I watched both Brit Nicolas Fairford and American Preppy Kitchen guy make finger sandwiches for afternoon tea and I must say I prefer American Preppy Kitchen guy's recipes.
Although neither one of them had the good sense to use a serrated knife to cut the crusts off the sandwiches and to cut them in half.

Over/Under and Everything’s Not Fine. The boys are back. We saw the Dropkick Murphys the other night. Overwhelming energy. Incredible show, amazing band, all the good songs. They’re here for the holiday weekend, everybody’s Irish (in spirits, anyway) and we weren’t their oldest fans. Or else there’s some really haggard looking 60-something’s out there.
Felt kinda punk yesterday but figured, “You’re too old for the excesses of show business” and a Guinness or two. Felt like shit last night. Dragged my ass out of bed this morning, got groceries and some Tylenol and figured, WTF, it can’t be THAT but bought two Covid kits because I tossed out the free ones Biden sent.
We’ve both got it. Five fuckin’ years, eight shots, and we’ve finally got Covid. Underwhelming compared to what I’ve heard and read. I’d say it feels like a cold but I haven’t had one, or the flu, for about fifteen years now so not sure how bad it felt before. I still have hope in my heart but we’re walking alone for a while.

Many substitution suggestions end with “or use Oregano.”
Also, the berry has about eight of the little spiky clove pods. It’s supposed to go into a overly-involved soup base that cooks all afternoon, gets refrigerated, has the fat ladled off. All of this is done for something that takes me perhaps fifteen minutes to eat.

The mind boggles as to how people can be so short-sighted and naive about their cities. I thought the same thing about Hawaii after the devastating fires and how people were saying to the tourists that they should leave.
What the hell? Languish in your poverty. If you can afford it, leave for the period of time that tourism is the heaviest.

R83 You’re an idiot, to answer your question. Have you ever been on La Rambla? It looks like Times Square on New Years Eve at 10 am on a weekday. AirBnB “vacation rentals” have increased the local rents by 68%. The people of Barcelona can’t afford to live there so they can’t work there. La Sagrada Familia (the cathedral) requires reservations. There’s such a thing as overtourism and Barcelona, like too many other popular destinations (see Mykonos in the summertime) are overrun to the point where it sucks for the tourists let alone the residents.
Space is finite. There have to be limits on both the day-trippers and the overnight stays or even more popular destinations like Barcelona will be exponentially more unpleasant to visit than they already are now. Even the head taxes (per night per room; per arriving EasyJet and Ryanair passenger; per each and every cruiseship passenger stopping for the day - 3000 pax per ship times 8 ships a day! and double the fee for sailing to or from BCN) won’t stop them and what could the city spend the money on - more ways to accommodate more touristas? Nah.

I put boiled chicken breasts in the food processor and grind them to dust. Then I lightly smear a custard dish with Duke's mayonnaise and dust the mayo with the chicken powder. My cat is usually too dignified to howl about food but she loses all self respect when she sees the Dukes jar. Mind you there is less than a half teaspoon of mayo in the little custard dish but she ends up with chicken dust all over her face and whiskers. After cleaning herself for an hour she takes a long nap.

My mother got German measles in the late 1950s when she was pregnant with what would have been a sibling of mine and she was approved to get a legal abortion. The fetus turned out to have serious deformities. Banning abortion AND discouraging vaccines is fucked up by an order of magnitude.

I added browned tomato paste to a pasta sauce I simmered for two hours. It tastes very good without any Parmesan cheese added.
Growing up, this was the mystery. If my mom pulled out navy beans and cumin, it was chili. If she pulled out oregano and garlic cloves, it was spaghetti.
I think I’m going to use part for spaghetti and then the other part for rolled up lasagna noodles -like pinwheels. I could alternate spinach/cheese - perhaps use two noodles for portion size and effect.

[quote]R24 Watching The Devil Wears Prada again and wondering why Andie told Emily she wouldn’t be going to Paris. Clearly with her injuries she wouldn’t be going
Okay - potentially whelming to discuss - but that plot point of Emily getting mad at Andie personally for filling in overseas is ridiculous… AS IS Miranda later chiding Andie that she had a choice about it.
Yes, Miranda, your employee had the choice to instead get fired, lose her apartment, and go live under a bridge.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | March 28, 2025 7:59 PM |
R24, I believe Andie told her as she was crossing the street which caused her to not pay attention and get hit. Andie went to hospital to see how Emily was doing.
R179, I agree about Miranda. She specifically said to Andie that, if she didn't go, she wasn't serious about working at the magazine OR "anywhere else for that matter." Emily had already told Andie about the assistant that screwed up and was now working at TV Guide or some other less-than-elegant magazine. I wouldn't think I had a snowball's chance in Hell of working at ANY publication if I crossed Miranda.

I condole you, R253. I had it last month for the first time after four years and eight Covid shots. I hope your case is as mild as was mine. I've had worse colds: it lasted five days and by the time I thought to get a Covid test it was pretty much over. I never spent the day in bed, didn't lose my sense of taste or smell and never took anything stronger than Tylenol and Robitussin DM.
I'd been primed to think it would be a lot worse than it was. Hydrate like crazy and feel better soon.

