The Gays and Tennis: French Open 2022

Will Rafa make it 22 majors, or will the new star Carlos Alcaraz (Garfia) get his first major and dethrone Nadal? Will Boobs come out and spoil it for all?

On the women's side, will Svee-i-tek triumph?

On which team are you?

Wimbledon’s statement in response to actions by the ATP: it sounds strong until it gets to the end, where they murmur something about considering their “options.”

I have to think just how bad could Nadal's chronic foot injury be? It can't be THAT bad if he can play world class tennis for even 1 match, much less the matches and tournament he has played so far in 2022! Most of us think that such a foot injury would mean he couldn't even walk he would be in such pain! SO I guess his definition of chronic injury and pain must be different from all of us then?....

by Anonymousreply 4May 21, 2022 1:27 AM

Sadly, Rafa will probably NEVER win another French Open.

They will forever put him in the same section of the draw as Novax and he can't seem to beat him.

I agree with barring the Russian players from Wimbledon, but also agree that points shouldn't be awarded. I think players will still play for money and prestige (it still counts as a "Slam" for the winner). If Med ends up as number 1 because of it, well, that's ok too. The main thing is that Russians hear that they're banned from Wimbledon.

by Anonymousreply 22May 21, 2022 5:30 AM

Casper and Joao would make purdy babies together.

by Anonymousreply 23May 21, 2022 10:27 AM

It was a good decision from the ATP. If tomorrow my country invades another, what do I have to do with it as an individual citizen in millions? And getting banned just because I have a certain passport? It would have meant to ban all Americans from Wimbledon 2003 and on and many other times. Doesn't make sense.

Wimbledon is now basically a glorified exhibition like the old Olympics. Players will take part of course, but I suspect they won't put their heart into it, especially lower ranked men. The grass season is already so short, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to farm points in hard and clay courts Challengers those two weeks.

by Anonymousreply 24May 21, 2022 12:43 PM

R4, athletes get great pain meds. Remember Andy Murray quipping that he had more pills in him than Ozzy Osbourne? They must be able to get through at least one match flying on that stuff. But I doubt that anyone could play a whole tournament in that state; you'd still be aggravating your injury.

by Anonymousreply 25May 21, 2022 12:53 PM

I find Norrie so handsome... too bad his body is meh...

by Anonymousreply 26May 21, 2022 1:51 PM

Nice Guy Norrie outlasts Molcan and hoovers up another 250 in Lyon. He'll be back in the Top 10 after Wimbledon with Berretini dropping out with his big points loss.

by Anonymousreply 30May 21, 2022 4:49 PM

Great match between Kerber and Juvan, very tight (3 tiebreaks) for Kerber to win Strasbourg. Can't imagine her winning many more tournaments. She's said that tennis isn't even in her top 3 priorities in life.

by Anonymousreply 31May 21, 2022 5:26 PM

Ruud won today... after 3 hours. He isn't playing well lately. I wonder how he'll do in French Open.

by Anonymousreply 32May 21, 2022 5:34 PM

Ruud even got a warning today from the umpire. That isn't normal for him, right?

by Anonymousreply 33May 21, 2022 5:34 PM

[quote] Ruud even got a warning today from the umpire.

I didn't watch the first two sets (still asleep). For what did he get the warning? I did see the fat man get escorted out.

by Anonymousreply 35May 21, 2022 5:41 PM

Ruud is a top 10, playing a 250 the week before a GS is a big no, specially when you have such bad record on GS

R34 I don't know. I just saw the highlights on the news. I think it was because he had a fit on court, he was basically just yelling at himself and swearing for playing bad, so the umpire gave him a warning.

by Anonymousreply 40May 21, 2022 9:05 PM

Here for you my fellow dataloungers: a lil' chart I've just put together showing the evolution of the number of players with a 2HBH in the top 20 versus the number of players with a 1HBH from 1970 (there were no player with a 2HBH in the top 20) to 2022 (i.e. current ranking showing that there are only three players left with a 1HBH, namely Titsy, Shopbottom, and Young Grigor). Have at it!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 41May 21, 2022 10:21 PM

I wonder if it's b/c of the predominance of heavy topspin in the game these days. That's hard for a 1HBH to handle.

by Anonymousreply 42May 21, 2022 10:23 PM

that is an interesting chart especially the period in the 90s and early 00s when the number of single to double handed backhands flip flop a few times

also interesting to note that while there aren't many in the top 10 currently, there are several in the top 100

by Anonymousreply 43May 22, 2022 1:52 AM

I agree that Ruud has overplayed and it's probably why he seemed burnt out at the start of the clay season. There wasn't a need for him to play this week.

I love that Zverev is trapped in the top half with the 3 biggest contenders.

