I have been supportive of Biles' decisions and appalled by all the criticism of her choosing to withdraw from her events due to the risk gymnasts take if they are not mentally sharp. But the commentators and fans on Twitter need to stop claiming that the women winning the events are only doing so due to Biles withdrawing and that she could just show up today and sweep the golds.

They are trying to have it both ways. Either Biles has the twisties and unable to compete to the best of her abilities or she's actually OK and capable of just showing up and winning gold. Which is it?

R20 in reality, Simone was very defeatible. Suni had already beaten her at Trials in the AA and for the Event Finals, she only realistically would probably have won Vault. I know she was a favorite for Floor, however, the fact that she can never stay in bounds, and with the problems ahtletes are having with this floor, including Simone, I don't think she would have taken it.

She barely came in 2nd on FX in prelims with an .8 deduction on her 3 pass(I think it was .8, no matter what is was a HUGE deduction)! If she stayed in bounds, she would have won no doubt. The code is to blame for her being bouncy and still being able to win. She said that it's easier on her body to try not to stick and bounce or take steps... I wish they would allow them to lunge again

R24 I have long maintained that the code has worked far too favorably for Simone. It makes absolutey no sense that they didn't change the deductions when they changed the scoring system. The fact that an out of bounds is still a 1/10 deduction, the same deduction it was 40 years ago, is ridiculuos.

Back in the 80s/90s, a 1/10 deduction, step out of bounds, ruined your chances as a medal. Now a gymnast, like Simone, has no incentive to give AF about staying in bounds or not falling off a piece of equipment because they can still win an Olympic medal.

An out of bounds or fall should be deducted as a percentage of the athletes score. Each out of bounds? 10%.. Each fall? 30%.

Doing something like that, Simone probably would never have won all the titles she was able to get.

I always hated that the USA's best finishes were(in the beginning) on home turf especially when they were clearly the best team there(especially in Atlanta). They did MUCH better than expected in Anaheim after all their injuries but they did have a little help with Romania not being the team they became in 04.