I went to the cruisy part of the Arboretum here in Seattle today because it was so lovely out. The parking lot was full but not with cruisers...mostly people walking or running or taking their dogs for a walk. The ground wasn't too muddy and the air had that fresh springy smell....it was nice being out and getting a bit of exercise.
The 3 other Friends of Dorothy I saw were (older) men around my age. No one seemed particularly interested in the others. We were just enjoying the spring day.
There was one younger fellow (40 instead of 60) tweaker type with baggy pants exposing half his ass but...no. I didn't get particularly near him but could smell him from 12 feet away.

My brother made beef vegetable stew today, a family favorite, and he got FAHNCY with it and added extra spices and it ended up not as good as usual and very underwhelming which was disappointing because I had been looking forward to it.
But, the cornbread was good.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | April 5, 2025 6:54 AM |
R279, FAHNCY stews are to be prepared one to two days in advance.
If I have to locate a spice’s location at the market, I know there’s going to be hours of full refrigeration marrying time before the dish tastes as good as I imagined. FAHNCY spices are seldom used because they require extra babysitting time.
It’s would be whelming for the entire family to descend upon the brother’s tupperware bowl of finished beef vegetable stew, but it would be tasty.

I got a text this morning from the pharmacy saying a prescription was ready. I called to ask “what prescription?” because I hadn’t ordered anything this week. It was a second text about the eyedrops I haven’t picked up. I told them when I ordered them I’d get them this coming Monday when three more refills will be ready.
They sounded really rushed, probably because they’d just opened. Underwhelming for me but apparently overwhelming for them at 9:10 in the morning.

I am engineering interior pockets for shirts. I need supplies that can be washed after each wearing and the medical industrial complex hates me.
The ostomy belts and covers they sell are made of backpack material and hard velcro. The bag itself has a plastic clip that tries to slice off the head of my dick. Each cover/belt costs $50 to hold and hide a bag of shit and they don’t hold up in the wash. The belt slips down because I don’t have a waist. Plus, they look like I should be riding a short bus and wearing corrective shoes..
Instead, I sew a pocket at stoma-height. My shirt now holds everything up and if I make adjustments, it looks like I’m scratching my belly.
I salvaged eight pockets from a busted James Perse sweat shirt. Very comfy, but I need a new cutting victim….the two shirts I like less are too thin; I want to match fabric weights.

Got my monthly pedicure this past Saturday. Not only do they do a fantastic job but they show an Asian soap opera on the 3 big-screen TVs (I think they're at least 42"). They put the English subtitles on for us Americans so we can understand the dialogue. It's quite riveting. Something about feudal lords and their wives and concubines; lots if scheming. I have to admit, it's quite engaging.

I had to travel for work yesterday and today and was going to make a long weekend out of it. My niece usually watches my dog when (infrequently) travel without him. She was unavailable this week so I hired a dog sitter with great references to stay in our house until Sunday. She said everything is going well, except after dinner tonight, he just kept staring at the front door and won’t make eye contact with her. She is upset and can’t get him to interact, he is just staring at the door. I think my dog knows I was at a beach this evening without him. I think I am going to have to go home tomorrow so I don’t have a psychologically broken dog. Kind of whelming, actually. Other than that, I had a delicious dinner of halibut with a basmati rice pilaf and skinny asparagus spears.

I have automatic car wash anxiety.
I can't get out of treating my car with an underbody flush. The road salt can corrode it.
With fear and dread, every move under duress, my hand shifts the transmission so I can inch forward to obey those intimidating green and red lights.
Then I sit there frightened and vulnerable, with only the car walls and windows to separate me from scary moving, wet, machinery accompanied by a thumping whoosh sound.
I think the whole experience should be part of a Halloween Haunted House tour and the sound be played over my garage loudspeaker during Trick or Treat.

I have one about 8 miles away that you have to get out of the car for. I prefer that one, even thouygh I have anxiety that my car won't come out. It's not rational but it is what it is.

My little cat has been screaming at me since the old Siamese died. It's been a few weeks now and it's disconcerting. It must be frustrating for her not to be able to explain what she's yelling about.

My uncle died last year and named his brother, my father, in his will. Made my aunt, his sister, an executor. My father has Alzheimers and I have Power of Attorney.
I'm out of state and don't know what the will says but my aunt tried to talk to my dad (I'm sure hilarity ensued) and was nasty to the social worker.
Don't know the nefarious plans taking place because my aunt, whom I've always been close to, is now acting like a grade A cunt.

I have a hose and wash my car in the driveway. It takes less time than it does to drive to and through and back from the car wash. In the winter it has to go to the drive-through maybe once a month to get the salt off.

It was bizarre that this whale was surviving in the basement with no water to swim in, just gliding around sans water and banging against the door wanting to come upstairs. Also bizarre that I had a basement as I don't have one in real life. The house was my actual house just with an added basement.
I was on a rotary dial, green landline phone calling various places trying to find someone to remove Moby Dick from my basement while wiping sweat from my face with a handkerchief. I was also flipping through a yellow pages phone book looking for whale movers or whatever which was very retro.

