I hope Gramps loses in the first week of Wimbledon. Putting that into the universe now!

by Anonymousreply 4June 14, 2021 8:26 PM

I watched some of Halle today. Ivashka looked pretty good against Fed, who came out slow in the first set but managed his serve and pounced in the first set tiebreak. In the second set they were on serve until Fed broke at 6-5 to take the set 7-5. Ivashka took a set off Nadal in Barcelona this year and is playing well.

It's striking how different the movement is on grass. Sinner lost today and that's no doubt because of this fact. Many players took a while to acclimate to grass, even Pete Sampras who wound up owning Wimbledon for 7 out of 8 years from 1993 to 2001.

by Anonymousreply 5June 15, 2021 12:45 AM

I miss Sampras. I miss seeing the serve and volley style in general.

After my dear Rafa lost at the French, I'm abstaining for tennis and tennis threads.

Adieu sweet Rafa. Adieu sweet friends on DL...

by Anonymousreply 8June 15, 2021 5:49 AM

there is 1 big missing item from Djokovic's resume...a singles Olympic gold medal. Djokovic has a bronze while Federer has a silver and Nadal has a gold

Nadal and Federer also have gold medals in doubles while Djokovic has no doubles medals

of course Djokovic has as good of a shot as anyone to get a gold this year

by Anonymousreply 9June 15, 2021 9:26 AM

Roberto Bautista Agut will skip the Olympics.

Rune got a 1500 euro fine from ATP for his remarks during the match at Biella Challenger.

by Anonymousreply 10June 15, 2021 10:09 AM

The Ols - still in doubt that they will happen?

by Anonymousreply 11June 15, 2021 10:22 AM

R8, perhaps you can come back after the grass season is over. (DL is a star, and nobody leaves a star!)

by Anonymousreply 12June 15, 2021 10:39 AM

Misery has a weird record as the only man to have been simultaneously World number 1, and a reigning Olympic, Slam and Masters (several of those) titleholder.

Has Alex de Minaur gotten even smaller? He looks like a high schooler. Getting rid of that horrible little Hitler moustache is a huge improvement.

by Anonymousreply 15June 15, 2021 1:40 PM

Lopez looked great yesterday. His tennis whites made his legs look even more delicious.

Med lost 1st round at Halle.

by Anonymousreply 16June 15, 2021 1:45 PM

R10 Not much money, but i suppose he benefited from being an (overhyped) nobody on a challenger. On an atp match on tv i think it could have damage his career big time.

And fortunately for him, he dealt with the incident way better than his mother. If he had the same beligerent attitude than her mother this could have end growing way more

by Anonymousreply 17June 15, 2021 2:01 PM

Jan-Lennard Struff beat top seed Medvedev in Halle

by Anonymousreply 18June 15, 2021 2:02 PM

Medvedev is the Osaka of atp (but without the 4 GS)

by Anonymousreply 19June 15, 2021 2:06 PM
Not much money, but i suppose he benefited from being an (overhyped) nobody on a challenger

Apparently the decision took into account the fact that Rune has already apologised for his remarks and he has no previous history of wrongdoing on the Tour.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 20June 15, 2021 2:14 PM

He has no history of wrongdoing because he is a kid.

This is the first year he is really playing the circuit

Anyway, it's not surprising and i think it'll happen more times (not necesarily homophobic slurs) because a lot of juniors have incredibly big egos and very little control over their emotions

Shapo is a player that could be amazing with Nole or Rafa's mentality and game plan

by Anonymousreply 34June 15, 2021 9:04 PM

In the minority here but it does my heart good to see Misery back on the court. I’m happy for him.

by Anonymousreply 38June 15, 2021 10:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 45June 15, 2021 10:47 PM

Wow that haircut on Shapo is really flattering. I've always found him homely at best.

by Anonymousreply 46June 15, 2021 11:22 PM

I've always suspected that Shapo was going to mature in to handsome man. His girlfriend has likely taken over his grooming decisions, as is often the case. Thankfully she has pulled him out of his teenage hoser look.

by Anonymousreply 50June 16, 2021 2:58 AM

Judy, are you once again referring to your four biggest orgasms ever, all of which you had when screwing Andy? And is Jamie a doubles specialist because you would only ever let him do you (a DP) when Andy was also present?

by Anonymousreply 51June 16, 2021 5:55 AM

Is Jamie Murray doubles specialist?

by Anonymousreply 52June 16, 2021 5:57 AM

Carlos Alcaraz received a wc to Wimbledon's MD.

Quite surprising because wc on GS lately are for local players (and some for local players of the other GS).

Of course he is a rising star and right now he is number 78 (so MD position) but when he was questioned after losing RG he said his next match would be the Wimbledon qualifications, so this was not expected

by Anonymousreply 53June 16, 2021 11:40 AM

Jeez, Granny Vee's ranking has fallen so low she needed a wildcard to play Wimbledon. I can't believe she doesn't get direct entry anymore.

by Anonymousreply 54June 16, 2021 11:47 AM

R54 I don't think she needs a wc because her ranking went down after they close the entry list.

