Matt Damon says he stopped saying the 'f-slur' after his daughter wrote a treatise explaining why it's 'dangerous'

Matt Damon says the recent cultural shift has taught him to "shut the f*** up more" — including "retiring" a homophobic slur from his vocabulary.

In a new interview with the Sunday Times, the Oscar winner, 50, admits he stopped using what he called the "f-slur" after one of the four daughters he shares with wife Luciana protested.

“The word that my daughter calls the ‘f-slur for a homosexual’ was commonly used when I was a kid, with a different application,” Damon told the U.K. newspaper. “I made a joke, months ago, and got a treatise from my daughter. She left the table. I said, ‘Come on, that’s a joke! I say it in the movie Stuck on You!’ She went to her room and wrote a very long, beautiful treatise on how that word is dangerous. I said, ‘I retire the f-slur!’ I understood.”

Damon also reflected on other controversial remarks he's made. Amid the rise of the #MeToo movement, the Good Will Hunting actor made comments regarding the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, the former film producer who helped catapult Damon to stardom and is now serving a 23-year prison sentence. In 2017, Damon said, “As the father of four daughters, this is the kind of sexual predation that keeps me up at night," which prompting swift criticism. Now, he sees why every person should be horrified by Weinstein's actions, not just fathers.

“I understand,” he said, referring to the backlash he received. “It’s a fair point. Anybody should be offended by that behavior.”

Recognizing the changing shape of media and how quickly his public comments can be turned into headlines, Damon also said that “20 years ago, the best way I can put it is that the journalist listened to the music more than the lyrics [of an interview]. Now your lyrics are getting parsed, to pull them out of context and get the best headline possible. Everyone needs clicks."

The Stillwater star — whose new film has been called out by Amanda Knox for taking liberties with her personal trauma — told the publication that the increased media scrutiny has made him more careful with his words.

"Before it didn’t really matter what I said, because it didn’t make the news," said Damon. "But maybe this shift is a good thing. So I shut the f*** up more.”

Recently, Damon spoke about the relationship he shares with his daughters. In an interview last month with CBS Sunday Morning, he explained that his children are some of his strongest critics. For example, his 15-year-old daughter, Isabella, doesn't want to see her dad in Good Will Hunting, the 1997 film that skyrocketed him to international stardom.

"She doesn't want to see any movies that I'm in that might be good. She just likes to give me shit," said Damon, Yahoo Life previously reported. "My daughter said, 'Hey remember that movie you did, The Wall?' I said, 'It was called The Great Wall.' She goes, 'Dad, there was nothing great about that movie.' She keeps my feet firmly on the ground."

I can't believe he was still using the f-slur as an adult.

This isn't someone who is basically uneducated, either--this is someone who went through seven semesters of Harvard.

by Anonymousreply 1August 1, 2021 6:09 PM

The worst is that he *still* thinks his "fag" jokes are hilarious. Fuck this fugly piece of inbred-looking shit.

by Anonymousreply 2August 1, 2021 6:15 PM

"My daughter said, 'Hey remember that word you use, "fag"?' I said, 'it's faggot'.' She goes, 'Dad, there was nothing you got about using that word.' She keeps my feet firmly on the ground."

by Anonymousreply 3August 1, 2021 6:16 PM

Get over yourself, you attention seeking whore! Your daughter wrote a long treatise? Big deal. This isn’t the United Nations.

by Anonymousreply 4August 1, 2021 6:16 PM

Oh fank you Matt for not using that horrible word anymore. You are a true hero!

🙄

by Anonymousreply 5August 1, 2021 6:16 PM

He is so annoying with his "I had a daughter so I now care about..."

by Anonymousreply 6August 1, 2021 6:17 PM

It’s 2021… Matt Damon didn’t realize that it wasn’t okay to say the f-word? 🙄🙄🙄

by Anonymousreply 7August 1, 2021 6:17 PM

Is this supposed to be some kind of PR for his redneck movie (I'm just a good ol' boy whose daughter wags her finger when I talk regular.')

by Anonymousreply 8August 1, 2021 6:18 PM

This motherfucker shows why it's important that gay actors play gay roles.

by Anonymousreply 9August 1, 2021 6:19 PM

Matt casting-couched his way to the middle, so you think he’d know.

by Anonymousreply 10August 1, 2021 6:20 PM

It’s still not working, Matt. You’re still running off at the mouth.

by Anonymousreply 11August 1, 2021 6:20 PM

Dl drooled over this fugly tard why exactly?

by Anonymousreply 12August 1, 2021 6:22 PM

Remember when he said gay actors should keep their private lives private, while he brings his wife to red carpets?

by Anonymousreply 13August 1, 2021 6:22 PM

How the hell didn't he already know that he shouldn't be using the word?

It shouldn't take your kid, taking time out of her day, to write a damn essay for you to stop using it.

by Anonymousreply 14August 1, 2021 6:23 PM

I am baffled.

Most fairly educated straight people his age have known that saying "f--t" in ANY context is uncool for DECADES.

That was a thing even before describing things as "gay" to mean "corny" or "cheesy" became a no-no

by Anonymousreply 15August 1, 2021 6:24 PM

Matt Damon is the kind of the preemptive strike. He and Affleck were all about getting ahead of everything during MeToo movement. Agree with everyone who thinks the the fact that he thought it was still funny, especially after espousing himself as an ultra Hollywood liberal speaks volumes.

As annoying and weird as Gen Z is, I do love their acceptance and I love his daughter for doing that (even if he is using it for PR).

When I think of most of the division and social justice drama, it's not really the Gen Z who are causing it. It's just who they are. I think the root of a lot of this stuff is caused my older millennial white women (mid 30's) who often do not practice what they preach,

by Anonymousreply 16August 1, 2021 6:24 PM

It's what he says to himself in the mirror: "C'mon, man- don't fag-out on me".

by Anonymousreply 17August 1, 2021 6:25 PM

And just to think....all of the previous posts on DL exalting the "Damon Butt"....wanting it to sit on your faces. He's' been using homophobic slurs his entire life until a child told him to stop. But he didn't mean it like that though....

by Anonymousreply 18August 1, 2021 6:26 PM

This is how homophobia is passed from generation to generation. At least his daughter has a moral compass.

I hope this ends his Hollywood career.

by Anonymousreply 19August 1, 2021 6:28 PM

It's the Irish Catholic Boston of it all. There is this ingrained (and I am hating myself for using the following), "toxic masculinity" in this community that is next level.

Maybe in ten MORE years he'll be suitably embarrassed.

How does his hetero buddy George feel about this language?

by Anonymousreply 24August 1, 2021 6:35 PM

Y'all are naive if you think "good" people don't use faggot. Look at DaBaby. Heteros still feel superior to gays. Plenty of the gals at LSA are salty that homophobia took him down.

by Anonymousreply 25August 1, 2021 6:37 PM

The piece of shit was still RECENTLY saying f-g??? Wow, I hate him even more now.

by Anonymousreply 26August 1, 2021 6:37 PM

Don't turn to Hollywood for lessons in morality or integrity.

by Anonymousreply 27August 1, 2021 6:38 PM

It took his daughter to educate him on why he shouldn't be saying that word?!

What an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 28August 1, 2021 6:44 PM

I swear to fuck this idiot has given himself a new mission in life this month and that mission is to repel everyone but deplorables. He only wants right-wing garbage to watch his movies.

