Some thoughts on Kim Cattrall
I met Kim Cattrall once. We chatted for about ten or fifteen minutes, mostly about the play she was appearing in at the Old Vic in London (Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth). This would have been around 2012 or 2013, I can't recall offhand.
She was much shorter than I expected. I know it's a cliche to say this about actors in general, but in SATC Cattrall always appeared tall and Amazonian, with those sexy broad shoulders and that almost regal bearing, whereas in person she was petite, almost slight. Yet it seemed to me it was all in how she carries herself. I couldn't help thinking just how tiny SJP really must be, since Cattrall in my memory always appeared to tower over her.
Kim had no particular reason to give me the time of day, but she was gracious and unfailingly polite. She struck me as both quite introverted and very earnest about her work.
After we'd talked, it seemed to me that she was one of those people who can appear shy or awkward (not rude, but uncomfortable) in the realm of trivial small talk, but who light up and become fluent and at ease as soon as the conversation turns to a topic of substance which they care about. In her case that day, it was obviously the play.
*Sweet Bird of Youth* is an incredibly dark and unpleasant drama (it makes *A Streetcar Named Desire* look like a comedy) and couldn't have been further from SATC in tone or subject. She spoke about her character with wit and nuance and strong feeling. I came away thinking that she was a much more intense and serious person than I would have expected to meet.
All of that bewitching mix of power and humour and vulnerability that she exudes on screen perhaps flow from just how much she invests of herself. There was a sense, even in that briefest of meetings, that she did nothing by halves. She *cared* about the character. She *cared* to hear how I had experienced the play.
Who am I to judge from one tiny encounter? But my impression ever since then, for what it's worth, is that with all of that introversion, intensity and seriousness probably comes also a vast amount of sensitivity. I felt a bit in awe (starstruck, too, no doubt) and found her terribly interesting and impressive to be around.
By the same token, I also find it is not difficult to imagine such a person having a very difficult time in the film and television industry, and a difficult time working at the centre of a pop culture juggernaut like SATC. The strains and stressors on such a personality type are probably enormous in that context; all that strength of feeling. The other three stars don't strike me as anywhere near as sensitive and complex as Cattrall.
All subjective, these were just my impressions.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 3, 2023 2:05 PM |
Of course Stern has her on now and kisses her ass. When I listened to the show 20 years ago, her name would come up and they would have nonstop horse noises and talk about how ugly she was. Only Artie said that she was hot when younger.

I don’t watch this shit anymore but keep up with the headlines of the threads here and it just looks over the top absurd and gross to me. I don’t know who the lesbian is or why she’s apparently been chosen to be one of the primary characters now, but it seems to me that they forgot the part where their primary demo. for this stupid shot is straight women and gay men. Lots and lots of gay men. But of course, TRANZZZZZZZ has to be shoehorned into everything now and more times than not, that goes hand-in-hand with uncomfortably butch dykes, (because God-forbid a lesbian be portrayed as a more everyday woman). Wish it were cancelled along with Sarah Jessica Parker’s career.

I walked by SJP in the street in Manhattan years ago (when SATC was first on) and was struck by how pretty she was in person. She looked better in person than on TV, I thought.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 3, 2023 4:40 PM |
I don't have a dog in this fight because I actually don't mind SJP. As a person sometimes she seems a bit off with the fairies for my taste on a lot of things. Like most actors she's probably a bit distorted by the gravitational pull of Planet Me, but I think she's generally well intentioned and I like her performance and I like Carrie (when she's not been too Michael Patrick King has had a creative, let's put on a show vision that generally sends the character hurtling towards let them eat cake shallowness.) Certainly there's far more toxic performers who are both loved and loathed here.
But, personally, in the creative field, R38 I get the distinction between an ally and their work. I don't do blind loyalty. By that measure I would also be obliged to support Michael Patrick King and in addition to his creative judgement generally, SATC and AJLT truck in minstrel show versions of gay men that just reinforce stereotypes. And I'm not keen on that. So kinda can't not "malign."

If anything, it's Kim Cattrall who is queer baiting the fuck out of everyone and using gay people to prop up her anemic support levels in her feud with Sarah Jessica Parker. Look at Kim's recent projects. She did a take on gay icon Tammy Faye Bakker in her short lived Fox series. She played a straight mom who hooks up with a black bull dyke in the QAF reboot. Now she is playing the Miranda Priestley character in a non-binary take on The Devil Wears Prada. Now she is coming back for a cameo as Samantha, despite making it clear not even three months ago that the character was beneath her dignity. In order to save face, she is saying she did it for the gay fans.

Imagine if they revisited these characters and they were still straight women, continuing their friendship and lives in their later years. Instead we get this woke mess. Why not just write a different show with new characters if they wanted to check off all of these boxes? This show exemplifies what is wrong with Hollywood today.

Based on her reaction to the hot bisexual Eddie Cahill, as well as her other attitudes, Carrie would more likely be someone who would find pronouns and such exhausting. Carrie would claim to be accepting, but would, in fact, have huge issues with a lot of what's happening today. Her books and old columns would more than likely get her canceled today.
Carrie would have been put on blast on twitter for mass cancellation.

R56 that would have been a better storyline - Carrie and the others are confronted by their "outdated" attitudes and prejudices in 2023 and show them going on a journey to be more open minded in middle age. Much better than just have them turn up fully woke and PC from episode 1.

R65 I mean they are actually castigated for their lack of progressive views and go on some kind of journeys not necessarily towards "wokeness" but realizing that they haven't been the open-minded and inclusive women they portray themselves as.
I was taking it from R56's point that Carrie's old columns would likely receive some pushback in this day and age.

