The following actors got TOP BILLING on the following P&G Soaps
As The World Turns
STARRING Don Hastings
Edge of Night
STARRING Ann Flood
Search for Tomorrow
STARRING Mary Stuart
Another World
STARRING Victoria Wyndham
Guiding Light
STARRING Charita Bauer
When Charita died, then Don Stewart (Mike Bauer) left, so TPTB decided not to have anyone get top billing
But Kim Zimmer got special billing at the end of the cast credit crawl
And
Kim Zimmer
As
Reva Shayne Lewis.

Duncan's body was hot. Michael's curly hair was a bit weird, but he's actually become more and more handsome as he aged.
I wonder if he was always a right wing loon or if it happened gradually.

First time I've rewatched these scenes in, well, forever since they first aired.
I didn't notice it at the time, but Grant seemed really sick here, and this was right before his departure. I wonder if he was fighting an illness, or some health issue.

I was young but I remember a young John Aniston being on Love of Life or Search For Tomorrow. I remember as a kid thinking he was quite dashing
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 13, 2019 11:10 PM |
r35 Actually, John Aniston was on both Love of Life and Search for Tomorrow.
He played Eddie Aleta on Love of Life in the mid 70s.
He played Martin Tourneur on Search in the late 70s/early 80s.
He joined Days as Victor Kiriakas in 1985.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 13, 2019 11:19 PM |

Well, I'll be darned. Audrey Peters is still with us at age 92. And, of all people, Teal Ames from Edge of Night is still alive at age 87. She was the one who did a death scene, then had to be brought before the camera after the next episode to prove she was just fine.

Aunt Liz here. I'm around, reading these boards regularly. There hasn't been much to respond to, so I've kept quiet. When there is a significant AW discussion, I'll join in.
That said, today is the 30th anniversary of Mac Cory's funeral. I find it incomprehensible that its been 30 years.

Linked below is the June 16, 1980 episode of Edge of Night.
It's a significant episode for three reasons:
1. Debut of the new disco opening.
2. Includes the famous Geraldine looking over her glasses scene (go to 2:45).
3. Includes the debut of Lori Loughlin as Jody Travis at the end of episode (go to 19:30).

PS Someone in the last thread mentioned Nancy Karr and Adam Drake being an item (!?!?!?).
That NEVER happened. Adam and Nancy were friends. NEVER lovers.
The show's Supercouple in the 1970s was Adam Drake and Nicole Travis. Their romance propelled the show for many years.

I just loved the actress who played Iris' maid. Does anyone know her name & if she ever did anything other than AW/Texas?

Gretchen Oegler or something. She’s dead.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 17, 2019 5:54 PM |
There was another maid before Vivien, wasn't there?
I am blanking out on the name.

Hilda was Rachel's maid at the Cory Mansion. Before Vivien would be before my time.

I still can't believe Allison Janney was on GL for 2 years. I've seen a few YT clips and she is hysterical.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 17, 2019 11:31 PM |
Louise was Iris’ maid before Vivien. She talked to her plants a lot and gave them names like Clytemnestra.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 18, 2019 1:33 AM |
R59 YES! Louise was the maid who was there right when Iris came to town initially. She was there when Iris hosted Therese Lamonte, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 18, 2019 2:23 AM |
Louise Goddard was her name. She was originally Elliot Carrington's maid, taking care of Dennis. Then when Iris settled in Bay City, Louise worked for her. When Iris fired Louise for insubordination (not being loyal), Louise went to work for the Corys (and Iris hired Vivien) . She later married Lenorard Brooks, the Cory chauffer.
Anne Meachum played Louise.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 18, 2019 2:24 AM |
Beverlee's Alexandra also had a loyal maid on GL. I'm blanking on her name but she called Alexandra "Peanut".

Alex’s maid was named Vera, wasn’t it?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 18, 2019 5:49 AM |
Yes, Alexandra's maid was named Vera. She first appeared in the early 90s, but they acted like she'd been with the family for five decades. Yes, Vera called Alexandra "Peanut."
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 18, 2019 7:05 AM |
Why did they get rid of Vera for Allyson Janney's character? Not that I mind- both worked.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 18, 2019 7:13 AM |
[quote] Why did they get rid of Vera for Allyson Janney's character? Not that I mind- both worked.
I think Vera was meant to work with Beverlee's Alex.
Marj needed a different foil/character to bounce off of, so they went more with comedy with Ginger and Donna (Janney played Ginger, I think.)