The wc for the md on the men's draw are: Andy Murray, Jack Draper, Jay Clarke, Liam Broady and Carlos Alcaraz (i think there are three more to be announced)

by Anonymousreply 55June 16, 2021 12:51 PM

R55, there is an article on the BBC site which says Granny Vee and Misery have both been given wildcards.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 56June 16, 2021 1:12 PM

I would love it if the 40-year-old Granny with a WC entry rediscovers her form for one last magical run to another title at Wimbledon.

by Anonymousreply 57June 16, 2021 1:26 PM

You might as well wish for her to win Miss America this year, too, R57. It ain't happenin'.

by Anonymousreply 58June 16, 2021 1:38 PM

R58, how many people predicted that the Czech unknown was going to win Garros? Anything can happen.

by Anonymousreply 59June 16, 2021 1:44 PM

R59, the "Czech unknown" is a fairly accomplished doubles player and isn't 153 years old.

by Anonymousreply 60June 16, 2021 1:46 PM

And Roland Garros is way more unpredictable than Wimbledon right now.

Without Halep, everything relied in Barty (injured), Muguruza (played like crap in first round) and Swiatek (had a bad day un quarterfinals).

Generally Wimbledon winners are top players.

Of course Venus is a great grass court player but she is playing really bad lately

I'm a Fed fan, but given he'll turn 40 in August, these young guys like Felix SHOULD be beating him. They should be beating Nadal and Djokovic, too. Too bad Tsitsy lost it in the RG final. He's so close to there. I hope he has a great Wimbledon, but with the loss of his grandmother I'm not sure how that will affect him.

by Anonymousreply 70June 16, 2021 4:26 PM

Felix. Stud.

by Anonymousreply 71June 16, 2021 4:27 PM

The AELTC must now be busy trying to figure out how to 'adjust' the draw for Gramps so that he gets only pigeons and journeymen until the quarter final.

by Anonymousreply 72June 16, 2021 4:33 PM

Who is journeymen who will play at Wimbledon?

by Anonymousreply 73June 16, 2021 4:37 PM

R73 who? There are several. Just look at most unranked players over the age of 30.

by Anonymousreply 74June 16, 2021 4:43 PM

By unranked I meant unseeded in the draw.

by Anonymousreply 75June 16, 2021 4:43 PM

I don't think the grandma will have much effect, he was just using that as an excuse. His own father didn't even look sad in the stands.

by Anonymousreply 76June 16, 2021 5:05 PM

I wonder if Federer is responsible for the extension of ranking freeze. Otherwise he definitely won't be seeded at Wimbledon and the Olympics. Just retire already. You have no chance of winning.

by Anonymousreply 77June 16, 2021 5:27 PM

I don't know why people are so surprised with Roger's defeat. Yes, Felix sucks at final but this was not a final and the guy is playing well.

Roger barely played after his injury and he is almost 40, that's a recipe for disaster.

People thinking he'll win Wimbledon live in a world of delusion.

by Anonymousreply 93June 17, 2021 12:25 PM

I think Novaxx will still be the favorite at Wimbledon. At the USA Open Pedal will be a joint favorite. The younger players may have a chance at the Olympics where only the final is Best of 5. They lack the physical or mental stamina to consistently outlast the Big Two in best of 5 matches, but a best of 3 would make things easier for them.

The AELTC is probably celebrating Pedal's withdrawal. It's become easier for them to "arrange" a draw for Gramps that is full of pigeons, journeymen and clay court specialists to give him an easy ride at least until the semis.

by Anonymousreply 94June 17, 2021 12:28 PM

If there is any justice in this world my lover DelPo who won bronze in London 2012 and silver in Rio 2016 will finally win gold at the TokyOlympics.

by Anonymousreply 95June 17, 2021 12:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 96June 17, 2021 12:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 100June 17, 2021 1:35 PM

yes, nadal is "listening to his body" just like Roger

by Anonymousreply 101June 17, 2021 1:42 PM

"Hello everybody. I want to inform you that I have decided not to participate in the next edition of Wimbledon that will be held from June 28 to July 11. Nor will I play the Olympic Games finally scheduled for July 24-30.

It is a decision that is never easy to make and after listening to my body and talking to my team, I understand that it is the right decision in order to extend my sports career and continue doing what makes me happy; compete at the highest level and continue to fight for professional and personal challenges at the highest level in a competitive way.

The fact that there are only two weeks between Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year has not helped my body recover from the always demanding clay court season. It has been two months of great effort and the decision I make is focused on the medium and long term.

In these moments of my career as an athlete, an important part is the prevention of any type of excesses in my body that could prevent further fighting in the medium and long term for the titles.

