Wimbledon’s statement in response to actions by the ATP: it sounds strong until it gets to the end, where they murmur something about considering their “options.”

I have to think just how bad could Nadal's chronic foot injury be? It can't be THAT bad if he can play world class tennis for even 1 match, much less the matches and tournament he has played so far in 2022! Most of us think that such a foot injury would mean he couldn't even walk he would be in such pain! SO I guess his definition of chronic injury and pain must be different from all of us then?....

Sadly, Rafa will probably NEVER win another French Open.
They will forever put him in the same section of the draw as Novax and he can't seem to beat him.

I agree with barring the Russian players from Wimbledon, but also agree that points shouldn't be awarded. I think players will still play for money and prestige (it still counts as a "Slam" for the winner). If Med ends up as number 1 because of it, well, that's ok too. The main thing is that Russians hear that they're banned from Wimbledon.

It was a good decision from the ATP. If tomorrow my country invades another, what do I have to do with it as an individual citizen in millions? And getting banned just because I have a certain passport? It would have meant to ban all Americans from Wimbledon 2003 and on and many other times. Doesn't make sense.
Wimbledon is now basically a glorified exhibition like the old Olympics. Players will take part of course, but I suspect they won't put their heart into it, especially lower ranked men. The grass season is already so short, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to farm points in hard and clay courts Challengers those two weeks.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 21, 2022 12:43 PM |
R4, athletes get great pain meds. Remember Andy Murray quipping that he had more pills in him than Ozzy Osbourne? They must be able to get through at least one match flying on that stuff. But I doubt that anyone could play a whole tournament in that state; you'd still be aggravating your injury.

Here for you my fellow dataloungers: a lil' chart I've just put together showing the evolution of the number of players with a 2HBH in the top 20 versus the number of players with a 1HBH from 1970 (there were no player with a 2HBH in the top 20) to 2022 (i.e. current ranking showing that there are only three players left with a 1HBH, namely Titsy, Shopbottom, and Young Grigor). Have at it!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 21, 2022 10:21 PM |
I wonder if it's b/c of the predominance of heavy topspin in the game these days. That's hard for a 1HBH to handle.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 21, 2022 10:23 PM |
that is an interesting chart especially the period in the 90s and early 00s when the number of single to double handed backhands flip flop a few times
also interesting to note that while there aren't many in the top 10 currently, there are several in the top 100
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 22, 2022 1:52 AM |
I agree that Ruud has overplayed and it's probably why he seemed burnt out at the start of the clay season. There wasn't a need for him to play this week.
I love that Zverev is trapped in the top half with the 3 biggest contenders.
BTW any of the other Americans here...if you get the "YES" channel, which is a more obscure sports channel, they'll be having partial RG coverage. I assume they'll get more of the outer courts which during the first week of a slam can sometimes have the best matches. SOOOOOOO glad Tennis Channel gets main coverage instead of ESPN
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 22, 2022 2:46 AM |
Hilarious that Felix and Alcaraz are scheduled on Philippe-Chatrier while Zverev has to play second fiddle on Suzanne-Lenglen.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 22, 2022 2:46 AM |
did I see correctly that odds makers put Djokovic, then Alcaraz, then Nadal, then Tsitsipas and then Ruud as the top 5 male contenders? So they're betting on Ruud over Zverev which is interesting
for the women's I think they put Swiatek, then Jabeur, then Halep, then Sakkari, then Sabalenka, then Badosa then Gauff

Serves have gotten a lot bigger too, and the one handed backhand is just not nearly as effective on return. Especially kick serves.
Norrie won Lyon. He has now won every event in which he's been the top seed. Which is pretty good, I guess you can say he's a player who plays to his level and ranking (no wonder he's been able to keep his ranking up). Will be interesting to see him at Wimbledon with the home pressure, he doesn't seem like a fast court player.

