THEATRE GOSSIP #463 - The Some Like It Beanie Edition

At least the producers hope so. Four days until opening night...and reviews.

Meanwhile, yet another cross-dressing musical is on its way, this time a remake of an old one. Groundbreaking!

Dire, OP. At the very least you could have called it Some Like it Fat.

by Anonymousreply 2April 20, 2022 7:53 PM

Love the title OP!

by Anonymousreply 3April 20, 2022 8:00 PM

r601 in the last thread brought up Uzo Aduba. At the last Tony determination meeting it says Clyde's was discussed, but nothing about her specifically, so it looks like she'll be eligible in Featured Actress since her name's not above the title.

by Anonymousreply 5April 20, 2022 8:12 PM

Some Like it Fat would have worked for that, too, R5

by Anonymousreply 6April 20, 2022 8:14 PM

Danny, you’re going to get double-penetrated on camera, but you gotta keep that big dick in a jockstrap and hope that you can come hands-free. Dem’s the rules.

by Anonymousreply 7April 20, 2022 8:21 PM

Great title, OP.

by Anonymousreply 8April 20, 2022 8:24 PM

Fat Chance was better.

by Anonymousreply 9April 20, 2022 8:25 PM

From the previous thread-the reason Beanie can approximate a British accent is her girlfriend is a Brit. Imagine how proud she must be right now.

by Anonymousreply 10April 20, 2022 8:37 PM

Beanie IS Sugar.

by Anonymousreply 11April 20, 2022 8:41 PM

Wrong. Beanie is more like Equal.

by Anonymousreply 12April 20, 2022 8:42 PM

Not even close, R12.

by Anonymousreply 13April 20, 2022 8:51 PM

Some Cantrell to christen the thread...

Speaking of accents, for those who wondered about Keala Settle doing a Brit at the Oliviers, her dad is a Brit & her mom is New Zealand Māori.

by Anonymousreply 15April 20, 2022 8:58 PM

Anyone hear actually see Beanie in Funny Girl? Am dying for reviews

by Anonymousreply 16April 20, 2022 8:59 PM

Lana Cantrell isn’t very impressive. Who made the decision that she was going to be a DL theatre icon? I’d like to ask for a recount.

by Anonymousreply 17April 20, 2022 8:59 PM

R13-Sweet And Low?

by Anonymousreply 18April 20, 2022 9:02 PM

Did the poster who insisted Reichard "is not hung. He’s average." (428 in the previous thread.) ever return after the photo was posted? I'm genuinely curious if he didn't know what he was talking about or if he really thinks that's not hung/average...and if so, where are the men he's hanging out with?

by Anonymousreply 19April 20, 2022 9:15 PM

FG will be opening soon. How much money did MR. Hill play the critics to write complimentary words about Beanie. I’m sure the reviews will say…”her voice isn’t Barbra, but she’s funny and acts well”

I blame Michael Mayer for the shitshow I really do.

by Anonymousreply 20April 20, 2022 9:21 PM

Here's Beanie's wonderful Brit accent. SO MUCH TALENT!!

by Anonymousreply 21April 20, 2022 9:25 PM

Wait, Beanie is a lesbian? I did not know this.

by Anonymousreply 22April 20, 2022 9:26 PM

From the last thread:

[quote] What properties besides Phantom and Wild Party have two completely different musicals made from them? Not counting some that have been repurposed like Grand Hotel which recycled scores from an earlier version right?

Aida’s taken a couple of different forms on Broadway (Disney’s “Aida” and “My Darlin’ Aida”), but both of them reset the story in a different time, so I don’t know if that counts.

by Anonymousreply 23April 20, 2022 9:29 PM

What kind of a hill of beans is Beanie?

by Anonymousreply 24April 20, 2022 9:30 PM

It’s going to be sad that Beanie will be Tony nominated because of poor competition when Elena Rodger, who similarly couldn’t sing the score well, was snubbed because of fierce competition.

by Anonymousreply 25April 20, 2022 9:50 PM

I don't think I've ever seen DL so eager for something to get bad reviews.

by Anonymousreply 26April 20, 2022 9:52 PM

Should they just give the Best Featured Actress Tony to Patti already? Or will Jane Lynch beat her to it

by Anonymousreply 27April 20, 2022 9:52 PM

R15, that’s still no excuse for Keala Settle’s accent at the Olivier Awards. She was born and raised in Hawaii. She’s lived in NYC for several years. She’s an American.

by Anonymousreply 28April 20, 2022 9:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 33April 20, 2022 10:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 34April 20, 2022 10:11 PM

Ohmygawd.

I just came from a matineé of "All My Girls", and as feared (I'd already read it), it is a beyond cringeworthy show. It's so difficult to pinpoint what is exactly wrong without hundreds of pins to point, but the writing is incredibly terrible. To save time they just should have called it "White/Bad". Even at this late date all of the gays are swishy, boozy, "Oh, Miss Gurl!" writer's creations and the woke speechifying is as appalling as it is deadly dull.

It's the longest 95 minutes in town!

If you aren't completely mortified to be gay already...you will be!

by Anonymousreply 35April 20, 2022 10:31 PM

There was a rumor that Michael Mayer strongly considered taking away "The Music That Makes Me Dance" from Beanie and giving it to Ramin. With the appropriate pronoun changes, natch.

by Anonymousreply 39April 20, 2022 11:25 PM

Would find that very hard to believe, but if it's true, it would only serve to underline BF's failings. And to totally screw with her confidence.

by Anonymousreply 40April 20, 2022 11:27 PM

If they really wanted to sell tickets they would have given Music that Makes Me Dance with original pronouns and have a subplot about Nicky in prison

by Anonymousreply 41April 20, 2022 11:32 PM

[qupte] What properties besides Phantom and Wild Party have two completely different musicals made from them? Not counting some that have been repurposed like Grand Hotel which recycled scores from an earlier version right?