I wrote on a thread ages ago, even before And Just Like That... had been announced, that any SATC reboot should be done in the style of The Brady Bunch movie, transplanting the characters of 2004 directly into the present day. Across town, I couldn't help but wonder: how would four materialistic horny women from the early naughts manage to cope were they to suddenly find themselves in contemporary America, post the financial crash of 2008, post pandemic, in the midst of rising fascism, BLM, and climate collapse? I still think that this is the only genuinely genius creative idea I've had in my life.
But Jesus, fuck: this second season is just dreadful. I'm not a female New Yorker in my 50s, but if I was I'd be embarrassed and enraged that I'm being represented by a bunch of women who collectively seem to have the emotional and professional maturity as well as the social nous of a thirteen year-old. We're all supposed to believe that these are high-achieving, smart and driven women and yet the most basic reasoning skills seems to be beyond them? Nya, a Professor at Columbia Law, is reduced to being no more than a horny drunken teen in order to win back her loser musician husband? Blech.
Two minor things that annoyed me about the last episode: Lisa seems to be a one-percenter but for some reason has to edit her celebrated documentaries in her fucking bedroom?! And Carrie is recording her audio book from a PDF of the print version? The paginations and formatting for recording audiobooks are completely different to the books you buy in a shop. I think this is why I find the materialism and the gratuitous display of wealth in And Just Like That... to be so fucking obscene, because none of it is believable.

Just want to jump in here as a doc filmmaker. There could be many reasons why Lisa was working in that specific way when we saw her. She could have been reviewing a cut to a sequence her editor had made. Or she could be making changes to a cut that was online because she needed to be home for the kids (or to get ready to go to the MET gala) and there was a deadline so she was trying to multi-task. it's so much easier these days to do post online and from several places, sharing a cut between the post team. That didn't bump me as much as how everyone seems to have heard of her when she's barely done anything. Even New Yorkers would be hard-pressed to know the names of current documentarians who aren't Michael Moore and Ken Burns.
I can't comment on your point about the audiobook recording, but I would love for you to expand upon it. What does a script for an audiobook recording look like? Thanks.

I don't begrudge actors having a cash cow that let's them do other stuff comfortably. If Nixon has to play Miranda to do plays, indie roles, or other less lucrative parts, then good for her.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 4, 2023 5:09 PM |
I agree that the identity roles validations, the personal-is-the-political plot, the whole "give the marginalized their due" vibe of this most recent version of SATC is exactly in alignment with Nixon's values and politics. More than just $$, I think Nixon is happy to play this new version of the character she developed.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | July 4, 2023 5:36 PM |
I agree R88 and think that’s a really good point. There aren’t a lot of roles out there for women nearing 60. Everything usually goes to a few prestige actresses in that age group.

R91, I think she's a very good actress. Sometimes she overuses mannerisms--this thread sent me back to watch the original SATC, of which I wasn't a regular watcher in its heyday, and I thought she was great in the first season, especially the first few episodes. Then her mouth-acting, especially her habit of giving herself all kinds of bits of business while eating (contemplatively pulling at a french fry with her teeth, talking with her mouth open and some food in her cheek) started getting really annoying. But in those first few episodes, I guess before she settled into being Miranda, her performances were kind of inventive and nuanced. I've thought she was good in other things, too, though I can't remember them. Her cousin/aunt/whatever in "The Gilded Age" was OK.

IIRC, this was objectively pointed out in “The Devil’s Candy” (1991). When I read that observation, whatever book it was in, I thought, “Hmmm, they’re right,” followed by, “That’s a nice thing to have said about you!”

As with too many actors and their opinions, there's so much Cynthia Nixon out there it could kind of get in the way of her performance for me (which is my problem with a lot of over-publicized actors - Jolie, Cruise, etc. etc.) I am too aware I'm watching an actor act. After the abortion of S1 AJLT I couldn't imagine watching CN disappear into Gilded Age, but she did. She transcended her personal visibility and brought a semi-dotty, secretly sensible spinster to life. That character was quite endearing and she didn't have much to work with in terms either of script or screen time.
She's a very good actress, she just talks an awful lot (and for me, too fucking much.)

It must be doubly damning for her that with all that insight and talent that the only things most people remember her for, including me, are sniffing jockstraps in Porky's and howling like a dog when fucked, playing a mannequin and then a middle-aged uber slut.

