It's sad, as 71 is not that old.
But frankly, for all the acclaim he received at his peak, he was always overrated, IMHO. He and many of his films are largely forgotten.

Natural causes? That isn't a legal cause of death. There has to be a medical reason to put on a death cert. Did he have a massive heart attack? Stroke? Cancer? Death at 71 is rather young these days.

According to wikipedia, he died of prostate cancer that spread to the bone.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he acted quite a bit here in Portland in local theater (which was quite a fall from being one of Hollywood's leading men just ten-fifteen years earlier), and got quite a reputation in the theater world here for being difficult and unpleasant. He was a monstrously insecure man who took his anxieties out on other people.

[quote]Of course, I then found out he beat up Marlee Matlin, which seems like about the lowest thing you could do, so I cast him out of my fantasies.
He did more than just beat her up, R16, she says he raped her during the time he was filming Broadcast News.
[quote]At just 21, Matlin had achieved the seemingly impossible, breaking ground for an entire community as the first-ever deaf actress to win an Oscar. Furthering the fairytale, Matlin’s category was presented by her then-boyfriend and Lesser God co-star, William Hurt (who was also nominated for Best Actor that year). Hurt read out the nominees, opened the envelope, announced and then signed Matlin’s name. A visibly emotional Matlin ascended to the podium, where she and Hurt kissed to thunderous applause.
[quote]But according to Matlin, her relationship with Hurt, which began when she was 19 and he was 35, was far from picture perfect.
[quote]On what ought to have been one of the happiest nights of her life, Matlin recalls sitting next to Hurt in their limo with the Academy Award statuette by her side, only to be berated by the actor. According to Matlin, Hurt, who had been dreading the possibility of Matlin winning the prestigious award, turned to her and asked, “What makes you think you deserve it?” He continued, “There are hundreds of actors who have worked for years for the recognition you just got handed to you. Think about that.”
[...]
[quote]Matlin also recounted finally leaving Hurt after a brutal fight. “I don’t remember when or how the fight started; what I know is that I have never been so scared in my life before or after that day,” she writes. “The struggle turned violent. I was afraid I might not survive. I pulled myself free and ran to the phone… Before I could say anything, Bill yanked the phone out of my hand and slammed it down.” The actress quotes the doctor who examined her afterward as saying, “There were fresh bruises on her arms and her face.” “I knew I couldn’t let myself go back—ever,” Matlin continues. “I was terrified for two reasons: we would in all likelihood fight again, or just as bad, I might not have had the strength to leave.”

He had a nice cleft chin but a sallow, sunken chest.
A friend saw him play the father in 'Long Day's Journey Into Night'. It's a long, tedious, repetitious play but William Hurt continuously forgot his lines over and over which sent the other actors into a panic.

[quote]Didn't he freak out in court years ago during the custody hearing for his son?
I don't know about a custody hearing but he beat Marlee Matlin up in front of his son.
From the same source as R79:
[quote]Matlin isn’t the only woman who’s accused Hurt of abuse over the course of his prolific career.
[quote]In 1989, the actor was engulfed in a minor scandal due to a palimony trial. According to reports at the time, Hurt’s ex Sandra Jennings alleged that she and the actor had lived together as common-law husband and wife, which therefore entitled her to half of his estimated $10 million in assets. The Chicago Tribune reported that Jennings, who met the actor in 1981, alleged that Hurt employed “violent physical and verbal” abuse against her. She also claimed that he “smashed her across the face” only five days after the birth of their child. She was allegedly holding their son at the time of the beating. Jennings also cited Hurt’s abuse of Marlee Matlin, which she reportedly learned about from her son. Jennings alleged that during visits, her son witnessed Hurt kicking his live-in girlfriend. Hurt denied ever hitting Jennings.
[quote]“He’d have one drink and he’d have a personality change,” said Jennings. “Then when he didn’t drink for a couple of days, he’d get violent. I started seeing it, and that’s why I started going to Al-Anon meetings. But he was absolutely refusing to talk about it at that time, or consider it.”
[quote]Jennings’ attorney alleged that she had two abortions over the course of her relationship with Hurt, the second because the actor “was beating her up so much.” Hurt was supported in the trial by some of his famous friends, who cited the actor’s heroic struggle to deal with his substance abuse. “The important thing,” said Glenn Close, “is that Bill is really doing something about it. He’s seeking support, and he’s passionate about it, and for that reason he has my deepest respect. He’s in great shape, the best he’s ever been in. I think he’s actually quite a different person.”
[quote]If Hurt was seen as a controversial figure during the Jennings trial, the accusations against him seem to have been largely forgotten. In 2005, he received his fourth Oscar nomination for A History of Violence. In the wake of Matlin’s allegations, he’s starred in Robin Hood and Captain America: Civil War. In total, his IMDb page boasts 100 acting credits.
[quote]And while Hurt denied Jennings’ accusations of abuse, he barely disputed Matlin’s scathing account. In response to the actress’ memoir, Hurt released a statement to Access Hollywood: “My own recollection is that we both apologized and both did a great deal to heal our lives. Of course, I did and do apologize for any pain I caused. And I know we both have grown. I wish Marlee and her family nothing but good.”

