I think it was the opposites thing. She liked him because he was the opposite of Big in many ways but then she resented him for not being like Big.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 17, 2023 2:22 PM |
The Aidan episodes are painful to watch especially round 2 when Carrie fucked him over yet again. I was so glad when they brought him back with baby Tate for a cameo and Carrie looked at him like 'I think I want him back again.'.

Carrie and Aidan had nothing in common. She’s a narcissist and I always found him passive-aggressive. Their reunion will end in tears.

It’s a romance nobody wants or asks for. Kind of like the last season of the first series with Mikhail Baryshnikov.
I don’t think anyone asked for that and yet SJP couldn’t drag it out long enough.
Sound familiar, Sara Ramirez?

Now watching the asinine episode where she blocks the bike rider (Mr. Hargitay)…it was clearly shot on the SW corner of 22nd & 8th. They might not (probably would not) have known. This thing thing was shot and edited last year (?)... anyway it was in the can for a long time before it aired, like Gilded Age. They were probably merrily shooting away thinking we've got ten more years of this creative dynamo!

Who says older women can’t rock long hair? Sarah Jessica Parker proves they can.
At 58, Parker is leading the charge of older women embracing longer hair. Her locks are tended to by celebrity stylist Serge Normant and colourist Gina Gilbert, who gives SJP phenomenal balayage that makes her hair look sexier than ever, whether it’s undone or done up. But, as with all things beauty, time and energy go into keeping long locks in peak condition. It’s all about maintenance.

The tone of the penis pump scenes concerned me. I've only seen a penis pump in porn as an aid to masturbation and didn't know you could use them to get an erection for real sex though I guess you can. i'm not sure the series ever had this on before though I seem to remember Samanatha had sex with one older rich man. I guess he used viagara. However Seema is not Samantha. Samantha was more playful in sex and in life. Though she would say she always came to every party I imagine she would have waited for the man to leave before using the vibrator. Seema seems humorless and unplayful and selfish. No wonder Carrie likes her.

Charlotte and her first world problems are redundant unless they gave her some serious drama like Harry croaking.
Miranda cheating was told really badly too, they should have had her already separated and dipping her first digit into the pussy pool
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 19, 2023 1:59 PM |
They should have shown Charlotte having friction with the other rich (much younger) moms. There’s a world of possibilities. Prim and proper Gen X Charlotte having to interact with tacky, trashy Millennial moms.

It seems obvious they could have used the actress' real life challenges eg Kristin's use of whatever she did to her face and weight gain, SJP's continued effort to stay thin. The only one they seemed to actually use was Cynthia's real life coming out. But how wanted is a 50s new woman in the lesbian world, rather than just magically meeting someone to be a theyfriend.

R48: She got a ton of Golden Globes though.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | July 19, 2023 3:19 PM |
SJP got 4 wins from Golden Globe which wasn't fully deserved. They threw her an Emmy for the last season even though her best work was arguably seasons 2-4 (when Carrie was slightly more like a real human).
Kim won a Globe too, but was robbed of an Emmy on 5 occasions. They gave Nixon the Emmy for the last season even though I thought Cattrall was more impressive with the cancer storyline and letting herself be loved by a man.
Season 6 also scored Davis her sole nomination to date, I think one of the episodes she submitted was when she lost her baby.

When Che drops the bomb that, just as Miranda is lamenting the fact that she and Steve have lost their chance to be friends, Che suggests that maybe “friends” might be the right label for their relationship, too.
This would be a tragic moment for viewers invested in the Che-randa romance, if there were any.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | July 20, 2023 11:58 AM |
It’s surprising how well Miranda takes the Che breakup, actually. Che’s magnetism was so powerful to Miranda that she blew up her entire life so they could be together. Then, Che’s pilot flops and their ego takes a hit, they spend a few weeks in the doldrums living on Pirate’s Booty, and that’s just it? The whole relationship has to sink with the “Che Pasa” ship? And Miranda just lets it all go?
For all those who missed the colder, more cynical version of Miranda, maybe she is on her way back. RIP, love-dovey Miranda. We hardly knew ye.

R71 so Carrie could look super sexy. Why do the writers always use the trope of the character initially bombing but then pulling it back and doing a great job? I'm thinking of Carrie teaching at the annexe, Samantha's cancer speech, Carrie's poem reading where she starts to falter but recovers etc.

R74 I don't. First, Miranda isn't her, why did she feel compelled to turn a character into a copy of her own experience.
Second, did she not question the quality of the writing?

R78 many women almost have abortions, the fact she kept the kid and totally changed her life for Brady says it all. Most women her age would have just joined a book club and had a facelift

Every week I think it can’t get worse, and every week the riding manages to be more and more absurd.
For starters, none of these things would’ve carried on in that sort of a Manhattan snowstorm. MOMA would be closed. This ridiculous conference would be canceled because no conference is attended exclusively by people in the host hotel. There wouldn’t even be a janitor cleaning Madison apothecary (which is funny enough that they think this tiny pharmacy paying Madison Ave rent has a janitor like that), as the planned snowfall probably would have had them pre-planning a close. I’ve seen the upper Eastside crawl to a stand still for just a few inches. No way would the things be open or with these women be traipsing around in ridiculous get an No way would the things be open or would these women be traipsing around in ridiculous get ups. Absurd plotting.
And why the hell are we supposed to be sympathetic to Miranda getting mad at Steve sleeping with someone else? Not only has the woman been around relationship for the past year, but she was hooking up with Che before breaking up with Steve. She’s attempted a threesome. She’s spent the last living her sexual libertine side. And he was supposed to just sit there and jerk off?! I guess we’re supposed to be upset that it was very bed that he fucked her in, but what the fuck does that matter? She’s been sleeping in someone else’s bed!
Steve’s moment of anger was actually real and justified, but of course they had to roll it back and make him look bad. Fuck that.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 20, 2023 8:25 PM |
Can someone explain to me why Carrie needed Che at her keynote speech (which wasn't even a speech, it was a reading, nothing more, so why would she be so nervous?) She and Che aren't friends, Che did nothing to help or prepare her and we know the only reason Che needed to be there was to hear Carrie's "inspirational" words to pull her out of her funk. (Saint Carrie to the rescue yet again.) Carrie could have brought a mannequin there for inspiration for as much as Che helped her.
If you need to have a character in a scene for a particular reason where that character wouldn't normally be, then for fuck's sake, take the moment to make it believable. Here's a scenario that took me under five seconds to come up with- Carrie needs jokes for her speech. She asks Che to write some (and offers to pay her, which Che wouldn't turn down). Che says- what do I know about being a widow? Fine, says Carrie, then meet me beforehand and we can troll the booths and maybe it will give you some inspiration. (Which would have fit in perfectly with the later Widow Wand scene.) Che's obligation to come to the con in the snowstorm would have been- it's a job, not- I need to do this for my very best friend Carrie... oh, what's her last name again?
I say it every week, and every week it's more and more applicable- these are some of the laziest fucking writers I have ever witnessed. This is stuff taught in Screenwriting 101 and week after week, they just don't get it. I could write this fucking show in my sleep and do better.