I want to send a special greeting to all my fans around the world, to those in the UK and in Japan. The Olympic Games have meant a lot in my career and have always been a priority as an athlete, where I found the environment that every athlete wants to feel at least once in their career. Personally, I was lucky enough to experience them intensely on three occasions and also to be the standard-bearer of my country."

by Anonymousreply 102June 17, 2021 1:43 PM

I think that's a bit sus, personally. The Olympics only come around every 4 years and he'll be a year older next year, you'd want to not waste time.

by Anonymousreply 103June 17, 2021 1:46 PM

You would think Nadal would try to play the Olympics in 2024. I know he will be in his late 30s but it will be played at Roland Garros.

by Anonymousreply 104June 17, 2021 1:50 PM

I just checked and they are gonna us the French open tennis facilities for boxing as well.

by Anonymousreply 105June 17, 2021 1:53 PM

Nadal already has an Olympic gold to his name. His career stats aren't going to look that much more impressive even if he scored another medal. Besides the comparison with Gramps is not accurate. Nadal had enough decency to withdraw from the events in advance, before the draw was made. Pissy Federer played three matches, pulled out with some BS excuse and was then seen practising on grass two days later. Gramps behaved like an unprofessional bitch.

by Anonymousreply 106June 17, 2021 2:11 PM

Nadal won't be winning at RG in 2024 or possibly ever again. The spell is broken. He'd be better off doing the 'farewell tour' and hoping he strikes lucky along the way.

by Anonymousreply 115June 17, 2021 4:30 PM

R115, betting odds have Djokovic heavy favourite for Wimbledon. Barty and Serena for women's but much longer odds since women's tennis is a lot more open. Olympics I would guess the favourites are Djokovic and Osaka since that's hard court.

I thought Osaka was in some mental asylum for treatment of her mental condition? Will she be okay by end of the July?

by Anonymousreply 117June 17, 2021 4:54 PM

Looks like Nadal has just given up on playing on the grass.

I think he has two gold medals, one for singles and one for doubles, so I can understand not going to the Olympics.

I'm pretty sure he'll retire within the next two years.

by Anonymousreply 118June 17, 2021 5:09 PM

Nadal and Federer have nothing to prove to anyone. They should be allowed to manage their schedules as they see fit given their ages and time spent in this sport. Djokovic will soon be in that camp as well.

Personally not a Nadal fan, although I respect him, so glad he's out. To me, he's always a threat because he never gives up. I remember that 2018 Wimbledon semi when Djokovic was trying to come out of his slump and he and Nadal had yet another marathon match. That win revitalized Djokovic's career, but damn, Nadal was fighting tooth and nail for that match. If Nadal had beaten Djokovic, I think it very likely he'd have won a third Wimbledon over the other finalist, Kevin Anderson.

I really hope one of the younger guys takes the Wimbledon title. Tsitsy was SOOO close at RG.

by Anonymousreply 119June 17, 2021 5:48 PM

R103 The truth is the Olympics are not that important for tennis players.

It's a fact that the big 3 (and Murray) really liked the OLympics but top tennis players skipped the Olympics a lot of times in the past.

Nadal is the only of the big 3 who won an olympic gold in individuals, so his motivation is lower (in fact he won a gold in doubles too).

And at the best of 3 sets the big 3 are way more vulnerable

by Anonymousreply 120June 17, 2021 6:14 PM

So Osaka has withdrawn from Wimbledon but so far is planning on playing the Olympics

R120 in the past some top players skipped but no longer. To this generation it means a lot. Nadal already has a gold in both singles and doubles so he doesn't have to prove anything there

Djokovic DESPERATELY wants a singles gold though he has a bronze. It's the 1 thing missing. Federer would love a gold too though he does have a silver

by Anonymousreply 121June 17, 2021 6:42 PM

It's a shame that Nadal and Osaka won't play Wimbledon. Whether I'm a fan of someone or not, I always want all the top 50 players at every big event. I was thinking Nadal would be ripe for an early round loss this year. I bet he's crushed mentally by losing to Djokovic in the SF when coming into the match he had all the momentum.

Results of the day:

Berlin

Pegula upsets. Pliskova 7-5 6-2 Jessica is now 4-0 vs. Karolina and all matches were this year

Muguruza def. Rybakina 6-4 6-3 very solid win given Rybakina's big serve. She'll be a spoiler at Wimbledon for sure

R121 Osaka has zero chances of winning Wimbledon, but the Olympics are at home and on hard courts she'll be the favourite.

She should be careful with what she says and does because i don't think at Roland Garros and Wimbledon liked the way she dealt with all this

by Anonymousreply 123June 17, 2021 6:59 PM

Osaka's game should translate to grass and this could have been the year. She's obviously a big hitter and has improved her movement. It's no surprise that Keys and Kvitova do their best on grass. It has just taken Osaka time but she's definitely hurting herself by not playing. I hope she can come back mentally stronger following her break.

by Anonymousreply 124June 17, 2021 7:02 PM

R124 It's not as easy as that. A lot of big hitters are uncomfortable on grass, and Osaka never showed consistency on grass before

by Anonymousreply 125June 17, 2021 7:29 PM

Yeah I was excited to see what Osaka could do at Wimbledon. Her big hitting and serving game should translate well. But I knew she would withdraw. Shes only played one Wimbledon since her first US Open title run and she was beat by that annoying Putintseva in Rd 1.

by Anonymousreply 126June 17, 2021 7:29 PM

I'd be shocked if she didnt play the Olympics especially since its in Japan. She most likely wont do well at the next one on clay in Paris unless she improves.

by Anonymousreply 127June 17, 2021 7:32 PM

Nevermind I just read that she is definitely playing the Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 128June 17, 2021 7:36 PM

It'll be funny if, after all this drama queening and performative bullshit, Osaka gets hurt and is unable to play the Olympics or the USA Open.

by Anonymousreply 129June 17, 2021 8:08 PM

Thiem just withdrew from the Olympics but is playing Wimbledon.

by Anonymousreply 130June 17, 2021 8:21 PM

Thiem never had a real interest in Olympics

by Anonymousreply 131June 17, 2021 8:51 PM

I don't really get that. Going to the Olympics should be patriotic. Thiem is a good player, if he can play Wimbledon why can't he play the Olympics and take his chances for Austria? I find that weird.

by Anonymousreply 132June 17, 2021 8:57 PM

Which of her galpals did Jane Marple bump uglies with? Was her spinsterhood code for lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 133June 17, 2021 8:57 PM

Rafa thinks he has a better chance at the US Open than Wimbledon, which historically is right.

