Yeah, OP, there's beady eyes, squint, and an actual epicanthic fold, three different things. To your credit you admit your confusion. That can help others. Phenotype does not equal genotype (looks can be deceiving).

It's not unusual for people of Ashkenazi ancestry (like JGL) to be mistaken for partially Asian. James Franco has the quint, too. So do two of my Ashkenazi siblings. Jewish comics, like Sarah Silverman, sometimes incorporate jokes about this into their acts.

Phoebe Cates is Ashkenazi on her dad's side and, as others have noted, Asian on her mom's.

No known Sephardic ancestry, but ancestry spit tests showed we're minutely (under 1%) Mongolian. Which goes back to one of Silverman's jokes, which she once made an entire TV episode about.

There is a tendency a certain combination of eyes and cheekbone shape to Asian ancestry, whether the person has Jewish/African/Arctic/Native American/Whatever heritage.

Of course, there are now facelifts which make women ( and some men) look Asian.