"A Tale of Two Cities" had two full-scale musicalizations, both flops. The 1969 London show was called "Two Cities." The 2008 Broadway version got the full title, "A Tale of Two Cities." Both were recorded.

by Anonymousreply 42April 20, 2022 11:36 PM

Cyrano de Bergerac had the Broadway musical starring Christopher Plummer in 1972 and the recent off-Broadway musical and then film adaptation with Peter Dinklage. And I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't other musical versions over the years.

There have certainly been many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories on stage including the musical Baker Street and the plays The Crucifer of Blood and Baskerville.

Look for other royalty-free properties for more titles.

by Anonymousreply 43April 20, 2022 11:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 80April 21, 2022 11:57 AM

How do we think Matthew Lopez will “reimagine” Some Like It Hot? Will it now be five hours long and dripping with self-importance?

by Anonymousreply 83April 21, 2022 12:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 85April 21, 2022 12:45 PM

The Beanie criticism on the chat boards has really been ratcheted up in the final week of previews as all the theater queens are now in attendance.

by Anonymousreply 86April 21, 2022 12:49 PM

R86, what are some of the comments?

by Anonymousreply 87April 21, 2022 12:51 PM

I assumed Lopez would have given up writing at this point, seeing as how twisted his arms must be from all that patting himself on the back.

by Anonymousreply 88April 21, 2022 12:54 PM

The Inheritance is quite a poor play

by Anonymousreply 89April 21, 2022 12:56 PM

It had potential, R89, but it needed an editor. Daldry should have pushed to cut the bloat.

by Anonymousreply 90April 21, 2022 1:04 PM

[R44]: “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” has been musicalized several times. I have one tepid score on CD. And I even saw a different version at a theater near Burbank in the early 2000’s, starring James Barbour as the Captain, but the chief drawback was that it was adapted from the original novel, not the 1947 screenplay. Checking on Google, I found 2 more versions, one done in Glendale in 2019, also derived from the novel, and yet another one, announcing a “pre-Broadway” production.

“Cyrano” has also had a number of musical versions over the years, some existing only as independent CD recordings. It and “Hunchback of Notre Dame” seem to compete for the record number of most unproduced scores. I’ve heard several versions of each, and their music is just forgettable. (Not to mention the notorious “Quasimodo” by Lionel Bart, which was finally performed in 2013 in London.)

Another example of 2 shows from one source is “Pajama Game,” based on “7 1/2 Cents,” and “Say, Darling,” about the making of it.

by Anonymousreply 91April 21, 2022 1:08 PM

Isn’t Matthew Lopez working with Christopher Castellani (of “Who is the Bad Art Friend?” fame) on adapting Castellani’s book, LEADING MEN, for film? Or did he wisely bow out of that mess?

by Anonymousreply 92April 21, 2022 1:22 PM

r85 God knows Drag Race is working hard to disabuse them of that notion.

by Anonymousreply 93April 21, 2022 1:41 PM

R91, if you're not contributing to Forgotten Musicals on Facebook, you should be. Your post above was really interesting.

by Anonymousreply 94April 21, 2022 2:06 PM

[quote]What properties besides Phantom and Wild Party have two completely different musicals made from them? Not counting some that have been repurposed like Grand Hotel which recycled scores from an earlier version right?

There was Marcelle Maurette's 1952 play ANASTASIA (inspired by the story of Anna Anderson) which opened on Broadway in 1954.

That play was adapted into the Oscar-winning 1956 film starring Ingrid Bergman, Yul Brynner, and Helen Hayes.

In 1965, the same play was adapted into a Broadway musical ANYA, which bombed big time. Over the next thirty years, the musical was reworked several times under new titles: A SONG FOR ANASTASIA (1967), THE ANASTASIA GAME (1989-1990), THE ANASTASIA AFFAIRE (1992), and ANASTASIA: THE MUSICAL (1998).

In 1997, the original Maurette play was once again adapted for the big screen as an animated musical by Don Bluth, which was then turned into another Broadway musical in 2017. This versions didn't do well, either, and closed after two years.

by Anonymousreply 95April 21, 2022 2:07 PM

thanks for all that, R95.

The 1997 film (starring Meg Ryan, Angela Lansbury, and John Cusack!) had songs by Ahrens and Flaherty. I never saw the stage version, but the movie is pretty bad, as I recall.

by Anonymousreply 96April 21, 2022 2:23 PM

Lopez was not working WITH Castellani in any way. He was adapting the book without any collaboration with the author.

by Anonymousreply 97April 21, 2022 2:31 PM

[ByJupiter]: Thanks. I’ll check it out. I’ve been seeing Broadway musicals for over 50 years, and always enjoy finding new ones.

I have a ticket to see “Knoxville” at the Asolo in Sarasota, and I may even trek to La Jolla to see “Lempicka” this summer.

But my favorite show unreleased on CD remains Skip Kennon’s lovely score for “Time and Again,” which I actually saw at the Old Globe in San Diego in 1996.

by Anonymousreply 114April 21, 2022 5:35 PM

People REALLY need to stop conflating drag (essentially a burlesque tradition) and trans. They have little to nothing to do with one another. One's a comedic theatrical device, meant to be superficial. One's a matter of personal identity, which is anything but. But they can and SHOULD be able to exist in the same realm without the former being labelled transphobic. But as they say, 'nuance' is the new N word... SMH.

I've also seen the ridiculous argument that straight men in drag are *appropriating* gay culture. NO. Drag / men dressing up in women's clothing (and vice-versa) was around LONG before RuPaul, drag brunches and Stonewall. Culture is shared, people. Or at least it used to be before the woke mob decided culture was some form of intellectual property.