[quote]As with many celebs on DL, the stories of him being a miserable asshole are legion on DL. He was not a nice or likable person by all DL accounts. The fact that he wasn't gay is merely a small side note in an otherwise long littany of terrible stories about him.
Well for some first hand DL gossip. Way back in the day of AOL chatrooms Willie contacted me to hookup back before he was on SATC. I was a young 20 something living in the village and whenever he would travel to NYC he would stay at the Soho Grand. So I wouldn't say he was 100% straight for sure. He even sent pics and this is back in the day when you basically had to go to Kinkos to scan and upload your photos onto a computer. He wasn't exactly the nicest person even when no one even knew who he was. He was very much the "are you gonna do it now or what?" type. And if you weren't available communication stopped until the next time. He said he was an actor, and then I saw him on SATC. What season did he start? It wasn't the first I don't think.
I actually was a PA on the pilot episode of SATC that Susan Seidelman directed. The offices were in Chelsea Market. I started before any of the ladies except SJP were cast. Darren Star had his offices there as well. I would print up scripts and call sheets and make sure everyone got their updated versions. I asked to go to location to see a shoot and I ended up going to the scene in the first episode where Kim was on a date or something, or meeting some rich guy at a club or bar. That was shot in the NEXT model management building down on Broome. I did that the same summer I worked for casting director Ilene Starger, summer of 1996 I think. It was a star studded summer. The same summer I found out Taye Diggs (fresh off of Rent) is a dick too and chatted up Scarlett Johansson's mom (fresh off of the Horse Whisperer) in the office while she auditioned. They were casting at the time what was called The Magic Hour which became Twilight with Susan Sarandon and Paul Newman. They were looking for the character of Mel which went to a relatively unknown Reese Witherspoon at the time. I remember the big joke one day was some girl named Jennifer Lopez whose top credit was Selena at the time was submitted to play this very white girl part. It was very much "why in the world were agent submit her, they are really pushing this chick." That job made me nervous as fuck because I didn't know who any of the very important people calling were and I'd get into trouble. I would be like, "Someone named Scott Rudin is calling..."
Anyway Willie wasn't 100% straight although he was a Top. And other Z-List actors I chatted up about their bi-curiosity are Tom Irwin - the dad from My So Called Life - who liked getting super stoned and sexting and Roger Bart who I met and had a gorgeous thick cock he liked getting sucked on. He liked black boys. I didn't bottom, but that seemed to be his jam on the side. He came to my place once and I went to his on 72nd off of Broadway.

Stanford was an awful character and the girls all treated him like the joke he let himself be. He was in the first season, he was the agent for the model in the second episode.
How did "the girls" feel about AJLT being completely shut out for awards? SATC was consistently nominated for all the TV awards throughout it's run. I guess they just don't "get it" with AJLT?

I read a couple posts after today dropped and off the top thought to myself: it's not that bad as episodes go. It just ended and as I got up off the couch said: God, that was a horrible episode.
Lousy, lousy writing. So much clunky, expositional, strained dialogue.
Some random observations:
Steve's still hot but when he speaks, sometimes I get Miranda.
The cum on my tits scene was so eeeeeww.... but the July 4th line later was oddly sweet.
The table was nice, felt like the old show. One of the few decent moments in the episode.
Why was the urologist talking with his mouth full? Was that supposed to be funny?
The obnoxious Che of old was back... the ick factor in the scenes between those two is so high.
And thank God something aborted what would have been the ugliest threeway in all television history. Perhaps world history. I'm still recovering.
What a piece of shit episode.

I still think the unsalvageable problem is Che. You already lost all Samantha storylines, which were always strong. When you also lose Miranda to this nonsense, you’re left with two massive holes in what the show always was. If you had these same exact Carrie and Charlotte plots, but with the Miranda and Samantha of old also thrown in the mix, the show would probably still work. Sadly that’s not the case, and so it doesn’t work.

She was in the end credits this week, so maybe she was cut out. Didn't miss her in the least.

Rich Carrie is dull. Part of her appeal was her scrappiness. 1 percent Carrie does not work.
OMG - Che and Miranda have zero chemistry. Their scenes are...obnoxious.
The henpecked rich hubby of Lisa Todd Wexley needs to be put out of his misery.
Did Nya's storyline just fizzle out? Oh well.
Seeing this trainwreck makes me realize how much Samantha/Cattrall really brought to the show. This has many shades of Golden Palace. Without Bea Arthur, it didn't work. Same here.

Okay, I call bullshit on two LTW things from yesterday.
1- I highly doubt she would not have kept track of the RSVPs or at least asked her husband- how many people have said yes so I can tell the restaurant how much food to prepare.
2- Why doesn't LTW, a rich, successful, well-known and incredibly busy person, not have an assistant? I know people who don't do 1/3 of the shit she does and who don't have kids who have assistants.
God, I hate these writers.

I’ve lived on the Upper East Side, west of Lex, for nearly twenty years. Not only do all kinds use cabs, R252, but Park Avenue in the 60s-90s (i.e. rich Lenox Hill and Carnegie Hill) is one of the busiest spots for cabs, many of them hailed by the doormen for their tenants.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | July 8, 2023 3:22 AM |
[quote] many of them hailed by the doormen for their tenants.
And that's what made no sense about LTW's husband trying and failing to flag down a taxi. They would for sure live in a building where the doorman does that for residences.
Them not checking the RSVPs to their party also made no sense. They mentioned several times they had food for 31 people. How did they come up with the number 31 if they had never bothered to see who was actually attending?

I didn’t understand the therapy scene. Steve, Brady and Miranda all go family therapy so Brady can talk about the breakup with his girlfriend, but not her new lesbianism and the breakup of the marriage? Christ, that sounds mortifying. Wealthy people are fucking wild. I’m so glad I was raised by loving but poor and benignly neglectful parents.
The extreme wealth of everybody is what makes it the series so fucking weird and dull. This was the problem with the Wexleys’ RSVP nonsense: not only it didn’t make sense as a narrative turn, but dramatically it just didn’t seem fucking matter. Beyond the mother having reason to sit alone at the far end of the table, in terms of plot there were no repercussions. All the expense of that wasted champagne and lobster (champagne and fucking lobster!), shrugged off as a minor inconvenience.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | July 8, 2023 9:57 AM |
R267, Nya seems to be of average financial security for her age. I agree the wealth is strange, but it seems like a natural outgrowth of the careers and men they’ve chosen.
That’s why Carrie is still acting like a poor bitch. She never saw Big’s money as her own. I think that’s why she’s married to her smaller apartment and was very surprised by Enid’s investment request. While it is surprising that the three of them are all of above average wealth, their friend circle makes sense.
In Harry, Charlotte chose a successful attorney with a Hamptons home twenty years ago and she brought her own home with crazy equity to the marriage. His wealth compounded. As a result, Charlotte would never send her kids to public school and happened to find a fellow child-centric control freak to befriend in LTW.
Miranda owns a home in Brooklyn she likely got on the cheap while Steve owns a bar that has survived this long with NYC rent skyrocketing. Miranda seems like a responsible money manager enjoying a high law salary. Again, that shit compounds. That said, she is likely the least rich of the three.
Carrie certainly has multiple income streams from her books and related activities. Big brought insane wealth to the marriage and taught Carrie to be better at investment. Her own money is considerable, but his money puts her in a new realm. The value of her home attracted a wealthy realtor in Seema. Bitsy is the byproduct of her neighborhood and social status. She does seem to enjoy mentoring which connects her to the up and comers around her.
Finally, none of the three seem to have any familial obligation that would zap their money. And of course, when you live and earn in an expensive city, it doesn’t seem expensive to solve poor people problems in the Midwest when required.
It is weird that nobody has a heroin or gambling problem, but that’s good luck. Overall, they all should be wealthier than they were decades ago and they’ve surrounded themselves with accomplished people. There isn’t a trust funder among them.