I really hope Alcaraz lives up to the hype. He's the most exciting thing to happen in men's tennis in a long, long time. The Alcaraz-Djokovic-Nadal half is brutal. Zverev doesn't stand a chance against any of them except for maybe a hobbled Nadal. Nadal had to be disappointed to draw Djokovic in the quarters, especially given Djokovic has finally turned his season around on the clay and is the defending champ who took Nadal out in the semis last year. Hard to see that match, if it happens, as anything other than a grind, which won't help either one but especially Nadal if he truly is injured.

Good win for FAA pulling it out in five over clay-court specialist Varillas.
The seeds are out of whack with clay, case in point way back when 1 and 2 seeds Edberg and Becker were knocked out by Bruguera and Ivanisevic in the first RG round. Seeding should factor in the surface. Otherwise it creates these lopsided draws.

That's harsh and too early to call, R90. Felix is only 21. While he's no Alcaraz, I think that he'll get a few Slams before he retires, along the lines of Rafter or Ashe or Smith. by Anonymous | reply 103 | May 22, 2022 11:10 PM |
R103 he's definitely got the talent but he's a headcase. He had chances in that first set tiebreak too but wasn't clutch when it mattered. It has to be hard for him now to see players he grew up doing well. He won the prestigious Orange Bowl at the ages of 12 and 14. He reached a career high #2 in the junior rankings. He grew up with Fritz, Opelka, Tiafoe and Paul and has junior wins over Tsitsipas and Rublev. So a lot of the guys in the top 50 and even top 10 are guys he was once rivals with. I think his 2 biggest issues are mental and then being injury-prone. He's very fit, moves well and can hit the ball when he wants to. I'd like to see him be a bit more aggressive though. If he can stay healthy then I think he's due for some kind of breakthrough result by the end of the summer.

r117, Unless you're over 50 you have no idea what it used to be like before roofs, Doppler radar, ESPN 1-100 and internet. Only GS and major tournaments got tv time semis and finals but you could be preempted by HS football if you were in Texas or the match would be time delay or they would only show 1 semi.
On 4th of July you would plan your weekend around Wimbledon, turn on the TV and watch it rain for days at a time with NO idea when/if it would stop. Weather prediction was a total crap shoot.
There were bad calls all the time that made players go insane or just ruin the atmosphere for everyone.
When there was only ESPN, you could wait hours just to see tennis scores on the crawl. They didn't tell you what was coming up, like today, so you would watch an hour of basketball scores, the tennis scores would come on and they would cut to commercial. I used to travel on Sundays so I always missed finals and I'd be in my hotel room working, with ESPN playing for hours. You wouldn't even know who won tournament until a week later because tennis scores were only published on Sunday, if at all.

[quote] On 4th of July you would plan your weekend around Wimbledon, turn on the TV and watch it rain for days at a time with NO idea when/if it would stop. Weather prediction was a total crap shoot.

I remember getting so so excited for breakfast at wimbledon on NBC back in the day....
Heck, i'm old enough to remember every week, back in the 70's and 80's the "virginia slims of wherever" being on CBS Live! wood rackets, indoor carpet, small intimate arenas.... evert, martina, court, king, goolagong, wade, casals, morozova, mehville, richey gunter, and so on... so much fun and so exciting, including the old WCT men's indoor carpet tour stops...

Chrissie used to get so cunty on NBC. I remember I think it was 97, the year Hingis won. They asked her one last time before the match started how she saw the match and who would win. Chrissie snaps "I don't know how many more times I can say this", but Hingis is better and will win" Enberg was speechless for a moment and you could hear the steam coming out of Chrissie's ears.
She was right.

The thing about the WTA is you can be watching some innocuous match between two complete scrubs (like the upcoming Buzarnescu vs Brengle), and two weeks later the winner of that match is walking away with the slam. It is that random. I honestly wonder if even Iga's powers are enough to break the spell of the WTA messiness. The rest of the seeds are dropping like flies, it's certainly opening up to be her best opportunity to win a 2nd slam.