It’s interesting to think what the show would have become if Darren Star had never left and MPK and SJP never got such control. I think MPK sort of quietly ruined the show and the movies, but got away with in the beginning because we were all invested enough to forgive some things, and the writers at the time were actually strong enough to generate good ideas, or turn MPK and SJP’s bad ideas into more believable ones. But now, with most of the old writers (and Cattrall) gone, all of the bad decisions are coming to light.

You can find everything she found out pretty easily just by looking through social media and publicly available information. I certainly have. I get curious about people I went to school with, random names from my past, and then go see what I can find. Nothing stalker-ish, just things like, "Oh, she ended up getting an MD/PhD and still lives in our hometown with her husband and kids."

MPK is a strange one. He’s done some great work (The Comeback) along with dreck. Darren Starr left early in the S&TC series and MPK was responsible for the best seasons (3-5), which I find still watchable today. But he is just past his prime. He’s nearly 70, it’s time to retire.

I think it would have been nice if Carrie had said 'Aidan sent condolences after Big died' assuming he and Steve are still in touch and Steve told him. Because you know Aidan would have reached out. And I THINK I spotted Aidan's chair in Carrie's apt in this episode.

I'm no SJP fan but Kim is not saint either. She said she did the cameo for the fans - my ass. There's a lot of parts, characters that I actually like, but the whole just isn't gelling for me. And the writing is often pretty bad. They're spending so much time on random asides - like Lily losing her virginity and needing condoms, and LTW's conference, that they don't give enough weight to what should be the main arcs. For example, a Steve-Miranda blowout fight after everything that's happened shouldn't be over that quickly. In three minutes he cusses her out, apologizes, they make peace, they lay together, and Miranda loses all of her former angst and guilt just because Steve has been fucking people? What?
Something positive: I like that the double breakup with Steve and Che and now maybe, just maybe, we'll really see Miranda find herself, reestablish herself, and not be so damn needy and panicky and constantly beside herself.
Seema is a nice supporting character for Carrie. And I actually really like Nya, but she's even more dead weight than before. Though, I'm assuming now she'll get more time as a friend and confidant of Miranda as Miranda finds a place of her own (I'm guessing) and either takes a breather from relationships or tries to find a woman more her speed.

It is strange that SJP seems to be trying to look older. She is not 60 yet, but with the hair, makeup and styling she seems to be half-way through her 60s at least.

She looked good when she was speaking at "Widowcon." Though with everything that can be done now, who knows how accurate it is. I actually don't think SJP has aged horribly considering she's thin, blonde, a smoker for along time.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | July 21, 2023 3:56 AM |
I do not think she aged horribly either, which is why it is odd that she allows herself to be presented in a way that makes her look like she has.
Even as the frau-ish mother of the bride in Plaza Suite she looks better than she does in this series.

I hate that I keep tuning into this show, hoping it will suddenly be as great as the original SATC but being let down by it again and again. With any luck, maybe Samantha's season finale cameo will have her come back to annihilate Carrie and Miranda, while Che catches a ricocheted bullet and succumbs as well. I'd watch a third season of Seema, LTW, and Nya, with better developed story lines that quickly leave past their connections to the original ensemble in the dust. I suppose I could stand Charlotte in this too, just because she's still recognizable with her original character.

The break-up with Che could allow the character to be salvaged from the bizarre "affluent middle-aged white woman unlearn her beliefs about gender, race, etc." morality play. Nixon probably likes the "Re-education of an Idealist" arc, though.

Seema “proposes” to Carrie that the two of them rent a summer house together in the Hamptons. Carrie giddily agrees, which is funny only because, just a couple of decades ago, she, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha all thought that as 30-somethings, they were too old for a shared Hamptons house, calling it “pathetic” and likening it to being “the oldest kid at summer camp.” But now, in their 50s, Carrie and her gal pal can afford a luxury rental on the beach with more bathrooms than occupants. Nothing pathetic about that.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | July 21, 2023 12:13 PM |
That snow coat might have been the series' most ridiculous choice. Even if you believe she'd own something so hideous, she would have chosen a coat more practical for a blizzard.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | July 21, 2023 12:15 PM |
I don't get R134's point. In the original series they balked at the idea as "pathetic" (especially when Sam told them about her assistant, Nina, who was sharing a summer share with 18 girls) but then liked it a little once they did it. And now, it's less people in a bigger, better place.

Carrie mentioned her family in the original show. I think there was even a picture of her and her mom. She told the guy from Vogue that her dad left her and her mom when she was young. We only ever meet Charlotte's brother and Miranda's sister. I think the limited family aspect worked for the most part.

