At a certain age women need, and most have to, put away trendy high-heeled footage. My sister said around 50 she found heels to be excruciatingly painful so now opts for flats or very low heels. Long in the tooth Carrie is ridiculous in those trendy heels.

From Variety: “And Just Like That” notably takes advantage of fan patience in the season opener, which involves Carrie and friends preparing to attend the Met Gala and combines several of King’s worst impulses. (These include treating our suspension of disbelief with a touch too much elasticity, and mistaking fans’ love for the fairy-tale aspects of Carrie’s aesthetic for a materialistic gluttony.)
I hope that hurt. Rightly or wrongly, I blame this dick for fucking up both shows.

MPK is a grotesque Keebler elf who joins Ryan Murphy in the Faggotship of Hollywood Hacks. The worst thing for creativity is to become, old, rich, happy, & fat.
There are no real stakes, challenges, or purpose. It's just one extended street walk runway scene followed by lunch with the girls at some trendy upscale spot followed by a dinner date with a guy and writing at a laptop. At this point, it's so rinse and repeat ChatGPT could've written the script.
When did SJP & MPK get the idea we no longer cared to see working women trying to advance their careers while having fun with hot men? Why the reticence to inject some more reality into the show? It's simply not interesting watching people who don't have any real problems. You always know Carrie will suffer no financial consequences for her lavish spending. Miranda's career transition has not resulted in any financial constraints. Charlotte is utterly useless.
Why watch? There are no lessons to be found. No tips on how to live life and make it all work. It's all just SJP smiling to the sky and giggling like a desiccated schoolgirl while prancing in the street as derivative, corny, inspirational music plays about being a tough, strong, fighter for fat fraus sitting on their couches.

Anyone in New York society can go to the met gala if they want. I think you have to be vetted to make sure you're appropriate for the crowd but it is a fundraiser. (I think Ivanka and Jared were turned down--they only get to attend charity events in NYC that will allow them to buy tickets).
even celebrities are invited by fashion brands that buy tables. I definitely believe Carrie would go if Big had enough money to buy tables. It is a charity event. $52k per person.

NYT defends the new Miranda
Which brings me to an argument I made throughout Season 1, which most people disagreed with me on. But I’m sticking to it: So much of who Miranda is now and what she does seem out of character because she has never been hit this hard by love. Che is the “core shaker” none of her other partners — including her ex-husband, Steve Brady (David Eigenberg) — ever were, which has softened Miranda in a way many of us never thought we would see. Our self-sufficient queen never worried before that she couldn’t make it on her own. But for the first time, she has something to lose. It shows.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 22, 2023 11:46 AM |
Miranda finds herself stranded in Malibu without a phone to call an Uber. Che sends Lyle (Oliver Hudson) to pick up Miranda, and whoops! Has Che never mentioned being still legally married to that guy?
What might be most wild about this story line is that Miranda is talked out of being miffed by it in a matter of minutes. Che shrugs it off as no biggie, and all it takes is a few kisses for Miranda to forget the whole thing. This is the same woman who walked out on a man at a comedy club in the original series when she found out her date was separated, but not divorced, from his wife.

Miranda gets the raunchy sex scene in episode one and the full-frontal nudity (which is not raunchy, but involves struggling to get out of a sensory deprivation tank). We also see her hoiking herself into some sort of bondage outfit complete with strap-on; someone behind this show has clearly decided we need more risque sex and it has to involve Miranda, because we’re not going to get it from prissy Charlotte or prudish Carrie.
Episode one sees the characters going to the Met Gala, but nothing funny happens (thank goodness for gay friend Anthony, who has remembered that this is supposed to be a comedy). Episode two includes Carrie and her handsome podcast producer boyfriend writing an advert for vaginal wellness products, and that isn’t even supposed to be funny. It’s dull. But SATC devotees should keep the faith: Carrie’s old flame Aidan shows up soon. And there’s the promise of that Kim Cattrall comeback. At one point, Seema’s hairdresser asks her: “Ready to be blown?” “Am I ever,” she purrs. That’s a Samantha Jones line if ever I heard one, and we need the real deal.

Technically given Carrie was 'friendly' with Vogue editor Enid, (Candace Bergens character) Carrie likely would've WORKED the met gala up to marrying John/Big.
In the series now, was her history with the magazine totally retconned from the first show, like most other things? I watched it, but remember virtually nothing.

This show is so dumb but I love that it showed the overreach of teachers and schools in aiding and abetting bullshit "non binary" identities.

RANDOM THOUGHTS:
Apparently, everyone in Manhattan now is Asian, if the second episode is any indication.
My God, I hate that they made this show about one-percenters with no real problems. Are we the viewing public supposed to be care about these women getting dressed for the MET Gala??
The dialogue is punchier this season but the underlying problems remain. Charlotte is purposeless and frankly, Nicole Ari Parker is simply playing a black version of Charlotte and stealing her thunder. Charlotte should have so much more to do than just fret about her wayward kids. Kristin Davis is likely seething behind the scenes.
The writers have made Seema the full-on Samantha replacement this season and it's not working because Samantha, for all her archness and confidence, always had a figurative (and literal once) pie thrown in her face to humble her and these writers aren't good with that.
The poster upthread who said the Miranda of old would've called bullshit on the pronoun jack-fuckery is spot-on. That fad will die down and this show won't age well.
*******SPOILER ALERT*********
It's hard to believe the writers bagged Carrie's SATC podcast after just two episodes when there was so much potential to be tapped. And the guy playing her producer/ sex partner is smoking hot. I definitely would've gone to that bourbon roof party with him and afterward would've ravished him all night long. This iteration of SATC suffers from a paucity of hot men, unlike the original.

Carrie is asked to read an ad for a vaginal wellness company, and she just can’t stomach it. She hates all the icky language and simply can’t bring herself to talk about issues “down there.” She insists on reworking the copy.
The clownery that ensues around this plot point cannot be overstated. First of all, a vaginal wellness product as a sponsor for her podcast is entirely on brand. The idea that Carrie would be so thrown by the pairing is absurd.
That she and Franklyn task themselves with rewriting the copy instead of simply asking some lackey on the marketing team to request a less geriatric word for “suppository” is a colossal waste of their time. That Carrie, you know, the sex writer, has to call multiple sources to ask what words they use for “vagina” — and that Franklyn feels it necessary to download Final freaking Draft to punch up a few lines of text that could easily have been edited on a napkin — brings this whole sequence to a level of buffoonery we’ve not seen since Kim Cattrall’s Samantha graced us with “Lawrence of my labia.”
The most ridiculous thing the audience is asked to believe, though, is that Carrie’s refusal simply to read this copy out loud is the final straw that collapses the entire podcast empire. That’s it. That one ad didn’t pan out, and the whole company crumbles. The Sex and the City podcast is no more, and with it, the Thursday night sessions with Franklyn die off as well.
Maybe it’s for the best, though, for us, as viewers. Carrie has a blank slate now, both personally and professionally. No job, no man, but plenty of financial stability and freedom to do whatever she wants. It’s exciting to think about where that might take her with no chance of running back to the late Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Especially for the Aidan stans among us.

