A Friendly Formatting Reminder

When responding or commenting to a previous poster in the same thread, there is way to do it so that someone reading your post can scroll over the referred to post and actually read what was written in that post, without having to go back into the thread and found "reply 34" or whatever.

We seem to have an influx of new DLers (welcome!!) who don't know this very easy function. I'm here to help!

Simply write a capital r, then the number of the post. It's important to:

1. Capitalize the R.

2. Leave NO space between the R and the number of the post you want to refer to.

3. Use the correct number of the post, which you can easily see when you read the post initially.

Thanks!!

by Anonymousreply 603November 29, 2018 5:54 PM
1. Capitalize the R.

Wrong.

by Anonymousreply 1November 21, 2012 3:06 AM

Not to crap on your advice, OP, but it's not necessary to capitalize the "R" as you have noted in Step 1. If a writer uses a lower case "r," DL will change it to upper case provided your other steps are followed.

Again, didn't mean to be a dick, but I've learned this from trial and error.

by Anonymousreply 2November 21, 2012 3:07 AM

r1 is correct as is r2...

by Anonymousreply 3November 21, 2012 3:09 AM

Give OP a break. An upper case R used to be necessary.

Good idea for a thread, OP. Perhaps we can use it to discuss other formatting issues.

by Anonymousreply 10November 21, 2012 3:15 AM

R8, use the square brackets like this [, and this ], in between them type the word quote in lowercase, follow it with a space, and then copy and paste whatever paragraph you wish to quote.

No need to close it, the natural end of the paragraph will do it for you. However, for multiple paragraphs you will have to start each one this way.

by Anonymousreply 75November 21, 2012 5:22 PM

While we're on the topic... you can only post one link in a post... and the full URL has to go in the "URL:" box below the message.

If you put the URL to a page, then the link will take you to that page.

If you put the link to a YouTube Video, then for anyone who has the "Show YouTube Inline" setting checked, they'll see the video and be able to play it without leaving the thread or opening a new browser tab or window.

If you put a DIRECT link to an image, then for anyone who has "Show images inline" setting checked, they'll see the picture right here in the thread without ever having to click the link (unless they want to see the picture bigger, in its original size).

Note that not all pictures will show up inline in the thread... only standard jpg and gif files. Animated GIFs, and PNG format images won't show up... you'll still have to click the link to see them.

If you're not browsing at work, you should click the "Settings" link in the left side-bar towards the top of the page, and check both "Inline" check-boxes. Then close the settings box (there is no "save"... it takes effect immediately). See how you like it.

The "quote" tag works differently than the "italic" and "bold" tags.

The "quote" tag is used at the start of a paragraph. You "close" it just by pressing enter twice (there needs to be a blank line). It always assumes that the quote is the entire paragraphy. And only one paragraph.

The "italic" and "bold" tags require closing tags to tell them when to stop... "/italic" and "/bold".

Tags are enclosed in square brackets, without the quotes, and with no spaces.

R91 does not understand the issue. When someone references a post that comes after them, the problem is the with the poster not the reader. I am number 100 in this thread. If I reference R189 that is MY mistake not the reader who did not reload!

by Anonymousreply 101December 15, 2012 3:28 AM

R101, you're R101, not R100.

And sometimes if you haven't refreshed in a while, the numbers will appear "off" to you. You can see a message as R40 and refer to it as such, but it might really be R60... which you'd see if you refreshed.

by Anonymousreply 102December 15, 2012 3:58 AM

Sometimes the numbering issue becomes enough of a problem that refreshing doesn't help. When that happens you have to get out of DL and then reload. It's the only way to make the numbering work.

When you do that, you lose your scrolled threads if you haven't starred them.

by Anonymousreply 103December 15, 2012 4:07 AM

I am sorry that I did not forsee that another person would be posting as I was writing.

I think DL refreshes when you click on a thread, does it not? So when I click on a thread and find a post refer to another post that does not exist yet, (or did not exist when they wrote their post), how would refreshing again help.

What you are saying is that I when I click on a thread and find the latest post refers to not yet extant post, I need to leave the new post that I just called up and go back to the threadlist to refresh and then return?

I usually only visit DL for about 2 minutes at a time. To have to refresh multiple times in that short visit seems like a quirk of the web circa 1997.

by Anonymousreply 104December 15, 2012 4:18 AM
I think DL refreshes when you click on a thread, does it not?