Keith Richards got off heroin years ago. They stay so active and they never gain weight so he will probably live a long time. He has looked pretty rough since his 20s when he was a heavy drug user. I think my favorite movie of Hurts is the Big Chill followed by Broadcast News. People were talking about John Hurt. He was the one who played The Elephant Man Right?

That palimony lawsuit was brought on because in North Carolina (IIRC), where the Big Chill was filmed, the common law marriage rule was extremely short, like 3 weeks of living together. Crazy. Apparently, Hurt was shacked up with a woman for the duration of the filming. Afterwards, she sued him.

William Hurt seemed to have come out of nowhere to star in his first film "Altered States"; he looked good, very WASPy and was nude, too, so he was memorable in that film about water tanks. OK, he was at Juilliard and did some stage work. But why did he try to make Marlee Matlin guilty about possibly winning an Oscar on their way to the Oscars? He himself had an "in" to get cast as a lead in his first film. But a very good actor, especially in "Broadcast News" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman". RIP

John Heard was another actor who was accused of being abusive to partners/spouses. He lived together with Melissa Leo and had a son with her. He got arrested for assault because she said he slapped her and IIRC, they had a heated custody battle over the kid. Heard later married a woman and twins with her and then was estranged from the twins.

Because he was a deeply insecure asshole. He resented that she won an Oscar for her first appearance in film when it took him a couple of years (although it honestly did not take him that long--only five years), and he was also nominated that year and did not win.

Marlee seems happy at the Critics Choice Awards. But, she might be a little pissed at the Oscars due to the dead people slideshow that feature Hurt.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 13, 2022 11:29 PM |
This freaks me out.
I have never had a random, fleeting thought about William Hurt - EVER - until yesterday in the shower, when my mind was wandering and I mused over how hot Hurt had been in his early films. I wondered what he looked like these days.
And when I learned why his name was trending on Twitter today, my blood ran cold.

by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 13, 2022 11:33 PM |
At R79 (article posted), Joy Behar sounds horrible. Interviewing Marlee about her book. Marlee clearly alleges that Hurt raped her. Behar questions Marlee more as if it was just a "lust"-ful relationship.
Glenn Close probably got asked by Hurt to say something favorable about him at the palimony trial involving the mother of Hurt's child. Close said Hurt is getting "support" for his substance abuse problems. She (Close) didn't say he wasn't a woman-beater or that she didn't believe the woman's story.

I honestly didn’t think Marlee’s performance was THAT great.
He was an odd character and I did enjoy some of his work. I’m actually shocked by his death because it feels so unexpected.

Hollywood actors should understand that the Academy Awards are like electing prom king and prom queen. There are no metrics that the Academy puts out so that people can tally up points and see if it makes any sense. E.g., figure skating. Some of it is subjective, but some of it is quantitative & easily measurable. Did you attempt a ____ jump, how many rotations, did you land on one foot or fall, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | March 14, 2022 12:08 AM |
[quote] Marlee seems happy at the Critics Choice Awards.
She did say in an interview (few years ago) she last saw Hurt 3 years ago at some event - and even though he was across the room, it triggered her and suffered PTSD
So maybe she is happy, because now Hurt is truly gone from her life.