What no comment on Runes’s recent homophobic rant on the Chalkenger circuit? I won’t miss DL. I post a CB lot of the time to counter the bile and lies. It’s kind of depressing to see so much of it and my stubborn resistance is perhaps a way of countering what I see as self destructive behavior. The bar couldn't be set much lower than deliberating between Rune and Sloppo. Rune is obnoxious on court and comes across as just another tennis brat with a large sense of entitlement.
On a brighter note, happy to see both Giorgi and Petkovic through to the second round. Two of my old WTA favorites...
by Anonymous | reply 205 | May 24, 2022 5:27 PM |
R181 here. Yes, the person who linked the Stonewall story is what I was referring to. I have no idea about Stonewall's reputation, so if this is tabloid, then I apologize. I guess we'll know tomorrow.
Rune--stupid slur said in the moment, but not really too different than when I used to chastise myself for a weak shot. I say, give him the benefit of the doubt--for now--on that, primarily because to overreact makes us look like our panties are bunched. Instead, I have seen lots of bratty incidents on the court, so let's ridicule him for that.

I just watched Alcaraz news conference in English, good for him, and yes, he's only 18 but still I've know people with Down's syndrome who were more articulate. He's a fine specimen but no one knows how he will perform when he's on center court with millions of dollars on the line and someone in the stands calls his mother a whore or a paparazzo snaps his father with a stripper. Honestly, do you think he's ever read a book in his life? Maybe that's a plus.

by Anonymous | reply 233 | May 25, 2022 12:09 AM |
Tsonga is 1 of the most talented players not to win a slam. If he hadn't been so injury-prone I think he very well could have gotten at least 1. I'll never forget his 2014 Rogers Cup phenomenal form when he defeated Djokovic, Murray and Federer to win the title. Very few instances of non-big 4 defeating multiple big 4 members at the same tournament.
R223 I wouldn't compare Tsitsipas to Dementieva as the thing that stopped her from winning slams was an atrocious second serve. She had a mix of technical and mental issues. With Tsitsipas and many others (like Sabalenka) it's mostly mental.

Back to tennis… Lindsay Davenport, during the Raducanu match, discussed Emma’s coaching carousel.
Lindsay said what coach is going to want to sign on to work with someone who is likely to dump them in a few weeks/months?And when you see that, weeks after she wins a major out of the blue, she dumps her coach, it tells you it doesn’t matter what you help her accomplish.

Andrey Rublev on wild French Open outburst: ‘I lost my mind’
Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev said he “lost [his] mind’ during an “unprofessional” outburst Tuesday in the first round of the French Open.
The world No. 7 viciously spiked the ball against a courtside chair after dropping the first set of his opening round match against South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo.
The ball bounced off the court and knocked the hat off the head of a nearby groundsman when it flew through the air.
“I lost my mind for a moment, and of course I regret what I did. It’s unacceptable to hit the way the ball I hit it,” said Rublev.
“Better if I just hit the racket on the seat, because the ball can affect someone. This is unprofessional from my side, and hopefully I will never do it again.”
Rublev — who received a warning for his behavior — went on to edge past Kwon Soon-woo, registering a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win.
Rublev’s outburst also included the tennis pro slamming his water bottle off the court, which drew “oohs” from the crowd at Roland Garros in Paris.
Tim Henman, a British retired pro tennis player, said players need to take responsiblity for their emotions on the court.
“We have seen probably a little bit too much frustration that is almost endangering other people on the court,” Henman said on EuroSport. “The code of conduct has to be followed, the players have to be responsible for their actions.
“When you see a player break a racquet, you’re not going to condone it, but it’s not affecting anything else. When you start hitting balls around, it can get dangerous for others. We saw [Alexander] Zverev hitting the umpire’s chair [at the ATP 500 Mexican Open], it’s not a good look for the sport. You don’t want to be hitting balls in anger and hitting ball kids, that can be an expensive mistake, as I found out in 1995,” he said.
Henman was disqualified in the first round at Wimbledon Championships in 1995, after he accidentally smacked a ball at the ball girl.
The current ranked world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open in 2020, when he angrily swiped at a ball, which hit a line judge in the throat.

