Such 'great chemistry' that she dumped him after a few matches. Sure.

There's more to this. It could either be that she's just spouting a lot of bullshit so as not to upset anyone or it's really her dad, Ian, who is running the show and decided this.

Piatti has an impressive CV that includes work with the likes of Novak Djokovic and former world number three Ivan Ljubicic. It was to his camp, where he has a large staff, that she went at the start of this month after a disappointing exit at the Miami Open that looks to have sealed Beltz's fate.

by Anonymousreply 117May 1, 2022 3:17 PM

Becker has been given his own cell, but he is likely to be moved to a shared one this week, a prison source said. It will be 6ft by 12ft with a concrete floor and a toilet with no seat or privacy curtain.

The mattresses on the bunks are made from blue plastic so bodily fluids can be cleaned up easily.

Mr Atkins said inmates 'mostly appear to be either severely mentally ill, off their heads on drugs, or both'.

He added: 'What do they do all day? Smoke spice and watch Cash In The Attic on TV.' For most, the day begins at 7.45am. Those who are employed will work, often as kitchen workers and cleaners. For the rest, most of the day is spent 'banged up' in their cells.

by Anonymousreply 118May 1, 2022 3:18 PM

Too bad Boris is more of a talker "The tennis star may get extra perks if he becomes a listener – those trained by the Samaritans to support other inmates to reduce self-harm and suicide rates. Listeners are eligible for larger cells.

However, when Mr Atkins was a listener, an inmate told him to sing a song, 'or I'll slit your throat'."

Boris is expected to serve only a year of his two-and-a-half year jail term for hiding millions after his 2017 bankruptcy.

He is then likely to be freed with a tag.

Tennis champ Novak Djokovic, 34, who was coached by Boris, said he was “super sad for him”.

by Anonymousreply 143May 3, 2022 12:30 AM

In UK they release even hardcore criminals and terorist once they serve half of their jail time. So it is only fair that if Boris get released after serving one year.

R196 was spot on. Nadal is once again taking down a young gun in Goffin. Goffin has had his own injury struggles. I want to see Alcaraz-Nadal next, so I hope Carlos beats Norrie. I still think at this point Nadal beats Alcaraz, but it will hopefully show Alcaraz what he needs to work on AND motivate him to do the work to beat Nadal in the future.

That was an amazing tie-break. Goffin definitely did not 'lose' that. Rafa had to dig deep to get that over the line.

by Anonymousreply 222May 5, 2022 5:42 PM

I actually like Rafa more, but Elf Goffin was the better player today and he really should have closed him out on that match point. In this form, I can't see Nadal getting through Alcaraz, maybe not even a peaking Tsitsipas or Zverev in best of 3 (I still don't know about Djokovic).

Kim Clijsters has had to close her Academy in Belgium (where Elise Mertens and others train) due to financial issues. It seems like those rumours, that her failed comeback was due to money problems, may have some credence. She wouldn't be the first tennis player with bad finances.

R227 I can't understand how a multi-millionaire Grand Slam winner has financial problems. She most likely spent everything in that academy. What a cloud-headed.

Her comeback was the most embarassing thing ever in the history of tennis. You would expect that a player of that level would have top fitness condition for her age to attempt a comback at 36... nope. She showed up fat like a cow. Then covid, if anything, helped her by giving her more time for fitness, but NOPE AGAIN. She appeared in Cincinnati even FATTER, morbidly obese. And then "Oops, I failed because covid". Bitch, please.

Alcaraz won the first set 6-2, but then he rolled his ankle with a bad fall at the beginning of the second while on serve. After getting his ankle taped, he came back and he's clearly rattled. Carlos was down 3-1 with Rafa serving at 40-15 when someone in the stands fell ill. Match currently suspended until the EMTs take the person out of the stadium, so even more delay. Rafa must have a four-leaf clover.

These types matches would do harm to David Goffin and Carlos Alcaraz than benefitting them.

Noone actually "learn" from these matches.

I saw lot of people were telling that Goffin is back .

No he is NOT back. Yesterday soul crushing defeat, where he missed an easy Forehand at one of the match points would haunt him whenever he would play a big close match.