Talking about Charlotte... Once again, her character is kind of an afterthought. Charlotte has fulfilled an important role over the years, representing a population of women who prioritize children and family above career. But to me, that role has outlived its usefulness. It has been years since we’ve seen Charlotte consider the world outside of her immediate family; sadly, the biggest conflict she faces in these first two episodes is whether or not she can get some kid-size Chanel dress back. Let’s not forget that Charlotte was once a boss in the art world. I keep waiting for that dormant side of her to awaken.

by Anonymous | reply 127 | June 23, 2023 1:13 AM |
Carrie’s vaginal deodorant dilemma reminded me of the young Nora Ephron’s expose in Esquire about how bad that shit is for you. I guess hoping Carrie would be coming to the same conclusion was too much to hope for. No, she’s just too bashful to say “vagina.”

I sort of liked the first episode - full disclosure, I did FF the Che and Miranda scenes. Too obnoxious. Seema and Lisa are stealing the show. Nya had some good stuff, too. She's a good actress. I bet Miranda's lez lez storyline occurs at some point. Carrie's just being Carrie. Charlotte and Miranda are actually pretty pointless.

Cynthia Nixon has always been so plain and blah. She's not pretty like Kristin or Kim, and she's not so-hideous-that-it's-interesting like SJP. The bitch has always just been there, blending into the wallpaper. The smart, accomplished, ugly and forgettable friend.
As for Charlotte, this character has never been given a compelling story line or written well. The nanny thing in the second movie could have gone somewhere interesting but then MPK copped out and made the nanny a lesbian. * insert eye roll here *

[quote]I'm shocked they have Charlotte always running around looking like Mrs Cleaver with pearls and little dresses. Why can't she wear jeans, Prada loafers and a blazer?
She's never been anything other than a caricature on this show. It's pathetic, actually. That said, Kristin Davis is very pear shaped and maybe she doesn't like how she looks in pants. Now that I think of it, I can't recall her ever wearing them... leggings when working out is the closest that I can remember.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | June 23, 2023 2:31 AM |
Lisa, Nya and Seema are so siloed they might as well be on different shows. Nya only has scenes with Miranda (and with Miranda in California, Nya's scenes are mostly her acting with a phone) or her ex husband, Lisa works with Charlotte and her family, Seema's only link to the show is Carrie. If they aren't going to integrate them into the friend group completely, why are the even on this show?

I think I might be done. At some point MPK and SJP decided this show should be a full blown fantasy that has no connection to real NYC life. AJLT has turned that part up even higher and turned the smart writing down to a negative number. They’ve tarnished the brand.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | June 23, 2023 3:17 AM |
I made it further into this season than last (meaning 3/4 into the first episode). Questions/thoughts:
Where is the comedy? There is nothing clever or humorous going on.
Is this a drama? Nothing dramatic or compelling is going on.
Kristin Davis's face looks better but needed to be deflated by about 25%. Why is she talking like she has dentures?
Sarita and SJP need forehead Botox. All those lines are distracting when they're competing with the below-the-brow Botox and fillers the actresses have clearly engaged in.
Mario Cantone continues to be a wretched disaster in appearance and performance.
SJP seems exhausted.
Where is the script? Everything plays like stage directions. The direction is nonexistent too—the show would be 50% better with proper editing/pacing.

Here's the pinned comment on the AJLT sub-reddit.
These fucking reddit mods are worried that a fictional character might get misgendered:
Che and Sara use they/them pronouns.
This show has aired over a year ago, and while we obviously tolerate the occasional mistake and merely remove misgendering comments, please beware that repeated offenses will result in a ban. Reddit now allows us to see a log of deleted comments for each user, so it’s much easier to assess repeated offenses.
Moreover, referring to trans identities as “fantasy”, “not real” or any implication that they do not exist will result in an immediate ban.
Thank you to everyone that has been reporting comments violating our rules, please do not hesitate to do it as it makes our work much faster in catching them.

I agree with R136 and you've said it better than I was going to - I just don't see the point of introducing a whole load of new characters and then not doing anything particularly interesting with them, and not integrating them with the regular cast - they are mostly these weird little vignettes and literally phoning it in with the main cast.
After 2 episodes, definitely waiting for something funny and/or dramatic to happen, there's literally no story at the moment. Also think the editing is really weird, the cuts are too quick and the scenes are too quick in a lot of cases. But, I will continue to hate-watch I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | June 23, 2023 9:42 AM |
We already know how this story will end, because SJP needs Carrie to "win" no matter how improbable. She got her man, she got his money, now she needs a romance and some kids to play mommy to. Enter Aidan stage left, divorced with some kids who will probably be school age, precocious and adoring. The show will end with Carrie finally ~having it all~.

Che’s standup - OMG LA people drive everywhere amirite - receiving such warm applause is so patronising and fake.
It’s the same as how the trans sex workers in recent seasons of SVU are dreamy romantics gossiping about slumber parties. In season 1 they were tough, nasty bitches.
Positive representation of non-binary and trans people doesn’t need to be infantilising, it needs to be real and human.

The strength of the first series was really emotion being brought to the forefront against the backdrop of NYC fabulousity. Now it seems to be about access to the rare air they’re all breathing. So tiresome. Carrie’s front of mind problem is her dress. Charlotte’s more real line is about Harry getting cranky about an everything bagel? Shut the fuck up & pick one up on your way to the office. We don’t care about the law professor and her husband because we’ve barely seem them together. The wealthy doc maker? Please! Is her documentary about artisanal cheese? The daughter’s poem recitation needed to be in FRENCH? In what world is Che funny? And Miranda, who is still married, can’t go to Che’s damn IMDB page to discover they’re married? Plot driven sacrifice of a character. Hack driven - and not the good Jean Smart kind of hack. Bad sitcom hack bullshit. Anthony the accessory gay friend got diminished throughout the episode. As did Stanford throughout the series. Lots of self loathing from MPK there. Carrie, a sex columnist who once wrote about a politician wanting to piss on her can’t handle a vagina ad? I’m going to break up w this series via post-it note.

And Just Like That will end with it all being Stanford's recurring dream.
On the morning of September 11, 2001 Carrie met the gals for breakfast at Windows On the World restaurant.
Carrie called Mr. Big as the joint was filling with smoke. He missed the call. Turns out he was bi-sexual and was getting blown in the steam room at the gym that morning.
Miranda and Charlotte were jumpers.
Samantha almost escaped. She only had coffee and grapefruit and left early to meet with her broker.
Turns out, the broker was also in the tower, just a few floors below. She was unharmed in the initial impact, however, she chose the wrong stairwell, and got trapped on the 39th floor. She perished when the building collapsed.
Meanwhile, across town, Anthony had been called into the doctor's office because his latest HIV test came back from the lab and the doctor had to give the bad news in person. A few years later, after battling meth addiction, Anthony would hang himself in his closet.
To this day, Stanford still has night terrors and often travels upstate to hike alone in the forest.

by Anonymous | reply 153 | June 23, 2023 11:37 AM |
From the Rolling Stone review:
[quote](*) For those wondering, Anthony’s husband Stanford is referred to as still being alive and staying in Japan, having ghosted Anthony, Carrie, and everyone else in his life last season, which was the production’s clumsy attempt to deal with actor Willie Garson’s sudden death during filming of Season One. It was an unfortunate spot for everyone to be in, since they couldn’t exactly kill both Carrie’s husband and her best male friend in the same season, but it means one of the show’s kinder characters is blowing off everyone who cares about him.
So they pulled a Samantha on Stanford! These writers are stuck in high school.

