I don't know her.

Not to spend too much more time on Kim Zimmer, but it's news to me that there was talk of her going to All My Children in 1995.

I posted that R3 and if I remember right that was something in Lynda Hirsch when KZ's first shows as a ghost happened.
Because JFP was saying "this is just a visit"

I'm just so fascinated by it, R4. The idea of Susan Lucci AND Kim Zimmer on the same soap? I can't decide how I feel about this.

Who was she going to play on AMC?
Kim Zimmer always gave hausfrau energy to me, she always seemed like some mom in a minivan to me. Even when she was skinny I thought that .

I take that about as seriously as the rumor that AMC wanted Deidre Hall to play Tara after she was let go from DAYS.
As in, not at all.

Sometimes I find myself thinking, "What would Geraldine Whitney do?"
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 17, 2021 1:45 AM |
Kim Zimmer did have connections with ABC soaps, remember she was on OLTL right before GL and then went back there after GL was cancelled. So it is somewhat conceivable that she might have had talks with AMC. Also, AMC didn't have a problem bringing on big names from other soaps, they brought on Genie Francis and Finola Hughes, among others, without La Lucci going insane.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 17, 2021 2:26 AM |
I'm sure if AMC was ever in talks with her, that probably went out the window as soon as Marcy Walker announced a return to AMC - which happened around the time of Zimmer's original guest stint.
The whole mention may have just been PR BS to make Zimmer look in demand. In any case, if GL was what she wanted, she got her wish, clearly.
And let's get real - La Lucci would not welcome KZ joining the cast AT ALL.

I'm now imagining Kim reading for Sydney Chase on THE CITY. (Probably not, but it *was* a prominent new role on a New York-based soap in '95.)

Nancy Frangione
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 17, 2021 5:01 PM |
Actually Kim would have been a great Cecile recast. But a star like Kim really should never be a recast, but a new character - created especially for her.
I always felt kind of bad for her that things never worked out for her in Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 17, 2021 5:05 PM |
She would have been great in Evening Shade. Or as a full time character on Designing Women.
It was just a matter of timing for her. That, and the fact that she had two young children by the mid 80s and wanted a steady job, which meant she wasn't competing in Hollywood until she was 35.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 17, 2021 5:11 PM |
I am not a Zimmer fan, but she would have been better than Marilu Henner as the wife on Evening Shade.

Now, I'm watching this and am enthralled.
I love how fucking BORED Vanessa looks during the trial ("Daddy, they mention me at all!")
I'd love to see Marland's version of this story from GH -- Lesley going to jail for Laura killing David Hamilton; and Kim being grilled by Avril Hobson on ATWT

I just watched that clip, thanks for sending me down that rabbit hole. How did they rewrite Amanda's paternity? From that clip it was a teenage fling between Alan and Jennifer that resulted in pregnancy. How did they wedge Brandon Spaulding into the story?

Watching GL die was like watching a favorite aunt or grandparent die of neglect.
They should have pulled out all the stops and gotten vets galore back in the 1990s: Kathleen Cullen, Elvera Roussel, Lenore Kasdorf....
all had story to tell and would have rejuvenated Alan and Ed.
Marj, god rest her soul was a lovely woman and great as Myrna and Vanessa (AMC), but she was not Alexandra.
P&G would hire people to run the shows who had never watched them.

Kim Zimmer was in talks to play Kelly Ripa (Hayley) trailer-trash mother (Arlene) in 1995
But then Guiding Light caught wind of it and stepped in with an offer, and Kim could never say no to Reva.

It really would have been THE perfect role for her on that show.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 18, 2021 1:58 AM |
have to say though that Oliva Birkelund was fantastic in that part.
She didn't look old enough to be Hayley's mom, but she played her as such a neurotic sex-starved mess!
She and Alec (Grant Aleksander) did some real deep dark stuff on the show.
She couldn't help but drool over her daughter's new b.f.; he got wind of it and when Arlene caught onto Alec's embezzling, she threatened him; he MARRIED Hayley and on their wedding night, while Hayley's down in the car, Alec goes up to his apartment and there's Arlene and she's all screw me now or I tell Hayley everything. (something like that)
They start making out; she tries to leave and he's like oh, no. ENOUGH. He pushes her into wall, grabs her, picks her up in his arms (Swoon) and puts her on the bed and screws the daylights out of her. (Grant didn't take his shirt off though grrr); I supposed it'd have been interesting to see Phillip and Reva do the nasty, but I did find Birkelund to be compelling in the role.