They've never been for small govt. Look what Nixon did. Look how Reagan busted deficits.
Fiscal conservatism is not the same as fiscal responsibility. Fiscal liberalism can be fiscally responsible.

r95 So jealous of Beth. Man, when guys fell for her, they fell hard.
That opening music!!!!!! I've heard it a long time ago but that is one of the best soap musical opening score I've ever heard. It beat Y&R I think. It was sweeping, grand, beautiful. Why did they change it?
by Anonymous | reply 98 | June 25, 2019 1:59 AM |
R98, a new producer came in and thought it needed “updating” so they did an uptempo version which didn’t work at all. The original theme was indeed sweeping, grand and beautiful but it also had a mournful sadness to it which then built to a sort of triumph-over-tragedy climax. It always made me think of poor Beth Raines at the mercy of Bradley but ultimately getting away from him and moving on. I know...MARY!...but still.

I have a company from Menu.

by Anonymous | reply 101 | June 25, 2019 2:46 AM |
r99 What a dumbass that person was. That is, hands down, the best opening music. She really wasn't poor Beth- she backed talked Bradley and moved out on her own before she graduated HS. Then she had every guy fall super hard for her. I binged too much early-mid GL on youtube.
r101 I do like that but I would never have changed it from the one we all mentioned.
I am gobsmacked at how gorgeous that was. It elevates the show. I was just watching other GL openings with the same music (with different scenes) and the one that opens with Beth and Lujack riding the horse!!! I was born in '85 but had I been a young gayling, those openings would have reeled me in.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | June 25, 2019 10:45 AM |
It wasn't so much that is was about Reva but they seems pained to try to find a new storyline for her instead of organically seeing where they could fit her. It grew tiresome.
And KZ did get ugly and fat fast. That didn't help.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | June 25, 2019 11:07 AM |
R102, fuck you, dumbass. It was months before Beth had the courage to face Bradley. But first Philip “rescued” her and took her to NYC. Idiot.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | June 25, 2019 11:21 AM |
And, R102, you’ve got the timeline totally wrong. Beth graduated high school in June 1983, about a month after she first appeared in Springfield.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | June 25, 2019 11:23 AM |
r110 No, bitch. She stood up to Bradley multiple times. She was being a good girl for her mother. She didn't want her mother facing abuse so she took it. That was made CLEAR. Go back and watch some episodes you freak.

r126 Thanks for the response. It was late July 1986. I've been binge watching GL on youtube. There are videos of the day before and the day after but not of the actual day. I find that so odd. PGP did put a few DVDs out, if I remember right Roger Newcomb was involved, but they ran into some issue after a while.

Pat Bruder posted some terrific early Eighties ATWT stuff on Youtube recently. How I wish the writers would have continued to give Ellen her own stories! If an actress can go toe-to-toe with Larry Bryggman (42:20), she deserves better than babysitting and gala planning.
Jacqueline Schultz (Dee) was strangely, almost exotically beautiful. I just like watching her.

Is there any footage still around of Audra Lindley as Liz on Another World? I remember as a kid that she was much more a force to be reckoned with than Irene Dailey, who just seemed like a busybody/gossip. Also, was Dailey the murderer in the Stephanie Martin murder case on Edge of Night (my all-time favorite whodunit on any soap!)? I remember the plot vividly, but not the actress.

[quote]Perhaps Bekins' first episode was earlier. I was basing my assumption on the "The role of...." announcement at the beginning of that episode.
It's a logical assumption to make. But, back in the 70s and early 80s, they typically announced a new actor in a role for his/her first three or four episodes.
Nowadays, shows only make the announcement once. Sometimes they don't make the announcement at all, such as when Cynthia Watros took over the role on Nina on GH two weeks ago.

by Anonymous | reply 173 | July 1, 2019 9:32 PM |
AW artifacts from the 70s that should be included:
Rachel's sculpture of Mac's head. During one of the periods when Mac wasn't speaking to Iris because of her schemes, Iris stole the bust and had it in her living room, talking to it like it was Mac, transferring all her affections for Mac onto the bust. Robert Delaney ultimately broke it in a fit of rage, but I'm sure the show had a backup bust in the prop department.
Painting of Iris that was over her fireplace at the mansion.
Above ground pool that Iris had at her mansion (tacky beyond words).
Copy of the manuscript to Harry Must Die, the book the provided the info for Janice to poison Mac.
Copy of A View from the Bay, the scandalous tell-all book Jamie Frame wrote in late 1981. Pat Randolph left town in shame because of the dirt in that book.