I like the documentary lady, I wish they would give her and Charlotte some kind of artistic collaboration plot. I liked them in season one.
I hate the new Miranda. I get that people can change but things that made her character stand out, and comedic, are gone. I'd love for them to lose Che, give Miranda a place teaching law at Columbia which would give her a shitload of story potential. She came out, great, don't lock her into a relationship it is killing story lines.
Carrie still sucks.

This show hates women, the characters (and, perhaps even the actors themselves) are self-hating, and its audience is being insulted.
I've never watched an episode of "Real Housewives", but I gather it's unabashedly, openly, self-exploitative, and, seemingly, everybody is in on the joke.
That's much more admirable and honest then all this effort by "AJLT", a money grab dressed up in fictionalized, fake "meaning" and "edginess".
I'm low-brow and a fan of trash. When I'm in the mood for it, you couldn't peel me away from "Cheaters".
But even its staged falsity somehow manages to be much more compelling than all the moneyed clothes, locales and straining, cringe-worthy story arcs AJLT.
So pleased I can out-source my actually watching it to reading this thread.

The politics of cultural respectability in the second episode seems 20 years out of date. Obviously it is still relevant but it is tired old ground to be the episode’s theme for upper class black characters on TV.
I like the college teacher woman with braids and she does quite a bit with her character but as Cynthia demanded a non-binary lover for Miranda, then than character should have been jettisoned. There’s just not enough time to do her justice.

There is no point in doing a reboot if we're going to ship off the main characters from the original (we're already missing Samantha). I also find the professor and her marriage troubles tedious and we haven't spent enough time with Nya to actually care. If they want to do a new Sex and the City with the new characters, then do that. But this kind of limbo where the new characters exist on their own plane, do not interact with each other and barely with the OG characters is strange and disjointed.

^I'm not so sure it's that, but there seems to be no quality control at HBO/Max (whatever). r172, they changed the name specifically to protect HBO's brand, since they're dumping all the crappy Discovery reality shows on the streaming service and didn't want to taint the HBO brand by being associated by Discovery's crap. Hence, Max.

If Nya and Che were white straight women, both would have been jettisoned this season, the first for not integrating into the storylines or with the characters and the second for being the most hated character ever in the SATC universe. But because the two of them check so many diversity boxes and SJP and MPK are so afraid of the twitter mob going after them, we're stuck suffering through their storylines.
Exactly how does Nicole Ari Parker's family make their money? Because I know it ain't from documentary filmmaking. She seems even richer than Big was. It's a huge turnoff.
I hate Charlotte's children with the heat of a thousand suns. And Charlotte is a huge bore. Clearly the only solution is to give the character a mental break and have her murder her daughters. Win win.
I never want to see Miranda or Che nude or semi nude again. At least I was able to glory in the knowledge that Nixon had to suffer take after take with her face buried in Ramirez' disgusting crotch.
There is no way Miranda would have been as easily placated by Che's "explanation" of her marriage. Did I miss an episode last season where Miranda donated her brain to science?
A joke about driving in LA? Any other comic would have been booed off the stage. But not our Che! Everything she says is comedy GOLD!
Carrie is looking especially cronish this season. I don't buy for a minute that Ivan Hernandez was attracted to her. To quote Samantha, "No one wants to fuck Grandma's pussy."
Ali Stroker can't act. She should have thanked her non-working legs when she won the Tony, because that's clearly what got it for her.
I HATE THIS SHOW.

Episode 2 was little bit better than the first one but by God what they have done to the Miranda character is just criminal. At least with Charlotte and Carrie you can see some thread of what the character was 25 years ago but Miranda has been completely destroyed. This is all plot driven. Miranda was my favorite character on the show and I don't see her anywhere here. I FF thru every scene she and Che are in. I can't watch. Its literally unwatchable.

The original Miranda character is not a lesbian. She loves men. She loves fashion. And she sort of hates herself for being so into both, but she truly is. The writers apparently also forgot that in the first movie in 2008, Carrie gave her apartment a glam makeover with her book proceeds after Big jilted her on their wedding day. Fast forward to And Just Like That, and we're supposed to believe Carrie undid this expensive remodel and brought back the dingy old kitchen where Aleksandr Petrovsky once smashed a rat on the counter with a frying pan? 🙄

R206, This is a direct quote from Charlotte to Carrie in the 2008 movie. "I think it is so great that you're redoing your ENTIRE apartment." It's at 1:26 in the film.
Later at 1:56, Carrie has a new housewarming party with about 20-30 guests in what she calls her "grown-up apartment." There are also quick shots where you see the antique wall shelves in the bedroom are gone, and near the entry and kitchen a new glass built-in wall bookshelf that gives the impression it was more than "new furniture and paint on the walls." Though there were plenty of those, too.
I'd post screen shots, but they come out blackened probably to protect the IP. But I went back and actually looked at the film footage. There's a lack of continuity here. Go back and watch for yourself before you stir the pot again.

by Anonymous | reply 211 | June 24, 2023 2:34 AM |
You're all being very deliberately argumentative, typical DLers. The point is, the writers in that first movie had her invest in a glammed up apartment makeover with some modern finishes. Built-in modular storage system and wall-mounted flat screen in the living room. Some no doubt very expensive furnishings meant to look like retro antiques that Carrie would like. The character went to such an effort that she hosted a fucking housewarming for it. We see glimpses of the redone apartment again in the (HORRIBLE) second film.
Did she redo the kitchen? YOU'RE RIGHT. Technically, we don't know. But the larger point remains -- all that effort the character undertook not so long ago, we're now supposed to forget as though it never happened? Her apartment on AJLT looks barely different than season 1 of SATC, save for the new floral wallpaper.
And Just Like That, we have a continuity disconnect.
by Anonymous | reply 212 | June 24, 2023 2:46 AM |
Clearly she’s redone her apartment to look like it did years ago r212. Did you watch season 1? She even moves back into it to feel like her old self again.
It’s 100% believable that since 2008 she redid her apartment again, and decided she preferred it the way it was vs the more modern take. She only did the modern take when Big and her were over and she decided to change everything to avoid thinking of him. Knowing her once they got back together and got married she put it back to how it was because the modern update reminded her of when they broke up because he was gonna leave her at the altar.
Carrie is dramatic like that.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | June 24, 2023 2:53 AM |
Didn't she have a noisy downstairs neighbor in Season 1 of AJLT? Surely Carrie can afford to buy the whole building.

by Anonymous | reply 215 | June 24, 2023 3:26 AM |
R212 I'm guessing that style was great for a movie but a bit jarring in the TV series. Wasn't it a baby shower she was hosting in that little place which suddenly looked a lot bigger?
These women are so wealthy now any relatability they had for others is gone. Carrie had some great scenes where she felt inferior to more seemingly-perfect women such as Natasha or lamented her looks, before they retconed her as a fabulous goddess. Charlotte hasn't ever had any real problems and lives in some Park Ave fantasy. Miranda used to be the "realest" but we know how that turned out ..

