The Israelis I've spoken to are not teeming with blood lust. They're devastated, particularly because they were in sympathy with the peace movement and hated Netanyahu. They would like time to mourn. Hamas could give it to them by releasing the hostages. It would also help Hamas in the court of public opinion, which now sees them as ISIS II.
I think the pro-Palestinian lobby that has indoctrinated so many students and progressives is chagrinned to see its narrative falling apart. '

I don’t know how fucking stupid you could be to draw comparisons between the treatment of the Jewish people by the Nazis pre holocaust, and the current situation in Israel, when the entire irony of the situation is that they have been treating the Palestinians for the last 20 years just like they were treated by the Nazis in Germany in the lead up to the holocaust.

Do you honestly think that would end this? I really, really don't. People revert to chimpanzees in this situation, and start looking for faces to rip off. Joy Reid finally succumbed and had the mother of a killed Israeli teen on. She let the woman, who was obviously devastated, run on for 10 minutes and make factual political misstatements that Joy can correct with future pro-Palestinian guests. The woman said that NYU had supported Hamas when it was that idiot law student and that the billions given to Gaza could have made it a paradise. Cue Ayman Mohyeldin with corrections and propaganda for her next show.
Every single host today interviewed an Israeli who lost a relative. Joy's is the first one that went off the rails and I assume it was deliberate. She just let her ramble on.

Lots of people suffer serious oppression (actual slavery, actual apartheid, actual genocide) and manage to not engage in a well coordinated, sophisticated reign of terror and carnage killing hundreds of civilians including the elderly, disabled and babies while taking hostages and filming it.
I don’t mean to belittle the real suffering of the Palestinians, but making excuses for Hamas because history and oppression is like saying Jeffrey Dahmer had a legitimate cause for his behavior because he had a crappy childhood. There’s nuance and then there’s stupidity.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 10, 2023 11:52 PM |
Exactly, Elderberry. The Palestinians are all complicit in these atrocities.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 10, 2023 11:54 PM |
I agree ElderLez. There are times when complete submission is really the only reasonable choice, as many Native American tribes decided. They were right. Apaches and Navajo and Hopi constantly blowing shit up and suffering misery and death in consequence was a choice they decided eventually to abandon. Nothing is fair about that, but it's just a fact of life.
But that said, I don't think everyone is making excuses for Hamas or the Palestinians for not accepting that. It is an acceptance that sometimes that is not the choice that people will make. And that does lead to misery and suffering, but sometimes that is just the way it is.
I do think Hamas will now be wiped out, because of the big choice they made.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 10, 2023 11:57 PM |
No R37 the Palestinians are not all complicit. That’s nonsense. Some are some aren’t. Hamas is using the suffering of the Palestinian people as cover for their evil in much the same way they put their military installations under schools and hospitals.

Funny you mentioned Jeffrey Dahmer. I just was just talking to my mom about the situation. I said that this reminds me of a bunch of Jeffrey Dahmers running around butchering people. It is the first thing that came to me after reading about the atrocities. I just don't get how anyone, let a whole group, can butcher infants and children like that. No matter how much you hate someone, and perhaps with good reason, how do you look at a helpless child and slit his throat. Don't care what the history is, or what you've seen or been through, this is unforgivable. No "both sides".

I assume they won't. I assume that while some of them might be desperately trying to get to Iran, most of them will fail in that effort and die in Gaza. And I assume most of them knew that going in. That is what is crazy. I don't think every Hamas leader has a magic carpet and a way out. They probably did this knowing it would end in a truly crazy bloody way. As the 9/11 hijackers did. What to do with that? I don't know. But Israel is right to try to wipe out Hamas, even though I totally believe they helped create it decades ago, including Netanyahu personally.

It is obscenely ignorant to compare the Palestinians’ treatment to the “pre-Holocaust” treatment of Jews by Germans. If Auschwitz or other death camps had never been built, one out of six European Jews would still have been kiilled in pogroms and attacks.
Two out of every three European Jews were killed by the war’s end. Palestinian deaths are tragic, but nowhere near that, and with none of the intentionality Germans showed by using infants for target practice, shooting the sick in hospitals, or killing every person in a village.
What the informed like r12 may be referring to are the ghettos where Germans forced Jews. Gaza endures terrible conditions, but it is nothing like the Polish or other ghettos. The Warsaw ghetto crammed half a million people into 1.5 square miles. Gaza is two million people, with about 15,000 a square mile.
The simplistic analysis like r12 is an embarrassment. One can object to Palestinian conditions without drawing inappropriate analogies. The Germans’ monstrosity really doesn’t have a parallel, even when there were more casualties.