BTW...congrats Matt. Your mission is so far a raving success.

by Anonymousreply 29August 1, 2021 6:45 PM

Right Wingers would not be turned on by a man getting schooled by his daughter.

by Anonymousreply 39August 1, 2021 6:57 PM

He is a complete fucking idiot if he thought this admission puts him in a good light.

by Anonymousreply 40August 1, 2021 7:00 PM

What context would a 50 year old straight white man use the word "faggot" around his children?!

by Anonymousreply 41August 1, 2021 7:00 PM

In the same context that he'd use "don't be a pussy!"

by Anonymousreply 42August 1, 2021 7:01 PM

How do you think we got to a place where it was also socially acceptable to also use gay to mean “corny” or “cheesy.?” Homophobia didn’t go away. People hide it; like they hide their racism. They will refrain from using racial slurs in public, but they will use them in private. People keep their homophobia in the closet now.

by Anonymousreply 43August 1, 2021 7:01 PM

R20 Matt Damon is not Irish, not Catholic, and he’s not a Bostonian. He’s a Cantabrigian from the other side of the Charles River. Different worlds.

by Anonymousreply 44August 1, 2021 7:03 PM

Matt Damon is getting absolutely dragged on Twitter today for multiple reasons:

1. His admission that he still not-so-secretly loves using the words "fag" and "faggot" in jokes and in casual conversation

2. That he stole the idea for his shit movie Stillwater from Amanda Knox

3. His claim that literally anybody could've played Iron Man successfully instead of Robert Downey Jr

He's done.

by Anonymousreply 45August 1, 2021 7:04 PM

Don't underestimate Straight White Male Loyalty.

Pin this on your fridge and refer to it from time to time. It's the best comment on DL in the last 6 months.

by Anonymousreply 47August 1, 2021 7:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 48August 1, 2021 7:10 PM

I knew Affleck was a homophobic asswipe but Damon has been claiming to be mature on gay rights for a long time.

[Quote] How do you think we got to a place where it was also socially acceptable to also use gay to mean “corny” or “cheesy.?”

Yep. I had a conversation with a group of straight people at the height of "That's so gay" and they swore that it had nothing to do with sexual orientation. Simon Amstell knocked that claim down quite succinctly: "Anyone who has a problem with 'That's so gay' should just jew off. And stop being so bloody black about it."

by Anonymousreply 51August 1, 2021 7:14 PM

Disgusting that he was still using this a few months ago. It’s 2021. ‘Fag’ has been a no go for nearly thirty years.

What douchey behaviour. Does he really think giving up the word is a great act of beneficence?

by Anonymousreply 52August 1, 2021 7:14 PM

[quote] Y'all are naive if you think "good" people don't use faggot. Look at DaBaby. Heteros still feel superior to gays. Plenty of the gals at LSA are salty that homophobia took him down.

Whites still feel superior to black people. As your attempt to paint homophobia as some sort of anomaly among whites (the vast majority off whom continue to vote for the very anti gay Republican Party) and the standard among black people (based on anonymous internet posts that you have not shared) demonstrates.

by Anonymousreply 53August 1, 2021 7:15 PM

I…don’t know why he didn’t just keep this private and dedicate himself to doing better? I maintain that actors operate and exist on an 8th grade sense of awareness and intelligence. Even if they went to Harvard. The bubble they are forced to exist in just keeps them stunted.

by Anonymousreply 54August 1, 2021 7:15 PM

[Quote] ‘Fag’ has been a no go for nearly thirty years.

It hasn't. It really hasn't. As suggested upthread, some DLers really live in bubbles.

I'd argue that they know their audience better than "right thinking" people understand. People were up in arms about Liam Neeson's "I wanted kill any black man I could find" comment but is his career in tatters? No. The majority understand racism, homophobia, misogyny... they benefit from it, they enforce it. If it's expressed the right way, there's no backlash beyond a few think pieces and a shit ton of Twitter comments.

by Anonymousreply 56August 1, 2021 7:18 PM

I know he thinks this makes him look all humble and humbled, and big enough to admit that, but I'm now even more turned off by him.

by Anonymousreply 57August 1, 2021 7:22 PM

I never knew he was that much of a douchebag asshole.

I will never like him again.

by Anonymousreply 58August 1, 2021 7:23 PM

R54, I think he thought he'd be applauded for it but as we all know from watching these people, they don't live in the same world as the rest of us.

He's not just telling us that he used the word recently,

he's not just telling us that everyone he has been around when he used the word was okay with it,

he's not just telling us that people telling him that he shouldn't use the word didn't stop him from saying it (his own child had to write an essay),

he's not just telling us that being around multiple gay people over the years working in entertainment and working with them still didn't prevent him from using the word,

he's not just telling us that he ignored all pushes to end the use of the word in the media,

he's telling us that he's proud of himself for finally doing it and he's totally okay saying it outloud.

That burns my biscuits.

by Anonymousreply 59August 1, 2021 7:25 PM

Wow, Matt. Cool story bro!

The more he said, the stupider he sounded.

by Anonymousreply 60August 1, 2021 7:25 PM

Some of you have no idea how common it is for heteros to still say the f word especially when they don't think any gays are around to hear it. Even a lot of them who support or claim to support gay rights still use the word.

The f word gets treated like slurs for other groups-a lot of people not in that discriminated group will comfortably say it around other people when they don't think anyone present will be offended, even though they know they shouldn't say it at all. For whatever reason, a lot of people like putting groups they're not a part of down and think they're "being real" when they use slurs.

Not that Damon deserves an award but I do like that he is publicly saying he won't use the word anymore. Whether he still will say it privately (not around his daughter of course) is another matter

by Anonymousreply 61August 1, 2021 7:26 PM

Well said, r61.

by Anonymousreply 62August 1, 2021 7:27 PM

I'm a little confused why Matt needs to publicly document his "Becoming a Better Person, Sorta" campaign.

by Anonymousreply 64August 1, 2021 7:33 PM

[quote]Some of you have no idea how common it is for heteros to still say the f word especially when they don't think any gays are around to hear it.

Some of us have "passed" for straight (not even intentionally) for years and have still not heard the word in decades from straight people. I'm not saying some don't still use it, I'm sure many do, I am saying that it's not as common as you want to believe it is among them.

Hang around better people.

by Anonymousreply 65August 1, 2021 7:34 PM

He has a new movie out aimed at MAGAts similar to the Bradley Cooper "American Sniper".

by Anonymousreply 66August 1, 2021 7:34 PM

It's the same thing as people getting pissed with "cancel culture." Anyone who pays attention knows that true "cancellation" rarely happens, so why get pissed? These people are really pissed that the f-slurs, the n-slurs, and the c-slurs are fighting back. "If we can't make fun of f's, n's, and c's, then who can we make fun of?"

by Anonymousreply 67August 1, 2021 7:34 PM

Just closet behavior.

by Anonymousreply 68August 1, 2021 7:35 PM

R65 you can't help it if you're out in public and hear straights saying it. I've heard it on the subway, I've heard it while waiting in line and I've heard it while they were talking about sports. All 3 were within the last 5 years and it was hetero guys talking to each other in casual conversation, not bullying or targeting anyone who may have been near them. I agree public usage of the f word has gotten much better but you do still hear it. Obviously I'd never have friends who I knew used the word but you never know what random strangers will say.

by Anonymousreply 74August 1, 2021 7:46 PM

R59 That’s what I thought. I bet Chris Hemsworth will be reading the headlines like “Goddamnit”

by Anonymousreply 75August 1, 2021 7:46 PM

Part of me has learned not object to the word fruity. In the 21st century I’ve learned not to fear words. I’m delighted with who and what I am. I only hope that the foolishness of Matt Damon’s century won’t have him apologizing where no offense was given.

by Anonymousreply 84August 1, 2021 8:13 PM

You nailed it, R59.

If Matt Damon is so easily discussing his going around using a gay slur, then CLEARLY other people have heard him saying it.