There have been a few occasions in the past where the women dated poor people but we need escapism, not a documentary.

R74 I agree with every word.
So not only does Carrie, a writer who wrote a column called SEX and the City, refuse to promote Summer's Eve, she also, in large part, kills an entire podcast business?
I am willing to suspend a TON of belief but nothing about any of that "storyline" makes one iota of sense. I could see if she was being asked to promote a racist product. Or a product like owned by, say, Monsanto, but a fucking douche? Really?
Maybe Lily can write a woke Upper East Side protest song and save the podcast empire from its demise?
by Anonymous | reply 268 | June 25, 2023 5:08 AM |
Another bullshit, bad writing moment. Carrie & Silver Fox, critical to the podcast empire, walk in WITH NO IDEA THE COMPANY IS SHUTTING DOWN. Wheels is already supervising the removing of paper files for a digital company. All because one commercial cannot be rewritten to the writer’s satisfaction.
It’s a shame, because the podcast was working. Carrie-centric. Able to comment on plot. More modern than newspaper. Squandered.

Funnily, I think both series show Nixon at her worst. For me Miranda always sounds like she's either on the verge of shrill tears or scathing fury. I've seen her in a few other things, like Gilded Age, and was surprised she can play anything else and play it well. She's quite endearing on Gilded Age.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | June 25, 2023 10:25 AM |
She was excellent on the terrible Ratched.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | June 25, 2023 10:47 AM |
If you look at SATC Kim had the best blend of comedy and dramatic timing. She makes lines which don't work on paper just by her pauses or intonation. Sam should have been a cartoon which some of the storylines she had to play but somehow Kim humanises and makes her likable.
She also plays completely different characters with skill too, she could have probably made more money doing Samantha rip-offs following SATC but consciously went back to theatre and took on different roles.
TBF SJP tried a couple of non-Carrie like roles such as "Spinning Into Butter" but I don't think it worked for her.

I think the Nya character is the biggest disappointment so far this season - of all the new characters I think she had the potential to be the most interesting. But what they have her doing/ how they have her written so, so bad that it’s embarrassing.
Che is a lot more palatable this season, so they seemed to do some work on that.
Carrie decided to renovate her apartment in the intervening years. She has fuck you money. It’s not a big deal.
I placated myself regarding the seaweed by deciding there must be small bits of plastic/netting/misc trash tangled up in it so that’s why they were just grabbing the seaweed. The gag with the dour kid cleaning the beach didn’t work, and I wanted a side story exploring the sex lives of the surfers. Disappointed!

The original format was for Carrie to explore relatable relationship or sex issues in her column and for the other characters to explore how those issues manifest in different ways. Instead of having a non-binary permanent character, Carrie would have written a column about having a relationship with a non-binary person, and then the women’s story lines would have explored it and fleshed it out. I miss that format. New topic each week with supporting characters coming and going.

Charlotte used to wear slacks all the times, high waisted numbers. And wore jeans in the scene where they had a picnic when Carrie wore a dirndl with the poncho Lily wore, Samantha wore a long lavender coat and Miranda wore a white turtleneck and a teal wind cheater with the hood up topped with a blue bucket hat. Man, Patricia Field must have hated Cynthia with a passion.
The new costume department are awful. SJP tries her best, bless her heart, but the outfits are not cohesive as a whole.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | June 26, 2023 4:23 PM |
I finally caught up with this show out of curiosity, and it wasn't that bad. Granted, I didn't really watch the original show, but I did see some episodes and the first movie. All the gender nonsense is ridiculous and annoying, but I do see what Miranda sees in Che, though I hate how subservient she seems. All she seems to care about is their relationship and has nothing else going on. I lost a lot of respect for that character when she abandoned the prize internship to follow Che to Hollywood for a TV pilot. She wanted to be a human rights lawyer and now all she values is mind-blowing nonbinary sex and being a hanger-on to someone who would have come back in a couple of months anyway?

How about Mindy Kaling as Seema's bitch daughter who is the all-time Ozempic success story? How about Carrie bringing out a shoe line? How about Aidan leaving Carrie for Bo Derek? How about Miranda taking up with Susan Sarandon and the two of them going to work for RFK Jr.?

R293. I can understand Miranda's actions. She was a corporate lawyer. She made a shitload of money and supported her husband and her son and her son's grown up and doesn't need her and she has no real life with her husband, they're more like roommates. She's always been the responsible one.
And she got motivated by Trump and embraced "woke" (ugh) and went back to university and she's getting a chance to be relive her youth. She's a wealthy woman pushing 60 who gets one last chance at the rodeo. She she is gonna ride hard.
What I find surprising is that Che would want Miranda. They just don't have any chemistry. And what irritates me is that no ever refers to Che as she, considering she's a big sturdy lesbian.

If this show had just a tiny amount of courage, they could make Che a much better character, or rather, they could allow people to have normal reactions to Che and get somewhere. They had a real opportunity with Tony Danza, who I think is a decent guy but with probably more traditionalist views than not, just ask some real questions. Don't go into some panic that nobody must ever question the glorious wonder that is Che (except, you know she's a fatty, so L.A. is allowed to worry about that). Have somebody say something normal like, "I respect you, but honestly I don't get this nonbinary stuff. Can you help me with that. Do you really see yourself as not having a sex or a gender?" It would be ten times more interesting than some bitch failing to make Carrie a dress or Charlotte's idiot daughter having some inane guilt about privilege.

