People jog or run half-naked in places they'd never walk alone.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 2, 2022 10:05 PM |
I used to run after dark, even starting fairly late, but I've aged out of it. It's not because I REALLY think anything is going to happen, but my sense of unease is greater, so why bother - I can run when it's light out in areas where others are or I can go to the gym after dark. I guess I will still run and walk in the dark during the height of winter - when it's dark very early. But then I'll got to a park where a lot of people are getting their walks and runs in relatively early.

Something about this story stood out to me. Because people don’t just go around getting shoved into vans.

If someone tries to 'force' you to walk somewhere, get in a vehicle, etc.- just drop to the ground. Your weight is your advantage; not many are going to drag you. Your legs are for kicking, your nails are for scratching (DNA) and your mouth is for screaming. That's all you have. They may taze you, knife you or shoot you anyway, but don't help them abduct you.
The worst thing you can do is the 'please don't hurt me I'll do anything you want'. You won't survive.
If they carjack you and make you drive, drive into another car or into a crowd. Floor it and drive 120 mph. Lay on the horn. Take the keys out of the ignition and throw them out the window.

R32: The wedding piece is hilarious, with all the "product placement" and the stylist "formerly of Nieman Marcus" who came up from Atlanta, which I'm sure means he's the height of chic (the Nieman Marcus in Atlanta had huge signs for the different designers because the status seekers there are too dumb to recognize the real things; their other stores don't do that).
Not much info on Richie's background besides being a navy brat. The marriage sounds stormy. He tries to come across as churchy and they met at church. No mention of an occupation--only that he's a long distance biker and if his t-shirts are an indication, a crossfit cultist. The marriage sounds troubled, from its early days.

I wonder if there's a dentist in the family or is that some sort of horrible Southern upper class upbringing thing.
Richie was a crossfit instructor when they married and has had pretty low level jobs for the hubby of an heiress, without a real career trajectory. It sounds like he's a boat salesman now, He has a degree in "project management" (whatever that is) from a Southern Baptist university

R13, I did see someone get shoved into a van in Jersey City, and while rare, it does happen. I wrote about this before on Datalounge. It was in the winter, around 6:00 p.m. so it was already dark, but there were a lot of people on the street, which is one of the main drags right by the train station. A van pulled up to the left of me. Three guys jumped out of the van and grabbed a man who was walking less than 5 ft in front of me. They pulled him into the van and drove off. I stood there, stunned, and got my phone out to call 911. While I was talking to 911 I saw, right ahead of me, the van which had stopped at a red light. I was able to give 911 the van's license plate number and the direction where they were going. I always wondered what happened to that man and why he was kidnapped (there is no doubt it was a kidnapping) and if the police ever caught them. I looked and looked for about 2 weeks in the online city newspapers and I could find no mention of this incident. It's still upsets me and creeps me out.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 3, 2022 1:50 PM |
I know murder is more serious than abduction, but if the husband really wanted his best chance at making this all work out - getting the money - then he should have had her killed point blank and not shoved into a car. Obviously, I'm not advocating for any of this, but how could this possibly work out if she returns at some point? She'll probably have to be killed anyway. Or she's already dead. This will be a good DL thread. I'm always fascinated at the delusions and desperation of criminals such that they really believe that it will all work out.