r176 That opening was everything! How popular was GL during this time?
by Anonymous | reply 178 | July 1, 2019 10:27 PM |
R178 GL held its own against the ragingly popular GH during the Marland years and early Pam Long years.
For most of the early 80s GL was #4 or #5 - pretty solid considering GH was its timeslot opponent. There was a month or so in 1984 where GL was #1 in the ratings.
It was only after the horrible stretch in 1986-87, before Pam Long came back, that the ratings fell lower than fifth place.
There were a few times it came back up to around fifth place, during Pam's time and during the early 90s, but once it lost its ratings footing after Curlee/Demorest left it never really got it back.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | July 1, 2019 11:42 PM |
GL went as high as #2 or #3 early 90's. Then it was like the show was cursed they lost so many writers and actors at critical moments.

The GL disco opening has always been my favorite since that was the one they were using when I started watching the show. However, I preferred the updated one with Tony's karate kick as he goes "YAH!"

by Anonymous | reply 188 | July 4, 2019 10:08 AM |
Tom Eplin has been married to 3 different women, so I doubt he's gay. From wiki:
[quote]Eplin was married to his Another World costar Ellen Wheeler from 1985 to 1988. His second marriage was to Courtney Gibbs from 1991 to 1995. Both marriages ended in divorce. On June 20, 2015, Eplin married his third wife, Abilene Crabtree, in Danville, California.

by Anonymous | reply 191 | July 4, 2019 11:38 AM |
"On June 20, 2015, Eplin married his third wife, Abilene Crabtree..."
That's a "soap name" if I've ever heard one. Abilene would be either a poor, rural matriarch (Emma Snyder) or the show's hot young minx who, inexplicably, has an un-sexy, anachronistic name (Phyllis Summers, Emily Stewart).
by Anonymous | reply 192 | July 4, 2019 2:08 PM |
Well I had a escort friend who, when I told him I watched Another World, asked me if I knew Tom Eplin. When I asked how he knew him, he would not answer. That made me wonder if he was a client. I believe Tom lived in Long Beach LI during Another World and my friend was from there. Regardless I thought Tom Eplin was a total hunk. I was glad to see he went on to ATWT after AW ended.
by Anonymous | reply 193 | July 4, 2019 2:15 PM |
"I was glad to see he went on to ATWT after AW ended."
I wasn't at all happy about it at first. At a time when shows were dying, the last thing we ATWT fans needed was an influx of characters we didn't care about. One would have been fine, but no, it wasn't just Jake; it was Cass and Vicky and whoever that lady with the short, dark hair was (Vicky's mother?). I don't know them and I don't care!
But yeah, Eplin won me over and Jake was a perfect scene mate for Julia, Lucinda, and then Molly. The chemistry between Eplin and Lesli Kay was off the charts. So the last thing ATWT would do to that couple is write an asinine ghost story and then kill the male lead off, right? Right??? Ugh...

R298 Angel Lange.
She basically had the Beth Raines storyline, right down to the actor playing Bradley Raines also playing Henry Lange, her father.
(The Beth story was better, in my humble opinion.)

by Anonymous | reply 209 | July 4, 2019 9:10 PM |
Angel Lange, R208. Caleb went after her first, in the most ruthless and cynical way possible, and she had to get an abortion.
I must say, Marland's ATWT was definitely the most realistic show when it came to abortion. The female characters just... had abortions. Angel, Ellie, Julie... No asking permission, no apologizing. Hell, Julie pranced over to John Dixon at the Oakdale Yacht Club and gleefully announced, "I just took your money, went to Chicago, and got me an abortion!"

It really was a rip-off of the Beth story which was better. Why would James Rebhorn want to play the same character? His GL character was actually redeemed at the end when Beth showed back up alive in 1989. It was like Bradley left SF for Oakdale.