Just ask Berdych. Gasquet or Anderson. Kyle Edmund ,PCB or Karen Hemsworth.

They type of defeat creat a big and lasting mental block in the loser minds.

I really hope I am wrong. Specially in carse of Carlos A since French Open is very near.

Finally a player who isn't a pussy and takes down Nadal, and on clay no less, although not Rafa's favorite clay surface. This should boost Alcaraz's confidence even more. I hope he takes down Djokovic tomorrow and that there's no problem with his ankle.

by Anonymousreply 270May 6, 2022 5:23 PM

Alcaraz is definitely the heir apparent. I absolutely love watching him play.

But Rafa never plays well at Madrid. I'm actually glad he lost, but got in some tough matches. He seems injury free and that's what really matters at this point.

Rome is really the best tuneup for Roland Garros. Very similar conditions. And the draw just came out. It's Rafa's first decent draw since birth it seems.

by Anonymousreply 271May 6, 2022 5:46 PM

I remember back then in the 80s, people were saying that Chrissie wasn't actually as fast as a lot of the other WTA players, but what she lacked in speed, she could make up with a terrific sense of anticipation. And so after having watched the Nadal-Alcaraz match, I found Nadal to either be slow or really lack his usual sense of anticipation but he found himself wrong-footed time and time again.

Either way, I don't feel he's where he's supposed to be if he wants to be considered the favorite at the FO but Madrid is not your typical clay tournament, and he never was really comfortable there, with the ball flying away in the air at this altitude (2,200').

by Anonymousreply 272May 6, 2022 6:09 PM

Why does Nadal still plays Madrid is beyond me. Having said that, I agree with R272, today Nadal was very slow to react, borderline worrisome. That first set was very telling. Now, Alcaraz has some amazing shots and tomorrow's match with Djokovic will be interesting to watch.

by Anonymousreply 273May 6, 2022 6:18 PM

R272, find some youtube clay matches (or other surfaces) with Chris Evert. She was very fast. A lot of critics might have compared her speed unfavorably to Navratilova, Mandlikova, Court, King, Goolagaong, maybe Casals, etc., but she could move swiftly.

by Anonymousreply 274May 6, 2022 7:28 PM

R273, you do know that Rafa just started practicing and training again a couple weeks ago…

by Anonymousreply 275May 6, 2022 7:32 PM

Nadal needs matches, it's as simple as that. The be in top form at Roland Garros he needs to play.

Probably this defeat is the best for him in the long run

by Anonymousreply 276May 6, 2022 7:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 295May 7, 2022 3:27 PM

Carlos! He ties is one set apiece. He lost that first set because he couldn't find his first serve. I hope this is his comeback. Fingers crossed!

by Anonymousreply 296May 7, 2022 4:35 PM

First two sets of this Djokovic-Alcaraz match have been mindfucking gold. Moonballs, drop shots, playing to the crowd by both guys (one of them looks delusional doing it).

But most importantly: Carlos appears to have invested in some skin care.

by Anonymousreply 297May 7, 2022 4:35 PM

The last game of the second set was glorious. Carlos looked very negative after losing the first set though, so I was worried he'd let it get to him.

by Anonymousreply 298May 7, 2022 4:47 PM

SIIIIIIIIIIII! Carlitos did it! Great match - I hate Djokovic but have to give him plaudits for hanging on in there right to the end.

by Anonymousreply 299May 7, 2022 6:03 PM

Madrid is fast for clay so I think this is a bad sign for Djokovic. At some point age inevitably catches up with you and makes you slower.

by Anonymousreply 300May 7, 2022 6:05 PM

Alcaraz takes it after 3:37 minutes of unbridled suspense. Oof! Not sure if it's really a bad sign for Djokovic as he hadn't played in what, 7 months before?