by Anonymous | reply 276 | May 25, 2022 7:12 PM |
Zverev is closer to 30 than 20, hardly up and coming, R273. I hope he follows the Kyrgios/Tomic trajectory. Rune is an anomaly. Rublev is Jekyll-Hyde, very nice off the court and takes out his anger on inanimate objects at least. FAA, Alcaraz, Ruud, Sinner, de Minaur, SebK, Baez, and Kecmanovic are almost always gentlemen on the court, especially compared to megalomaniac Djokovic. With the exception of Rune, I'm looking forward to the new breed currently under 23.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | May 25, 2022 7:19 PM |
R268, I hate it when players fist-pump after an opponent’s error, and Alcarez kept doing that. Considering that he was littering that court with his own UEs, it was particularly tacky.
by Anonymous | reply 278 | May 25, 2022 7:20 PM |
Alcaraz wasn't doing anything that Nadal didn't do. Nadal has had numerous marathon match wins thanks to terrible errors by his opponent and he was pumping that fist, vamos-ing and raising the arms at the end. So Alcaraz doesn't deserve any more criticism than that

disappointed that Zverev survived but glad Baez tested him. We're about to see if Zverev's stamina has improved at slams. In the past, early round struggles sapped his energy by the second week so he'd be ripe for an upset.
solid win for the talented Nakashima
not shocked that Fritz was upset because he's not good on clay
Bencic straight setting Andreescu is a surprise.

R303 and it's only because she got a walkover from Sherif. She's been in dire form this year too.
Aside from the bitchiness and shade (loved Pliskova calling out Osaka's potential Wimbledon withdrawal as fake) it genuinely feels like this is the lowest the WTA has ever been.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | May 26, 2022 1:45 AM |
R298.. amazing isn't it.. that rafa can play with a extremely painful injury that is "chronic" and comes and goes? hmm, for the other 99.9% of the population a so so painful chronic foot injury means we CAN NOT EVEN WALK! but yet he can play 2, 3, 4 hour 3 out of 5 set matches on slow red clay world class tennis? LOL!... so basically any chronic injury in his mind is because he's not 100%, only 95 to 99%?!...
by Anonymous | reply 305 | May 26, 2022 1:55 AM |
Uhm, just a wild guess, but maybe Rafa and his medical advisors evaluate the foot injury from the perspective of an elite competition athlete on a gruelling and unforgiving, almost year-round, match schedule.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | May 26, 2022 2:04 AM |
R306.. you're right, but for everyone else we think any chronic foot injury if it's that bad you can't walk, you certainly can't play world class tennis!... So maybe Nadal and his team need to tell everyone and explain that it's NOT that bad, just bad to play world class tennis? Then again, if HE CAN still play world class tennis, just how bad can it really be??....
Do we know if he gets and is allowed cortisone or painkiller shots for a match?..
same thing back when he played wawrinka at the aussie open final... his alleged back issue! I'm sorry but if you're back is REALLY that bad, you can't even move! And yet Nadal was still playing 2 more sets and it even got better?.. SO yes, once again, I call overblown....

by Anonymous | reply 313 | May 26, 2022 3:22 AM |
R311, why can’t it be Djokovid?
by Anonymous | reply 314 | May 26, 2022 3:41 AM |
Whenever Rafa loses a match he doesn't talk about his chronic foot injury in terms of competing in an elite tournament.
He categorically says that his injury is so bad that some days he can barely walk. That what he said in Rome and Madrid..
And let's not even talk about his stress riv fracture injury which he got in Indianwells which was not only healed in six weeks but he was completely fit to compete in Madrid.
Be prepared for reemergence if Nadal's injury during the QD ( against Nole) or in the final (against Stef)

I could never stan Oysterpancake because of her bad sportsmanship (and she always asks for every ball mark to be checked on clay). But she has such an entertaining, clownish, pantomime quality. She's like a cartoon version of a tennis player. From her hilarious facial expressions, to her outrageously bad outfits, to her combination of incredible winners and insane errors that land outside of the stadium. The WTA needs her.
I wanted to see her take it to Iga in the next round but it was not to be. Only 3 WTA top ten players making it out of the second round is embarrassing.