BTW any of the other Americans here...if you get the "YES" channel, which is a more obscure sports channel, they'll be having partial RG coverage. I assume they'll get more of the outer courts which during the first week of a slam can sometimes have the best matches. SOOOOOOO glad Tennis Channel gets main coverage instead of ESPN

by Anonymousreply 44May 22, 2022 2:46 AM

Hilarious that Felix and Alcaraz are scheduled on Philippe-Chatrier while Zverev has to play second fiddle on Suzanne-Lenglen.

by Anonymousreply 45May 22, 2022 2:46 AM

did I see correctly that odds makers put Djokovic, then Alcaraz, then Nadal, then Tsitsipas and then Ruud as the top 5 male contenders? So they're betting on Ruud over Zverev which is interesting

for the women's I think they put Swiatek, then Jabeur, then Halep, then Sakkari, then Sabalenka, then Badosa then Gauff

by Anonymousreply 46May 22, 2022 2:51 AM

GAUFF? a odds contender?

by Anonymousreply 47May 22, 2022 2:55 AM

I'm so glad RG started having its first day on Sunday

there are some potentially tough matches on day 1

by Anonymousreply 48May 22, 2022 3:16 AM

Serves have gotten a lot bigger too, and the one handed backhand is just not nearly as effective on return. Especially kick serves.

Norrie won Lyon. He has now won every event in which he's been the top seed. Which is pretty good, I guess you can say he's a player who plays to his level and ranking (no wonder he's been able to keep his ranking up). Will be interesting to see him at Wimbledon with the home pressure, he doesn't seem like a fast court player.

by Anonymousreply 49May 22, 2022 3:30 AM

FAA has a very easy draw till rd16 and even in the fourth round he would probably face an "injured" Nadal.

by Anonymousreply 55May 22, 2022 10:26 AM

Another comeback that is painful to watch is Lucas Puoille's. In almost two years he barely passed a few first rounds in countless tournaments, including Challengers. It's clear his elbow injury/surgery undermined his game. He'd be better off teaching tennis in an elite French country club rather than keep wasting money on his dead tour career.

I really hope Alcaraz lives up to the hype. He's the most exciting thing to happen in men's tennis in a long, long time. The Alcaraz-Djokovic-Nadal half is brutal. Zverev doesn't stand a chance against any of them except for maybe a hobbled Nadal. Nadal had to be disappointed to draw Djokovic in the quarters, especially given Djokovic has finally turned his season around on the clay and is the defending champ who took Nadal out in the semis last year. Hard to see that match, if it happens, as anything other than a grind, which won't help either one but especially Nadal if he truly is injured.

by Anonymousreply 78May 22, 2022 3:55 PM

Which white male players have yellow skin?

by Anonymousreply 79May 22, 2022 4:18 PM

Good win for FAA pulling it out in five over clay-court specialist Varillas.

The seeds are out of whack with clay, case in point way back when 1 and 2 seeds Edberg and Becker were knocked out by Bruguera and Ivanisevic in the first RG round. Seeding should factor in the surface. Otherwise it creates these lopsided draws.

by Anonymousreply 82May 22, 2022 5:09 PM

R82.. SO So sooo desperate for a American champion aren't they!

seems like they have selective amnesia forgetting all the great champions who were champions when they WERE teenagers!

from evert to austin to graf to seles to serena to venus to hingis and so on.... and those who had far greater results than Gauff as teenagers ala jaeger, capriati and so on..

by Anonymousreply 83May 22, 2022 5:12 PM

Muguruza's case is very strange, it's not that she is playing bad, she starts all her matches playing pretty well but in the middle of the match she disconnects and doesn't come back. She has a lot of work to do to recover.

Felix was lucky, but he needs to be more careful and start to matches showing he is a top player

by Anonymousreply 84May 22, 2022 5:44 PM

phew so glad Stephens ended her 5 match losing streak. She finally got her first clay win this season against a huge German linebacker. I'm surprised she was able to turn it around after a tough first set

by Anonymousreply 93May 22, 2022 6:57 PM

That's harsh and too early to call, R90. Felix is only 21. While he's no Alcaraz, I think that he'll get a few Slams before he retires, along the lines of Rafter or Ashe or Smith. In the meantime it's nice to see someone with his intelligence, affability, professionalism, and cool cat demeanor on the Tour. Those qualities seem to be in short supply these days.

During this break in the RG action, a question for just down the road. Will Serena play at Wimbledon as she’s previously indicated?

by Anonymousreply 102May 22, 2022 10:37 PM

R98, I was so hoping that maybe Mmoh could catch fire and get a win...any win...but the problem with him, far too often is he just doesn't CATCH fire. I mean, there's a fire in my loins when I watch him, but that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 103May 22, 2022 11:10 PM

R103 he's definitely got the talent but he's a headcase. He had chances in that first set tiebreak too but wasn't clutch when it mattered. It has to be hard for him now to see players he grew up doing well. He won the prestigious Orange Bowl at the ages of 12 and 14. He reached a career high #2 in the junior rankings. He grew up with Fritz, Opelka, Tiafoe and Paul and has junior wins over Tsitsipas and Rublev. So a lot of the guys in the top 50 and even top 10 are guys he was once rivals with. I think his 2 biggest issues are mental and then being injury-prone. He's very fit, moves well and can hit the ball when he wants to. I'd like to see him be a bit more aggressive though. If he can stay healthy then I think he's due for some kind of breakthrough result by the end of the summer.