I think Zimmer would have been even better casting than Birkelund, though.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 18, 2021 2:30 AM |
When Kim Zimmer went to the Soap "Santa Barbara" she did contact P&G as a courtesy to see if there was any interest from Guiding Light, before she signed with SB. At that time "Guiding Light" was riding high & Robert Newman wasn't on the show. So P&G deferred to Jill Farren Phelps - and JFP wasn't interested.
This time around when AMC approached Kim - Guiding Light was in a free fall in the ratings and Jill Farren Phelps job was on the chopping block. This time around P&G demanded Jill make a formal offer to Kim - as Robert Newman was on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 18, 2021 2:34 AM |
I think CBS also insisted Zimmer come back.
Zimmer was featured on the CBS Special 50 Years of Soaps along Jackie Zeman, Bill and Susan Hayes, Bill and Lee Bell, A Martinez, and Eileen Fulton.
They were all introduced and special clips were shown of their work; all spectacular.
If CBS wasn't interested or invested in Zimmer, then they would have had a clip of someone else shown -- Maeve, Hunter Tylo, Peter Simon, Zaslow....
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 18, 2021 2:41 AM |
BB had a really low turnout at that taping btw. the show was in Malibu shooting Ridge and Brooke's wedding - the one that didn't count
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 18, 2021 2:42 AM |
I think Zimmer would have been better than Birkelund because the show, by that point, had slipped away from Dickensian, larger than life characters (like Dorothy Lyman’s Opal) and Zimmer’s Arlene would have fit the bill. Arlene was a loser. Birkelund, with her stunning blue eyes, was simply too pretty for the role.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 18, 2021 3:57 AM |
R30 It was Megan McTavish's writing so what can we expect? After JFP and the Demorest/Curlee head writing team left is when GL really started to lose its way.

Harding Lemay brought Janice back before he left. Did he write the projection/outline for Janice’s poisoning of Mac?
by Anonymous | reply 88 | April 24, 2021 3:18 AM |
The Harry Must Die plot where Janice poisoned Mac was not the type of story that Harding Lemay liked to write.
That plot didn't get underway until fall 1979 with the arrival of Mitch Blake. Mac and Janice didn't marry until Oct. 1979.
Lemay's final scripts aired in early May 1979. While his story projections likely went for a while, there was plenty of time for Tom King (the subsequent HW) to come up with the Harry Must Die plot on his own.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | April 24, 2021 8:26 AM |
I would assume that someone, either NBC or PG, decided that AW had to inject some some old school soap plots and plotting into the mix. And because the Sven story hit big with Mac and Rachel being in jeopardy, someone came up with Harry Must Die. It was actually a good story. What came after it, not so much.

by Anonymous | reply 97 | April 24, 2021 5:50 PM |
R97 Genie Francis said she LOVED her time on AMC - and was all set to renew her contract
But ABC wanted her back on General Hospital and decided not to renew her contract, basically forcing her to go back to GH if she wanted to work for ABC again
by Anonymous | reply 98 | April 24, 2021 5:54 PM |
That was so cunty of ABC to force Genie to go back to GH. But no surprise since Mickey Dwyer Dobbin was head of ABC Daytime. She later fired Zas when she moved over to P&G. Has MADD become a wizened old woman by now?
by Anonymous | reply 99 | April 24, 2021 6:27 PM |
and I think she has just bought a new condo in NY; she probably wasn't in a bind financially, but still a shitty thing to do.
Then, again, someone at ABC tells her um don't buy that condo before they have to contractually let her know is something against the rules.
As for the mall tour, sure, it's about money, but it's also about fans getting to meet their favorite stars, grab an autograph, a photo, look them right in the eye and say "I love that scene with you and Mac where you said he'll always be your dad" (for example).
Grab the money when you can.