Today was a trying day at Shapo Shelter. With it being a holiday weekend, many decided to take the day off. So we were short staffed. Guess who was left to do the cleaning and sanitizing of the pens? Yup. You guessed it. I shudder to think how many more would’ve taken the day off were Shapo still in contention at the French.

impressive that low-ranked Zapata Miralles could break the massive Isner serve 5 times with 14 break points overall. In general it's hard for those outside the top 50 to get more than a couple chances in a match. Often times they don't get any chances.
Speaking of serves, FAA is on fire with 16 aces today against Krajinovic. I was surprised he was able to win in straight sets
Schwartzman put a beating on Dimitrov lol
Stephens looked quite solid today against Parry whose style of play reminded me of Suarez Navarro
Azarenka blew yet another chance to go deep in a slam, losing in 3 hour 19 minute match 3rd set tiebreak to the tenacious Teichmann
Sasnovich continues her good form and upsets Kerber
Fernandez really out-toughed Bencic

R416 I watched the entire Korda-Alcaraz match yesterday. Korda didn't play bad at all. His serve is insane and he actually did manage to win quite a few difficult points. The second set was the closest one. Unfortubately he looked kinda tired in the third. He made several mistakes and at the same time Alcaraz improved and had luck on his side. Several balls ended up touching the top of the net then bounced on Korda's side. Of course those balls were impossible for Korda to return.

I think every ATP initiative in defence of this is an excellent thing and can make every tennis player who is experiencing this feel safe."

Novak Djokovic offers help to Boris Becker in prison
After his comfortable third-round victory at the French Open, world No 1 Novak Djokovic took time to express concern for Boris Becker – his former coach and mentor – and to reveal that he has been in touch with Becker’s son Noah to offer assistance.
Becker spent three seasons working on Djokovic’s support staff, from 2014 to 2016. In that time, he helped transform his client’s reputation from a shaky closer-out of tournaments into a cold-eyed winner.
The two men have remained in close touch ever since, and Djokovic described himself as “heartbroken” when the news first broke of Becker’s two-and-a-half-year jail sentence for concealing assets.
On Friday night, the subject came up again after Djokovic’s routine 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Aljaz Bedene, the Slovenian who spent a couple of years playing under the British flag but has now reverted to his original nationality.
Asked about the Becker situation, Djokovic replied, “Even when we stopped working, our relationship kept going in a right way. I have been in touch with one of his sons, Noah, and asking if there is something that I could do.”
Although Djokovic is due in London next month to defend his Wimbledon title, he will probably not be able to visit Becker, who was recently moved from the Category B prison at Wandsworth in south London to a more relaxed environment in Huntercombe, Oxfordshire.
This is thought to be a sign that Becker will shortly be deported to Germany – an experience that Djokovic himself encountered in Australia four months ago, albeit in very different circumstances.
“It's terrible,” said Djokovic. “I'm just very sad that someone I know so well, and of course someone that is a legend of our sport, is going through what he's going through. It's been only less than a month. We know how long he has to be there. So I just hope that he will stay healthy and strong.”
Djokovic was in talkative mood on Friday after his frictionless progress into the second week of this tournament, where he is due to play Diego Schwartzman – the 15th seed from Argentina – on Sunday.
The match against Bedene was so incident-free that a variety of other subjects surfaced at his post-match press conference, including the presence of former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in the crowd. “It positively affected me,” Djokovic said. “I had even more motivation to perform.”
And then there was the prickly issue of Australia, the nation where Djokovic has won nine of his 20 major titles. In January, he had his Australian visa cancelled in a row over his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid. This automatically triggered a three-year ban from re-entering the country, although there are hopes that Anthony Albanese’s new Labor government could waive the penalty.
“In terms of the government, yes, I heard the news,” said Djokovic in relation to last weekend’s Australian election. “But I don't know anything about whether my visa is going to be reinstated or whether I'm going to be allowed to come back to Australia.
“I don't hold any grudges,” he added. “Look, you know, it was what it was. If I have an opportunity to go back to Australia and play a place where I made the biggest success in my career on grand slam, I would love to come back.”
by Anonymous | reply 442 | May 28, 2022 2:21 PM |
Some inexplicable scheduling at Roland Garros on Friday meant that Djokovic and his old rival Rafael Nadal occupied very similar timeslots on the two main stadia, even though they are the tournament’s two biggest draw cards.
Nadal also swept past his third-round opponent, Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, in double-quick time to earn a crack at ninth seed Felix Auger Aliassime on Sunday.
This is an fascinating draw because Nadal’s uncle Toni has been coaching Auger Aliassime, a 21-year-old Canadian, for a little over a year. The two players haven’t faced off on a tennis court in that time, which gives an extra level of intrigue to their first encounter since 2019.
“I already talked with Toni after my match,” said Nadal after despatching van der Zandschulp by a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 scoreline. “I know you guys are gonna ask the question, but for me it's very simple. He's my uncle. I don't think he will be able to want me to lose, without a doubt, but he's a professional and he's with another player.
“I don't know what's gonna happen, if he's gonna stay in the box or not, but I don't care. I have zero problem with that. So it's not a story at all for me.”