There has been a workshop production that was well received with positive response - that's why the Shuberts are doing it and booking in their premier theater. I have nothing to do with the production, but friends I trust have seen the workshop production. That's my source.

I don't think that's out of the realm of possibility. To do the show "as the movie" would just come off as old-fashioned. Sugar only ran for 505 performances in 1972-73.

by Anonymousreply 128April 21, 2022 9:56 PM

[quote]according to the new artwork, Some Like It Hot has no cross dressing or trans or anything like that.

Sweetie, Curtis and Lemmon weren't in drag the ENTIRE film.

by Anonymousreply 129April 21, 2022 10:10 PM

No one is interested in Some Like it Hot. I don't care what some PR wag leaked out of the workshop.

by Anonymousreply 130April 21, 2022 10:13 PM

I wish I were clever enough to link the poster art work for this new Some Like It Hot but if I could, you'd under stand why some might think they've upped the period to the 1950s. Google it!

by Anonymousreply 131April 21, 2022 11:02 PM

It was linked at R111

by Anonymousreply 132April 21, 2022 11:04 PM

If I had a penny for every WOW! I heard coming out of a Broadway workshop I'd be richer than Jeffrey Seller.

by Anonymousreply 133April 21, 2022 11:05 PM

Oy. Thanks, r132.

How did I miss that? I said I wasn't very clever Anyway, you can see the confusion of historical periods right there.

by Anonymousreply 134April 21, 2022 11:07 PM

Oh, it's okay, R134. Easily missed. I didn't mean it snarkily. : )

by Anonymousreply 135April 21, 2022 11:08 PM

I don't love the artwork but it definitely isn't 50s. Very faux art deco.

One of the announcements about Some Like it Hot mentions that it will still take place in the late 1920s.

by Anonymousreply 140April 22, 2022 12:05 AM

So Some Like It Hot will be Bridgertoned? It will be set in an alternate universe in which white men can openly lust after and pursue a romantic relationship with a Black woman? OK.

by Anonymousreply 141April 22, 2022 12:43 AM

Back in the 1920s in the US? Sorry, forgot to include the most important bit.

by Anonymousreply 142April 22, 2022 12:44 AM

R142, Will Fanny Brice make an appearance?

by Anonymousreply 143April 22, 2022 1:27 AM

[quote]So Some Like It Hot will be Bridgertoned? It will be set in an alternate universe in which white men can openly lust after and pursue a romantic relationship with a Black woman? OK.

So shocking that a Broadway musical based on a famous movie farce isn't a social documentary!

by Anonymousreply 144April 22, 2022 1:40 AM

R144 Please! That counter-argument is getting stale. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 145April 22, 2022 1:43 AM

But people expressing shock and outrage over non-traditional casting isn't stale at all, R145.

by Anonymousreply 146April 22, 2022 1:45 AM

" Non-traditional" = bringing in minorities ( especially one) just to do seem diverse, with no regard to the integrity of the work.

by Anonymousreply 147April 22, 2022 1:51 AM

Multiple reports that Company had a longer than usual intermission tonight, after which it was announced Patti wouldn't be returning and her understudy was taking over for Act 2. Apparently a non-Covid illness. I hope she's okay (especially on her birthday!)

by Anonymousreply 148April 22, 2022 2:05 AM

Why is there no dish on Mr Saturday night?

by Anonymousreply 149April 22, 2022 2:09 AM

Based on the grosses, it may just be because there's no interest.

by Anonymousreply 150April 22, 2022 2:15 AM

The only audiences interested in MR SATURDAY NIGHT are straight and over 80 years of age. Not quite DL's profile.

And what about those awful wigs on Billy Crystal? Onstage and in real life.

by Anonymousreply 151April 22, 2022 2:20 AM

OMG is Patti’s toilet going to make another tweet?

by Anonymousreply 154April 22, 2022 2:35 AM

Michelle Collins discussed Funny Girl on her podcast. Her friend who was with her said he couldn’t believe how bad the show is in general (regardless of casting), but they both said Beanie was just totally out of her depth. That it was like being forced to watch a kid perform and to have to tell them how good they are. I don’t see how any of the reviews will be any kinder.

by Anonymousreply 155April 22, 2022 2:38 AM

Michelle Collins is very funny on air but a complete sociopath in real life.

You need Sirius for her radio show.

by Anonymousreply 163April 22, 2022 3:11 AM

Michelle’s podcast is separate from her Sirius show. It’s called Midnight Snack. The Funny Girl stuff is from this week’s episode.

by Anonymousreply 164April 22, 2022 3:13 AM

I saw POTUS at its second preview performance.

I thought it was very funny.

How can you not like a show which has its very first word be “cunt”?

by Anonymousreply 165April 22, 2022 4:02 AM

I saw Funny Girl this evening. One of the worst revivals ever mounted. The Bean is fat, ugly, costumed horribly, unfunny, shrill, vulgar and sings like a fourth-tier junior college student. But the production around her is equally awful—direction, sets (hideous), lights, choreography, the works. And what a *brilliant* idea to shoehorn in cut numbers and songs from the movie into the already deadly second act, making it even more of a slog.

Our panties are all twisted up over a potential Tony snub for Beanie - but what about Hugh? What's the lineup and could he actually be snubbed? After all he's done for the Broadway? Is there enough competition?

by Anonymousreply 179April 22, 2022 11:54 AM

it's also not a great year for leading men, is it? Just Strange Loop guy, Ramin, McClure, Myles, Billy Crystal and Hugh?

by Anonymousreply 182April 22, 2022 12:12 PM

If McClure wins, it's another Tony for a man in a dress. Just don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 183April 22, 2022 12:38 PM

[quote] If McClure wins, it's another Tony for a man in a dress. Just don't get it.