Tom Eplin was a good addition to ATWT. They should have kept him in storylines with Julia and Lucinda, although he did have great chemistry with Molly. Lesli Kay had one of her best scenes when Jake died, crying up a storm. So, I was very surprised at the end of ATWT, when they brought Molly back to Oakdale, that she never even mentioned Jake...like Holden was the big love of her life.
A tip of the hat to previous DL posters who never mentioned Tom Eplin's ...shall we say...expanding waistline at ATWT. No shirtless scenes for Tom!

by Anonymous | reply 223 | July 5, 2019 12:19 AM |
From all accounts, CBS and P&G wanted the AW people to come to ATWT. I don't think anyone at the show did and Goutman said yes because he was at AW before.
They thought by bringing the AW fans over they would double their ratings but it didn't work like that, and once the AW folks were written off, the show ignored that they were ever there.
by Anonymous | reply 224 | July 5, 2019 12:21 AM |
Tom Eplin actually insisted on a pay or play contract when he came back to AW the last time. Rather than pay him out, they moved the character. The other AW actors barely appeared other than Jensen Buchanan.

Well, they must have gotten a LOT of bad feedback about it, because they later had Lyla come to town and say to Katie, "Um, excuse me, but I never even WANTED you to be in those stupid pageants; you begged and pleaded until I finally said yes!" But, seriously, to even try that in the first place... That is like the LAST thing Lyla Peretti would ever do.

Why did the great James Rebhorn play the same character, a horrible character, on GL then ATWT? He is brilliant and his Bradley Raines tormenting his step-daughter Beth and her mother, Lillian, then raping her, was not to be topped. It earned GL their first acting Emmy for Judi Evans as Beth. The best scene was his tormenting Beth at Thanksgiving, her being sarcastic to him, him slapping her, and her giving zero fucks except she worried about her mother. It is riveting stuff.
Why would he do the exact story on ATWT?

Beth giggling into her mashed potatoes and peas, I think she may have thrown her food or messed it up, after Bradley slapped her was unsettling. Poor Lillian, "Now, Beth dear, please eat your food. Bradley worked hard for us to have this." Beth-"I don't care. He didn't do anything for me. All he does is torment us and you know it!" or something like that. Then she storms upstairs as Bradley screams at her.

I vividly remember the fight at the dinner table. I can't remember how it came out that Bradley was molesting her.
Can someone refresh my memory? How did Lillian & Phillip learn about it?
by Anonymous | reply 271 | July 10, 2019 12:28 PM |
I thought Phillip learned about it because Beth confided in him.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | July 10, 2019 1:16 PM |
r272 Beth did confide in Phillip at in NYC. They were hiding out. Lillian found out after they got back when Bradley found them.
Beth was scrappy and really didn't take shit from Bradley. It came across to me she would have never put up with Bradley had it not been for her mother. She backed talked the shit outta Bradley every chance she got and Judi Evans could throw a mean ass eye.
It was only after the rape she was a bit traumatized for a bit.
And to think, Phillip never slept with her until after all the Lujack romance.

I hated Judi Evans, she ruined the character of Beth for me.
by Anonymous | reply 274 | July 11, 2019 1:48 AM |
I liked Judi but there was a point after Lujack and Beth got together that basically every show was Beth farting and everyone else on the show sniffing it and talking about it.
People complain about Reva eating the show but honestly, for a big chunk of time, Beth was worse.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | July 11, 2019 2:11 AM |
r275 Yes, there was a time when they went into Beth overload. She was very popular and her and Lujack were enormously popular so it made sense. I liked Judi but there were times she just phoned it in they worked her so much.

LOL R277 - one of the comments on that video:
"It's the most stunning, romantic, sexy, sweet and breathtaking montage scene ever done on a soap. So fresh with the bike, horse and beach. A rare instance when everything was perfect, the song, the storyline, the characters, the acting, the location, the lighthouse, the motorcycle and the horse. I swear even the horse is smiling when it looks at the camera and Vincent even pets it kind of acknowledging that the horse even thought the scene was truly perfect, lol! Nothing in nighttime television now even approaches this caliber. Look what's become of TV and film."