Does the French Open only have one roof? They are honestly still so ghetto. The entire tennis world is now forced to watch Krejcikova (playing like shit as it's her first match in months) thumping some poor hopeless local wildcard.

by Anonymousreply 117May 23, 2022 12:24 PM

Ugh, I can't stand Krejcikova.

by Anonymousreply 118May 23, 2022 1:08 PM

r117, Unless you're over 50 you have no idea what it used to be like before roofs, Doppler radar, ESPN 1-100 and internet. Only GS and major tournaments got tv time semis and finals but you could be preempted by HS football if you were in Texas or the match would be time delay or they would only show 1 semi.

On 4th of July you would plan your weekend around Wimbledon, turn on the TV and watch it rain for days at a time with NO idea when/if it would stop. Weather prediction was a total crap shoot.

There were bad calls all the time that made players go insane or just ruin the atmosphere for everyone.

When there was only ESPN, you could wait hours just to see tennis scores on the crawl. They didn't tell you what was coming up, like today, so you would watch an hour of basketball scores, the tennis scores would come on and they would cut to commercial. I used to travel on Sundays so I always missed finals and I'd be in my hotel room working, with ESPN playing for hours. You wouldn't even know who won tournament until a week later because tennis scores were only published on Sunday, if at all.

Heck, i'm old enough to remember every week, back in the 70's and 80's the "virginia slims of wherever" being on CBS Live! wood rackets, indoor carpet, small intimate arenas.... evert, martina, court, king, goolagong, wade, casals, morozova, mehville, richey gunter, and so on... so much fun and so exciting, including the old WCT men's indoor carpet tour stops...

by Anonymousreply 121May 23, 2022 1:55 PM

Well, Osaka didn't last long on her least favorite service. Did she skip the press conference?

by Anonymousreply 122May 23, 2022 2:01 PM

Reilly Opelka lost too

by Anonymousreply 123May 23, 2022 2:02 PM

Now Osaka is talking about skipping Wimbledon. She can't wait to get back on a hardcourt.

by Anonymousreply 124May 23, 2022 2:26 PM

Wimbledon early rounds were on HBOnly when I was growing up. And you would have to sit through hours of rain delays because they couldn't leave the coverage.

More info on Daddy Fritz's potential bisexuality??. Since he's a horn dog I can maybe believe this. Also, did he ever experiment with his BFF and the DL's very own sweet Tommy Paul? These are the important things the DL really has to know.

by Anonymousreply 125May 23, 2022 3:19 PM

I didn’t realize there are bi rumors about Daddy Fritz.

emma raducanu is through to 2nd round. don't think she will go far, she has that back issue. why even play? she should rest her back.

by Anonymousreply 141May 23, 2022 6:34 PM

The WTA is a mess. Raducanu looked super happy just to win a 1st round match against someone barely ranked in the top 200. Andreescu also had a 3-setter against someone ranked 168. Not to mention that in-form Jabeur is out, and so on.

Chrissie used to get so cunty on NBC. I remember I think it was 97, the year Hingis won. They asked her one last time before the match started how she saw the match and who would win. Chrissie snaps "I don't know how many more times I can say this", but Hingis is better and will win" Enberg was speechless for a moment and you could hear the steam coming out of Chrissie's ears.

She was right.

by Anonymousreply 160May 23, 2022 10:23 PM

Enberg was annoying as fuck so I don't blame her for snapping at him

by Anonymousreply 161May 23, 2022 10:28 PM

[quote] You guys have got me feeling nostalgic for the old NBC Wimbledon days. Here's the theme for you. Love it!

I used to get so excited the first time I’d hear that when the tournament began. In the last years that NBC had Wimbledon they stopped playing it before the finals.

by Anonymousreply 162May 23, 2022 10:30 PM

Raducanu's opponent was up a set and a break and got nervy. To Raducanu's credit, she went through that opening, but she was thoroughly outclassed until that point.

If the rumors I'm reading about on Twitter are correct, we're all going to have to find a new forum--period--to bitch not just about our tennis guys, but anything. The Tweet read that tomorrow, Wednesday, DL will make the announcement that it's closing down at the end of this month. One week! I've already saved some non-tennis threads to peruse in the future. Fuuuuck.

by Anonymousreply 181May 24, 2022 12:17 PM

I refuse to pay to watch tennis so I end up listening with this cute Aussie, Cam Williams. He's funny and interacts with the chat. He also calls out stuff happening in the stands. He called out FAA's twin sister for being totally bored in Rome and he calls out the cameramen for perving on fans which is still very common.

Such an exciting, charismatic player. He'll be genuinely greatly missed.

by Anonymousreply 195May 24, 2022 3:36 PM

Who was the hottie sitting next to Gauff’s father in the stands?

by Anonymousreply 196May 24, 2022 4:02 PM

The thing about the WTA is you can be watching some innocuous match between two complete scrubs (like the upcoming Buzarnescu vs Brengle), and two weeks later the winner of that match is walking away with the slam. It is that random. I honestly wonder if even Iga's powers are enough to break the spell of the WTA messiness. The rest of the seeds are dropping like flies, it's certainly opening up to be her best opportunity to win a 2nd slam.