Not really r183, or only in the broadest sense. He works like a dog switching costumes, being funny (way more than Santino in Tootsie), leading the show (way more than Santino in Tootsie), and having a range of emotions to tackle (way more than Santino in Tootsie). I didn't like the show, but it's a bravura performance. Nonetheless, I think Myles will win - which I find more depressing. The kid is a really really good Michael Jackson impersonator who performs a very long set.

by Anonymousreply 184April 22, 2022 12:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 186April 22, 2022 12:54 PM

Wow, I saw Company with Nikki Renee Daniels on as Bobbie and absolutely loved the show. But Lenk’s performance in the above clip does nothing for me. In fact, I’m nervous that her voice is going to give out. She almost sounds like she’s fighting a cold.

by Anonymousreply 187April 22, 2022 12:58 PM

Seems like Kissinger enjoyed Saturday in the Park with George

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 201April 22, 2022 2:44 PM

After seeing A Strange Loop last night, I think Spivey will be the one to beat for Best Actor. I can't see Hugh winning for that underwhelming performance. Spivey works for it. I was also surprised by Antwayn Hopper in ASL, especially after his dreadful performance in The Life at Encores. So we can really blame Billy Porter for everything in that debacle, including the performances. Hopper is terrific in ASL, and obviously working with a much better director. Having said that, I can honestly predict ASL won't win Best Musical. It's not all that. There's a lot to admire, but in the move to Broadway, the creators have Increased the volume to the point where the lyrics are unintelligible and every aspect of the show has been turned up several notches. The audience last night was screaming appreciatively and often, but I found the whole evening exhausting, which I didn't feel at Playwrights Horizons. I don't know who producers think will be the sustaining audience for this show, but I wish it well. Anything to keep J. Hudson from an EGOT.

Six will probably end up being this year's Best Musical.

by Anonymousreply 202April 22, 2022 2:47 PM

R202 yes I found the volume to be an issue too. I knew the score from the off-Broadway cast recording (MARY!) and I couldn't hear a lot of it because the music was so loud over the vocals. What is that about?

Spivey was adorable though. Would be great if he won.

by Anonymousreply 203April 22, 2022 2:51 PM

Well, who knows what George got up to in the park on Saturday, R201?

I know I enjoyed the Phantom of the Ballet.

by Anonymousreply 204April 22, 2022 2:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 209April 22, 2022 3:27 PM

Is this the absolute worst year for outstanding Broadway performances, or is it the dearth of good material?

by Anonymousreply 210April 22, 2022 3:33 PM

[R158]: No idea about rights availability to novel of “Ghost and Mrs. Muir.”

The musicalized version I saw in Burbank was clearly based on the novel, not the screenplay, because it included Mrs. Muir’s son, who grows up to become a prissy, disapproving clergyman. Meanwhile, Act II opened with a sassy music hall number, sung by her blowsy, grown daughter. These two totally upended the story line. Maybe if the music had been memorable, it might have worked. Sadly, it wasn’t.

The hallmark of bad theater isn’t disgust; it’s boredom.

Now you know how I felt watching “Legs Diamond.”

Beanie will be nominated but Lead Actress in a musical will be Clarke or Sutton will win. I’d actually be happy with Clarke. I enjoyed her more than Tonya, or it could be I’m just not a fan of the person Tonya has become. It shouldn’t affect awards…but it does.

Lead actress in a play is Mary Louise Parker.

Lead actor musical will be Hugh. Sorry queens, he’s terrible in the role but Broadway loves him.

Featured Actress in a musical will hopefully be LuPone.

by Anonymousreply 225April 22, 2022 5:03 PM

And yet, Mayer still gets more shows to direct. Two musicals already on his schedule for next season.

by Anonymousreply 226April 22, 2022 5:07 PM

I can’t help but think that the FG producers are hiring trolls to post raves on social media

by Anonymousreply 227April 22, 2022 5:11 PM

Sutton really improved when I watched her "Anything Goes" from London; her acting as a "broad" was much more convincing this time around. My nephew was thrilled to have seen Stephanie J. Block go on has her understudy in NY, and I probably would have been too, if I had the chance to see her in the role. But Sutton definitely improved her characterization. Robert Lindsay was really overdoing it though as Moonface -- preferred Joel Grey in NY.

I know she's eligible, but MLP winning Best Actress/Play for a role she originated 25 years ago just seems stupid, especially if the play is deemed a "revival".

by Anonymousreply 268April 22, 2022 11:18 PM

If she didn't do it on Broadway, wasn't rewarded for it, and is giving a great performance, let her at it!

by Anonymousreply 269April 22, 2022 11:23 PM

[quote] If she didn't do it on Broadway, wasn't rewarded for it, and is giving a great performance, let her at it!

I totally understand that, but it also plays into the "if it wasn't on Broadway, it doesn't count" mentality. She just won the bloody Tony last year, it's not like she doesn't have one.

by Anonymousreply 270April 22, 2022 11:29 PM

[quote] I totally understand that, but it also plays into the "if it wasn't on Broadway, it doesn't count" mentality.