That's not what we're talking about.

What we're talking about is the fact that the auto-refreshing sometimes goes awry, and the longer you say on the page, the more likely it is to stutter or stop or miss messages.

We're talking about hitting the refresh button on the browser (or closing the window entirely and coming back in). Yes, you lose your progress in the thread watcher... but that's the price you pay.

As an example, I left the browser open all day. When I came back to it, it said there were 15 replies in a thread. So I replied. But nothing updated at all, it was like the place was dead. When I refreshed the page, that thread actually had 60 replies in it, and the auto-updating resumed.

by Anonymousreply 105December 15, 2012 4:29 AM

It's not in the official guidelines, but if you're the first to respond to a thread, format accordingly:

[cunt]place remark here[/cunt]

by Anonymousreply 106December 15, 2012 4:34 AM

The post numbering problem seems to be more of an issue in fast-moving threads. At least, that's been my experience.

by Anonymousreply 107December 15, 2012 5:00 AM

I think it's funny when someone puts at, say, response r108 a comment that r109 is an idiot so that when r109 is reached, no matter who is r109 will be referenced.

Hilarity ensues!

by Anonymousreply 108December 15, 2012 7:38 AM

r108, you are an ass.

by Anonymousreply 109December 15, 2012 7:40 AM

I usually do not stay on thread pages more than a minute or two and still frequently encounter the wrong page ref phenomena.

R105 seems to think that the issue is about the number of replies listed.

Looking back as some examples I remembered the refs were still wrong--even refreshed. So I still think this is entry error.

by Anonymousreply 110December 15, 2012 12:05 PM

Oh, some of it is human error.

But the technical glitches in numbering are not about staying on "thread pages", but about staying on the site in the same window/tab for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 131April 9, 2014 1:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 132April 9, 2014 1:48 PM

I'm curious about "bump". Also, some poster uses Hisssssssss. What is that supposed to mean.

by Anonymousreply 133April 9, 2014 1:56 PM

Bump is merely a way of bringing a thread back to the top of the list, presumably to make it more visible.

by Anonymousreply 134April 9, 2014 2:00 PM

That is, you "bump" it up the thread.

by Anonymousreply 135April 9, 2014 2:11 PM

So, just by typing 'bump' moves the thread to the top?

by Anonymousreply 136April 9, 2014 2:27 PM

R136, are you retarded?

by Anonymousreply 137April 9, 2014 2:31 PM

Ignore the child at r137.

You can type anything in the reply box and it will move the thread to the top of page 1. Sometimes you will see gibberish or even just a period punctuation mark that was used to get the thread to the top of page 1.

The hiss thing is from a thread about elder gays who were allegedly hissing at some people in a theater...I think.

by Anonymousreply 158February 19, 2015 4:20 PM

I'm sure this is obvious to most of you but I wanted to explain it clearly to any newcomers on DL. Posting a reply on DataLounge is not the same as writing an email. You can't mix regular sentences and links to websites together in the message box. You should write your regular comments in the message box. Paste any links into the Url box below the message box. If you include a link in the message box, the post will be rejected as soon as you submit it.

Someone made the first suggestion to using the r# to respond; the archives might ultimately reveal who that was

by Anonymousreply 324August 19, 2017 10:53 PM

Do we know which words are currently banned? I got censored for the first time a couple of weeks ago when I wrote the n*a*m*b*l*a acronym. It just looked like [...] when it came out. Does using one of them put you on the naughty list or something?

Also, I wish we had a preview option for our posts. My entire posts come out in italic every now and then because I forget to close one of the tags or close them incorrectly. It would prevent so many mistakes and would be much easier to implement than an edit function as well. This is available on some Reddit apps and I'm telling you, it makes all the difference.

by Anonymousreply 325August 19, 2017 11:13 PM

A few months ago someone linked to a page where you could automatically vary print styles and symbols, then copy to DL. Would someone post that again.

And another vote for preview.

So if there's a green icon in a response box, someone has liked it? Is like hitting the WW button?

by Anonymousreply 373January 6, 2018 12:30 PM

How can you see the number of likes though??

by Anonymousreply 374January 6, 2018 12:33 PM

R373 No, you have to click the green icon in the post you want to like and then click the blue WW button. That sends the like and the poster will get a notification within ten seconds or so if he's currently on DL. If not, he'll see them later. However, you only see the likes on desktop browsers, not on mobile phones.