R131, that's mentioned in the article @ R79
[quote]In a telling passage from her memoir, Matlin described running into Hurt unexpectedly “about three years ago.”
[quote]“It had been so long since we’d had any contact,” she wrote, “but I realized my feelings about him remained so unresolved, I freaked out when I saw him across the room.” When asked by O’Dell if she discussed the book with her ex before it was published, Matlin countered, “I had no contact with him. Really, I had nothing to say to him. He knows what happened, I know what happened. We both were there.”

R21, the things you listed *are* natural causes, and "natural" is a legal check-off box on a death certificate (along with homicide, suicide, accident, or undetermined). Hurt as Nick in "The Big Chill" is sublime (off-topic, but "TBC" seems to be one of the most misunderstood films ever). And, his character is correct when he, basically, points out that they're all posers.
and that scene in "Body Heat" when he can't bring himself to turn the doorknob to the boathouse, lifts his hand to it a couple of times, then walks away to stare at it from a distance, leg twitching.
He was a very talented guy.

I remember reading The Devils Candy how people couldn't believe he wasn't cast as Sherman McCoy in Bonfire of the Vanities... a blessing in disguise in the end
His ultimate career mistake appears to have been passing up Jurassic Park... while the Alan Grant role didn't project Sam Neill into stardom, it likely would have kept Hurt's profile above water in the 90s.

I remember when the abuse allegations came out - *way* before all the #Me Too stuff. The idea that the guy would beat a woman, no less a deaf woman, seemed at odds with the generally low key characters he tended to play & image he conveyed. But there's clearly a lot of anecdotal evidence that the guy was a primo asshole. Unlike someone like Depp, who at one time managed to get past messy relationship problems, Hurt never did even though he was pretty talented (at one time).
The last thing I remember about him was that he was supposed to be in that Greg Allman bio pic where the film crew got hit by a train.

Marlee Matlin was shocked when Entertainment Tonight asked her point blank about the death of William Hurt at the Critics Choice Awards last night
She wasn't shocked, in that she didn't know he died, She was shocked that E.T. had the gall to ask her about him on the Red Carpet
Choosing her words carefully she said
“You’re the first person to ask me about him,” the actress, who is deaf, signed to a reporter on the Critics’ Choice Awards red carpet, shrugging her shoulders and looking visibly shocked.
“We’ve lost a really great actor and working with him on set in ‘Children of a Lesser God’ will always be something I remember very fondly,” she continued. “He taught me a great deal as an actor and he was one-of-a-kind.”

I always found him really sexy. Loved his lean nude body in Body Heat and Broadcast News. And those eyes, that cleft chin...
You could tell he never had to do a thing to get his naturally lovely physique at his peak. He had that "God's gift" air about him.

Yeah he thought so too.

Indeed, and seemed angry about it

R259 interesting. That’s no oversight, obviously, he wasn’t allowed to bring it up.

Rewatched "Gorky Park" the other night in honor of Hurt and....meh. It really has a schlocky feel to it.
The plot really makes no sense and is given to ever-increasing absurdities.
Some of the Russian characters speak the King's English and others have the standard Eastern European, which is confusing, at best.
And Hurt is VERY affected and mannered, playing a Russian cop like an SNL caricature. He clearly wasn't comfortable in the role.

Aww Meg Tilly. Bless her.

I want to make fun of her, cradling her mug, but I can't. She's too heartfelt.

[quote] Holly Hunter was on Seth Meyers tonight. There were pointedly no questions asked about Hurt,
Possible that show was pre-taped
Because on The Today Show Holly Hunter spoke about Hurt
“Well, Bill was like my first great mentor,” she told the third hour of Today on Tuesday. “He was an incredibly serious actor. It was sacred to Bill. And that sacredness, I loved that. It was a rare thing to see someone approach work with that vibe. So, I felt safe with Bill.”

Just saw this on video and Hunter was very emotionless - like she was reciting talking points with NO emotion
There was no sadness and no emotion, no "oh man what a great loss"
by Anonymous | reply 270 | March 15, 2022 11:52 PM |
So sorry I didn't have a meltdown for your enjoyment.