What no comment on Runes’s recent homophobic rant on the Chalkenger circuit? I won’t miss DL. I post a CB lot of the time to counter the bile and lies. It’s kind of depressing to see so much of it and my stubborn resistance is perhaps a way of countering what I see as self destructive behavior. At times posters rip into people I actually know or have known. I’ve gone off Facebook for the same reason. Maybe I’ll be calmer without DL, lol.

by Anonymousreply 201May 24, 2022 5:03 PM

How about telling us about it and posting a source so we can all rip him to shreds?

by Anonymousreply 202May 24, 2022 5:09 PM

Is it another incident or are we still talking about the one time?

by Anonymousreply 203May 24, 2022 5:10 PM

We discussed Rune's outburst at length at the time, and it's been brought up many times since. Sorry we don't 'perform' for you, Charlie, whenever you deign to stop by.

by Anonymousreply 204May 24, 2022 5:17 PM

The bar couldn't be set much lower than deliberating between Rune and Sloppo. Rune is obnoxious on court and comes across as just another tennis brat with a large sense of entitlement.

On a brighter note, happy to see both Giorgi and Petkovic through to the second round. Two of my old WTA favorites...

by Anonymousreply 205May 24, 2022 5:27 PM

R181 here. Yes, the person who linked the Stonewall story is what I was referring to. I have no idea about Stonewall's reputation, so if this is tabloid, then I apologize. I guess we'll know tomorrow.

Rune--stupid slur said in the moment, but not really too different than when I used to chastise myself for a weak shot. I say, give him the benefit of the doubt--for now--on that, primarily because to overreact makes us look like our panties are bunched. Instead, I have seen lots of bratty incidents on the court, so let's ridicule him for that.

by Anonymousreply 206May 24, 2022 5:39 PM

Great match going on between Demon and Gaston.

4-4 in the final set.

Crowd going bananas.

by Anonymousreply 207May 24, 2022 5:51 PM

I just watched Alcaraz news conference in English, good for him, and yes, he's only 18 but still I've know people with Down's syndrome who were more articulate. He's a fine specimen but no one knows how he will perform when he's on center court with millions of dollars on the line and someone in the stands calls his mother a whore or a paparazzo snaps his father with a stripper. Honestly, do you think he's ever read a book in his life? Maybe that's a plus.

Watching Tsonga's last match and seeing him cry make me weepy! RG really celebrated him today. They brought out all his previous coaches, Monfils, his siblings, parents, and wife and kids. The crowd remained standing through his last point. Too bad about his shoulder injury.

He will be missed.

by Anonymousreply 220May 24, 2022 8:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 222May 24, 2022 8:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 232May 24, 2022 11:17 PM

Big Dick vs Big Dick (PCB vs Simon)

by Anonymousreply 233May 25, 2022 12:09 AM

Tsonga is 1 of the most talented players not to win a slam. If he hadn't been so injury-prone I think he very well could have gotten at least 1. I'll never forget his 2014 Rogers Cup phenomenal form when he defeated Djokovic, Murray and Federer to win the title. Very few instances of non-big 4 defeating multiple big 4 members at the same tournament.

R223 I wouldn't compare Tsitsipas to Dementieva as the thing that stopped her from winning slams was an atrocious second serve. She had a mix of technical and mental issues. With Tsitsipas and many others (like Sabalenka) it's mostly mental.

by Anonymousreply 238May 25, 2022 10:28 AM

Me, too, R238. And the DLers don’t read so wouldn’t have seen the results of a recent study that should that breeds do not have demonstrable differences in behavior.

by Anonymousreply 239May 25, 2022 10:42 AM

Back to tennis… Lindsay Davenport, during the Raducanu match, discussed Emma’s coaching carousel.

Lindsay said what coach is going to want to sign on to work with someone who is likely to dump them in a few weeks/months?And when you see that, weeks after she wins a major out of the blue, she dumps her coach, it tells you it doesn’t matter what you help her accomplish.

by Anonymousreply 240May 25, 2022 10:46 AM

The coach she had at the US Open was always a temporary coach just for that tournament, to be fair. He did not want to be a full time coach on the WTA and has a kid he wants to train.

Andrey Rublev on wild French Open outburst: ‘I lost my mind’

Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev said he “lost [his] mind’ during an “unprofessional” outburst Tuesday in the first round of the French Open.

The world No. 7 viciously spiked the ball against a courtside chair after dropping the first set of his opening round match against South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo.

The ball bounced off the court and knocked the hat off the head of a nearby groundsman when it flew through the air.

“I lost my mind for a moment, and of course I regret what I did. It’s unacceptable to hit the way the ball I hit it,” said Rublev.

“Better if I just hit the racket on the seat, because the ball can affect someone. This is unprofessional from my side, and hopefully I will never do it again.”

Rublev — who received a warning for his behavior — went on to edge past Kwon Soon-woo, registering a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win.

Rublev’s outburst also included the tennis pro slamming his water bottle off the court, which drew “oohs” from the crowd at Roland Garros in Paris.

Tim Henman, a British retired pro tennis player, said players need to take responsiblity for their emotions on the court.

“We have seen probably a little bit too much frustration that is almost endangering other people on the court,” Henman said on EuroSport. “The code of conduct has to be followed, the players have to be responsible for their actions.

“When you see a player break a racquet, you’re not going to condone it, but it’s not affecting anything else. When you start hitting balls around, it can get dangerous for others. We saw [Alexander] Zverev hitting the umpire’s chair [at the ATP 500 Mexican Open], it’s not a good look for the sport. You don’t want to be hitting balls in anger and hitting ball kids, that can be an expensive mistake, as I found out in 1995,” he said.