Plus he's probably also gutted by the Novak loss.

by Anonymousreply 134June 17, 2021 9:33 PM

some of the European players don't like to going to Asia so that's also part of it. If the Olympics were in Europe or the US the ones pulling out probably would go.

by Anonymousreply 135June 17, 2021 10:25 PM

The US Open is where the draw can sometimes fall apart. Nadal benefited in 2017 and 2019. Historically, the US Open hadn't been his best tournament. That's likely why he didn't play last year to save himself for RG. That was a smart move. All his big competitors were gassed given how close the US Open was to RG. Not the same thing this year. I'd be surprised if he plays the US Open this year, though.

When Nadal comes back from long injury breaks at the US Open, he usually goes out earlier.

by Anonymousreply 136June 17, 2021 10:40 PM

He's got 4 US right? His 2nd best major.

by Anonymousreply 137June 17, 2021 10:43 PM

it might help Nadal if the other top guys are exhausted after Wimbledon, the Olympics and US summer hardcourt series

by Anonymousreply 138June 17, 2021 10:53 PM

I worry that win or lose, the Olympics in Japan might break Osaka. She just seems so fragile.

by Anonymousreply 139June 17, 2021 11:01 PM
She should be careful with what she says and does because i don't think at Roland Garros and Wimbledon liked the way she dealt with all this

by Anonymousreply 140June 17, 2021 11:07 PM

That Osaka shtick was old about 20 posts of the same thing ago.

by Anonymousreply 141June 17, 2021 11:54 PM

I'm glad that Osaka is playing the Olympics because there is almost no media covering the event.

by Anonymousreply 142June 18, 2021 12:50 AM

Will the Japanese media crucify Osaka if she crashes out early in Tokyo and then takes to Instagram to post about how everything affected her mental health?

by Anonymousreply 143June 18, 2021 9:54 AM

Osaka seems a good girl but i find her a little hypocrite. Her reasons to play for Japan and not the USA are basically money, and she criticise the racism on the USA but i have serious doubt she'll do the same with Japan which historically is one of the most xenophobic countries in the world.

And i believe she has anxiety problems but i dont buy the depression

by Anonymousreply 144June 18, 2021 2:39 PM

R144, I think it's a bit more nuanced than that. Osaka would make piles of endorsement money playing either for the U.S. or for Japan. It's fair for her to choose Japan because her mother is Japanese. And, while the Japanese are hugely xenophobic, and Osaka has faced racist remarks in Japan, Japan doesn't have the ongoing racist violence that the United States has.

by Anonymousreply 145June 18, 2021 3:11 PM

racism is still racism, doesn't matter if it's violent or non-violent.

Of course she chose to rep Japan for the money. so obvious. she doesn't even speak Japanese! She understands some but always answers in English. Also, you would think she would be brushing up her language, speak it with her mom etc but no...

She grew up in NY...have you ever heard a new yorker speak the way she speaks? Like trying to act innocent and childlike? totally catering to the Japanese market.

Gee...why doesn't she rep Haiti? That's where her dad is from!

I am not a fan.

by Anonymousreply 146June 18, 2021 3:25 PM

r146 She would have had better chances for success, and financially it would have helped her as well, if she would have started for the US. Just stop it.

R144 you're wrong. Osaka is playing for Japan because when she was a kid, someone at the USTA decided she wasn't good enough to invest resources in compared to others in her age group. It was smart of her parents to go to Japan which obviously had much less competition among tennis hopefuls. Haiti doesn't have the money and facilities for that.

Obviously it's difficult to know which children will end up being slam winners but clearly someone at the USTA really dropped the ball by dismissing Osaka's prospects.

Today's results:

Berlin

Azarenka def. Pegula 6-2 5-7 6-4 Azarenka was up a break in the second set but let it slip away and rebounded in the third

Samsonova def. Keys 7-6(4) 2-6 7-6(0) as you can imagine, Keys definitely had chances to win this but blew it

Cornet upsets Muguruza 4-6 6-3 7-6(5) as you can imagine there was lots of drama. Muguruza had match point at 5-4, Cornet was up 6-1 in the tiebreak

Bencic def. Alexandrova 6-4 4-6 7-6(4)

Halle

Humbert def. Korda 6-2 6(5)-7 6-4

Shapovalov vs. Tiafoe suspended due to darkness after Shapovalov won the first set 6-3. Tiafoe looks really hot in the sleeveless.

by Anonymousreply 155June 18, 2021 8:00 PM

Osaka chose Japan because she saw how much Kei earned over there. Plus she can still dip into the American market with her skin color. She is a fake ass bitch.

by Anonymousreply 156June 18, 2021 9:43 PM

I think Berrettini has a good game for grass. He could go far.

by Anonymousreply 157June 18, 2021 9:45 PM

Sounds like ESL is back.

by Anonymousreply 158June 18, 2021 10:07 PM

Osaka committed to play for Japan at an early age and that was always the plan according to her parents. Before she got all invovled in Black Lives Matter, she used to say she had no idea what it felt like to be American, even though she had lived 90% of her life in the US.