You guys are missing the point. A black man who has as much money as this character does and transporting two kids in Manhattan would not be squeezing in the back of a cab. He would have an Uber waiting for him in this day and age.
Having him hail a cab is about as out of date as having a gay man who is seen working 10 minutes a season running a "successful" bread delivery service using scantily clad Muscle Marys. It's not 2003 anymore.
John Melfi is still a producer on this show. He used to work out at David Barton 23rd St. all the time. There was a brooding straight trainer there, Frank Acosta, who went on to grow a big Milk Delivery business. He was withdrawn and he'd kinda bully his clients, which the gays young and old seemed to love - like being pushed around by the high school jock. I wonder if Melfi got the bread idea from his Milk business.

R268. Carrie's cash streams do not bring in much. Unless they make a television series and maybe a couple of movies derived from her book, that would be bringing in bupkis. (Ask Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo how long their cash stream lasted. And nothing on the show indicates Carrie's book have achieved anything near that level of sales.)
Her main income is from her husband's estate. She could stop working and still maintain her lifestyle.
The show always had some level of money-fantasy. But now it is off the charts. You have three main characters who do not seem to have any need to work. A few others making big money from professions that in real life earn nothing. (I actually know two award-winning "documentary filmmakers" who live off their husbands money, not the $10K to 40K their work brings in depending on the year.)

R268 I agree R278. Carrie might have made enough to live on but not a huge annual income from her books. Season 5 & 6 she had more money from the sale of her book (but didn't show us paying back Charlotte).
No way would she have bothered to learn about investment from Big nor would he have troubled to 'teach' her.
Charlotte is a total trust fund nepo baby. While she may have been good at her job, managing a NY gallery in her late 20s smacks of family connections. And she could afford not to work even after her divorce.
Samantha is the one I could see making big bucks as her status in PR grew, and she was business minded enough to invest. In season one she was even shopping around for an investment property (and fucking the realtor).
I agree they are now so rich it makes it hard to relate to them. They should put Miranda back to work and have Charlotte get a job too.

[quote] You guys are missing the point. A black man who has as much money as this character does and transporting two kids in Manhattan would not be squeezing in the back of a cab. He would have an Uber waiting for him in this day and age.
Not to beat a dead horse, but the last time I tried to get an Uber in Manhattan (because it was pissing down rain, I was going to a show, and to stand in the street to hope an empty taxi would happen why was pure delirium), I tried ordering an Uber. I was basically told on the app where to stand and wait for them- and it was across the street in a place with no shelter from the rain.
I did some further research on it later that night and found that you cannot necessarily request an Uber in NYC and have it pick you up where you stand. There are pickup spots, like in Vegas. And you don't have Ubers "wait" for you. Those are called chauffeured town cars. Ubers are somewhat a pain in the ass in NYC and are just as expensive as cabs. I totally bought that Herbert would be hailing a cab. However, what does surprise me is that someone of their wealth extremity actually DOESN'T have a car and driver on hand. FFS, Seema has one. But my guess is that the whole reason they didn't write one for them was so they could be cutting edge and show the poor downtrodden black man still experiencing racism in NYC. HOW SHOCKING!

While I find the wealth ruins the show and the Carrie character in particular, I don’t find it that far fetched for who these women are. If you are upper middle class, which all of them seem to have been at the start, and survive in Manhattan (or a good Brooklyn neighborhood) for over thirty years, well into your fifties, then you tend to accumulate a little wealth. Especially for women who marry successful husbands. It’s just such a hard fucking city that if you weren’t increasing your finances or had the prospect of doing so, you probably would have gotten out already. But again, I’m only speaking for this very limited subset. I’m well aware there are women in their fifties all over the five boroughs who are destitute.

Part of the reason the plots have been so contrived is that the wealth pulls the characters away from story situations. No work issues impacting their personal lives. No real estate issues. Nothing endangers their lifestyle. Fewer activates that bring them in touch with other characters and/or sexual partners.
Even potential plots like Carries refusal to do the vaginal ad mean little. The lost of podcast income does not mean Carrie needs to find a new job fast, gets behind on rent, has to call an old boyfriend for help getting work, meets a man on the unemployment line but has no idea what hs job was, etc.
So now its "ooops I forgot to order the cake, when did I stop ejaculating, can I get someone to mention my book on her listserv." That last one makes no sense in the 2020s.
Maybe next Carrie will get her toe stuck in the bathtub spigot, Charlotte hires a plumber secretly so her husband does not find out she accidentally dropped her wedding ring down the drain so when Evan walks in he thinks she is cheating, Miranda leaves Che's lucky umbrella in a restaurant, but can't remember which one.