Two-part question: When was Genie's last day on AMC and was she ever officially a LOVING cast member? I ask because if the timeline's right, she would have been between gigs for at least a year. Luke & Laura didn't return to GH until late October 1993. Which brings up new questions: Was GH having to negotiate that long with Geary to get him to bring back Luke? Was he contractually obligated to play Bill Eckert as long as he did? Was Genie getting any payment while she waited?
by Anonymous | reply 102 | April 24, 2021 7:44 PM |
WIth all due respect to Genie and her legend status, the lady never seems happy. I think she is another one of those daytime actors who is constantly pissed off because because they thought daytime was a stepping stone but they ended up being stuck there. To bring this back to P&G, Kim Zimmer was probably pissed about being stuck in daytime, but she played the hand that was dealt and only griped about things that mattered.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | April 24, 2021 7:52 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 104 | April 24, 2021 8:00 PM |
This interview with Genie gives insight into why she feels the way she does r103.
Seems like she was treated as a commodity-she would get cast on a show for her name value, but the characters weren’t fleshed out.
There are great interviews on this site with multiple P&G folks too...
by Anonymous | reply 105 | April 24, 2021 8:08 PM |
R103, you have valid points, but Zimmer was a full adult when she took off as Reva, winning three Daytime Emmys.
She came out to LA, did that dynamite Designing Women episode, which I believed they submitted for their Best Show that year at the Emmys.
HOW could the Bloodworth Thomasons not have found something for her?
Genie was 16 when GH started to take off and 17 or 18 when the show was a mega-hit -- it was the stories Doug Marland wrote, but Laura was the central figure of the show.
One of my favorite SNL cast members is Dana Carvey, but the man never found the popularity outside of SNL that he had on it. Some actors shine in genres that don't pay the big bucks that others do, but they can't carry that popularity over to other genres.
I hope Genie's happy now. Or happier. Geary got all the accolades, but he wasn't acting in a vacuum. I can't find it but Laura breaking down and confessing the whole David Hamilton mess to Luke at Wyndham's was heartbreaking. She should have won an Emmy for that alone. Maybe if the ingenue category had been around, but Genie was Lead all the way.
I was watching some old Joan Rivers interviews and she talked about the importance of appreciating when times are good. I'm hoping that times are good now for Genie. She's free of Geary and whatever negativity went down between them. Hopefully, she enjoys working with Lindstrom. The show brought Denise back for a few episodes in the last few months. I'm sure she enjoyed that, too.
I'm sure they all look at Julianne Moore -- she did her three years on soaps, had two major stories (Doug Cummings; Sabrina), won her Daytime Emmy and plugged away at films from the Hand that Rocks the Cradle to her Oscar winning Still Alice.
I'm sure they all think: why can't I transfer from soaps to Oscar stardom?
This business is such a crapshoot. I'd call Sasha Calle and Kiara Barnes two of the less exciting actresses who've come down the pike but they're about to exit soaps for, respectively, film and prime time land.

[quote] Two-part question: When was Genie's last day on AMC and was she ever officially a LOVING cast member? I ask because if the timeline's right, she would have been between gigs for at least a year.
No, Genie was never official a Loving cast member - she and Jean LeClerc crossed over to Loving to boost the ratings. She returned to AMC and her last day was sometime in July 1992
The reason for the one-year lag is she was pissed off at being fired from AMC. All so ABC could force her to go back to GH. So she resisted overtures. Finally after a year, she agreed to go back to GH, as her return was announced in May of 1993 - almost a year since she last worked on AMC
But Genie wouldn't start appearing on GH until November 1993 (for sweeps)
BUT If she went directly to from AMC to GH, TPTB would have switched Geary from Bill Eckert to Luke Spencer in a heartbeat

That is what Zimmer thinks - before she went to Santa Barbara (the soap) her agents did alert CBS, and they did have interest. They let Jill Farren Phelps make the final decisis, and JFP said no
When ZImmer started to get overtures from other soaps in 1995, CBS caught wind and laid down the law to JFP - find room for Zimmer. They wanted her back

In hindsight, it's a pity Danny Markel didn't hang around as Sam Fowler. Is there a story there, or why Thomas Gibson was only a temp after RKK left?

