But he's by no means alone and he may choose to trail blaze in other ways. Ah well".

I am glad the core discussion will continue here, minus the goofy in-fighting and immature name-calling. I am a middle-aged straight woman who LOVES OL and the characters of Jamie and Claire. I found these threads originally because I was curious as to how the two actors could so realistically portray these sex scenes and NOT be sexually involved. Yes, yes I know they are actors and it is their job, but it simply seemed that there was more to it than that.

Pretty easy to work this out - he is engaged to his [unnamed] long-term partner who is possibly pregnant; he's split with his partner; he secretly got married; he's getting divorced; he is going to retire at 39; his dog died; no, his dog, a labrador called 'Spinee' [appropriate name], is recovering from surgery and he's posted about it on twitter; he died (on 14 Oct at 11 am in case you missed it); he's going to be the next Bond [of course]; Balfe is going to be Bond Girl to his Bond; he is in consideration for Time Person of the Year; he's practising Gangham style dancing after PSY invited him to join him dancing earlier this year [well, he couldn't be much of a worse dancer]; nude photos taken from his phone have been leaked and the FBI is investigating, and of course the Internet has exploded after they were posted [pictures of nude works of art, and one puppy shamelessly wearing only fur]. And so on..... Non-existent and easily checkable media reports are cited - eg Scottish Sun; Facebook and Twitter 'meltdowns' that didn't happen are reported; twitter posts he didn't make are described. It's clearly a pretty witless but somewhat amusing parody of the HW gossip mill, but some readers will believe it (one woman worshipper supported him being Time Person of the Year).

I'll bet Heughan didn't expect quite such a negative reaction on twitter to his joking about Shitner being in a/the sequel to Bloodshot - some supporters but far more critical of his misogynistic friend Bill, including this little gem 'He can provide a short blonde wannabe actress to play your character's escort perhaps?' Bet some of the posts disappear mysteriously.

When I was growing up most adults I knew made sneering or at best patronising references to homosexuals as queers, fairies etc. Comments made by people who would have considered themselves good people, who were kind to children and animals.!. As an adult I realised that many of the best writers,directors.designers and painters, whose work gave me so much pleasure , were homosexuals. I do hope that in the not too distant future there will be no stigma whatsoever attached to being gay.

The younger LGBTQ folk I deal with sometimes cannot believe that homosexual sex was not de-criminalised in my country's last state until 1997, and that even in the 1980s off-duty cops used to bash gay guys for fun. Things certainly have moved forward - same-sex marriage; same-sex couples in tv shows etc (even if some of it is tokenism - 'see, look how open-minded we are'); the Gay Mardi Gras and Pride events, with police joining in and dancing. And yes, you are right - the latter generations are moving things along. SM can also play a really damaging part - on the one hand it can be encouraging, but on the other it can be an instrument for homophobic hate and isolation.