Also why else would she have taken her mother's name rather than her father's?

by Anonymousreply 159June 18, 2021 10:20 PM

The USTA was nuts to not try and hold onto Osaka. Or did they?

by Anonymousreply 160June 18, 2021 10:30 PM

When was the last time the USTA nurtured and produced a great player?

by Anonymousreply 161June 18, 2021 10:32 PM

R160, according to Osaka’s family, the USTA first approached her when she was sixteen. By then it was too late, she was representing Japan.

Just like Pam Shriver who munched every rug between Baltimore and Newport to get inducted, and much to her humiliation, the HoF still made her pay a $6.5M deposit before confirming her induction.

We could tell during your induction speeches. Pam had to pause to pull some pubic hair out of her teeth. And we saw Todd M walking a bit funny and pinching your butt cheeks when he walked past you at your ceremony. You and Shriver really put the "Ho" in the "HoF".

Is it common for Japanese kids to take their mother's family name? I know that men who marry into large business families sometimes take their wife's name if the wife's family does not have a male heir to carry on the name.

by Anonymousreply 172June 19, 2021 11:57 AM

R172, Naomi was given her mother's last name so she would fit in better in Japan and seem less "foreign". The family probably intended to stay there longer than they did.

by Anonymousreply 173June 19, 2021 12:39 PM

Osaka was given her mother's surname for practical reason. To register as a Japanese citizen in Japan you must have a Japanese name with their writing system (Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana). To transliterate "François" with Japanese Katakana alphabet would have been problematic, so they just opted for the simple Osaka name.

by Anonymousreply 174June 19, 2021 2:16 PM

That is one giant choke from Ugo. He was a set and a break up. Also he had a break point to go for double break up for 4-1 lead. He missed that. After that he got broken twice in a row. And lost the set 6-3

He did similar thing in AO open against Krygois.

It seems like he is joining long lines of French chokies led by Richard Gaysquet.

by Anonymousreply 175June 19, 2021 2:16 PM

R160 Osaka was not a good junior, so you really needed to see beyond the results and that's not that easy.

Nobody could predict Berrettini was going to be a top 10 either.

A lot of spanish fans complain about De Miñaur playing for Australia when he is spanish too and played good part of his career in Spain. Even De Miñaur was a good prospect the truth is he was no better than Davidovich or Kuhn (but spanish federation was really blind not helping him when he need it).

At least in De Miñaur and Osaka's cases (no matter the motivation behind) they chose their nationality at an early age instead of trying to cash on it.

And there are some strange cases like Rebeka Masarova, she played for Spain at an early age but then she decided to play for Switzerland (and she had a lot of success in juniors), but after starting her pro career as a swiss she switched again and now is playing for Spain

by Anonymousreply 176June 19, 2021 2:17 PM

R175 Unfortunately Ugo is a choker. He has a lot of potential but he is not consistent during matches. It's a pity because he is polite and inteligent (unlike most youngsters)

Watching Shapalov v Norrie at Queens, two hot guys. Shapalov is on his face having his bum firmly groped by a physio at the moment, due to a muscle spasm.

by Anonymousreply 179June 19, 2021 3:02 PM

Norrie won the first set, btw.

by Anonymousreply 180June 19, 2021 3:03 PM

Ugo pulls through in the third tie-breaker.

by Anonymousreply 181June 19, 2021 3:15 PM

Shapo v Norrie is a really enjoyable match. Norrie used to be shit on grass, but he suddenly seems to have got the hang of it.

by Anonymousreply 182June 19, 2021 3:20 PM

But he was able to win anyway.

Good grass season for Felix, he should do well on Wimbledon

by Anonymousreply 183June 19, 2021 3:22 PM

Norrie puts away Shapo in 2. It could be a great final against Berrettini: both of them are in great form.

by Anonymousreply 184June 19, 2021 3:30 PM

And Norrie wins, 7/3, 6/3. A surprise, as Shapalopv started really strongly (having polished off Tiafoe easily earlier) and Norrie took a bit of time to get going.

by Anonymousreply 185June 19, 2021 3:31 PM

FAA has said enough is enough and I'm sick of losing in the final. From now on he's losing in the semis.

by Anonymousreply 186June 19, 2021 3:37 PM

I am now officially in love with Norrie. Love that mixed bag of an accent he’s got—an antipodean fruit salad with very vague bits of Brit toff in there. Sooooo sexy.

R203 FAA is cuter but both have the good guy vibe so unusual in the circuit. And both play the piano and are polite on court.

Their problems are similar too because they lack some character on court that could be very useful in difficult situations

by Anonymousreply 216June 20, 2021 12:18 PM

He does r206 but I wonder if he is shaved? Unhelpfully he changed his shirt on court while facing the wrong way. When his shirt rides up there’s no fur tho’ there is some at his neckline. Hmm.