Something that MPK and SJP would never admit with the reemergence of the Aiden character is the last time those characters dated was early 2001.
The original twin towers stood.
There were no smart phones and social media. Carrie was JUST learning to email, which was a big plot point for them reconnecting to date a second time.
The world has changed and some people are better left in the past

[quote] Nothing endangers their lifestyle.
That was, to me, the biggest issue with the second movie, which came out early in the financial crisis. A logical plot line would have seen Big losing his money and he and Carrie being forced to downsize, reevaluate their lifestyle, etc. Instead, we were forced to sit through Carrie deciding between Big and Aidan for the millionth time. Worse, as people all over the country were losing their jobs and struggling to keep their heads above water, the movie decided it was a great time to show the women jetting off to Abu Dhabi and getting chauffeured around in Maybachs. Who wanted to see that in 2010?

Even if no match for Big’s millions, there’s every reason to believe Carrie would be pulling in some respectable income from her books. At this point she’s supposedly written like five of them, so her advance could be in the quarter million or more territory. And they are presumably successful, so a decent royalty every year from each one. Far more believable than when they used to have her living alone and wearing only designer clothes off a minor columnist’s salary.

R302 That's a great idea: picture Carrie watching four actresses about 30 years younger than she playing out some scene in the first season of SATC.

Continuity doesn’t matter. If they want Aidan’s chair back they’ll bring it back claiming it was either there all along or that she kept it in storage

Miranda is still always beside herself. Totally anguished and unable to impose herself in any way. She wanted to go off on Brady when he said he wasn't going to college, and the Miranda I know would have. But, apparently she's SO insecure due to her midlife shift that she can't speak for herself in any capacity anymore. They better at least be doing all of this only for a light to go off, and Miranda finds herself again and stops taking shit from Brady, Che, and others.

Miranda lost that right (as far as Steve and Brady are concerned) when she abandoned them to be with cliCHE. Also, I read in one of the links in one of these threads that Steve reads her the riot act over it in possibly episode 6.

[quote]At this point she’s supposedly written like five of them, so her advance could be in the quarter million or more territory. And they are presumably successful, so a decent royalty every year from each one. Far more believable than when they used to have her living alone and wearing only designer clothes off a minor columnist’s salary.
There was a report that recently came out, and I am not sure if it is just NYC, but people said to feel financially secure they need to make 233k - every year. She has written five books, in 25 years I guess.
BTW, that "Feel Better" shoe splurge at Bergdorf Goodman she did was at least $23,000 in shoes. She bought $23,000 in shoes to feel better.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | July 10, 2023 9:04 AM |
I’ll take Steve’s jizz that Miranda doesn’t want anymore (and evidently never liked in the first place).
by Anonymous | reply 344 | July 10, 2023 9:13 AM |
I equate Carrie's income from her column and books to Pauline Kael. Pauline published collections of her reviews that had appeared in a weekly magazine the same as Carrie's columns had appeared in a newspaper. I doubt neither earned the writer's great income and, even with the salary earned from their employers, would not have been enough to live on. especially in NYC. Thus they added to by getting other jobs or marrying rich men. I must have missed the part of the Bible that says that Carrie became a big fiction seller like Jackie Collins.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | July 10, 2023 9:36 AM |
Please retract that post…don’t ever compare Carrie, much less her creator Bushnell, to Pauline Kael. TIA.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | July 10, 2023 9:42 AM |
The AJLT conceit that seems most wrong is not showing the Botox, surgeries, and diet changes that come with middle age for women in this little pocket of wealthy NY. Keeping a body to its youthful size and shape is a major fight. The friends would be talking about this stuff and would be struggling with sags/bags and what was possible to change, how public or private to be about cosmetic procedures, and getting judged no matter what they do. I’d also love to see these women struggle with suddenly being more “invisible” in public, because even svelte, rich, fashionable 50 somethings experience that.
The end of the previous episode where a bunch of Aussie rugby players invite themselves to chat with these older ladies WOULD NOT HAPPEN. Most likely the guys would be asking the old women to shove over so they could invite younger ladies to the shared table! Professional rugby players are aged in their 20s and would not be interested in women in their 50s. It would be interesting to witness that and see how the ladies responded.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | July 10, 2023 3:30 PM |
I think Miranda had a charley horse… only it’s in her brain…as that is the only thing that makes sense for the AJLT storyline

R345 really good point. Books sales earn much less than most people think (unless you are one of those mega-selling writers). Even relatively popular writers like Jeffrey Eugenides and Gary Shteyngart cannot live exclusively off of their writing.
Pauline Kael had ongoing money problems (although to be fair, it was because William Shawn only had her write for six month out of the year).

Yes, the dream world where fledgling jewelry 20 something yo designers have huge apartments in the west village and walk around in $2500 Bergdorf Goodman bombers. R349 - didn't SJP have a facial wart in season 1 of SATC?
by Anonymous | reply 362 | July 11, 2023 1:20 PM |
This new series should be named as “The frisky millionaires”. It looks like the lines and plots have been written by 20 something who fantasize how older rich people live. Everything drips of conspicuous consumption: it looks like an infomercial for a Dubai hotel. The women are overdone, overdressed, over coiffed, too much jewelry and everything. The interiors are too perfect, the New York restaurants are more spacious than anything I’ve ever seen…
by Anonymous | reply 363 | July 11, 2023 1:49 PM |
The ageism was apparent in the original series and has gotten even worse with this series. Samantha was in her 40s and treated like a dried up prune, such as when she had to wear reading glasses, or thought she was in menopause....no wonder Kim didn't want to come back to this, imagine how she would be treated now in her late 60s.
by Anonymous | reply 364 | July 11, 2023 1:53 PM |
Well Samantha's menopause storyline in the second movie was pretty humiliating. Kim just cashed the check and kept quiet on that one.