Hollywood directors, producers, actors, agents, friends, makeup people, wardrobe people. Anyone who has ever worked around him, has probably heard him saying it.

And NO ONE ever said anything to him? Why? Because he's the big "Matt Damon?"

Oh FUCK THAT.

Please let's just cancel this Boston trash once and for all!

by Anonymousreply 85August 1, 2021 8:16 PM

He's telling us now, so he doesn't have to tell us later.

Matt must be facing rape or sexual harrassment charges. He's been finding every opportunity to mention his fucking wife and kids in every single interview.

by Anonymousreply 87August 1, 2021 8:19 PM

Exactly, R87.

He's obviously trying to get in front of some negative story coming up.

by Anonymousreply 88August 1, 2021 8:27 PM

DL has:

•  a lot of gay men over the age of 70 who grew up in an era of rampant homophobia

• a lot of gay men who live in Darkest Flyoverstan

• a lot of gay men who come from blue collar backgrounds and/or live in blue collar areas

Thus you get comments like R43 and others.

While I have no doubt that a bunch of blue collar teenage boys on the subway may have used the word, it's just not a thing among the sort of people Damon likely socializes with.

by Anonymousreply 89August 1, 2021 8:35 PM

He’s an idiot. It never had a “different application.” Saying “faggot” meant “weak,” like a…faggot.

by Anonymousreply 110August 1, 2021 8:59 PM

Wisdom from the twitter thread posted above.

[quote]Matt and I are the same age and regrettably I also grew up using that word but I think I realized it was hurtful and stopped using it somewhere around 1985.

[quote] Just recently?

[quote] Do people know they don’t have to publicly tell every shitty thing they do? Therapy is out there, too.

by Anonymousreply 111August 1, 2021 9:06 PM

As one of the Billy Eichner followers said, all the reports of this will mention Matt's new movie. Ugh. His publicists probably include gay men. It's all so cynical.

by Anonymousreply 112August 1, 2021 9:12 PM

[quote]Damon also reflected on other controversial remarks he's made.

I won't get into the "f-word" stuff, but in my opinion, anyone who felt that Damon's comment about Weinstein implied that he feels that people who don't have daughters would or should not be upset about Weinstein's crimes is an absolute idiot.

[Quote] he feels that people who don't have daughters would or should not be upset about Weinstein's crimes is an absolute idiot.

No. The implication was that Damon only started caring about how women have to navigate the world when he procreated. That's what pissed people off.

"I have a daughter... Women should be treated fairly! I believe that NOW!"

by Anonymousreply 115August 1, 2021 9:17 PM

[quote]you can't help it if you're out in public and hear straights saying it. I've heard it on the subway, I've heard it while waiting in line and I've heard it while they were talking about sports. All 3 were within the last 5 years and it was hetero guys talking to each other in casual conversation, not bullying or targeting anyone who may have been near them.

I've been out in public, in several cities, across a few continents in the past 5 years and I'm sorry, I've never heard it. Your experience is your own. My experiences are my own. I can't argue with what you've experienced. You can't argue with what I've experienced. We have not lived each other's lives.

Like I said, while there are still people who use the word it's not as prevalent as you were implying in your initial tweet and it seems like you agree, that it's better than it used to be but you still hear it. I respect that.

[quote]Gurrrrlllll!!!

"Girl" me all you want, R73. I said unintentionally. If someone asks me point blank if I'm gay, I'll tell them. I don't hide anything. I've been around enough straights to say that I spend a lot of time around them. That involves the kind of work I do. Shit tons of lesbians. No real gay men I have ever been able to find. If I'm hanging around a bunch of basketball players, no one asks and they usually don't find out until someone asks if I'm married because I wear a ring. If I say yes. They'll ask what's her name. I'll say, "His name is James." Then everyone gets quiet for 5 minutes. :)

That being said I hear a lot of things. I still can't say I've heard anyone use that word since the early 00s. I do still hear people refer to things as "gay" a lot but that's another topic. I still also hear "retar*ed" a lot too.

by Anonymousreply 116August 1, 2021 9:22 PM

R116 what age are you?

by Anonymousreply 117August 1, 2021 9:26 PM

[quote]The implication was that Damon only started caring about how women have to navigate the world when he procreated. That's what pissed people off.

That's EXACTLY the "implication" that I don't see AT ALL. This "controversy" is akin to criticizing a father who says, "When I think about how I would feel if my young son were sexually abused by a Catholic priest, it makes me physically ill" because you stupidly think he's implying that people who don't have young sons would or should not be sickened by the crime. Do you understand now?

by Anonymousreply 118August 1, 2021 9:27 PM

He states the daughter got up from the table after his offensive language meaning he was throwing around 'fag' at the dinner table. LMAO. Fucking idiot across the board.

His films are DEAD to me.

by Anonymousreply 119August 1, 2021 9:29 PM

He likely meant referring to things as "faggy" which has a different meaning (uncool or overly stylish) but is no less offensive.

by Anonymousreply 120August 1, 2021 9:30 PM

He’s dead to you only now R119?

by Anonymousreply 121August 1, 2021 9:31 PM

I wonder if he still uses k-ke.

by Anonymousreply 122August 1, 2021 9:32 PM

Jesus, R120 - are you really that stupid? I kind of hope that you’re a troll.

by Anonymousreply 123August 1, 2021 9:36 PM

I never believed he and thick Ben wrote one great screenplay yet could never, ever repeat this. Liars

by Anonymousreply 124August 1, 2021 9:36 PM

It should be no surprise by now that straight liberal men hate gays just as much as anyone. And fuck the bogus claim some like to use that "faggot" doesn't mean gay.

by Anonymousreply 125August 1, 2021 9:38 PM

Me neither, R124.

by Anonymousreply 126August 1, 2021 9:39 PM

[quote]His films are DEAD to me.

[Quote] That's EXACTLY the "implication" that I don't see AT ALL. Do I understand Matt Damon? I think I do: He's an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 128August 1, 2021 9:45 PM

This is like a self-cancellation. Are we really supposed to applaud this douche bag? I wouldn't have thought this has been acceptable language, well, since never but at least the last 3.5 decades.

by Anonymousreply 129August 1, 2021 9:46 PM

Matt is an ugly idiot who is the epitome of while male priveledge. He's been in about 4 good movies in his while career.

by Anonymousreply 130August 1, 2021 9:47 PM

So no love for film history? Fuck his history.

No. I don't think that's the implication. The implication is that he, Matt Damon, didn't give a shit until he'd created his own human female... and really, with the other kinds of comments he's made ("My daughter had to shame me into giving up the f-slur," "Gays should keep their private lives out of the public eye" - never mind that he parades his own wife on red carpets), it's not far fetched to conclude that Matt Damon didn't care about what's been faced by people who aren't Str8 White Males until he realized that X might happen to his offspring...

by Anonymousreply 132August 1, 2021 9:49 PM

No more re-watching the Talented Mr. Ripley, ladies.

by Anonymousreply 133August 1, 2021 9:50 PM

DM is moderating comments on this article. It appears he can dish it out but he can't take it. Typical.

by Anonymousreply 134August 1, 2021 9:51 PM

Ripley's a great movie, but I find it definitely homophobic and from another era where gays are considered evil.

by Anonymousreply 135August 1, 2021 9:52 PM

I can't believe he was dumb enough to say this. Does he not realize admitting he was still saying fag until a few months ago is a terrible look? You have been in the public too long to be this dumb

by Anonymousreply 136August 1, 2021 9:53 PM

I don't think Ripley is portrayed as evil. He even kills a "good" gay man, who offers him love and companionship.

by Anonymousreply 137August 1, 2021 9:54 PM

[Quote] I can't believe he was dumb enough to say this. Does he not realize admitting he was still saying fag until a few months ago is a terrible look? You have been in the public too long to be this dumb

It's only dumb to people who aren't lining up to see Matt Damon movies.

by Anonymousreply 138August 1, 2021 9:54 PM

R128, Matt Damon may or may not be an idiot -- I don't know enough about him to judge -- but I still maintain there's nothing wrong with saying re Weinstein, , “As the father of four daughters, this is the kind of sexual predation that keeps me up at night."

by Anonymousreply 139August 1, 2021 9:55 PM

^^Sure, when it comes to his kids he cares.

by Anonymousreply 140August 1, 2021 9:59 PM

He has played Liberace's lover and Tom Ripley.

