“Cruel Summer”- New 90s-set teenage thriller series looks SO GOOD!

It debuts soon, and looks so good! I will def be watching

. It looks like a dark, serialized version of Mean Girls.

I fast forwarded looking for the hot lead guy of the show, and it’s Richard Madden’s bottom boy toy Froy? 😂

by Anonymousreply 104/10/2021

R1 they’re just friends!

by Anonymousreply 204/10/2021

This looks fun.

by Anonymousreply 304/10/2021

R3 agree. Looking forward to it

by Anonymousreply 404/10/2021

That looks more like a movie than a TV show and I really want to see it.

by Anonymousreply 504/10/2021

Jessica Biel is working behind the camera now? Good for her. This looks good

by Anonymousreply 604/10/2021

Some shots remind me of IKWYDLS.

by Anonymousreply 704/11/2021

R7 hmmm yeah. I see that too.

by Anonymousreply 804/11/2021

by Anonymousreply 904/11/2021

It’s first episode airs on Freeform April 20, and is available on Hulu the next day every week.

by Anonymousreply 1004/11/2021

The acting in the trailer did not impress me, though that is hardly unusual for a teen drama.

by Anonymousreply 1104/11/2021

Jessica Biel has a face for behind the camera.

by Anonymousreply 1204/11/2021

Maybe they'll make a musical version with all the Glee kids!

Oh wait . . . they're all old. Or over. Or dead.

by Anonymousreply 1304/11/2021

I've never seen this before, but all the acting of Froy comes right from his chin! It's like all you can see when he's on the screen.

by Anonymousreply 1404/11/2021

It's interesting they went with Garbage's Stupid Girl when the most obvious choice for a track (even when it's from the 80s) is right there in the title.

by Anonymousreply 1504/11/2021

R2 The right word for Richard's very young friend actors is roommate

by Anonymousreply 1604/11/2021

R15 I think Stupid Girl is fitting for the lead character.

R14 it hasn’t debuted yet.

by Anonymousreply 1704/11/2021

R15 There are even a 90's version of the song by Ace of base but the show is set between 1993 and 1995 so it's before that version.

Stupid girl is a 1995 song

by Anonymousreply 1804/11/2021

Well, duh! I know they wanted to go for a 90s song. But they still picked a show title that's more in tune with an 80s song from Bananarama.

by Anonymousreply 1904/11/2021

But the 90s song chosen is more in tune with the plot of the series

by Anonymousreply 2004/11/2021

Why do you think it looks good? I just thought I'd try to watch it for Froy.

by Anonymousreply 2104/11/2021

It looks fun and like something that would hold my attention.

Who cares about Froy?

by Anonymousreply 2204/11/2021

Is that the Garbage version of "Stupid Girl" or a cover? I couldn't tell if they were Shirley Manson's vocals remixed or not.

The song was and is genius. The series? We'll see.

PS: the song was used before to good effect under the opening credits of IN HER SHOES in 2005.

by Anonymousreply 2304/11/2021

R22 Yeah, why care about who the actors are on a TV show? It's not important. Maybe you enjoy set design.

by Anonymousreply 2404/11/2021

Thanks for posting this OP

It looks like it will be a good show

by Anonymousreply 2504/11/2021

To be honest, this is a Freeform show. Not many of them are good. But here's hoping.

by Anonymousreply 2604/11/2021

[Quote] Jessica Biel has a face for behind the camera.

It was her body that got all the attention in the early 00s.

[Quote] Yeah, why care about who the actors are on a TV show? It's not important. Maybe you enjoy set design.

Lots of people watch a show because they're interested in the storyline regardless of who's in it.

The twink is fuckable.

by Anonymousreply 2804/12/2021

Who is the twink?

by Anonymousreply 2904/12/2021

[quote]Lots of people watch a show because they're interested in the storyline regardless of who's

Maybe they should just read, then. Actors act out the storyline and it matters who they are.

by Anonymousreply 3004/12/2021

It matters how good they are at playing these roles. Their fame status only is good for drawing attention to the project and people giving it a try because of that. Then it's up the project itself to keep the audience interested, or it will leave one by one.

by Anonymousreply 3104/12/2021

Yeah, their skill matters, and that they fit the role, not their star status

by Anonymousreply 3204/12/2021

Froy went to London to do a media tie in with Bananarama for the launch of Cruel Summer next week.

by Anonymousreply 3304/12/2021

R33 But the media only really cares about his picnic with his pal Madden

by Anonymousreply 3404/12/2021

[quote] Froy went to London to do a media tie in with Bananarama for the launch of Cruel Summer next week.

Why would he go to London to do a media tie-in? Isn't this a show on Freeform (US TV)?

by Anonymousreply 3504/12/2021

R35 you’re joking. Right?

by Anonymousreply 3704/12/2021

[Quote] Maybe they should just read, then. Actors act out the storyline and it matters who they are.

Uh huh. That's how shows like Stranger Things or My Robot or Lost took off 🙄

by Anonymousreply 3804/13/2021

Quite praiseworthy.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 3904/13/2021

[quote]you’re joking. Right?

R37 No. It surprises me Froy would be sent in the middle of a pandemic to do something in England with an 80s band to promote his 90s show that takes place in Texas. What's the tie-in about? What does it involve?

by Anonymousreply 4004/13/2021

R40 that’s not what’s weird. It’s weird you think that because it’s an American series that it will only air in America...

by Anonymousreply 4104/13/2021

The roommates were spotted again today in London...

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 4204/13/2021

R41 What's weird is you think you know what my thoughts are. I know the series is not only going be seen in America. Though actually it *will* only "air" in America because in the rest of the word it won't be broadcast, it will be streaming. But I just meant that seems like a flimsy tie-in and unlikely reason for him to be shipped to London all expenses paid. But I keep asking what is the actual publicity tie-in that Froy is going to be doing, and so far the only reply is a video of Bananrama's Cruel Summer.

by Anonymousreply 4304/14/2021

Like he will have enough spare time to do more than having Madden's dick inside him.

by Anonymousreply 4404/14/2021

R44 we are just roommates

by Anonymousreply 4504/14/2021

And we all know how he pays his part of the rent.

by Anonymousreply 4604/14/2021

Who is the twink? WHO IS THE TWINK?

Are you serious?

by Anonymousreply 4804/14/2021

First reviews are in and they're actually good. Froy posted one on his story today.

by Anonymousreply 4904/15/2021

I feel kind of bad for the girl whose part was recast after the pilot, Mika Abdalla. Her part was recast with Olivia Holt.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 5004/15/2021

Why do you feel bad? That’s normal.

by Anonymousreply 5104/15/2021

This seems like it should be a limited series rather than open-ended.

by Anonymousreply 5204/15/2021

That blonde girl in OP's link looks like Ava Philippe.

by Anonymousreply 5304/15/2021

This reminds me we had a thread about the cop in the Cruel Summer video.

by Anonymousreply 5404/15/2021

[quote]Why do you feel bad? That’s normal.

I used to be an actor and she seems nice, so even though it's normal, I have empathy that she probably got very excited about playing the lead in a series and then she was dropped after the pilot. For Olivia Holt who's in everything.

by Anonymousreply 5504/15/2021

[quote]This seems like it should be a limited series rather than open-ended.

Isn't it? I thought it was.

by Anonymousreply 5604/15/2021

Yeah, well Big Little Lies started out that way, but look what happened.

by Anonymousreply 5704/15/2021

R57 Big little lies is based on a novel. The first season was that, the novel. Then it was a success and they decided to continue (in terms of quality it was not a good idea)

by Anonymousreply 5804/16/2021

Does anyone know if this show will air in Europe? Will it be avilable for streaming, in that case, where? Netflix? HBO Nordic? Can't find info about this anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 5904/16/2021

So the premiere is a few days off, but will this be the official viewing thread?

by Anonymousreply 6004/16/2021

Of course, r60. Don’t be silly.

by Anonymousreply 6104/16/2021

R60 yes. No need to make a new thread for this.