The clothing choices for the snowstorm scene were ridiculous. No one would try to navigate slippery sidewalks in those shoes and carrying their designer handbags. Have they not heard about handbag umbrellas to protect those multi-thousand dollar bags? Anyone wearing what Carrie did in that snowstorm would have been blown over. I know because I got blown over in a blizzard last Winter and it took me several minutes just to get back on my feet and I was wearing boots and appropriate Winter gear.

Why is Steve's new lover the "Whole Foods Girl?" Steve's in his mid-50's. Even if (unlikely) there's a 30-year age difference, she's 25. Seems disrespectful toward an off-screen character in a low-status job. And in earlier Season 2 episodes Steve's portrayed as closer to 70 than 55.

The last season was abysmal but it held attention to some small degree out of a curiosity to see how the writing would adjust to the passage of time. This 2023 season, though, I "watched" the first 4? or 5? episodes in a fell swoop and it was unbearably bad: I kept adjusting the volume downward and my attention to other things but the stink of the show was still there. No one had one ball enough to say "We can't air this. It's too horrible"
by Anonymous | reply 167 | July 21, 2023 5:51 PM |
Can someone explain why LTW wouldn't just wear her wig out instead of carrying a gigantic, awkward wig box all the way from home to MOMA on foot in a snow storm? Since she wasn't wearing that Billy Porter drag queen bolero onstage, there was no point in her wearing it on the street where no one would see her instead of just wearing a hooded coat that would cover her head (and wig).
The way these writers portray these women, you wonder how they all got to their 50s without killing themselves in some Darwin Awards-like accident.

Again, like with Che and Carrie at Widow-Con, the writers could still have accomplished the reason for having the scene without needing to have it break the confines of credibility. There is no reason LTW couldn't have taken her wig off (perhaps it was askew from the weather) and reposition it. Same result, but without making the character look like a fucking idiot.

Well, isn't Sara Ramirez part of the problem there r197. And now that it's blown up in their faces, isn't everybody scrambling to do some damage control? Yeah, MPK is no doubt part of the problem, but Sara ensnared themself (shit, I hate stupid pronouns, but what the hell, let's go with it for now) in this as much as anybody.

I don't know where Widow-Con was, but I am going to assume it was a midtown west hotel, like the Marriott Marquis, or it could have even been at the Javits Center (though I doubt it was so big that it needed to encompass that much square footage). Che lives somewhere around the West 20s or 30s based on the subway stop Miranda got on when she left in the middle of the night, so really, she had a relatively short distance to go. Much shorter than Carrie, who is on the Upper East Side.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | July 22, 2023 6:14 PM |
Miranda’s “Brooklyn” townhouse is actually in Chelsea, on West 22nd between 8th & 9th. Anna Wintour’s daughter lives “next door,” and just past her is the famous Harvard and NYU law professor Arthur Miller… Grace Coddington lives closer to 8th in the apts. just east of the German Church. David Halberg (the ballet dancer) and Richard Greenberg (he wrote Take Me Out) live on the corner of 22nd/9th. The great gay American poet John Ashbery lived there as well, for decades.
N.B. Also on the block is the first home of GMHC—and hosted early Act Up meetings (see The Normal Heart).

Nixon and Ramirez have responded to criticisms of the relationship and Che's character. Nixon says she has "no idea" why Che is so disliked.
"Che is also not perfect at all. (They’re) this sexy, funny, unexpected non binary character. Hopefully you weren’t expecting that person to be a two dimensional advertisement for everything that a boy or a girl scout could be—I mean, we don’t do squeaky clean. "
Ramirez has previously said that they don't engage with the online hate and maintains that they are "really proud of the representation that we've created."
“We have built a character who is a human being, who is imperfect, who’s complex, who is not here to be liked, who’s not here for anybody’s approval. They’re here to be themselves."

[quote] I do miss the old days of network tv with 3 channels. In those days audience reaction was swift and damning. If an audience hated a character they were written out in a few episodes and never spoken of again.
That's mostly because they do full season dumps at once (not in this case, necessarily), and there's no way to fix something if the audience doesn't respond to it. I've worked that way before and it is nail biting. I like that the audience lets you know what's working and what isn't. I find it a huge help. And if I don't have that, and I've created something that is going out (and staying out) with no feedback along the way and it isn't received well, then you're just fucked. And instead of admitting it, these idiots are doubling down. So glad they all have so much "fuck you" money that they can afford to alienate their audience.

And Just Like That's Sara Ramirez Breaks Down Che and Miranda's 'Sad' Split
Che is a very truthful character. They tell you the truth whether you like what you’re hearing or not,”
It’s important we remember that LGBTQIA+ people don’t have to be perfect, just like the women don’t have to be perfect. We get to be imperfect, we get to be unlikable and you still get to root for our humanity.”
AJLT executive producer Michael Patrick King, for his part, told the outlet that the goal for Che in season 2 was to show the “vulnerability beneath the bravura.” Ramirez echoed the sentiment, noting that they wanted to “dive into more nuanced storytelling that is complicated and messy and human and difficult.”
by Anonymous | reply 217 | July 23, 2023 3:35 PM |
Sara also discussed fatphobia.
While working on their sitcom pilot, Che struggled with body image issues after receiving criticism about their weight from a costumer on set.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Thursday, Ramirez said that they could relate to the “internalized fatphobia” Che deals with this season.
“That’s something that most of us, if not all of us, have grown up with,” they said. “It’s been really helpful for me to have had the growth that I’ve had around my internalized fatphobia. I’m not in the place that Che is at with it, but as the actor, I was able to recall what it feels like to give your power over to people who don’t know you or care about you, and then fall apart in your own relationship about it.”

Many missed opportunities with this series. Too many egos and writers who don't understand the characters (and can't write for shit) fucked it up. Now Kim will magically appear for a three minute cameo and send it off on a high note.