I wonder how many times he made hateful antigay jokes on the sets of those movies if he just learned in 2021 that faggot is an offensive word.

by Anonymousreply 141August 1, 2021 9:59 PM

Stillwater tanked this weekend. $5.1 mill. I absolutely do not believe him that he was unaware the word is hurtful.

by Anonymousreply 142August 1, 2021 9:59 PM

[Quote] I still maintain there's nothing wrong with saying re Weinstein, , “As the father of four daughters, this is the kind of sexual predation that keeps me up at night."

Well, number one: It centres Damon and his offspring in the conversation. They don't need to be brought up at all. Moreover, Damon is an actor. How many female friends have told him war stories? How many girlfriends have told him X, Y, Z...? But of course, he doesn't bring that up because it would bring up how many people are culpable in systemic predation, including himself.

I remember a British actor did talk about it and how her got blacklisted by the Weinstein company for supporting a fellow actor, a female one.

by Anonymousreply 143August 1, 2021 10:00 PM

Really, the kind of predation that should keep Damon up at night is those gymnastic coaches. His daughters aren't meeting producers in hotel suites.

by Anonymousreply 144August 1, 2021 10:01 PM

IMO, he's trying to get ahead of something, do a peremptory strike.

It *is* an exercise in privilege to feel you have the right to cling to something that is no longer acceptable (and never was acceptable).

Agree with the poster above about the term "cancel culture" being used to automatically shut down valid discussions.

It reminds me of when people would dismiss a complaint as "you're being too PC now." There are some legit complaints out there, not only involving gay people.

by Anonymousreply 145August 1, 2021 10:01 PM

“ Is he the actor who said if you're gay and famous you shouldn't publicise it?”

So did Joy Behar and DL had nothing but praise for her for it.

by Anonymousreply 146August 1, 2021 10:04 PM

[quote]The implication is that he, Matt Damon, didn't give a shit until he'd created his own human female... and really, with the other kinds of comments he's made ("My daughter had to shame me into giving up the f-slur," "Gays should keep their private lives out of the public eye" - never mind that he parades his own wife on red carpets), it's not far fetched to conclude that Matt Damon didn't care about what's been faced by people who aren't Str8 White Males until he realized that X might happen to his offspring...

I still don't get your poinr, because presumably there were women in his life whom he cared about before he had daughters. I assume he meant that, when one has children of either sex, perhaps one becomes more aware of young people being preyed upon by older, more powerful people. I really don't see anything so awful about such a statement, and I think a lot of you are reading into it other levels of meaning that are not necessarily there.

P.S. I wasn't aware of Damon's comment that gays should keep their private lives out of the public eye, and if he actually said that, I would definitely classify it as stupid, offensive, and ignorant.

by Anonymousreply 147August 1, 2021 10:04 PM

No he's not. He's said this kind of shit before, over numerous years. He's just trying to publicize his movie.

by Anonymousreply 148August 1, 2021 10:04 PM

I'm so over outrage and cancel. If his movies are good watch them, I know that I will.

Who gives a fuck!

by Anonymousreply 149August 1, 2021 10:05 PM

[Quote] I assume he meant that, when one has children of either sex, perhaps one becomes more aware of young people being preyed upon by older, more powerful people.

That's very odd to me. Matt Damon was once a young person - a fucking young, himbo actor no less. Don't tell me he's never been propositioned.

by Anonymousreply 150August 1, 2021 10:05 PM

[Quote] I'm so over outrage and cancel. If his movies are good watch them, I know that I will. Who gives a fuck!

Don't worry, hon. Matt Damon's comments are PR approved. They're edgy enough to get clicks and commentary but not a turn off to his audience. Gammon unite!

by Anonymousreply 151August 1, 2021 10:06 PM

Just imagine the others words he still uses. And people still know you’re gay, Matt.

by Anonymousreply 152August 1, 2021 10:07 PM

If/when I meet a cultural figure who I discover to be loathsome all their shit I own goes flying out the window (books, CDs, films, etc). Side eye to you, Betty Buckley.

I was thinking that too R151. This is all talked about ahead of time.

by Anonymousreply 155August 1, 2021 10:07 PM

I've always heard Boston is the most hateful and trashy place in the US and have found it hard to believe given, well, the South.

But Marky Mark was locked up for violent racist hate crimes, Matt Damon just learned that faggot is a disrespectful word, and Ben Affleck had that thing put on his back...awful.

by Anonymousreply 156August 1, 2021 10:13 PM

I read that gay men were the lowest social weight—it was some sort of scientific measurement in terms of social issues, I can’t remember where I read it but gay men were last. That’s why everyone gets away with gay male homophobia. Nothing will happen to Damion except some publicity.

by Anonymousreply 157August 1, 2021 10:18 PM

I have to admit that I'm shocked by this thread. Most of you bitches only save this kind of outrage for black celebrities who say homophobic stuff.

by Anonymousreply 158August 1, 2021 10:19 PM

Is Damon still with Jennifer Allen? Well-respected publicist known for being able to keep the publicity for her largely male roster innocuous and favorable.

Such a bizarre self inflicted wound and what a nightmare for the publicity machine behind his upcoming Ridley Scott film.

by Anonymousreply 159August 1, 2021 10:20 PM

He sounds so proud of himself, too—as though it’s some great achievement to, you know, NOT use hate speech.

by Anonymousreply 160August 1, 2021 10:20 PM

R158 having to insert race into every thread. Race is always on your mind.

by Anonymousreply 161August 1, 2021 10:22 PM

Nah. Black women have lower social weight than gay men, gay white men anyway. Look at DaBaby. He got blowback from his AIDS and homophobic comments, not from beating black women.

by Anonymousreply 162August 1, 2021 10:23 PM

[Quote] you bitches only save this kind of outrage for black celebrities who say homophobic stuff.

DL doesn't really attend to black celebrities. Do you have someone in mind?

by Anonymousreply 163August 1, 2021 10:24 PM

Black women are celebrated by society. Gay men are hated. They have icons like Beyonce, Rihanna, and a hundred other stars. Gay men have nothing to compare.

by Anonymousreply 164August 1, 2021 10:28 PM

How many black female movie stars can you name? Halle Berry?

by Anonymousreply 165August 1, 2021 10:31 PM

He won't lose one straight male fan over this. Probably won't lose any female fans either. Gays might walk away but he won't care.

by Anonymousreply 166August 1, 2021 10:32 PM

So how pro gay events has he attended over the years like GLAAD awards?

How many GLAAD awards/noms has he received over the years?