R59 it will be available on Hulu in the states the day after it airs on tv. So it airs on Tuesdays, and will be on Hulu on Wednesday

by Anonymousreply 6204/16/2021

R59 It will be available internationally on Amazon Prime Video

by Anonymousreply 6304/17/2021

Here's more

by Anonymousreply 6404/17/2021

R63 Thank you. I'm Norwegian, don't have access to Hulu here.

by Anonymousreply 6504/17/2021

So, it looks like two episodes drop tonight at 3:00 AM on Hulu.

by Anonymousreply 6604/20/2021

Begins tonight at 9 est on Freeform

by Anonymousreply 6704/20/2021

I didn’t know ABC Family changed its name to Freeform. I don’t think I’ve watched it since the early days of The Fosters.

by Anonymousreply 6804/20/2021

I loved that soap The Fosters

by Anonymousreply 6904/20/2021

I don't usually watch teen shows, but I may have to give this one a try, as this is, like, my era.

by Anonymousreply 7004/20/2021

R68 How could you miss PLL?

by Anonymousreply 7104/20/2021

R71 it started on ABC Family

by Anonymousreply 7204/20/2021

It’s starting now

by Anonymousreply 7304/20/2021

Unattractive girl has a very hunky brother!

by Anonymousreply 7404/20/2021

She’s not unattractive a year later

by Anonymousreply 7504/20/2021

Talk about the size of Froy’s dick at the roller rink.

by Anonymousreply 7604/20/2021

Froy is given a lot more to do than I thought he would have been so far in episode 1.

by Anonymousreply 7704/20/2021

The popular girl is going to have a relationship with the new vice principal right?

by Anonymousreply 7804/20/2021

R78 I think so.

I’m enjoying this premiere, although I can see all the time hopping bothering some people

by Anonymousreply 7904/20/2021

Do they do those different filters during filming, or is that added in post?

by Anonymousreply 8004/20/2021

R80 pretty sure it’s post and they add filters. Although I have seen in some shows they use them while filming. But who knows about this one.

by Anonymousreply 8104/20/2021

Wait so Kate is alive? Or is she alive and then disappears again?

by Anonymousreply 8204/20/2021

So, it’s turning into Room?

by Anonymousreply 8304/20/2021

R83 no.

People really are held captive. Room isn’t the first time that has happened

by Anonymousreply 8404/20/2021

The pedo criminal Principal is hot

by Anonymousreply 8504/20/2021

This network should be called Free Fall, Free Form sounds like an updated version of the silly Color Forms pastime.

by Anonymousreply 8604/20/2021

Oh Christ, FF is still hosting the 700 Club with a disclaimer before hand? How have they not driven that show off the air by now?

by Anonymousreply 8704/20/2021

R87 many still watch it.

by Anonymousreply 8804/20/2021

So, was that a fourth filter for a flashback within one of the stories, or just the same filter for that particular year? And the showing of the shoe on the stair indicates he doesn’t abduct her that night, but a different night in that first summer?

by Anonymousreply 8904/20/2021

R89 I like that they’re using a different filter for each year.

I believe so. Her outfit and shoes were completely different from the night they met. So she’s lying and they probably did “get to know each other” before being abducted.

by Anonymousreply 9004/20/2021

PS I enjoyed the first half of episode 1 greatly and then the end, but somewhere in the middle the pacing went off.

But episode 2 was very good!

by Anonymousreply 9104/20/2021

I had to force myself through episode 1, but 2 was better. I find in a lot of these shows the parents are the better actors and make it more interesting when they get some screen time. Like the mother of Hanna Baker in 13 Reasons Why.

by Anonymousreply 9204/20/2021

R92 well they usually are a lot more experienced and have been acting much longer, but you probably also can understand them a lot more than the teens.

by Anonymousreply 9304/20/2021

R92 Why? Maybe you’re a big Shonda Rhimes fan?

by Anonymousreply 9404/20/2021

I was totally getting Ezra and Aria vibes with the vice principal and blond girl meet up.

by Anonymousreply 9504/20/2021

The vice principal is kinda hot.

Kate is the blond girl. It’s an easy name lmao

I found the episode focused on her much more interesting than the one focused on main chick

by Anonymousreply 9604/20/2021

Blake Lee, who plays the Vice Principal, is gay, btw.

[quote] well they usually are a lot more experienced and have been acting much longer, but you probably also can understand them a lot more than the teens.

The teens on the show aren't really teens. They're mostly in their 20s. I don't agree with what you're saying. There can be brilliant young actors and mediocre adult actors. I actually think it's because they cast the younger parts for their looks, and also because they usually do the "TV actor" underacting that's boring.

[quote] Kate is the blond girl. It’s an easy name lmaoI found the episode focused on her much more interesting than the one focused on main chick

I think there are two manin girls, Kate is one of the two. Each episode will be told from alternatig points of view, one girl vs the other.

by Anonymousreply 9704/20/2021

by Anonymousreply 9804/20/2021

The Kate girl, to me, is totally channeling Kate Bosworth.

by Anonymousreply 9904/20/2021

The Kate girl is super pretty, especially in the 1993 scenes.

by Anonymousreply 10004/20/2021

Wow great opener.

by Anonymousreply 10104/20/2021

Jessica Biel created?

I'm going to have to wait for the reviews on this one. Props for hiring Froy, though.

by Anonymousreply 10204/20/2021

I like that the trailer deceived us. Kate isn’t dead. Froyo isn’t on other chicks side and sympathetic to her like the trailer makes you think...

It’s all interesting

by Anonymousreply 10304/20/2021

R102 or you can watch like an adult and form your own opinion

by Anonymousreply 10404/20/2021

Did the roommates Froyo and Richard Madden watch the premiere together?

by Anonymousreply 10504/20/2021

R102 She slapped her name on it. It looks like after the Sinner did better with her behind the camera she wants be produce now instead, a lot less work I’m sure.

by Anonymousreply 10604/20/2021

I guess I'm not watching closely enough. Find it confusing so far.

by Anonymousreply 10704/20/2021

I thought maybe as a Texas boy Froy was being typecast, but there was very little Texas about it beyond Kate’s mom and a few football is important references. And his performance wasn’t very Texas centric.

by Anonymousreply 10804/20/2021

The whiplash time jumping is going to get old real fast.

by Anonymousreply 10904/20/2021

[quote]Froyo isn’t on other chicks side and sympathetic to her like the trailer makes you think...

Doesn't he punch her in the trailer though?

Froy was ok. He was fine, but rather bland, so far.

by Anonymousreply 11004/20/2021

What is a wealthy/middle class suburban Texas town like r108? I’ve been to TX many times and each part feels very different from the next. Not to mention each town within a city.

Most shows or movies don’t get the atmosphere etc. right in shows set in the past. This is why I love Once Upon a Time in Hollywood so much. Tarantino really brought 1969 LA back to life. It felt and looked just like it. It’s incredible.

That’s rare.

But also, this is why you should cast a young man from TX to play a Texan. Not some city boy from LA.

by Anonymousreply 11104/20/2021

The trailer doesn’t show who punches her. During the episode you see it’s him.

by Anonymousreply 11204/20/2021

That was an awfully big house for a vice principal's salary.

by Anonymousreply 11304/20/2021

R110 Well, for all intents and purposes, Froy is playing the ingenue role here, but I think they will subvert it at some point like they are doing with the other characters.

by Anonymousreply 11404/20/2021

To complain about it not feeling Texas... the show doesn’t even disclose what town in what city etc. it’s in. It just said Texas. And they do that on purpose for people like you who need to nitpick. Because not all of TX feels the same and it’s a huge state.

by Anonymousreply 11504/20/2021

Highland Park? I've never been there, but I have well-off friends who live there.

by Anonymousreply 11604/20/2021

Froy is from Highland Park

by Anonymousreply 11704/20/2021

R113 I said the same thing but then my significant other said “he just moved there. He may have made a lot elsewhere and then bought that house, like many do. Houses are cheap in TX and even cheaper in the 90s”.

So I just assumed he moved there from a place where he made more and saved.

by Anonymousreply 11804/20/2021

Texas Monthly on the Texasness of Skylin.

by Anonymousreply 11904/20/2021

I was gonna say, it looks like suburban TX towns I’ve seen in Austin and Dallas.

by Anonymousreply 12004/20/2021

Makes sense R118. I forget Texas housing has historically been affordable.