[quote] So sorry I didn't have a meltdown for your enjoyment.
No one is saying she should have a meltdown
But at least show some sympathy, and she couldn't do that - it was like she was reading off a script for the first time, devoid of emotion.

[quote] Hunter was very emotionless
But isn't this person an automaton? They relied on a director and editor to give them life on screen?
They were thankfully mute on that tedious 'Piano' movie.

Holly Hunter worked with William Hurt on Broadcast News
During the time Marlee Matlin said he was out of control with his drinking, drug use and abuse.

R270 maybe for her it was just an acting job. Would the death of any of your former coworkers make you sad, especially from so many years ago?
by Anonymous | reply 275 | March 16, 2022 12:12 AM |
I was waiving my hands all over the place and Holly just ignored me.

Holly Hunter costarred opposite Nicholas Cage and Harvey Keitel (in different films).
So "crazy raging asshole" is a type she's well acquainted with.

Marlee Matlin & Holly Hunter at a photo shoot - and are positioned at OPPOSITE ends - way at the end of each side
Far away from one another
by Anonymous | reply 280 | March 16, 2022 2:03 AM |
And you figured that out all by yourself?
by Anonymous | reply 281 | March 16, 2022 2:05 AM |
Meg Tilly has a beautiful soul and a way with words. It takes effort to remain so emotionally truthful and personally vulnerable at her age. She wasn't even overlooking issues. She reminded us that we each have our individual experience of one another. A real experience. She acknowledged Hurt's reputation and probably witnessed some of his professional misconduct. But to her, he was a kind protector. It's obvious that William Hurt had a beautiful soul. And it's well known that he was an angry abusive man. Both things can exist at once. We are living breathing human beings. But you have to drink nothing stronger than tea and live on Victoria Island to understand these things.
William Hurt was extremely attractive for a white man. That IS the sensitivity and hidden hurt come through those gorgeous fine bones and lips. He's very white but of the finest grade. I'd never heard of Meg Tilly - but she was in the Big Chill? That movie is goofy but I recognize her now. Meg gave birth to Christ's baby too.
Holly Hunter is one of the most inarticulate actors around. Her I know. She is not a mystery. Like many others before her - she is extremely talented on screen and delivers witty intelligent dialogue and emotion with such finesse. But she is borderline retarded in real life. She is the worst interview ever. She's so dumb, she's almost Marisa Tomei.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | March 16, 2022 2:06 AM |
R281 Marlee & Holly at opposite ends is not accidental - it is intentional
by Anonymous | reply 283 | March 16, 2022 2:07 AM |
People always try to equate “coworkers” in the entertainment industry with like, working in an office, I guess to feel stars just like us better about themselves - but really “it’s an entirely different experience, altogether.”

by Anonymous | reply 285 | March 16, 2022 2:08 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 286 | March 16, 2022 2:09 AM |
R286 - not as much as Holly Hunter - as R282 says

Hurt's daughter Jeanne (far left) and her mother Sandrine Bonnaire (far right), with Bonnaire's sister Sabine and Brigitte Macron.

He was a wonderful actor, but I, too, disliked his performance in KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN. Here's a book by another ex-girlfriend, who he physically and emotionally abused. Notice a pattern?
by Anonymous | reply 289 | March 16, 2022 2:19 AM |
Here is the shocking, SHOCKING interview that Holly Hunter did on the Today show! Notice how she pretended it was a vacuous morning show, pushing the new season of her goofy comedy series and NOT a David Frost interview! She's an Ice Queen! And notice how she's not sitting near MARLEE MATLIN! Marlee isn't even in the same room! It's intentional! It's a cover up! It's a conspiracy!
by Anonymous | reply 290 | March 16, 2022 2:20 AM |
R290 you have really gone down the rabbit hole - maybe stop watching Fox News
by Anonymous | reply 291 | March 16, 2022 2:21 AM |
Well, I'm convinced. William Hurt ate babies with Marlee Matlin and Holly Hunter. It's all so clear to me now. That video is undeniable proof!

William and Mary Beth were both among the dozens of actors in the rotating cast of the 1989 production of A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters", but they didn't play it with each other: he acted with Pamela Reed; and Mary Beth acted with Anthony Heald.