That’s not exactly a hidden agenda. The Tony’s entire purpose is to define “theater” as “Broadway”

by Anonymousreply 271April 22, 2022 11:43 PM

Kristin Chenoweth was dazzling in the pretty good On The 20th Century revival… a shame it was a very tough season because she definitely should have won a Tony for it. Ditto Andy Karl, who was sensational.

by Anonymousreply 272April 22, 2022 11:43 PM

What about all those actresses in POTUS? No noms for them? Vanessa Williams? Julie White? Lea de Laria?? Julianne Hough???? Where do they rank?

by Anonymousreply 273April 22, 2022 11:50 PM

Also, the 2015 Tony Awards once again presented category fraud since Christian Borle certainly should have been Lead Actor not Featured for Something Rotten! (which he would have also won), leaving room for Andy Karl or Max Von Essen, both of whom were excellent in their respective shows. Kelli was due so it was Chenoweth’s to lose (also acting as co-host of the ceremony with Alan Cumming), though had The Fucking Visit been anything but a boring slog it would likely have been a sentimental win for Chita.

by Anonymousreply 274April 22, 2022 11:50 PM

What is the deal with Patti LuPone? Surely one of you queens know what’s going on. Is it the C word?

by Anonymousreply 275April 22, 2022 11:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 277April 23, 2022 12:08 AM

Did anyone see Max opposite (cancelled?) Alice Ripley in The Baker’s Wife at Paper Mill? There’s a decent bootleg and copious clips, seemed like a decent production - needless to say, Max nailed (?) “Proud Lady” and ditto Alice with “Meadowlark”.

by Anonymousreply 278April 23, 2022 12:46 AM

Yes, r274, it is the C word.

Cunt.

That’s always the C word where Patti is concerned.

[quote] It baffled me that she has two Tonys

Well, maybe the exact two Tonys she has baffles you, but Sutton absolutely deserves to have two Tonys. She deserved one for The Drowsy Chaperone and (arguably) for Violet. So if you toss the one she didn't deserve for Anything Goes, there are definitely replacements.

What baffles me is that Audra has six. Or that Lansbury has five. Or that Danny Burstein has fifty million nominations. It's a tiny community. This kind of thing happens, as inexplicable as it is.

My Horrors! OMG! Beanie is giving one of the most reaching, pleading, exhausting and HORRIFIC performances in ages, it’s beyond “not right for the role” it is aggressively wrong. She has NO chemistry with Ramin, it’s actually unpleasant to watch them together, and he seems it realize it, a careful performance from him, he’s usually electric. Beanie isn’t singing the score, she is basically yelling the words until the various big finishes and then she pushes her head up and back and cries out the last note. This is a performance that is absolutely being allowed because someone close to her is paying for this show. It is worse than any high school effort, truly, TRULY. There were screaming teen girls up front, but the theater gang I saw were in shock, nobody dare post on social media, the press reps looked ill in the back of the house. Yet, as bad as Beanie is, it’s Jane Lynch who was my worst of the worst. Charmless, mugging, hammy and again, not an ounce of chemistry with Beanie, none. Beanie is oddly disconnected through the whole show, it’s as if she trying to remember everything, it’s kind of unsettling. Her manic dancing has no skill, just force, rehearsed to numbness. A tragedy of the stage. This show deserves to be slaughtered, but they’ll probably try and save her, and it. Really bad. BAD.

by Anonymousreply 285April 23, 2022 3:22 AM

I just endured Macbeth. What a dreadful evening. Ruth Negga is absolutely awful, a high school performance. WTF???? And one of the worst professional productions I have seen. Mr. Craig still has a very nice ass but....awful, awful, awful

This year’s Tony Award nominations will be delayed by nearly a week, administrators of the awards said Friday, because enough actors have been out with coronavirus cases that it has become difficult for awards nominators to see all the eligible performances. The Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, who present the awards, said nominations would now be announced on May 9, instead of May 3. The awards ceremony itself will remain, as scheduled, on June 12.

The change reflects the extraordinary disruption the coronavirus pandemic has caused to this theater season. Multiple shows — on Broadway, Off Broadway, around the country, and in Britain, Canada and elsewhere — have been forced to cancel performances and shift schedules because of coronavirus cases.

On Broadway several shows have been scrambling to open before the eligibility deadline, which was scheduled to be April 28, but will now be May 4. Four shows — “Paradise Square,” “Macbeth,” “Plaza Suite” and “A Strange Loop” — canceled multiple performances because of coronavirus cases. (Among those testing positive were the “Macbeth” star Daniel Craig and the “Plaza Suite” stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.)

Even now, when all shows are running, some actors are still out. That has made it hard for the nominators to see all the eligible shows with all eligible performers onstage. There are six shows scheduled to open next week, including “Funny Girl,” “The Skin of Our Teeth,” “A Strange Loop,” “POTUS,” “Mr. Saturday Night” and “Macbeth.”

by Anonymousreply 308April 23, 2022 5:29 AM

Awarding the Tonys this year should just be based on attendance.

by Anonymousreply 309April 23, 2022 5:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 311April 23, 2022 7:31 AM

Hugh might win cause he is helping Broadway survive during Covid, but the guy from A Strange Loop deserves it and will likely win it. Hugh is mostly mediocre in the show, energetic and smiley, but at times he's just sorta bad. Without question he will be nominated. As will Billy Crystal.

Six is definitely winning Best Musical over ASL. A lot of those Tony voters are gonna be horrified by parts of ASL.

Why is Paradise Square staying open? To get Tony nominations?

by Anonymousreply 312April 23, 2022 8:42 AM

Someone in the last thread suggested Strange Loop might win Best Book and Best Score and Six would win Best Musical and I suspect that's how it's gonna shake out. Everybody loves a winner.

by Anonymousreply 315April 23, 2022 11:26 AM

So I know this was a horrible flop but I’m kinda obsessed with this song lately , “Stop Time” by Barbara Walsh.