And you need to have notifications enabled in your browser to see the WWs you get.

by Anonymousreply 375January 6, 2018 12:34 PM

R374 DL will usually prompt you through your desktop browser to enable the notifications on this site when you get your first like.

by Anonymousreply 376January 6, 2018 12:35 PM

R376 Is seeing the likes worth it? Cause I dont really like using DL on desktops

by Anonymousreply 377January 6, 2018 12:37 PM

R374 Oh, I see what you mean now. You can't see the number of likes any other poster's post gets, like on Facebook, Twitter, or Reddit. I think that's for the best, though.

by Anonymousreply 378January 6, 2018 12:37 PM

R377 Oh, yeah, it's definitely worth it. I feel vindicated for some of my more controversial posts, and happy whenever I see that my jokes landed. And I just feel more included in general.

by Anonymousreply 487May 21, 2018 4:45 AM

Sorry if this was already mentioned as I read many, but not all of the posts here. Some of the new people don't realize that the link (R and the post # no spaces) does not appear until AFTER they click "POST."

Another thing that I noticed the new posters here doing is creating conflict which often results in getting blocked by other posters. Disagree yes, attack no. Attacking other posters and telling them what they should think/believe just gets you blocked.

For one example, I read a post on a recent thread that said, "I think Oprah overindulges and has no self-control which is why she has a weight problem" and the reply was "She does not overindulge." Stupid replies get you F&F and/or Blocked. If there's one thing DLers can't stand it's stupid. That poster would have been better off not replying or simply stating "I think her weight problem is because of fill in the blank."

Correcting inaccurate or misleading information and stating facts is fine, telling others they are not entitled to their opinion and how to think and what to believe is not okay. The newbies do this. Stop. You are getting blocked and it's not worth it because you can't change how someone thinks. You can challenge a post and support your viewpoint or provide more accurate information / links, but you can't change their beliefs. And attacking others and getting nasty because only you are entitled to your opinion, but you don't think others are entitled to their opinion, will get you blocked for trolling.

by Anonymousreply 488May 21, 2018 5:14 AM

What does the eye above mean? Orange eye, black eye?

by Anonymousreply 489May 21, 2018 2:05 PM

Orange means you are watching the thread and it will appear at the top of the list of threads. Black means you are not.

The eye turns orange automatically if you post in the thread. Or you can watch a thread by clicking on it and turning it orange. You can also click on an orange eye to turn it black and remove it from your watched threads.

r488 What has most of your rant got to do with formatting? It's just the way you're used to communicating on DL yourself; others prefer to convey their thoughts differently. I'm sure people will survive if they get blocked by you.

HOW TO CUE A YouTube VIDEO.

PAUSE the video where you want it to start playing.

Click on SHARE.

A small window will pop up.

Select START AT.

This creates a new URL with your start time.

Click on COPY.

R501 Theres three white boxes that make up a post.

The 1st big square one where you write your main post. Then underneath it theres 2 more , both thin rectangular white boxes

You want the 3rd one, the last, where it says just above it Web Site Link

I think you click on your image and select copy image location and paste it into the last box. Directly over where it says Link - optional (example: http/www.google.com

If you prefer not to include a comment to accompany your borrowed / copied photo, link, etc., merely hit the space bar five times, rather than typing '.....' in your related posts' comments section. The resulting post will be Clean. Very Clean. Try it.

I fucked up so many of my posts by not properly closing the tags when I first came here, and now it never happens to me anymore. So embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 542July 23, 2018 5:19 PM
Simply write a capital r, then the number of the post. It's important to: 1. Capitalize the R.

It's been mentioned before but it's useful for the newbies who won't read the whole thread: there was a change at one point and the small "r" now automatically gets capitalized when you put it next to a number.

by Anonymousreply 543July 23, 2018 5:22 PM

Another friendly reminder is that the reply link doesn't get created until AFTER you click "POST".

So, just type R followed by the reply number, no spaces, no brackets. Once you hit "POST" and your comment posts, the system automatically creates the link and the reply link will then appear.

by Anonymousreply 544July 23, 2018 6:17 PM
Once you hit "POST"

NO. You CLICK links/buttons on the screen. You PRESS buttons on the keyboard.