Coked up underemployed husband married to an heiress and having an affair with the nanny?
The wife is not merely dead, she's sincerely dead.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 3, 2022 2:22 PM |
So from what I’ve learned, at least 2 people are involved in her kidnapping.
One driver, and the second person who grabbed her off the street.
Allegedly, the husband is shady AF, has a bad blow habit and owes some money to his dealers. He was allegedly banging the nanny, who’s 22.
She comes from a very wealthy, prominent family, & kicked the husband to the curb, due to his bad habit and cheating.
As soon as the TBI and FBI got involved, the investigation immediately focused on her home, and specifically, electronic devices and other items belonging to the husband, including his car.
The garden shears is odd. What do those shears have? Blood? Blood from a previous fight they may have had that turned physical?
Someone who was confided in, obviously stepped forward and spilled the beans regarding intimate details about this marriage.
Both nanny and husband have been questioned by multiple LEO agencies, and the husband lawyered up immediately.
This is probably not a random grab, & snatch/rape/murder scenario.
The command post is centered in her home. Which means this is probably a professional kidnapping.
The husband’s really shady looking. He seems very unconnected to her in all the photos I’ve seen. But I don’t believe he’s smart enough to pull this off.
Maybe people who he hangs out with, who deal him his drugs, are smart enough to pull this off.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 3, 2022 2:44 PM |
Keep in mind that people pair off with others of similar emotional development. This doesn't excuse the husband if he's the perp, but it helps set the stage.
They're both probably pretty superficial and unable to cope very well with stress or life's difficulties. He had his substance use problem, she probably had an eating disorder and/or obsessive exercise routine (they often go together). She was getting too old to be on the marriage market and he was outwardly presentable (conventionally good looking, fit, gainfully employed or so it would appear). She may have seemed too needy for the others in her social circle or perhaps she had a rebellious streak or poor judgement and tended to pick bums. The family probably wasn't too happy with him, but they probably also spoiled her and were willing too overlook his shortcomings because he made her happy and she wasn't getting any younger. She probably discovered there was a lot she didn't really know about him. Having money gave her power in the relationship (which she probably liked) but it also was emasculating. He probably liked being able to buy toys (like boats) and blow while not having to be too ambitious.
The separation and probable divorce upset all this. She had her family and her money on which to fall back. He would have lots of woes, especially if there were debts (drug or otherwise). Divorce is probably still a bit of a disgrace in some circles. Presbyterians were among the last of the big Protestant denominations to accept it (viewing it as a failure) and they belonged to a fundie-ish branch of the church. My Catholic relatives accepted divorce well before the Presbyterians. It's probably a big step for both of them and a big loss of face for her.

R66, the DailyMail mentions it and shows a few photos of them with their towhead toddlers. She has a job “teaching junior kindergarten” (preschool), which probably explains why she was jogging so early in the morning.
Although why leave your kids with a nanny, just to go be a nanny somewhere else? I bet the nanny cost more than she was being paid. Why not just spend the time with your own kids?

The husband is HIDEOUS looking.
She could easily have found a more suitable partner.
He doesn’t even look like he’s into her in most photos.
He just looks like a party boy, hill billy type.
She probably thought she was in love because he made her laugh, or something stupid like that.
She definitely married down.
But the one thing that does strike me odd about her?
The way she smiles in photos.
WTF is that all about???
Also, I’m calling it. Due to the high profile buzz this case is immediately receiving, if she wasn’t set up for the kidnapping by her husband, she’s never going to be found, dead or alive.

Her house is in Central Gardens, which is the nicest part of Midtown Memphis (all things considered) and where she was kidnapped is several miles away. I guess if you were going jogging at 4:00 am, a busy road like Central Avenue would be the best option…but I just don’t see this being a random act. I talked to some friends in Central Gardens last night. Everyone is abuzz about it, and word was out already about him being a coke head and banging the nanny. She teaches at St. Mary’s, one of the most elite schools in Memphis.
For our Tasteful Friends, here is a house for sale around the corner from her house.

by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 3, 2022 4:31 PM |
I am not blaming her, but I wish women were more discerning when choosing a husband. She was an heiress for god's sake, she must have known men would be after her money. I also think of Brittany Murphy, if she had vetted her husband she would know he was a scumbag and would suck her dry. There is still so much pressure for women to marry a man, any man, even if they are wealthy themselves and don't need the financial support.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 3, 2022 4:31 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 135 | September 3, 2022 4:49 PM |
Too lazy to look up comparative stats but doesn't this seem like a lot of kidnappings?
Three children were abducted in Whitehaven on Sept. 2 and were later found three miles away. A mother and her one-year-old were abducted last weekend near Wolfchase and forced to withdraw money from an ATM before being released. And on Aug. 18, two children were kidnapped and later recovered by police in South Memphis.
There have been at least 100 incidents classified as kidnapping in Memphis this year, according to public safety data posted on the city's website.

A lot of kidnappings or a very unmotivated serial killer.

Anyone who remembers the 89s recalls the moral panic over "child abductions" which mostly are disgruntled parents in a custody fight or "missing children" who often were runaways or simply got lost.
She's a wealthy person in a bad marriage, the starting place for the investigation will be the husband. Unlike the Target incident, they didn't make her use the ATM. The subtle race baiting is a nice touch, but the husband is probably directly involved in some way.

My wife and I live over in Uptown Memphis.
Memphis has an unmerciful crime rate on all fronts and there is also a great deal of poverty here.
My wife is not allowed to walk to work over at Saint Jude's because it's too dangerous even though it's really close to where we live. I put my foot down on that.
I'm really tall and have studied Kung Fu for ages and would not jog anywhere in Memphis at 4 in the morning. Central Gardens is beautiful but the poor dear should have bought a treadmill.
That Episcopalian Church made mention of upthread is very liberal. They do a very great deal for the homeless and those in need with no questions asked. I'm not of that religion but I'm just saying.
This is a Keith Morrison type situation here. But, crimes are here 24/7. I dunno. This is fishy and is being heavily put out there on the news because of the family involved.