Someone above mentioned the actor who plays the vp is gay. He pinged to me right away.

by Anonymousreply 12104/20/2021

R121 Haha yup

by Anonymousreply 12204/20/2021

Did I read somewhere that they shot the pilot, got picked up and then went back and dropped one of the actresses and started from scratch?

by Anonymousreply 12304/20/2021

How dare they do that!

by Anonymousreply 12404/20/2021

Thank God for a new Pretty Little Liars Teen type of mystery show. I am a sucker for those.

by Anonymousreply 12504/20/2021

I actually liked it. It was interesting

by Anonymousreply 12604/21/2021

Needs more, or any for that matter, post sex scenes of Froy in vintage boxers.

by Anonymousreply 12704/21/2021

Instead of say “You Go Girl!” that necklace should have said “You in Danger Gurl!”

by Anonymousreply 12804/21/2021

Everyone in this show sounds like they're from Glendale which is probably where they shot this shit anyway.

Terrible use of soundtrack too.

Using Dreams from the Cranberries as background music and not taking advantage of its power shows lack of vision. See My so-called Life for reference on how to use that song properly. As a matter of fact, many songs waste their power in this pilot, because they work as background music only.

[quote] Do they do those different filters during filming, or is that added in post?

Photography is actually done on location and requires a lot of things. This isn't just a filter like on Instagram, what is done later is basically color correction, which all shows do regardless.

by Anonymousreply 12904/21/2021

R129 The entire series was shot on location in the Dallas area, including interiors.

R123 Yhey replaced Mika Abdalla with Olivia Holt.

by Anonymousreply 13004/21/2021

R130 rightfully so.

by Anonymousreply 13104/21/2021

Having Jeanette randomly watching news reports is kind of cheating on the show’s time structure, especially when the videotaped scene melds into wide-screen, high-definition digital video.

by Anonymousreply 13204/21/2021

R131 Probably but how do you know if you didn't see the pilot?

by Anonymousreply 13304/21/2021

Oh good, just what we need. Another "soapy teen drama"....Why would data lounger care about a show clearly aimed at the under 18 set...This looks like more crap.

by Anonymousreply 13404/21/2021

R134 Why do you care what other people do? You must know that shows aimed at one demographic are not just watched by that demographic alone.

by Anonymousreply 13504/21/2021

If they were aiming only at teens, why set it in the 1990s?

by Anonymousreply 13604/21/2021

R136 Maybe partly because the plot wouldn't work if everyone had smart phones and instant communication.

by Anonymousreply 13704/21/2021

Good point, r137.

It’s similar to Biel’s Sinner in that as the mystery unfolds our opinions of the characters keep shifting.

by Anonymousreply 13804/21/2021

I liked the premiere but the second episode was much better. Kate makes a far more interesting character

by Anonymousreply 13904/21/2021

R139 I thought so too, plus her mom added some energy.

I have a question - didn't I Kate hear her dad say something sexual on the phone to the woman Kate thought he was having an affair with? Then later she found them together in an innocent conversation and felt like she had misjudged him. So what did he actually say on the phone?

by Anonymousreply 14004/21/2021

sorry, I meant, "didn't Kate hear her dad say..."

by Anonymousreply 14104/21/2021

R140 he said it would be nice because it’s been a long time since he had sex and he can’t wait to see her etc. so she assumed he was planning on having sex with the woman but in reality she is a friend of his and was helping him plan a surprise trip for his wife/her mom.

by Anonymousreply 14204/21/2021

Froyo is doing better than I thought he would. I liked him in episode 1.

by Anonymousreply 14304/21/2021

R142 Oh, ok, thanks. I think I thought about that but still wondered why he would tell a woman he's on the city council (? or something) with, that he hadn't had sex for a long time. That seemed like something you wouldn't say to someone you have that kind of relationship with.

by Anonymousreply 14404/21/2021

^-part of the mystery.

by Anonymousreply 14504/21/2021

R145 Oh, yeah, probably. To be honest I'm impatient with a show like this, I don't know if I can stick with it. Like, is it entertaining to have info withheld by the gimmick of only telling what happens on one day per year -- or just annoying? I'm not sure yet.

by Anonymousreply 14604/21/2021

R146 the mother and him know the woman he is speaking to. The mother tells Kate that the woman (who was a friend) was trying to get with her husband before they got married and this is partly why Kate thinks he is having an affair with her.

by Anonymousreply 14704/21/2021

The stepdad said "we haven't had sex in forever." The woman on the phone said "this is gonna be fun" and he said "I'm really looking forward to it." What Kate didn't know was that he was referring to not having had sex with her mom in forever and he and the other woman were looking forward to the fun of surprising the mom with a romantic cruise getaway.

Overall, I enjoyed the premiere although I sometimes had trouble keeping track of which timeline things were taking place in. I also felt like the main two girls were both generically pretty and sometimes slightly hard to keep straight. Though I'm sure that'll lesson as we get to know them better.

Regarding Jeanette seeing Kate at the VP's house, I'm guessing the mirrored basement hat Jeanette lingered in is actually two way mirrors concealing a secret room. Jeanette probably went down there while Kate was being held and Kate (not knowing the glass was two way mirrors) assumed she saw her when Jeanette really only saw her own reflection.

by Anonymousreply 14804/21/2021

R148 But, it looks like she gave Kate her necklace at some point, or is there the possibility she lost it? There us also the possibility that Jeanette was also being abducted by the principal, but got away.

by Anonymousreply 14904/21/2021

Didn't Jeanette dropped her necklace when she first went to the VP's house and was caught by him?

by Anonymousreply 15004/21/2021

R150 Don't think so, that happened early on during her birthday day when she received it, and it was commented on by Kate after the exercise class and at the dinner table by her family.

by Anonymousreply 15104/21/2021

She probably lost it when she threw those water balloons at that rich people party with her friends

by Anonymousreply 15204/21/2021

Need help keeping up with timelines? It’s easy simply based on how each girl looks or what Froyo is up to.

1993 - Jeanette is chubby and wears glasses with curly/frizzy hair. Kate has all blonde hair and is dating Froyo.

1994 - Jeanette now is more slim with no glasses and keeps her hair straight and it’s long. Kate has brown roots that show a lot. Froyo is now with Jeanette.

1995 - Jeanette looks like hell and now had Demi Lovato’s haircut. Kate has mostly brown hair. Froyo is now single and unhinged but trying to be there for Kate while wishing Jeanette dead, pretty much.

by Anonymousreply 15304/21/2021

Don’t call me Froyo.

by Anonymousreply 15404/21/2021

Thanks, r153. I’d noticed it all except Kate’s brown roots.

by Anonymousreply 15504/21/2021

To the person who bitched about the news tape she is watching going wide screen, it didn’t go widescreen on her TV. It went wide because it took us in that moment.

by Anonymousreply 15604/21/2021

So Kate set up Jeanette out of jealousy because she saw Jamie (Froy) kiss her?

Somehow I think Jamie loves Jeanette and this is why he has lost it.

by Anonymousreply 15704/21/2021

She saw him kiss her after she is rescued or before she vanished?

by Anonymousreply 15804/21/2021

[quote] To the person who bitched about the news tape she is watching going wide screen, it didn’t go widescreen on her TV. It went wide because it took us in that moment.

A moment which was outside their time structure.

And I did catch that her 1990s TV didn’t magically transform into a widescreen high definition TV, but thanks for the tip.

by Anonymousreply 16004/21/2021

Demi may try to cancel Froy next because his name reminds her of Froyo.

by Anonymousreply 16104/21/2021

OMG watching now!!!!! I love Froy so much I am drooling over every scene he’s in!!! Highly recommend this is binge watching!!!!

by Anonymousreply 16204/21/2021

Can two episodes be called binge watching? Back-to-back maybe.

by Anonymousreply 16304/21/2021

Yeah. He is saying it should be binged but that’s not possible yet

by Anonymousreply 16404/21/2021

So this is the Froy you've all been talking so much about. I don't get the fuss.

I'm not a big fan of teen dramas but since I was a teen in the 90s I thought I'd check it out. I'm liking it so far. I'm a fan of the actress playing Kate's striving mother. The way she was looking around during the country club party, to see if others were watching her, rang true.

by Anonymousreply 16504/21/2021

I like the show so far.

And I never found Froy attractive until this. I find him oddly hot in this

by Anonymousreply 16604/21/2021

The two girl look nothing alike.

[quote]The stepdad said "we haven't had sex in forever." The woman on the phone said "this is gonna be fun" and he said "I'm really looking forward to it." What Kate didn't know was that he was referring to not having had sex with her mom in forever and he and the other woman were looking forward to the fun of surprising the mom with a romantic cruise getaway.