[quote] . Is there a story there, or why Thomas Gibson was only a temp after RKK left?
Thomas Gibson was not interested continuing to work on Soaps - he just did ATWT and only did AW as a favor to the P&G folks. It was only help usher the character of Sam Fowler off the canvas
They had actually offered Sam Fowler to Jon Hensley, and he thought about it. But then thought, if I want to go back to soaps, why not go back to ATWT (which he did opposite a recast Lily)
No idea why Daniel Markel was short-lived in that role.

She was a big deal and of course she got cast because she was "Laura" that's just the way the entertainment industry works. But I think most soap writers will tell you that they have an idea and a story for a character and the character gets on screen and everything changes based on chemistry and the way the actor interacts with the entire canvas.
I, too, hope that she's happy now and has made peace with the past.

I read that he'd leaked spoilers to one of the rags. His time at AW (1990-91) doesn't correspond to Mimi's era of greatest damage (later in the '90s), however, so I don't know how true that is. I probably read this on AOL or rec.arts.tv.soaps.cbs (or misc). Maybe a Donna Shallotpeel exclusive.
I wish they'd kept him on at AW. I liked him so much more than RKK, and the person who followed him, well, let's not bother talking about him. I always wondered why they never got him looking at good on World Turns as he looked on AW.

I really think that she was just trumped by Henner being a bigger name. She certainly would have been a better fit in the role. I'm surprised the Thomasons never found another spot for her in anything, so I wonder if Kim handled being not cast in Evening Shade with her, um, usual tact and diplomacy.

RE: GL being the Reva show.
I have vague memories of the Dobson era as a youngster, loved the Marland era, stood by the show through the new few eras (Pat Falken Smith was at the helm when a house smashed into Bea Reardon's house and Company was born), fell in love with the Long and Ryder era; survived that awful year known as 1986 (and early 1987); rejoiced when Long came back in 1987 and stayed until early 1991; hung around for the rest...
anywho....
I recall in the Long era: The Four Muskateers and how each of them were paired off with others with in a few years -- Mindy/Kurt, Rick/Roxie, Beth/Lujack, Phillip/India...the unlikely romance of BIlly and Vanessa; Alexandra coming to town and making mincemeat out of Alan and then his return and then Phillip taking Alan down in 1988 and him ending up drunk on the country club floor still not happy. The magnificent Michelle Forbes as Sonni/Solita and later her all too brief paring with Zaslow.
Ed and Moe surviving his flings with Claire and Holly; Fletcher and Maeve's romance....Fletcher and CLAIRE! Barbados! The powder room showdowns with Alex and India; Warren.
ALL of the above made GL rich and memorable; if the show had all that going on, how was it also the Reva show?
It wasn't.

In all honesty name a show where one or two characters or couples didn't dominate the show for a certain of period of time? It's true that some, like Reva, had more staying power than others... but I can't really think of a show that was a true ensemble... maybe The Doctors. Please share other examples.

I know this thread is about P&G soaps, but since Genie was brought up: I liked her a lot on AMC. She would have been more popular on AMC if she hadn’t been saddled with boring Jeremy and David. (David Rampal, played by hot Trent Bushey—WHET???—not David Hayward). Even though Ceara was somehow Myrtle’s niece, she was never mentioned again after she left, IIRC, not even at Myrt’s funeral.
Now, back to Midwestern towns.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | April 25, 2021 5:27 AM |
criminal that Ceara wasn't mentioned again like when Myrt died
What I love about GH is that characters off the canvas still have value and are referred to and pop up as story dictates, e.g. Shawn (Sean?) Butler coming back onto GH
Carlivati had a line in an episode where Monica comes home and tells someone that she was playing bridge with Gail, Lesley and Audrey.
We were never going to see that scene as Susan Brown and Rachel may have stopped working at that point, but just knowing those four favorites were together playing cards, dishing and having lunch made me feel good.

