We are still a few hundred posts away for this OP, you are very forward thinking.

The whole thing is a great metaphor for American society. Rotting away from neglect and an unwillingness to spend money for public good while only looking out for one's own interests.

by Anonymousreply 11July 2, 2021 9:48 PM

did they get the animals out yet? What the fuck are these rescue team doing?

by Anonymousreply 12July 2, 2021 10:49 PM

No cats! no Justice!

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2021 10:52 PM

Ok, I love my pet but lets be real here. They arent getting the damn cats out. They might not even be alive after 8+ days or might have crawled to another area. If they dont know where they are, how are they going to go searching for them in a flimsy, ready to collapse building.

Second, there are one hundred plus people rotting under the rubble. They arent going to stop digging them out, or risk the lives of first responders. Responders who are working 12 hr shifts & are on the brink of having a breakdown for Mr Floofychops who is probably dead in a closet somewhere.

Lastly, pets are not considered the same level as people. They are property. You can buy a cat in a pet store. So no, sorry, they arent getting them out.

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2021 10:57 PM

r12, they're working hard to add at least two more victims to the collapse's death toll... Coco and Mia. It's almost like the authorities think they're actually going to SCORE POINTS by allowing Coco and Mia to die, rather than make even the TINIEST effort to save the disaster's most innocent and blameless victims likely to actually still be alive right this minute.

If nothing else, they should ask the rescue workers for volunteers, and allow them to do it for the sake of morale. After a week of excavating bodies, we NEED to give them at least ONE opportunity to go home feeling like they saved a life, instead of merely recovering bodies of the dead. Handing Coco and/or Mia to their companions and watching the happy reunion would go a really, REALLY long way towards allowing the rescuers themselves to process and come to terms with the past week.

What we really need is for one of the grieving family members to go on TV and say, "My Mom/Dad/{etc} is still under there... and if they could make their voices heard, they'd be screaming, 'Save those poor cats while you still can!'"

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2021 11:05 PM

[quote] They arent getting the damn cats out. They might not even be alive after 8+ days or might have crawled to another area. If they dont know where they are, how are they going to go searching for them in a flimsy, ready to collapse building.

Exactly right. The cat obsessives on these threads can fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2021 11:23 PM

R15 - your heart is in the right place but they do not save cats before people. If they rescued a cat (considered *property*) while it was still officially a search & rescue mission, everyone would be screaming why they arent looking harder for human survivors. They just pulled a 7 yr old daughter of a fireman out. They arent concerned for Coco.

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2021 11:24 PM

[quote] why they arent looking harder for human survivors.

Because there aren’t any. Let’s get real. No more humans are coming out of the rubble alive.

by Anonymousreply 18July 2, 2021 11:29 PM

I’m in the UK, and while I was aware of this story and had been keeping abreast, I hadn’t read much attention beyond superficial details. That is until I read the last thread and the many NYT links.

And, God - this is all so fucking awful. Sadness upon sadness.

by Anonymousreply 19July 2, 2021 11:30 PM

the reason why they are not saving those cats/animals is because there is NO RESCUE effort. It is all BULLSHIT. The people there are PISSED. They should have rescued the animals already.

by Anonymousreply 25July 3, 2021 12:16 AM

I have to say, they don't really seem to have been doing what I would consider an all out effort on this, and of course, cats aside, now it's too late. I'm not there, but I get a lackadaisical vibe. This is a zillionth (I am so technical) of the scale of the WTC and the haven't made a dent. I do wonder at this point if they are just waiting for the storm to hit and sort it out for them.

by Anonymousreply 26July 3, 2021 12:24 AM

the team there is trying to destroy the evidence. They are not there to RESCUE animals or people. It is a ruse. Why aren't there people trapped up there? Oh because they walked out. They could have gotten these animals out of there. They are blocking trained rescue teams from doing search and rescue. BTW, they know where these animals are.

by Anonymousreply 27July 3, 2021 12:29 AM

The cats will be fine. They have the dead people to eat until they get rescued.

[quote]Six cases of Covid-19 have developed among the search and rescue operations at Surfside, Florida, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Alan Cominsky.

[quote]At a news conference Friday evening, Cominsky said that the outbreak was among one of the teams from Florida.

[quote]"So we do have our medical procedures in place, you know, unfortunately, this is another challenge but something that we've been dealing with for over the past year," Cominsky said.

[quote]The task force that contained the positive Covid-19 has been "demobilized," according to the chief, and protocols, including isolation, were put into place.

[quote]Less than a quarter of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s 2,000 firefighters and EMS squads have gotten the vaccine — 458 people in an agency of about 2,000 people, as of Friday.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will not attend the rally due to the ongoing search for survivors after the collapse of a 12-story condominium building in the town of Surfside on June 24. Trump reportedly advised the Republican governor to prioritize the rescue effort over his event.

DeSantis' Press Secretary Christina Pushaw confirmed that the governor will not be attending the rally in a statement.

"We can confirm that the Governor will not attend the rally in Sarasota. He spoke with President Trump, who agreed that this was the right decision, as the Governor's duty is to be in Surfside making sure the families and community have what they need in the aftermath of the tragic building collapse," she said.

Pushaw added: "Governor DeSantis would have gone to this event in normal circumstances. He is sure the rally will draw a big crowd on this holiday weekend, as many Floridians are excited to attend."

I thought similarly about 9-11, but apparently once pulverized, dead bodies don’t produce that overwhelming rotting smell. Morbid, but true.

I knew someone who was in NY shortly after 9/11 when the rubble was still being cleared out and he said the area had an electrical smell to it.

by Anonymousreply 93July 4, 2021 5:16 PM

If they are buried under piles of rubble, there may be a modest preservation going on. Oxygen and exposure to air and elements expedites decomposition. There isn't much light, air or O2 reaching the bodies under all of that right now.

Israeli Defense Forces Commander Elad Edri, who is on the ground in Surfside as part of the Israeli government’s support to the rescue effort, said that rescuers face several dangers like fires and structure instability, but that they also face the daunting task of having to find human remains in the rubble.

“They experience a heavy, heavy smell of bodies and to do the actions when you have that smell on the site is a very tough challenge,” said Col. Edri.

Agreed. I lived in the West Village, and all I can recall in terms of smell is just burning. I don't even know what an "electrical smell" would smell like. But more than the smell, which lasted for weeks, was the dust on the subway trains (specifically the E and 1/9) once they started running again. And that plume of smoke that hung over the city for what felt like an eternity. Terrible times.

by Anonymousreply 107July 5, 2021 3:44 AM

After this horrific collapse, I've reconsidered buying a property in a building like this....there are too many co-owners that can screw things up. Champlain had a $15 million price tag on the repairs which came out to around $100,000 per unit owner. No one could agree on how much it would cost and many simply couldn't afford the repair assessment.

At least when you own a single-family home, your personal safety isn't tethered to their problems or incompetence.