Something tells me the other final won't be as good as the first one. As for tomorrow, I hope Carlos takes it all the way and trashes Titsy in the process.

by Anonymousreply 301May 7, 2022 6:08 PM

God bless Djokovic's creepy little heart trying to look classy and supportive at the net after losing a classic to Alcaraz. He'll be breaking things later when he lets his actual self out.

by Anonymousreply 302May 7, 2022 6:09 PM

What a great match. Djokovic was playing better than Nadal and yet Carlos still took him down. This kid is incredible! It's so nice to have a new star. I hope he takes the French. I wonder if he wins the final if he'll skip Rome? I don't want him to be worn out for Roland Garros.

by Anonymousreply 303May 7, 2022 6:12 PM

7 months, R301? Djokovic lost in the semis of the ATP Finals, played Davis Cup in Madrid in December, flopped in Dubai in February and in Monte Carlo last month.

by Anonymousreply 304May 7, 2022 6:19 PM

Carlos should definitely skip Italian Open irrespective of tomorrow result if he really wants to do well in the French Open

by Anonymousreply 305May 7, 2022 6:19 PM

Okay R304 so Djokovic played what?, four matches in 6 months? Less than he would usually play in a single tournament.

by Anonymousreply 306May 7, 2022 6:22 PM

I think it's age catching up with him. I won't be shocked if he never wins a slam again. He was stupid to throw the AO over because of a vaccine. Which, incidentally, is also the reason why he hasn't been able to play much.

by Anonymousreply 307May 7, 2022 6:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 314May 7, 2022 7:30 PM

Damn I wish Alcaraz had been 3 years older. It's great to see someone finally beat Nadal and Djokovic back to back at a clay event but it's taken far too long. Even more annoying that Nadal lucked out at the AO this year. IT would have been so poetic if the Big 3 all ended their careers with 20 slams each

by Anonymousreply 336May 8, 2022 12:19 AM

There's nothing surprising any more about Zverev's lowest level of assholery and abuse. What's galling is that the ATP barely slapped him on the wrist and let him stick around for the clay season when they should have booted his scrawny ass out for a good six months. Also astounding that we have posters on here who still stan him.

by Anonymousreply 337May 8, 2022 1:06 AM

Was there a MTF trans lines person at the Djokovic/Alcaraz match?

by Anonymousreply 338May 8, 2022 1:27 AM

R307, what's worse for Novak, is that he doesn't have any huge weapon (like Rafa's forehand or Fed's serve) that can still win him a few matches as he ages.

His entire game is based on supremely consistent shot making off both wings. If he really has a lost a step? That won't happen as much. And he just doesn't have the big shots to counterbalance that loss.

That said, I don't think Novak is done by a long shot. He just won't be as dominant day in and day out.

by Anonymousreply 339May 8, 2022 1:38 AM

You know the rest of the field is hoping for Djokovic, Nadal and Alcaraz to be in the top half of RG just like this week in Madrid. If they are spread out in 3 of the 4 quarters then most likely they will be 3 of the 4 semifinalists

by Anonymousreply 340May 8, 2022 2:00 AM

I could tolerate a dirty, loud ,selfish powerful fuck from Zverev if he went away after

by Anonymousreply 341May 8, 2022 2:02 AM

Ons!!! Yalla habibiiiiii. She still has issues closing out big matches but the talent is there. I would love to see her win a slam this year.

Alcaraz just became the de facto favourite for RG (even if the courts are slower than here, the WAY he defeated Nadal/Djokovic can't be overlooked). But he has one more important job to do in the final. I want to see a lashing.

by Anonymousreply 342May 8, 2022 2:15 AM

I wonder what's going on with Murray. You don't pull out of Rome because you had one night of food poisoning in Madrid.

Djokovic looked great this tournament. He's doing what pros over the age of 30 do--and Federer has done so brilliantly--which is pace himself. He is rightfully pissed he lost today, but he must be feeling like he can contend for Slams again after this week.

by Anonymousreply 343May 8, 2022 3:31 AM

No, R306, Djokovic played 21 matches from November until May and would have played more had he not lost in the first rounds. Face it, he's older and slower and soon won't be a factor at all. He couldn't even win his own 250 tournament.

by Anonymousreply 344May 8, 2022 3:57 AM

You may not like Novak, but you don't win 20 Slams without having any weapons. His game isn't flashy, but he's rock solid in every aspect, has remarkable fitness, doesn't wilt under pressure, and rarely gets overpowered.

by Anonymousreply 345May 8, 2022 4:19 AM

Nobody's denying his weapons or glory days. It's just that the former are fewer now and the latter are behind him.

by Anonymousreply 346May 8, 2022 4:33 AM

After being criticized for recieving so many wild cards (and then losing early) Murray defended his wild cards by claiming he would happily play qualifying in Rome if he was not granted a wild card there because he just loves tennis. Well, Rome didn't give him a Wild Card and Murray won't play in qualification because of extended food poisioning.