I assume because he was completely wrong for the role. Ada's dish towel had more chemistry with Sandra Ferguson than Markel did. Unfortunately, his successor, Brian Lane Green, was even worse.

He wasn't supposed to have chemistry with her. His Sam was all about Olivia. I forget the actress' name, but they had chemistry that was off the charts. Do you not recall the Santa Claus/shower scene? It's one of the very few reasons I wish I'd held onto a VCR and the tape it was on.

by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 25, 2021 4:17 PM |
R129 You make a valid point
BUT
There was a lot of that time frame where Reva's story played 3 or 4 days a week. When Vanessa was maybe on 1 day a week at the time. That's where the imbalance was felt.
And as I've said before it wasn't just Reva/Kim. Phillip was one of a handful of characters Pam played at the expense of others. Josh and Rick.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | April 25, 2021 4:20 PM |
I think you're may be ignoring how much fan response plays into who is played 3 or 4 times a week versus 1 time a week. I'm not saying that Vanessa wasn't a popular character, but she was nowhere near Reva. Same with the Phillip character. If Grant is getting 4 or 5 bags of mail a week, you make sure he is heavy in story.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | April 25, 2021 4:41 PM |
I think most of the 'imbalance' complaints come from Zimmer's stint starting 1995 and on. After about 1997/1998 when the clone was conceived of (no pun intended) it was like all bets were off. If you weren't in Reva's primary story or one of her satellite stories you were in no man's land. They were juggling an entire show's cast in the 10 minutes left over by non-Reva-centric plots.
And other stories/characters DID get fan mail, sometimes out of all proportion to their air time, because people wanted to see more of them (Maeve/Vanessa was one specifically).
by Anonymous | reply 138 | April 25, 2021 5:09 PM |
I'd love to know what the fan mail situation was during Martha Byrne's heyday as Lily. Were there fraus and fraus-in-training who were just hanging on her every move a la the good people of Marland-era Oakdale, or was her popularity largely limited to the writer(s)?
by Anonymous | reply 139 | April 25, 2021 5:52 PM |
At a certain I think shows like GL just said fuck it and just wrote what they wanted to write. For example, have you ever heard anybody say 'I loved Buzz'? Constant complaints there too about the over exposure of the character, the air time, the actor's performance (spitting, arms flailing) and the sacrificing of other characters to make room for his.
And yet if you watch any of the Locher Rooms with the writers, they practically get a hard on thinking about him. Their faces light up.
I think writers loved these clean slate (Buzz) and outlandish (Reva) characters that they could do anything with.

R139 When I first switched to ATWT from OLTL in 1998, the first thing I saw was Lily and Diago's wedding. It hooked me. I didn't mind the focus on Lily, but that was primarily because more Lily meant more Lucinda and I absolutely loved her. I switched from OLTL because it was when TPTB decided to let Dorian go, Lucinda was my replacement because she was older, fun, strong, and morally gray.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | April 25, 2021 6:26 PM |
R141 so many of the suits thought all any younger fan wanted to see was young characters.
I remember one of the soap academics doing a survey of like 100 college age soap watchers - some existing, others introduced to the show through a class - and for ATWT the characters they liked best were Lucinda and Margo.
It doesn't mean we need the whole show to be 80 year olds, but they always took away the more complex characters for vapid bags of hair who could barely burp out a line of dialogue.