Are there E, Extra & E.T. interviews where Damon is saying how wrong it is to mistreat others?

by Anonymousreply 167August 1, 2021 10:32 PM

Exactly. He's been here before. Ellen helped him brush away the "actors should retain mystery around their sexuality" comment.

by Anonymousreply 168August 1, 2021 10:33 PM

Black female movie stars. Viola Davis for starters who has won more Oscars than all openly gay male actors combined.

by Anonymousreply 169August 1, 2021 10:33 PM

Matt Damon was on Will and Grace TWENTY years ago. He’s just now learning the F word isn’t appropriate? I’m assuming he was also a member of society for the last twenty years, no? Give me a break.

by Anonymousreply 170August 1, 2021 10:34 PM

So you can name one...

by Anonymousreply 171August 1, 2021 10:34 PM

Matt Damon just stopped using the word 'months' ago? He ought to be embarrassed, humiliated and ashamed of himself. I'm shocked. I thought he was more educated and enlightened than such behavior.

Disgusting piece of shit. He should have known better. Absolutely no excuse.

by Anonymousreply 172August 1, 2021 10:35 PM

I'm not IMDB. It's ludicrous to suggest being gay is easier then being black.

by Anonymousreply 173August 1, 2021 10:37 PM

“… after one of the four daughters he shares with wife Luciana protested.”

This sentence particle just reads wrong to me. Does he have daughters he doesn’t share with wife Luciana?

by Anonymousreply 174August 1, 2021 10:37 PM

[Quote] I'm not IMDB. It's ludicrous to suggest being gay is easier then being black.

The gay community has mobilized in a way that the black female community hasn't. That's not a controversial statement to make. People in the public eye will get clocked for antigay sentiments while antiblack female statements are ignored.

by Anonymousreply 175August 1, 2021 10:38 PM

No, r174. It's just Matt and his publicists clearing up any mystery about his sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 176August 1, 2021 10:39 PM

[quote]I've always heard Boston is the most hateful and trashy place in the US and have found it hard to believe given, well, the South. But Marky Mark was locked up for violent racist hate crimes,. Ben Affleck had that thing put on his back...awful.

R156. Don't blame Boston. I'm from Boston, and I haven't heard that word said in ages. And these assholes: Damon, Walberg and Affleck haven't lived in Boston in almost 30 years.

by Anonymousreply 177August 1, 2021 10:40 PM

[quote] Does he have daughters he doesn’t share with wife Luciana?

They have a step daughter he often refers to as his daughter.

by Anonymousreply 178August 1, 2021 10:40 PM

Is there even a slur specifically for black females? And I think black females mobilized pretty impressively most of last year in the streets.

by Anonymousreply 181August 1, 2021 10:43 PM

Black women.

by Anonymousreply 183August 1, 2021 10:47 PM

And who were they mobilizing for? Black men.

Look at how DaBaby has lost sponsorship and high profile concert bookings because of his HIV and antigay comments. White gay men in power will pull the rug out from a motherfucker with the quickness. Elton John spoke on it. Madonna and Dionne Warwick also commented. High profile black people don't challenge ignorant rappers in public when they make ignorant and damaging comments about black women.

by Anonymousreply 186August 1, 2021 10:53 PM

I can see this thread slowly becoming about race, as many things do on Datalounge these days. It doesn't need to be compared to anyone else's struggle. What he did, what he shared, was clearly idiotic without any of that.

You're just diluting the argument by trying to throw in more things that won't change the fact that he thought the word was okay when it clearly hasn't been for decades.

by Anonymousreply 187August 1, 2021 10:54 PM

Remember Matt Daddario and his male co-star? Matt was playing a gay character and the co-star called Matt the f-slur, not knowing that Matt was livestreaming at the time. Fragile masculinity at work.

by Anonymousreply 188August 1, 2021 10:55 PM

Struggle. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 189August 1, 2021 10:56 PM

[quote]“The word that my daughter calls the ‘f-slur for a homosexual’ was commonly used when I was a kid, with a different application

Instead of referring to a gay guy as a fag you use fag as a way to insult non gay men by labelling them "gay" because to you a gay guy is: useless, effeminate, stupid, annoying, an obstacle etc etc etc. Either way it just shows that you feel like gay men are subhuman. Anyone who says it is a fucking piece of shit and hates gay men or else thinks gay men are just beneath them.

by Anonymousreply 190August 1, 2021 10:57 PM

Disgusting hetero touting his spawn inadvertently fucks himself in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 191August 1, 2021 11:01 PM

R188 LOL, I watched that happen live! Freeform had them do an apology video but I mean...come on

by Anonymousreply 192August 1, 2021 11:04 PM

One of his daughters at the table was 10 years old. He thought it was okay to tell fagg*t jokes at the table with all his kids there, then mocked them (at first) for their perceived over-sensitivity because they called him on it.

I wish the interviewer would have asked him, "So which daughter wrote you a treatise on the N-word? Or did you stop using that long ago or you never used it? Do you call Jews the k-word? Do you think there's an issue here when you single out this one group for your scorn, or is this so very common among all the people you associate with, even in 2021?"

by Anonymousreply 193August 1, 2021 11:06 PM

Maybe his womanly ass is the cause.

by Anonymousreply 194August 1, 2021 11:08 PM

I wonder if one of his daughters is gay. The fact that she felt compelled to write him a letter about it...

by Anonymousreply 195August 1, 2021 11:08 PM

Throwing four girls, no boys, is kind of faggy.

by Anonymousreply 196August 1, 2021 11:10 PM

R195 She might have been embarrassed. Matt had been filming Thor 4 in Australia a few months ago, and by it seems like there were a lot of dinner parties and mini vacations happening. Maybe she saw nobody else was willing to call him out on it and took it upon herself

by Anonymousreply 197August 1, 2021 11:10 PM

That's doubtful. If non one called him out on it, that teaches the child that he's read the room correctly.

by Anonymousreply 198August 1, 2021 11:15 PM

Most straight people use the word faggot when they think they can't be heard. Pathetic.

Gay men know all these so called allies are not really real.

by Anonymousreply 199August 1, 2021 11:17 PM

R198 Right, which is probably no doubt frustrating to his kid. But if that were me, I’d be more inclined to tell my parent to cut that shit out because 1.) it’s fucking awful and 2.) he’s a big actor in Hollywood in a time where people can’t wait to find faults in celebrities. What if someone had been recording? Of course, he actually told on himself which means he has zero self awareness

by Anonymousreply 200August 1, 2021 11:18 PM

Amanda Knox is a murderous cunt

by Anonymousreply 201August 1, 2021 11:19 PM

Maybe she just wrote him something straightforward like, "Dad, it's not funny when a racist old man calls a black man a n****r, and it's not funny when you call someone a faggot. It's embarrassing. When you do this, it makes me ashamed to be your daughter. It's not funny. It's not even childish. It tells me you are a monster. You need to stop it. It doesn't feel good to be ashamed of your father. It's bad enough that you've got that fat womanly ass. Grow the fuck up and stop being Boston trash, you piece of shit. Love (for now), Stella."

by Anonymousreply 202August 1, 2021 11:22 PM

Hmmm, so not only was he still using the word and thought it was ok to use, he's foolish enough to admit it! His PR people need to be shot. Bit sad when you're daughter is more socially and emotionally aware than you are.

by Anonymousreply 203August 1, 2021 11:24 PM

[Quote] I’d be more inclined to tell my parent to cut that shit out because 1.) it’s fucking awful and 2.) he’s a big actor in Hollywood in a time where people can’t wait to find faults in celebrities.

His daughter is not his publicist. If she took the time to write him, it's heartfelt. She's not thinking about bank account.

by Anonymousreply 204August 1, 2021 11:25 PM

'faggot' should be put in the same category as 'nigger' and never be uttered again.

by Anonymousreply 205August 1, 2021 11:25 PM

This is not true. Not for Matt Damon's audience, which despite the attention his woman ass gets around her, is not a gay audience.

