twitter ould be awfully, hard to cover up, especially since they are allowing some foreigners to leave and they are allowing people to be interviewed by foreign media outlets.

I don't think the quarantine measures are extreme. It's a virus that can be transmitted before people even know they are sick. So facing that level of transmission, the only way to ensure containment is quarantine.

by Anonymousreply 451January 29, 2020 4:13 PM

R432, R402 here. Generally, they prefer to give it to people over sixty five I believe. However, I got the pneumonia shot all through my fifties because I was caring for my dad (congestive heart failure, diabetic, chronic bronchitis, extremely susceptible to pneumonia). If he got pneumonia he’d probably die, so I couldn’t get it either. I was his primary caretaker. I also had a history of chronic bronchitis myself, and I was pretty young for that. I got flu shots every year and that was partly to eliminate risk for him too.

If you’re eligible for the pneumonia shot, you can get it at places like Walgreens, so you could check their website to see what they say.

I don’t smoke. Smokers are higher risk for pneumonia, so they might consider that as a contributing factor to give the shot, but not the only reason. Also, COPD, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other illnesses that result in a lowered immune response might be a reason to give it. Possibly asthma, I don’t know.

If you’re concerned, one thing I would do is get the regular flu shot. It’s possible to get more than one illness at the same time, so anything that boosts your immune system is good.

I once got a bad case of the flu, and after about a week, when I had really heavy congestion, I got food poisoning. You can’t even imagine how bad this was. I was throwing up, and my head and nose were so stopped up that when I threw up, I had no way to breathe. I would have to gasp for air in between retching. It was frightening.

Anything you can do to eliminate getting other illnesses is good. Fight one fire at a time.

Coronavirus cases have TRIPLED to almost 6,200 within three days and the outbreak is now worse than SARS - but China insists spread 'will peak in the next 10 days'

World Health Organization figures show just 2,014 patients had been struck down with the SARS-like infection by Sunday, January 26. This has now risen dramatically to 6,168, with cases in the US, Australia and Canada.

Figures also show there were just 445 cases by Wednesday last week - meaning the outbreak that is continuing to escalate has increased in size by almost 14-fold in the space of seven days.

It comes after a renowned scientist at China's National Health Commission warned the spread of the infection is only going to get worse. Dr Zhong Nanshan admitted he fears the crisis will peak 'in the next 10 days'.

World Health Organization's coronavirus team may not include CDC experts,

The World Health Organization may draw mostly from within the organization for the delegation traveling to China to investigate the coronavirus outbreak, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters today.

The announcement comes the day after US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said he assumed that delegation would include staff from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"WHO experts will be those who work for WHO or who ... can work as independent experts if we lack expertise," Ghebreyesus told reporters Wednesday. "On involving other countries, the best would be bilateral arrangement, and that's what we recommend."

Just before learning yesterday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and WHO had agreed on such a delegation, Azar pressured China for more collaboration in addressing the coronavirus outbreak, noting that the United States had made several offers to send experts to the epicenter of the outbreak.

"We are urging China: More cooperation and transparency are the most important steps you can take toward a more effective response,” Azar told reporters Tuesday.

Fifth case of coronavirus confirmed in France

A fifth case of coronavirus has been confirmed in France, according to France’s Health Minister Agnes Buzyn.

The fifth case is the daughter of the 80-year-old Chinese tourist who one of the first four patients, Buzyn said on French television BFMTV.

Earlier in this thread I was repeatedly dissed for suggesting that a higher per cent of Asians and specifically Asian males were getting sick and dying. I also was repeatedly dissed for saying GodLikeProductions had posted very valid info among the obvious garbage posts, just like DL.

Note the following saying Asian males are 3/4 more likely to get this disease and die (so far.)

It may be nothing, or it may be something. I am not suggesting this is true or verified. I am simply posting this after I found it and seek someone with more experience deciphering medical info to determine what it proves.

"Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory" Here's the link to the paper--

Single-cell RNA expression profiling of ACE2, the putative receptor of Wuhan 2019-nCov

A novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) was identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China in December of 2019. This new coronavirus has resulted in thousands of cases of lethal disease in China, with additional patients being identified in a rapidly growing number internationally. 2019-nCov was reported to share the same receptor, Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), with SARS-Cov. Here based on the public database and the state-of-the-art single-cell RNA-Seq technique, we analyzed the ACE2 RNA expression profile in the normal human lungs. The result indicates that the ACE2 virus receptor expression is concentrated in a small population of type II alveolar cells (AT2). Surprisingly, we found that this population of ACE2-expressing AT2 also highly expressed many other genes that positively regulating viral reproduction and transmission. A comparison between eight individual samples demonstrated that the Asian male one has an extremely large number of ACE2-expressing cells in the lung. This study provides a biological background for the epidemic investigation of the 2019-nCov infection disease, and could be informative for future anti-ACE2 therapeutic strategy development.

Severe infection by 2019-nCov could result in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis, causing death in approximately 15% of infected individuals1,2. Once contacted with the human airway, the spike proteins of this virus can associate with the surface receptors of sensitive cells, which mediated the entrance of the virus into target cells for further replication. Recently, Xu et.al., modeled the spike protein to identify the receptor for 2019-nCov, and indicated that Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) could be the receptor for this virus3. ACE2 is previously known as the receptor for SARS-Cov and NL634–6. According to their modeling, although the binding strength between 2019-nCov and ACE2 is weaker than that between SARS-Cov and ACE2, it is still much higher than the threshold required for virus infection. Zhou et. al. conducted virus infectivity studies and showed that ACE2 is essential for 2019-nCov to enter HeLa cells7. These data indicated that ACE2 is likely to be the receptor for 2019-nCov.

Way less than 50%

Here's the link to the research paper showing Asian males so far have a 3/4 more likely chance of getting this disease and dying. More links and info are on the original thread at GodLikeProductions.

Since I don't have a medical research background I can't vouch for the veracity of the info.

by Anonymousreply 501January 29, 2020 6:40 PM

r499: Would ACE2 be inhibited by readily available ACE inhibitors already in general use for blood pressure, such as lisinopril, etc? Those are cheap and widely available meds.

by Anonymousreply 502January 29, 2020 6:41 PM

R501, Lots of speculation on the internet re why Asian males AT THIS POINT are getting severely ill and dying more frequently. Some say that there are just proportionately more Asian males living in Wuhan.

Others believe China wanted to exert their power over Hong Kong, Taiwan, and even Japan and the Philippines. Large economically prominent cities in the US and Canada also have significant Asian populations. China doesn't need an over-populated country when food sources are scarce. Note the recent pig virus.

Speculation that the troublesome Muslim Uighur population has been used for medical experiments re "Wu Flu." There are large numbers of supposedly dissident Uighur's and Falun Gong in Chinese "education camps." Are they all really needed for organ sales?

Clearly CCP does not value all of it's citizens.

[quote]Note the following saying Asian males are 3/4 more likely to get this disease and die

Like someone mentioned up thread, I think this only has to do with smoking. The men are more likely to smoke or have smoked in their life, which of course is only comprising how healthy your lungs will be if they have to fight pneumonia.

by Anonymousreply 514January 29, 2020 7:38 PM

R512. If you buy generic the costs aren't that great. Also many of us have had heartburn in the past or have visitors that could use the OTC meds even if we can't. So it isn't a useless investment.

Price of 1 of the cheap generics went up 50 Cents in 2 hours on Amazon. Another generic won't be in stock for at least another week. Word is spreading.

by Anonymousreply 520January 29, 2020 7:56 PM

R517, my ex was a very heavy smoker, 2+ packs a day. One day, he was driving to work in the freeway and a big truck spilled bleach in front of him. There was a traffic jam and he was stuck for a while. He turned around and came home.

Within two hours, his lungs were full of fluid and he was coughing up a lot of phlegm. I took him to the ER. He had pneumonia. I swear to you when he left in the morning he was absolutely fine. They put him on some sort of respirator or oxygen, then they released him with some type of device he was supposed to inhale and a bunch of antibiotics. Apparently if he hadn’t come right in he would have been in serious danger.

Looking back now, I think he had a cytokine storm, and his lungs were trying to clear something, so they filled with fluid. He could have died. So I see how people are dying so quickly.

If you smoke, now is a good time to quit, anyway.

Let’s not misclassify this disease. It isn’t in the flu family. In my mind I think of it as the Wu CV (pronounced woo coo), but there are better naming minds on datalounge.

FWIW bird flu was never aerosolized except in A ferret model in BSLs in the Netherlands and Wisconsin so it never had the capability to become a pandemic.