I was sort of in and out of the show during Rauch's run, but how did Maeve Kinkead respond to Rauch running the show, given their complicated history? Didn't she leave either shortly before he took over or shortly afterwards and then came back.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | April 25, 2021 6:42 PM |
Maeve was on her leave of absence when Rauch took over GL. Many thought she wouldn't return, but alas, Rauch had proclaimed himself a new man, was now married to a respectable woman, and his womanizer days were supposedly behind him. I think Maeve felt that way as well, and she returned in 1997 as promised.
I think his perverted habits returned ultimately, not by sexually harassing people behind the scenes (that I know of), but in his storytelling (if we can call it that). The lurid, trashy crap he'd been known for in previous runs was back - stripper stories, loud, trashy colors on the women who all had their tits hanging out, formulaic triangles all over the place, and so forth.
Maeve in particular got 'you're old' dialogue and Vanessa contemplated plastic surgery. It was interesting to watch and one couldn't help but wonder if it was intentional, given his history with Maeve.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | April 25, 2021 6:55 PM |
In terms of Maeve she denied there was any bad blood between her and Rauch. In terms of Maeve being on less, while Kim Zimmer was on, Maeve didn't seem to have a problem with it.

That was the problem = he was suppose to have chemistry with Amanda. She was one of the shows leading lady and Olivia was supporting.
You could change the story by making Sam & Olivia the new super-couple, but TPTB wanted a Sam/Amanda super-couple
If Danny Markel wasn't clicking with one of the leading lady of the show, then you have to recast., Unfortunately their recast of Markel was even worse, so they just gave up.

I know the second time Maeve left it was because she didn't want to color her hair any longer. She was having issues with the chemicals. Perhaps a wise worry on her part since she battled cancer not long after that.

I wasn't upset over ATWT bringing some AW actors over because it brought everything full circle. Another World, as evidenced by the title, was created to be a spin-off/companion of As The World Turns, but CBS didn't have space on the schedule. That is one reason I always thought it was horrible that they ended up airing opposite one another. But, they could have sent the characters to Guiding Light, because it was established early on that GL, AW, and ATWT all exist in the same universe, Mitchell Dru from ATWT was one of the early characters on AW, and Mike and Hope Bauer spent a year on AW in 1966.
Through Mitchell Dru, that also makes AW, ATWT, and GL, part of the same universe as The Brighter Day.
I enjoy characters crossing over, just as I enjoyed OLTL characters moving to GH. To me, while the shows are cancelled, the characters aren't. We might not get to see what is happening in Springfield, Oakdale, Bay City, Llanview, Pine Valley, etc... everyday, but to me they are still there having adventures we just aren't getting to share in them.

CBS was trying to counter program against Passions by trying to grab some of the angry AW fans. The other networks, for whatever reason, seemed terrified of Passions. The AW4 just seemed out of place on ATWT. But to be honest I was sort annoyed with Jake by that point in the first place, because they sort of ruined his character to make him the hero of Bay City. They just white-washed every interesting thing out of the character to turn him into something he wasn't. But then, they also took all the spark out of Carl Hutchins. But I will say that second Evan Frame could get it any time he wanted it.

Reva and Josh were about to get back together but she didn't want to tear apart Annie and the kids - who had grown to love Annie - so she marries Buzz as a 'I don't love you any more' move against Josh.

Did we see Reva and Buzz marry onscreen, or did they have to change the script after Deas and Zimmer devoured the church set?
by Anonymous | reply 200 | April 27, 2021 3:52 AM |
I think Buzz and Reva married off screen.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | April 27, 2021 1:58 PM |
R200 That's why they eventually had to move into the Broadcast Center. Zim and Deas ate the old studio.

And here I thought that was good ol' Snaggletooth herself, Miss Laura Wright.
Poor GH fans. They have to tolerate not only Snags but her boyfriend/beard, too.

I know Reva and Josh, but who was the other half to Reva's other super-couple? The Larkin Malloy character? I didn't watch GL as much as I did ATWT (and for a time, AW).
by Anonymous | reply 204 | April 27, 2021 5:06 PM |
R204 Yeah, Reva and Kyle were really the closest Reva ever got to competition for Josh. When Robert Newman left it was as if he hadn't even been there for all the time Kyle was on. Then Robert and Josh returned, and they wanted to do a triangle with Josh/Kyle/Reva and even promoted it a little in the soap press, but apparently before Robert even had his first day back Larkin Malloy ended up leaving the show (and supposedly on not great terms).
But Reva and Kyle were very romantic, very super couple-ish. I can think of no other romantic partner to Reva that even came close. (Certainly wasn't ol' Jeffy O'Neill.)