Open Yellow Pages books and papers strewn about the console table is very unlike me and made me want to clean up even in my dream.

Basement = subconscious. You have a big happy secret you have been keeping from yourself that wants to come "upstairs" You may learn something about yourself or come to terms with some long held repressed memory very soon. Whale = water animal. Water = emotions. Absence of water = this is part of what you have put in storage so have not emotionally dealt with yet. I bet once the emotional floodgates opens, that whale will be washed upstairs and no longer suppressed! It will be a good thing!

Woke up early (for me) and decided to walk the half block to the coffee shop/bakery for some pastry (which I don't need). Of course it was rather busy, which I expected...it's Saturday and it's the only decent place to grab coffee/pastry in the hood. But, there was this stupid couple taking forever to order and the shop girl, who was a big blonde, was just egging them on and they were all laughing and having a great time meanwhile the line gets longer and longer and soon it's snaking out the door and down the street because the fuckers ordering were stupid selfish twats and the shop girl was a moron. I stomped out.
So, I went to Kroger down the street and bought an overly sweet apple fritter which is killing me.

R484,I was trained to provide very fast, error-free work for busy customers in the MidWest who had other things to do with their days.
When I moved to the PNW, coworkers clued me in that I was brusk. Out here, customers determine the speed and rhythm of the transaction.
It smells like cronyism when you watch your coworker change customer service personality with each transaction, but customers prefer it.

It reached 80 degrees today so I washed the car and took the shop vac to the interior, removing a mild winter’s worth of sand and pebbles, mostly. And got dust out from the seats and surfaces. Then everything washed or wiped down and dried out, the glass and dash and inside and out. I have to learn to think like you, R489.
My husband did the middle color load of wash this afternoon which is now virtuously line drying.

So I added a little more than the half a cup of brandy that was called for in the Lady Baltimore cake filling and it ended up too potent. 🫨
The cake was light and delicious and the frosting was just perfect. Not too sweet.
The carrot cake didn’t suffer from a lack of vanilla extract, so that was a relief.
The brisket was also delicious: tender and flavorful.
The only thing that was somewhat lacking was the potato salad, but at that point of the day I was too tired to care too much. It was still good.

My poutine sucked hairy balls because of the cheese. I’m used to squeeky white cheddar curd and I had to substitute little mozzarella balls and they are not a good substitution.
Speed is important in making a poutine. The bag had tinier bags inside - each containing three mozzarella balls. I lost valuable french fry heat while unwrapping bullshit cheese.

One person (male, 20s, skinny, hair) screamed for the first hour of the day, grabbed two tote bags and ran down stairs. He’s been on the nod/sleeping outside next to the family’s minivan all day.

Not normally something that is in my breakfast rotation. I fished the box of pop tarts out of my "emergency food stash". That's my stash of shelf stable food with long expiration dates for when the end of the world hits or a hurricane or power outage. The expiration date on this box of pop tarts is February 2026.
Now I'm debating if I should just transfer the box to my regular pantry section or put it back in the "emergency" section. I am leaning towards regular pantry.

Sunshine, 75F, and after two tries this morning I finally connected the two hoses in proper sequence and threaded them though all the openings and holes, from the tap on the outside wall to the hose box and then a second hose coiled from the hose box to be used with the nozzle. With which the husband is outside, Miracle Gro-ing the flower and shrubbery beds.

I stupidly left a hammer and screwdriver in the upper level of the cat tree. My cat got up there and decided to take a nap anyway.

I need a new percolator lid and Cuisinart wants 29.50. I’m going to hunt the goodwill before I pay 29.50 for a fucking lid.
For now, I strapped the glass bulb in place with electrical tape. The bulb is important to the coffee making process - I’m just not sure what it does.

I will have no problem finishing my entire container of Tic Tacs before 4pm.

On the flip side of the weather coin, it's only 58 degrees in Seattle right now with grey skies and I LOVE it!
I have the space heater on!
Dreading the 72 degrees it's supposed to be on Thursday...too soon for that much heat.

Shouldn’t see 72 degrees in Seattle until June. August may give us one or two days of 89 degree weather and these folks will lose their minds. It’s still better than the MidWest.

R595 I moved to Seattle from the Midwest to escape the shitty hot in summer/snow in winter shit.
I've gotten very cranky in the last decade because summers here have gotten progressively hotter!
I miss the good ole days when Seattle summers started on July 5th and ended the Thursday before Labor Day weekend.

I went to a spa at a resort and got a massage for $260. It was no better than the Asian massage I usually get. In fact, the Asian massage is better because they massage my head, hands, and feet, and I only pay $60-100.
Live and learn.

I wish baking sheets aka cookie sheets didn't stain so easily.

Next weekend I'm going to the movies but I can't decide whether I want to see The Accountant 2 or Sinners.

There's a Hospital Food subreddit. People from around the world post photos of their hospital food. Some people are in rehab and psych hospitals, I'm surprised they are allowed to have phones.
Some of the food looks good, some looks nasty. The Japanese food looks good as does some of the German food.