Ok I guess it's just weird for a husband to say to another woman about his wife, "we haven't had sex in forever" -- it's kind of personal.

by Anonymousreply 16704/21/2021

They’re friends.....

by Anonymousreply 16804/21/2021

90s looked nothing like this.

by Anonymousreply 16904/21/2021

I wonder who on set was Froy’s bestie? Someone said the VP actor was gay, I wonder what the age difference was between them? The hunky bro is recently married, to a woman, but I like what we’ve seen of his best friends character p, but we no so little about him.

by Anonymousreply 17004/22/2021

[quote] I wonder who on set was Froy’s bestie? Someone said the VP actor was gay, I wonder what the age difference was between them?

Blake Lee is married to Ben Lewis (Arrow). They are the leads in Lifetime's first gay themed Christmas movie, The Christmas Setup co-starring Fran Drescher.

R168 Ok if you think the wife would be cool with her husband casually talking about their sex life to his female friend.

by Anonymousreply 17204/22/2021

R172 she doesn’t know. Since when does that stop a man from speaking about it...

by Anonymousreply 17304/22/2021

R169 funny you keep saying that when people who are from Dallas and lived there in the 90s say this is exactly what suburban towns in Dallas were like.

by Anonymousreply 17404/22/2021

The 90s looked EXACTLY like this.

by Anonymousreply 17504/22/2021

[quote]she doesn’t know. Since when does that stop a man from speaking about it...

Because their sex life is not other people's business? Unless he has the wife's permission to talk about it to someone else. But what do I know, I'm considerate of other people.

Anyway it seems like a plot contrivance, nothing more. It seemed contrived to me.

by Anonymousreply 17604/22/2021

r176. Friends tell their friends privat stuff all the time. It's just unheard of that a straight guy confides in a female friend unless it's a trick to fuck her. "Oh poor me, my wife doesn't understand me! We haven't had sex for quite a while! I'm so sad, so alone, so vulnerable right now!".

by Anonymousreply 17704/22/2021

But they exist. Friends share stuff with each other. This isn’t some new thing. R176 is acting like they’ve never heard of someone speaking about this sex life. Please. Stop it.

And he just said they haven’t had sex in a while. That’s all. You’re acting like he went into details.

by Anonymousreply 17804/22/2021

If you’re worried about plot contrivances, I’d be more bothered about why the broker, sorry, real estate agent as they were called back then, still has the keys to a house that already closed.

by Anonymousreply 17904/22/2021

R179 isn’t that a thing in TX? They keep the keys for a certain amount of time?

by Anonymousreply 18004/22/2021

I think something sinister will come out about Kate’s football hero stepdad.

by Anonymousreply 18104/22/2021

I’m sure he has many out to get him, as most wealthy black people do r181

by Anonymousreply 18204/22/2021

Thank god nobody's out to get poor black people. Or poor white people for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 18304/22/2021

Why would you keep the keys to a house that has been sold? That opens up all kinds of liability issues.

by Anonymousreply 18404/22/2021

[quote]But they exist. Friends share stuff with each other. This isn’t some new thing. [R176] is acting like they’ve never heard of someone speaking about this sex life. Please. Stop it.

And he just said they haven’t had sex in a while. That’s all. You’re acting like he went into details.

Why can't we just have differing opinions? It's just that personally I would have said, "Im looking forward to this vacation, we haven't spent time alone together." I wouldn't then add, baically, "We haven't fucked for a while". It's just tmi, but I didn't realize he and the other woman are close friends, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 18504/22/2021

An opinion would be “I would never do that. But if others do that is their business”. You’re legit acting like this is unheard of. That isn’t an “opinion”

by Anonymousreply 18604/22/2021

You're an asshole. In my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 18704/22/2021

Both of you, take a deep breath and ask “Is this important?”

by Anonymousreply 18804/22/2021

Froyo looks very good in this. That’s a first.

by Anonymousreply 18904/22/2021

Well, it looks like we’re having our own little Cruel Spring on here!

by Anonymousreply 19004/22/2021

Is there a petition to release the full cut of that incredibly important phone conversation? WE SIMPLY MUST HAVE IT!

by Anonymousreply 19104/22/2021

I would like to know if the original pilot is available for viewing?

by Anonymousreply 19204/22/2021

R192 move on

by Anonymousreply 19304/23/2021

I still can't believe that the actress that plays stuckup southern mom is the same actress from Joey. If I didn't came across it, I would have never recognized her.

by Anonymousreply 19404/23/2021

One thing that was really not believable is how the missing and then found girl is a stepdaughter of a retired NFL star yet no news mentioned that when talking about the kidnap

by Anonymousreply 19504/23/2021

I was quite impressed with the actress playing Jeanette. I thought she played the character in the three different stages exactly right.

Is it too much to hope that Froy ends up with the hunky dad?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 19604/23/2021

Yeah, I can't believe it took 196 posts to mention Michael Landes. Enough about Froyo Yogurt.

I was hoping the dad was going to get with the vice-principal.

by Anonymousreply 19704/23/2021

Updated statistics show only 2.1% of men are gay. 5% if you count closet cases.

In other words, most men aren’t gay. Enough.

by Anonymousreply 19804/24/2021

Um, in wokeness television they are so get lost.

by Anonymousreply 19904/24/2021

R198 What's this referring to?

by Anonymousreply 20004/24/2021

From does a great job in this. Never picked up that he was gay at all.

by Anonymousreply 20804/24/2021

R203 Yes, I know that, but they put everything but hardcore S&M porn on FF and it still hasn’t driving them away. How haven’t the viewers been so mortified to demand it not be on that channel?

by Anonymousreply 20904/24/2021

R209 Look up Freeform on Wikipedia and it will become clearer, it's explained there.

by Anonymousreply 21004/24/2021

Young Froy makes a convincing heterosexualist.

by Anonymousreply 21104/24/2021

He is heterosexual

by Anonymousreply 21204/24/2021

Watching now. The dad, brother, and boyfriend are all fine as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 21304/24/2021

The dad is an absolute DILF and he looks better with the bartender than with his wife

by Anonymousreply 21404/24/2021

Lots of hot closeted characters (and at least one actor) in this series

by Anonymousreply 21504/24/2021

Just watched the first two. It's so good so far! Should be a fun summer show :)

by Anonymousreply 21604/24/2021

R206 for a second there I thought that was a poster for Ringer.

by Anonymousreply 21704/25/2021

R215 ummmm

by Anonymousreply 21804/25/2021

Yeah, what are you talking about R215?

by Anonymousreply 21904/25/2021

Froy is the closeted actor but who are the closeted characters?

by Anonymousreply 22004/25/2021

Cruel Summer IS This Is US! Lol, I know where they’re coming from, but it’s ridiculous just cause it has three time frames.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 22104/25/2021

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 22204/25/2021

The show was originally called Last Summer and was only changed to Cruel Summer closer to the air date. Maybe that's why the soundtrack doesn't contain songs with "cruel summer" in the title.

by Anonymousreply 22304/25/2021

Frog projects seem to have midway name changes.

by Anonymousreply 22404/25/2021

The song “Stupid Girl” is more fitting as the title track than “Cruel Summer”

by Anonymousreply 22504/25/2021

R221 They got the clothes right. My sister (b. 1984) had that same red dress. She also wore a white shirt under it. (Remember when that was a look?)

by Anonymousreply 22604/25/2021

Like a jumper?

There were things about the clothes I didn't understand. People were talking about it in another forum. Like, tucking in the t shirt to the boxer shorts (Froy - "Jamie"). That never happened. Also, they had him lifting weights in jeans and a belt. (???) In general his grynge look was way too neat and tidy looking. I have no idea what some of the clothjes were on Allius Barnes and Harley Quinn Smith, who played Jeannette's nerdy friends. I never saw those in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 22704/25/2021

by Anonymousreply 22804/25/2021

R227 Yes, but it was a slip dress.