R208 Are you ok? It's not racist nor xenophobic. Their language (Japanese) is not in Latin alphabet so logically everything must be written with their writing system, names included, like in all countries with other alphabets (Arab countries, Iran, China, Russia and the Cyrillic Slav nations etc). I didn't say that it was not possible, I said it would have been problematic because of "François" pronunciation. They could have done it if they wanted, but they preferred not to. Taro Daniel's parents decided to transliterate the father's name. Daniel is the Western transliteration but officially he's spelled "Tarou Danieru" in Japan. Same goes for every non Japanese word. For instance "computer" is written "konpyuta". Same with Ben MacLachlan, who's officially Ben Makurakuran. He got the Japanese citizenship when he was already an adult, he could have opted for a totally different name in Japanese, but he decided to transliterate his Anglo name.

Norrie will now receive superstar treatment in the British press and at Wimbledon. A single final at Queens is something that will guarantee a cushy tennis career for him and post-retirement commentary gigs must be waiting for him already. They will act like he is one of the favorites to win Wimbledon now and then keep hyping him until the inevitable second round loss.

by Anonymousreply 235June 20, 2021 5:57 PM

Mirka, any truth to the rumor that Rog couldn't get it up long enough even for the IVF to work and that you had to go shopping for "sperm of tennis champion, must have won at least seven Slams"?

Is that why Pete Sampras still looks so smug in spite of losing his Slam record? Are your kids starting to show their Greek and Jewish heritage, Mir? Are you terrified? I told you that you shoulda gone to Bjorn Borg for his sperm. I certainly wish I had, instead of returning to the Jimbo Connors well for my brats. (Wait, I mean that skier, whatsisname. The weepy one I married. Randy Shill? Definitely not Jimmy. No, not Jimmy. Forget I said it.)

Yes, Judy. The Big Four Twats of British Tennis. Andy, Jamie, Judy and Morrie.

by Anonymousreply 239June 20, 2021 6:07 PM

Norrie is decidedly average in the looks department but to each his own

Berrettini's title spread is very unique. 3 clay and 2 grass. He's never even been to a hardcourt final. You'd think indoors with that serve he'd be lethal

Humbert is quite the shotmaker

Based on form it's not surprising that Jabeur and Samsonova both won their first titles today.

So far on the men's side we have 5 maiden champions in comparison to the 10 R224 listed

Evans, Popyrin, Cerundolo, Karatsev and Korda

I do wonder who will win a title first-FAA or Norrie. They've both had chances

by Anonymousreply 240June 20, 2021 6:10 PM

Wimbledon gave Samsonova a main draw WC following her Berlin win

by Anonymousreply 247June 20, 2021 8:09 PM

Ugo played super aggressive tennis and that lefty serve was sizzling today. Impressive win for a stick of a guy. Not surprised by Berrettini, his game is made for grass. Samsonova hits hard, spinning groundies with great depth and has a very good serve. Never saw her play until today but that was some serious power baseline tennis.

The ATP ranking system has gone completely sideways since they changed for COVID. Whoever lists which points are dropping, etc., from one week to the next has apparently given up. There's no way to calculate accurately to predict who's moving where in the rankings from the data they show.

Pampers does not worship at the altar of St. Roger, and MJF can't abide that. If Zina should hate anyone -it should be MJF, who took her Fed Cup job.

OK, that is good. I hate the endless worship of Our Lord and Savior Roger by the tennis media.

I hope that every time someone brings up Roger's "record" 8 Wimbledons, Pampers reminds them that Martina has 9 and will still be a joint record holder even if St Roger somehow lucks out and wins this year.

I know that they mean Roger holds the men's record but it pisses me off when he gets mentioned as [italic] the [/italic] record holder at Wimbledon and Martina gets mentioned as an afterthought. Either way the women get ignored. No one thinks of adding "and Chris Evert holds the women's record with seven titles" when elevating Nadal to the "greatest ever with the most wins in Paris".

EVERT also has lost to a lesser number of players on clay than nadal has i believe as well. and gosh knows how many grand slam titles evert and martina would have won if they had played all 4 grand slams every year! Evert herself only played the aussie 6 times in her entire career from 1970 to 1989..

and of course the so called tennis expert commentators never mention how many doubles and mixed doubles martina has won at wimbledon either!

by Anonymousreply 282June 22, 2021 11:12 AM

Yeah, Monica got royally screwed as well as stabbed, but no way would she have ended up GOAT.

by Anonymousreply 283June 22, 2021 12:27 PM

Chrissie would have been the GOAT had she played all the Australian Opens and all the French Opens she snubbed in the mid 70s.

by Anonymousreply 284June 22, 2021 1:03 PM

I don't know that Seles would have been GOAT, but that stabbing changed the history of women's tennis. Monica for sure would have had a lot more Slams, and Steffi fewer. In listening to that episode, Monica confirmed what I've thought all along, which is that mentally she was just never the same and lost that laser focus she had early in her career when she was winning all the time. Monica would have likely won Wimbledon at least once or twice, if not more. She took down Navratilova on grass, so she had the ability to win it.