R366 - The ageism displayed by Carrie and Seema at the thought of Carrie attending Enid's event and possibly being involved with the magazine. I found it so immature and typical Carrie. She showed zero sorority, compassion or even respect for older women.

The women at Enid’s gathering should have been inspiring—but that’s impossible to Forever 30 Carrie.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | July 11, 2023 4:56 PM |
Miranda and Che are super annoying but it's the only meaningful story arc - how they navigate this, will they stay together; how Miranda reconciles or doesn't with Brady and Steve. Fine, everybody is rich and doesn't have to worry about money (which is always a good foundation for creating stories as money effects work and home and other opportunities), but give them a concrete arc - some substantive issue they need to deal with.
by Anonymous | reply 372 | July 11, 2023 5:05 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 374 | July 11, 2023 6:46 PM |
As someone pointed out at the time, Carrie couldn't have her hip replaced because of wear and tear or 40 years of stilettos but rather a "genetic condition".
by Anonymous | reply 375 | July 11, 2023 6:59 PM |
Carrie is one of the most self-centered TV characters of all time. You would not be friends with this woman. It makes me question how much of that is the real SJP. I can’t imagine having so much creative control of the show and making my character so, well, Carrie.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | July 11, 2023 7:17 PM |
But she was always self-centered and yet I still generally enjoyed SATC. AJLT's shortcomings for me are more about poor writing than unlikeable characters.
by Anonymous | reply 377 | July 11, 2023 7:22 PM |
Agreed. R377. I would argue that them not aging up the Carrie character is part of that poor writing. Her self-centeredness could be cute at 35. At nearly sixty, it looks silly.
by Anonymous | reply 378 | July 11, 2023 7:30 PM |
R378 This is the one area where that awful "Girls" did better than SATC.
They were actually willing to have characters call each other on their toxic selfishness. When a person is a bad friend, the answer isn't another sidewalk brunch or shoe-shopping montage. The answer is her other friends calling her on it and saying "Grow the fuck up, foot-face!"
by Anonymous | reply 379 | July 11, 2023 8:31 PM |
R377 The character became so treacly, contrived and unwatchable with the shorter hair in season 5. It's a shame, as it was a great haircut that looked good on her. I believe that the characters evolution may have had something to do with how much input SJP had regarding her 'character'.
by Anonymous | reply 380 | July 11, 2023 9:25 PM |
SJP's shorter hair looked good when she didn't perm it. I thought she looked terrific in the last ep of S4 when she went for that "last date" with Big and Miranda's waters broke over her shoes.

I just caught up on the last two episodes. Whew. Way too much to comment on but I’m wondering if the MILF list story line began life in the aborted 3rd movie, maybe as part of the Brady sexting Samantha plot. I can’t believe anyone in 2023 could come up with that scene of the moms giving lascivious looks to an underage student and thinking it was okay. Wouldn’t have been okay 10 years ago either but things were a lot less woke then

From the staging, to the yellow lighting, to the rapid-fire back-and-forth, it all screams “Samantha Jones”—especially later on, when Seema discovers that her good-natured tolerance of this schmuck’s penis pump has apparently not earned her the privilege of being able to use her vibrator. “Sir,” she asks, “do you seriously have the balls to say something about my device when I wake up to your freshly washed penis pump drying in my dish rack?”

Good thing Cynthia realized it was high time to throw that out the window.

Why did they need a stand in for Rock on the trampoline? Is the actress that uncoordinated?
by Anonymous | reply 452 | July 14, 2023 11:42 AM |
Standard practice for stunt work. If the actress was injured they would not be able to work with her again until she was recovered.

by Anonymous | reply 461 | July 14, 2023 2:32 PM |
The numbers are likely decent because of all the hate watching.
But the buzz is terrible. And now embarrassing that something so high profile, which received awards attention for its original show, gets no buzz aside from the Razzies.
The smart move would be to bring in real writers but it seems certain MPK leads this to the very end (until the last shovelful of dirt lands on its casket).

“We were very disappointed that the secret leaked of Kim’s upcoming appearance. We so hoped it was something people wouldn’t know about until they saw the episode and that it would be a fun surprise as they were watching. I worry that with all the build-up people are going to wonder what all the fuss was about. It’s important to know that it is a very brief, very small cameo.”
by Anonymous | reply 463 | July 14, 2023 3:03 PM |
From a viewership pov it makes sense to leak Samantha's appearance, however brief. Otherwise if people found out afterwards they probably just watch it on YouTube.
I'd find it a little funny if Kim nabbed a Guest Emmy nomination for this, or if the YouTube clip of her cameo gets more viewers than the show.
by Anonymous | reply 464 | July 14, 2023 3:11 PM |
I do think Kim is coming on to announce that Samantha‘s cancer has returned, and if it does continue, the specter of Samantha will not be around. I did listen to the official podcast, and they were pretty honest about their shock that people did not embrace Chez, which led to that focus group scene.