I've never seen someone so explicitly on doping like Alcaraz. And nobody saying anything. That guy took 10 kg from November to January, coincidentially a standard steroid cycle of 3 months. Everybody talking about Russia when Spain has an equally tentacular state sponsored doping program. Has everybody forgotten about Operacion Puerto? It seems so. When blood sacks of dozens of tennis players, cyclists etc were found positive for all kids of steroids and then were made disappeared? When journalists leaked that Nadal was about those? When Ferrer, Errani, Safina were brought to court?

Russians and Spanish should be banned from tennis until those two Federations are totally drained from the filth by and international organization. So, no, I'm not team "Stacked Carlos" aka Cheating Carlos.

Oh, please, R349. His musculature is nothing unusual. Easy to pack it on at that age.

by Anonymousreply 352May 8, 2022 10:47 AM

You don't know how muscle development works. R352 Go look at him at the Next Gen in November 2021 and then how he showed up at the AO. Veiny, capped, hard delts, sudden increased level of energy and magically becoming a de facto Top 3 from being around 30 in a couple months. That is NOT a normal physical and tennis development.

by Anonymousreply 353May 8, 2022 11:03 AM

Well, his game is not normal either.

And that happened several times before, there are people who are precocious, it's as simple as that

by Anonymousreply 354May 8, 2022 11:36 AM

I think you guys defend him because he's hot and new. On Novaxx, PEDal, Serena, Medvedev and every Russian I've read all kinds of accusations.

In MonteCarlo he was 1/16 against Stef.

So I think that was the difference

He needs to be that good (as he was yesterday)at the net if he wants to have a realistic chance against Carlos

by Anonymousreply 358May 8, 2022 1:09 PM

R349 LOL I can’t lie, i’ve also had this thought about Alcaraz (though I like watching his play). I know he’s young, but he just looks like he’s done about 20 lines of cocaine during and after every point. Plus the typical acne, vascularity, teeth/hair side effects of steroids.

Maybe Andy Murray is selling him his Meldonium supplement that was posted about upthread? My meathead bodybuilder brother (who has used steroids before) said he was probably ‘on a cycle’ when he saw him at the Australian Open this year. Anyway, I hope he beats Zverev.

by Anonymousreply 361May 8, 2022 2:22 PM

Alcaraz vs. Zverev starting in about 10 minutes. I hope Carlos wins this one. It'd be a shame to take out two all-time greats back-to-back only to lose to Zverev.

I watched the Zverev-Tsitsipas match last night. All I kept thinking was how much lower the quality of that match was compared to Alcaraz's matches with Nadal and particularly with Djokovic, which was one of the best matches I've seen in a while. Tsitsipas was really off on his ground strokes and kept looping mid-paced balls into Zverev's strike zone. Tsitsi also could not make his slice work and it frequently caught the top of the tape. Zverev's first serve percentage was ridiculously high in the first set. Zverev won but neither player reached the levels we've seen Alcaraz, Nadal and Djokovic reach at this tournament.

by Anonymousreply 362May 8, 2022 4:24 PM

I think the consensus on DL is Alcaraz team for the final, so let's discuss who we prefer purely in terms of looks (not personality or game). In terms of looks are you:

Carlos wins! Zverev was completely outclassed. As I suspected from the Zverev-Tsitsipas level of play, Alcaraz was a cut above. Zverev made a lot of errors, but when he was going toe-to-toe with Alcaraz in a point, Alcaraz usually won it because of his superior skills. Very impressive from Alcaraz!

by Anonymousreply 374May 8, 2022 5:46 PM

definitely doping.

by Anonymousreply 375May 8, 2022 5:47 PM

LOVE that Alcaraz destroyed Zverev but wish it had been a double bagel. Well, they're in the same section of Rome this week so there's hope

by Anonymousreply 376May 8, 2022 6:11 PM

We can speculate ad nauseam about who's doping and all of the ostensible telltale signs. Keep in mind though that two of the most infamous documented cases, Petr Korda and Sharapova, fit none of the PED stereotypes.