The sad thing in that interview is Monica said after taking down Steffi at the 1993 Australian, she was feeling invincible. She may have won the Calendar Year Slam that year if she was that brimming with confidence. Sadly, we'll never know.

by Anonymousreply 285June 22, 2021 1:17 PM

And remember that Seles lost that Wimbledon final because bitches Navratilova, Graff and others complained about her grunting and she was forbidden to do so and therefore she lost timing and breathing. She was very disliked by the other big women, definitely because they feared the Serbian kid would have taken every trophy away from them. Seles 1990-1993 was an absolute beast, a terminator. Mentally unstoppable and scary.

by Anonymousreply 286June 22, 2021 3:20 PM

Monica Seles is poor metaphorically but not literally: her husband is a billionaire and not a fake one like the orangeutan so I guess she's a billionaire too.

Watching Nole's Doubles match in Mallorca. Why the hell did he partner with such a subpar tennis player?! The difference in quality between the two is embarrassing. The guy Gomez Herrera just doublefaulted on set point and they lost the set thanks to all his errors. Not a big surprise as he is No. 300 something in Doubles lol. Incomprehensible choice by Novak.

by Anonymousreply 289June 22, 2021 3:41 PM

Chrissy got her ass kicked once Martina lost weight and got her act together, so she wouldn't have been 🐐 anyway even if she had won all the bullshit Aussie and Garros in the 70s with lame fields. If Maggie Court gets called out for winning three dozen Aussies with bullshit fields, the same would be true of the Aussie and Garros fields in the 70s too.

In any case the power players like Vee, Ree and even fatty Lindsay made Monica irrelevant. Her dad's illness would have affected her even without the stabbing. The truth is Serena is the 🐐 and Chrissy is just too biased and racist to admit it, so she is pretending to be generous by praising Moni. If Cuntapova or JenJen had Serena's record that evil bitch Chrissy wouldn't be calling anyone else a 🐐.

by Anonymousreply 290June 22, 2021 3:49 PM

R289, It’s unlikely that he chose this particular player as a partner. I think he is doing this event as a favor to the Nadals, who own, or partially own, the new event and club. I don’t think Rafa is likely to turn up in Belgrade, but players from Rafa’s academy probably will.

by Anonymousreply 291June 22, 2021 4:09 PM

R290 please tell us all WHY serena is the goat? she has the tied record for most grand slam singles in the open era and THAT'S IT!...

most slam titles singles, doubles, mixed? nope..

most weeks as number #1? nope...

most tournaments won of all time? nope...

best winning percentage of all time? nope..

grand slam winner? nope...

as previously stated, just winning the most slam singles titles in the open era, tying it that is, has much much more to the story... if martina and chris had played all of the grand slams every year they would both have more than serena, regardless how strong the fields were or were not...

by Anonymousreply 295June 22, 2021 5:19 PM

Your own pro-Serena bias is showing through, r290. If we’re talking GOAT in tennis, then tennis has to include *all* tennis, and not just GSs. That would include number of tournaments overall, singles, doubles, and mixed. To reduce the GOAT debate to a simple sum of GS singles titles is to ignore that it’s tennis we’re talking about and not just GSs singles tournies.

Did Venus, Serena or Lindsay play Monica pre-stabbing?

by Anonymousreply 299June 22, 2021 6:43 PM

R296, Serena played in the era of proper tournaments with full draws. Chrissy and even Martina, but essentially Chrissy, have their records padded with lots of "tournaments" that consisted of just two or three matches. Lots of bullshit exhibitions and invitationals get counted as tournaments in Chrissy's total. Not to mention she played in the hit and giggle era where there was no wear and tear. She could just stand there and hit groundstrokes.

Rena's tally is of real tournaments with proper draws in a much more physical era. Today's greats could also have a lot more wins if they had to play just 1 or 2 matches to win a "tournament". For half of her career Chrissy didn't even have to play 7 matches to win a Slam. She won in a softer, easier, more leisurely era when only white girls played the game. There is no comparison at all with the level of the sport today.

LOTS of b.s. exhibitions? L'eggs World Series, The ABC World Invitational, Clairol Crown were all sanctioned events. You would never have seen Flo or Mike Blanchard or Lee Jackson at those events if they hadn't been. In the start of the tennis boom - which Chrissie was the most wanted and marketable player - those made for tv events got better ratings than the slams. You R300 are remarkably ignorant about tennis history.

Court won her first Australian title in 1960, when both Christine Truman and Maria Bueno, the number one and two players in the World the previous year (and the AO was in January) and winners of the previous years Wimbledon, U.S. and French titles respectively were in the draw. Court defeated Bueno in the QFs, while countrywoman Jan Lehane who was a top 5 player, defeated Truman in the semis. It was a world class field. Court may not be a great person, but she was an amazing tennis player and the mythology that all her Australian titles were won against poor fields is patently incorrect and put forward by Court's biggest rival BJK to undermine her. I often question if Court makes her homophobic comments in no small part to get back at King's continual attempts to undermind Court's legacy, because BJK has been doing far longer than Mag's has been making those slurs.

by Anonymousreply 328June 23, 2021 6:12 AM

It's great and fine that Court won all those Aussie titles. It was nuts the Australian had slam status at all. It should have been the Italian - or South African , that should have been the 4th slam. Court's ability to win on ANY surface, and that she played nonstop are admirable. The women pros, while trying to build their tour, were aggravated Court preferred under the table payment (especially from foreign countries) because it benefited HER only. She was selfish....until she had a talk with Glayds Heldman and realized what she could make above board. Her 1973 record is astonshing. Three slams, and only 5 matches lost all year. She set a prize money record, one that Evert eclipsed the next year, because 1st place prize money on the Slims was a minimum of $10,000 for every event.