It’s a little surprising to me that the police have not issued n update or press conference. Especially since the fbi reportedly was called in almost right away ( likely due to the wealthy family). All the news reports that come up in my google search are close to 24 hours old. Also, the first thing family and friend like to do are those organized search parties. None of that seem to have developed either.
Are there any local Tennessee folks here that can talk about recent local reports?

Bottom line?
The cops know who did, but the person who did it ain’t talking and right now, they’re attempting to negotiate with the person who is responsible, but the person isn’t budging.
So they’re now at a stage of attempting to recover any evidence in order to recover a body.

Aha! Caught a frau!
Eliza Fletcher is in her mid-30s, already had children and is a muscled stringy runner type. Nobody wants that for a sex slave. There are dumb teenagers who go willingly - in bad neighborhoods, where people are afraid to call police. Why go to all the trouble of abducting an affluent woman forcibly, just to turn her out?
Someone abducted her because they were paid to get her and kill her. Or they wanted to rape and kill her for fun. She’s not being held in a motel for sex commerce. That makes zero sense.

My bet is now that it is not the husband paying for this killing. If her clothes have been found but not her this sounds like a sex assault situation. Unless it’s staged to look like that but the husband doesn’t look smart enough and likely he’d just have her shot and the shooter take off fast if he wants to get rid of her.

Cleotha was kidnapping people at gunpoint when he was sixteen.
[quote]Sixteen months after he was kidnapped at gunpoint and thrown into the trunk of his car, attorney Kemper Durand watched with some regret last week as two juveniles involved in the case were given prison sentences.
[quote]Durand was walking to his car around 2 a.m. on May 25, 2000, after attending a par ty on Beale Street when a lone gunman walked up behind him, took his wallet, and forced him into the trunk. The abductor, Cleotha Abston, drove around and picked up friends then, after about two hours, escorted Durand into a Mapco station to withdraw money from an ATM. A uniformed Memphis Housing Authority officer entered, Durand yelled that he had been kidnapped, and the kidnappers ran away.
[quote]On Monday, Abston pled guilty just before he was scheduled to go to trial and was sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole. He had earlier turned down an offer of 15 years on the same charge but, according to Durand, told the court Òhe did not want to sign his name giving himself the time.Ó Abston has a long juvenile record of theft and aggravated assault.

by Anonymous | reply 333 | September 4, 2022 9:31 AM |
This is how "especially aggravated" is defined...
When a kidnapping is committed in one of the following circumstances, it becomes especially aggravated kidnapping:
Accomplished with a deadly weapon or something that a victim would reasonably believe is a deadly weapon;
Where the victim is under the age of 13;
Committed to hold the victim for a ransom or reward;
Committed to use the victim as a shield or hostage; or
Where the victim suffers serious bodily injury.
Especially aggravated kidnapping is a Class A felony punishable by 15 to 60 years in prison and a maximum fine of $50,000.

I'll be happy for his kids if the husband didn't arrange it (or didn't owe the perpetrators money). People suspect the spouse because that's usually who is involved, especially when factors like money are in play, never mind the rumors about drugs, infidelity and troubled pasts. That doesn't mean crimes of opportunity and random acts of violence don't also exist. All of those things are far more common than hoaxes.

Which is what I was saying all along. I know that stats and chances are it could be the husband but Memphis is a very dangerous city with a hundred kidnappings a year. If some of the keystone cops on this thread were in the Memphis police force the husband and nanny would be in jail right now while this convicted felon with a history of abductions makes it across 10 state lines.

How could one person get her in the car, and drive away, while keeping her from jumping out of the vehicle, unless he pistol whipped her into unconsciousness? This guy's MO is a trip to the nearest ATM. So much of this doesn't make sense.

