My theory on why the local news isn't picking up on this story is because of how it dovetails with the recent conviction of Jussie Smollett. The younger guy, Declan, was also born in South Africa, but grew up and played soccer in Australia before getting the scholarship to attend Gannon University in Erie.

Most heroin now contains a lot of fentanyl. If they were regular heroin users, they probably knew it was there. If this was a one-off they might not have.

The article states that the paper used the Freedom of Information Act to write the article, having requested the records on May 25 and receiving them on June 1. The article was published June 10.

The article is behind the newspaper's paywall, but the link below should take you to an archived screencap of it.

Here are the paragraphs about how the police investigation started and what they found upon entering the room:
