I very much enjoyed tonight's convention once they got through the individual states thing at the beginning.

^^^^ You mean the actual business of the convention?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 21, 2024 4:23 AM |
How can the convention get any higher than tonight? Who else will be speaking? They have two more days.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 21, 2024 4:24 AM |
DL fave Jack Schlossberg was on CNN a few minutes ago and briefly mentioned RFK, Jr.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 21, 2024 4:24 AM |
A lot of people on DL and out there hate Nancy Pelosi.I Don’t.I’m grateful for her efforts and like Michelle Just said ‘’ we are not perfect’’ we’re going to mess up sometimes.(She looked great in yellow yesterday at the convention.)
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 21, 2024 4:24 AM |
The Democrats need to hammer that Division thing hard. That's Trump's imagined strength (Patriots vs. Woke Radical Socialist Antifas) is really his weakness. People are tired of the strife. We want unity, peace and optimism.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 21, 2024 4:24 AM |
I think the Obamas' speeches were purposeful provocation for Trump to go full-on racist. So all of the non-white people who think that MAGA is the way forward in 2024 will see things more clearly.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 21, 2024 4:25 AM |
I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention. What time is Meghan Markle speaking?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 21, 2024 4:27 AM |
More than that, people are tired of the constant negativity. Things really began to turn around when the message changed from "Trump is a threat to democracy" to "Trump is weird." Once we started laughing at him, the boggart began to fade.

I think you may be right r15, and I say that as someone who always hated that Michelle Should Run shit. She doesn't want to run and maybe wouldn't get very far, but she definitely has a knack and showed it tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 21, 2024 4:31 AM |
The dumbest thing I’ve read tonight on the III thread re Pelosi: Most people who make it to Party leadership in the House want to use that position to springboard into the Senate, the Governorship of their state, and a lot of them dream of being Vice and then President.
She WANTED to be Speaker, dumbshit.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 21, 2024 4:32 AM |
WW2 WASN'T WON WITH PEACEFUL SPEECHES.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 21, 2024 4:33 AM |
This was an important moment, if rightly a brief one. But a good line aimed at pick up.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 21, 2024 4:34 AM |
R20, that's not necessary. Relax, you're embarrassing yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 21, 2024 4:34 AM |
I think that was the point r20. SHE wanted to be speaker and made that a goal. It's actually true that a lot of other people are always looking at everything as some magical springboard to other shit, with the eye always on the presidency even if that is an incredibly stupid goal for them to pursue.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 21, 2024 4:34 AM |
Pa lease- ww 2 never happened.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 21, 2024 4:35 AM |
Violent, nasty speeches weren't always effective either r21
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 21, 2024 4:36 AM |
R24 the point is that those seeking House leadership positions do NOT in fact want to go to the Senste or the White House…which is why they never make it there. They seek House leadership because that is what they want. Other than Gephardt, name someone in House leadership who tried to run for President and got anywhere. That path, by design, excludes other roles. Do you think Jeffries secretly wantrd to be a senator or President—no.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 21, 2024 4:39 AM |
Seems to me Michelle kicked ass and Barack did the "when they go low, we go high!" thing
Well, I believe we kick their asses hard, then grab them by the balls and squeeze till they bleed. Because, as Chuck Colson said, "when you have them by the balls....their hearts and minds will follow..."
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 21, 2024 4:40 AM |
Trump is so damn lucky Michelle isn’t running. He is still losing, but it would have been a bloodbath.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 21, 2024 4:46 AM |
The only President in the last 100 years or more who rose from House or Senate leadership was LBJ. It is a separate path, not a stepping stone.

Wed:
Tonight’s headline speakers will be former U.S. President Bill Clinton and vice presidential nominee Tim Walz. Other speakers of note will include U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. They will be joined by one Republican: former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan.

Obama's mockery of Trump in 2012 drove him to seek the presidency in revenge. The mockery last night will probably incite Trump yet again, but he seems fairly out of steam now.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 21, 2024 11:50 AM |
Between Hillary, Barack and Michelle (so far) - all gave hard-hitting, historic speeches. I can't choose which one I liked best, since they were all top-notch. Now, let's hope voters - especially the 'traditional' conservatives, the Haley voters and the 'undecided' - listen to them, over and over again until election day.

[quote] Obama's mockery of Trump in 2012 drove him to seek the presidency in revenge. The mockery last night will probably incite Trump yet again, but he seems fairly out of steam now.
I agree Obama contributed to it, but for decades before 2012, he was telling both Howard Stern and Don Imus that he's asked all the time about running for office and that's something perhaps for the future.
His ego had been conditioning Trump for a long time to want, not some lower office, where he would have to actually work his way up, but that he was going right to the presidency.
I still haven't made-up my mind whether he thought he was going to lose or win against Hillary. I think it's telling that he declared himself a Republican, even though he supported abortion rights and contributed his money to both Dems and Repugs.
To the great discredit of Republicans, the Old Con Man Trump knew easy marks when he saw them and ran as a Republican.
He knew Democrats knew him for the POS he is and wouldn't fall for his nonsense.

The person who doesn't like Pelosi now needs to get a grip. We've gone for almost certainly losing the White House, the Senate and the House to Trump and Project 2025. Now, the WH and the House are ours for the taking. We have a real chance in November. That is Pelosi. AOC, Jeffries, Schumer - nobody else could get Biden out just as nobody else could have outmanoeuvred Trump saving the ACA, saving is a trillion dollars on a wall, saving our democracy by pushing forwarding with the proceeding on Jan 6.
I hope she gets a Clinton level applause tonight. You don't have to like her personally but you have to respect what she done for Dems and the country.
Also - she still, at 84, looks girlish! Those big daughters beside her look older and frumpier than she does.

I predict Trump will lose and will be dead within 6 months. He will never be able to accept that he lost to a Black woman, and it will kill him — and the world will be a better place for it.

After they concluded the roll call and cut to Milwaukee in the very same venue that the Republicans used for their convention and could hardly fill, let alone express the same level of excitement and enthusiasm, you can imagine the ketchup-covered walls at MAGA-Lardo begging for reprieve. I feel bad for the poor undocumented cleaning ladies who have to scrub the red puddles of hardened condiments off the walls pretending it's normal.

Obama oozes masculinity. He has presence, swagger, charisma and natural power.
Yet, he married a woman who is his equal in intellect and ability. He doesn't brandish weapons. He doesn't screw pornstars. He doesn't have a guady gold plated home. He doesn't put lifts in his shoes. He is not roided out. He doesn't walk out to It's a Man's World. He doesn't insult any group of people.
IT MUST KILL MAGA MEN. I bet their dicks wilt when they see him.

We'll never really know what all went on behind the scenes so I will offer my own take on this and it comes from a person (myself) who was working in government and politics for decades: My anxiety and major concern when the media was bullying Joe Biden relentlessly, and key elected officials were calling publicly for him to resign was the lateness of the hour, so to speak. My past experience informed my anxieties. I know the architecture of a campaign and how much work and time and effort is needed to mount a national campaign and without the time, the money and the staffing, you cannot even dream of winning. I was majorly concerned with a brokered convention. With a messy fractured process where four or five or three people ran for POTUS and there was too much mess. Joe's endorsement of Kamala, timed to follow his own surprise announcement was critical to not making a mess...if it worked. There were people out here who were ready to turn their backs on Kamala and open the process to more potential candidates. That would have been fatal. Turning their backs on the VP especially a woman of color would have broken the Democratic coalition irreparably. The fact that Kamala "inherited" the apparatus the staffing and structure and field offices, and that she was raising money at an historic pace was nothing short of miraculous. So I am sure that people like Pelosi, the Obamas, and Joe Biden himself, were working hard, as were other party leaders to make it happen. I say all of this to say that the reason we are on this trajectory right now is because none of the bad things that usually happen with Democrats, happened. And maybe we ought to credit Trump himself for helping make the transition from Joe to KAmala so smooth. Be cause 99% of the Democratic Party was united in their hatred and disgust with Donald Trump.

[quote] Couldn't help but notice how Tim Walz in Milwaukee last night was upping his wardrobe just a little bit with a more tailored blue suit (lovely tapered trousers) and brown shoes.
I noticed that as well. My hot takes:
1) It's only been a month since he started this. It actually took some time for them to arrange for purchase let alone time to execute tailoring
2) As much as the populist messaging is the main selling point, they still have to sell him as presentable on the world stage and ready to assume leadership on Day One should that unfortunately become necessary.

On thing I think Dems missed a golden opportunity was to save Tammy Duckworth to talk about Trump's disrespect for veterans. Of course, she has spoken about it before, but, considering his recent incendiary remarks, she would have been a perfect antidote, one of those "suckers" who didn't act on what she could get out of it. Seeing her walking away from the podium with two prosthetic legs spoke all that America needs to know about sacrifice.

I fucking hate this argument, which is incidentally also used to cast straight actors in gay roles. It's always, without exception, used by the established elites to uphold the status quo. It has nothing to do with "the best person for the job". Or do you think that up to this point in 250 years of the US, there has never been a single woman good enough to be president? Utter nonsense, but of course the people screaming "idpol!" and "DEI!" are not known to be the brightest thinkers.

I once worked on a campaign for a woman running for Mayor. She had nothing in the way of a campaign wardrobe and one of her donors took her shopping to get her three or four outfits she could mix and match. Nothing elaborate. I suspect that the Walz household doesn't have the budget for the kind of wardrobe this kind of endeavor legitimately demands. Getting Gwen and Tim ready for their close up was important.

Walz had a great introduction to the American Public Sphere, the roll out. I loved his "authentic" vibe, and all his bio details were appealing. Refreshing. "Mind you're own damn business" energy.
But in the last couple appearances he's seemed a little too goofy... not the jazz hands, I mean look how Trump's hands are waving and moving relentlessly whenever his mouth opens. But he's seemed too googly-eye sycophantic to Harris. Also looking at her for approval, like a nervous dog. Not completely wearing thin, but he needs to modify and augment his presentation. I hope tonight I see a new and improved Walz...still the regular Dad, Coach, a middle class grounded guy you could trust... but with a bit more gravitas -- we want to see someone who can be President if something horrible happens.
But if "adding gravitas without making him a yawn-provoking politician" is the Dems biggest problem, we are good to go. "Normal" vs "extremist"....LBJ won 62% of the vote with that strategy, and this convention so far has checked every box so far make this contrast.

I kind of agree with you, R128. It was cute and appropriate at first for him to be that deferential to Kamala, since she is SO much more experienced on the national stage and really kind of plucked him from (relative) obscurity. Now he needs to stand up and make a name for himself. He's a funny guy and I think we all loved him for that in his first speeches, but we need to see him as the dignified and capable man I'm sure he is and can be.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | August 21, 2024 5:49 PM |
Oh please, you Marys. Tim Walz is just fine, it's the convention with a party atmosphere. He's allowed to be a little goofy. There will be plenty of time for gravitas later, like when Coach Walz kicks the ass of the couch fucker in their debate

First thing Nancy will speak about is President Biden, his accomplishments, and his "putting country before personal ambition."
One aspect of the Obamas' speeches both, that still bothers me given how lauded they've been, is the implication that Trump is the Incumbent, that we must forge a future way different from today.
Except "TODAY" includes 4 years of BIDEN!
Kamala tomorrow should stress not only (if at all) some impossible 1950s throwback (IRONY ALERT!) where "one income paid all the bills" (I mean, WTH? This Baby Boomer's mother worked retail even then, vwhile my old man was White Collar Bethlehem Steel); but also THE CONTINUING, BUILDING UPON, and ADDING TO the Biden Legacy!
Joe got OLD; he didn't become some retroactive FAILURE. He still has millions of fans.
A relay team passes the torch each one to one, but they all stand together on the victory podium.

[quote]So is there bad blood between the Obamas and Bidens? I believe so.
There is some bad blood between Michelle O and the Bidens. MO became firm friends with Hunter's ex-wife, Kathleen, when she was in the WH. She was upset and dismayed at how not only Hunter, but the rest of the Biden family treated her when he divorced her, then started up an affair with Beau's widow. She sided with Kathleen and hasn't been close to Joe or Jill since.

Fonda has all but said that Dolly is a Dem who wont be open about politics or about her specific religious beliefs because she doesn’t want to alienate her fans. Fonda said that she could feel Dolly freeze onstage when Fonda and Tomlin made a Trump remark but the way she worded it, it was pretty clear that Dolly agreed off camera.
She also turned down the medal of freedom from Trump - twice.
It would be pretty epic if she did show up at the DNC or the inauguration.

One thing more I'd like to add to my comments about Barack, Joe, HRC, and 2016: There have been DL replies, and even published articles, claiming that Joe Biden was mourning his son's recent death and therefore was in no condition to campaign; hence, Hillary.
To which I say: Poppycock and balderdash! AS IF Joe could not, a half-year or more later, subsumed his grief into "Winning for Beau." Olympic athletes have participated after family deaths; talent-show competitors have continued after family deaths. "Win One For The Gipper!" is ingrained in Americanism.
Think about the Alternative History that might have been: Obama 2008-2016. Biden 2016-2024; Harris....
The way Biden would have dealt with Covid. His SCOTUS choices AND their subsequent rulings FOR GENERATIONS. His shoring up and maybe expanding NATO.
But, you might say, there was no guarantee Biden would have defeated Trump in 2016. True enough. But there is more evidence that he could have than there is otherwise---because Joe remains, so far, the only person to have done so.
Will THIS Democratic woman be the second Trump vanquisher? 🙏

R212 If only. But I’m not as positive about Biden’s 2016 chances. I think Trump’s shtick would have worked just as well and maybe even better against Biden. I can see a greater number of white women and younger people deciding to give Trump a chance. “Maybe he will drain the “swamp” and surely he’ll get serious and stop the blustering insults once in office.” It would have been easier to lay the Obama years right at his feet and as a 40 year pol, the stain of the swamp would have been on him. Between 2 old white guys I think more people would have taken a gamble on the flashy new tv guy.

For a female Presidential nominee, they should have chosen New Jersey's other famous singer - Whitney Houston. Should have chosen "The Star Spangled Banner" or "Queen of the Night".
And again, how could they miss a great moment with MA and not choose 'She Works Hard for the Money' from Donna Summer ? Or her lesser known songs, "Livin' In America" (1982) or 'Let There Be Peace' (1991).

Governor of Georgia... the fantasy coach at sleepaway camp who I wanted to see naked in the shower, but only got to see in his tight gym shorts with pec-stretching white tee until everyone went swimming and then I got to stare at his broad shoulders and chest, marvel at the size of oak tree like legs and bulged swimsuit.
S-w-o-o-n, baby.

One of the great things about the Harris/Walz ticket raising $500 million over the past month, R259, is that they can actually afford to show commercials like that in prime time on the major networks.

Bill’s going on too long but he is intimate, folksy, warm, he knows what he’s doing. That was always the natural skill and instinct he had.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | August 22, 2024 1:45 AM |
That’s a good point. I hope people heard it. These people feel bound to dominate (by their religious BS) and they’ll use any means to get there (using the orange freak). That gets lost I think, the lunatics behind the loon.

Actually, he said 'in four generations', not forty years. Since a generation is usually considered a 20 year span, he's talking 80 years.

Nancy will be the next Carter. She looks and sounds better than Trump, Biden and Clinton combined. She doesn’t even squint that teleprompter. Good Italian genes.
Pity she didn’t get one “morbidly obese as they say” level zinger into her speech but she doesn’t need any more headlines at the moment.

What R407 said! This DNC in particular is really showing how much we’re at a major point of inter- generational, cultural, -social, and -identification change. I think Kamala has half an advantage already just by virtue of making Trump in comparison look, act and sound more and more exactly like the worst in American society and politics that Americans want to vote out.

Word is that Clinton ready-wrote his speech from last night's version.
One State of the Union Address his teleprompter immediately failed. Bill gave the entire speech without.

by Anonymous | reply 577 | August 22, 2024 2:40 AM |
She's going too long. She's not all that anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 578 | August 22, 2024 2:40 AM |
They should have saved Michelle. She was the best speaker by far.
by Anonymous | reply 579 | August 22, 2024 2:40 AM |
R577, I'm seeing some jowls, though.
by Anonymous | reply 580 | August 22, 2024 2:40 AM |
I could see her asking Kamala to consider her for an overseas ambassadorship somewhere where L’Oprah feels she could be of help to those thought to be the most in need: in France, or Monaco, for instance.
by Anonymous | reply 581 | August 22, 2024 2:40 AM |
She's doing well, but I feel like we're eating up a lot of Pete time.
by Anonymous | reply 582 | August 22, 2024 2:41 AM |
Why is she still talking?
by Anonymous | reply 583 | August 22, 2024 2:41 AM |
R569 here I have a thread with this title prepared but now I don't know if I should hit post with the other threads started
by Anonymous | reply 584 | August 22, 2024 2:41 AM |
Surprisingly effective speech from Oprah; she actually sounds genuine.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | August 22, 2024 2:42 AM |
Just use the Part IV thread, R584.
We're already there.
by Anonymous | reply 586 | August 22, 2024 2:42 AM |
Trust your gut, R584.
by Anonymous | reply 587 | August 22, 2024 2:42 AM |
R584: DONT. La Mointrice WILL spank you for it
by Anonymous | reply 588 | August 22, 2024 2:42 AM |
Oprah is an Independent. I thought she was Dem.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | August 22, 2024 2:43 AM |
R585: I'll take your word for it.
by Anonymous | reply 591 | August 22, 2024 2:43 AM |
Summon the Independents O!
by Anonymous | reply 592 | August 22, 2024 2:43 AM |
But mostly me.
by Anonymous | reply 593 | August 22, 2024 2:43 AM |
Independent women for Kamala!
by Anonymous | reply 594 | August 22, 2024 2:43 AM |
Of course she'd Independent. She foisted fatass Phil McGraw and quack Ozmet on us. She believes in manifesting your troubles away and success to you. She's kind of nuts.
by Anonymous | reply 595 | August 22, 2024 2:44 AM |
She's going on for far too long.
by Anonymous | reply 596 | August 22, 2024 2:44 AM |
God, I really, REALLY hate Oprah Winfrey.
Why is she allowed to go on so long?
by Anonymous | reply 597 | August 22, 2024 2:44 AM |
Well the “back” litany was damned effective.
by Anonymous | reply 598 | August 22, 2024 2:45 AM |
So which link for the next thread should we follow??
by Anonymous | reply 599 | August 22, 2024 2:45 AM |
[quote] and if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady...
*cut to weirdly aware, awkward, slightly overweight woman looking back to make sure that Oprah isn't talking about her*
Thank goodness she looked back and missed her face on the Jumbotron!
by Anonymous | reply 600 | August 22, 2024 2:45 AM |
I like Oprah's speech.
by Anonymous | reply 601 | August 22, 2024 2:45 AM |
WE WONT GO BACK !!!!!
I need a sign for my house that says that.
by Anonymous | reply 602 | August 22, 2024 2:45 AM |
Remember when this bitch said a couple of days after the 2016 election, "It's going to be OK! Breathe! Seeing Obama welcome Trump to the White House put my mind at ease. Everything will be fine!"
Yeah, it wasn't fine.
by Anonymous | reply 603 | August 22, 2024 2:45 AM |
Shut up, Oprah.
by Anonymous | reply 604 | August 22, 2024 2:45 AM |
She's still on? Too bad the injections can't shrink these idiots'egos along with their waistlines.
by Anonymous | reply 605 | August 22, 2024 2:46 AM |
Blech
by Anonymous | reply 606 | August 22, 2024 2:46 AM |
I thought she was going to start giving away cars!
by Anonymous | reply 607 | August 22, 2024 2:46 AM |
Did they swap out Pete for Oprah?
by Anonymous | reply 608 | August 22, 2024 2:47 AM |
I’m cracking up at her imperious tone. Who the fuck does she think she is. She’s not even a Democrat!
The Republicans who were there showed real courage and decency.
Oprah is just showing off.
OMG I expected her to go And YOU get joy, and YOU get joy, and YOU get joy…
She was simply insufferable.
by Anonymous | reply 609 | August 22, 2024 2:47 AM |
Shapiro's speech was a bit lame.
by Anonymous | reply 610 | August 22, 2024 4:32 AM |
I'm thinking he got passed over as VP so as not to give free publicity to Ben Shaprio, with whom he unfortunately shares a name.