I couldn’t believe the show got a lot of Tony nominations but nothing for Barbara. To me, it’s the only good song in the score.

by Anonymousreply 318April 23, 2022 11:40 AM

Does anyone remember who played the ANYTHING GOES Actors Fund benefit? Sutton was sick, though she had managed to do the matinee but barely and finally had to bow out that evening. I swear I saw Rachel York do it, but why she would have I don't know.

by Anonymousreply 319April 23, 2022 11:53 AM

R316 it’s a wonderful song. There’s another beautiful song in the show sung by the lead male called something like “I Want to Go Home.” But boy, was that show ever an overblown mess. The Forbidden Broadway parody nailed it.

by Anonymousreply 320April 23, 2022 11:58 AM

[quote] I couldn’t believe the show got a lot of Tony nominations but nothing for Barbara. To me, it’s the only good song in the score.

Big WAS Daniel Jenkins, period. Whatever artistic successes the show had were aided mightily by his performance. That he didn't get a Tony nomination was one of the most shocking omissions in the past 30-some years. Add to that Christa Moore getting a nomination for Leading actress when her role was clearly featured and she had very little to (and nothing warranting an award- not her fault), and it almost felt like a slap in the face to Jenkins, who is by all accounts, one of the loveliest human beings working in theater.

Best actor was a crowded field that season, but they could have easily put Savion Glover in featured, since it was an ensemble, and worse cases of category fraud are perpetrated every season.

It's understandable why Walsh wasn't nominated. She was good, but not memorable, and her role simply wasn't large enough or dynamic enough to make her chosen over the strong competition that season.

by Anonymousreply 321April 23, 2022 12:24 PM

It looks they are allowing at least some Beanie criticism on Broadway Remembered: “ Beanie had no power in the music. I had high hopes but she couldn’t get me up the mountain let alone over it. Not all that believable as Fanny. No real chemistry between her and Nick. Sad but true. The last act is pretty dull and way too slow!”

“ Really went in wanting to like it but 15 minutes in and Ms. Feldstein lost me. I have enjoyed her movie appearances and I liked her in Hello Dolly! but this role is not for her. I found both her vocals and acting weak. Not making any comparisons to Streisand,as I have seen other actresses make the role their own but In my opinion, Ms. Feldstein failed to do that. Too often she looked lost and like a little girl playing dress up in the costumes they put her in. As I said, I’m not comparing her to anyone but this role needs an actress/singer with power to deliver. Think they would have been better off casting an unknown or lesser known Broadway talent in the role.”

As I remember, URINETOWN was deemed by many the best of that year, but ultimately voters thought it objectionable to have it stand alongside South Pacific, My Fair Lady, etc. as exemplars of Broadway. Instead, the award went to the wildly mediocre Thoroughly Modern Millie. Could the same fate await Strange Loop—too explicit, too sexual, too edgy—for most voters? Pulitzer notwithstanding. Of course, it may lose votes because it's crap (I haven't seen it).

by Anonymousreply 328April 23, 2022 1:06 PM

R329 ASL has a lot of lyrics throughout the show about getting fucked and sucking dick - there is also a scene where he goes to the doctor who sings about whether or not he’s getting penetrated.

And then the scene where he takes off his pants and gets on his hands and knees and proceeds to get fucked by some old daddy.

by Anonymousreply 345April 23, 2022 2:38 PM

If that blind item at R327 is meant to be about Beanie, then it's sloppily written. First of all, FUNNY GIRL hasn't officially opened yet (as of this writing). And the remark that "Vocally, they just can't keep up with their other cast members" would be an odd thing to say about the lead in any production of FUNNY GIRL, because none of the other cast members has any major singing to do, except maybe a couple of brief moments for Eddie Ryan.

All he has is his unchallenging vocal parts in the two duets, "I Want to be Seen With You" and "You are Woman, I am Man," plus a very brief reprise of a few lines of "Don't Rain on My Parade." But I do understand they have added some singing for Ramin, so maybe there's now enough for him to display how good his voice is.

by Anonymousreply 373April 23, 2022 6:38 PM

[quote]would argue that isn't really true of Nick Arnstein in the original FUNNY GIRL.

I wasn’t talking about the original, I was talking about this revival, which is why I specified the two current actors. Nick had more “power singing” in this version, not much, but enough to show off genuine legit vocal chops.

by Anonymousreply 374April 23, 2022 6:56 PM

A Strange Loop is a gazillion times better than that crapfest Slave Play, so similarities between the two should be kept to a minimum. And unlike Slave Play, A Strange Loop is going to win at least one Tony Award.

It is a bit depressing to think that Six will win Best Musical, isn't it?

The play categories are going to be so much more competitive and interesting than the musical ones.

by Anonymousreply 375April 23, 2022 7:06 PM

The NYT will give Nepotism Beanie’s Funny Girl debacle the same treatment they gave Ben Platt’s Evan Hansen’s movie disaster. They are the only major publication that downplayed that massive pile up. They are nothing if not predictable. And Jesse Green has a family to support.

by Anonymousreply 376April 23, 2022 7:07 PM

What family does Jesse have to support?

And the NYT had been giving DEH so much copy since the play opened that they were just trying to save face by not trashing the movie on the same level as everyone else.

If anyone cares at this point, that is definitely Helen Gallagher's voice mis-identified as Dolores Gray upthread. I'd recognize her voice anywhere, especially in her hilarious introductory patter.

by Anonymousreply 379April 23, 2022 7:34 PM

Well, that would explain how Beanie is able to take shows off a week after opening, if her family & friends are backing it.

I remember him when he first came on the scene/-absolutely gorgeous, with a great singing voice and presence. And then nothing. He hasn’t become any sort of star.