You guys are right. The husband has major BDF.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | September 4, 2022 3:05 PM |
R366, A man can almost always overpower a woman with just force. He could’ve punched her, used chloroform, who knows. His MO with a male victim is the ATM, he wasn’t after money with this woman. Cars also have those locks on the driver’s side that lock the locks of the doors. Sounds like the brother is a meth dealer, would think he was involved, but they’re saying no right now.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | September 4, 2022 3:16 PM |
Chloroform? He could have knocked her out with one punch. But I’m not disagreeing. I think he has an accomplice; someone who was driving. And I haven’t cleared the husband, although it’s looking less likely. Husband could have hired them, Pastor Davey-style.

by Anonymous | reply 376 | September 4, 2022 3:57 PM |
Bullshit, R351.
As well as to you other mouth breathers on here blaming her for her own abduction, and most probably, her own demise.
You all know why this shit happened. Because there are PLENTY of fucked up, straight white and black men, as well as men from ALL races, who are too fucked up to see women as valuable human beings, and instead, see them as nothing but stupid bitches who deserve what they get, when harm befalls them.
You fucked up trolls come on to a gay website, to wage war against women. You’re sick, and need to grow the fuck up.
And what’s even worse, is that many of you here who do this, are straight incels, who blame women because you made decisions to live your lives behind keyboards and computer screens, eating shitty food, and became fat fucks who smell like sewage, when in fact, you’re too lazy and socially inept, to get the fuck up, groom yourselves and hit the mother fucking gym, or do something that takes MAJOR discipline like this poor lady was doing, by training for a marathon, which you cunts will NEVER do, unless one day you get struck over the head by lightning or suffer some brain injury, which drastically changes your personalities.
She didn’t deserve this. She wasn’t looking for this. She, like MANY women who get up super early to commute to work, or exercise and commute to work later, was attempting to live a normal, healthy life, and fulfill her goals and dreams.
The villain here is the man, who without an ounce of forethought or moral/ethical character, decided to jump out of his car in a split second, and wreck the life a woman who had ambitions, while wrecking the lives of her kids and family, as well.
Stop blaming women who are good and decent people, for becoming victims to the lowest of low men out there.
Grow the fuck up.
Grow some empathy, like you grew your assured gut, after years of eating nothing but pure shit.
Yep. I’m mad. I’m sick of men coming on here and all over the internet, constantly attempting to shit on women just because they can’t fuck one, or think that they’re somehow stealing dick from gay men who aren’t mentally healthy enough, to understand that straight men can’t help wanting to be sexually active with women, which is why they’re straight!
Fuck any of you here who cannot set aside your bullshit, and have some compassion for a lady you’ve never met, yet most assuredly went through fucking hell, for the last few hours of her life.

Its funny but ive been saying for years that the PTB want us to be afraid of brown people 1000s of miles away yet Im way more afraid of the homegrown sociopaths we seem to bred. Until black people own the fact that a small segment of their population are responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crimes they will never reach the place they want to be. That hasnt got shit to do with racism and everything to do with a lack of humanity.Something is very wrong with young black men.Not all of them,of course but way too many .

R377 why are you on DL if you hate men so much? Jesus Christ. In a perfect world sure. In reality - not the case. Everyone (not just women) take precautions. And if they don’t - they put themselves at risk. It’s horrible but it’s true.

R384: for a blonde white woman to be jogging in a “bra and tiny shorts”, also known as workout gear, at 4:30 am is not “entitlement”. I don’t think you understand what that word means.
Also, you misogynists need to make up your mind, either women “hate” men by having to think of them as potential rapists/murderers and live their life accordingly, or they don’t, and if they get hurt/killed in their fault because they MUST know that men will murder them if they jog at 4:30 am.

About two years ago I received information from a broker about a delightful home half an hour south of Memphis. It has been too long to recall details but the home was an architectural delight, fairly new construction, and with about 20 acres of mostly flat land and forest. The only issue was proximity to Memphis.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | September 4, 2022 4:36 PM |
R387- Yes it is her fault that she placed herself in such a dangerous and vulnerable position and I say that as a woman. Whoever kidnapped her and possibly killed her is ultimately to blame, but let's not pretend that jogging at 4:00 AM alone wasn't a very reckless decision on her part. Are we not allowed to hold people responsible for their decisions now?

Financial question:
If Eliza is no longer alive, and it’s true that Eliza’s grandmother bequeathed Eliza money through a will that is in probate, will the inheritance eventually go to Eliza’s husband?
Does my question make sense? If Eliza had not yet received any inheritance and she died before it was out of probate does someone else inherit the money or would it go to her husband/children since she was alive at the time of the Grandmother’s death.

by Anonymous | reply 391 | September 4, 2022 5:05 PM |
Families with generational wealth often structure things to keep money within the family. Trusts are usually in place so if the heir or heiress dies, their wealth is kept from the spouse and preserved for their offspring.