People remember all the plaid in the 90s, but girls were so many florals. A girl who rode my school bus used to mix floral patterns.

by Anonymousreply 22904/25/2021

I kind of liked the mid-2000s when boys and girls dressed alike, in skinny jeans, Converse, Vans, beanies, and flannel shirts - at least pop punk kids did, it was cute.

by Anonymousreply 23004/25/2021

I'm totally hooked. Man, I wish I could binge it.

by Anonymousreply 23104/25/2021

Both the lead actresses are good. The blonde I recognize from Cloak & Dagger

by Anonymousreply 23204/25/2021

Is Cloak and Dagger like Locke and Key?

by Anonymousreply 23304/25/2021

Yes. They’re all doing well.

Why are Kate’s two besties so unattractive? Is she one of those hot popular girls who only keeps girls less attractive than her around so she always is the prettiest?

by Anonymousreply 23404/25/2021

In real life school, are the popular girls always gorgeous?

by Anonymousreply 23504/25/2021

R235 not always

by Anonymousreply 23604/25/2021

R235 I grew up in a poor town, so the popular kids were the ones from wealthier families. One of the cheerleaders at my school was fat. But her father was a doctor.

by Anonymousreply 23704/26/2021

The lead girl has a deep annoying voice and isn't that pretty, even when she gets a makeover.

by Anonymousreply 23804/26/2021

Looks pretty cringey

by Anonymousreply 23904/26/2021

Tonight is episode 3! Can’t wait.

by Anonymousreply 24004/27/2021

I'm only watching this because I've followed Froy for a few years. I want to be able to talk about it to people. Other than that, the first episodes were just ok, for me. I'm not very into teen dramas anyway, but I liked some teen shows like 13 RW. I dn't think this seems to be on that level. Freeform shows are never that good.

by Anonymousreply 24104/27/2021

R241 But 13 RW was only good for one season.

by Anonymousreply 24204/27/2021

R242 I liked the second season also

by Anonymousreply 24304/27/2021

I think it’s well executed. It reminds me of the Harlan Coben dramas on Netflix but with teen characters as the leads.

by Anonymousreply 24404/27/2021

I like it.

Episode 3 is about to start

by Anonymousreply 24504/27/2021

Episode 3... it was terrific. I liked it a lot, actually

by Anonymousreply 24604/27/2021

by Anonymousreply 24704/27/2021

The way they call her Katy Kat is super fucking annoying.

by Anonymousreply 24804/27/2021

R248 many have awful nicknames

by Anonymousreply 24904/28/2021

What was that ending? What could she have possibly unleashed?

by Anonymousreply 25004/28/2021

I had no idea until just now that Harley Quinn Smith (Mallory) is Kevin Smith's daughter.

Episode 3 felt a little lacking compared to the first 2 episodes. Certain timeline things didn't make sense to me either. Like Jeanette's mom was watching the news in July 1995 that said Kate was getting ready to tell her story. But didn't we already see in June of 1995 that she told her story in that TV interview where she claimed Jeanette saw her and didn't help?

by Anonymousreply 25104/28/2021

Jeanette's mom was watching the news in '94. We haven't seen her in '95.

by Anonymousreply 25204/28/2021

Sorry, you're right, the middle time is '94, not '95. But still, I'm pretty sure the timeline when she was watching the story about Kate going ready to go public would have happened *after* she already did her interview.

by Anonymousreply 25304/28/2021

[quote]I had no idea until just now that Harley Quinn Smith (Mallory) is Kevin Smith's daughter.

The stupid name didn't give it away?

The dichotomy between how good Jeanette's '93 fat makeup is and how bad the '95 wig is...

I knew Vincent was a 'mo. The scene of the drag queen bartender letting them dance was adorable.

by Anonymousreply 25404/28/2021

We don’t know what day Kate gives the interview, so there is nothing to be confused about. We know she goes missing and then is found at the end of June, 1994, so it makes sense her interview would be in July.

by Anonymousreply 25504/28/2021

R254 I liked that scene too, it was sweet. I’m sure he’s terrified someone will find out he’s gay. Imagine being a black gay teen in 1994 Texas? Yikes.

by Anonymousreply 25604/28/2021

I didn't realize that the boyfriend is Froy's buddy. That adds a whole other level to things.

Have we seen Mallory at all in the 1995 parts?

by Anonymousreply 25704/28/2021

R257 we haven't seen Mallory in '95 yet, but we will

by Anonymousreply 25804/28/2021

I assume the mother runs away and abandons the family because of all this in 94

by Anonymousreply 25904/28/2021

I thought the mom was dead until the cute older brother told Jeannette to take her call

by Anonymousreply 26004/28/2021

I knew she was alive r260. It doesn’t feel like she died. But that she can’t handle this and leaves. She was always popular and beloved. She can’t handle all this negative attention and hate.

by Anonymousreply 26104/28/2021

the black husband looks like he'd have major sizemeat like that minister posted today.

by Anonymousreply 26204/28/2021

So, we're agreed, Jeanette is a total sociopath? I mean, told Mallory she'd flushed the pot when she kept some of it, even after Mallory was in trouble. Told Vince that she'd broken into the house repeatedly for the thrill of it...

by Anonymousreply 26304/28/2021

Keven Smith directed Harley Q. in a movie, didn't he? Yoga Hosers - Tyler Posey was her bofriend in that I think. Six degrees of Teen Wolf.

by Anonymousreply 26404/28/2021

I hate how they made 1995 look so grim and dark. Like it's alway cloudy and rainy. Everyone wears black for some reason, walls are painted black, sun never shines...

by Anonymousreply 26504/29/2021

Is Kevin sure he's the father? Harley Quinn looks more like Jason Mewes.

by Anonymousreply 26604/29/2021

R265 it’s because of all that is happening with the characters. 1995 is the darkest and most grim. It weather is symbolizing the situations that year.

by Anonymousreply 26704/29/2021

I just watched all 3 episodes in a row. Is 1995 Jeanette pregnant? They are going to great lengths to hide the lower half of her body.

by Anonymousreply 26804/29/2021

R268 wow I didn’t think of that. That would suck if part of why Froyo seems to want her dead is because she’s pregnant with his kid.

by Anonymousreply 26904/29/2021

Froyo? Is that the name of the guy who plays Jamie?

And I wonder what was the incident that caused Ben and Vincent to fall out in 1995? They were dancing so sweetly in 94 and a year later Ben didn't want to speak to Vincent. He blames Jeanette for something that happened. Do you think she outed them? And he lost his football career because of her?

by Anonymousreply 27004/29/2021

You must be new here if you don’t know who Froy is.

Yes, the actor who plays Jamie.

I also assume she outed him, even if not intentionally

by Anonymousreply 27104/29/2021

Oh I see he is DL famous. I am not new but I haven't been here in a while. He is cute.

The scene where Jeanette watches the show and tried to act like the girl on it was super creepy.

by Anonymousreply 27204/29/2021

Froyo is definitely a cutie.

by Anonymousreply 27304/29/2021

I don't get the love for Froy. At all.

by Anonymousreply 27404/29/2021

He didn't just slap Jeanette, he fucking punched her hard. That was shocking.

by Anonymousreply 27504/29/2021

by Anonymousreply 27904/29/2021

R267 I know why they are doing it. It just looks ridiculous and unrealistic.

by Anonymousreply 28004/29/2021

So what is Jessica Biel's involvement in this? Are they just using her name to attract more people?

by Anonymousreply 28104/29/2021

by Anonymousreply 29805/01/2021

by Anonymousreply 29905/01/2021

by Anonymousreply 30305/01/2021

I doubt Madden is even a Millionaire. He isn’t a name who is getting paid huge bucks. He’s being paid 6 figures of that Marvel movie. If it’s a hit he will most likely make a lot for the sequel.

by Anonymousreply 30405/01/2021

At least you don't deny being retarded.

by Anonymousreply 30505/01/2021

I’m not. He’s not openly gay. Most gays don’t know who he is. Being DL famous doesn’t mean shit to the rest of the world.

by Anonymousreply 30605/01/2021

Please keep your lunatic Froy obsessions to your lunatic threads and leave us discussing this series alone.

by Anonymousreply 30705/01/2021

Well, r306 answered my question.