I don't even believe this story about his daughter schooling him on the F-word. He got busted elsewhere and is trying to soften the blow. He's telling you now so he doesn't have to tell you then. But he's already got his excuse in:

[quote]Recognizing the changing shape of media and how quickly his public comments can be turned into headlines, Damon also said that “20 years ago, the best way I can put it is that the journalist listened to the music more than the lyrics [of an interview]. Now your lyrics are getting parsed, to pull them out of context and get the best headline possible. Everyone needs clicks."

So his excuse is going to be people shouldn't listen to the actual words he says, just his tone? Oh, and no-one's really offended, it's just people after clicks. It's exactly the same bullshit line right wingers come out with.

'Behind the Candelabra' Interview: Matt Damon Says 'Candelabra' a 'Dream Role'

[quote] "I've always dreamed of playing a sad sissy bottom bitch for a TV movie," Damon said. "If I don't win an Emmy, I'm going to murder my faggot agent."

by Anonymousreply 279August 2, 2021 1:29 AM

I believe the last time he addressed gay issues was in 2015. The interview started out promisingly-

[quote] “When Ben and I first came on the scene, there were rumors that we were gay because it was two guys who wrote a script together,” he said. “I know. It’s just like any piece of gossip … and it put us in a weird position of having to answer, you know what I mean? Which was then really deeply offensive. I don’t want to, like, imply it’s some sort of disease — then it’s like I’m throwing my friends under the bus.”

That's fine, Matt! You can stop there!

[quote] That revelation was made while Damon, who has four kids with wife Luciana Barroso, said he believes openly gay actors have a more difficult time in Hollywood.

[quote] “I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly,” he said. “But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you, period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”

[quote]Incidentally, this isn’t the first time Damon has come under fire this month. The gay remarks came soon after he was criticized for “Damonsplaining” diversity in an episode of HBO’s “Project Greenlight.” The actor has since apologized for saying that “when we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show.”

While I’m certainly surprised at Damon’s stupidity, I have to say I’m not offended by his private use of the word. What’s more offensive is the use of ‘queer’ by virtually everyone in media and academia, especially straight people.

by Anonymousreply 307August 2, 2021 2:24 AM

[quote] [R300] speaks as if this dude is 18 years old. He’s pushing 60 and stopped using gay slurs about a week ago.

He just turned 50, ya stupid f-word.

by Anonymousreply 308August 2, 2021 2:25 AM

[quote]Agreed. Thor 4 is supposed to be the most gay-inclusive instalment yet.

So in Thor: Love and Thunder a gay character will be treated the same as a straight character? Be allowed to have a love interest? Be allowed to say they're gay? Be allowed to OMG kiss them on screen?

So while I agree he needs to be cut out of it I doubt the film will be as gay-inclusive as Disney will pretend it will be. Remember when they made a big deal about a gay character who was on screen for five seconds, that no one had ever seen before, in a minor scene saying he had a husband? Then we never heard from them or saw them again?

If we, as gay people, keep settling for less than what we want we'll continue to get it.

by Anonymousreply 309August 2, 2021 2:26 AM

I know R307. Makes me wonder if the f-word will soon join the q-word and become acceptable.

[quote]If you care about Thor/Disney movies, you’re already settling for way less than you should, as an adult.

I've never been partial to Thor movies but it's so incredibly stupid when one thinks all should watch as an adult are dramas and real crime stories. If people want to watch a man fly around with a hammer and wings on his head or whatever he does and it's not hurting anyone then why should I care? Why should you care? Beats the hell out of watching Law & Order SVU for the 34th season.

Matt Damon telling "fag" jokes in 2021 in front of his child is a bit more harmful.

by Anonymousreply 316August 2, 2021 2:33 AM

So it's not like he only used it in front of his family. We can safely assume that his friends all use the f word too. And most likely his wife too.

Does anyone think that some homophobic bombshell is about to blow wide open about him, even bigger than this story? I see no other reason to put out such a stupid thing about his daughter educating him not to use the f slur to a 50 yo. Plus he’s been mentioning his wife and kids a lot and he’s got his shitty movie to promote.

by Anonymousreply 342August 2, 2021 3:15 AM

He does have this rightwing movie coming out.

by Anonymousreply 343August 2, 2021 3:18 AM

I am coming around to the idea that he is gay. He never pinged to me and neither did Ben.

Oh but Matt, you are an idiot and are revealing your shitty nature and your GAYness.

And please leave your daughter EST out of it please. So tacky.

by Anonymousreply 344August 2, 2021 3:18 AM

Maybe he was so out of touch that he thought this would be OK. He lives in a bubble, people tell him yes most of the time, etc.

by Anonymousreply 345August 2, 2021 3:19 AM

Damon is 50 yo. He's worked with gays in Hollywood for 30 years . He's played gay for crissakes. But only now. Fuck him . Fuck him in his fat womanly arse.

Matt Damon looks like a bloated alcoholic at OP's photo. His wife was a bartender when they met.

[quote] His wife was a bartender when they met.

by Anonymousreply 349August 2, 2021 4:12 AM

Leave the wife alone. She's probably the one who taught the kids any manners and sense. Her only fault ats this point is marrying some bigoted homophobic AWT.

by Anonymousreply 350August 2, 2021 4:14 AM

After approximately 105 years of movie stars, audiences still think they ‘know’ actors and actresses, and most people know jack shit about what specific actors are really like and base their opinions on their own projection onto them—and buying into the archetype crafted by the actors’s team.

All actors are arrogant, and those with the longest careers tend to be extremely aggressive and ambitious, and also listen to—and follow—the advice their highly compensated team—particularly PR team—gives them. There are rarely any accidents in what we see and read about top stars, and rarely any unscripted moments.

Moviemaking—film acting—is a dreadfully boring profession. It’s highly technical—especially today—very monotonous, and there is very little creative fulfillment. To want to stay at the top of that game, year after year, says a lot about stars like Damon, and none of it positive. They are highly compensated Id-creatures who will do what it takes to maintain their position…so they can keep doing the same highly compensated job over and over again, year after year. That includes a lot of “pretending” for the public. I don’t know what Damon’s objective was with this comment—but I know he has one.

Horseshit. If that was true, she couldn’t correct her husband and explain to him why that word is awful and hateful? The daughter probably learned her manners in school, thank goodness. Sad to see a kid has to teach a 50 year old man.

by Anonymousreply 357August 2, 2021 5:43 AM

They covered his lard with tactical vests for the Bourne movies - it was the classic Steven Segal trick.

You still had to watch him do the weeblewobble scurry because it was an action movie.

His image mirrors his audience - white guys gone to seed who can't use their favorite words anymore.

by Anonymousreply 358August 2, 2021 6:42 AM

If you zoom in on the picture OP posted, you can just see the Boston white trash oozing out of him.

by Anonymousreply 359August 2, 2021 6:52 AM

R346 That's exactly the thing - he's a 50 year old man, with a career in Hollywood of all places, who just 'now' figured out the truth regarding this word? C'mon now...I don't care how much in a "bubble" Hollywood stars are, this is a whole new level of ignorance.

Considering the world we all live in, if you've been using this word for nearly 50 years, you know what it means.

I hope they close down his zoo for this!

by Anonymousreply 361August 2, 2021 10:21 AM

Interesting he and Mark Wahlberg share their worst traits considering that both had gay pinup appeal when they were young and both have aged into ugly old men.

Marky Mark now looks like the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer from SNL and Damon looks downsy with a doughboy body.

You always hear these stories about actors staying closeted because Hollywood is secretly still anti gay or homophobic or whatever you want to call it.

And you think, at least I do, of all places, how can that be?