Henman was disqualified in the first round at Wimbledon Championships in 1995, after he accidentally smacked a ball at the ball girl.

The current ranked world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open in 2020, when he angrily swiped at a ball, which hit a line judge in the throat.

Alcaraz onto the 5th set. His opponent is really hating himself for letting this slip away.

by Anonymousreply 265May 25, 2022 6:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 266May 25, 2022 6:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 267May 25, 2022 6:05 PM

Ramos played wonderfully, used every inch of the court but choked too many times and HOW THE FUCK can you even THINK of doing three consecutive smashes with a SLICE?! Stupid strategy. Very poor from Alcaraz to raise his arms in glory on a missed volley from the opponent.

by Anonymousreply 268May 25, 2022 6:21 PM

R256 I'm so sick of these new up and coming players. They're ALL assholes. Rublev, Zverev, Rune etc. The list is long. RIP tennis when these guys take over. Nobody will want to watch.

by Anonymousreply 273May 25, 2022 6:58 PM

Alcaraz was trending worldwide on twitter after that match.

by Anonymousreply 274May 25, 2022 7:00 PM

Alcaraz is great but he's another new male player suffering from fug. Yikes!

by Anonymousreply 275May 25, 2022 7:06 PM

I think Alcaraz is cute. After he grows out of acne and gets some minor dental work he’ll be a stunner

by Anonymousreply 276May 25, 2022 7:12 PM

Zverev is closer to 30 than 20, hardly up and coming, R273. I hope he follows the Kyrgios/Tomic trajectory. Rune is an anomaly. Rublev is Jekyll-Hyde, very nice off the court and takes out his anger on inanimate objects at least. FAA, Alcaraz, Ruud, Sinner, de Minaur, SebK, Baez, and Kecmanovic are almost always gentlemen on the court, especially compared to megalomaniac Djokovic. With the exception of Rune, I'm looking forward to the new breed currently under 23.

by Anonymousreply 277May 25, 2022 7:19 PM

R268, I hate it when players fist-pump after an opponent’s error, and Alcarez kept doing that. Considering that he was littering that court with his own UEs, it was particularly tacky.

by Anonymousreply 278May 25, 2022 7:20 PM

Alcaraz wasn't doing anything that Nadal didn't do. Nadal has had numerous marathon match wins thanks to terrible errors by his opponent and he was pumping that fist, vamos-ing and raising the arms at the end. So Alcaraz doesn't deserve any more criticism than that

by Anonymousreply 279May 25, 2022 7:21 PM

Goodbye big penis Gasquet!

by Anonymousreply 280May 25, 2022 7:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 282May 25, 2022 7:24 PM

disappointed that Zverev survived but glad Baez tested him. We're about to see if Zverev's stamina has improved at slams. In the past, early round struggles sapped his energy by the second week so he'd be ripe for an upset.

solid win for the talented Nakashima

not shocked that Fritz was upset because he's not good on clay

Bencic straight setting Andreescu is a surprise.

Impressed that Sebi took out Gasgay so easily. Gasgay has been playing well.

Bencic took Bianca to the woodshed, didn't she? I'd think Bianca's game would translate better to clay.

by Anonymousreply 292May 25, 2022 9:26 PM

Bianca is weird. It's like she had 1 great season but then constantly took a lot of time off and now she's pretty much out of contending the top titles even though I think she has more talent and ability than most. I'd love to know what's really going on with her. It doesn't seem normal.

by Anonymousreply 303May 25, 2022 10:46 PM

R303 and it's only because she got a walkover from Sherif. She's been in dire form this year too.

Aside from the bitchiness and shade (loved Pliskova calling out Osaka's potential Wimbledon withdrawal as fake) it genuinely feels like this is the lowest the WTA has ever been.

by Anonymousreply 304May 26, 2022 1:45 AM

R298.. amazing isn't it.. that rafa can play with a extremely painful injury that is "chronic" and comes and goes? hmm, for the other 99.9% of the population a so so painful chronic foot injury means we CAN NOT EVEN WALK! but yet he can play 2, 3, 4 hour 3 out of 5 set matches on slow red clay world class tennis? LOL!... so basically any chronic injury in his mind is because he's not 100%, only 95 to 99%?!...

by Anonymousreply 305May 26, 2022 1:55 AM

Uhm, just a wild guess, but maybe Rafa and his medical advisors evaluate the foot injury from the perspective of an elite competition athlete on a gruelling and unforgiving, almost year-round, match schedule.

by Anonymousreply 306May 26, 2022 2:04 AM

R306.. you're right, but for everyone else we think any chronic foot injury if it's that bad you can't walk, you certainly can't play world class tennis!... So maybe Nadal and his team need to tell everyone and explain that it's NOT that bad, just bad to play world class tennis? Then again, if HE CAN still play world class tennis, just how bad can it really be??....

Do we know if he gets and is allowed cortisone or painkiller shots for a match?..

same thing back when he played wawrinka at the aussie open final... his alleged back issue! I'm sorry but if you're back is REALLY that bad, you can't even move! And yet Nadal was still playing 2 more sets and it even got better?.. SO yes, once again, I call overblown....

by Anonymousreply 313May 26, 2022 3:22 AM

R311, why can’t it be Djokovid?

by Anonymousreply 314May 26, 2022 3:41 AM

Whenever Rafa loses a match he doesn't talk about his chronic foot injury in terms of competing in an elite tournament.