I know GL being "the Reva Show" is well known, but ATWT did the same thing with Lily, Carly, Gwen and Katie. I'd love to see a poll about which of these women got the most hate for dominating the show.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | July 12, 2019 1:22 AM |
r287
GL had first the Beth show but it was way more balanced with lots of characters getting time. Beth had good stories until the Infinity storyline. Then Judi left the show and Beth wasn't recast for 3 years. Then the Reva show (86-90) but, again, more balanced. She had good storylines so it wasn't as bad. The Reva show (97-09) was bad because they stuck her in terrible stories after terrible stories except the Annie saga.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | July 12, 2019 1:31 AM |
"I know GL being "the Reva Show" is well known, but ATWT did the same thing with Lily, Carly, Gwen and Katie."
It's really all about the writing, though, isn't it? Did the show "revolve" around Lily in the same way it did around Katie? I would argue no. Because of Lily's murky maternity, we saw other characters go on fascinating, complex journeys of their own: Lucinda, Iva, Emma, Holden, John, Craig, Sierra... Marland played out all the beats for each and every one.
Did we see any such journeys for the characters in Katie's life? No. She had sex with Simon. And then she had sex with Mike. And then she had sex with Henry. And then she had sex with Jack. And they all just acted like guys having sex with a hot blonde would act. And the other people in Katie's life-- Margo, Craig... well, that's it-- would shake their heads and say, "That's Katie." I don't know what that is, but it isn't story. It isn't character building.
It really is a shame, because when Katie finally hooked up with Brad, Terri Conn showed what she could do. Don't know why the writers suddenly gave a damn about making her a real human being, but Katie and Brad had a depth that had been missing from her previous couplings. It was goofy and sweet and ultimately tragic, and both Conn and Austin Peck were terrific. Too late, alas... And then we were back to the same old same old with the ridiculous pairing of Katie and NuNuNuNuChris.
by Anonymous | reply 289 | July 12, 2019 2:30 AM |
R289 The fact that she fell for Austin Peck in real life could have also played a role there.
I don't necessarily disagree with you on Brad vs the others, though.
I think what you described really had everything to do with how soaps overall were being written and run by that point. They no longer had writers who would mine those rich nuances where one story arc could last six months to a year.
Actually, it probably wasn't the writers who made those decisions. I think the network and P&G didn't want anything so complex. They gambled that old fans who liked the complex, multilayered stuff would stick around for the simplified stuff and then they'd gain younger viewers with the simplified formula. They lost THAT gamble.

Watching those videos Patsy Bruder is uploading makes it clear how much 1980-5 was all Stewarts (Ellen, David, Dee, Annie, Betsy...even Kim is really a Stewart at that point), few Hugheses (little Don, Bob, some Tom). Marland really resurrected the Hugheses.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | July 12, 2019 9:26 PM |

Oh gawd yes, R294. You are my BFF!
Bruder was OK in small doses as a talk-to but she was terrible when called upon to "act." I assume she was ATWT's version of Mary Matthews - the simple, one note talk to that got into a tangle w/Harding Lemay.
David's funeral is where I realized just how truly terrible she was.

Marland did have some sort of storyline for Ellen after they killed off David. Some sort of investment deal in retirement condos or something involving Ralph Mitchell. But after a bunch of set up it was just dropped.

by Anonymous | reply 305 | July 14, 2019 12:17 AM |
That was the Rick played by Con Roche in the 70s and mid-80s. He hated Bob (because Bob was involved with his mother Jennifer) and allied with John in the 70s. He was a terrible doctor and eventually left town. He came back in 1981 for the PCP story. Then he came back again about 5 years later and it as revealed that he and Howard Lansing had taken Kim's baby, told Kim it was stillborn, and John found out after the fact but never told Kim. And that was Sabrina.

by Anonymous | reply 311 | July 14, 2019 11:57 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 312 | July 14, 2019 12:31 PM |
That was one of those stories where they had to move the timeline a bit to make it work, because the whole initial Bob/Kim/Jennifer story and Frannie's birth was 1972. But Julianne Moore was playing a 22-ish year old Frannie, so I think when they did the baby switch/Sabrina story they mentioned the year as 1965.

r317 Michael Christopher is a pretty generic name.
But Howard Lansing is rather distinctive. As you said, Marland must have really liked the name since he created two characters with that non-generic name.
I'm reminded that he also apparently liked the name Beatrice. Marland is credited with naming the Cory maid Beatrice Gordon (Sally Frame's biological grandmother) on AW in the mid 70s, as well as creating Bea Reardon (Nola and Tony's mother) on GL in the early 80s.
Wonder who the real Howard Lansing and Beatrice were in Marland's life.

Doug Marland's real name was Marland Messner. He seems to have had a very similar story to the Reardons and Snyders. Like Harding Lemay, he borrowed heavily from his life.
The NYT obit for Doug showed his mother as Kathryn B. Messner. I Googled Kathryn Beatrice Messner to test R320's theory and sure enough, Beatrice was his mother's middle name.