[quote] Are we not allowed to hold people responsible for their decisions now?
It's a question of how much responsibility we attribute to the victim or the criminal. Usually if the victim is female she gets more shit for any error she makes. If a man walks down the street wearing a Rolex and gets mugged, the blame quickly goes to the mugger. Every guy should be able to wear a Rolex on the street, that's why you buy a Rolex!
This woman was taking a risk jogging in the dark in skimpy clothes. But woman get raped and killed in broad daylight sitting in a car. Being a woman going anywhere is riskier than being a man. I have a female friend who disguises herself when she goes jogging--hair stuffed in a cap, loose clothing, no earbuds, always looking around as she runs. The SUV that Eliza was pulled into had passed her and then stopped. That's when you turn around and run the other way. This doesn't mean she deserves the shit she's getting in some of these posts.
by Anonymous | reply 393 | September 4, 2022 5:14 PM |
R393- I agree with you. She did put herself in a very vulnerable position but she also certainly did not deserve what happened to her. Both things can be true.

r376, It sounds like the name of someone's grandmother.
r386 - That's cute for them. They'd still get their ass handed to them by the average male. Hell, even professional female MMA fighters have had their asses handed to them by male fighters. This is real life, not some Hollywood movie where a waif like Angelina Jolie can beat the shit out of a man built like Jason Statham.
r387 - These days, exercise gear for women is nothing more than glorified skin-tight underwear that shows every nook and cranny of their body. If you want to wear that, fine, but don't wear it and complain that one of the many toxic as hell straight men roaming this country aren't going to misinterpret that as you looking for sexualized attention from them. We live in reality, not in a utopia. Just like you wouldn't go to a rough area deck out in jewels like an ancient Maharaja if you don't want to be robbed, don't flounce around in rough neighborhoods in revealing clothing as a woman if you don't want to receive negative sexual attention. It sucks for females, but it's the truth.

Memphis is a ghetto shithole full of feral blacks who behave as if they're still in the jungle. If you go out alone at night in Memphis you're taking your life in your own hands. Anyplace that has a population of feral, animalistic blacks means you either avoid it entirely or you take extreme precautions so you don't end up as their prey.

R390 That Orgill family is easily worth a billion dollars. I'm sure that it's covered.
I tell y'all what, though. Memphis truly has a really high crime rate. Down here one has to be extra super careful and just balance that nicely so as to not be a Karen or whatever. My wife and I truly try to stay balanced and are congenial towards most anyone we meet but being a pedestrian in Memphis as well as other such things is dangerous.
Memphis is kinda like the larger cities of Brazil. Walk or drive a wee bit past a nice neighborhood and then you hit somewhere quite poverty stricken and sometimes really dangerous as well. I grew up over in Barranquilla, Colombia in the 1980's so I know what I'm talking about with super high crime rates and all.
This might just have sadly wound up being a random crime. I dunno. Because of the wealth involved there could be a ransom or something. I dunno. Lotta money with this, the only other family down here with that wealth would easily be Fred Smith's family because of FedEx. They brought out all the stops quick for this lady and I get it but only to a degree deep down.

I know that we cannot understand this, as we’re not psychopaths, but can you imagine?
You’re driving down a street, and suddenly, you see a woman jogging down the street, and something within you prompts you to stop the car, grab her and kill her.
I mean, what was he doing previously? Driving to work? Getting breakfast at McDonald’s? And then suddenly, BOOM’
“Oh look! I’m gonna grab this lady here and murder her”!
Full stop. Like there’s nothing more after this thought. Nothing like, “Nah. I better get to work”, or “It’s Labor Day weekend, I’m gonna chill and grill some steaks with my friends”.

There’s a good chance he beat her to death because she had no money or and ATM card, and she refused to tell him where she lived, so that he could go there and demand money, jewelry, demand she or the husband drive him to the ATM or he’d kill the kids, etc.
If he was out looking for someone to rob, rather than just being a sexually motivated car, my theory is as good as any, and it makes sense that he held her in the car for 4 minutes, as he probably pummeled her to death, while she resisted doing what he wanted, which was to get her to drive him to her house, for a major robbery, which may have ended up even worse than this.

I’m black and my sister is a regular marathon runner. She is a nurse, so she often runs at 4am. She is paranoid AF and carries pepper spray and a ring with a knife like device on it. I pity the fool that tries to fuck with her.

R456 If he wanted to keep it simple, he could have taken her phone and ring and left it at that. It’s possible he wanted her to tell him where she lived so he could go and rob the place.