And they don't even know it!

by Anonymousreply 30805/01/2021

I didn’t even know who Froy was before watching this. He isn’t who is attracting viewers. It’s the story and smart promotion

by Anonymousreply 30905/01/2021

Loving it. Has a very 13 reasons why vibe. Hard to wait to watch the episodes though.

by Anonymousreply 31005/01/2021

You had to bring up HIM!

by Anonymousreply 31105/01/2021

It seems to be a bit inspired by the tone13 Reasons Why-- though being summer, no one is in school. But it's a much cheaper-looking show - it seems like a much lower budget. 13 Reasons Why had a beautiful location (San Francisco area) and had amazing photography. This is somewhere in Texas but you can hardly tell. It could be anywhere. The cast overall seems less charismatic/talented to me, also.

by Anonymousreply 31205/01/2021

*tone of

by Anonymousreply 31305/01/2021

Maybe you would enjoy it more if you stopped comparing it to another show, which has no resemblance to this one other than it being about teens.

One is a “who is telling the truth?” and “what really happened?” situation and the other was literally a group of teens figuring out and dealing with the consequences of one of their peers killing themselves.

by Anonymousreply 31405/01/2021

R314 Well, it was R310 who said it had a 13 Reasons Why vibe, and I was responding to that comment. I don't get why you feel the need to shut down opinions just because they're critical of a show you happen to like. Is this thread just for fan boys of the show? I thought it was just about the show and we were free to express opinions other than "oooh it's sooo goood" but let me know if that's not true,

by Anonymousreply 31505/01/2021

It’s not about shutting down opinions, it’s about the fact that if you watched 13RW and you’re watching this, they’re not alike.

This is a lot closer to The Sinner or Secrets & Lies than 13 Reasons Why.

by Anonymousreply 31605/01/2021

The show has similarities to 13 Reasons Why because it cuts back and forth between time periods by using things like haircuts and other physical traits to let the audience know what time frame they are in. Jeanette even seems to be wearing the same ugly wig Hannah wore in 13RW. It reminds me very much of 13RW in that way. Also it has the Rashomon-like premise of people telling different versions of the same story, that is common to both shows. And of course it's about teens and parents. There may be other similarities, I don't know.

by Anonymousreply 31705/01/2021

It's over B! Put the tina pipe down!

by Anonymousreply 31805/01/2021

Tonight is the new episode

by Anonymousreply 31905/04/2021

Well we finally saw Mallory in 1995

by Anonymousreply 32005/04/2021

This episode was so fucking good!!!

by Anonymousreply 32105/04/2021

This really was a good one.

by Anonymousreply 32205/04/2021

The fashion isn’t very early to mid nineties looking. Blunt cuts weren’t popular back then. Layered hair was all the rage. I haven’t seen one babydoll floral dress YET. No bodysuits, or wedge sandals....Doc Marten boots....yin and yang just seems off. I am not loving the awful 90’s cover songs either. One more gripe, but her use of internet, when I was a teen in the mid 90’s nobody I knew had a computer in their room. Nobody even had a laptop with internet until 1996 in my circle of friends and it wasn’t the social tool bak then that it became in the early 2000’s.

by Anonymousreply 32305/04/2021

I agree 100 percent about the fashion, r323.

I also don't think anyone used the word "safe space" back then.

by Anonymousreply 32405/05/2021

R324, right? People didn’t talk like therapists back then. The lack of 90’s teenager slang is noticeable. I heard somebody say “awe, snap!”, but I don’t recall anybody saying that until the early 2000’s. I grew up in Cali where kids said stuff like, “sick”, “stoked”, “sweet”, “awesome”, “sucks”, the kids on this show sound too 21st Century.

by Anonymousreply 32505/05/2021

Safe space isn’t a new term. They used it because that is what the therapist told them. They were using therapist words.

“Safe space” is not new. Therapists and Psychologists have always let you know you’re in a safe space.

The fashion actually is correct. That is what a lot of GAP and JCrew ads looked like in the early 90s. What r323 described was not the only thing people were wearing.

Welcome to reality where different people wore different things.

by Anonymousreply 32605/05/2021

So because you think the wardrobe is straight out of some 90s Gap/JCrew ads you saw, that invalidates 323? You have no idea what you are talking about with your random Gap/JCrew bullshit. Not everyone wore those brands. Somehow I doubt you were a teen in the 90s.

No one said "safe space" was a new word. The bartender at the gay bar (ep 3) also used that term. It wasn't a commonly used word in the 90s.

We are having a good discussion, stop being a bitch because you have nothing better to do.

by Anonymousreply 32705/05/2021

R327, that asshole is just a troll. I can’t even see their post because I blocked them for something else. Seems like they just like to grab attention.

by Anonymousreply 32805/05/2021

So, one thing that’s clear is he didn’t plan on kidnapping and confining Kate, there was that whole part about figuring into out their “roles,” and not really being prepared for her. So he’s probably not a serial abductor, but there must have been some incident she witnesses or was involved in that he panicked over. It was kind of terrifying the long term implications when she awoke and was surrounded by all those supplies.

by Anonymousreply 32905/05/2021

R327 and r328 are the same person.

Same IP address.

Psycho, take your shit to another thread.

by Anonymousreply 33005/05/2021

Are they setting up Kate to have had some kind of dissociative episode?

Mallory comes off as desperate for clinging to Kate.

I take it that the boyfriend is history?

I wonder what was behind the stepsister's sudden involvement.

by Anonymousreply 33105/05/2021

It was really jarring when the bartender referred to a "safe space". Maybe that was a therapist word, I don't know, I had thereapy in the 90s and no one used it to me. I agree the fashions don't look right. The Jamie character would be wearing much baggier, looser fitting t shirts, as that's what most boys wore - if you were a medium, you wore a large or extra large -- what about bowl cuts, as well? I also thought the computer was surprising, and the cell phones -- I don't know who used them, then, average kids didn't have them, though. When the kids used them in the movie Clueless it indicated "Beverly Hills Rich kid" .

by Anonymousreply 33205/05/2021

R332 not in suburban TX. You’re thinking of urban areas or suburban towns in places like LA.

The way they’re dressing is perfect for TX. Guys wore a lot of NON baggy jeans, a lot of boots, and a lot of flannel or plain tees.

That shit you see in Clueless was not as prominent in a lot of TX.

by Anonymousreply 33305/05/2021

Baggy jeans was never “in” the way you would think in most of the south or Midwest.

by Anonymousreply 33405/05/2021

R332 The term existed in the 90s. But, yeah, it meant someplace like a therapist's office, or group therapy where one was safe to say anything.

by Anonymousreply 33505/05/2021

Yes. “Safe space” is not a new term. It’s just that now it’s used in everyday lingo. In the past it was specifically meant for a space where you can say anything with no judgments etc

by Anonymousreply 33605/05/2021

“The term safe space refers to places created for individuals who feel marginalized to come together to communicate regarding their experiences with marginalization, most commonly located on university campuses in the western world, but also at workplaces”

“The terms safe space (or safe-space), safer space, and positive space may also indicate that a teacher, educational institution or student body does not tolerate violence, harassment, or hate speech, thereby creating a safe place for marginalized people.“

by Anonymousreply 33705/05/2021

This article references a book that places its origins in gay and lesbian bars in the mid 1960s.

Literally nothing is unique to this generation.

by Anonymousreply 33905/05/2021

Both Mallory and Jeanette have the most annoying voices ever. Nasal

by Anonymousreply 34005/05/2021

Yes. Safe spaces were literal spaces created for people who were marginalized aka LGBT people or people of color, where they could go and be able to be themselves while safe.

That is how the term was born.

by Anonymousreply 34105/05/2021

I guess we know now who wouldn't dance with Kate to Zombie.

by Anonymousreply 34205/05/2021

I like that Mallory and Kate became friends after Mallory saw Jeanette was actually an awful bitch (if she was, who knows)

by Anonymousreply 34305/05/2021

Kate's mother is social climbing trash. Old whore is terrified of having to shop for generic.

by Anonymousreply 34405/05/2021

I’ve met women just like Kate’s mom. She rings true to me.

by Anonymousreply 34505/05/2021

The Kate focused episodes are sooooooooooo much better than the Jeanette ones.