by Anonymousreply 329June 23, 2021 12:14 PM

Evert was a superior player to Court.

by Anonymousreply 330June 23, 2021 1:12 PM

Chris Evert was and is the epitome of white privilege.

by Anonymousreply 331June 23, 2021 1:16 PM

R330.. evert was better than court... head to head evert lead 9 to 4, even if you discard some of those evert victories like in 1975, 76 and 77 when court was past her prime, the fact remains that head to head they were 3-3 when evert was 15 to 18 years old and court 1970 to 1973 was a grand slam winner (70) and number #1 in the world (73).. and of course this is also a teenage wood racket strictly baseliner evert...

a older mature 80's evert with the wood and then with the graphite as she became more experienced, stronger, more athletic, quicker, more variety, all court player would have destroyed court even more so..

R331 the only "white privilege" evert had was that her daddy was a former amateur player and her coach! that's it! they came from public parks and a middle to lower middle class upbringing....

if anything the williams sister had MORE privilege as the big lie continues that their ONLY coach was their father! that they had NO HELP FROM ANYONE ELSE! which is utter B.S. ...

r261, Pam is on the ESPN press release for Wimbledon.

Pam Shriver, who started working for ESPN in 1990, long before her Hall of Fame career ended, played in the US Open finals at age 16 (losing to Evert) and three times in the Wimbledon semifinals. She won 21 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles (another in Mixed) including five at Wimbledon plus a Gold Medal in doubles at the 1988 Olympics. Pam is also most definitely a confirmed heterosexual.

How much fun watching Andreescu (injury queen) and Cornet (bratty queen) get beat today! Kontaveit out-played Andreescu’s game style. Cornet could have and should have won (three match points) but lost. She’s gone 0-8 against Azarenka now.

ROTFLOL. Spam has been saying that for the last four decades. Even in the 80s when she'd go muff diving with me, Martina, Wendy and the other lezzies on the tour she would keep insisting that she was straight. Wimbledon once accidentally produced a yearbook with Spam's face on it and the events mistakenly labeled as Lezzies Singles and Lezzies Doubles.

Spam used to pretend to have the hots for Bush but it was well known that the only bush she wanted to eat out was Barbara's. I will say this for Spam. She knows how to please a woman. I just wish she would stop moaning Margaret's name when she pleasures herself.

Thiem is now in doubt for Wimbledon. He went to Barcelona for a further test on his wrist which we'll likely find out on Thursday

Barty is practicing but who knows if her body will hold up. Same with Halep

by Anonymousreply 343June 23, 2021 8:01 PM

Maybe Nole's doubles partner is bad, but they keep winning and Nole said he is having a great time on court

by Anonymousreply 344June 23, 2021 8:25 PM

R315 His psychological reaction to winning the US Open was, honestly, pretty pathetic. Highly likely that deep down he feels he didn't deserve it as he never had the mindset of a true champion - in fact it was Zverev who choked and gave him the title, plus Nole defeaulted etc. He would take him hours to close matches that should have been won quite easily and also pushed his body to the limit. He's on his way to become a Guillermo Coria, but with the Slam.

by Anonymousreply 345June 23, 2021 9:13 PM
He's on his way to become a Guillermo Coria, but with the Slam.

by Anonymousreply 359June 24, 2021 3:06 PM

R346 The comparison was in terms of psychological reaction to a certain event at the peak of their career. Coria lost to Gaudio and imploded. Thiem won the US Open and imploded.

by Anonymousreply 360June 24, 2021 4:24 PM

R359 Unironically I like that. LMAO It feels like an anime showdown - The defending champion of the tournament awaits the plebs in the final. Will the king of the tournament be dethroned? It sounds much more exciting than "Yeah let's do it all over again from scratch".

EEW I fucking hate the Wimbledon draws this year. The men's is really awful with Djokovic having a pretty easy ride to the QF

good to see Kyrgios returning but he's drawn Humbert and they both obviously have the talent to go far

The women's draw is going to be a fucking mess. A lot of the top seeds have tough opening round opponents. Defending champ Halep last minute withdrawal

a lot of my favorite higher and lower ranked players in both draws have drawn each other lol

by Anonymousreply 371June 25, 2021 9:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 373June 25, 2021 11:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 390June 26, 2021 5:40 PM

Ova, Lemig

by Anonymousreply 391June 26, 2021 5:44 PM

Wtf, R390? That is really tacky. How could Martina let her stoop that low? I told her not to marry that Russkie babushka. If she had listened to my pleading and married me, that proud Republican American, none of this would have happened.

by Anonymousreply 392June 26, 2021 5:45 PM

R390, I don’t know if that’s a good move, even apart from the tackiness. Lemigova has a bit of a shady past. She was romantically involved with a billionaire Swiss banker who deeply into S&M; he was subsequently shot to death during an intense bondage session by his next girlfriend. Lemigova and the Swiss guy had a child who died under “mysterious circumstances.” Sometimes it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie.