I feel GL just had the worst luck from 89-93. They lost so many of their talents whether it was actors/writers/producers at crucial moments.
I am angry Pam Long quit in a huff. I think she would have stayed head writer for years and years.
by Anonymous | reply 338 | July 16, 2019 10:27 PM |
Ron Raines and Marj Dusay were horrible recasts. The worst. Any decent EP would have canned them early on.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | July 16, 2019 10:29 PM |
R338 But Pam leaving led to some of the best years of GL. They were on fire in 1991 and 1992. Agree that the bad luck kicked in when they lost Beverlee and Kimberly Simms within a short time, which was two thirds of their biggest storyline.
Plus they lost Sherry Stringfield for Liz Keifer. I loved both and know some of you don't, but even as well as Liz did (in my opinion) it was a bump in the story and something the audience had to accept.
Same thing happened to ATWT when they lost Martha Byrne, Julianne Moore and Hillary Smith all within a few months of each other, which put a big dent in three of the biggest storylines at ATWT at the time. And ultimately only one recast was really successful (Ellen Dolan) as Frannie was eventually written off and Martha returned years later.

[quote] Ron Raines and Marj Dusay were horrible recasts. The worst. Any decent EP would have canned them early on.
Marj was great in the first go-round. She came close to the tone Beverlee had set and was able to capture some of the qualities of the original Alex. But something happened after she was there for a few years, and especially after she left and then returned. She was more over the top, played Alex as more of a cartoon villainess. And the writers didn't help. Putting a wig on Alex to gaslight Reva? Alexandra would have never done that. She had PEOPLE for that.
Ron was indeed miscast from day one. He played Alan in name only.

"And ultimately only one recast was really successful (Ellen Dolan) as Frannie was eventually written off and Martha returned years later."
They should have given Mary Ellen Stuart more of a chance as Frannie. I loved the chemistry Frannie and Sean had, but TPTB just didn't seem to care that much about either character. Mary Ellen had a down-to-earth vibe that grounded Frannie, and I liked that.
Frannie, Betsy, and Andy were three characters that I felt were too important to just be written out completely.

Marj Dusay was excellent casting as Alex in 1992. Anyone who saw her Myrna Clegg on Capital knows how fierce she could be. Her Pamela Capwell on Santa Barbara was an intensely complex character as well. Thus, there was every reason to think she could do justice to Alexandra Spaulding. And for the first 3-4 years she did.
Problem was, when she came back from AMC in 2002, she decided to take it more over the top. Her Vanessa Bennett on AMC was way over the top, and she essentially continued playing Vanessa when she came back to GL. Unfortunately, no one at GL told her to reign in it. Paul Rauch, who would have had no problem telling her to tone it down, was fired right after Marj returned and John Conboy seemed content to let her keep going over the top.
And then for the rest of the GL, Marj continued taking it over the top and turned Alex into a cartoon.
In fairness, Robin Strasser did the same thing with Dorian on OLTL. When Strasser returned in 2003, she started going over the top. No one told her to tone it down and she turned Dorian into a cartoon as well.

Stage and film star Barbara Rush who ended up playing Nola Orsini on AMC in 1992-93 was invited to play Alex temporarily while they looked for someone to take over the role permanently. She obviously declined.
On AMC, Nola Orsinia was the mother of Ted Orsini, the lookalike character that Michael E. Knight (Tad Martin) played when he first returned to the show in 1992

Marla Adams would have been a fantastic Alex recast. She should have been the producer's first choice when La Bev left. Anyone who saw what Marla did with Belle Clemmons on Secret Storm or with Myrna Clegg on Capital (temporary recast after Carolyn Jones died) knows she would have been amazing as Alex.

So, who should they have cast as Alan Spaulding when they decided to bring the character back in 1994?
by Anonymous | reply 352 | July 17, 2019 3:31 AM |
I've always been a fan of Peter Brown, best known for playing Dr. Greg Peters on Days in the 1970s. Wonderful actor. Not afraid to take risks. He could have played Alan expertly. However, he would have been 59 years old in 1994. So, he would probably been too old for Alan.
by Anonymous | reply 353 | July 17, 2019 5:07 AM |
Here's a picture of Peter for those who don't recognize the name.
PS I also think they should have cast Peter as Alex Wheeler on Texas in 1980. Alex Wheeler was the great love of Iris's life, the biological father of Iris's son, Dennis. Peter would have been 45 in 1980, the same age as La Bev. And he was a strong enough actor, he could have held his own against La Bev, could have brought out many vulnerabilities in Iris
Instead they foolishly cast Bert Kramer as Alex Wheeler. Although he started off strong in the role, Kramer quickly fizzled out. He couldn't begin to hold his own opposite Beverlee. In fact, for the last six months of the year that Kramer was on the show, they had Alex Wheeler in a wheelchair, barely able to speak. That was the only way he could even begin to be an equal screen partner with Bev.