Ummm... there's "unlikeable" and then there's "unlikeable".... I mean, at the least, written characters for a medium that is supposed to entertain, engage, satisfy viewers -- characters should at least be fun to dislike. Simply annoying because it's the character's "right" to be annoying is pretty shallow and, well, stupid.
For the record, I came to like Che as the relationship w/Miranda deteriorated and she was depressed. I did, never, believe that Che was so "hot" that her ex-husband would still want to have sex with her... so much of the plot of AJLT just in unbelievable. And there's "unbelievable" and then there's "unbelievable".........

That is some world class gaslighting.

You think the writers changed Miranda? What about Steve?
Not too long ago, Steve was handy around the house and, according to Miranda's reports of having the best sex of her life, pretty darned skillful with other body parts too. But sometime in the years between the "Sex and the City" movie and this show, the writers forgot Steve's role in this fantasy's ecosystem. Steve is the sensible, sensitive mate who evens us out as opposed to the kicked hound dog who waits by the door for his mistress. He returned to us as a hard-of-hearing grampa putting up with his kid loudly banging his girlfriend in the other room, morosely insisting to Carrie that he was fully devoted to the promise of 'til death do us part.
Cut to a couple of episodes ago, with its lingering shot of Steve knocking around the old punchball and launching many admiring headlines celebrating his "revenge bod." It's not as if Eigenberg ever slacked off in maintaining his physique; he also plays a main role in "Chicago Fire."
But that reaction tells us how effective "And Just Like That" has been in propping up the illusion that Steve's testosterone cratered over the years. Steve's biceps were so hypnotic that Miranda's observation to Carrie moments later – "It's the silent agreement Steve and I cosigned," she said of her living situation. "He's not allowed to punch me in the face, and I'm not allowed to take up any more space than the couch" – may not have turned enough sensors red.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | July 24, 2023 1:11 PM |
Nobody's implying there was ever any danger of Steve physically assaulting Miranda. But emotional manipulation counts too.
Miranda is spiky and no-nonsense, so when she throws everything out the window in "And Just Like That" it is entirely contradictory to what we expect of her. Even so, it fits our picture of what would happen if someone who spent their whole life trying to avoid mistakes leaped off a cliff, mainly out of curiosity.
We've grown accustomed to Steve being her harness, holding steady and ensuring a safe return. Their first reconciliation after Steve's transgression was beautiful; also, maybe it was a pause on a ticking time bomb.
But to salvage Miranda, it's time she shed everything preventing her from replenishing her character, including a guy that was always too good for her but ideal for us. "And Just Like That" has the potential to do better by all of them and its audience. So in the spirit of "Widow-Con," let it die so all of us can move on.

I sort of agree with the article. Big was always portrayed as having money and being successful, so it's not crazy that she would have a big inheritance. But, it probably would have been more interesting if she, for whatever reasons (bad investments by big, failure of younger people to take to her work), wasn't rich. I'm not saying make her a poor near 60-something. But someone who had a some financial cushion/savings, but not enough that she could just coast - she had to do something and recreate herself at an older age.

I knowthis has been discussed but it still bugs the shit out of me that none of these women appear to have parents. I know Miranda's mother died but it would be more realistic to have Carrie say "have to go see my mom this weekend" or Charlotte have her parents over to see their grandchildren in an episode. These gals all seem to have been dropped off by storks in NY. As far as I could tell Carrie's mom wasn't even invited to her big wedding from the first movie.

Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) was a gay, gender non-conforming and transvestite street activist organization founded in 1970 by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, subculturally-famous New York City drag queens of color. STAR was a radical political collective that also provided housing and support to homeless LGBT youth and sex workers in Lower Manhattan. Rivera and Johnson were the "mothers" of the household, and funded the organization largely through sex work. STAR is considered by many to be a groundbreaking organization in the queer liberation movement and a model for other organizations.

"Kohler told Carter that although Rivera had not been at the uprising, he hoped that Carter would still portray her as having been there. Another Stonewall veteran, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt, claimed that he wanted to add her "so that young Puerto Rican transgender people on the street would have a role model."[19] When Kohler and Rivera had a discussion over whether Kohler would back Rivera's claims to Carter for the book, Rivera asked Kohler to say that Rivera threw a Molotov cocktail. Kohler responded, "Sylvia, you didn't throw a Molotov cocktail!" Rivera continued to bargain with him, asking if he'd say she threw the first brick. He replied, "Sylvia, you didn't throw a brick." The first bottle? He still refused. Finally Kohler agreed to lie and say Rivera had been there and had at some point thrown a bottle"
Is this where we get the myth a trans person threw the first brick at Stonewall?

Nixon also shares her thoughts on the dissolution of Steve and Miranda as a couple, which was tough not only on viewers but on the people making And Just Like That... “Even within our own cast and crew, there was a lot of anxiety about what happened with Steve and Miranda last season,” Nixon says. “There were actually Team Steve and Team Miranda buttons that people wore. Sara Ramirez once, to torment me, actually took a Team Steve button and put it on.” Speaking of Ramirez: Although Che and Miranda are no longer together, Nixon hints this doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for Ramirez’s tenure on And Just Like That… “Che didn’t come into the show, through Miranda, right? Che is their own person,” Nixon says. “Obviously we’ve never had two main characters date each other before, much less breakup with each other. So, how does that work? I think it’s fun.”
by Anonymous | reply 285 | July 26, 2023 11:40 AM |

I think the test audience response to Che's show was meant to be meta i.e. expressing what the real public felt about Che. I think if Che had been more embraced by us her show would have been a hit on AJLT. They could still have broken up with Miranda even if the show was a hit.

Why the change of heart when they were all so fucking stubborn in the press about S1 and us not getting it? Because HBO brought the hammer down. Follow the money. At this age, when is MPK or SJP or KD going to have another shot at anything marquee? They aren't. It was a future of selling shoes, flipping through old Tom Bianchi books by the pool and attending conventions otherwise. Nixon's the only one with a real future in performing, paradoxically. There was something really off about that lesbian date scene with the woman and her cat. It read as misguided as that previous terrible penis pump scene of past episode. I can't understand why Cynthia Nixon of all people would agree to play such a scene that is so humiliating to a lesbian, even if it is supposed to be comic.
by Anonymous | reply 320 | July 27, 2023 1:47 PM |
If Cynthia is drawing on experience from her own life, imagine the courtship between her and Rojo Caliente!