I mean Israel's options right now are send 400,000 men into a densely populated urban area where Hamas have had years to dig in and have local knowledge and support which is going to be comparable the Battle of Stalingrad for them in casualty rate and result in thousands of Palestinian collateral deaths over a lengthy period of time. Ryna Workman also accused the Jewish state of “genocide” in the missive — which caused so much outrage a law firm rescinded a cushy job offer to the student.
“I want to express, first and foremost, my unwavering and absolute solidarity with Palestinians in their resistance against oppression towards liberation and self-determination,” wrote Workman, who identifies as non-binary.
“Israel bears full responsibility for this tremendous loss of life. This regime of state-sanctioned violence created the conditions that made resistance necessary,” their post continued.
“I will not condemn Palestinian resistance,” they went on to write, instead condemning the “violence of… apartheid, military occupation, the United States military industrial complex and obfuscating genocide as a ‘complex issue,'” among other things.
-------------------
The university released a statement saying the message did not reflect its views.
“Acts of terrorism are immoral. The indiscriminate killing of civilians and hostage-taking, including children and the elderly, is reprehensible. Blaming victims of terrorism for their own deaths is wrong,” spokesman John Beckman said.
𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰. 𝐈𝐧 𝐚 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐗 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 “𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥(𝐉𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡) 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.”
The NYU newsletter was just the latest instance of student leaders and organizations nationwide that have thrown their support behind Hamas terrorists’ weekend massacre which killed more than one thousand Israelis, according to the nation’s US embassy.
The group Students for Justice in Palestine is calling on all its chapters to join a “mass mobilization’’ on Thursday to mark the “historic win for Palestinian Resistance.’’
A poster promoting the event at California State University’s La Fuerza Student Association featuring a paraglider, which were used by insurgents to launch their horrific surprise terror attacks on residential areas and kibbutzs, where they fired on civilians at random.
“We will be rallying and marching in support of the Palestinian liberation and against Zionist occupation in Palestine,” the group said.
The SPJ groups at Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Butler University, University of Louisville, University of Binghamton and the University of Virginia were planning on participating in the event, with off-campus events planned at Michigan State University and University of Mary Washington, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
At Harvard University, more than 30 student groups said they held Israel “entirely responsible” for the attacks carried out by Hamas, which is recognized as a terror group by the US and other western powers for its murders and kidnappings.
Former Harvard president Larry Summers, who served as Treasury Secretary in the Clinton administration, said he had never been more “disillusioned and alienated” from the university.
“The silence from Harvard’s leadership, so far, coupled with a vocal and widely reported student groups’ statement blaming Israel solely, has allowed Harvard to appear at best neutral towards acts of terror against the Jewish state of Israel,” Summers wrote on X.
“Instead, Harvard is being defined by the morally unconscionable statement apparently coming from two dozen student groups blaming all the violence on Israel.”
President Claudine Gay later issued a statement condemning “the terrorist atrocities perpetrated by Hamas,” and added that the student groups do not speak for the university.

Oct 10: Urgent Advisory from the Israeli Government:
Within the next few hours, Hamas terrorists are expected to disseminate photos and videos of hostages and acts of torture across social media platforms. The Government of Israel urgently requests the following actions be taken.
1. Do not engage in sharing these images or videos under any circumstances. Doing so contributes to psychological warfare against both the State of Israel and its citizens.
2. Shield minors from exposure to this disturbing content. The images and videos are highly graphic and could induce significant emotional distress. Your cooperation in adhering to these directives is critically important.

I was reading up about Gaza today and it's 138 square miles in size. [bold]46% of the 2.1 million residents are 14 years old and under[/bold]. All of this is fucking awful. If they could just let the children out to Egypt then whatever else happens - at least the children weren't slaughtered. Children don't have choices because they're children. They have no blame in this. Arab countries can take them. Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia etc.

People can rightly talk about bad the odds are for any of the possible actions against the cancer, but just lying down and letting the cancer consume you is not an option in this case. Israel has to take some steps to eradicate the cancer no matter how long the odds. The Israel-Palestine conflict has been ongoing since 1948, when the State of Israel was founded and 700,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes. (Its roots go back far further.) The central underlying issue is not actually very complicated: Israel was established as a Jewish state in a land with a large indigenous Arab population. That population has always been inconvenient for the project of building an ethno-nationalist state. Granting the Palestinians full rights as citizens of a democratic Israel would prevent Israel from being a “Jewish” state. The sensible solution for Israel would be to grant Palestinians their own state, but Israel holds the cards, since it has Palestine under occupation (in the West Bank) and blockade (in Gaza). Rather than give Palestinians sovereignty in what remains of their historic territory, Israel has chosen to maintain its control and grant Palestinians only limited freedoms, creating an apartheid state, the miseries of which are well-documented. The realistic possibilities for a Palestinian state have steadily been diminishing, first because Israel sees no reason to change its position, and second because Israeli “settlers” keep seizing bits of Palestinian territory, to the point where maps of the Palestinian West Bank now look like a Swiss cheese.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s far right government has made it clear that its position is that Palestinian sovereignty is simply off the table. Netanyahu openly declared a policy of annexing the West Bank to Israel. He vowed to “crush” Palestinian statehood aspirations and swore that they would never have self-governance so long as he was in power, meaning that the apartheid status quo would be maintained and extended. As Palestinians looked toward the future, it’s clear that they could see little except steady further encroachment on what little self-determination they had left. The Netanyahu vision for Palestine is to keep it as essentially a prison within Israel, under full Israeli control.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | October 11, 2023 3:54 PM |
The responsibility of the international community is clear: we have to push for a final negotiated end to the conflict, through the end of Israel’s apartheid and the granting of full rights of self-determination to Palestine. Ultimately, as Chomsky and Cassif point out, the subjugation of Palestine is not in the interests of ordinary Israelis, who themselves deserve to live in peace. It guarantees Israel’s perpetual insecurity. So long as there are Palestinians, there will be resistance, some of which will be violent, and it will become more violent when other avenues for expressing dissent are closed off. To predict what will happen is in no way to justify it, and while we can and should condemn Hamas’ counterproductive and hideous atrocities, we need to understand why they occurred and how to prevent more from happening in the future. One way, favored by some, is to simply “destroy everything”—there is peace, by definition, if everyone is dead. But if we care about trying to avert the worst disaster, then we have to think rationally and carefully about what is actually likely to end the conflict. Eliminating the source of Palestinian grievances by granting them their basic rights under international law is the best way to minimize the likelihood of future violence. The job of the U.S. is not to “support Israel” by aiding Israel’s vengeance, but by facilitating a just settlement. That involves pressuring Israel to end the occupation that serves as Hamas’ greatest recruitment tool.

The reason that there will never be peace there is the religion. I don’t think the average DLer who has never met a Palestinian can understand the degree to which religion rules their lives. R185 International intervention in imposing arbitrary boundaries and creating nation states, including Israel, is what led to a lot of the present conflicts. However, I agree with R189. If Israel is not backed by international powers, their neighboring countries will not allow them to exist. The problem is more complicated than just “creating” an independent Palestinian state.