Lenore Curtain stood trial for his murder. But it was really Walter Curtain, her husband, who killed Wayne. Walter had the scarf that could exonerate Lenore the whole time!!!

I just watched tonight's Sweetbitter early.
PAS was a guest star. His character & wife propositioned one of the waiters (cute series regular).
They wanted to pay him $5000 to come to their house & watch him masturbate. as they watched.
PAS looked amazing! Better than ever IMO.
The waiter did take them up on the offer & masturbated as they watched.

No idea what Sweetbitter is. Never heard of it.Care to fill us in?
I assume the PAS you are mentioning is Paul Anthony Stewart. If that is correct, Paul has definitely fallen off the radar in the past decade. Glad to know he's still alive and kicking.

Sweetbitter is a drama on Starz. The second season just started.
It revolves around the people working in a highend restaurant in NYC.
Drugs, sex, friendship, Machiavellian power plays. I enjoy it. One of the waiters is a crazy gay Russian but he's lovable.
PAS's episode airs tonight.

David Hedison has died. He played two roles on AW over the years.
He also was turned into an insect in the original 'The Fly' and appeared as a CIA agent in a pair of James Bond films.
David Hedison, who starred as Captain Lee Crane on the 1960s ABC submarine series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, died Thursday in Los Angeles, a family spokeswoman announced. He was 92.
The handsome actor also portrayed scientist André Delambre, who got turned into an insect in The Fly (1958) long before Jeff Goldblum ever did, and he played CIA operative Felix Leiter in the James Bond films Live and Let Die (1973) and Licence to Kill (1989).
From 1964-68, Hedison's character worked aboard the submarine Seaview under the command of Adm. Harriman Nelson (Richard Basehart) on 110 episodes of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The show was created by Irwin Allen, based on his 1961 movie of the same name.
Born Al David Hedison on May 20, 1927, in Providence, Rhode Island, Hedison discovered the theater while attending Brown University and studied in New York under Sanford Meisner at The Neighborhood Playhouse and with Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio.
He worked alongside Uta Hagen and Michael Redgrave in-off Broadway productions by Clifford Odets and Christopher Fry, among others, and made his big-screen debut in the World War II naval drama The Enemy Below (1957), starring Robert Mitchum.
After starring in the original The Fly and Son of Robin Hood in 1958, he signed a contract at Twentieth Century Fox, changing his stage name to David Hedison.
In the 1990s, he played Spencer Harrison on the NBC daytime series Another World.
His wife, Bridget Hedison, a producer on Dynasty and its spinoff The Colbys, died in February 2016. Survivors include his daughters Serena and Alexandra, the wife of Jodie Foster.
"Even in our deep sadness, we are comforted by the memory of our wonderful father," his family said in a statement. "He loved us all dearly and expressed that love every day. He was adored by so many, all of whom benefited from his warm and generous heart. Our dad brought joy and humor wherever he went and did so with great style."

This is the only episode I can find with Grant actually on-screen, though he's listed in the credits of a few others from summer 1986 - a few months before he returned to GL.

According to We Love Soaps yesterday was the anniversary of Reva baptizing herself the Slut of Springfield.
The site said she won her first Emmy for that year but her reel did NOT. include that clip.
WTF? Anyone know what was in her reel because it had to be Earth shaking. I'm mean the Slut episode is Iconic.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | July 30, 2019 7:55 PM |
I think it had another fight between Josh and Reva. The slut of Springfield scene is amazing, but I guess the way it was structured then, you had to submit an entire episode and that episode was not the best one to get a cross section, it just had that one fantastic scene.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | July 30, 2019 7:57 PM |
Slut of Springfield was 35 years ago TODAY.
It aired on July 30, 1984. It was counter programming to the debut of Santa Barbara which happened 35 years ago today on NBC.
by Anonymous | reply 398 | July 30, 2019 9:47 PM |
I had forgotten that Santa Barbara was scheduled at 3:00pm. By the time I became aware of it, close to it's end, my local affiliate aired it earlier. NBC must have had some real faith in the show, to place it opposite GH and GL, both of whom were enjoying high ratings.