Carrie must have told the cab driver where to take her and Aidan so him getting out of the car and being shocked at the location seems unbelievable.
by Anonymous | reply 322 | July 27, 2023 2:02 PM |
I thought the idea of the lesbian scene was interesting, and very New York. A lot of fabulous public people live in shitty apartments and are very different in their private lives. But like most everything with the show, the scene was written and executed poorly.

I am so over Charlotte. She's a fucking Karen and nobody notices it? And what the fuck was Miranda eating in that lunch scene? Meringue with a side of ice cream?
It was great to see Aidan again, but that whole scene in the street? How old are these writers? In their teens?

by Anonymous | reply 327 | July 27, 2023 5:12 PM |
There was a scene last season where Carrie met up with a guy for a date... only to tell him that she couldn't go on a date with him. Aidan having second thoughts about going back to Carrie's apartment reminded me of that. People just don't think/behave that way. Part of SATC's appeal was how their lifestyles were a fantasy, but their feelings were relatable. AJLT shat the bed in that regard.
And they give poor LTW some truly terrible dialogue. Nya's character is a dud as well, but at least she got to eat that soufflé.

I'm flabbergasted at the stupidity of the idea that "Rock" made such a splash in the modeling world. She has no "look"; she's just a sloppy teenager, not very tall, with a marshmallow face. Miranda and Che are better apart. I like Miranda trying things with different women, even if she was sort of rude in leaving.
Anthony's bread guys were hot, and the big dick guy was throw away funny.
Plots with the Wexley children seem like spreading things too thin, but whatever.
Charlotte realizing she focuses on everyone but herself is probably a good thing.

I think Ramirez is a talented actress. She has a lovely voice and a likeable quality that I can't define. She lost that playing Che 1.0. Now they've dialled Che back a lot, she transcends the mediocre material. I don't mind the character at all. I think the problem was they were unable to write/show Che as funny so they had to say she was funny, which nobody bought. She was obnoxious in season one and she carried blame for the Miranda/Steve breakup, which a lot of people just didn't like as a storyline idea.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | July 27, 2023 8:32 PM |

By real life standards, Che is average looking. But I guess people don’t want to see that on tv.

I thought the print ad for Rock was believable - it looked very Ralph Lauren and she looked good. At this point in time there is a market for non-traditional models. So Rock being wanted by agencies after the RL shoot doesn't feel like a stretch. I can run with it.

[quote] Okay, how does Carrie say she doesn't have a working number for Aidan when she's getting texts from him? Gramma, do you understand that the number labeled "Aidan" in your phone IS Aidan's number?
Not necessarily. He could have changed his number from the last time she contacted him (which would make sense considering he's moved a few times), but she likely had the same one. So whatever she was calling prior to his text was likely the wrong phone. Also, when his text popped up, it was a phone number, it didn't say "Aidan," so it was clearly not a number she had programmed into her phone.

R382 - In season 3 Carrie ended the relationship with Aidan because she was also seeing Big on the side. in season 4 Carrie convinces Aidan to restart their relationship. He moves into her apartment after purchasing it when her building goes co-op and then proposes. Despite her misgivings, Carrie accepts the proposal and then eventually realizes she's not ready for marriage. Despite discussing her concerns and initially agreeing to give her more time, Aidan soon pressures Carrie for marriage. She realizes this is because he does not trust her, given her past affair with Big. They break up and he moves out.

by Anonymous | reply 428 | July 29, 2023 1:43 PM |
R428 in the early seasons they were pretty realistic about her, she criticized her own nose and felt embarrassed to be walking a runway with "real" models.
There's also the episode where she looks like shit on a magazine cover, farts in bed with Big and some characters like Samantha, Miranda and Aidan occasionally called her out.
However in the later seasons she was reimagined as some sort of goddess. I actually thought Parker did really good work portraying a flawed but realistic person in the early years before she became unassailably "fabulous!"
by Anonymous | reply 429 | July 29, 2023 1:51 PM |
R429, it seemed to coincide with the overemphasis on fashion. I was thinking on that after Miranda's (admittedly fabulous) purple date dress. Could/would Miranda afford that? With a mortgage, a kid to educate, nowhere to live and being a student? But cram her in. Pat Field always dressed Carrie as over the top but it used to be affordably over the top. It's two shows. The early show, which was so unique, and the later show, which was focus group meets clothes horse. I have always said it was MPK that ruined the show. It changed in his reign. After all, he brought us the second movie... if anything proves how clueless he is about this franchise, it was that. Wasn't a one off. Like that Salon (?) piece said years ago, grown up gay men playing with Barbies.

Carrie getting called out for being shitty happened a few times. Samantha called her out for being judgmental when she saw Sam blowing the deliver guy. Miranda told her that Carrie was a needy mess when she was with Big and wasn't going to deal with the aftermath again. Stanford called her out for only talking about herself when he had a new bf. And when Carried tried to guilt Charlotte into giving her down payment money for her apartment, Charlotte told her that she needed to fix her own finances. That's about all I can think of.

by Anonymous | reply 438 | July 29, 2023 2:44 PM |
R436 I can't stand Carrie but in her defense she didn't try to guilt Charlotte into giving her the downpayment, she was furious because when Samantha & Miranda offered to loan her the money and empathized (to Carrie's credit she refused) Charlotte said nothing and turned away. That's why Carrie yelled at her.