I used to live in a British city with a large muslim community mainly from 2 different countries. They hated each other because it was different strands of Islam. Several joined Islamic State and were killed in action.
They turned their part of the city into a sex segregated are where you would only see women out and about if they we’re doing the shopping. Girls were never seen out playing and were at risk from FGM.
Politicians courted them because there was a huge vote.
When I see Israelis called colonisers for building a nation in the desert I think of those communities and question if they have colonised parts of Europe.

R184, Arabs aren't indigenous to what is now Israel, and Arabs are not even indigenous tp north Africa. They are there because of the Islamic Conquest, in the process destroying advanced cultures. What is now Israel was quite unpopulated, Twain commented on this writing on his visit there, and pretty much in ruins. There has always been a Jewish population there, but they started emigrating in substantial numbers, bought land, and really began to develop the country in the 1850s.
Here is a very interesting, scholarly book about the Islamic Conquest in the region.

"One journalist from the Tel Aviv-based news channel i24 said a soldier told her they had "witnessed… bodies of babies with their heads cut off" at the Kfar Aza kibbutz near the Gaza border - but no Israeli officials have confirmed the claim."
Absolutely no evidence babies have been 'butchered' and beheaded.
CBS News in the US said on Wednesday that Yossi Landau, head of operations at Zaka, Israel's volunteer civilian emergency response organisation, confirmed to them he had "personally seen" adults, children and babies beheaded.
But when asked directly whether "40 babies were beheaded", an IDF spokesman said children were killed - but that reports of beheadings were "unconfirmed".

NOBODY and I repeat NOBODY has claimed that 40 babies were beheaded. This is fake outrage concocted by Hamas sympathisers to discredit the stories about the barbarity of what happened.
What has been reported since Sunday and now verified is that huge numbers of babies and children murdered, some of which were beheaded. They went door to door in a residential area on a Saturday morning killing as many people as possible. Do you think they spared the infants?
Does it really matter of it was 1 baby out of the infant deaths that was beheaded or all of them?
There are videos shared by Hamas of their men beheading people on the kibbutz.

The UK's Channel 4 has a good film about how the attack unfolded. At one kibbutz the gunmen couldn't get through the security gates so waited for someone to arrive. As the gates open the shot the people in the car and went in.
After however long of shooting the gunmen went back to the car, pulled the bodies out left them in the road and drove off. Then some time later another vehicle with Hamas terrorists arrive, they take one of the bodies of the original murder victims and drive off.
They came back to take the corpse of a dead Jew.

A long time ago, I read Yellow Wind (1988) by an Israeli author about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The author talked to many people on both sides. It was horribly depressing. One thing I remember though. After 1948, the partition, the Arab population became refugees, living in camps (this is pre-Gaza). At the time the book was written, it was 40 years after the original war, yet they still lived in now permanent camps, raising new generations who only knew “the camps”. They didn’t want(?) to move on. This was their land too. I dunno, it made me think of all the displaced persons in WWII. They didn’t go back to Germany or Poland. It was their land too but they emigrated, to the UK, to the US, to South America. Post WWII, the US was all powerful. We overthrew the democratically elected ruler of Iran and installed the Shah ffs. Why couldn’t we have …encouraged… some of the other Middle Eastern countries to take the Palestinians. At that time, they were all still desert and camels and a few oil wells run by American and European companies, the oil boom didn’t happen for another 20 years and OPEC.

footnote to the Naomi Klein article: This article was edited at the request of the author to reflect the fact that celebrations of the deaths were rare, and many leading figures on the anti-colonial left, in Palestine and outside of it, clearly denounced the targeting of civilians.
The picture below is how The Guardian originally ran it. Last week she was defending the racist film director Ken Loach who despises Israel and has said the Holocaust should be up for debate.

From the WSJ
A mob of Islamist Arabs incited by Jew-hatred entered the town and killed as many Jews as they could find. They went door to door, broke into the homes of their victims, and slaughtered innocent men, women and children. These gangs raped, mutilated and tortured them while screaming “Kill the Jews!”
That was 94 years ago, on Saturday, Aug. 24, 1929, in Hebron. The picture is essentially the same, only that then the Arab riots that included this massacre ended with 133 Jews murdered. This time, it is several times as many, and we don’t know the final figure.
Given that the events are virtually the same, the question is: Why? There was no state of Israel in 1929. There were no “occupied” territories, no “settlers.” There was no “blockade.” No security fence, no checkpoints, nothing. If the excuses of today’s murderers did not exist at that time, what did exist? A deep, maniacal, murderous and utterly destructive hatred of Jews—the same essential factor operating today, to which all other excuses are subservient.
R286: Google Democratic Socialists of America in NYC, for example.
Nothing specific leaps out. There's an internal struggle over the group's response to the Gaza conflict; a Michigan member has withdrawn his support.
Google “Harvard students support Hamas,” for another.
What comes up is mainly Harvard students' attempts to distance themselves from a social media statement supporting Hamas. Most were not aware what they were signing onto, or the statement was altered after they signed it.
Or try googling “Students cheer Hamas.”
This one is all over the place. One wonders if it's anything like the widespread false claims in the wake of 9/11 of Palestinians cheering in the streets of NY and NJ over the falling towers - videos propagated by the Right were proven to be fake. There can also be pockets of students being misled by online disinformation, not actually understanding what has happened. Social media is full of accounts attempting to mislead people about the attack on Israel.

R287 What sheer, utter dishonesty. Even AOC was forced to distance herself from Dem Soc America demonstrations of support for Hamas in Times Square over the weekend.
Thirty Harvard student orgs signed a letter supporting Hamas. Then they heard that a billionaire hedge funder and other CEOs wanted their names so as to make sure not to hire them—now they’re scrambling to distance themselves.