I listened to writer Samantha Irby, who has been a staff writer on the new series, talk about the Che character.
She said she’s supposed to be annoying. She’s that person who will confront you after the most benign remark.
But then why don’t they show people reacting to her appropriately?
by Anonymous | reply 303 | June 26, 2023 9:28 PM |
R301 excellent point. They assume their audience already get it or at least won't question it. AJLT is not the show to educate people but it would be far less alienating if they actually gave a voice to legitimate questions people have, or let Sara have a well written scene describing what it's like to be "they"

There was a funny line in the first series when Miranda told Charlotte that she'd cheated on Steve.
Miranda "I had sex in the kitchen with them"

Miranda "No, Chey uses they/them pronouns"

The writing sucks with the reboot. They really got everything wrong

Yeah, there is something deeply wrong with the writing r306. I don't know if it is all particularly introverted 20-somethings who graduated from little bubble schools doing the writing, but it all seems oddly childish. The first season really did have this vibe of middle-aged white women discover that black people and other strange beings exist. These are intelligent, sophisticated, New Yorker women and everything seemed like, oooh, it ain't like this back in Kansas, or Appalachia!

by Anonymous | reply 311 | June 26, 2023 11:21 PM |
Speaking of "prude," I've been meaning to say that I don't believe Carrie's issue with the vagina commercial was prudishness. She just thought the wording was corny and unrealistic and took too long to come up with a better version. I'm wondering why Wheelie didn't know Carrie and Franklyn were working on it and didn't manage to buy the whole company some time.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | June 26, 2023 11:25 PM |
In real life, the three original (Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte) wouldn’t be acting like this not one fucking bit.
All three are upper middle-class (if not downright rich) with decades in NYC living extremely privileged lives.
Their lives wouldn’t be chasing stupid trends, oblivious to minorities (even if their just the doorman), go brain dead (like Miranda acting like she’s a freshman in college) and acting like horny teenagers. Miranda especially would be a very experienced lawyer that graduated from Harvard.
All are pushing 60 and would have gone through menopause. Unless they’re on hormone replacement, their sex drive is reduced to almost nothing. Which is why women, once they get a certain age, don’t give two fucks for men and never remarry.

Sara Ramirez can look beautiful at times. But that photo of her up thread on the couch in a shirt and boots - woof, I can smell the fish from here. Such a vulgar pose.

I actually find Che more tolerable this season, although that’s not saying much. But at least they gave the character some vulnerability instead of having them be a total narcissist.
I also feel like the story is leading toward Che and Miranda having a polyamorous relationship and a threeway with Che’s ex because there is no point in casting Oliver Hudson if they do not get his fine ass naked. So that could be fun!

I feel like the writers are retconning their intentions with Che. Just like the writer referenced upthread, I read an interview where MPK did something similar, blaming the audience for not getting what they were doing with that character. But it’s all bullshit. They were clearly trying to force acceptance of this non-binary bullshit, with none of the characters allowed to even express mild confusion, much less criticism.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | June 27, 2023 11:07 AM |
I wouldn’t care if Miranda had discovered she was a lesbian after all these years. Sure it happens. But what I believe has turned viewers off is the way it was written and how absolutely ridiculous and pathetic Miranda has become. The character and her integrity is completely gone. And there isn’t an ounce of chemistry between her and Che. Zero. Their sex scenes make me want to vomit. LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | June 27, 2023 11:18 AM |
R334 if they'd gone with the Professor then maybe more believable.
Is Miranda meant to be bi?
by Anonymous | reply 335 | June 27, 2023 12:39 PM |
Some of you all are projecting your own confusion about trans/non-binary people onto these characters. These are grown, educated, liberal women who have lived in NYC for decades. It would not be believable if they were like “WHAT IS A NON-BINARY?”
You don’t have to like Che but claiming that these characters would not understand their existence is just incorrect.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | June 27, 2023 1:10 PM |
R336 I think what people are suggesting is that the characters viewers knew from SATC would question this identity or discuss it, as an exploration of what it means. The writing on AJLT makes this a done deal.
If AJLT wanted to be part of the conversation it would actually let Sara voice what being non-binary means from a personal perspective. It would also add to the character which many viewers are struggling to understand or connect to.
And don't give these new yorkers too much credit, this is the same show that had Miranda act like she'd never seen a black person before and Charlotte actively collecting non-white people for her social set
by Anonymous | reply 337 | June 27, 2023 1:18 PM |
As sweet and kind as Charlotte is, and nicely played by Kristin, I actually think she's the worst. A WASP who was seeking a rich man. She broke up with someone over taste in dinnerware. She lived on Park Av despite not working.
While marrying Harry was a step forward she remains an elitist snob.

I agree with this. When Rose/Rock "came out" as "non binary"., i.e. decided she didn't want to conform to stereotypical gender roles Charlotte's reaction would have been to point out that there are lots of ways to be female. FFS doesn't Charlotte remember when she dragged up as dude with big dick energy?
But still.it's a TV show so no need to get worked up.

All these old women who are being chased by hot men! Reality has no part of this show. If this was real, Carrie would have to pay for it, or be going out with old decrepit men because that's the only guys she'd be able to get. Or just hang out with her girlfriends and bemoan the fact that all the good men are taken or not interested.

It would be more believable if they didn't buy into the whole "non-binary" thing and called bullshit on it. Especially Miranda who was the ultimate cynic. They should have stuck with a lesbian angle and had that dumb kid as the only transgender as part of teen rebellion and angst since it's a teen fad now.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | June 27, 2023 6:09 PM |
When I heard writer Samantha Irby interviewed about how the season came together, it sounded like they outlined every episode very quickly.
Too quickly if sounds like. Or maybe it’s just that MPK, who dictated the broad strokes, wasn’t open to debate. Because you’d think someone would have pushed back on some of this nonsense.
I’d have raised me hand and asked them to remind me exactly which character viewers were supposed to like and care about and why.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | June 27, 2023 6:59 PM |
I’ve lived in New York over 20 years and hang around a lot of wealthy, sophisticated women. It’s simply untrue to say they would fully except non-binary without any confusion or at least questions. I think that’s what a lot of people dislike about the trans movement in general: they pull out a whole new concept that was wholly undiscussed for centuries and then act like it’s a long-held no-brainer that every other human should just accept as true.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | June 27, 2023 7:35 PM |
ENOUGH with the transphobic “transgender people aren’t real” stuff. You trolls invade EVERY thread. Can we at least talk about a dumb TV show without you all banging on about your anti-trans agenda? If you think being non-binary is not real…don’t watch the show. No one is holding a gun to your head. This is a great example of how your “we’re being FORCED to accept trans/non-binary people!” nonsense is bullshit. Literally all you have to do is pick up the remote control and press the off button.

by Anonymous | reply 347 | June 27, 2023 7:54 PM |
R346, there have been several trans characters in Sex And The City, namely the guy who named himself after Samantha and the sex workers who enjoyed the rooftop party after keeping Samantha awake.
What people are discussing is the way people react to that. We're not allowed to say the L word but Miranda is now in a lesbian relationship with a lesbian so butch she doesn't even think of herself a woman, and everyone refers to her as they/them as if it's the most natural thing in the world.
Incidentally there was something on TERF Island twitter today about a cervical cancer charity using the term "bonus hole" to mean vagina. If Carrie had said bonus hole in the advert would she have saved the podcast?
by Anonymous | reply 348 | June 27, 2023 7:55 PM |
R348 if you think the episode from 20 years ago when Samantha called the sex workers “trannies” & “chicks with dicks” and dumped water on them is current, up-to-date, and better than what they’re doing now, you’re a transphobe

What pisses me off about this show is they do a terrible job presenting LGBT folks (and Miranda’s descent into rampant lesbianism), despite a gay showrunner.
I watch We’re Here on Max. It’s three drag queens who connect with gay/trans/allies/whatever in anti-LGBT parts of the country and prep them to be in a drag show. The people they meet are really affecting.
When you watch the show, you meet so many lovely, sensible people. An adorable trans 9-year-old in Florida who is being demonized but has a lovely family and is just the loveliest child ever… and she will have a hard next decade, I suspect. A lesbian couple with one wife a late-in-life trans and they are so adorable together. Etc.
The point is, there are so many people and types of characters that would make us all think differently about people different from us. They’re not on this show.
The LGBT characters on this show reinforce stupid stereotypes.

