Naomi couldn't handle another breadstick or bagel on clay from Sara after the Madrid Misery and Fed Cup Fiasco. She is such a coddled child. Her sister exposed her in that reddit post for being unable to take any criticism.

[quote]If no points were offered it could effectively reduce the SW19 fortnight to the status of highly-paid exhibition.
Come on, it wouldn't. Technically, sure, but it's WIMBLEDON.
Ranking points would protect the Russians/Belarusians somewhat but the real move would be if the tennis players united to boycott Wimbledon.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 11, 2022 12:52 PM
|
I don't really have the answer about Wimbledon, but I do hope the rankings aren't affected too much. It's taken FOREVER to get back to some sense of normalcy after 3 years of COVID-era points not dropping. Andreescu is still using a PR to enter tournaments that she has because of her 2019 US Open win. It's been 3 years and she's still using those points to enter.
And Federer was still in the top 10 until just recently, despite barely playing over the past 3 years.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 11, 2022 1:51 PM

R34 If ranking points were stripped away from Wimbledon and the UK grass court tournaments there would be many withrawals. Players already see the grass mini season as a nuisance and nothing more between clay and hard courts events. Sure there will still be a lot of money, but it would just be like an exhibition. Wimbledon lost a lot of credibility and respect with that stupid decision as no one follows it.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 11, 2022 5:44 PM

Yes, Russia has been banned by a number of different sports, so it's not that unusual to see the ban in tennis. I don't know why so many people are shocked and surprised by Wimbledon's decision.
I would be surprised to see many players skipping Wimbledon even if they remove the rankings points. Aside from prize money, the prestige is a huge motivating factor. The players love to play the Olympics which is much less important than Wimbledon for tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 11, 2022 5:46 PM
|
R43 It would be like the Olympics. Players were motivated to take part in them when federations raised the prize money in case of medals and ranking points were added. When these lacked there wasn't much motivation going on, so they used to show up - of course - but not fight till the last ball in case a match became difficult, that's why we often saw random finalists like Massu, Fish, Rosset, Bencic or the Puertorican girl. Removing ranking points from Wimbledon may have this effect, especially on men who have to go through the five-setters.

The Fog is giving me everything with his shotmaking tonight.
Poots hit Muguruza with a volley at the net and Garbine told her off and waved her finger at her (lol). I thought she would use that as motivation to win the match but she choked from a winning position instead. A lot of her era-mates are in decline this year too (Kvitova, Kerber, Pliskova, Svitolina, etc.). A changing of the guard is happening.

Medvedev returns from his hernia surgery and will open against Gasquet or Millman
unseeded Thiem draws a TBD qualifier
Ruud really should withdraw but he's entered and will open against Ruusuvuori or Paire

Lyon is decent
Norrie is top seed, PCB is #2, Monfils is #3, De Minaur #4, Khachanov is #5, Karatsev is #6, Baez is #7

I like the Incredible Hulk Girl as a sympathetic pick. I like that she got some control over her yips. Even if it's just for the week. It's good progress. And I like her game. She could use some variety but she plays a lot like a Jennifer Capriati. Players who can get dangerous anywhere if they catch fire. Jennifer had more variety and could play on any surface but the game is the same. The serve can break down at any moment.

R158 Ruud is overplaying and he will tank at Roland Garros
by Anonymous | reply 168 | May 14, 2022 10:33 AM

R168 He's going the Thiem route - playing too much with the concrete risk of overtraining. Not clever at all. He's at a point in his career where he needs to have the big results at Roland Garros/slams and stop farming points in little 250 tournaments. He also has a mental block for slams anyway so it's gonna be even tougher.
I really like Ruud but he needs to focus more on his unique style and try to copy Nadal less. He's been using his same tactics and shots since last summer.

Tsitsy through to the final over Zverev in three. Not a high quality match, though. I kept thinking about the Alcaraz matches with Nadal and especially Djokovic in Madrid. Such high quality in those matches. This was a dud compared to those.

R167 I find her a loveable goof too. And Swiatek herself has used the MTO questionably many times. Congrats to the Pole though. I'm happy to finally have *one* WTA girl playing well. It would be nice if we could get more than one, to give her a challenge.
The current state of the WTA is a shame. Womens tennis has such a rich history and when I think 'tennis', I would say most of the games' great champions and personalities have been women (Chrissie, Martina, Pam, the Williams sisters, Henin & Clijsters, all the Russians, Hingis, Pierce, Davenport, Seles, Graf, Sabatini, Mauresmo, Li Na, ... the big 3 ATP players were never quite as interesting to me.