More from the WSJ opinion piece:
“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” chant the useful idiots at elite institutions and parades in the West. Who are these people? Atheists who support theocratic lunatics, democrats who endorse medieval tyrants, feminists who defend misogynists who parade with the desecrated corpses of women, gays who defend maniacs who would joyfully hang them or toss them off the roof of a tall building. They talk of a secular, democratic and socialist Palestine. As George Orwell observed: “One has to belong to the intelligentsia to believe things like that: no ordinary man could be such a fool.” But the world has now seen what “from the river to the sea” actually means. It is nothing less than a remake of the Nazi Einsatzgruppen.

Israel expelled its own population from Gaza in 2005 so that Palestinian Arabs could begin building their own state. They instead chose Hamas. The enemies of Israel aren’t in favor of a Palestinian state. They aren’t in favor of anything positive, but only of a negative: the denial of life, especially of Jewish life. The goal is genocide. The method is mass murder of the type Jews haven’t experienced since the Holocaust.

R297, this is why, from the WSJ opinion piece...
It has been the policy of the state of Israel not to show what its enemies do to its citizens. That both kept the victims’ dignity and prevented the demoralization of Israelis. But it also avoided letting the world see clearly what kind of threat Israelis were dealing with. What kind of true evil they are fighting against. Now that is clear. The videos showing mass murder; the kidnapping of children, elderly and women; the storming of a music festival to shoot and kill whatever person they could find; and the stories of rape, execution and utter destruction are there for the world to see.
These images and videos were propagated by the assassins themselves. They use them to show their strength and prove Israeli weakness. To demonstrate to the Palestinian Arab population that the Jews can be killed like flies. What does it say of a society that these monsters think this type of “propaganda” is a “good” way to mobilize the population? It screams of a deeply perverse and murderous culture, in love with death and destruction. It is the same culture that teaches toddlers to hate. The same society that pays wages to mass murderers and celebrates on the streets with sweets and shootings when Jews get killed. It is the culture that creates the types of monsters capable of the evil they themselves proudly show to the world through social media.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | October 12, 2023 10:27 AM |
The terrorists themselves are proudly posting their depravity on social media and elsewhere. It is a a big "fuck you" to humanity. As all people who commit evil, they believe they are in the right and are doing good and they dare us all to have the courage to fight back. I doubt we do.

by Anonymous | reply 314 | October 12, 2023 11:16 AM |
R312, I think there is a growing awareness of how capable everyone of us is of committing evil. The mistake we make is in denying it, in denying our primal nature. We are all very capable of evil, we are all very tribal, we are more comfortable with kin and people who look like us. We now know that our brains are wired in ways that helped us survive 10,000 years ago but are detrimental to our survival as a species now.
Instead of denying these things, we have to find ways of structuring society in awareness of these things. I'm not sure we will before we destroy ourselves. This is why identity politics is so dangerous and destructive. It feeds a very old and dark part of the human psyche.

Russia filmed and shared many of its torture videos. Rape, including children, beheadings, mutilation, castration, elaborate painful medieval deaths. But they stayed mainly on Russian Telegram channels.
The videos filmed by Hamas are getting a much bigger audience because there is a much bigger Muslim audience, because the victims are Jewish/Israeli and because men like seeing women raped.

Woke news broadcaster MSNBC lost 33 percent of its primetime viewers during its coverage of the Israel Hamas war.
The outlet's viewer figures were down 24 percent overall for the four days between October 7 and 10 which saw the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas terrorists.
By comparison the shocking events saw a leap in Fox News's audience, up 42 percent, and in CNN's coverage, which saw a 17 percent rise in viewers.
'These numbers tell you a lot about MSNBC, which excels at Trump-era liberal therapy but can’t match others during global historic events' Puck media reporter Dylan Byers wrote.
MSNBC has come under fire for its coverage of the atrocities in Israel with an an Israeli mother whose two sons were take hostage by Hamas exploding at MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday night when asked how she feels about Israel's counterstrikes in Gaza.
Renana Gomeh, whose two sons age 12 and 16 were kidnapped by Hamas, became visibly irritated when Mitchell asked her feelings on the attacks in Gaza.
'I can’t be sympathetic anymore. I can’t be sympathetic to animal human beings — well, they’re not really human beings — who came into my house, broke everything,' said Gomeh.
'Stole everything, took my children from their bedrooms and took them to the Gaza Strip.'
By contrast Fox News reporter Trey Yingst has won praise for his fearless coverage of the shocking scenes unfolding in the Middle East.
The Israeli Defense Force took reporters including Yingst's Fox News crew to Be'eri, just three miles from the Gaza border, on Tuesday
CNN correspondent Clarissa Ward has also won plaudits for her bravery after being forced to take cover in a ditch as rockets fire overhead near the Israeli border with the Gaza Strip.

R357, You must love the letter Q.
Oh, okay, r355. We'll believe you, King of All-Access.
But let's give credence to every bit of Palestinian allegations of Israeli crimes against humanity. Because Hamas supporters and voters would never make up tales.
On the 1948 Day of Independence, Israel was attacked by Arab states. Some Palestinians had stayed in Israel; others had fled. Not surprisingly, there are two schools of thought---Arab and Zionist---as to the causes of the latter.
In either case, this year---no need to go back to the BCE days of yore---was the watershed moment when those pesky non-Israeli Semites just couldn't stop themselves from either attacking Israel or, as in the 6-Day War and based on intelligence findings, being pre-emptively attacked. Losing every single time.
Multiple countries' armed forces vs. Israel. Leaders vowing to drive Israel into the sea. School geography textbooks erasing Israel from maps. Finally, organized terrorism. (Yeah, yeah, the Haganah. Got it. Wars for independence aren't pretty. Context: WW II.)
I'm sure we all are familiar with the accepted Rule of War that "to the victor, the spoils."
Hence, more loss of territory. The Palestinians want it back. Offers have been made over the years, including the Camp David Accords. Good luck with that now.
THE major issue to which Israel will never accede, is the so-called "Right of Return." That is, every Palestinian or descendent of those who fled/ were expelled (whichever you believe) in 1948 should be allowed back into Israel, reclaiming homes and land.
Israel, having been formed to be an autonomous and specifically Jewish state, would be demographically altered by the now-millions of Arabs claiming this RoR.
IOW, my point: There have been attacks. There have been wars. There have been peace offers and counter-offers. But as long as the Palestinians demand RoR, they can whistle into the wind.

