If it ever got adapted, it would fill the niche of something like Shadow & Bone, just with more queer characters at the forefront.

R56 I enjoy Episode 7's big moments for Nick and Charlie respectively, but do think the writing could have been better at bridging the two. Objectively, it's pretty overwhelming that they each have these cathartic speeches on the same day. The scene outside between Nick and Charlie is adorable, but I was surprised it didn't include any dialogue like Nick asking if Charlie needed to take a breather after the Ben encounter. It likely would have been another moment of Charlie putting himself aside to focus on Nick facing his dad and brother, but would have been extra set-up for the finale.

I think the show is overall pretty good at adapting the comics to suit the show's timeline, but I understand why others have mentioned the dinner scene having some odd moments after being moved from Volume 4. It's nothing immersion-breaking, but it's true that in the comics, David calls Charlie a drama queen because of his mental illness and hospitalization. That context is missing in the show, and you kind of have to assume it's generic homophobia instead of a gross helping of ableism. So I agree that Episode 8 has better writing, even if the acting is always great. I get why Joe highlighted the dinner drama as a favourite.

Episode 8 moment was better, though Episode 7 had a conclusion that episode 8 conversation didn't have. The dinner scene was basically the final climax of all of Nick's coming out. Plus nothing some people (alice included) love more than homophobia storylines.

Most reviewers that I read weren't fans of Ben's and just wanted him to go away, so not too surprised it's not really viewed as a stand out. Don't think the character was viewed as something Charlie needed to overcome, but just someone who had overstayed his welcome.

It absolutely is because of Olivia. Not saying that to be shady to Kit before anyone starts. Literally any contender for best episode imo is best in large part because of a scene or several he is excellent it in. And actually episode 8, which is being proposed as best episode, centers more around nick than Charlie. His final coming out, his chat with Tao, and his huge emotional response to Charlie’s reveal. The end of the episode has joe smiling and Kit looking conflicted and so sad for Charlie, and he is amazing in it. So it’s not like it’s Kit antis proposing an episode he’s overlooked in. But the fact that Olivia is named for one of maybe 5 lines she says in episode 7 is pretty clear. Next season I would guess the love won’t cure a mental illness episode will be the one to make it, and that that specific scene will be named again because Olivia is in it. I get it from vogues perspective. Why not drop the Oscar winner name when you can? But that is why I think.

Minor quibble but it really does annoy me, and I actually don’t blame Alice for this, that critics and reviewers including this vogue writer always call nicks dad homophobic. He’s not. As I said above, one of the few interesting things she does is delve into parents who are shitty for reasons other than homophobia. I think especially because as a gay guy, there’s an interesting element to it that the trauma they cause is due to ignorance of their queer kids rather than homophobia. Mental illness is way higher among LGBT people, and Charlie’s bullying, outing, and the Ben experience play a huge role in his self worth and self harming behaviors, and while Jane isn’t a homophobe she’s ignorant and dismissive of that. Nicks father is so absent he has no idea how he’ll react to him dating a boy, and while he’s not homophobic, the anxiety and worry nick feels about coming out is in large part because Nick has no close bond with him that allows him to feel more confident or joyful about coming out to him. In the show, as soon as David is a dick, Stephane shuts him down (again, wrongly as he never parented David) and clesrly has no issue with Charlie, so not sure where these people get the homophobic dad plot point from. The point that he can be accepting and still a bad da is actually more interesting to me.

His main point of interest is rugby, and he constantly brings up how rugby is very attractive to women. Or that rugby won David lots of girlfriends. Rugby is ironically one of the things that brought Nick and Charlie together, and it's almost like David brings that up to provoke his dad into finding out that Nick has sullied this extremely sacred heterosexual and masculine thing.

I basically see David and Nick as taking two separate paths with their dad. David felt gratified by the rugby connection (and getting girlfriends, obviously) while Nick obviously felt a bit alienated by it and wished his dad cared about other things about Nick. And Nick took more after his mother, partly due to being younger when his parents divorced and having less time with his father. Regardless, his dad's problem is neglect more than homophobia.

I'm curious to see what S3 does with Stephane, actually. He doesn't show up to Nick's birthday in the comics, but Nick's birthday comes before the big dinner/coming out scene. Since the big dinner/coming out scene happened in S2, you'd think he'd show up to Nick's birthday in S3 to prove that he's trying to be better. If they for some reason couldn't get his actor back, maybe throw in a line about his dad being better at texting or the two of them having a phone call.

Beyond that, I genuinely find it hard to believe those two would stay together once Elle heads off to uni. Breaking them up would be more realistic for sure, Alice overcorrected by putting them back together at the end of Nick + Charlie. I honestly think she did a lot of overcorrecting in her novella edits, but that's another discussion.

His more dramatic scenes with Nick and Charlie were also great. But the stuff will Elle wasn't really good, especially the date and the aftermath. She was really mean to him and they communicate like shit even after they get together. Their chemistry is also pretty middling. It's hard for me to want to see much more of them together. I'd honestly rather Tara and Darcy be given more screen time.

I also don’t think critiques of her acting are overall in bad faith. She’s never had real training, and has only had HS and DW as acting experience aside from her short film. Joe is, without exaggeration, a huge natural talent to be as incredible as he is with similar experience, can’t easily compare to Yaz. Yaz isn’t any more wooden than a fair few more successful and experienced actors. With some lessons and more experience she could be quite good.

In all seriousness I think it’s not a coincidence that the three actors who improved most significantly between S1 and S2 (Joe, Will, and kizzy; again, Joe from an excellent starting point) are three who’ve expressed genuine huge eagerness to learn. Will and Joe have both mentioned kit guiding or teaching them S1, which is really sweet of kit but also shows how eager they were to learn screen acting. Joes mentioned the same about the agatha women a lot. Kizzy said he’s getting lessons. That humility but also genuine love for acting that makes them want to improve on top of innate talent us the reason they were all insanely good in s2. And Fraulein, much as it upsets you, the reason Joe was as good as Kit. Hardly an insult to kit to say joes as good as him. I think they’re both exceptional