I think Swiatek is the definite favorite for RG but Jabeur is probably #2. Jabeur reached the Charleston final, won Madrid and now of course has a chance for the Rome title.
Interesting how the men's final will be a rematch of last year's RG final. I am surprised to see Djokovic and Tsitsipas have not played each other since then. Even if Tsitsipas somehow wins the title, I think he'd still be #4 favorite for RG behind Alcaraz, Nadal (if he's healthy) and Djokovic who are pretty much co-favorites

If Nadal doesn't think he can win he won't play. All the GOATS have this in common, including Serena, When they play a match, they believe they can win it until the last point. None of them can "fake it". Roger has never retired during a match but he'll pull out at the last minute if thinks he can't win, especially against Novaxx.

Yeah, Tsitsipas is not playing as well as he was last year in my opinion. His record at the clay Masters 1000s is better than last year but he's not being competitive with the best players in the world, which right now are Djokovic, Nadal, and the best of all so far Alcaraz. I wrote yesterday that watching the quality of the Alcaraz matches against Nadal and Djokovic in Madrid versus Zverev-Tsitsipas in Madrid and here in Rome showed a marked difference. Alcaraz, Nadal and Djokovic are playing at a level or two higher than Tsitsipas and Zverev.
Also, Tsitsipas continues to have the same problem of finding a way to lose. He's up 5-2 in the second but still manages to lose the set. That is a troubling aspect of his game that he'd better fix. He supposedly is working with a sports psychologist. Hopefully he gets something out of it because right now Tsitsipas's problem is between the ears.

On the men's side, the detestable Sandgren is unseeded and drew the top qualie seed Monteiro. Verdasco vs. Dzumhur is a match that several years ago would have been a main draw first or second round. Sock, Querrey and Seppi are additional previously formidable entrants.

R262, Djokovic hasn't played 3 out of 5 in over 8 months, and he's closer now to 40 than 30. Alcaraz also didn't weather 5 sets well at the USO or the AO. The endurance factor doesn't make either one of them such a sure thing at RG.

Alcaraz is definitely the shiny new object. It seems inevitable that he’ll win at least one Slam if not several. I will eat my hat if he grabs 20 of them like our current GOATs. I’m happy to watch him lay waste to the jelly-kneed “Next Gen”, but I’m skeptical that he’s the next Fed or Nadal.
Although maybe all it takes to be the next Fed or Nadal is for one of them to retire. Next Gen will roll over or headcase their way out of any major success as soon as a fit, talented challenger approaches.

Djokovic was playing like ass this clay court season but early on he was on the receiving end of so many chokes (still can't believe the Djere match) and it really boosted his form and confidence. Obviously gave him more matches, too. Sissypants flubbed the final so badly last year from 2 sets and a break up, his 5-2 choke yesterday probably just makes it more of a mental battle for him going into Paris. I'm also not counting Nadal out, although his form is HORRIBLE (and I like him). Alcaraz has limited experience in Bo5 but could ride the wave of the crowd to the title.
On the WTA side, the obvious pick is Iga, having won like 5 tournaments in a row. So the winner will probably be [qualifier] Astra Sharma or something.

R271 I'm a Nadal fan and I agree. Honestly, I was shocked he won AO this year. It was pure grit and confidence. He never gave up. When he lost that close AO final a few years ago I basically gave up. I never thought he would get the chance to win AO again, because he was getting older and his form was getting worse. How wrong I was. I'm honestly so proud of him. He proved me wrong and won against all odds. He got his double grand slam (aka he won all 4 slams TWICE). Everything now is just a bonus, I get the feeling Rafa himself sees it this way too. I think his last goal to accomplish was that AO title, so he has a double GS. I can just tell, he smiles and is happy, he just enjoys playing. I don't think he himself has any expectations anymore, not since AO. He's just happy to be playing, whether he wins or not.

Yes, Novaxx can only win because everyone else sucks and Rafa wins with grit and determination. Novaxx plays 10 shitty matches, loses 2k points in AU, and yet he's still number one this week for a stand alone record of more than 7 years, 3 years longer than Nadal.