A Jewish BBC sports reporter today resigned from his job because of his bosses' refusal to describe Hamas as terrorists.
Noah Abrahams, who is 22 and worked on BBC Radio Derby, said the decision was 'unjustified' and words have the power 'to fuel hate and put fuel on the fire'.
In the name of impartiality, the BBC refers to Hamas as a 'militant' group and described the slaughter of civilians as a 'militant' attack.
Explaining his decision to quit, Mr Abrahams told TalkTV: 'I have morals and I stick by them. I think the BBC's refusal to use the correct terminology is unjustified.
Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid touched on the issue of what to call Hamas on today's show and made a thinly-veiled swipe at the BBC, saying: 'We very clearly call them 'terrorists'. I mean, it was an act of terror what happened - it was a barbaric atrocity.'
It followed a statement from Buckingham Palace last night which said King Charles 'condemns the barbaric acts of terrorism against Israel', while a spokesman for the Prince and Princess of Wales referred to the country's 'right of self defence' after 'Hamas's terrorist attack'.
Later, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also released a statement through their Archewell Foundation which said the couple 'stand against all acts of terrorism and brutality'.
Many of the world's leading media organisations have called Hamas terrorists in their reporting, including famously Left-wing outlets such as the New York Times and The Guardian. ITV does not have a fixed policy on the issue but has also described them as terrorists.
The BBC refers to Hamas as a 'militant' group and described the slaughter of civilians as a 'militant' attack.

R362 is a Hamas fanboi full of shit.
NO MEDIA ORGANISATION RAN THE STORY THAT 40 BABIES WERE BEHEADED.
Some journalists reported stories that up to 40 babies had been murdered, SOME of which were beheaded.
But the story that ISRAEL LIED ABOUT 40 BEHEADED BABIES has now become as much a story as babies burned and shot and is used to push the idea that Israel is lying about the rapes, the tortures and hostages.
Some Hamas sympathisers have tried to push the idea that the German girl who was in the back of the jeep and spat on is alive. Some Hamas sympathisers have tried to push the idea that the kids at the music festival were killed accidentally in crossfire between Hamas and the IDF rather than directly targeted.

NBC NEWS: Netanyahu’s office shared today three photos on X that it described as babies killed by Hamas.
Earlier in the day, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken acknowledged in a news conference that he was shown the photographs and videos from the Israeli government.
"It’s hard to find the right words. It’s beyond what anyone would ever want to imagine, much less actually see and God forbid experience. A baby, an infant riddled with bullets. Soldiers beheaded. Young people burned alive in their cars or in their hideaway rooms," he said.

A “doxxing truck” is driving around the campus of Harvard University with digital billboards that display the names and photos of students who allegedly signed a letter blaming Israel for Hamas’ violent attack that killed more than 1,200 people over the weekend.
Giant video screens hung on the sides and back of the truck display the words “Harvard’s Leading Antisemites” in gothic script over a slideshow of Ivy Leaguers’ headshots and names in bold, red block letters, according to photos on social media.
Nonprofit news watchdog Accuracy in Media was behind the truck, which showed the students involved in the 34 student groups that signed a letter saying Israel is “entirely responsible” for Hamas’ deadly attack on Saturday.
The truck’s surprise appearance around campus on Wednesday “was the first day [of a] multi-day, multi-pronged campaign involving multiple billboards and a variety of other tactics,” Accuracy in Media president Adam Guillette told The Post.
The group deployed the truck because it’s “incredibly important to know who the hateful antisemites are in our society. And it’s important for people to know that their actions have consequences,” Guillette said in an interview with The Post.
Students walk through a gate at Harvard University, Thursday, June 29, 2023. 6 The group deployed the truck because it’s “incredibly important to know who the hateful antisemites are in our society.”AP
“Our mobile billboards will be at Harvard for the foreseeable future,” he said, noting that Accuracy in Media “never violates any laws.”
Photos of the truck shared on social media blocked out the names and photos of the students.
The vehicle also displayed the website HarvardHatesJews.com, which leads to a forum that encourages users to send an email to members of Harvard’s board of trustees.
10,000 assault rifles purchased for civilian security teams.Guns, helmets and body armor to be distributed to hundreds of residents of border regions, mixed Jewish-Arab cities, West Bank settlements
It's been several days, and the more I read (and am horrified) I keep wondering why the HELL the people on those rural kibbutzes - some just a MILE away from the Gaza border - weren't armed to the teeth. These men and women with young families, didn't have guns in their homes - does Israel have some kind of strict gun control law?
I keep reading about the families crowding into internal saferooms, only to see the doors blown off and terrorist get in to slaughter and kidnap them. No one had guns or gun training? In south Israel, with all of the strife and danger, so close to Gaza/Hamas?
I did see that most of the settlements seemed well-fortified, with metal entry gates, with high walls topped with circular barbed wire. That's ok, but clearly wasn't enough. I'm just shocked....there are American households near the Mexican border (hell, not even near the border) filled to the brim with guns/ammo, with all adults trained to use in case of home invasion.
There were a few stray stories about settlements that were armed, and used them - those sustained nearly no losses, and killed nearly all of the invaders.
by Anonymous | reply 394 | October 12, 2023 6:35 PM |
Want to add to my post above r394, why in the hell weren't there IDF/army outposts blanketing south Israel? I read it took hours, in some cases 10 to 12 HOURS, for the army to arrive to attacked settlements to free and assist them. That is insane - Israel is not that large of a country, and their army is sizable.
I'm aware that much of the IDF may have been stationed at the north borders, near Lebanon, which is such a trouble spot. They may also have been fortifying the larger cities. But in a region so close to the Hamas-infested Gaza Strip, why wasn't there a larger IDF presence?
I also get that Israel's main concern has been rockets and shelling, so they've heavily invested in the Iron Dome defense and other similarly focused efforts. That has protected Tel Aviv well, and the larger cities. But these rural settlements were left badly exposed here. They never assumed there might be a terrorist-led land invasion?
And there have been articles and questions in recent years regarding the potential use of drones, human-carrying or otherwise, being used for small warfare or terror acts, both in the US and abroad. In this case, it was paragliders, which have been around for recreational use for years. I'm just shocked that no one thought of these possibilities, especially an advanced military country like Israel that is so security-obsessed. Where was the failure here?