R465 Although I agree with the consensus that this series has not only jumped the shark, it's killed the shark, grilled it, and put the pieces of burnt fish up their noses....
... however, the idea of a focus group analyzing/reacting to a character in way that AJLT's viewership has also reacted (the we-hate-Che brigade) is pretty meta, pretty amusing.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | July 14, 2023 3:57 PM |
R367 I don’t know why lesbian wasn’t enough. Why nonbinary? It seems redundant to Rock. Also, why famous not funny stand up? All that gets in the way of Miranda coming out. And putting up w an almost 50 yr old playing fucking video games in a room full of noisy people at 330 am? In what world would Miranda, nearly 60, put up w that?
by Anonymous | reply 469 | July 14, 2023 4:00 PM |
Season 3: Samantha returns and abducts Miranda and takes her to a clinic where deprogrammers work to undo the damage.
Come to find out, Che was part of a dastardly plot to destabilize Miranda’s law firm. Miranda attended one of Che’s comedy concerts where she was hypnotized and directed to become incredibly annoying. In retrospect, Charlotte and Carrie are shocked they didn’t figure it out themselves, only they were too preoccupied with themselves (shocker).
Miranda makes a full recovery but exacts her revenge, brutally killing Che at an event to honor Carrie, who has been named People’s Most Beautiful Person. Carrie is furious at Miranda. How dare you upstage me?

I was in a hurry this morning and didn't get to finish. As I said, boring. None of the storylines are interesting and none of them have the same "fun" the OG did. Even S1 of this mess was better than the Che and Miranda show. Kids on these types of shows are best kept in the background and don't need entire plot lines revolving around them. This is not a family sitcom. I think one butch lesbian pretending to be non-binary is plenty. We don't need the baby dyke too. Charlotte is ridiculous and has become so saccharine she's nauseating with her little full-skirted Mrs. Cleaver dresses and distracting surgery. Sometimes it sounds like she's lisping or her speech is off from the blown up lips and fillers.
Something needs to happen soon. Dump Che and have Miranda go to some lez bars and have lesbian dating drama for awhile. Carrie needs a job. Charlotte should have been a widow trying to find dates in 2023. I'd rather hate watch an awful show than a boring AND awful show.
by Anonymous | reply 477 | July 14, 2023 6:01 PM |
SATC was a light, breezy 25-minute show. These eps are 12-19 minutes longer.
That alters the rhythm. Hard to take (what’s supposed to be) a comedy and add that much filler and expect it to feel the same or… good. So they’re dropping in unnecessary characters no one cares about.
SMH.

R473: They wanted Samantha back for the 25th anniversary so they probably offered her $3 million for the cameo. I think there will be a season 3. The Kim cameo and the Aidan storyline really having me thinking this could be it. Perhaps they wrap it up with Carrie and Aidan living happily ever after and Samantha coming back for a proper goodbye. If it does get renewed, I think it will be for only one more season for sure.
by Anonymous | reply 511 | July 15, 2023 5:43 PM |
My main problem with this show is that it's simply not funny. Candice Bergen has been absent from the series for too long and the Enid story just fell flat. Also, this week the whole bit with Harry and Charlotte dressing up as The Americans was just painful and unfunny. The token characters are not three dimensional and the writers simply can't weave them into the story in a meaningful way. Change is good and I like that the legacy characters are drastically different but the problem is they're all now so obnoxious and annoying.
by Anonymous | reply 512 | July 15, 2023 5:53 PM |
Enid was always a guest star. She always just came and went. And her story didn’t fall flat at all to me. I enjoyed the episode. Start stating your opinions as such, r512. Your opinion isn’t a fact. Now run along and go watch Disney channel or something.
by Anonymous | reply 513 | July 15, 2023 5:55 PM |
r512 change is real life. It is not about whether change is good or bad. Change is inevitable regardless of whether it is good or bad. No one stays the same over the course of 20-25 years, and if you do that just shows you're stunted. Some things will always be the same for people but a lot of other things change. These are not women in their early 30s-40s anymore. They are mid 50s creeping toward 60 now. People who expect to see the same thing they saw 25 years ago are silly and clearly do not live a real life in the real world, because I can assure you that most 56 year old women are not the same as they were when they were 30.
by Anonymous | reply 514 | July 15, 2023 5:59 PM |

R517 thank you. I said this on the season one threads. Like I said, I’m almost certain the poster and his sock accounts never watched the OG show because most of what they say isn’t accurate. Carrie was very obnoxious and selfish and annoying in the OG series. Miranda was always neurotic and sarcastic. Charlotte was always a frau and prisspot obsessed with status, wealth, and appearance, as well as always longing to be married and a mother.
These are the same characters only older versions of them.

I actually think the first movie was decent (if unnecessary). Especially the Miranda/Steve plot and Samantha being true to her nature.
The second movie was completely without purpose and saying "we made it for the fans" is utterly insulting. It's a cash grab and I fully respect Kim for saying outright she did the movies to finance her old age.

Thinking about SATC I couldn't help but wonder, did Kristin have a no-nudity clause too? That shot of her nips whilst pleasuring herself was accidental camera angles that got left in. Her boob flash in season 5 was the only time she knowingly showed her titular area to a paying HBO audience. Cynthia on the other hand had almost as much nudity as Kim, despite lack of audience demand.