Would Carrie give up NYC?
Maybe we'll see her move to Aidan's now $2M Upstate abode. We already know Aidan lives outside of NYC (had to come in for a meeting) and drives a motorcyle (that Belstaff jacket was a symbol for something). And the writers have left her in that tiny apartment all season for some reason.
Carrie ending up living in the country with Aidan and his kids would make sense. Aidan doesn't want NYC memories with her. It would allow her to pack away her life with Big as something special, without feeling she's replacing it. It would place her in the country in a life very similar to the one SJP herself holds dear.

R63 because when her laptop goes blank in SATC season 4 all of her work that is saved on that laptop is now lost. That’s why she’s upset. She lost all her writing, including what she was currently working on.

R264: Cynthia Nixon ran for Governor of New York State to make the point that Cuomo was an awful Governor who was enabling the Republican party in New York State in order to control them AND the Dems. He considered NY his personal fiefdom for life, and unfortunately any legitimate candidate was frightened to run against him because he would have destroyed their careers. He ruthlessly controlled both parties in the state.
Nixon knew this, had no political career to destroy, she knew she would go back to acting afterward, but managed to make the point that it was time for him to go. It was political theater, really, but it served a purpose and I’m grateful to her, it made it that much more evident that he was corrupt and needed to go, so when there were genuinely scandalous reasons to shitcan him, it all happened that much more quickly and happily. And no one misses him.

R425: MPK is the showrunner so he would've had to given the OK to the cameo. I'm not buying the whole we don't know how it happened thing and we wanted it to be a surprise. Even Cynthia when asked about the cameo said "we thought it'd be a fun thing for the 25th anniversary." So MPK and the girls were clearly instrumental in it happening and I personally think they leaked the news on purpose to generate interest and to get people to watch the entire season.

That’s not at all how it played out. She was a joke and everyone knew she was a joke. He was easily re-elected in the general election. He was brought down by forces that have absolutely nothing to do with what Cynthia thought, hoped for or dreamed of.

For a show that y'all hate so much, it's clearly deserving of 3 shit-tastic threads.
I agree with a lot of the sentiments shared here, good and bad. I think the show is worth watching, and will stay with it until the bitter end.
The bread shop scene, where Anthony announces that anyone who's on HGH's has to leave, and they all leave, and then he tells them to leave their uniforms there, is one of the few scenes that remind me of the old SATC. Just silliness and fun.
I really like the Lisa and Nya characters, and wish they could just have their own spinoff, black lady version, of SATC. I feel like black-driven sitcoms are so basic, formulaic, and dull, with no sex appeal, generally speaking. If they could make a fun, sexy, sometimes awkward, emotional, show of four professional black women with sex lives, and standards of how they live, I would love to watch it.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | July 29, 2023 10:25 PM |
I don’t understand the complaints about season 2. I actually think it’s a lot of fun and much much better than season 1.
The characters all feel like older versions of themselves and feel a lot truer to character than they did in season 1.
Miranda was always embarrassing herself. People think this is new. Rewatch the OG show.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | July 29, 2023 10:31 PM |
I agree... 2 is much better than 1 (though what wouldn't be?) They still need to tighten it up a bit. Funnily, Miranda is the most expendable character. I don't say write her out, but you could confine her to a couple of lines at the diner every episode and it would be enough. She's not a loveable fuck up.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | July 29, 2023 10:33 PM |

If we don’t get more of that Miranda …. well, I’m still gonna hate watch.

I agree that the second is better than the first season, and that there and many more moments that feel like the original series (last year there were almost none). The problem is that there is SO much bad that it overshadows the rest. They probably could have made a good show without any of the new characters or trying to be something they are not.

Fashion stylists are unsure about Aidan's military-inspired jacket. Putting him in a heather gray knit shirt was very on-brand, but not sure about the belted military jacket. In it, he reminded me of a bad guy from an “Indiana Jones” flick who forgot what movie he was in. It was almost like he was girding himself for emotional combat, which, I suppose, is fair! He did not look comfortable. Though he did look more bourgeois. but the man who yearns to spend his days upstate with minimal creature comforts while Carrie bakes a pie is not wearing that jacket.

How do you get over the LOVE of your life dying after ALL the endless years spent together and that he was FINALLY her HUSBAND...!!!
I can't imagine running off to an old boyfriend a year after my husband died. But I know people grieve differently. And of course, I am a real person and not a TV character so it's probably not fair for me to compare.

My best friend's parents just got back together after 25 years apart. Both their 2nd spouses died around the same time, they all still live in the same area, and so it seemed appropriate to them to revisit that relationship. When you get older, practicality = romance to some extent.

Last season was about breaking down the settled down lives they created in their late forties. This season is about sharing the embarrassing pitfalls of dating in your fifties. It is interesting to see the beats that are true to their old selves while seeing slight changes in the way they handle them at this stage of their lives. Charlotte’s CBD-fueled freak out was the last of the OC main characters to break out of their molds. It was fun to see how Charlotte realized how pathetic her life had become. It was a lot of things, but seeing LTW’s pity laugh at the Mr. Burton post had to signal to her that she had more to offer creatively and Rock’s refusal to model helped her to do something for herself like having her own They Mitzvah. The bad dates and questioning one’s journey is classic SATC and makes AJLT more enjoyable, IMHO.

"I think that's what happens when we're older, especially after a tragedy like Carrie has suffered," Rottenberg said, referring to the death of Bradshaw's husband Mr. Big. "Let's face it, you have fewer and fewer powerfully strong people in your life. So I believe that she would have reached out to (Shaw)."

Any attractive qualities he possessed were diminished by his neediness. Ironically, this is what Big represented for Carrie (shoe was on the other foot) and if the show was in any way realistic / true to its character arcs she never would have ended up with him.
Even Candace Bushnell has stated that she never envisioned a happy ending for Carrie with Big. But we had to keep the dumb frau viewers happy so....