Precisely, R363. Fifteen years ago this show would be on the cover of a lesbian magazine for its amazing representation, and we could have all gotten behind it. Because homosexuality is a real sexual orientation. Instead we are pretending there isn’t a single lesbian on this show, but that two of the characters defy all the established laws of biology. It’s homophobic insanity presented as progress.

Samantha didn't dump water on the hookers because they were keeping her awake, it was because she was getting plowed by one of the hottest men I ever saw on the show and she couldn't concentrate to orgasm. That was the joke, missing sleep wasn't nearly as bad as not climaxing

I have cut the cord but TV is often my music, so I am streaming in the background and I've been watching the home stretch episodes of SATC. Samantha's cancer storyline was pretty good and Cattrall played it very well. When they wrote for her beyond making her the punchline sex doll, Samantha had a lot of common sense, warmth and kindness. Cattrall played it very well.

by Anonymous | reply 385 | June 28, 2023 5:49 PM |
Yeah, Nixon should get down on her knees and thank Cattrall for not coming back. If Cattrall was still on the show, there's no way Nixon would have gotten away with the blackmailing shit she did, forcing SJP and MPK to bow to her every whim. They would have told her to get lost, and she would have caved.
But with Cattrall out of the picture, she pretty much knew she could ask for anything and get it since the show would never survive losing TWO of the four main characters. As it is, it hasn't survived losing Samantha, but they're still propping its corpse up every Thursday for a viewing.

by Anonymous | reply 390 | June 28, 2023 7:37 PM |
It's not working, the original show, even when I wasn't trying to watch it, I'd wind up leaving it on and eventually would wind up watching it. I tried watching season 1, (loved hate watching the second movie, the first one is just too, too maudlin for consumption). The first season of AJLT was tedious, boring and the execution was pithy at best. This season seems to be moving in the same direction. There was a great shot, NAP and the dress, crossing the street, flawless.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | June 28, 2023 7:59 PM |
I didn't mean literal blackmailing, R390, but Cynthia was in a place to demand, and get, everything she wanted because the producers could not afford to lose both Samantha and Miranda. So Nixon had them over a barrel and exploited it to the hilt. She's even so much as said so in interviews for the first season (while dancing around it, of course).
by Anonymous | reply 392 | June 28, 2023 8:12 PM |

No one is fucking watching to see the rich black woman sniff her kid's breath. I think my penis turned in on itself during Miranda and Che's steamy tit sucking session. Why the fuck would Carrie need to consult so many people over a fuck buddy? Charlotte and Harry are boring old fucks. Don't even get me started on that cunt Carrie telling Anthony that Seema needs the Met Ball more. That lame, Wish version Samantha gave up her place so fuck you bitch, you can't just call up last minute and decide to come. And just like that, I'm done. They've ruined their legacy.

For better or worse the original series is a part of the cultural zeitgeist and people despite their anti-woke complaining will continue to hate watch the new iteration so it will go until the three ladies call it quits. SJP has had really only two hit films in her career and she can't play anything other than Carrie. Kristin is a shit actress who got unbelievably lucky with the original series. She's got nothing going on other than this. Cynthia has probably had the most successful and varied career out of the three of them and since apparently she has even more influence now than SJP, she'll likely be the one who decides to pull the plug

"The second-season premiere of And Just Like That …, the Max reboot of HBO hit Sex and the City, returned to decent numbers last week, but it was down significantly from the highly anticipated series debut.
The season one bow averaged 1.1 million households during the live-plus-three-day viewing period, according to data provided by Samba TV, which measures TV engagement. Comparatively, the season two debut episode was off by 59%, to 463,000 households.
Not all of them stuck around. The second episode, which also bowed last week, averaged 404,000 viewers, off 13% from episode one. While many premiere viewers could certainly circle back to episode two, it does speak to a lack of engagement, indicating viewers weren’t excited enough by the premiere to watch episode two right away."

Loved this honest assessment from a slightly earlier review of season 2, in The Times:
'The new season is just as smug, irritating and brimming with the first-world problems of spoilt, rich, whiney clothes horses as we’ve come to expect. To be honest, I’d be disappointed if it weren’t. It is also made with astonishingly high production values which, I hate to admit, makes it pretty watchable. But hell, it’s annoying.'
LOL... that's the truth of it... but based on the numbers not quite as watchable as before.
[quote]For better or worse the original series is a part of the cultural zeitgeist and people despite their anti-woke complaining will continue to hate watch the new iteration so it will go until the three ladies call it quits.
R412, I disagree. You seem to forget these things are made to make money and/or build brand. Declining audiences and moderate reviews do not represent ROI for HBO. They'll pull the plug when the metrics sink below a certain threshold. I think AJLT could continue with either smaller audiences and great reviews or big audiences and shit reviews, but how do you reckon it can continue with both?
Big audiences at HBO are measured in the millions. The Last of Us' 2023 season premiere drew 4.7 million viewers. Boardwalk Empire once pulled 4.81 million viewers. House of the Dragon drew 9.986 million viewers when it premiered last August. Game of Thrones debuted to 4.2 million viewers in 2011 before steadily exploding. AJLT is not pulling numbers like that. Season 1 premiered at 1.1M, season two at less than half that. As a piece of bragging rights creativity it isn't pulling that either. The economics aren't there. Maybe it gets a three but the business case is hard to construct.

More shows like Somebody Somewhere and fewer shows like AJLT please. I don't know about any of you but I'm hovering around the poverty level so watching rich people whine and complain isn't my cup of tea anymore.

I think you’re all too focused on linear ratings when most viewers not longer watch live or same day.
I also hope it gets cancelled (so sick of all the press about these tired actresses/characters) but it’s amazing how many people will still watch a favorite IP even significantly diminished.

The taping of the sitcom was painfully awful, especially since the humor Che is constantly complaining about is funnier than any of her standup, even though it's still terrible. The fucking fat Phranc clone playing the showrunner is a cartoon. SJP needing everyone to flatter Carrie over and over and have her remind them she just wrote a book which she's narrating is super irritating, especially if she really doesn't want to do it. if you're so dead set on getting an actress to do it, then how come every single fucking person you meet in the street you have to tell- oh, I'm on the way to record my book. oh, I just finished a recording session for my book! The MILF list felt like a first year writer's room idea that should have been left on the chalkboard (and is completely indicative of how the writers have no idea what to do with Charlotte or LTW), Seema getting her handbag stolen is also a Z-list storyline that should have been flushed down the toilet, and trying to shoehorn Nya into the lunches felt as awkward as it looked.
Yeah, I fucking watched it, you shithead. And it was a shitshow.