In the meantime I'm going to celebrate that we have a new player with phenomenal talent and court sense, that he's absolutely professional with impeccable behavior on and off court, and that he's wiping the floor with players whose antics have been excruciating at best and criminal at worst for way too long.

by Anonymousreply 377May 8, 2022 6:16 PM

Charlie is just so, so great. Unreal what he's doing.

Those teefs, tho. Lord.

by Anonymousreply 378May 8, 2022 7:11 PM

He’s not doping- when I was 15 by the time I was 16 I put 25 pounds on a 6’2” frame. I was a local tennis champ as a kid- good enough to fill the draws at the big National events where Gerulitis and his were the stars. Guys regularly put on muscle all of a sudden, their games took off and In those days we did not work out and train like Carlos does. He’s not doping.

by Anonymousreply 379May 8, 2022 7:16 PM

r379 I guess most of them did a lot of doping growing up, and I guess most of them did and do doping during their pro careers.

by Anonymousreply 380May 8, 2022 7:26 PM

R359 I also work in gyms and thought the same as your brother. I'm seeing that other DLers are connecting the dots especially after such a final. His recovery, stamina is all of a sudden just too much. If he had done professional bodybuilding he'd be already in the IFBB.

by Anonymousreply 381May 8, 2022 8:17 PM

His stamina is pretty normal for someone who is 19. And frankly, acne is pretty normal at that age too

Stacked Carlos, damm. He took Zverev to the woodshed.

by Anonymousreply 385May 8, 2022 9:00 PM

R345, you very succinctly listed Novak's great weapons: Fitness and focus under pressure. (I'd add his other worldly flexibility to the list.)

But when you lose a step? Any fitness starts to get mitigated by the weakened reaction time and burst. (Btw, we see this in Rafa for sure.)

I can't see his focus waning, that's for sure. So that helps.

But those two assertions mean, to me, that he'll still win often. He'll still win Slams or be in contention just about every time for the time being.

But he won't dominate. If he had a huge forehand? Or a top serve? I could see him compensating with those shots for his missed step.

by Anonymousreply 386May 9, 2022 12:29 AM

I am not a Djokovic fan, but it is amazing to me that people are speculating about a precipitous decline after he made it to all four Slam finals last year and won three of them.

by Anonymousreply 387May 9, 2022 1:03 AM

In a couple of weeks Djokovic will be closer to forty than thirty. He's at that age when tennis players, even the greats, have historically begun to fall off the map. He's lost a third of the matches he's played so far this year, which is as bad as his 2018 season when he didn't rebound until the grass season. The element of mystery is greater this year since he missed the AO and IW/Miami, but resurgence at 35 is almost a tennis oxymoron. Only Rosewall, Federer and Nadal have accomplished that among the men. Whether Djokovic joins that select club remains to be seen, but my bet is that he won't make it a quartet.

Alcaraz has withdrawn from Rome.

Zverev has to be very happy about that. They were slated to meet in the QF

This is so shady. I love it. 😂

Although shouldn’t it be 42 slams in r391?

by Anonymousreply 392May 9, 2022 6:18 AM

R392: 21 + 20 + 0 = 41

by Anonymousreply 393May 9, 2022 8:18 AM

Where 0 is the operative word haha!

by Anonymousreply 394May 9, 2022 8:48 AM

ooooh, gurls

Lovely Laslo and Porna are going at it right now in Rome.

I have to admit I only have basic knowledge of the Zverev abuse scandal, mainly because I'm not tremendously motivated to go into the weeds. It does seem, though, that there is some "there" there. Ben Rothenberg certainly believes it's true.

That's why I really enjoyed Rothenberg's coverage of Zverev after his finals loss to Stacked Carlos. Overall, it appeared as if Zverev was feigning joy, and noting how Madrid is his favorite tournament, period. Then, during his press conference, he totally slammed the ATP scheduling.