R193 Don’t forget that James E. Reilly was considered a genius and a miracle worker at the time for his work on DAYS. He had drastically increase that show’s ratings and made it the water cooler soap of the 90s. I can see why the networks were threatened by Passions before Passions started. Passions definitely hurt JER’s reputation.

we don't care and won't care, ever

There never was a funnier, sacrilegious storyline like Princess Diana and Sheridan on Passions. JER aced that one.

I think Logan once wrote that watching Deas and ZImmer was like watching two rottweilers fighting over a ham sandwich

I love Justin Deas as Keith on Santa Barbara, but for some reason Buzz just didn't translate to me. But to be honest, I was a fan of the Coopers. And didn't they have to fire a bunch of people just to be able to afford his asking price?
by Anonymous | reply 210 | April 27, 2021 7:07 PM |
R170, that's the rumor.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | April 27, 2021 7:11 PM |
Since he came up, what was the deal with Larkin Malloy? Was he one of those actors who expected to escape the soap genre and resented not being able to, a nice-enough guy unfortunately treated like a commodity (by P&G and/or ABC), both, neither, or something else entirely?
by Anonymous | reply 212 | April 27, 2021 11:22 PM |
[quote] And didn't they have to fire a bunch of people just to be able to afford his asking price?
NO ONE was fired to afford Justin Deas salary
Beverlee McKinsey had left August of 1992 (with a year left on her contract)
Justin Deas joined the show in February 1993
So McKinsey salary went to Justin Deas

I thought Bev was at the end of her contract when she gave her notice... I didn't know she had a year left! I never thought Marj was a good fit but I guess your first is usually your favorite... Judi was always Beth in my head for example but I did enjoy the 1st 2 Mindys

[quote] I thought Bev was at the end of her contract when she gave her notice... I didn't know she had a year left!
In her contract she only had to give P&G eight weeks notice if she ever wanted to quit. Just before she left on vacation she noticed her last filming day was only six weeks to her next contract cycle (actors have either 13 or 26 week cycles)
So since GL filmed 2 weeks in advance, her last day was exactly 8 weeks notice.
She had one year left on her contract, and Bev felt life is too short to hang around for another year.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | April 27, 2021 11:53 PM |
Would Bev have stayed if Bob Calhoun was still the producer. The way she described her departure, she was annoyed with JFP AND the direction of the character. I think she probably would have at least stayed to the end of her contract-the way she left was a fuck you to Jill Phelps.
by Anonymous | reply 216 | April 28, 2021 12:46 AM |
I gave Passions a few chances, but I couldn't get into it because it was so inconsistent in tone. At first I watched hoping it would be like Dark Shadows, but it was too light and comedic, and the Princess Diana story was just a tasteless way to start off the show. To me it seemed like a mashup of the worst of Dark Shadows and Sunset Beach, without the charm of either.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | April 28, 2021 1:04 AM |
R216 I don't think it was a personal Fuck You but JFP had definitely changed the Nick/Mindy/Alex story and made Alex more of a villain in it. It was popular so it was often on 4 to 5x a week and Beverlee asked for a break, but Jill said no. So Beverlee was through with it.
She'd pretty much been working nonstop (with only a year off) since 1971, so she was done.