He categorically says that his injury is so bad that some days he can barely walk. That what he said in Rome and Madrid..

And let's not even talk about his stress riv fracture injury which he got in Indianwells which was not only healed in six weeks but he was completely fit to compete in Madrid.

Be prepared for reemergence if Nadal's injury during the QD ( against Nole) or in the final (against Stef)

I could never stan Oysterpancake because of her bad sportsmanship (and she always asks for every ball mark to be checked on clay). But she has such an entertaining, clownish, pantomime quality. She's like a cartoon version of a tennis player. From her hilarious facial expressions, to her outrageously bad outfits, to her combination of incredible winners and insane errors that land outside of the stadium. The WTA needs her.

I wanted to see her take it to Iga in the next round but it was not to be. Only 3 WTA top ten players making it out of the second round is embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 388May 27, 2022 8:12 PM

Why don’t they stick to predominately white at all tournaments or at least the majors? Bright colors and graphics are gaudy.

Korda has lezface

Today was a trying day at Shapo Shelter. With it being a holiday weekend, many decided to take the day off. So we were short staffed. Guess who was left to do the cleaning and sanitizing of the pens? Yup. You guessed it. I shudder to think how many more would’ve taken the day off were Shapo still in contention at the French.

by Anonymousreply 392May 27, 2022 8:27 PM

I like white for Wimbledon but also enjoy seeing the players unleash their wilder fashion choices. Makes for some laughs.

That Hydrogen shirt is something. It has retro tattoos on it. When I first saw it I looked it up to see if it really was a real tennis clothing sponsor shirt.

by Anonymousreply 401May 27, 2022 9:22 PM

Koda didn't even play that badly. I think Alcaraz had a bit of luck, especially in that last game in the third set. But overall he was better. He played with more variation. I swear Koda's serve saved him several times.

by Anonymousreply 405May 28, 2022 1:49 AM

Si, Rafa!!

by Anonymousreply 406May 28, 2022 2:03 AM

impressive that low-ranked Zapata Miralles could break the massive Isner serve 5 times with 14 break points overall. In general it's hard for those outside the top 50 to get more than a couple chances in a match. Often times they don't get any chances.

Speaking of serves, FAA is on fire with 16 aces today against Krajinovic. I was surprised he was able to win in straight sets

Schwartzman put a beating on Dimitrov lol

Stephens looked quite solid today against Parry whose style of play reminded me of Suarez Navarro

Azarenka blew yet another chance to go deep in a slam, losing in 3 hour 19 minute match 3rd set tiebreak to the tenacious Teichmann

Sasnovich continues her good form and upsets Kerber

Fernandez really out-toughed Bencic

by Anonymousreply 407May 28, 2022 2:23 AM

Korda didn’t even take a set? I was hoping for a closer match… didn’t he beat Carlito on clay this season?

by Anonymousreply 408May 28, 2022 2:27 AM

Carlo!

by Anonymousreply 409May 28, 2022 2:42 AM

Korda didn't play too badly. He needs a bigger serve, more steady forehand and to improve those volleys though. Alcaraz is just a level above him now

by Anonymousreply 410May 28, 2022 3:00 AM

Where are all the DL boyfriends?

by Anonymousreply 411May 28, 2022 5:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 412May 28, 2022 7:04 AM

Yesterday was great for me. Can't stand eastern Europe and Russia taking over tennis. I always root against the asshole players and players from homophobic countries. That's why it's great that the Spanish armada is winning. The players are not assholes, like so many other players, and Spain is probably the most gay friendly country in Europe. Zapata and Alcaraz are through. Nadal is through. And hottie Schwartzman from Argentina managed to win against Dimitrov! Yay!

by Anonymousreply 413May 28, 2022 7:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 417May 28, 2022 9:05 AM

R416 I watched the entire Korda-Alcaraz match yesterday. Korda didn't play bad at all. His serve is insane and he actually did manage to win quite a few difficult points. The second set was the closest one. Unfortubately he looked kinda tired in the third. He made several mistakes and at the same time Alcaraz improved and had luck on his side. Several balls ended up touching the top of the net then bounced on Korda's side. Of course those balls were impossible for Korda to return.

by Anonymousreply 418May 28, 2022 9:09 AM

Lol at the Norwegian commentator on Eurosport just now saying don't be surprised if the Fench crowd will cheer on double faults! Fucking hell. Is the French crowd the worst in the world?

Shaking my head at Eurosport deciding this women's match is the one to show. This is one of the worst matches I have ever seen. Granted, I don't watch much women's tennis because it fucking sucks. But if THIS is the quality of women's matches I am not missing out on much. Jeanjean is barely winning points. She got a bagel in the first set and looks like she might be bageled again in the second. Even the worst men's match is better to watch than this shit. On the men's side even the qualifiers are showing up and winning matches, meanwhile on the women's side the qualifiers are bageled🤦

R423 I've heard rumours from the tennis gays on Twitter that they are a bit more than friends, lol.