The Big 3 pissing contest about who has the better numbers is so lame to me. It's also created a bit of an 'only slams matter' attitude in the tennis fandom. They can't retire soon enough so we can move on to more interesting conversations.
Honestly, Djokovic and Rafa are BOTH playing like shit. They're both getting by on their reputations (and their natural tennis talent of course), but lower ranked players let them off the hook all the time. This element is even more obvious in Best of Five when the opponent has more time to think about it. I wouldn't even mind if the matches were good - The level of tennis itself from both is a far cry from the matches they were giving us even 2 years ago.

R271 No kidding I was thinking the same thing about WTA. The tour and the slams seem now two separate railways. The ones who win a lot on the tour (Pliskova, Sabalenka then, now Swiantek) then flop at the slams. I mean also Barty was No. 1 for like, what, 3 years? and only won two slams over a dozen chances. I will be surprised if Iga wins the whole thing. I also predict another random name like Ostapenko, Kreijcikova, Raducanu or something. You just have to randomly pick a name from the list. I say... Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Stefan Djokovic, age 8, won his first tournament on Sunday. Prediction for 2032 AO final, C. Alvarez v. S. Djokovic.
The drop in quality could be because of the pandemic, quarantines, bad food, all that testing, it had to have a negative impact on everyone.
r275, I agree, numbers are lame. All the players should be ranked alphabetically and you do the draw at the end of the tournament to determine the winner, imagine the excitement.

Nadal won the AO in part because the younger players are, as R266 observes, jelly-kneed. Medvedev going up two sets to none then blowing it was just inexcusable. It reminded me of Tsitsipas losing it at the French last year. It's all about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory for the younger lot. Nadal at the AO put on a clinic for how to fight through matches and never give up.
Alcaraz on the other hand is the real deal. That kid is not afraid. I've been watching professional tennis a long, long time and the reason Alcaraz is taking the sport by storm is because of his attitude. It's been a long time since we've seen a player who isn't afraid of the Big 3 (well Big 2 at this point) and truly feels like he belongs and should win. None of us knows what will happen with Alcaraz's career, but right now he's playing better than anyone on the tour AND he still has room to improve. Courier said on one of the recent tennis broadcasts that he thinks Alcaraz will grab at least one Slam within the next four ( this year's RG, Wimbledon and US Open and next year's AO) to become the first male teenager to win a Slam since Nadal. I for one agree with Courier's prediction.
Nadal's AO run in January reminded me a bit of Stefan Edberg's US Open run in 1992. They both should have been beaten along the way but their opponents tightened up. Indeed, Pete Sampras, who lost to Edberg in that final, cited that match as turning his career around. He never wanted to get to a Slam final and play subpar again. It's hard to see Medvedev or Tsitsipas turning it around and having a career like Sampras did, or even a career half as good.

I don't think Swiatek is winning the French. I know she's won it before, but I think the pressure (internal and external) of being such an overwhelming favorite will get to her. She'll probably bounce back and win the US Open, though.
I think Badosa could steal it. She didn't play great in Madrid or Rome so no one's talking about her, allowing her to fly under the radar. She also doesn't choke semis like Sakkari or finals like Jabeur. And I'd pick her to beat pretty much anyone in the draw save Swiatek and a redlining Anisimova or Sabalenka. I also think Sabs could win the whole thing, but she's just as likely to lose first round.

Sampras already had 10 Slams by the time he was Medvedev's current age, and 6 Slams when he was Tsitsipas' current age. So yes, R281, much too late for them.

Sloane and Thiem are just in horrific form these days
This is the first time heading into RG that neither has a win in the leadup clay events. Both were RG finalists not too long ago and of course both won a USO.

Thiem was out almost a year so his struggles are understandable. Not everyone is Federer who can miss most of a season and then win a slam.
Sloane is a weird case. She won a WTA title in February but has struggled to win matches since.

What has happened to Kontaveit? She won an early tournament this year but has been pretty much crap for the last few months. I know clay is not her surface but it feels bigger than that, maybe psychological or new problems with her motivation.