And then truths like this seep out. I expected better from Matt Damon, somehow. Don't know why. He's low end from some rough part of Boston. I guess wealth and creativity didn't improve him.

by Anonymousreply 367August 2, 2021 12:00 PM

Fag stopped being acceptable in casual conversation at least 25 years ago.

Fuck this Boston trash.

by Anonymousreply 368August 2, 2021 12:03 PM

[quote]‘Fag’ has been a no go for nearly thirty years.

Closer to 40, I would say. There's an episode of "WKRP" from 1978 which has a plot where Les Nessman is accused of being gay by football players who said they were uncomfortable with him in the locker room. At the end, Herb says, "Les, nobody cares that you're a fag!" and they had to dub "fag" out and replace it with "nobody cares that you're gay" in subsequent showings because of complaints. You can still read Herb's lips, though.

I get that Damon was using it casually like he did in high school but even the dimmest bulb would have known it was a slur by the time of the campaign to end the use of "that's so gay" in 2009 or so.

by Anonymousreply 369August 2, 2021 12:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 370August 2, 2021 12:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 372August 2, 2021 12:32 PM

[quote]If you think it's a simple race thing, you're missing the point. Damon claims to have learned the error of his ways.

Learned the error of his ways just a few months ago at 50 years old and 25 years of working with gays in the industry???? Yeah, I’m sure that’s it.🙄 And you know damn well white celebs get away with homophobia more compared to black celebs. Eminem, Paris Hilton, Jason Statham and several others have all said the f-slur and their careers never suffered.

R375 In America, our media isn’t saying shit. American media tends to always pick and choose when it comes to their favorites and Matty boy has always been a media darling over here for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 375August 2, 2021 12:43 PM

All those years of Matt working with his friend/business partner Harvey Weinstein and Harvey never told him that was unacceptable behavior?

by Anonymousreply 376August 2, 2021 12:44 PM

R376 What’s really sad is even Harvey had enough sense to never say that word publicly or admit to using it and even went to the GLAAD Awards one year.

Matt went to Harvard and still came out stupid as shit. Amazing.

I corrected it in the next post. You must be stupid as shit to have missed it.

Does Liam Neeson still have a career after saying he wanted to kill any black man who crossed his path? Yes, he does. Matt's comment falls within the same "Wasn't I awful? And look how I recognize I was awful! Go see my movie!" category.

I have (obviously) not followed Matt Damon's life or career closely, but based on what I do know about him, I've always thought he was a basically nice guy, whereas Affleck was clearly a fuck-up. Sorry to read all of this about Damon, and add me to the list of people who CANNOT understand why he himself told the press that he has only very recently started using that anti-gay slur, and only because his daughter called him out for it. The only explanation I can think of is that maybe he sincerely thought of it as a teaching moment, but even if that's true, it seems very foolish on his part.

by Anonymousreply 434August 2, 2021 11:45 PM

His statement to Variety:

Matt Damon is insisting that he has never used the “f-slur” following backlash from a recent interview.

In an article posted by the U.K.’s Sunday Times, the “Stillwater” star was quoted saying he had stopped using the offensive term “months ago” when his daughter wrote him a “treatise” on “how that word is dangerous.”

But in a statement to Variety, Damon said that he has never used the word in his “personal life” and does not “use slurs of any kind.” He also affirmed that he understands why the interview “led many to assume the worst.”

“During a recent interview, I recalled a discussion I had with my daughter where I attempted to contextualize for her the progress that has been made – though by no means completed – since I was growing up in Boston and, as a child, heard the word ‘f*g’ used on the street before I knew what it even referred to,” Damon said in the statement. “I explained that that word was used constantly and casually and was even a line of dialogue in a movie of mine as recently as 2003; she in turn expressed incredulity that there could ever have been a time where that word was used unthinkingly. To my admiration and pride, she was extremely articulate about the extent to which that word would have been painful to someone in the LGBTQ+ community regardless of how culturally normalized it was. I not only agreed with her but thrilled at her passion, values and desire for social justice.

“I have never called anyone ‘f****t’ in my personal life and this conversation with my daughter was not a personal awakening. I do not use slurs of any kind,” Damon continued. “I have learned that eradicating prejudice requires active movement toward justice rather than finding passive comfort in imagining myself ‘one of the good guys’. And given that open hostility against the LGBTQ+ community is still not uncommon, I understand why my statement led many to assume the worst. To be as clear as I can be, I stand with the LGBTQ+ community.”

He shared the information to brag about his thoughtful daughter and his own "growth."

by Anonymousreply 463August 4, 2021 9:42 PM

It's some form of spin control...I bet someone was going to expose him and he and his people took action.

by Anonymousreply 464August 4, 2021 11:13 PM

What were they going to expose?

by Anonymousreply 465August 4, 2021 11:21 PM

I believe the homophobic remarks R465.

by Anonymousreply 466August 4, 2021 11:30 PM

As in he was throwing the f-slurs around on set or something?

by Anonymousreply 467August 4, 2021 11:56 PM

Yeah, I don't think it is and I'm not sure why anyone thinks he was pushing this as a way to get ahead of something.

It Matt Damon was running around set calling someone this, or referring to someone as this, that would have been spoken about and reported within 5 seconds if the person had beef with Damon. There are very few ways to get out "ahead" of a story in 2021. Back in the day, someone here was reporting on the Grey's Anatomy on set blowup within minutes while it was happening. People love to bring down a golden boy and would have zero problems doing it to Damon.

The simplest answer is that he was promoting his new film where he plays a Trump supporter and someone wrongly advised him that this would be a good story to reach "the other side of America" he's been running around and talking to people about. See, he's just like them! He understands them! He's might be a Hollywood star but he gets what it's like to live in the real world!

It took a long time for Dustin Hoffman's antics to get called out.

And just speaking of the f-slur alone: We only knew about Daddario's co-star calling him that while they were on set because of the livestream.

by Anonymousreply 469August 5, 2021 12:18 AM

His daughter shouldn't have to write a treatise. He is lying about all of it. He was caught saying something stupid and he's backtracking IMO. And if he's doing this to reach out to the rednecks as some form of a "teaching moment", I will despise him even more.

by Anonymousreply 470August 5, 2021 12:22 AM

[quote]It took a long time for Dustin Hoffman's antics to get called out.

Dustin Hoffman's sexual harassment stories came out when a victim came forward in 2017 and wrote an essay about what happened to her on set in 1985. Then the rest of the victims spoke up. (It's also important to note that the victim got her story published by The Hollywood Reporter because she is an established author.)

Dustin Hoffman didn't "get out ahead" of that story. He responded to what was already stated three days later after the first accuser's story went viral and he was forced to.

[quote]And just speaking of the f-slur alone: We only knew about Daddario's co-star calling him that while they were on set because of the live stream.

They didn't have a problem with the word between the two of them.

Getting out ahead of the story implies that someone would have had a problem with it privately and they were forced to respond to it publicly before the public heard the victim's story.

That was just them, being stupid, and then everyone being forced to respond to it since it was live and the public was the one who had the problem with the word being used.

by Anonymousreply 471August 5, 2021 12:33 AM

[Quote] They didn't have a problem with the word between the two of them.

What about their co-workers? You think that crew has no gay people?

by Anonymousreply 472August 5, 2021 12:34 AM

[quote]What about their co-workers? You think that crew has no gay people?

You're going off on a tangent here and trying to make a point that's not being made or argued.

I said it's unlikely Damon was getting ahead of a story because it's not that possible in today's day and age when, if someone has a problem with something, they can tweet about it, Instagram about it, write a medium post about it, do a TikTok about it, etc. The Armie Hammer thing is the most recent example I can think of. Add into that anytime someone has a problem with a celeb doing anything. The person that has the issue is usually, these days, the one that comes forward first.