I saw him talking with some guys on the street last fall. Older, of course, but still beautiful. Sadly, he’s remained a chorus boy

by Anonymousreply 384April 23, 2022 7:45 PM

The STRANGE LOOP producers (and critics) are going to try to guilt the voters into believing its the best musical, but the voters won't fall for it. SL is, at best, an interesting experimental musical, but its dramaturgy is stillborn and it's story just navel-gazing. The score is good, not great. Just because they're talking about bold new ideas (meth, grinder, rape, Tyler Perry) don't make the show good. It's just bold. Reminds me of all the ridiculous false hype around Stew and PASSING STRANGE (the same BS was tried for TITLE OF SHOW." About 20 minutes into SL, I got everything it was offering me, and I wanted out. I didn't need another musical about a tortured soul writing a musical. Been there, done that, at way too many NAMT festivals. It will be gone by Labor Day. No one wants a rape musical.

by Anonymousreply 401April 23, 2022 9:36 PM

I was just in the Saturday matinee of ‘Funny Girl’ and I do want to not like her but Beanie was good enough. The story is about a woman who was sold to audiences as ‘funny’ and Beanie played her as a vaudevillian comedienne so it worked in that regard, and some of her vocals were strong. I liked how she hugged Jane during the curtain call too. It showed that the talk of them hating each other is probably not that true. She will get nominated and it wasn’t bad. Maybe I am someone who wants the underdog to succeed but she did suffice. She shone the most in the second act with the bagels. Let’s be nicer and let them tell their story in their way. She isn’t Barbra okay let her recreate the role. It was okay.

by Anonymousreply 410April 23, 2022 10:37 PM

R402, OY! That’s exactly the kind of absurdity I’m seeing on various theater sites, social media, BE BEST BEANIE! Why is it so hard to admit she’s not up to the role, which is a fact? This, “Oh give her a break, she’s trying, she’s sweet in the show”, HUH?! This entire production is the Broadway equivalent of being forced to watch your boss’s child sing a song after a holiday dinner party. Beanie and Jane have ZERO chemistry, and that “hug” is done exactly the same every curtain call. I agree the various press outlets will be gentle with her, but the truth is that she is a professional actress who has desperately wanted this role since childhood, the resources were abundantly available, and here she is world! Beanie, and Ben Platt are VERY similar in both their familiar hierarchy and their presenting an “awe shucks” demeanor while silently having obsessive entitlement impulses that know no limits. The show is stillborn with her in the lead.

by Anonymousreply 411April 23, 2022 10:38 PM

Did Jane try to Betty Lynn Beanie with some unrequested performance critiques?

by Anonymousreply 412April 23, 2022 10:41 PM

Someone with family and friend financing a show, making it unnecessary for her to even have to audition for the part, is not an underdog.

by Anonymousreply 413April 23, 2022 10:43 PM

R411, that's what you get from a generation that has been told that everything they do is excellent and that the effort is is all that matters. Also, it is a reflection on the people who told them that. It is also what you get from a theater crowd that is used to giving everything a standing ovation. Why do you think that the great Broadway artists have disappeared and, in their place, we are subjected to mediocrity on every level?

by Anonymousreply 414April 23, 2022 10:46 PM

I am r402 just see it

by Anonymousreply 416April 23, 2022 10:48 PM

Moss Hart was almost ready to fire Julie Andrews from "My Fair Lady"; in her case, she wasn't having problems singing the score, but with acting a Shaw role with no previous experience in that kind of acting. A weekend with Moss of intense coaching worked wonders with Julie, enough to placate Rex Harrison, who was being more of a bitch than usual. Maybe someone thought a vocal coach or teacher could do the same thing with Beanie? Results haven't been that encouraging unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 417April 23, 2022 10:54 PM

R411 AMEN.

by Anonymousreply 418April 23, 2022 10:55 PM

R432 Is she? She certainly wasn't any of those things in Impeachment.

She's a character actress. She needs to be playing supporting roles as kooky friends/neighbors/relatives. In a film, she should be in 2 or 3 scenes, tops.

There's nothing WRONG with being a character actor. Contemporary film/tv have somehow made it shameful to be the very talented person who is a little too old/young/fat/odd looking to be an injenue or lead. Everyone wants to be thin, pretty, young even if they're not any of those things.

by Anonymousreply 487April 24, 2022 3:06 PM

You can’t underestimate what a leg up it gives you to have (wealthy) parents who work in the entertainment industry, a brother who is already a movie star, and a best friend whose dad is a major Broadway and film producer. For a young performer, that access is everything. It’s not just part of Beanie’s (or Ben Platt’s) success story — it’s the whole story.

by Anonymousreply 488April 24, 2022 3:46 PM

[quoote]Isn’t she also going to be in the Merrily We Roll Along film version?

I will be blissfully long dead.

by Anonymousreply 489April 24, 2022 3:47 PM

Funny Girl will probably be a disaster but after a few years it'll be referred to in her press clippings as "Beanie TRIUMPHED on Broadway in the 1st ever revival of Funny Girl..." just like after the film Booksmart disappointed and disappeared w/o a trace and people now refer to her as having a film career.

Her and Platt, yes, along with Blake Jenner. Nepotism meets domestic violence.

Who is going to tell the director of A Strange Loop the sound design is horrific? I was in the 7th row, and couldn't make out the lyrics. These boneheads are sabotaging the actors working so hard up there. I understood every word at Playwrights. The sound designer did the same thing to Be More Chill when it moved. And we saw what happened there.

The sound is killing the show and it's exhausting. The actors deserve better.

Had the same trouble, R498. Where I was sitting, I had to strain to hear the lyrics over the volume of the band.

The best post in this thread. What a slap in the face to talented performers with no connections to see someone like Beanie get this role. You know it’s REALLY bad when her performance is actually working to garner sympathy and an active comeback campaign for Lea Michele. Regardless of whether or not she’s a nice person, Beanie should not be able to get away with buying herself a role that she is 100 percent not qualified for.