I can't believe Begu and Jeolian [WC] were playing for a forth round slot? and now Begu's QF spot is against Pegula or Zidansek? I've seen Henin commentating, honestly they should just give her a wildcard to the final against Iga. They'd sell more tickets.

by Anonymousreply 424May 28, 2022 11:17 AM

R424 I uh, was wondering that but had nothing to back it up with other than they seem a little emotionally co-dependent. Wouldn't be shocked but who knows.

by Anonymousreply 427May 28, 2022 12:09 PM

What xenophobic rubbish. Most of us judge players by what they do and say, not where they come from.

Medvedev: "Are there gays on the Tour? Well, if someone does not come out we will never know, at most this is something that a tennis player's best friend will know and only he knows what he is going through. I think every ATP initiative in defence of this is an excellent thing and can make every tennis player who is experiencing this feel safe."

Novak Djokovic offers help to Boris Becker in prison

After his comfortable third-round victory at the French Open, world No 1 Novak Djokovic took time to express concern for Boris Becker – his former coach and mentor – and to reveal that he has been in touch with Becker’s son Noah to offer assistance.

Becker spent three seasons working on Djokovic’s support staff, from 2014 to 2016. In that time, he helped transform his client’s reputation from a shaky closer-out of tournaments into a cold-eyed winner.

The two men have remained in close touch ever since, and Djokovic described himself as “heartbroken” when the news first broke of Becker’s two-and-a-half-year jail sentence for concealing assets.

On Friday night, the subject came up again after Djokovic’s routine 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Aljaz Bedene, the Slovenian who spent a couple of years playing under the British flag but has now reverted to his original nationality.

Asked about the Becker situation, Djokovic replied, “Even when we stopped working, our relationship kept going in a right way. I have been in touch with one of his sons, Noah, and asking if there is something that I could do.”

Although Djokovic is due in London next month to defend his Wimbledon title, he will probably not be able to visit Becker, who was recently moved from the Category B prison at Wandsworth in south London to a more relaxed environment in Huntercombe, Oxfordshire.

This is thought to be a sign that Becker will shortly be deported to Germany – an experience that Djokovic himself encountered in Australia four months ago, albeit in very different circumstances.

“It's terrible,” said Djokovic. “I'm just very sad that someone I know so well, and of course someone that is a legend of our sport, is going through what he's going through. It's been only less than a month. We know how long he has to be there. So I just hope that he will stay healthy and strong.”

Djokovic was in talkative mood on Friday after his frictionless progress into the second week of this tournament, where he is due to play Diego Schwartzman – the 15th seed from Argentina – on Sunday.

The match against Bedene was so incident-free that a variety of other subjects surfaced at his post-match press conference, including the presence of former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in the crowd. “It positively affected me,” Djokovic said. “I had even more motivation to perform.”

And then there was the prickly issue of Australia, the nation where Djokovic has won nine of his 20 major titles. In January, he had his Australian visa cancelled in a row over his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid. This automatically triggered a three-year ban from re-entering the country, although there are hopes that Anthony Albanese’s new Labor government could waive the penalty.

“In terms of the government, yes, I heard the news,” said Djokovic in relation to last weekend’s Australian election. “But I don't know anything about whether my visa is going to be reinstated or whether I'm going to be allowed to come back to Australia.

“I don't hold any grudges,” he added. “Look, you know, it was what it was. If I have an opportunity to go back to Australia and play a place where I made the biggest success in my career on grand slam, I would love to come back.”

Some inexplicable scheduling at Roland Garros on Friday meant that Djokovic and his old rival Rafael Nadal occupied very similar timeslots on the two main stadia, even though they are the tournament’s two biggest draw cards.

Nadal also swept past his third-round opponent, Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, in double-quick time to earn a crack at ninth seed Felix Auger Aliassime on Sunday.

This is an fascinating draw because Nadal’s uncle Toni has been coaching Auger Aliassime, a 21-year-old Canadian, for a little over a year. The two players haven’t faced off on a tennis court in that time, which gives an extra level of intrigue to their first encounter since 2019.

“I already talked with Toni after my match,” said Nadal after despatching van der Zandschulp by a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 scoreline. “I know you guys are gonna ask the question, but for me it's very simple. He's my uncle. I don't think he will be able to want me to lose, without a doubt, but he's a professional and he's with another player.

“I don't know what's gonna happen, if he's gonna stay in the box or not, but I don't care. I have zero problem with that. So it's not a story at all for me.”

by Anonymousreply 443May 28, 2022 2:21 PM

The French crowd proving DL's point: Alize Cornet retired on Phillip Chatrier against Zheng Qinwen and they booed her off the court (in what may be her last French Open ever). Yikes.