In hindsight, it's both hilarious and sad that the soap world put so much stock in PASSIONS. The wheels fell off that bike rather quickly and with nothing left, the show went for self-conscious self-parody (which never, ever works).
by Anonymous | reply 219 | April 28, 2021 3:55 AM |
If it was a personal FU to Jill maybe because Bev felt Jill was doing a personal FU to her?
I don't it when someone takes charge of their life b/c they're being treated poorly, they're accused of doing an FU.
Jill knows how to produce episodes and tighten budgets and make a splash. But I've never once watched her show and thought: wow, this is great!
Maybe before she gets her hands all over it and dumps a bunch of people and brings in her pals.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | April 28, 2021 4:16 AM |
Has there been one soap that Jill Phelps left in better shape than it was when she was hired. She seemed to decimate every soap she produced.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | April 28, 2021 5:02 AM |
R221 I'd say no. For some inexplicable reasons some shows under her tended to win awards and have an uptick in viewers, but then the new wore off and they were left worse off. She is like a used car dealer that comes along and paints all the old beat-up cars on the lot, yeah they sell a few more for awhile but then people figure out its the same old crap with new paint and they quit buying. And, before the authorities can catch up to her she leaves town and goes to another town to do the same scam over again.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | April 28, 2021 5:09 AM |
If she wanted to be in nighttime so badly, why the hell didn't she just latch onto some show and leave the poor soap world alone?
by Anonymous | reply 223 | April 28, 2021 5:20 AM |
r222, Angelica at CBS was sold a bill of goods and let her come on to Y&R.
She paid big bucks to bring over Steve Burton and wedged him into a core family.
She burned down the Newman ranch and the place Nikki and Victor live in now does not befit them.
It's just awful.

I don't agree about JFP being a bad producer. Making a few unpopular decisions doesn't make one a bad producer. The only job more difficult than head writer in the soap world is that of the EP. You have to be able to balance the writer's vision with what the network and production company wants and the egos of 40 or so actors and a large crew, while staying on or under budget.
JFP gets tagged with a lot of things that some EP's never get called out for. Everyone has favorites they like to work with. Everyone has to make tough cast decisions and sometimes that means getting rid of a fan fave or two to make it work or to just shake up the canvas.
I will never say that Jill is perfect or without her problems, but she gets picked on where others get a free pass over and over. I know that getting rid of Maureen Bauer and Frankie Frame were unpopular choices, but the entire history of soap is littered with unpopular choices. It just happens.
by Anonymous | reply 225 | April 28, 2021 1:14 PM |
R222 That's actually a PERFECT description of her work at GL and AW.
Jill has a very specific feeling she brings to her shows. They usually get a specific look to them - darker, grittier - and darker stories. She was able to put a shine on good stories in her first year of GL, but after the writing team and a third of her lead players left, it was clear that the emperor had no clothes.
At the end of the day, Maureen's death was a beautifully told story. The damage wasn't that Maureen died; the damage was that shows believed they no longer needed a stable character, contract or recurring, to be that person to talk to/encouraging tentpole figure. Otherwise, watching other people's problems with no sense that it will ever get better or that someone cares about them just becomes anxiety inducing! (Kinda joking, kinda not)

R226, I agree Maureen's death was a beautifully told story, but when you're juggling all the stuff that EP's do, ask yourself this: you've lost Beverlee, Sheree and Kimberly; do you really want to lose Maureen?
No Reardons at the funeral and no Claire or Hope showing up to help fill the void in Michelle's life; instead, we got Achilles Buzz Cooper and Justin Deas ate more scenery than anyone I'd ever seen in my life.
GL lost so many key players, especially Beverlee; Marj was a lovely woman but she was never Alex. Within in a few years, I felt I was watching Santa Barbara with Marcy (Tangie eesh what a name), Bunny from SB, Christopher Norris, Elena. -- sure some of these were short-term roles, but Springfield had turned into Santa Barbara.
Jill knows how to trim a budget, produce episodes, and rehire her old pals (in fairness the name of the other person who does that in show biz is EVERYONE) , but never once have I ever said oh, good; JFP is on board; yay! Can't wait to watch.
At Y&R, she shoved Dylan on the show, tying him to Nikki and Paul, having him save puppies from burning barns, etc Also, she burned down the Newman ranch, and made the show unwatchable. I'm no Billy Miller fan, but they let him walk b/c his demands were so high and then they hired Justin Hartley who also had high demands...what's the diff?
Oh, and Jill painted Kay's house battleship blue/gray so it could be home to nuBilly Jason Thompson; Jason has to be the most miscast actor on soaps in a while; he's simply not Billy.