he NYU Law School Bar Association is voting on whether to oust their president after she sparked fury by claiming Hamas atrocities against Israel were 'necessary'.
Ryna Workman, 24, conflated the internationally-recognized terror group's attacks with 'Palestinian resistance' and claimed Israel 'bears full responsibility'.
The non-binary student now faces being removed from her post as the SBA as the group revealed 'multiple students' have received 'death threats' due to her article.
Hamas, which controls the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, attacked Israel on Saturday in the worst breach of the country's defenses since Arab armies waged war in 1973. Israel has responded with air strikes on Gaza.
Distancing themselves from Workman's Monday article - headed 'Message from the President' - the student group said Tuesday it did not 'write, approve, or see' it.
'The 'Message from the President' reflects their personal views and does not represent the views of SBA as an organization or any of its officers,' the group said in a statement.
They added that board members had voted to 'initiate the removal' of Workman and they would conduct hearings from October 17 as part of the process.
'Multiple students have received significant targeted harassment and death threats,' they said.
'We are horrified by these vile personal attacks and threats to students' safety. The doxxing of any NYU Law student is unacceptable and disturbing.'
The group issued a second statement on Wednesday to clarify that it condemned Hamas violence.
'As the violence in Israel persists, and we continue to struggle with feelings of anger and sorrow at the tragic loss of innocent lives, we need to make several things abundantly clear on behalf of the NYU Law Board of Trustees and our Law School as a whole,' they said.
NYU Law unequivocally condemns the recent terrorist acts and the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas in Israel.
'The murder and kidnapping of civilians, and the use of sexual violence and the separation and torture of children, are all abominable and atrocious.
'We want to say, loud and clear, to our community: Any statement that does not recognize this brutality does not reflect the values of NYU Law.'

I fully support this.
I saw a tweet from a young doctor who on Saturday who said he was appalled how many of his fellow professionals were supporting mass murder. The response from some were absolutely vile. I've logged a few and have been going through their profiles to find out where they work, what their specialties are.
One doctor in her 30s (*a white cis queer woman!) was especially vile toward him and I looked through her tweets and there was anti Israel (Jewish) stuff for YEARS, some of which comes close to full blown Holocaust denial. Hardcore Corbyn handmaiden naturally. She's since locked her account as there was some media coverage but I followed her with an alt account before that and am watching her have a racist melt down, screen grabbing the new ones and finding disgusting old ones. There are also some grossly unprofessional tweets discussing patients and colleagues.
Just saying that when *I* bought a new house in a small town *I* didn't post photos on social media complete with door number. LOL

This puzzles me, too, r394. Because almost everyone in Israel has had gun training because military service is compulsory for all able bodied man and women. (The ultra Orthodox are exempt, a huge sore point among average Israelis.) A friend's father moved to Israel to take a faculty position at Hebrew University in his 40s, but not before completing his required time in the IDF.
So Israelis are much more qualified to handle firearms than the average American who buys an automatic rifle.

What can be done? The west unleashed radical islamism across the middle east, blindly funding it during the post ww2 power grab and cold war frenzy. If there was any chance of establishing a moderate democratized middle east the state should have been prepared from the start to tell the public it would be a multi-generational project, not just multi-decade. Radical islamism has a powerful hold now on multiple generations of arabs across many nations both sunni and shia - what can you do other than crush it with a hammer and return to permanent occupation of the middle east? There's no way out - and what do you do about the clerical influence of Saudi Arabia and Iran maintaining the ideological influence of hardline Islamism? As long as we are oil dependent we're in a weak position with them and Iran is backed by adversaries as we decline in power.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | October 12, 2023 7:58 PM |
The issue of what to do with the Palestinians comes down to the failure of the west to throw its weight around - the heartless wealth hoarding warlord nations of the region don't give a fuck about refugees from some other place and we set the entire area up as a zone for resource proxy wars with the Soviets and capitulate constantly to their weak governments so as not to disrupt various financial dealings etc.

A criminal policy of revenge is underway. Since Saturday, Israel has dropped hundreds of tons of bombs on Gaza. Netanyahu’s call for residents to leave is a farce with no bearing on reality. The Gaza Strip is closed off on all sides and the residents have no way out. There are no shelters and no way to seek cover from airstrikes. Among the people killed, some of them still trapped under debris, are entire families wiped out in a single bombardment – including at least 140 minors and 105 women. The death toll is rising by the minute.
The order to prefer damage over precision has also been carried out. Hundreds of homes already lie in ruins, including residential towers reduced to rubble and houses that collapsed on top of the inhabitants. More than 180,000 people have been internally displaced. Roads and public buildings, including schools and medical clinics, have been damaged by airstrikes. Hospitals are functioning only partially – some were damaged by bombing, and all are severely lacking medical equipment and fuel for electric generators.
The decision to imprison Gaza even more tightly than usual has also been implemented. The crossings are closed and goods cannot be brought in. Israel has disconnected Gaza from the power grid and the population now depends on the small local power plant, which will only hold out for several days until the diesel fuel runs out. Water is also in short supply: almost all the water extracted in Gaza requires desalination or purification to drink, and these rely on electricity. Israel has also cut back on the water it sells to Gaza, and part of the water network has been damaged by bombing.
There is no justification for these actions, which constitute war crimes openly ordered by top Israeli officials. Even in the face of horror and terror – intentionally harming civilians, their property and civilian infrastructure is always prohibited. One crime does not justify another, nor does one kind of injustice justify another. Acts of revenge are prohibited by basic moral principles and by the provisions of international law that Israel is obliged to uphold.
Contrary to what Israeli ministers are implying, this policy is not new, but has been implemented towards Gaza for many years. The death, destruction, pain and horror it has wrought have led to nothing but more horror. It is time to demand to a different reality – a new future for all those who live here.....

