So he'd been in prison for kidnapping a woman before? These types certainly never learn from prison, do they?

Why didn’t the cops do anything with the reports that came in leading up to this event.

Is the media asking them questions and holding them accountable?

by Anonymousreply 5September 5, 2022 4:53 PM

At age 16, kidnapped a man in 2000 at gun point and threw him into a trunk for two hours, stopping at an ATM to force him to draw money. The man yelled when he saw a security person and Abston fled but was caught and sentenced to about 24 years. He got out in July 2020.

by Anonymousreply 6September 5, 2022 4:54 PM

This was in the older thread but here is a YouTube of a quick police interview on Friday early afternoon. Some concerns raise about a similarity between the suspect and some complaints from the university women’s x country running team nearby. Cop brushed it off. Again, this was Friday when not nearly as much was known in public about suspect etc.

Tennessee Ban-the-Box Law

In 2016, Senate Bill 2440 was signed into law. This is Tennessee's ban-the-box law, which prohibits public employers from conducting pre-employment background checks during the initial stages of the hiring process and 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂𝒔𝒌 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒋𝒐𝒃 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔.

The victim was in recovery? Running provides a natural high. Runners can be obsessive about running. The victim had probably ran at that time regularly without an issue. I wouldn't recommend anyone run alone that time of day but don't think that it is strange that she did.

The suspect is a creep. Usually when a crime is committed and the suspect picked up, neighbors are in disbelief. His neighbors will be surprised if he didn't do it.

by Anonymousreply 24September 5, 2022 9:18 PM

Neighbors already pegged him as a creep. Offering females a hundred bucks for sex - with no success supposedly. I guess he thought he had a lot of sex (with women at least) to catch up on if he was arrested by 16 and came out at 36. So he got violent.

He looks soulless.

The much more active troll on here is Matt-facto, who likes to call herself “Defacto.” That specimen is a greasy wop and a self-hating gay rightwinger. She hates black people and she hates her own sexuality, so she hates yours too.

'You'll find they're all perpetrators of something. My wife's son stayed locked up. Mario is arrested now for drugs and carrying a gun. And Cleo, I'm 100 percent sure he had something to do with her abduction. “

by Anonymousreply 49September 6, 2022 1:49 AM

He was certainly busy after getting out of jail the first time. From CNN:

“Three additional charges were added for Abston since his arrest Saturday, according to Shelby County Jail Records. Those charges include identity theft, theft of property $1000 or less and fraudulent use/illegal possession of a credit or debit card $1000 or less, records show.

The newly filed charges Abston are not related to Fletcher's abduction, according to an affidavit obtained by CNN affiliate WHBQ. The new charges are connected to a Thursday theft report filed by a woman who reported that someone was using her CashApp card and Wisley Card at gas stations without her knowledge.”

I figure someone somewhere is trying to peg this on liberal crime policy but there are no liberals in Tennessee.

by Anonymousreply 66September 6, 2022 4:54 PM

There might be low funds for the police department, though. Fewer cops on patrol, less training, lower pay.

by Anonymousreply 67September 6, 2022 4:56 PM

It's more the court right? Why did he get out early? or at all?

by Anonymousreply 68September 6, 2022 4:59 PM

Probably eligible for parole. Also, he was under 18 when he did the prior kidnapping. Sounds like he was prosecuted as an adult, but him being under 18 was probably a mitigating sentencing factor.

by Anonymousreply 81September 6, 2022 8:29 PM

How sad. I hate the death penalty but I'm certain rare cases, it's almost needed. What's the point of keeping this guy alive for another 40 yrs or more. He was just released and jumped to committing the worst crime you can. Just rid the world of this garbage.

by Anonymousreply 86September 6, 2022 8:43 PM

Cleotha?

by Anonymousreply 87September 6, 2022 8:46 PM

It bugs me that the public defender had barely been assigned and she was asking for a gag order on all future proceedings. Apparently she will be filing an official motion to do so. I think that is wrong for these high profile cases to be doing that. They tried with the murdaugh case as well. You can always find jurors who will consider all evidence and not be influence by media. It’s become a knee jerk reaction by these defence lawyers now to try and prevent the trial from being public.

by Anonymousreply 88September 6, 2022 8:47 PM

R86 exactly. Or why couldn’t he have just driven to whatever part of Memphis has hookers on a corner and used his hundred bucks there. Instead of going violent on someone.

by Anonymousreply 89September 6, 2022 8:49 PM

I dunno. Seeing footage of the victim dragged into the car of the last individual who saw her alive is damning evidence.

Guilty. AF.

by Anonymousreply 90September 6, 2022 8:51 PM

R89, well, he's obviously very stupid and brainless.

by Anonymousreply 91September 6, 2022 8:55 PM

To all who thought the husband was involved, don't you feel foolish now?

Well, do you?

by Anonymousreply 92September 6, 2022 8:57 PM

Some are still suggesting he might have been involved or paid off her killer, R92.

by Anonymousreply 93September 6, 2022 8:59 PM

Yeah - a lot of people rely so much on the stats about these killings but in a city with high crime and abduction rates like Memphis, it should never have been such a strong assumption.

by Anonymousreply 94September 6, 2022 9:00 PM

Why was he released early (I’ve heard by 2-4 years) and doesn’t that mean he should have had a parole officer?

by Anonymousreply 95September 6, 2022 9:03 PM

R92? No. The spouse is usually responsible.

Are you fapping because "a black" did this?

by Anonymousreply 96September 6, 2022 9:07 PM

The suspect offered to pay for sex, this is inappropriate and creepy but he didn't assault the women he approached. He has no prior history of murder.

That is what confuses.