The French crowd proving DL's point: Alize Cornet retired on Phillip Chatrier against Zheng Qinwen and they booed her off the court (in what may be her last French Open ever). Yikes.
Zheng and Giorgi both producing amazing tennis and Iga struggled today with Kovinic. I think one of them could be licking their lips at an upset, perhaps Zheng who plays her in the next round.

Ruud is not ready to win a slam at this point. He seemed to be peaking in Miami as hardcourts are clearly not his best surface but he's been quite inconsistent during the whole clay season.
He gets a ton of topspin on his shots which help on clay but his backhand is quite attackable

I need some slamless #1 on the men's tour à la WTA for some ranking drama.
Medvedev could have made it last year on a few occasions most notably had he reached the Roland Garros final and not winning it. This year Zverev would have become the new slamless no. 1 by winning both Rome and Madrid.
by Anonymous | reply 464 | May 28, 2022 8:04 PM |
it seems less likely to happen now with Alcaraz unless he chokes in a slam final. He seems like he's got the mentality to keep winning
Tsitsipas, Zverev, Rublev and Ruud all play a lot of tournaments so 1 of them could pull off the slamless #1 feat at some point
I'm sure Rios would love not to be the only one with that dubious distinction on the ATP side

Totally agree, R471. Fun to see competitive matches and upsets early on in R1 and R2, but then R3 and R4 are often really flat. Then in the QFs, it picks up again. I was thinking about this very thing this morning, how often it seems to happen in Slams.

I’ve never understood this jargonistic use of “clutch” in tennis. Could someone please explain?
TIA
by Anonymous | reply 473 | May 28, 2022 10:38 PM |
R473, clutch is coming through when the pressure is at its most intense.
Rafa, Novak and Fed are all considered clutch. While they make errors (like any other tennis player), they tend to NOT make errors at those crucial moments in a match when the match depends on coming through. Break points. A tough volley. In a tiebreak. They don't wilt.
It's why they all have 20 slams (at least) and other great players don't.
by Anonymous | reply 474 | May 28, 2022 10:57 PM |
Got it, thanks r474. I could never work out whether I was supposed to be concentrating on the semantics of clutch as in a car’s clutch, or the verb to clutch, as in grip and hold on to something. It’s actually closer to what they do in a clutch, i.e. a tight or critical situation. Thanks for helping to clear that up.