Looks like next week we get both.

by Anonymousreply 34605/05/2021

Safe space may not be a new term, but it definitely felt like 2020s speak coming from a therapist in the mid-90s. Same with Kate's sister talking about how she and her dad didn't have the same privilege as Kate and her mom. No one talked about privilege in that way in the '90s.

by Anonymousreply 34705/05/2021

R347 yes. Many did. Being “woke” isn’t new.

by Anonymousreply 34805/05/2021

Kate having linoleum flooring in her bathroom rings untrue. The old whore mother should be ashamed. I hope she is DP'd by her husband and the gardener while sucking Froy's dick. You know she's up for it.

by Anonymousreply 34905/05/2021

So what is the actress Olivia Holt hinting at? Are Jamie and the VP accomplices?

by Anonymousreply 35005/05/2021

I hope the mother catches the karma she deserves.

by Anonymousreply 35105/05/2021

Okay, well I can't wait for Kate and her friends to also start talking about how black lives matter. Because even though it was only popularized as a saying recently, I'm sure someone at some point earlier in time also said it and t will feel totally organic coming out of people's mouths in 1993.

by Anonymousreply 35205/05/2021

R352 that term was popularized right now. But there have been black activists for decades upon decades.

Grow up and educate yourself.

by Anonymousreply 35305/05/2021

I was a teenager in the 90s and some aspects of this show ring true, others don't. At least one of the teenage boys would have a butt cut (longish hair parted in the middle). And there's not nearly enough plaid.

by Anonymousreply 35405/05/2021

You are probably describing the curtains haircut. ^^

by Anonymousreply 35505/05/2021

R354 so far every time there is plaid they wear it around their waste. Wearing your shirt around your waste was common then. You never see that now for some reason

by Anonymousreply 35605/05/2021

The step sister is out for revenge. That or she wants brownie points from Jeanette's brother.

by Anonymousreply 35705/05/2021

R333 I was only talking about the cell phones, and I only used Clueless as a reference. In the movie, rich kids were using those big cell phones with antennas. People laughed when they saw it in the movie because it was a "Beverly Hills" reference -- "those spolied rich kids using cell phones like it's no big deal". I knew no one who regularly used a cell phone back then.

People are missing the point about "safe space" -- it wasn't a word in regular use in the mid-90s. Maybe if the therapist referred to it and the other character said "What do you mean by that?" it would have seemed more true. And the bartender using it just seemed anachronistic.

[quote]The way they’re dressing is perfect for TX. Guys wore a lot of NON baggy jeans, a lot of boots, and a lot of flannel or plain tees.

Who's wearing boots?

by Anonymousreply 35805/05/2021

Safe space is the new Norwegian Catholics.

by Anonymousreply 35905/05/2021

When Harley Quinn brought up shopping at The Limited, I found it strange. Nobody I knew was shopping there. That store was targeted at women from ages 20-40 something. We used to go to Contempo Casuals, Gadzooks, Merry-go-Round, Anchor Blue/Miller’s Outpost, thrift stores, Mervyn’s.....those are the places that come to mind. I used to love looking through my friend’s Delila’s catalog. Memories......

by Anonymousreply 36005/05/2021

R360 um they were buying all black attire because they were in their goth stage. That’s a great place to shop for that

by Anonymousreply 36105/05/2021

That one white cowboy guy who is married to the black woman is stupid, too. Have these assholes ever been to a wealthy Texas suburb? He would not be married to a black lady. Maybe a hot Latina like Sofia Vergara, or even a passive Asian type of woman, but NO way in Hell his wife would be black. Again they are trying to be to inclusive instead of keeping shit real.

by Anonymousreply 36205/05/2021

Because interracial marriage didn’t exist then? As a product of interracial marriage, I can confirm it did.

by Anonymousreply 36305/05/2021

R354 This was the hairstyle they originally planned for Jamie, I'm surprised they moved away from it!

by Anonymousreply 36405/05/2021

R364 thank God they did.

by Anonymousreply 36505/05/2021

R364 that is what I remember every hot white boy looking like in the 90s! It is unfortunate that they didn’t go with it.

by Anonymousreply 36605/05/2021

Wow, Kate's mother is awful.

by Anonymousreply 36705/05/2021

On that topic, does she give anyone else Patsy Ramsey vibes?

by Anonymousreply 36805/05/2021

R362 I thought the same thing. Hank in his cowboy hat acting Republican as fuck, would not be married to a black woman. If he were, she would be mixed race and look like Meghan Markle. This is supposed to be almost thirty years ago. Some of the stuff going on is too contemporary.

by Anonymousreply 36905/05/2021

The mother arranged for the VP to kidnap her daughter and keep her away so she could decorate the dining room in peace. It all becomes clear.

by Anonymousreply 37005/05/2021

Goth clothes at the Limited? No. No. No.

Mallory was being sarcastic. She wouldn't be caught dead at the Limited.

by Anonymousreply 37105/05/2021

How the fuck did an assistant principal afford that home that looks like it costs a million or better?? Is he trafficking teen girls for sex?

by Anonymousreply 37205/05/2021

[quote]that is what I remember every hot white boy looking like in the 90s

Errr no. Maybe every white trash redneck from hickville but not every hot young white guy from the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 37305/05/2021

I didn't watch the trailer but the title is throwing me off. When I hear"Cruel Summer, I think of Bananarama and the 1980s! If this show is set in the 90s, couldn't the have thought of a title that's more reminiscent of that decade? "Teen Spirit", "The New Kids", "The Gen X Chronicles" or something? "

by Anonymousreply 37405/05/2021

The way they are utilizing the internet isn’t really indicative of the time. The show probably should have been set between 1997 to 1999.

by Anonymousreply 37505/05/2021

I mean, Kate appears to be on text-based BBS of some kind. I was doing that in 1993.

by Anonymousreply 37605/05/2021

Is Jeanette considered chubby?

by Anonymousreply 37705/05/2021

R376 I know itwashppening, but I only meant that there were just not many people using the internet back then to communicate. She has a fucking computer in her bedroom in the 1994 flashbacks. It just doesn’t seem like a very early 90’s way of life. I was 15 in 1994 and I didn’t know anybody who had a computer in their bedroom, and certainly no to chat until around 96/97.

by Anonymousreply 37805/05/2021

R378 she probably asked for one.

You may have not known anyone with one in their bedroom, but some did.

by Anonymousreply 37905/05/2021

“Mallory” Kevin Smith’s daughter is another case of daddy buying a career. She isn’t at all attractive and her acting is just meh. If her daddy wasn’t famous she would never stand a chance of getting cast in anything.

by Anonymousreply 38005/05/2021

She’s perfectly cast as Mallory.

by Anonymousreply 38105/05/2021

This is the first episode where I liked Mallory. She held her own.

We're going to see a reference to one of her dad's movies at some point, aren't we?

by Anonymousreply 38205/05/2021

[R378] computers in bedrooms have been popularized right now. But there have been computers in bedrooms for decades upon decades.

Grow up and educate yourself.

by Anonymousreply 38305/05/2021

I had a PC in my bedroom as a teenager by 1997. A teen-aged friend of mine had one in his room in 1995/1996. Internet sucked until 2001/2002 or so when cable internet became more accessible, but we already had the PCs. LOL

by Anonymousreply 38405/05/2021

R383, computers in bedrooms and using them to chat has not been a thing for “decades upon decades”. Just look at most television shows and films from that time period and you will see that it was not all that common. You sound imperious as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 38505/05/2021

Chat rooms did exist in 1993

by Anonymousreply 38605/05/2021

Early 90s saw the rise of the "heroin chic" look. Jeanette would have been considered chubby.

by Anonymousreply 38705/05/2021

Yes. In 2021 Jeanette is thin or normal. In 1993 she was “chubby”

by Anonymousreply 38805/05/2021

In 2021 Jeanette is considered obese.

by Anonymousreply 38905/05/2021

This is the commercial I remember about internet in the 90s. It was not made to sound at all exciting to teens. I didn’t have a pc until the late 90s, I was middle class. The characters on the show don’t have computers except for the rich girls. This would be the case I think for most people at that time. Everybody I knew who bought pcs and internet in the 90s had them set up in the den, or some shared space. I didn’t know anybody who as using them to chat regularly until the early 2000s. As commented above, the internet was crap back then and it would crash frequently.

Good episode. Love this INXS song and hadn't heard it in so long! I grew up in the 90's. I had my first computer in 1996 and turned into an AOL addict tying up the phone lines.. oh the memories.. my friend and I met some guy online and asked him to meet at a bagel shop. As soon as we actually saw him there, we ran out the door.