I think he was right about the scheduling, but I was also intrigued by Rothenberg's reporting. It's clear he's out to take down Zverev, so the shade he threw at him was very clever. He also noted that Zverev had a point about the scheduling, but made a point to note the abrupt tone of it all. Is that shade? Am I misinterpreting?

This is all to say that I often appreciate Rothenberg, but I find some of his overzealous positions grating, and that's why many players attack or mock him.

by Anonymousreply 396May 9, 2022 12:25 PM

Even if he doesn't win this match, there's something so satisfying about watching Lorenzo Sonego torturing Shapovalov on Centre Court in front of a packed house in Rome. Some unbelievable points, and Shapo constantly about to blow a gasket.

There's something kind of sexy about Lorenzo to me. He has great long legs, I like that little gay strut he does. He seems like he would be bossy in bed...

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks there's something raw and sexy about Sonego R397. I think that goatee doesn't do him justice, but his face is handsome, great proportions, plus he's tall with a nice built and a bossy yet not bratty attitudine.

Yeah R393 I had a temporary memory lapse and thought Zverev had won a slam.

-392

by Anonymousreply 402May 9, 2022 2:08 PM

I thought that was very mature from Tsitsipas. Especially admitting that it's just another obstacle for his generation to win big titles (after they weren't able to really break the big 3). If Alcaraz is as good as he seems, the odds of Tsitsipas, Zverev, Rublev, Berrettini etc. winning a slam only get smaller. They could go the way of that Nishikori/Tsonga/Berdych/Dimitrov/Nalbandian/Davydenko generation.

by Anonymousreply 403May 9, 2022 2:18 PM

Aww Rafa is so sweet. Love that he supports Alcaraz. This is why he is so well liked and so popular, meanwhile people hate Novax, and for good reasons.

Was this a discussion about why he loves Putin so much, R401?

by Anonymousreply 405May 9, 2022 2:34 PM

I don't understand Shapovalov's rage. Sonego is Italian and they're playing in Italy. What do you expect?

by Anonymousreply 406May 9, 2022 2:39 PM

It seems like Shapo needs some sheltering at Shapo shelter.

by Anonymousreply 407May 9, 2022 2:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 410May 9, 2022 3:13 PM

It's a fine line between dumb and willfully ignorant.

by Anonymousreply 411May 9, 2022 3:18 PM

dumb guys can be great lays

by Anonymousreply 412May 9, 2022 3:19 PM

He should start a podcast called Shelterin’ wid Shapo.

With a rappin' ode to Putin as the intro.

Shapo has to be one of if not the dumbest guy on tour. Just watch some of his interviews.

Shapo should know it's against the rules to cross the net

R420 Osaka had drawn Sorribes Tormo again - for the first round no less. I think she was scared of that. Sorribes Tormo is a huge pain in the ass to play especially on slower clay like Rome is.

Apparently nobody asked Zverev why he thought he had any business being there to begin with after his Mexico meltdown.

by Anonymousreply 424May 9, 2022 7:23 PM

Ugliest outfit goes to Fognini. Yikes, what are they thinking. It is ugly and unflattering.

by Anonymousreply 425May 9, 2022 7:53 PM

I hate Zverev, but he's totally right.

by Anonymousreply 426May 9, 2022 8:15 PM

Maybe they should actually put that players union to good use. What happened to it anyway? It seems to have lost steam but they appear to still be carrying it on since they put a lot of nothing statement out about Russian and Belarussian players being barred from Wimbledon that also supported the Ukrainian players, so I wasn't sure what the point was.

And R426, I agree with you. The matches started too late.

lmfao at Shapovalov's meltdown and point penalty today. Yelling "shut the fuck up" to the crowd when you're playing a local opponent is really dumb. To his credit he apologized to the umpire at the end of the match though.

Zverev well tough shit it's part of the sport. He has a point but every job has its pros and cons. If he had won his SF in straight sets he'd have gotten more rest

Alcaraz had to go through 2 marathons against Nadal and Djokovic so he could have been excused for being tired too but he wasn't in the final.

by Anonymousreply 431May 9, 2022 10:41 PM

The Fog has great legs and needs to show MORE of them.

by Anonymousreply 432May 9, 2022 10:43 PM

It's not the ugliest outfit I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 433May 9, 2022 10:44 PM