[QUOTE] It's a question of how much responsibility we attribute to the victim or the criminal. Usually if the victim is female she gets more shit for any error she makes. If a man walks down the street wearing a Rolex and gets mugged, the blame quickly goes to the mugger. Every guy should be able to wear a Rolex on the street, that's why you buy a Rolex!
R393 People nowadays are painfully naive and trusting of strangers. No common sense and an entitlement complex, especially in women. Maybe because I had parents who always thought of the worst-case scenarios, maybe because they grew up lower middle class in the old country, there was a lot of instruction growing up on avoiding reckless behaviors. Running at odd hours and in isolated places was a huge no. So was driving late at night. The rule of thumb was if it was after 1 am, stay put at where you are, and you can leave at dawn. 2 am was when bars closed, so a lot of drunks out at that time. Stuff like that.
As for your Rolex example, we’ve had friends get mugged and we all blamed them for their recklessness. You wear your good stuff in PRIVATE settings with similarly affluent people, not out in public so that you can be a target. Rolex at a country club wedding? Sure! Rolex at your Walmart run at 10 pm? No!
There’s no excuse for criminal behavior but you need to act in a way that puts the odds in your favor. The world isn’t made of sunshine and roses and peaches and cream. There are evil, violent and ruthless people out there who have zero regard for human life.
It is incredibly stupid to go for a run at 4 am, especially for a woman. If I was an heiress, I’d have a home gym and lap pool and not deal with the motherfucking riffraff.

No one is going to argue with that, it's a cliche.
What I'm saying is crimes against women often throw more attention on the victim than the criminal. Women who are raped, even violently, have their past sexual behavior and drinking habits brought up as evidence they were asking for it. No man who is mugged is grilled about how many times he walked down that street ALONE wearing those fine clothes.

Karina Vetrano was jogging in broad daylight on a popular running trail. The crazy motherfucker who beat her to death was just a sick fucker who wanted to hurt someone. I am still shocked that he wasn’t shown to the border by the residents of that neighborhood. Poor Karina. We have driven by that nature preserve where she was killed, and it’s quite beautiful.
I will admit that I was wrong about who killed her, but I still maintain that there was a very odd dynamic in her family, and she was a sugar baby.

R470 has it right. You can't make yourself bulletproof, but you don't make yourself an easy mark either. I scratched one of those ignorant "family silhouette" stickers off my niece's car last weekend. It showed a woman with a kid and a dog; an advertisement for rape, or worse, in her city. It's stupid to flout the laws of reality in this current crime-filled climate.

You are exactly right, R476. As a military veteran, I am entitled to have a FL red-white-and-blue "veteran" license plate on my vehicles at no extra charge, and I have one on my truck. But now there's a "woman veteran" tag as well. It's not particularly eye-catching and looks a lot like a similar "surfer picture" tag, but that's not why I won't get one. I never, ever want any random stranger to know I am a woman riding a motorcycle (or even driving a car) alone. Lots of (I assume straight) women wear pink motorcycle helmets and other gear and (heaven forbid) even ride pink or purple motorcycles. AFAIC, they're asking for trouble.
These days, you just never know.

As someone from the south, I've been warned about Memphis numerous times throughout my life. It's on par with Little Rock, Atlanta, and Birmingham as some of the most dangerous cities. Atlanta obvi has the most human trafficking so it's the most dangerous for young women and girls, but obviously Memphis is just a day's drive away. I'm not attempting to victim blame, I think women should be able to run naked at 2 in the morning completely drunk without something bad happening to them. But traffickers probably lurk around colleges because they know a bunch of young women like to jog there, and nobody will be awake at 4:30 to see them attack. I don't jog in public anyways because the pavement is hard on my knees and I'm worried I'll get run over.

The language used in the NY Post article about the violent nature of the abduction makes it seem like the guy might have been laying in wait for her on what is described as Eliza’s “usual jogging route”.
Is it possible he stalked her for a day or two after spotting her running one day?
Has anyone else heard language from any other news source that made it sound like he was already waiting for her to run by that day?
Here is how the Post phrased it:
“Fletcher, 34, was abducted on her regular 4 a.m. jog Friday after stalked by Cleotha Abston, who’d waited for her to run past him, the police affidavit alleged. She had run from her home in the fancy Central Gardens neighborhood to a nice area near the University of Memphis campus.”
(There’s also this about his criminal record: “Court records show Abston, 38, is a previously convicted kidnapper: he pleaded guilty to especially aggravated kidnapping and robbery in 2001. He was sentenced to 24 years and 11 years in prison respectively, although it is unclear how long he remained incarcerated and if he served his sentences concurrently.”)