R273, I agree. I also think Rafa knows he'll have more Slams than Fed. And that has to sit well with him. I think Rafa (and the rest of us) has accepted the fact that Novak will end up being the GOAT with the most slams, most weeks at number one, etc.
But to most of us fans? It's either Fed or Rafa as the "people's GOAT" and Rafa having more Slams pushed him slightly in front of Fed.

R288 Kontaveit won St. Petersburg then got to the final in Doha, where she was annihilated by Swiatek. She might still be shaking off that loss, or all the matches she won last fall are catching up to her. Either way, she's reached just one QF in her last four tournaments.

Badosa is inconsistent. The experts keep tagging her for big wins… then she craps out. She could win RG… or be out by the third round.
Swiatek has been rock solid and dominant. You could be right that she will crack but I wouldn’t bet against her, particularly against a weak field on clay.

Almost everyone is being annihilated by Swiatek right now. That shouldn’t be enough to destroy Kontaveit’s confidence. But she lost in the first round of Miami to 44th ranked Ann Li including a 0-6 first set.
Something’s up.
Hopefully Dmitry T can get her back in gear.

Anyone betting against Swiatek at RG is nuts. Look what she did to Bianca A in their first set a few days ago. When the pressure is on, she steps it up like no one else.
I don’t like her at all, but she has all the confidence and momentum in the world right now. It might have been luckier if she lost a match leading up to RG so she wouldn’t feel the pressure. Either way she’s going to win.

If I only met Amélie once, I saw her then girlfriend, a.k.a. the love of her life, Sylvie Bourdon, a few times as we both used to eat at Le Loup Blanc, rue de Tiquetonne in Paris. BREAK POINT Boris Becker moved to cushiest part of prison after moaning his cell was too small
The tennis icon reportedly hit his emergency button several times as he wanted the door left open — but was told: “This is not room service.”
He has now been moved from Block E at Wandsworth, South West London, to Trinity Wing, which is said to be more “hands-off”.
Former inmate Chris Atkins said: “Trinity has more relaxed supervision.
“Prisoners have more opportunities to leave their cells, for example, to work, educate yourself, do sports and socialise.”
He also said there would be more job opportunities for Becker, including in the library or education department.

The scissors' cut. That's what viewers across the world got to see when Amelie won her match against Lindsay Davenport, qualified for the semi final of the Australian Open in January 1999 and ran to kiss her b̶o̶y̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶, um, her girlfriend seated in her box and came out to the world by so doing. I was not exactly surprised though. I loved watching Momo play, especially in Rome. She just could never handle the pressure of Roland Garros. French womens tennis was in such a good place back then, between her, Mary Pierce, Julie Halard-Decugis, Nathalie Tauziat, Sandrine Testud, Nathalie Dechy, Camille Pin, young Tatiana Golovin. It's currently a bit of a wasteland.
Looking at that photo from 1999, I can't help but think how cowardly all these closeted male players have been over the years. We are one of the last sports to not have an openly gay current male player. I know lesbianism is more accepted (and there are a lot in tennis even before Amelie), but still.

R320 I had a feeling sexy Mmoh got the US WC because he's playing in Lyon this week. He lost in second round of qualifying but just like in Houston, ended up getting in the main draw as a LL in the place of a withdrawn seed who had a bye. Unfortunately today he served for the match at 5-4 had 30-0, then after disagreeing with the umpire's call, threw in a double fault and netted drop shot attempt to get broken for 5-5. Then the match was suspended due to the darkness. As the cameras left the court he was yelling at the umpire about the call. Clearly he's still rattled by it so maybe sleeping on it overnight won't hurt when they resume tomorrow. He was on edge the whole match because the French crowd was so partisan in favor of his French opponent. We'll see how he handles the end of the third set tomorrow

Nadal is playing at Roland Garros. I think the key for Nadal will be his draw. If he gets opponents who can make him play longer matches, his foot might not hold up. With Nadal likely seeded 5th and Alcaraz 6th, the earliest he may face Alcaraz is a semi. Nadal may run into Djokovic in the quarters, though. He'd not be happy with that I'm sure. I think he'd be happy with a Medvedev, Zverev or Tsitsipas quarter since those guys have a tendency to implode. Of course that's assuming Nadal makes it to the quarters. His foot might give out before then. That will be something everyone will be watching during the tournament.