[quote]NBC must have had some real faith in the show, to place it opposite GH and GL, both of whom were enjoying high ratings.
I wouldn't call it faith as much as I would say unrealistic expectations. Putting a new show opposite two of the highest rated shows was fool hearty. Show should have been sandwiched between Days and Another World in the 2 p.m. time slot.
Similarly, NBC should have also sandwiched Texas between Days and AW at 2 p.m. when it debuted in 1980. And that debut was 39 years ago this week -- happened on Aug 4, 1980.

Earlier this week We Love Soaps said it was the anniversary of the day Iris tried to commit suicide. Before she went under she was saying something to "Daddy".
Anyone remember why she attempted suicide? Was it when she learned he wasn't her beloved daddy?
Anyone know if her suicide attempt is on Youtube?
by Anonymous | reply 401 | July 30, 2019 10:42 PM |
[quote]Anyone remember why she attempted suicide? Was it when she learned he wasn't her beloved daddy?
The suicide attempt in 1975. Iris didn't find out she was adopted until 1978.
The suicide attempt was during one of the periods when Mac was on the outs with Iris because of her scheming to break up his marriage to Rachel. If I recall correctly, Mac hit the roof and cut Iris out of his life after finding out she had hired Phillip Wainwright to break up the marriage.
I think this was the first time he'd ever cut her out of his life, although Mac would do it at least once a year during the remainder of Lemay's run on the show. She was despondent. Feeling she couldn't live without beloved Daddy, she took the pills.
Is it on Youtube? I doubt it. Very little from the 1970s has survived. But hunt for it on Youtube and if you find it, please post the link here.
by Anonymous | reply 402 | July 30, 2019 10:53 PM |
Aunt Liz, I bow to your Iris expertise!
Do you happen to know/remember when she did the whole "DAAAADDDYYYY" screaming thing, and wasn't that with his bust or something nearby? I remember seeing it as a wee one but can't place the year.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | July 30, 2019 11:44 PM |
Thanks for your kind words, ORD.
I believe Iris stealing the bust was 1976, farily soon after Rachel started sculpting on the show (something Lemay added since Wyndham was a sculptor in real life).
Iris had many DADDDDDDDDDYYYYYYYYYY breakdown scenes in the 1970s. They happened at least once a year, usually connected to Mac cutting Iris out of his life for her latest schemes.
But yes, I do specifically remember a DADDDDDYYY breakdown scene with the bust nearby.

R400 It wouldn't have been much better, OLTL and ATWT were both highly rated during the 1980's, as well, especailly when both TEXAS and SB started.
by Anonymous | reply 405 | July 31, 2019 2:05 AM |
If NBC had put Texas at 2 p.m., it would have gotten a huge lead in audience from Days with its higher ratings. Similarly, a lot of people might have watched Texas while waiting for Another World to begin at 3 p.m.
Ditto putting Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. instead of 3 p.m. when it debuted. In 1984-85, Days was high in the ratings and would have offered a very strong lead in for Santa Barbara.

...and this one using the final, 1984 theme arrangement:
by Anonymous | reply 415 | August 1, 2019 2:36 AM |
Interesting. The last two are the best IMHO. But too much OTT scenery included.
Soaps got lost when they tried to go big. The more clever thing would be to narrow the focus. I always thought if there was an EON reboot at least some of that week's episodes should be a night court or police station, specifically showing nightlife and contemporary worries and stories through that lens.
EON would be a good kind of show to do a Black Lives Matter/Blue Lives Matter kind of story. Subdued, in the classic old style, but really showing the characters in each camp.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | August 1, 2019 2:40 AM |
R416 EON would be the perfect soap to reboot, as a syndicated nightly show for the 7:30pm/eastern local access timeslot leading into primetime, like how the soaps in the UK are. The Jeopardy/Entertainment Tonight timeslots. Even the name, if people couldn't remember when it was on, they could say at the Edge of night.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | August 1, 2019 6:00 AM |
R417 Except those shows make pisspots of money. Unlikely any station would replace them.
I could see EON being done as a late night soap, and then repeating in the afternoon, too.
by Anonymous | reply 418 | August 1, 2019 2:03 PM |
R418 They do but the other affiliates, in those markets, are stuck with less than competitors that don't do as well, this would provide them with top notch counter programming.

Rebooted Edge of Night would be perfect for the 11 p.m. or 12 midnight time slot. Wouldn't necessarily get giant ratings, but would likely get a cult following.
Back in the mid 80s, USA network ran reruns of the last four years of Edge (1980-84) at 12:30 a.m. I remember watching it and feeling that was just a perfect time slot for it.