by Anonymous | reply 521 | September 5, 2022 5:13 AM |
Hi r520. I will have to dig for it but really need to get to bed. I skimmed Reddit about this abduction but didn’t stick around as some of it was crazier than a few of the people who were here before. Anyway one poster did have a YouTube video of a quick interview a cop did with reporters on Friday afternoon I think. Anyway, the reporter asked her for information about complaints that the university women’s cross country running team had about a line man in a black SUV who was harassing some of the women during their early morning practice runs. The cop deflected the question.
I saw the video and will try and find it to post here. If this is correct this guy was lurking around the campus already and maybe waiting for a line runner. The x county runners eventually spread out vs being in a huge pack. So true he was maybe waiting but not necessarily specifically stalking Liza. The complaints happened 2 weeks ago.
by Anonymous | reply 522 | September 5, 2022 5:14 AM |
The abduction itself sounds terrifying and I’m not sure what chance she had against this guy, especially after he started “running towards her aggressively” as they put it in the affidavit.
The struggle was so bad that he left his Champ slider shoes behind at the crime scene (shoes that cops later matched his DNA from, from their criminal database) and she lost her phone there—both items were found at the scene on the street by a biker less than an hour later who had no idea what happened and (I guess using info on her phone?) brought the items to Eliza’s house to give to her husband and family.
The husband must have realized instantly that something horrible likely happened to his wife when he received those two items.
From the Post article:
“Tennessee authorities obtained surveillance footage of the kidnapping, which allegedly showed Abston running “aggressively toward the victim, and then force the victim Eliza Fletcher into the passenger’s side of the vehicle,” the documents said.
“During the abduction, there appeared to be a struggle,” according to the affidavit, which cited “noticeable damage to the back-passenger taillight area” of the GMC Terrain.
Police said after Fletcher — who is still missing — was forced into the black SUV, “the vehicle then sat in the parking lot with the victim inside for approximately four minutes before it drove off.”
by Anonymous | reply 523 | September 5, 2022 5:15 AM |
A “lone” man in a black suv^
I should also point out that this description was given and the YouTube video was two days old on Sunday afternoon. So back that up to Friday mid day and there was less info out there about the attacker being alone and in a black suv. That is chilling.

by Anonymous | reply 528 | September 5, 2022 5:27 AM |
More info about the guy seemingly waiting there for her (or some female jogger) to run by, the fact that this wasn’t even his car (it belonged to the cleaning company he worked for), and the Good Samaritan finding his shoes and her phone in the street at 6:45am (sorry I said it was found “less than an hour after the kidnapping”; I misread it. The items were actually found a little over 2hrs later by the biker...)
From the article:
“As the abduction was violent with, as captured on video, the suspect waiting for, then rushing towards the victim, then forcing the victim into the car, where she was confined and removed and continues to be missing, it is believed and supported by the facts and physical evidence that she suffered serious injury,” the affidavit said.”
According to the document, at 6:45 a.m., good Samaritan Miles Fortas was riding his bike when he found Fletcher’s cell phone and a pair of Champion slide sandals in the area where the mom of two was kidnapped. Fortas, unaware of what had occurred, gave the items to the Fletcher family, who then turned them over to authorities.
“DNA found on the shoes matched DNA for Cleotha Abston” that was already in a police database, according to the affidavit.
Authorities said they found footage of Abston wearing Champion slides the day before the alleged kidnapping. They also said his cell phone pinged near the site of the Friday kidnapping.”
The car apparently belongs to a local cleaning service that employed Abston.
Officers arrested him after finding him standing in the doorway of his home.”

Yeah r529 and also what I have pieces to father is that the found him at the door of the brothers place and he fled and got into the suv to take off but was stopped by the ATF vehicle they describe. Maybe, if they were there at the same time. Keeper was born in 1939 so he was -about 74 when he died and likely retired almost 10 years before that. It’s a major law firm in a small city and her family is socially connected obviously due to significant wealth. People know each other. In this case likely distantly. And it’s far to convoluted a relationship to suggest there is anything meaningful to the attack and likely death of this poor lady.

More info about the guy seemingly waiting there for her (or some female jogger) to run by, the fact that this wasn’t even his car (it belonged to the cleaning company he worked for),
Insane that a convict got a job at all with a twenty year prison record. But they also gave him an SUV to tool around in whenever/wherever he wanted. Shows you just how desperate the situation is right now re. service workers. Business will hire anything.