Special to R469: You’re clearly poor at reading and comprehension. I classified Cynthia Nixon’s run for Governor of NYS as political theater meant to start a discussion of what a tinpot authoritarian Andrew Cuomo had become.
She did it because every serious politician and aspiring politician in New York was afraid to do so. And even journalists were afraid to get on his bad side. Of course she lost by a landslide as she had no qualifications to be Governor.
I never implied her run or comments had anything to do with Cuomo’s eventual legal problems. But she was the first to publicly say the unsayable and it cleared the way for others to speak out about his thuggish behavior, which eventually led to his exit in disgrace.

It’s bizarre to see them acting like they have no other options (other than each other.) These are wealthy, successful people.
Shouldn’t Carrie be dating Justin Trudeau or something?
by Anonymous | reply 537 | August 3, 2023 9:13 AM |
Carrie is late 50s (though looks rougher), self-centered and has sex in her bra.
You think she’s a catch? Even with her money, unless she wants a user… no.
by Anonymous | reply 538 | August 3, 2023 10:59 AM |
I didn't understand the Hamptons dilemma. Carrie arranged to house-share with Seema and now she wants to bring Aidan so Seema is out. Do Carrie and Aidan have to spend all their time together?!
by Anonymous | reply 539 | August 3, 2023 11:00 AM |
R538 - well Aidan has sex in his briefs.
by Anonymous | reply 540 | August 3, 2023 11:01 AM |
Why does the Cantone character have to be dating a much younger, gorgeous guy? I think Cantone looks fine but this kid is out of his league.
Why not a good-looking age appropriate guy? Would have been a great way to explore ageism in the gay community.

And he seemed to be running the bakery alone. Maybe he is after last week's hunk walk-out.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | August 3, 2023 11:04 AM |
Seema trying to slither out of the boutique to avoid Carrie shows her true nature. She comes off as all proud and strong but in reality she is a coward.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | August 3, 2023 11:06 AM |
I didn't realize you could be an intern at 56. Not that Miranda stayed one for long.
by Anonymous | reply 544 | August 3, 2023 11:07 AM |
This ep slightly less bad than last week’s.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | August 3, 2023 11:54 AM |
Last season Samantha was mentioned quite often. This season? Not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 546 | August 3, 2023 12:23 PM |
I think they thought they were moving on.
But then HBO got involved, obviously. MPK and SP obviously had nothing to do with the cameo decision. Davis and Nixon were sent out to tamp down expectations. I wish Rolling Stone would write one of their blow the doors off it articles about the craziness on this show. Behind the scenes is far more interesting than any of the mediocrity they're cranking out at present.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | August 3, 2023 12:25 PM |
Samantha's cameo's on 8/24.
by Anonymous | reply 548 | August 3, 2023 1:42 PM |
what is the point in Carrie saying Big was a big mistake? She still didn't want to marry Aidan back then and she was married to Big for how long?
by Anonymous | reply 549 | August 3, 2023 1:47 PM |
They keep foisting Seema on us as the “New Samantha” but Samantha Jones as played by Kim Cattrall wouldn’t be reacting the way Seema does. Samantha would confront Carrie (as she often did) not slither out
by Anonymous | reply 550 | August 3, 2023 2:18 PM |
Haven't seen the new ep but judging from comments I take it Carrie dumps Seema for the summer? Bitch move. Remember Carrie was always the girl who ditched friends for guys.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | August 3, 2023 3:21 PM |
There's no way in hell the two actual interns wouldn't understand what 30 yrs of practice vs a fresh degree would do for your upward mobility in a lawfirm. They're being depicted as twits, or entitled twats really.
R551 Seema pulled the 'I'm dumping you before I have to be a third wheel and you eventually dump me'

Charlotte and that dress! I kept expecting her to start singing, "I've Written a Letter to Daddy".
by Anonymous | reply 554 | August 3, 2023 3:31 PM |
They probably wouldn’t have gone the “Big was a Big mistake” angle without Chris Noth being cancelled last year. I’m sure SJP is happy to make a clean break.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | August 3, 2023 4:19 PM |
Willy Falk from the OBC of Miss Saigon was the silver daddy neighbor. Lots of positives in this episode. Miranda is getting back to her old self, Che is sooooo much more likable, Charlotte inspired by the full figured bare midriff and realizing she doesn't need to be perfect and Aidan. I love the Carrie/Aidan scenes. The only false note was Anthony and the poet. I can believe Carrie finally realizing Big was all wrong for her because, well, he was.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | August 3, 2023 4:21 PM |
R556
Was he though? They made each other happy( they got their happy ever after until he died)
I’m not sure Aiden and Carrie would have lasted 20 years ago… it can now that Big is truly out of the picture
by Anonymous | reply 557 | August 3, 2023 4:26 PM |
One thing the show does poorly, and has increasingly done ever since MPK and SJP took control, is it fails to acknowledge when things are unexpected. So for instance, they could have had Anthony acknowledge that the gay poet is out of his league, and then had the poet talk about how he’s into daddies and cares more about the mind. Could have even been done effectively. But just like all the ways they pretend Carrie is something no one is actual New York would pretend she is, they just have us believe that this hot young gay guy is so attracted to hot young Anthony that he can’t resist his presence. It’s silly and weakens the show. All of these idiosyncrasies would be interesting if they were talked about rather than ignored.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | August 3, 2023 4:35 PM |
It’s also kind of gross that Carrie, who now has fuck you money only because of Big, would write him off as a mistake.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | August 3, 2023 4:36 PM |
Can we talk about Anastasia's shoulder pads? WTF.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | August 3, 2023 5:11 PM |
Wait. So a show that was built around Carrie's pursuit of, and eventual marriage to, her "soul mate" is now claiming that person was a mistake? WTF?
by Anonymous | reply 561 | August 3, 2023 6:20 PM |
Was Big a big mistake? - YES!!!
by Anonymous | reply 562 | August 3, 2023 6:22 PM |
Do these writers really think that nonbinaries and transgenders would want to work at a pet store?