Damon isn't responding to a story that's going to come out about him privately.

There was no story for the Shadowhunter actors to get ahead of. The story played out in real time.

Now if you want to go there and talk about their co-workers and gay people on set, etc? The sad reality is if those two were saying things on set that involved that word and someone overheard it and didn't speak up then they probably didn't care enough about the word to do something. That's sad but that's also not abnormal on a set. That's a whole other topic.

by Anonymousreply 473August 5, 2021 12:41 AM

The point is that Brit actor felt comfortable enough to throw around the f-slur on a Hollywood set. You can bet your ass Matt Damon would feel comfortable doing so as well.

by Anonymousreply 474August 5, 2021 12:43 AM

[Quote] if someone has a problem with something, they can tweet about it, Instagram about it, write a medium post about it, do a TikTok about it, etc.

You think people are just going to jeopardize their job like that?

The John Boyega walkout led to a post on Deuxmoi but the person who posted it no doubt knew that they were losing their job anyway.

by Anonymousreply 475August 5, 2021 12:44 AM

[quote]You think people are just going to jeopardize their job like that?

Oh, dear.

It's like I'm going from point A to B and you're everywhere else in between.

He's not getting ahead of a story. That was my point.

You keep bringing up other weird stuff and talking about some cancelled CW? show? And me saying, that's a whole other topic and people on set wouldn't say anything is exactly what you're saying. I know this is an international website so I'm going to assume you're like German or something?

Have a lovely night or day or whatever time it is wherever you are.

This is what you typed:

[Quote] It Matt Damon was running around set calling someone this, or referring to someone as this, that would have been spoken about and reported within 5 seconds if the person had beef with Damon.

I responded that a young Brit actor was doing the very same thing - throwing f-slurs while on set. No one reported him for it. He was only exposed because he used the f-slur while his co-star was livestreaming.

by Anonymousreply 477August 5, 2021 1:16 AM

Further, any set that Matt Damon is on, he's the most important person. That gives him power to behave in ways that would get other people fired.

by Anonymousreply 478August 5, 2021 1:18 AM

R476 You're an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 479August 5, 2021 6:31 AM

Damon's 'clarification; is very oddly phrased, like it's being technically true, while skirting round something significant. 'I've never used a gay slur personally' - so he quoted someone else? was using it in retelling jokes he'd been told?

by Anonymousreply 480August 5, 2021 8:10 AM

R477 which young Brit actor was that? It’s exceptionally rare for Brits to use that f-word. It’s mainly an American thing.

by Anonymousreply 481August 5, 2021 1:14 PM

In my experience, it's not exceptional for Brits to use that word. The actor was Dominic Sherwood, r481.

Does anyone remember a few weeks ago when Zayn Malik was in the news for squaring up to someone on the street while shirtless. The other guy called Zayn a faggot. The other guy is apparently gay, lol.

by Anonymousreply 483August 5, 2021 1:24 PM

Damon must have stolen the script for Good Will Hunting. It's a tad fishy they've never been able to repeat that success, instead acting in a ton of movies with shitty screenplays when they have an Oscar for writing

by Anonymousreply 484August 5, 2021 1:43 PM

[quote] Damon must have stolen the script for Good Will Hunting

He didn’t steal it. I just made it what it is.

by Anonymousreply 485August 5, 2021 4:47 PM

R482 ah, thanks for answering, I hadn’t heard that. I’m British and really can’t think of a time I’ve ever heard the word “fag” used as a gay slur. Here fag means cigarette.

by Anonymousreply 486August 5, 2021 6:29 PM

When I've encountered Brits saying it, it's usually the whole word (faggot) and used similarly to "that's so gay," i.e. a byword for bad/shit/disappointing. For example, one "lad" asks his friend to use his phone and when it's not forthcoming he says "Don't be a faggot, give it me."

by Anonymousreply 487August 5, 2021 6:43 PM

R487 I haven't encountered that.

by Anonymousreply 488August 5, 2021 7:04 PM

Fag and faggot are slurs, full stop, no equivocations. GTFO with your rationalizations. I don't care if 90% of people say it where you're from, it's a slur, it's the definition of homophobic, and there is no justifying or defending it. If you're trying to do those things, YOU are a homophobe and/or a self-loathing gay person.

by Anonymousreply 489August 5, 2021 7:07 PM

I don't think Matt reads DL.

by Anonymousreply 490August 5, 2021 7:08 PM

Matt said: "I have never called anyone ‘f****t’ in my personal life and this conversation with my daughter was not a personal awakening."

IndieWire says:

[quote] Everyone knows Matt Damon has used "the f slur." To stop the backlash, all he needed to do was admit it and say he was sorry.

But how do they know he said it? This from a 2007 GQ interview:

[quote] He also says it in this GQ interview from 2007, while discussing what he and Affleck did with the “Good Will Hunting” money. “We knew it would just be so gay to get the same car. And our friends were making fun of us. Like, ‘You fags, what are you doing,” Damon said.

Hey, whatever. But it is interesting how squirrely he is and he's not even a politician.

by Anonymousreply 492August 5, 2021 10:17 PM

Thanks, r491. Now where is that Uncle Tom who was calling us all stupid?

by Anonymousreply 493August 5, 2021 10:19 PM

Can I still say pillow-biter? What about butt-pirate?

by Anonymousreply 494August 6, 2021 3:45 AM

Ban his “Will & Grace” episode from the airwaves! Lock it away for 25 years.

by Anonymousreply 495August 6, 2021 5:16 AM

The Gay Mafia’s coming for you, Matt. Fuck their faggot asses. They’re all going to hell anyway.

by Anonymousreply 496August 6, 2021 3:10 PM

I stand with the LGBTQ+ community!

(But when I do, I stand in the back because I don't want a bunch of fags staring at my ass.)

Why would we stare at your ass, Matt?

by Anonymousreply 498August 6, 2021 4:01 PM

Matt Damon's behavior reminds me of that other CLOSETED HOMO with his endless homophobic remarks- Alec Baldwin.

by Anonymousreply 502August 9, 2021 1:24 PM

My mistake was thinking that he was a role model and a hero when...he wasn't really. Fake as his Chiclet teefus.

by Anonymousreply 503August 9, 2021 11:11 PM

A 50-year-old straight "liberal" man in 2021 use the word "faggot" to those around him and it's his daughter who put the smelling salts underneath his nose?

Fuck off Matt Damon. You really need to shut your mouth.

by Anonymousreply 504August 9, 2021 11:13 PM

[Quote] My mistake was thinking that he was a role model and a hero when...he wasn't really.

He wears make up for a living. What were you sniffing?

by Anonymousreply 505August 10, 2021 2:41 AM

R504- Yes Matt Damon and his BOYFRIEND Ben Affleck are both STRAIGHT.

by Anonymousreply 506August 10, 2021 12:03 PM

We will never see him help Cher recreate the beloved fatso skits.

I'm just picturing Matt waddling around in a double vent suit with saddlebag ass......cher confusing him with Chaz...hiding fat foods from craft table.

Poor fella.

by Anonymousreply 507August 10, 2021 12:28 PM

He bent over for Gus Van Sant, I truly believe it. Ben too. Ben who tried to hide his family's slave owning past. He used his clout as an A-list movie star to get the episode quashed when all he had to do was let it air and make a statement about it and move on. But he chose to use his muscle to shut it down. Privilege at its worst.

I'd like to think that people who make it in Hollywood don't go there with the intention of BSing people and becoming douchebags, but it happens to so many of them...why?