So the abductor was wearing Champion slides? Who wears flip flops to an abduction?

So the cops didn’t do anything when people tried to being this to their attention in the months leading up to this?
We are seeing stories all over the country of the fall out from the silent police strike and their refusal to do any police work.
I hope suburban women remember this when it comes time to vote in Nov. these Republican police unions have got to go and their Republican masters.

Everyone who should have been responsible will cover up the complaint reported by the x country women’s team.

What republican masters? Memphis is a democrat voting city by two to one.
The following is the breakdown of the rank and file of the MPD.
African American/Black: 52%
White: 47%
Hispanic: 1%

According to Shelby County jail records, the suspect goes by the name Cleotha “Pookie” Abston. A Facebook page for Pookie Abston, of south Memphis, says he is also known as “Wild Child.” The profile picture is a gun with the phrase “Wild Mob.”

Anyone who commits a crime with a gun (or any weapon, for that matter), needs to be imprisoned for life, not serve 11 years of a 20-year sentence. So many of the crimes in my community are committed by perps with rap sheets longer than their arms. Lock 'em away forever, society needs to be protected from them.

Police are hunting for the men who kidnapped a mom and her one-year-old from outside a target in a brazen midday robbery in Memphis - just days before a billionaire heiress was snatched off the same city's streets.
According to a Facebook post by the Memphis Police Department, the mom was putting groceries into her car outside the Target store when she and her child were hijacked on August 31.
She and her one-year-old were forced into a car after being threatened by the men, who were brandishing a handgun and demanding cash.
According to WREG-TV, one of the suspects sat in the front seat with the mom while the other sat in the back with her child.
They made the mom withdraw $800 from an ATM at Regions Bank half a mile down highway 64.
The terrifying ordeal was then over, as they released the mom and child afterwards, handing her back her card and dropping them off at the same Target where they were abducted. She then went inside to tell a staff member what had happened.

^^^Well, at least that one got away.
I've been saying for years now that home invasions and kidnappings (to ATM's) is the wave of the future for petty criminals. They can't get anything by stealing wallets and handbags anymore. No one carries cash.

LOL. Oh, my sides @ R555. You think it's Republicans who are at fault for "defund the police?". You're dumber than a box of rocks.

I have to question her judgement jogging at 4:30 am. She must have been a bit complacent. Also, was the area known for joggers and a good part of town? It does seem like a crime of opportunity.

The NY post claimed it was a nice area.

Can we talk about how butt ass ugly the kidnapper/killer is? Just like George Floyd, with the wide nose and huge lips, he looks like a racist caricature of a black man.

There was a homegurl who lived in Pookie's apartment complex that was posting pics of the search teams, police, etc on social media in exchange for donations sent to her cash app. She actually said she needed money for a new iPhone, oh, and said she was hongry and that she be craving crablegs.

He sounds pretty intelligent.
"On the second Facebook page, which is in the name of Cleo Real, he wrote, “Don’t loose your Queen Bee, chasing a butterfly, and end up with a roach. Let us spray!😄”"
"Another post said: “Mfs always see my folks and be on some wats up with pookie wats up wit wild like they really f*** wit a n**** but don’t f*** wit no n**** I been gone all this time and have a FB page MF if u f*** with me u would’ve made sure I was straight fym get tf out of here with that bs been doin this shyt by my mfn self I’m screaming F*** u n**** and b****** keep the same energy wen they free me..”"

by Anonymous | reply 574 | September 5, 2022 3:15 PM |
Why am I triggered, R571? Did you call the posters who cracked on the victims’ Predatoresque smile triggered too?
The killer is ugly as fuck, and has that thuggish/criminal vibe that is best to be avoided altogether if you want to stay out of trouble or see the next day.
Negative stereotypes about black people exist because of the preponderance of hood rats wreaking havoc all over America, just like this scum. Kindly fuck off with the holier-than-thou wokism.

Yes. I think she died in the four minutes the SUV was parked, per the camera footage.

He strangled her
by Anonymous | reply 577 | September 5, 2022 3:23 PM |
Seems odd that he would just kidnap her and kill her so quickly. Rape? Won't know until a body is found.
by Anonymous | reply 578 | September 5, 2022 3:24 PM |
She fought. Hard. He probably wasn't expecting that. The man wore flip flops... He clearly thought it would be a piece of cake.
by Anonymous | reply 579 | September 5, 2022 3:25 PM |
R578, if she put up a huge fight he probably just killed her. I’m not convinced he didn’t rape her, but if he didn’t then that’s why.