AAAAAnnnnnd Mmoh quickly loses today. I predicted it.
What I'm not clear about, and maybe somebody knows is, as an LL, he was placed in the draw where a seed was, giving him a first round bye. He lost his R16 match just now. Is he going to get only 6 ATP points (earned in qualifying) or will he get the 20 R16 points ? Same with prize money. Does he automatically get R28 prize money of about $6K, or R16 money of about $9K? I started to look this up on ATP site, and my interpretation is R1 prize money, but not sure about points.

R341 Not sure if it's different for ATP, but for WTA I don't believe they get points unless they actually get a walkover into another round. For LL they start from scratch in their seeded position (as well as the qualies points).
Mmoh really should have won the match. He served for it, but choked. The Frenchman who won (in 3h36m) over him was elated and very sweet in the interview to have done this in front of a home crowd. Mmoh's handshake was a bit salty.

The problem for Tsitsipas is that he has a very dismal h2h was Nole on clay, and he lost all three matches he played against Alcaraz.
He is clearly the favourite of that part of the draw but he will need the other finalist to be tired to get a real chance (unless he plays really well in the final)

R356 still he has to be very happy that all the biggest contenders are in the opposite side from him

Osaka stinks on clay so no one is expecting her to go far.

R356 every Slam winner has to face SOMEONE good eventually!
But Tsi has to face only one of the following: Rafa, Novak, Carlos, Zverev, Thiem.
It's preposterous. He gets Med in the SF. Maybe. Which is a joke.

R353 Must be either Ben or Courtney as none of those first-round women's matches are remotely compelling.

Watching this rebroadcast of Ruud v. Kokk... Thanasi may be physically attractive but his personality sucks. Glad Ruud won.

looking at the men's bottom half it's very interesting to see who'll make the most of being in the more open side of the draw
I think PCB or Kecmanovic will likely emerge from the Medvedev section to the QF
Rublev and Sinner are the 2 overwhelming favorites for the 7th QF spot though if Paul or Garin find form 1 of them could be a factor
As long as Tsitsipas gets by Musetti in the 1st round he shouldn't have any trouble until the rd16 if Rune is waiting for him. Shapovalov's worst surface by far is clay given his ball bashing ways so he shouldn't go far
Ruud is the overwhelming favorite for the 5th QF spot but he's shown some vulnerability this clay season. Hurkacz is not particularly adept on the surface so it wouldn't be a shock if he lost early. Tiafoe and Sonego are in there as well

With the form Garbine is in, you know that upset specialist Kaia Kanepi is smelling blood. Could be a flogging.

I never heard of Manuel Guinard but he must be beside himself with joy to play in front of his public. In your pic, R343 he really looks like a young Sean Penn. Not in all pictures though, it really depends on the angle.

That’s insane. I mean, Noah was being hilarious yet it’s hard to see it as a professional match.

ATP removes ranking points from Wimbledon over their banning of Russians and Belarussians. Wimbledon becomes basically an exhibition.

[quote]Wimbledon becomes basically an exhibition.
Really? Do you think that top players will fight less hard to win Wimbledon?
by Anonymous | reply 376 | May 20, 2022 6:02 PM

Don't players get paid a fixed fee for playing an exhibition win or lose too? Wimbledon isn't like that even with ranking points stripped. A lot of lower ranked players are unhappy with this but top players are happy with it.

I get that the players associations felt like they had to fight the ban, because they’re supposed to represent all the players and, yes, some players were discriminated against. I also get that many players are speaking up for their banned comrades… they are friends, so how can they not?
But that doesn’t negate the bigger picture. Yes, they are casualties of something terribly unfair. But not like the casualties in Ukraine.
Hope the US Open bans them, too, though I suspect they won’t.

R378 I've seen more than one lower ranked player post that they're unhappy that there wasn't a vote amongst all players. It seems like the top ranked players got what they wanted just because they have more power.

By removing the rankings points, Djokovic loses 2000 points and Medvedev becomes No.1 again. Well done, Wimbledon. Really well thought through.

R380, yes, by all means, “support Ukraine” by elevating Small Cat to No. 1. Fabricated rankings, that’s going to win over new fans . . .

I think they should take away the points of coaching violators, domestic abusers, closet case liars, homophobes, unstable maniacs, tall-weird-sevebots, Putin loving Nazi's and the generally hideous. That makes.
1. Carlos
2. Ruud
3.FAA
4. Norrie
5. Berretini