People like Beanie and Ben Platt are destroying any good will left in this industry. Why even try when these kids can buy their success? Platt, by the way, is a completely odious person with a MASSIVE sense of entitlement who is desperate for fame and believes he has a future Oscar in the bag because of the Linklater Merrily film. He is the male Lea Michele in every sense except for the fact that at least Lea got into the industry on merit.

Nepotism in show business has been around since time immemorial.

Countless sons and daughters of established stars used their family connections to enter the profession.

Others, like David O. Selznick, used marital connections to advance.

It's the ones who came from nothing, like Streisand, who truly made it on their own.

by Anonymousreply 513April 24, 2022 8:06 PM

Do you think Beano is at the theatre yet? What is curtain time tonight? When is her call?

by Anonymousreply 515April 24, 2022 8:19 PM

I actually thought Beanie was fine in The Humans. The movie itself was bullshit, but so was the play. Stephen Karam should never direct again. There was no reason to shoot that fucking thing like a horror movie if you can't deliver on that stylistic choice. Not that it should have been turned into a horror movie, of course, but the text did not support the style whatsoever.

Loathe Ben Platt but at least he could sing the score of DEH. Granted it was written FOR HIM but he was still able to sing it.

I have heard this complaint from a few friends who have seen A Strange Loop at the Lyceum. If the person who posted above also noticed the issue during Be More Chill, I wonder if it's something to do with the acoustics in the house. The Lyceum is not known for being a musical house. Review: Beanie Feldstein Grabs the Spotlight, Unsteadily, in ‘Funny Girl’

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 543April 25, 2022 12:35 AM

It’s not quite savage, but it’s not good. There’s some serious burns in there.

by Anonymousreply 544April 25, 2022 12:39 AM

Cote captures the problem here. Feldstein’s abundance of shortcomings take this tale of a hardworking girl who was too good to be denied and makes it a wish fulfillment fantasy. Lucky Girl.

Barbra's actually getting quite a nice 80th birthday present by all the great mentions of her original stage and screen performance. The Beanster's handlers maybe didn't think this quite through...

The Hollywood reporter says Beanie gives a “highly enjoyable” performance. It’s exactly as predicted.

I feel like anyone else would be getting slaughtered with reviews…but Beanie slides through

by Anonymousreply 553April 25, 2022 1:09 AM

From THR… “Feldstein gives a spirited, highly enjoyable performance, and her freshness drew squeals of appreciation from what seemed like a large contingent of very vocal young female fans on a recent press night. But she never quite makes the material soar, and this is a rickety vehicle that needs a supernova to put gas in its tank.”

Such gentle criticism my god.

by Anonymousreply 554April 25, 2022 1:10 AM

Criticism is dead.

by Anonymousreply 555April 25, 2022 1:11 AM

R553 Uh, did you actually read it? They panned the production and basically said she wasn't a good enough singer/star to pull it off....albeit in a nice way.

by Anonymousreply 556April 25, 2022 1:11 AM

Lol, THR spends nearly four paragraphs talking about Barbra Streisand and even name checks Lauren Ambrose. When most of the review is about other people than the star, you’re in trouble. What little they do say about her is barely complimentary at best and insulting at worst.

So far, the reviews are bad.

How long before closing?

by Anonymousreply 557April 25, 2022 1:13 AM

"But she has a lovely, light singing voice in a part that often calls for big-belt power, and she reads girlish, never quite selling the consuming hunger that propels Fanny to stardom in the early-1920s Ziegfeld Follies. Feldstein leans hard on the comedy with enormous charm, but she struggles to locate the raw vulnerability of Fanny in later years, as her marriage to inveterate gambler Nick Arnstein (Ramin Karimloo) falls apart.

The revival’s shortcomings by no means rest entirely on Feldstein’s shoulders. Neither director Michael Mayer nor script doctor Harvey Fierstein has solved the problems of the creaky book, which can’t build Fanny’s longing for offstage romantic fulfillment to match her professional success — and her eventual showbiz survivor resilience — into a robust through line. The show feels patchy and episodic and it needs a knockout, roof-raising lead to paper over the cracks."

That's not exactly "sliding through".

by Anonymousreply 558April 25, 2022 1:13 AM

Feldstein won't be savaged. Just like creepy Ben Platt wasn't for his dad's movie. Critics will be gentle, but won't say anything too nice.

by Anonymousreply 559April 25, 2022 1:13 AM

The not too subtle message of the above reviews is “ she stinks, but we need to keep our jobs.”

by Anonymousreply 560April 25, 2022 1:14 AM

WTF is up with that dowdy gold dress with all the fussy lace on Beanie in the photo accompanying the (bad) review at r546? Hideous color on her, though it would have been perfectly appropriate for Mrs. Strakosh. Also, that wig isn't exactly flattering either.

by Anonymousreply 561April 25, 2022 1:16 AM

One review said she nails 3 numbers -- but doesn't Fanny have like 11 or 12 numbers including a big reprise at the end?

by Anonymousreply 562April 25, 2022 1:17 AM

But the producers get the pull quote “spirited, highly enjoyable performace”

It sounds like something Rosie O’Donnell would say. I’m surprised the critic didn’t call Beanie a “cutie patootie”

by Anonymousreply 563April 25, 2022 1:18 AM

If Beanie is anything like her horrid brother she’ll be suicidal tonight, these kids are SERIOUSLY FRAGILE. During The Wolf Of Wall Street junket Jonah Hill would cry if anyone hinted that he was “funny” in the film, he considered that code for being fat. And I’m not saying baby tears, I’m talking Norma Desmond screaming over her dead monkey bellowing.

by Anonymousreply 564April 25, 2022 1:33 AM

Reading that Observer review and crying as I type this.