And then there's Afghanistan. I heard on the news yesterday that there's a dire food shortage and one of the problems the NGO's have is women are not allowed to help distribute the food because... uh, the Taliban hates women and girls?
And are the Chinese still putting Uighers in concentration - I mean "re-education" camps?
And the morality police keep killing young women who dare to wear their scarves the wrong way - because... Islam or something.
And then there's the honor killings, still on-going, again because... all Muslims just hate women and have nothing better to do that to spend umpteen millions torturing them?

I guess R453 is being sarcastic -- hard to sort out -- but whether you like Muslims or not my point still stands. Israel's plan is no plan at all. Eventually it will blow up in their face even worse than Oct. 7. if they don't change course.

Israel should go into Gaza and the West Bank and rape every teenage girl. Then the Palestinians will be so busy murdering their daughters for dishonoring their families that they won’t have time to fight back.

R454, please provide your suggestions. The Palestinians have rejected offer after offer. When the Israelis left Gaza, the Palestinians destroyed greenhouses left out of goodwill by Israelis, started endless rocket fire into Israel, and used donated materials for humanitarian aid into military purposes. I would say that is no plan at all, but Palestinians have been quite clear that their only goal is to overthrow Israel.
When did conditions for negotiating a lasting peace with Hezbollah and Hamas ever exist? What compromise would they have agreed to?
Don’t believe Hezbollah and Hamas have a compromise position. Their position is for Israel to abandon its state entirely. At least Hamas's charter, which is available in translation, is for the obliteration of the Jewish state, and the obliteration of all Jews.
Not sure how to compromise with that.
If Palestinians in Gaza want electricity and water, they need to demand that Hamas release all hostages immediately.
Otherwise, provisions need to be made in Sinai for humanitarian relief for refugees from Gaza—to be paid for by humanitarian NGOs.

Fatah and the P.L.O. have recognized Israel’s statehood. Fatah was driven out of Gaza by Hamas in a conflict in which many Palestinians were killed. The residents of Gaza, who are now ruled by Hamas, are in no position to demand anything, but are going to die anyway.

Four out of five Jewish Israelis believe the government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are to blame for the mass infiltration of Hamas terrorists into Israel and the massacre that followed.
An overwhelming majority – 86% of respondents, including 79% of coalition supporters, said the surprise attack from Gaza is a failure of the country’s leadership, while a staggering 92% said the war is causing anxiety.
Furthermore, almost all the respondents (94%) believe the government must bear some responsibility for the lack of security preparedness that led to the assault, with over 75% saying the government holds most of the responsibility.

This has to be one of the most ridiculous statements I've seen posted on DL in the last couple of days R458.
DEMAND? One thing which has become very clear is that absolutely nobody cares about Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Hamas most certainly doesn't and has set them up to be cannon fodder. Nobody cares what they say or do or if they live or die. The other Arab states don't care. Hamas don't care. Israel don't care.
[bold]46% of the 2.1 million people living in Gaza are 14 years old and under. That's nearly one million little children and babies[/bold]. They didn't do this. Nobody cares what they demand or ask or want. They are all trapped and can't get out. The one exit border crossing which was open to Egypt was bombed by Israel because "tunnels" so the exit is now permanently closed. They don't have food, water, medical supplies or fuel. Gaza is approximately 138 square miles and it is going to turn into a shitfight for daily survival with no food or water very shortly. The Palestinian civilians are just cannon fodder and human shields and Hamas want it that way. This is an extermination.
I 100% support the eradication of Hamas - every single one of them. But I will never get behind the slaughter of any children - be they Israeli or Palestinian and anyone who advocates for this is a terrible, terrible broken person.

This is blatantly false. There have been no presidential elections since incumbent Mahmoud Abbas was elected in 2005, and no parliamentary elections since 2006. Hamas declared Abbas illegitimate in 2009. Hamas - knowing they will not be re-elected - have forbidden all further elections. Initially, Hamas came to power with 40% of the total vote.
In a poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in March 2023, 63 percent of respondents in the West Bank and Gaza viewed the PA as a burden on the Palestinian people.

The settlements control the region. They are heavily policed by Israel. Settler violence against Palestinians has been documented assiduously by human rights organizations.

R483 “Ethnic cleansing?” You are sadly mistaken. 2.1 Arabs live within Israel as citizens and have all rights of citizens. How many Jews live in Arab countries? In 1945, roughly 1 million Jews lived peacefully in the various Arab states of the Middle East, many of them in communities that had existed for thousands of years. Jews were ethnically cleansed from these countries and their property confiscated. The majority of the Jewish refugees left their homes penniless and destitute and with nothing more than the shirts on their backs. Today, nearly half of Israel's native population descends from the Jewish refugees of the Arab world. Murders, rape and kidnappings should be condemned. Palestinians start wars and then expect to secure victim status after they commit atrocities.
1955 Palestinian population in Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem: 987,755.
2021 Palestinian Population in Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem: 5,222,748

I'll never forget when Netanyahu barged his way into Congress during the Obama administration -no respect for the first president of color -🥺posturing at the lecturn as if he were America's president! He's a heartless ,🥴😩😭nasty piece of work and is a horrible representation/ face of the whom this country should rally behind. He has been caught 😭 on video saying how 80 percent of Americans are in support of him and how self assured he is of having this country in his pocket. Israel can do better than having this guy as their spokesperson.

