^sometimes I can’t get my head around the fact that to Americans most football stars (besides Ronaldo & David Beckham, for some reason) aren’t household names or even known figures at all.

The idea of not knowing who Steven Gerrard is unthinkable to me—grew up watching him play from toddlerhood, experiencing his ascendancy, and hearing his name sung all over Europe. The heartache of his infamous slip on the grass was felt around the globe.

In fact, I’m pretty confident that it’s hard to find a native adult of today in Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Argentina, Portugal & Brazil who doesn’t know who Gerrard is (kids younger than 15/16 may not know or care tbf, he retired several years ago).

Suppose it’s the same as an American telling me all about a mega-famous 2000s-2010s MLB or NFL legend. It’s 99% likely I won’t recognise and or have heard of them (especially if they aren’t a DL Fave).