The jewelry heist scene:
Carrie and Seema attend Lisette’s swanky jewelry show, and as they’re admiring the baubles, a couple of cater waiters suddenly — and incredibly casually — start putting pieces in their pockets.
One of the waiters turns to Carrie and Seema and, cool as a cucumber, tells them to hand over their necklace and pinkie ring. He’s not even all that urgent about it.
Lisette sees what’s going on, freaks out and yells for someone to do something. So Carrie makes the snap decision to create a completely counterproductive distraction by screaming, “I have Covid!” Chaos ensues, allowing the super chill and weaponless waiter and at least one apparent accomplice to grab more stuff and run.
Couldn’t Lisette just call the police? We know whodunit! It was the cater waiters! There are, like, multiple eyewitnesses! Go get your stuff back, girl! Honestly. Were those guys, in fact, cater waiters? If not, how did they fool the real caterers?
Were there two of them working together? Were there more? Did every burglar involved have short brown hair and a beard? If the aim is to make it look like a coordinated effort, producers at least could have cast actors who didn’t look like twins.

It’s criminally boring. I think directing is a young person’s game and it shows with Michael Patrick King. He directed some sharp, funny episodes of SATC but without the structure of the the main story and the two subplots taking place over 30 minutes he’s fucking up the pacing. When Anthony or whoever makes a joke over brunch we cut to his table mates laughing. What the hell? That’s not necessary.

Mario Cantone is cringe worthy in this show. Not him necessarily but his character. It's such a short show and I turn away when he is on screen. Can't they give him ANYTHING? Are we to actually believe he has a thriving BREAD business in carb conscious gay New York? Is the only hot gay male stereotype still a Muscle Mary from 2003? I just don't get how this can pass muster in 2023. Like how can you even right such flat jokes around such banal material and allow it to get to the screen? Every single scene, line he is given, is a dated horrible gay punchline from a different era. Giving blowjobs in public? Really? It's really horrible. Datalounge I am sure could come up with more interesting storylines for this relic of a character. Yikes.
And the Miranda muff diving. I am behind an episode, so I just watched episode 2 last night. Gross with a capital G. I have nothing against lesbians. If those two characters had dicks it would still be gross. And as much as they were going on and on with eating the puss in that scene, they show Miranda looking up and laughing at Che with the driest of faces and lip gloss. If you're gonna do it on screen in all of the gross realness of it, commit to it.
And the haling of a cab on the UES in today's world, just so you can get in some black storyline about racism? Both of those little girls are savvy enough in that world to call an Uber, if not their dad. I am black and have experienced that exact same thing - 10 years ago. And even then I was smart enough to stand in front of an approaching cab with my phone up like I am recording their Taxi ID number as the zoom past - they slam on the breaks then. But since Uber, those cabs are definitely stopping for everyone - especially one headed downtown from the UES.
It's just a lot of weak writing. And it's only my interest in the actresses ability to make something out of nothing that keeps my watching.

Nothing about Carrie makes sense anymore. The whole show seems to struggle with how to let these women be rich enough to go to glamorous parties and buy endless designer goods, while giving them contrived conflict, like a schedule to nurse Carrie - as if her insurance/millions wouldn't have covered it??
She inexplicably lives in that tiny, miserable apartment although she can easily afford to live in something with room for a sofa at least. AJLT season 1 started with Carrie in a huge apartment and talk of how she and Big had been cooking and listening to records throughout lockdown. Then last episode she was back in her pokey studio apartment, rejoicing in learning to poach an egg and discovering the stove for cooking. So what exactly were Carrie and Big cooking during lockdown - air fried chicken nuggets?
In this tiny apartment, she has no space to store a lifetime collection of designer clothes and clearly rents storage, which begs the question, why not live in a bigger apartment with enough storage space? And let's wonder why on earth she kept the wedding dress she was jilted in, and happened to have it fresh, ready to repurpose for the Met Gala?
Now this thing with the girl downstairs... with all Big's millions, Carrie could have easily helped this girl out by legit investing in her jewellery line. Never mind though, she'll have to make-do with hugs from her multi-millionaire neighbour instead.

If they wanted to make the show more interesting from the start, they should have made it that Carrie somehow did not get much money when Big died. Either he was sitting on mountains of debt from bad investments or he left it to someone else. Whatever. One of the appeals of the Carrie character was her scrappiness, tastes beyond her wealth, etc.

Between the disconnected plot points and the varying levels of experience and commitment between the actors, this show could not be more disjointed. From Miranda in the tattoo parlor in California, to Carrie reciting the same line over and over in the recording booth for ten minutes, to Seema's stolen bag storyline, it's like I'm watching five completely different shows. There were some good moments in episode three, but unfortunately the closer you get to the center point of the plot (i.e. Carrie & Charlotte) the less interesting it becomes.

R505 it’s kind of a recycled plot that Kim turned down the third movie for where she was allegedly flirting with Brady on a hook-up app.

Steve and Enid show up in the next episode. I remember during the original series Aidan always used to show up around episode five of each season and so perhaps that's still the magic number this time around. The Kim cameo will most likely be in the season finale.

I had to re-watch the jewelry robbery because it was so ridiculous. Given how the thieves were able to make off with everything, I thought they must have been armed but they weren't. Also, a fine jewelry show in the middle of Bryant Park would be crawling with security. It was laughable how casually and openly the cater waiters pocketed the stuff.
Carrie's "quick thinking" to scream she had COVID only added more chaos to the situation. What good did that do? And some nerve she had to comfort Lisette at the end of the episode... She basically created the distraction that helped the thieves get away with Lisette's entire collection.

Another thing that drove me up the wall about this week's episode was how they acted like Miranda's cell phone ring had ruined the take. The scene was done. The last line had been delivered (maybe there were a couple of jokes to go, but the emotional part had been gotten clean) and then the phone rang. Have these people never heard of editing? Cutaways? If they wanted to make it a disaster, then have the ring come in towards the end of the scene but over one of Che's lines so the take really was blown.
It's a small thing, but just one of the many examples of the contempt this writer's room seems to have for its audience. They think the viewers are complete morons. They're lazy as fuck but figure we're too stupid to notice.

the MILF list.
Instead of saying, “Oh,” and moving on with their lives, the moms become obsessed with getting a copy — something Lisa somehow finds time to do in her incredibly busy documentary-making schedule. Charlotte and Lisa seem more than a little pleased to discover they are Nos. 2 and 3 on the list.
The group of ladies find themselves clustered outside the principal’s office before a P.T.A. meeting when they hear the culprit is in the room at that very moment. Eventually, the handsome perpetrator walks out, in slow motion, with the expletive-laden “He Be Like” by KenTheMan playing as he strolls past the slack-jawed moms.
Almost all these women are well into middle age, and we can assume the boy is a minor. It’s an out-of-touch scene, frankly. (We would rightfully have a collective conniption if the scene featured instead a group of dads gawking at a teen girl, right?) It’s followed by one that’s maybe even more tone-deaf, in which Charlotte objects to the principal’s decree that this act of misogyny will stay on Milo’s permanent record. They can’t let it affect his otherwise bright future, can they?
This plotline seems like an attempt at levity, which is appreciated after a first season laced with so much grief. But these scenes just give off the ick.

It's actually Brady Hobbes. There's a couple episode arc in SATC of Miranda deciding to have the baby, she's not with Steve, they agree to the last name Hobbes (thinking she'll be the primary caregiver) and then they bat around a few ideas for first names before settling on Brady. And of course they eventually get back together and marry.

Cynthia loves doing sex scenes.
"I feel like I was always fairly game for it. It's just one of the main subjects of the show is sex — people having sex and people having great sex and people having terrible sex and people having hilarious sex."
Sex and the City was known for pushing boundaries and putting it all out there, but there was one line the franchise decided not to cross.
"Miranda dated a really hot detective who she was very intimidated by, he was really out of her league, so she got wildly drunk," the 57-year-old actress recalled. "They didn't cut that plot, but they cut the sex scene where she's really, really drunk and then vomits all over him."
The storyline came from the season 3 episode "What Goes Around Comes Around," in which Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is mugged and the detective on the case, Detective Stevens (Timothy Gibbs), starts a romance with Miranda.

A minor thing, but the way the head of school was talking to the parents was unrealistic. At these fancy upper Eastside private schools, the administrators kiss the parents’ asses, particularly the very rich or very involved ones.

by Anonymous | reply 554 | July 1, 2023 3:21 PM |
A few reasons, R554. One, some NYC public schools are truly awful, and the process is not so straightforward. It’s not as simple as you just go to the school in your neighborhood, particularly after the elementary years. Parents are scared of bad schools.
Two, clout. Some parents want the wealthy, connected network for themselves and their kids. There is a certain prestige to saying your kid goes to Collegiate or Spence or Trinity or Brearley. Some want that.
Three, college. The top tier private schools place around 30% of their graduates in Ivy League schools, and most of the rest still go to respectable ones. Some of it is because these schools are very advanced and prep them for college better than public. But some of it is an old school game where the college advisers have better connections. And then some of it is connected parents. But the promise of getting your kid into a top college is one of the big draws.

"I don't get why parents spend so much money on these private schools. If your kids are smart they'll do well anywhere"
If you live in a city and working rich (doctor, finance, etc) the schools may be awful. How is it awful? Lots of city kids grow up in poverty--single parents, little supervision. Not saying a poor blue collar person can't do an amazing job as a parent. But some don't do much parenting. These kids have basically just survived but have not been exposed to reading or trained how to behave. The parents leave it to the schools to do that. but its kind of too late--A kid who hasn't been read to until they are 5 years old or taught how to pay attention or be quiet is probably going to have issues learning. Then when homework starts--these kids have no oversight at home. Homework for young children is about the parents doing it with the kid, not the kid handling it on their own. But there's nobody to do it with them.
Inner city schools often teach very little. And when you get to high school, there's no enforcement of kids skipping class and school--since a huge percentage do before dropping out.
Also, you want your kid to learn stuff like instruments and foreign languages in elementary school. Waiting makes it 10x as difficult for them to pick up those skills.

Nixon was more positive about the reasons for bringing the show back after more than a decade away.
“I’m 57 and I feel like the fifties, the perimenopausal, post-menopause, should be, frankly, a really golden time in a woman’s life. [quote]I would vote for president any candidate who would limit hiring from “elite colleges” to their proportion, relative to all college grads.
The elite colleges produce the brightest people in our population in greater proportion to other schools. That is why they are elite. When you have the opportunity to go to an elite school and sharpen yourself next to some of the brightest people in the world, other students, it only makes you better. Let's not start pretending this doesn't still happen. Maybe not at the level it once it, but it still happens. Go to any elite school lecture hall, class, study session - these kids are next level. They have to be to survive.
Of course there are very bright kids at other schools. But a lot of them would be better served working along their equals instead of being the smartest thing on campus. There are many forms of intellect and the elite schools tend to attract all of the diverse forms from kids around the world. And your classmates go on to basically run the worlds in whatever country they come from.
And as far as why someone would pay money for private schools, it's not just the getting into a good college aspect. That goes without saying. I went to a private school. My parents weren't rich. But my friend's parents were, and I was exposed to their world on playdates from a young age, to family ski trips, to life long friendships with kids who went on to take over their parents' companies and have been great contacts to have. Private schools allow access to a world and a life most people don't have access to. At the very least, I learned how to feel comfortable around extreme wealth and not be impressed by it. Whereas some people only entering this world very late at a professional level often have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to wealth and are intimidated / fascinated by it.

I met Kim Cattrall once. We chatted for about ten or fifteen minutes, mostly about the play she was appearing in at the Old Vic in London (Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth). This would have been around 2012 or 2013, I can't recall offhand.
She was much shorter than I expected. I know it's a cliche to say this about actors in general, but in SATC Cattrall always appeared tall and Amazonian, with those sexy broad shoulders and that almost regal bearing, whereas in person she was petite, almost slight. Yet it seemed to me it was all in how she carries herself. I couldn't help thinking just how tiny SJP really must be, since Cattrall in my memory always appeared to tower over her.
Kim had no particular reason to give me the time of day, but she was gracious and unfailingly polite. She struck me as both quite introverted and very earnest about her work.
After we'd talked, it seemed to me that she was one of those people who can appear shy or awkward (not rude, but uncomfortable) in the realm of trivial small talk, but who light up and become fluent and at ease as soon as the conversation turns to a topic of substance which they care about. In her case that day, it was obviously the play.
*Sweet Bird of Youth* is an incredibly dark and unpleasant drama (it makes *A Streetcar Named Desire* look like a comedy) and couldn't have been further from SATC in tone or subject. She spoke about her character with wit and nuance and strong feeling. I came away thinking that she was a much more intense and serious person than I would have expected to meet.
All of that bewitching mix of power and humour and vulnerability that she exudes on screen perhaps flow from just how much she invests of herself. There was a sense, even in that briefest of meetings, that she did nothing by halves. She *cared* about the character. She *cared* to hear how I had experienced the play.
Who am I to judge from one tiny encounter? But my impression ever since then, for what it's worth, is that with all of that introversion, intensity and seriousness probably comes also a vast amount of sensitivity. I felt a bit in awe (starstruck, too, no doubt) and found her terribly interesting and impressive to be around.
By the same token, I also find it is not difficult to imagine such a person having a very difficult time in the film and television industry, and a difficult time working at the centre of a pop culture juggernaut like SATC. The strains and stressors on such a personality type are probably enormous in that context; all that strength of feeling. The other three stars don't strike me as anywhere near as sensitive and complex as Cattrall.
All subjective, these were just my impressions.