What does Obama’s race have to do with this? Netanyahu is an asshole, but if he’s disrespectful to any US president it’s disgraceful.

Everyone trying to assume the most morally superior high position - while shaming everyone they believe themselves to be superior to, for their own social and political gain - is exhausting. And the constant ownership of “the children! the children!” as another means of moral superiority is so suspect. I can’t even see beyond these things.
As a mature person, I’ve been witnessing this conflict for decades - about five decades, myself - and it has never been this hysterical and, I would say, the plight of the Palestinians has never been so vocal. And I’ve always supported the Palestinians over the Israeli government. But with the cacophony of noise around this, it’s hard to tell if people are drawing nuanced distinctions or if the support for Palestine is anti-Semitic, etc. There is A LOT of smoke here. And social media isn’t helping.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | October 13, 2023 6:52 AM |
R556 Of course it’s antisemitism. Europeans love Palestinians? Please! Europeans HATE Arabs, primarily because they’ve seen firsthand the damage that Arabs can do.

R557, The British are an exception, IMO, if what else you claim is true.
Lawrence of Arabia, the whole "1000 and 1 Nights" mystique---I believe the romantic fascination persists along with the modern necessity of OIL, of which Israel has none.
Indeed, one can only imagine the geopolitics were Israel atop oil fields similar to Saudi Arabia's.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | October 13, 2023 10:23 AM |
Haha, r563! No. Just an observer as you. But to respond:
The next wave has been telegraphed with Israel's warning to Gazans to evacuate the area. Israel is not overly concerned about the logistics, traffic chaos, or timing; she warned, and that's that.
IDF troops will now go building to building, hunting Hamas. Netanyahu was not being hyperbolic when he said that every Hamas terrorist is a dead man walking. Israel has no self-imposed time limit to accomplish this.
I believe what simultaneously will occur---and we might never learn of this in any detail---will be Mossad squads sent elsewhere to assassinate Hamas leaders where they are taking refuge.
There is, beyond the obvious, another reason for the intensity of Israel's/ Netanyahu's retaliation: the psychology. Man and country are being roundly criticized for unpreparedness, for lack of imagination, for ignoring intelligence reports. So now it's an "Oh, YEAH? WATCH THIS!"
Israel isn't about "turn the other cheek and love thy enemies as thyself." That's for the Christian West. The Middle East operates on "An eye for an eye" time.

I will bet that you can’t provide proof or a link where Syria said that or threatened that it would become a regional war. . They said it could become a regional war. Even DL knows that.
Iran the funder and protector of Hamas did say that it would become one.
Others many others inc the US are concerned or worried about the war going regional. Many are working to help prevent that. Time will tell.
But the attack will go forward and it’s going to be horrific.

“We found bomb shelters full of young people pushed inside, and with hand grenades they killed them,” said Veruv.
“There were infants and young people here who were mutilated,” Spielman recalled. “Heads, arms, limbs being cut off. People being sliced open, and the knife left there in front of their parents.”
A kindergarten in the heart of the kibbutz still has crayons on the low tables, and paper cutouts of balloons on the wall. “Shana Tova” — happy new year — exclaims a red sign next to the classroom rules of order.
The kiddie desks are covered with pistachio shells, an indication that terrorists rested in this room during the hours-long cavalcade of horrors. Behind the desks, twenty drawers bear the names of the children in the class — Lia, Maya, Noam, Niri, Niv, Omri. Some of these children were likely hacked apart by the same men who sat in their seats to enjoy a snack after the savagery.

Merkavas rolling towards Gaza, about to start delivering Old Testament justice in a matter of days. There's some talk between Israel, the US and the Palestinian Authority going on that the latter could take over Gaza, finally civilising them just like the West Bank.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | October 13, 2023 1:13 PM |
So based on what they have asked people in Gaza to do, I think this might be there strategy. Israel will basically force everyone out of the top of the country. They will bomb the shit out of it until there's nothing but dust. Then they will keep bombing to take out the network of tunnels. They repeat this process over moving south until the entire strip is nothing but rubble and people.
Then, once they smoked out all the terrorist out in the sunlight, the people will have to rebuild literally from scratch. No one will be spending time building tunnels when they don't even have a roof over their head. The UN or someone else will install a puppet government in hopes Hamas does not return.

The righteous arrogance of some Zionists and the extreme, no other way but violence attitude of some Palestinians makes me want to tip toe away and close the door.
They want to argue and they want to fight, and they want to be right. They're justifications are mostly idiotic to me and I want no part of something that's dragged on for 70 years.
They had all that time to talk, had historic, international peace agreements, they don't want to get it together. They want to fight . They like it, or else they would have done something different by now.

Hamas took the new pipes that were to be used for water and sewage and used them in making rockets instead. There’s no question that Palestinians will continue to work toward genocide of the Jews ahead of all other needs, it’s exactly like the Nazis prioritizing trains to transport Jews to the concentration camps even though the trains were needed for the war effort.

It's sad how each side is so tribal they don't recognize the horrors each does against the other.
The Israelis justify keeping an embargo on Gaza and their isolated attacks to curtail Hamas terrorist activity that often result in collateral deaths..
The Palestinians side are silent on the massacre on the music festival and the kibbutzes and Muslims globally are staging protests to support Hamas and Palestinians.

I agree that with Hamas as the Palestinian government there is no logical solution since they won't recognize Israel's right to exist and only want the extermination of the Jewish state. Hamas is using the embargo, and the isolated attacks in Gaza as further excuse to commit acts of terrorism, but they are the [principal reason for current situation. Back in 2000 when they both sides actually agreed on terms for a peace accord, Arafat changes his mind the last minute and threw in the unacceptable condition of Jerusalem to go to the Palestinian Arabs, knowing that it was a deal breaker. There was never a true good faith negotiation because the militants want this to go on indefinitely.