Well, a lot of fish have male and female reproductive organs.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | August 3, 2023 6:38 PM |
I am so fucking tired of EVERY SINGLE EPISODE needing to explain pronouns.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | August 3, 2023 6:39 PM |
Big was a scumbag. A charming scumbag but still a scumbag. Carrie threw away Aidan who loved and treated her with respect. Wisdom comes with age and, even though it took her a long time, it was nice to hear her admit she made a mistake. I wouldn't mind a happy ending with Carrie and Aidan splitting their time between NYC and Virginia.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | August 3, 2023 7:20 PM |
Aidan tried to control her. He was terrible. Where Big was careless of her, Aidan wanted to Stepford her.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | August 3, 2023 7:33 PM |
The fat aunt from Kimberly Akimbo has a cameo as Charlotte's new boss.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | August 3, 2023 7:36 PM |
Did Carrie explain why she now considers Big a mistake? Didn't season 1 lead us to believe they had been blissfully happy
by Anonymous | reply 569 | August 3, 2023 9:21 PM |
Brady and Lily are possibly fucking in the next episode. Oh God make it stop!
by Anonymous | reply 570 | August 3, 2023 9:28 PM |
R569: I also thought the line was a little intentionally unambiguous. Was Big in general a mistake or was she referring to her affair with Big in season three? This episode was rather...frustrating. The Carrie and Aidan scenes are too cringe and overacted. So is Aidan basically now a casual fuck buddy everytime he comes to New York? Also the ending was a little anti-climatic with Carrie meeting his sons off-screen.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | August 3, 2023 9:42 PM |
I think Sarita does a good job in the role but this push to make Seema the new Samantha is just never going to work. These writers have no idea what to do with LTW and Nya. The writing staff should've just cut those roles and made Seema and Che the diversity characters or better yet just Seema, and they still would've fulfilled the woke/equity checkboxes.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | August 3, 2023 9:48 PM |
I hope Nicole Ari Parker is getting a big fat paycheck because she's a wonderful actress and totally wasted here.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | August 3, 2023 9:50 PM |
I liked this episode a lot. Just worked for me, even with Charlotte's pretty trivial weight loss arc. Still spoke to something we all go through as we age. Aiden and Carrie were really good together. And Seema explaining why she wanted to pull away felt poignant - didn't want a constant reminder the things she didn't achieve in life. But she showed up in the end. Good balance between the primaries and the supporting players. I've said it before - I like Nya. But they don't know what to do with her and she'd often dead weight. Didn't miss her this episode. Two more things. First, the workplace tension between generations was humorous and real-to-life. I wanted Miranda to bitchslap those office cunts. Her boss was absolutely right about her being valuable due to her experience and she can't worry about the other interns. Second, I like Carrie matched with Che as friends more than Che and Miranda as lovers.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | August 3, 2023 10:00 PM |
I’m liking Che without Miranda. The writers have gone out of their way to make them likable.
by Anonymous | reply 575 | August 3, 2023 10:00 PM |
Miranda got over Che real quick.

"I'm a middle aged sexually confused alcoholic going through a divorce" (or something like that).
That made me laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | August 3, 2023 10:07 PM |
56 is not middle aged. How many 112 year olds do you know?
by Anonymous | reply 578 | August 3, 2023 10:20 PM |
You know how "middle aged" is used, R578. Stop trying to start shit. But if you can convince everyone not to use it for 50-somethings, more power to you.
by Anonymous | reply 579 | August 3, 2023 10:23 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 580 | August 3, 2023 10:35 PM |
R576: Che got over Miranda real fast.
by Anonymous | reply 581 | August 3, 2023 10:35 PM |
Yeah the salon scene with Seema and Carrie was the highlight of the episode. I will say though that the political jokes always fall flat whether it's pronouns or being white.
by Anonymous | reply 582 | August 3, 2023 10:39 PM |
R581. I don't think Che was ever that into Miranda.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | August 3, 2023 10:43 PM |
Geez, each episode proves more and more what an awful, self-centered, and delusional narcissist Carrie is. The only character who isn't a worthless pile of human refuse is Seema and even she has her moments of being rubbish.
But, Carrie just proves each week what a shitty friend she is and how little she thinks about other people. It's fitting that she's the main character in a sitcom because Carrie suffers from main character syndrome more than most real life people.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | August 3, 2023 10:51 PM |
R537 and R571 what’s “cringe” is that you don’t understand that “cringe” is a verb, not an adjective. That’s pretty fucking “cringe”.

I don't know if they intentionally light her poorly or if she's finally hit the wall, but Sarita Choudhury has been looking so haggard and old the past couple episodes. Last season she was gorgeous, but it feels like she pissed off the DP because her lighting this year has been less than flattering.
by Anonymous | reply 589 | August 4, 2023 12:51 AM |
R589. Sarita looked like shit in the restaurant scene. The hair and lighting was so unflattering.

I thought she looked terrible in the office scene where her boss tries to pawn his client off onto her. (Terrible scene, and poor John Glover deserves so much better.)

"Anthony, take off my high heels before your father gets home."
That really made me laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 594 | August 4, 2023 1:18 AM |
The 'mistake' wasn't Big. It was Carrie being unwilling to see herself with anyone else and always 'held something back'. Which made her wonder if she wasn't closed off to other men 'seriously ', being the mistake.
It's a Mexican hat dance around her characters 180 from her original arc through to the first season of the reboot, to where the show is now.
It's about as tacky as the way 'Samantha' was 'written out' of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 595 | August 4, 2023 1:31 AM |
Miranda was really hypocritical asking Carrie if she was rushing things with Aidan. Miranda in a heartbeat threw away her family as if it was nothing to be with Che in LA.
by Anonymous | reply 596 | August 4, 2023 1:33 AM |
I was worried that the Human Rights Watch storyline would be first day at Columbia all over again and Miranda would come across as a neurotic white savior lady. Then I remembered her drinking still wasn't under control in season one and later I was relieved the ageism in the workplace story turned out the way it did.