R544 there is an -itidine shortage, the shortage does coincide with the Wu CV and the meds are manufactured in China. However, my personal view is that the official story is probably accurate; Zantac was pulled for causing cancer and the other meds in the same category (which might also cause cancer) are not in large enough supply to meet demand.

Some were sold out, some wouldn’t be delivered for two weeks.

Odd. But, spending a couple hundred dollars on something that might save the lives of my friends and family is just insurance during uncertainty.

I will have enough of each from each list, but only because I bought redundant versions of each.

If they are unopened I will just donate them. If shit hits the fan, at least I will have something that might help my family and friends.

The economic repercussions are already open it. The shut down of most Chinese public spaces, officially or unofficially, during the Chinese version of Christmas, isn’t good for the economy.

Unless infections and deaths peak ASAP and decline quickly, the economic contagion will be more devastating than the actual disease.

I am blushing.

We’ll have better information about the mechanisms of death as soon as there are more deaths outside of mainland China. It is absolutely true that you can’t rely on information from the communist party.

The Benadryl plus heartburn meds plan would only be potentially useful if healthy people were more likely to die than immunosuppressed (like the 1918 flu) AND ALSO the local medical facilities are too overwhelmed to provide timely and appropriate treatment. Buying them now is an insurance policy in case those two things come to pass. They probably will not in the United States.

What I heard today is that it seems to be more likely that this is a more traditional killer that kills the elderly and immunocompromised. (My colleague expressed concern for me since I am on immune modulating medication that makes me susceptible to infections.)

It is serious. We aren’t all going to die, but it has the real possibility of being a worldwide pandemic and killing a non-trivial percentage of the population. The best thing any of us in the States can do to prepare is to get our flu shots and otherwise avoid preventable illnesses.

We obtained information on 5 clusters of cases, shown in Figure 3. Almost half of the 425 hospitalized with NCIP were over 60, hinting at comorbidities playing a role in the seriousness of their illness.

Children appear to have a lower risk of infection. If they do become infected, their symptoms are much milder.

Infections among healthcare workers are lower than with SARS and MERS, in which heterogeneity in transmissibility featured heavily.

No super-spreading events had been identified at the time of publication.

And the bad news:

Although 27% of the 425 sought medical help within 2 days of onset of symptoms, rates of isolation and hospitalization were much worse with a full 89% not being hospitalized until at least 5 days after onset. More diligence in rooting out subclinical infections is needed, but as patients are presenting with symptoms all over the map, coinciding with flu season, that’s not going to be easy.

Despite the lower R0 of 2.2, variability of symptoms, shortages of testing materials, overwhelmed hospitals, seasonal flu, CNY travel, and the prevalence of people who aren’t getting sick enough to seek medical treatment (thereby making isolation and quarantine incredibly difficult) all combine to make containment extremely difficult; more difficult than SARS outbreaks, which were much more straightforward and could be isolated more efficiently.

Thanks for the update R584.

Just wanted to add the most airlines are not ceasing flights into China because they care about the virus so much as because people on mass are cancelling their trips.

Also read that China are happy for citizens currently overseas to return home if they wish and will do what they can to get them home.

This is R87 again. I'm also wondering what roll smoking plays in this. Primarily because so many males smoke in China, though few females do.

Also, its freezing cold in China at the moment and that could be playing a part but only time will tell. Have read they the medical profession are hoping with the warmer weather the virus may die out.

Sure, more people die from flu every year, but the number of people who have the flu is enormous in comparison to the number of people with coronavirus.

What will happen if this starts wiping out the Chinese population, and China goes from being poised to take over the world economy to being a world pariah and a failed state?

by Anonymousreply 592January 30, 2020 11:45 AM

They are resourceful people. If 10% of their population is wiped out, they will cremate the bodies, use the heat to warm up some frigid cities, or maybe chop up the people to use a fertiliser or animal feed.

The Guardian:

China has reported its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus deaths. The death toll rose to 170 on Thursday – up from 132 the previous day, a rise of 29%. The number of confirmed cases in China now stands at 7,711, up from 5,974 a day earlier.

Almost two-thirds of airport screening tests fail to detect people with coronavirus, according to new research. A team from the London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicine found that the current techniques are ineffective because of the incubation period and the poor sensitivity of thermal scanners.
