Some of the things noted here seem bad, while others, like addressing the Family Research Council, are irritating, but don't seem to have affected LGBT life much.

Important to look at the past: From 1953 until c. 1975, gays were banned from serving in the federal government at all, including all armed forces. I have a hard time thinking that anything Trump did could have measured up to those times. So I don't know how to compare Trump with Eisenhower or JFK or Johnson when it comes to LGBT rights, let alone Millard Fillmore or Lincoln.

George W. Bush decided for himself when he left office that he would not express any political opinions about his successor. I’d like to know what Michelle would have thought about Bush if he had instead ripped Obama a new one every time Obama made a mistake or instituted a bad policy. Trump policies didn't just go away, shit-for-brains. That's not actually how the world works except for right-wing douchebags who lie about and deny their culpability in most of the mess we see everywhere.

DADT was the compromise because the GOP wanted to keep the total ban on gays.

Clinton helped create the compromise which stopped recruiters from asking if someone was LGBT. Clinton said the compromise was made because he was promised that gays could still be gay without fear when in the military. The right wing military had other ideas. It interpreted DADT to mean that if anyone found out you were gay, you would still be thrown out.

Clinton’s intentions were good and he put a lot of political capital into letting gays into the military but it turned into a witch hunt, which wasn’t Clinton’s intention.

GWB was fine with the witch hunts and purges and didn’t touch DADT and also proposed the anti gay marriage amendment

Trump wrote an Executive Order allowing medical personnel to deny care to LGBT if it was against their religious beliefs.

Of all the rules against LGBT, THAT one is the absolute worst. It basically means you you be bleeding out and dying and a doctor could ignore you because he thinks that’s what Jesus would want him to do.

Trump’s DOJ submitted amicus briefs to SCOTUS supporting that businesses can fire gays because they are gay and supporting that businesses can refuse to serve gays because they are gay.

These go to the heart of being an American and Trump wanted those rights denied to us

Just to add to R41, Clinton ran on and wanted to lift the ban on gays in the military, but the opposition from the Pentagon and much of Congress made it impossible. And the military was reaching a crisis point on the issue because of the codification of the ban a decade earlier. The first military policies on gays started with a ban on "sodomy" and for most of the 20th Century was fuzzy, enforced sporadically, and not even uniform across the military branches. There were even a few court wins by gay servicemen challenging their dishonorable discharges (although still more losses). Until Reagan, of course. One of the first things the DOD did after he became president was issue new regs that explicitly stated "homosexuality is incompatible with military service." The regs applied across the board and to servicemen who either engaged in "homosexual acts" or demonstrated a "propensity" to do so. So unlike in the old days you could no longer stay in by just keeping a lid on the gay sex. Throughout the 80s there were more and more stories coming forward of gay servicemen who were getting bounced and denied benefits just for "being" gay, which was a marked difference from before when a gay servicemember was only likely to be kicked out if he was caught doing something. So basically Clinton's compromise was let's at least go back to the old rule that if you keep a lid on it you can serve, but added that the military isn't allowed to even ask.

It didn't work of course, and Clinton later admitted it was a mistake. Fun fact: it was Colin Powell who convinced Clinton it could work and that there would be no backlash on gay servicemembers doing things like going to gay bars so long as they were not in uniform. Clinton should have known better than to listen to that war criminal.

R47 Trump specifically said he'd appoint SCOTUS justices who would overturn Obergefell. And then he did.

One of the reasons coastal cities like NY and San Francisco became such gay meccas was because the military kicked out soldiers and marines for being gay, and the guys were too frightened and embarrassed to go back home being dishonorably discharged having brought shame to their families.

Of course, Bill Clinton tried to do something good with the Don't Ask, Don't Tell compromise, but even back then the Republicans were masters in sabotaging every Liberal progress. The only thing you can blame Bill Clinton for is to trust any Republican to have his back. They screwed him over any chance they got.

When Trump was running, he SPECIFICALLY said that he would name SCOTUS judges to overturn gay marriage. Only when he got elected, did he change his mind. Also, by then the polls were strongly supportive of gay marriage so he wasn't going to use political capital on that.

Obama and Clinton never even had to change their minds. Neither one of them were every really anti-gay. The stupidity of those who go after them is that they don't seem to accept that most people who lean right simply don't like gays. They barely tolerate gays and the garbage gays we have on here or any of those who lean right, can't accept that they are OTHER along with every other minority group.
