But who’s to say he can’t pick up leading (straight passing) roles - if that’s actually what he wants - he's an actor, after all, and I’d hope pretty versatile. Or maybe theatre will be his thing.

Like R109 said, we don't know what he has coming up. He's also gone from zero fame to quite intense fame basically overnight, so he may not have the desire to jump straight into another big/wide-reaching project. Maybe the lower-key theatre gig was just what he wanted at this point, while he adjusts to the Heartstopper fame and his new life.

I think he's a good actor - perhaps not as strong as Kit (yet) but still good - but being brutally honest, Kit is just far more obviously 'TV/film attractive'. I'm not saying Joe is unattractive but he won't fit neatly into the romcom-type lead role easily, sadly, and this may restrict his options. He's very smart and seemingly political though, so I sort of hope he goes for the more high-brow, thoughtful roles.

Let's be honest, a big part of her success is that she fills a very specific 'current' demographic - trans woman of colour. If it were based on her acting skills alone, there's no way she'd be this successful already.

Not to belabour the point too much but agree overall with the commenters here saying joe has a tougher time at their current age due solely to “look” and yes, being less straight passing. I actually thought he pulled it off in the play which is a good sign, but as others have said he’s less traditional teen heartthrob, and too young for a lot of the “serious” roles and that’s tough. Oddly I can see him having a good TV career, especially as British shows like people who don’t often fit that traditional look, but fitting in another decent sized role in a tv show is tough with HS filming at least another two seasons, so we may see a lot more of his success after that.

I understand others saying Bash and Kit’s additional experience isn’t the reason they’re getting cast, their HS success is - but I think experience on a film set, not having to be taught anything from scratch, in addition to passing as straight and having the “right” look and height helps them a lot. Good for Yaz re Doctor Who and this new thing but Joe can’t turn into a black trans woman so not much role overlap, and I’m still unsure how big her role in Doctor Who will be so until we see that I’m not counting it as a huge thing (obviously good on the resume but she’s not leading a wide release film or whatever). If it is just his agency shitting the bed hopefully he changes over, but I’m still intrigued by his LA meeting and have my fingers crossed for him something good comes of it.

Just a lot of the teen roles are romantic ones (there’s a reason both kit and Bash immediately booked rom coms). As he enters his 20s and starts looking older there’ll be more roles where being the “romantic leading man” isn’t the selling point but for a lot of teen roles it’s either play that or be the dorky best friend which maybe wouldn’t be the best career move.

I think he can probably pass as straight, the play he just did is an example, but he's also not really what you'd call a heartthrob. He's cute and looks like a kid. A really skinny kid. Bash and Kit look like young adult men. He's not the type of actor that's going to get hired for the fangirls to wish they could date. That's not the only roles out there, but those teen romcoms are pretty popular for young actors. Joe might have to wait a little longer for something good to pop up.

The viewer is supposed to relate to and empathize with Charlie, and fall in love with Nick. Young viewers (who will vote multiple times) miss that Joe’s acting is what drew them into the story and focus only on the crush they now have on Nick/Kit. Also the vast majority of HS fans are teen girls, many of whom identify as bi, so they also relate to Nick’s storyline.

I don’t think that Joe’s acting didn’t draw people in, he was excellent especially for a first role, but Kit is a stronger actor and the strongest among the 6 teens in the ensemble.

Joe's acting didn't fuck up the groove. He's not the "Poor Michelle" of Heartstopper. But he didn't dominate or excel. He's likeable and he has a fraility that works for the part. Hopefully, he shows more dimension in the future.

I’m not saying this in a Joe’s a baby that must be coddled way, but I get the feeling he doesn’t want to be a huge star. HS is way bigger than anyone expected, and since it came out he’s pulled way back from social media. I think he’s a talented actor who enjoys acting, but doesn’t necessarily enjoy interacting with crazy fan girls. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does more stage acting between filming seasons of HS, not because he can’t get film work, but because he wants to act in interesting roles for a smaller audience.

Think it’s also almost definitely Joe given they are confirming him and Bash back to back. They’re not so obsessive one couldn’t do a fan convention without the other but I can see the other one being there as additional incentive to sign on.

It's gotta be Joe, surely. I assume this means the trio will do a panel together? That could be fun - I hope someone films it because then we'd have actual Joe/Bash interactions that last longer than 2 seconds. Although how that would work when they're still keeping their relationship a secret will be interesting...