Zheng and Giorgi both producing amazing tennis and Iga struggled today with Kovinic. I think one of them could be licking their lips at an upset, perhaps Zheng who plays her in the next round.

by Anonymousreply 447May 28, 2022 3:29 PM

R417, the idea that Alcaraz is going coached during matches is absurd. Have you watched his coach during the match? I’ve never seen a more stoic coach. No hand gestures or facial movements that a closeup can capture let alone a player see from the court.

by Anonymousreply 458May 28, 2022 7:54 PM

Yikes... Ruud squeaked out a win... barely. How the fuck can he almost lose to a 30-something ranked Italian?! Seriously, Sonego didn't even play that well. Ruud was just shit. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy he won, but he needs to play A LOT better than this if he wants to reach the QF.

by Anonymousreply 459May 28, 2022 7:57 PM

R454 Nadal is a huge Real Madrid fan. I agree with you, maybe it's a bad idea to watch the final, especially because I think Liverpool will win.

by Anonymousreply 460May 28, 2022 7:59 PM

Ruud is not ready to win a slam at this point. He seemed to be peaking in Miami as hardcourts are clearly not his best surface but he's been quite inconsistent during the whole clay season.

He gets a ton of topspin on his shots which help on clay but his backhand is quite attackable

by Anonymousreply 461May 28, 2022 8:00 PM

he better not claim injury if he loses after going out the night before a match instead of resting

by Anonymousreply 462May 28, 2022 8:02 PM

R461 Did you see his netplay? Absolutely horrendous. It was cringy. Like... so so so bad. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 463May 28, 2022 8:03 PM

I need some slamless #1 on the men's tour à la WTA for some ranking drama.

Medvedev could have made it last year on a few occasions most notably had he reached the Roland Garros final and not winning it. This year Zverev would have become the new slamless no. 1 by winning both Rome and Madrid.

by Anonymousreply 464May 28, 2022 8:04 PM

it seems less likely to happen now with Alcaraz unless he chokes in a slam final. He seems like he's got the mentality to keep winning

Tsitsipas, Zverev, Rublev and Ruud all play a lot of tournaments so 1 of them could pull off the slamless #1 feat at some point

I'm sure Rios would love not to be the only one with that dubious distinction on the ATP side

by Anonymousreply 465May 28, 2022 8:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 468May 28, 2022 8:33 PM

I'm really interested in the Tsitsipas-Rune match on Monday. I think that could go the distance

by Anonymousreply 469May 28, 2022 8:39 PM

Gaston running out of Gas.

by Anonymousreply 470May 28, 2022 8:40 PM

This is the problem when players like Ymir and Gaston overachieve in the early rounds… it leaves us with uncompetitive matches mid-tournament.

by Anonymousreply 471May 28, 2022 9:10 PM

Totally agree, R471. Fun to see competitive matches and upsets early on in R1 and R2, but then R3 and R4 are often really flat. Then in the QFs, it picks up again. I was thinking about this very thing this morning, how often it seems to happen in Slams.

by Anonymousreply 472May 28, 2022 9:30 PM

[quote] nice clutch win today for Keys

I’ve never understood this jargonistic use of “clutch” in tennis. Could someone please explain?

TIA

by Anonymousreply 473May 28, 2022 10:38 PM

R473, clutch is coming through when the pressure is at its most intense.

Rafa, Novak and Fed are all considered clutch. While they make errors (like any other tennis player), they tend to NOT make errors at those crucial moments in a match when the match depends on coming through. Break points. A tough volley. In a tiebreak. They don't wilt.

It's why they all have 20 slams (at least) and other great players don't.

by Anonymousreply 474May 28, 2022 10:57 PM

Got it, thanks r474. I could never work out whether I was supposed to be concentrating on the semantics of clutch as in a car’s clutch, or the verb to clutch, as in grip and hold on to something. It’s actually closer to what they do in a clutch, i.e. a tight or critical situation. Thanks for helping to clear that up.

by Anonymousreply 475May 28, 2022 11:09 PM

I did watch the rest of today's matches on Peacock... SO that's the good news and it's NOT that expensive a month either... The bad news? i had to listen to john mcenroe and mary carillo yap, yap, yap and yap some more, because they haven't got the memo that 1) it's not about them anymore and 2) their opinions are just that opinions, not fact....

by Anonymousreply 476May 28, 2022 11:26 PM

Well it's really McEnroe, Mary doesn't say a heck of a lot anymore.

by Anonymousreply 477May 29, 2022 12:34 AM

I actually like Mac, R476.

Yes, he yaps. But I usually find him interesting. It's Chris Fowler and his arrogant asshole rants that drive me crazy when ESPN has coverage. At least Mac has earned his arrogance.

by Anonymousreply 478May 29, 2022 12:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 481May 29, 2022 1:36 AM

He really is the worst, isn't he R480? He talks over everyone. Totally plays favorites (he wants to have Fed's child). Never shuts up. So annoying.

(Of course, because I have major issues, I find him unnervingly attractive. I'd present hole in about five seconds. I love cockiness. Plus it might finally shut him up.)

by Anonymousreply 482May 29, 2022 1:48 AM

Has Tommy Paul gotten naked yet?

by Anonymousreply 484May 29, 2022 2:39 AM

AGREE, Fowler is the worst! Does ESPN pay him by word? I remember him a couple of years ago having the gall and audacity to try to argue about stroke production with Chris Evert live on air! WTF! WHAT A DOUCHEBAG! He's enough of one he should be on Fox "news"!...

AND he looks really really old for his age I might add! Like a decade older! wrinkles and crow's feet galore!

Mike Tirico is awful as well... constantly yapping as well and throwing out countless facts and info stats to fill up airtime because he knows diddly squat about tennis current or past....