R552 Nudity is never just left in. It’s all a negotiation between actor and director, with the assistance of an intimacy coordinator. Exact nudity points are specified in the actor’s contract. It’s madness to think that Kristin Davis got her tits out, the camera accidentally picked it up, the editor and producers left it in and everyone just shrugged. That’s not how it works.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | July 16, 2023 4:50 AM |
R554 they didn't have intimacy coordinators 25 years ago and I've read Kristin comment that the scene wasn't intended to show so much but she was fine with it. Don't try to rewrite history

Honestly there are just too many people in this series and everyone has to be a caricature to be at all memorable. And the storylines in each episode are too quick to even register in order to cram them all in. And some of them are just so silly. For instance, does anyone ever really care about the comptroller in an election enough to be scandalized by his wife dancing at a Halloween party? Can anyone even name their local comptroller? Is the show really going to have that be their storyline now?
by Anonymous | reply 564 | July 16, 2023 3:52 PM |
is this Cynthia or MPK: I noticed in this latest episode the Mickey Mouse music telling us when something was meant to be cute or funny.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | July 16, 2023 3:54 PM |
I found the whole Carrie plot line ridiculous this week. First of all the cyclist didn’t even try to slow down before he hit her and in an urban bike lane you have to be crazy to go full speed and not use your brakes. I did think she would offer to pay for his urgent care bill when his card was declined, which was strange that she didn’t because she acted so culpable for the whole thing.

The writing is sloppy. It's not character driven, it's diversity driven

Why was Harry wearing the Americans wig at that trampoline photo shoot? Stupid stupid stupid.

The writing is terrible. The show would be far better if the focus was on the main characters trying to deal with the fact that they aren't the young, hip women they were 25 years ago and was more "self aware." The ONLY scene that I have enjoyed was in the most recent episode --- The focus group for Che's new show trashed the character (much like the viewer reaction has been to Che) with Che and Miranda being clueless that she was so disliked. I thought it worked because it was honest. The show was acknowledging it knew the viewers aren't accepting Che. Hopefully, the next episode will include Che's last scene --- She tells Miranda that she recognizes her comic career has a limited shelf life and decides to make a big change --- Moving on from show business, NYC and Miranda to try something new in Washington State.
I think they need to scale back on the new, politically correct additions. Maybe keep Seema as she has passable substitute for Samantha; reduce Lisa Todd Wexley and her husband to recurring characters occasionally appearing with Harry and Charlotte; and ditching Nya the professor all together.

Every time Nya sits down with the other three women to have lunch or drinks, she sticks out like a sore thumb (and not because of her race). People don't make friends that readily at that age, they just don't. And they certainly don't welcome a newcomer into a very tight, very private inner circle friendship such as the one Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda share. Even Anthony feels awkward in the fourth chair, and he's known them way longer and closer than any of the newbies. But he can at least joke about sex the way Samantha did. Nya brings zilch to the table and looks as baffled as to why she's there as we do. Stop auditioning these peripheral characters for the vacant chair and start developing them more as people we might give a shit about.

R570. But I do believe that Seema would become fast friends with Carrie and the other two and she fits right in at the table. She's the only interesting new character.

So did the guy actually fuck Carrie or were they just getting into it?

[quote] But I do believe that Seema would become fast friends with Carrie and the other two and she fits right in at the table. She's the only interesting new character.
She feels the most natural because she's clearly the closest to aping Samantha, and I don't doubt that they would enjoy her company, but- there's just a shorthand that friends of 30 years have that's difficult to do around a new person without someone getting annoyed.
And also, don't these other three women have close friends? I find it hard to believe that a successful real estate agent, documentary filmmaker and professor don't each have their own close circle. Charlotte and LTW make the most sense because their kids go to the same school, but I would imagine someone like LTW would have nothing but disdain for Charlotte being nothing but a housewife. Nya seems very uncomfortable when she gets together with the core. Only Seema fits in because she's just as vapid (though delightful) as Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda, and was written to take the place of Samantha.

You know who is interested in 55-year old post menopausal women? Men who are 75+. For the most part, women who are 50+ are pretty much invisible in the world. Especially to men. Time for Carrie to go beyond the world of 30-something sex and into the deeper, more fulfilling experiences of women who are 55+.

The Hunger Games series was on this weekend, and Seema was President Snow's assistant, maybe his wife? Her IMDB credit is vague.

on the return of Aidan:
MPK: "I didn’t bring Aidan back to fail".
SJP: The dynamic between Carrie and Aidan won’t be a brief or frivolous reconciliation.
“It’s a rich relationship. It’s undeniably exciting as an actor and certainly for writers to explore. Who are they now? Are they good for each other? Are they, you know, apologetic? Are they trying to course correct in some ways? Are they better for each other? Are they worse for one another? And it’s just a hugely joyful thing to explore with that actor, with John Corbett, because he brings so much to it.”
There is excitement and curiosity and fear. I think the way she’s pursuing it is still with the hope and the optimism and the real interest in it. But she’s a grown up and she’s an independent person who isn’t needing to be reliant upon someone. But she is someone that is, you know, deeply romantic and excited about the flirt, and the chase, but more so perhaps on her terms than she would have been able to create in her younger past.”

Jesus Christ R582 that is painful to read. I’m convinced SJP and MPK both have long Covid brain fog…because nothing else makes sense

The actress playing Seema was in one of the Hunger Games movies (played an assistant to President Snow). She also played Saul's wife in several seasons of the Showtime show Homeland.

The quote at 582 is word salad and gibberish. It is no wonder the show is terrible.

wasn't Pete the dog already old when Aidan had him? So I doubt he is still around when Aidan and Carrie reunite.

by Anonymous | reply 588 | July 17, 2023 7:03 AM |
I always thought Aidan was as dysfunctional as Carrie. I found him demanding and rigid. He had an inflexible view of what the relationship should be... in a way, he was a male Charlotte. It would be interesting if they explore whether he's mellowed and appreciates he might have been a little overbearing.