But the footage of the victim being abducted is a slam dunk. He did this. Why is irrelevant.

by Anonymousreply 97September 6, 2022 9:12 PM

I’m sure it’s well swept under the rug now but the campus x country women’s team complained about a line guy in a dark suv harassing the runners on their early morning practices. He definitely seemed to shift his ambitions to doing something by force.

This is to random of an attack and I think something else will come out to connect this guy to this family in someway.

by Anonymousreply 103September 6, 2022 9:29 PM

Agree r102

by Anonymousreply 104September 6, 2022 9:39 PM

R103 what do you mean random? Many crimes are opportunistic and I can totally see this fucker spotting a woman running alone and deciding he's going to rape/kill her.

by Anonymousreply 105September 6, 2022 9:43 PM

I believe in coincidences, but his last kidnapping victim worked with her family’s attorney? That’s QUITE a coincidence.

by Anonymousreply 106September 6, 2022 9:49 PM

The yard ape was wearing shower shoes. How could it have been planned?

by Anonymousreply 107September 6, 2022 9:49 PM

He had been in jail so long he didn’t understand the basics about public security cameras and his vehicle / phone gps tracking him. That and a likely low IQ.

by Anonymousreply 108September 6, 2022 9:55 PM

I doubt they’d go this far in a statement if there was still a cloud of suspicion over the husband.

Kemper Durand died of pneumonia ten years ago. Why go after a niece of Mike Keeney—one of thirty-five attorneys at Lewis Thomason's Memphis office—when he had absolutely nothing to do with the Durand case?

by Anonymousreply 110September 6, 2022 10:16 PM

And if you had a grudge, wouldn't you plan what to do? This guy clearly acted on the spur of the moment. I don't think he intended to kill Eliza. But she didn't capitulate at all, like Durand did (until he yelled for help).

by Anonymousreply 111September 6, 2022 10:21 PM

No one’s going to kidnap the niece of their dead victim’s coworker for revenge. Sounds completely ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 112September 6, 2022 10:24 PM

R103 he did not get paid after raping and offing the wife.

I'm very much a paranoid person who sees conspiracies everywhere but why this guy raped and murdered is irrelevant.

He is guilty and will be lucky to escape the electric chair

by Anonymousreply 113September 6, 2022 10:30 PM

Tennessee has the electric chair as a means of execution - it was last used in 2009. Interestingly enough, it was built out of wood from the state's former gallows used in hangings. Death row inmates can choose the electric chair over lethal injection, but there is still a lot of controversy about using it.

I wonder why a method could not be used similar to defibrillating a patient in the hospital. The inmate could be sedated, strapped to a table, and then the shock could be delivered via paddles, only with much greater strength than that used in defibrillation. Larger and correctly placed paddles should get the job done in one or two strikes.

by Anonymousreply 120September 7, 2022 1:41 AM

I’ve been having nightmares about Eliza’s murder. I was awakened and startled by seeing that last photo of her on her 4am jog. I see that photo and I wake up horrified. I can’t seem to figure out how and why her body was found on the back steps of that broken down house? I first heard her body was found in a “wooded area’.

Now, reports are saying she was found on or near the doorsteps? How would she have ended up there? Was she alive for a brief moment and was trying to get help? I realize the police shouldn’t give away too much details. But there’s so many discrepancies based on news reports. I just hope that asshole gets the death penalty and in a way, even liberal states should allow in some instances of heinous crimes that the perp should be sentenced and put down in a speedy manner.

* Reference the tool box killers*

by Anonymousreply 121September 8, 2022 1:22 PM

R121 I totally hear you on this. I think of times when I’ve come back from an evening walk a little too late and it becomes dark quickly or am out walking usually busy parkland/trail areas near me and realize there has been a lull in foot traffic and I am very alone. That’s different from jogging at 4am, but those moments of danger can sneak up on any of us at any time without meaning to have them happen. And despite all the heiress stuff the media loves to mention, she was so .. ordinary. Like anyone.

Details are a little hard to piece together. I thought maybe she was killed in those first few minutes they mention after she was and tied but I shudder to think it wasn’t until later. The trial will be public likely - even though the public defender on day one tried to gag order the whole thing. I feel the need to know how this all happened.

He then sped up and blocked access to the street. Either I veer left and go into canal or right and ride through high grass and trees. Luckily I got away. Was never so scared in my life. He didn't say anything, but will never forget to look on his face and knew he was up to no good. This happened on sunny afternoon. Told my bf (ex) at the time and said he probably wanted to get to know me and I was overreacting. Screw him. I bought mace. It's a scary world and it pisses me the complaints were not taken seriously. Poor woman.

Mace is good but there are also other last ditch defense items a woman might consider

Mind you this happened in the mid 90's. Luckily more options for self defense nowadays.

R126 What a terrible experience. I’m glad you escaped. A man just attempted to abduct a woman in broad daylight in Chicago‘s West Loop. The increased video/security cams are making it easier for police to catch these creeps, but unfortunately doesn’t do much to deter the crime in the first place.

R121/r122 stop being such a coward. Learn how to protect and defend yourself and live your life. Hopefully you don’t have any loved ones that need you to protect them. They would be doomed.

R60

I'd stare right back, and maybe draw my finger across my throat and point at him.

Gunshot wound to the head, blunt force trauma AND fentanyl in her system? Overkill…

Think he tried to drug her and she kept fighting?

by Anonymousreply 133September 29, 2022 10:40 PM

R133 That’s what everyone is thinking, he drugged her to subdue her. I can’t imagine how much she suffered at the end.

Fry his ass!

R60 I would stare right back and fan a bunch of bills, point to the prison guard, and laugh, knowing that motherfucker is about to get some Chris Scarver justice.