Also, liked Mallory a lot in this one.

by Anonymousreply 39205/05/2021

It has parallels of My So-Called Life. The rebellious best friend and the minority gay guy hanging out with a goodie two shoes.

by Anonymousreply 39305/05/2021

Ummmm nothing alike

by Anonymousreply 39405/05/2021

Harley Quinn is comparable with and has many parallels to nepotistic Billie Lourde and she’s doing a head and shoulders better job so far above anything I’ve seen of Billie. Then again Billie might be in the same Murphy trap that Evan Peters is in, and if you been watching Mare of Easttown he’s been a revelation in the role he’s playing. It’s possible there may still be a chance for Billie.

by Anonymousreply 39505/05/2021

R347 The original title was Last Summer.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 39905/05/2021

They were smart to realize Last Summer is an awful title (and one already used recently) and switched it to Cruel Summer

by Anonymousreply 40005/05/2021

Last Summer has more meaning related to the show, though. It's about various summers, and it may refer to someone dying and it being their last summer.

by Anonymousreply 40105/05/2021

R387 Harley Quinn is bigger! She looks like a moose.

by Anonymousreply 40205/05/2021

Excuse ME?! Some high schoolers were blowing their allowances on Cardigans there.

by Anonymousreply 40305/05/2021

What about the accents on the show? People I've known from Dallas have had accents, but not everyone. Froy Gutierrez is from Dallas but has no accent and I know other kids from the area who don't have Texas accents. Is it a thing of the past?

by Anonymousreply 40405/05/2021

The show is actually good. I liked it more than I thought I would. The Jennette actress is very good.

by Anonymousreply 40505/06/2021

R364 I guess that is why Froy said he couldn't cut his hair when people commented how long it was getting. Then I got confused because he cut his hair yet wasn't done filming. I guess they decided against long-haired Jamie.

by Anonymousreply 40605/06/2021

Different parts of TX have different accents. And some have none.

It also depends on whether the person and family is FROM TX (like McBongo whose family is from there for generations) or transplants to TX.

TX is one of the states where a lot of people are moving to. So people will say they’re from there but moved there from California. Not the same.

by Anonymousreply 40705/06/2021

R344 She's 45. That's old only on DL

by Anonymousreply 40805/06/2021

r408. On DL that's basically someone you find mummified in an Egyptian tomb.

by Anonymousreply 40905/06/2021

Where the flannel? If these were the early 90s everything would be wrapped in flannel. Grungers, alternative kids, skaters wore flannel, gangsta rappers wore flannel, old farts that wanted to be down with kids wore flannel (Aerosmith), cute preppy girls wore flannel (girls in Aerosmith videos). Where's all the flannel?

by Anonymousreply 41005/06/2021

There has been flannel wrapped around the waists a few times.

by Anonymousreply 41105/06/2021

It’s summer in Texas.

by Anonymousreply 41205/06/2021

So? They don't wear shorts and t shirts all the time.

by Anonymousreply 41305/06/2021

Flannel in Texas summer? Please.

by Anonymousreply 41405/06/2021

So far, I don't think anyone actually wore flannel, just used as an accessory around the waist.

by Anonymousreply 41505/06/2021

R415 because it’s set in June/July/August in TX. If you’ve ever been in TX during those months you know what it’s like.

It goes into the 100s and it’s humid as fuck.

No one is gonna be wearing flannel.

by Anonymousreply 41605/06/2021

I do hope there’s a real heatwave day along the way, where they are all hot and steamy and barely wearing anything or spending the day at the pool or better yet the local watering hole.

by Anonymousreply 41705/06/2021

Flannel in summer is not popular now but it was worn for decades upon decades.

Grow up and educate yourself.

by Anonymousreply 41805/06/2021

R418 well done.

by Anonymousreply 41905/06/2021

R418 only by legit cowboys. Otherwise they wore tshirts.

by Anonymousreply 42005/06/2021

I really, really like this little show!! Haven’t been this excited about a new show since Cobra Kai started several years ago.

I do prefer it when the focus is on Kate, I find the actress and the character more compelling.

Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m gonna go grow up and educate myself.

by Anonymousreply 42105/06/2021

I like the concept of the show, as this Gone Girl sort of tale. The clothing styles and use of internet does seem a bit off, though. Computers were already in use, but young people were not really using them to communicate at that time, even though crude chat rooms did exist. They used to have suicide and sexual assault phone lines for people in crisis back then. The hair and clothing feels to contemporary. Flannel everything, babydoll dresses, ripped jeans, goody barrettes, chokers, floral print, vans shoes, combat boots, those bodysuits that snapped at the crotch, THAT is what I remember people wearing in the 90’s.

by Anonymousreply 42205/06/2021

by Anonymousreply 42305/06/2021

[quote] I didn’t know anybody who had a computer in their bedroom

by Anonymousreply 42605/06/2021

In a weird way, the show reminds me a lot of a Scandinavian crime drama. It's partially the subject matter, but a bigger part is the differing color palettes for the different years. That was a really smart choice.

by Anonymousreply 42705/06/2021

by Anonymousreply 42805/06/2021

In Ep 4 we finally get good looks at Froy's nose. In the car with original GF.

We see it in profile and a rear shot. Froy has a "big" Roman nose. It's very nice. In all his fashion pics and social media "selfies" he is photographed strait on and it disappears. You'd never know its there. I don't think he likes it. If he likes his profile, why doesn't he ever show it? I think he looks fine in profile and more masculine. And I like his nose!

by Anonymousreply 44205/06/2021

I'm not complaining about his nose, which I like. Yes, he has an aquiline nose and clearly he does not feature it in still photos. Some would say aquiline but it's a modest one not florid. Its more "Roman" because of the bump. It's masculine and I think he should feature it more.

by Anonymousreply 44505/06/2021

R445 I just don't get what this is about. Froy's been on other shows. Most people who know him know what his nose looks like. He's not exactly camera shy, people call him the selfie king. Maybe do an image search? Not many people take selfies from the side, but he even does that.

From his instagram

Look on his insta, the picture of him in the show Hair, for ex., or search pictures from Teen Wolf.

The pic at R447 shows it. The pic at R446 does not. You seem to think this is a criticism of your beloved Froy.

The fact is the majority of his social media and press and fashion editorial pic, do not show is big handsome nose.

Its not a big deal. Stop trying to refute this. I'm not the only one who has noticed.

by Anonymousreply 44905/06/2021

His current photo shoot decidedly features his strong nose.

Can't you stupid fucking Froy-obsessed fat Fraus keep to your own thread and leave us the fuck alone?

by Anonymousreply 45205/06/2021

Can you high strung queens, r452, STFU?

by Anonymousreply 45305/07/2021

Possibly only 1 shot in Wonderland shows the possibility of the nose bump. Are you blind? A shot including his nose is NOT a shot showing its full glory!

R452 lick my eldergay AIDS riddled prolapse. Why do you think we watch this treacly teen series? FROY

by Anonymousreply 45505/07/2021

R427 really? Its the opposite for me. That's the worst thing about the show. It looks tacky and cheap. Especially '95 looking gloom and cloudy all the time

by Anonymousreply 45605/07/2021

I love the show. I liked Mallory a lot this past episode and I am glad she got featured more.

Kate is a much better character than Jeanette. Just like real life. Some people are more interesting, attractive, complex etc. and some people are just basic.

by Anonymousreply 45705/07/2021

Fucks sakes, none of you fat queens are kicking Froy outta your beds over his nose, so drop it already.

by Anonymousreply 45805/07/2021

Idiot, we like his big nose, and it bodes a big dick.

by Anonymousreply 45905/07/2021

Why does no one question the mother and brother being MIA in 1995?

by Anonymousreply 46005/07/2021

I assume mom split.

by Anonymousreply 46105/07/2021

In episode 3 we learn mom was always popular and pretty and beloved. She was prom Queen etc. All this hate was new for her and she clearly couldn’t handle it.

She probably ran away.

by Anonymousreply 46205/07/2021

The brother comes to visit in 1995 during episode 3.

by Anonymousreply 46305/07/2021

R449 It's that you're late to the party and think because you noticed someone on a current TV series, you discovered something. Then you selectively looked at a few selfies and decided he's hiding his nose, and that he doesn't like it. Its always been there, so I'm not sure what your point is.

Having a big dick and big nose have no correlation

by Anonymousreply 46605/07/2021

What a silly discussion, Froylan's nose has always been...err there. It's not like he can hide it. lol

Anyway, this show makes me feel anxious whenever I watch it. I need to know if Jamie is involved or the VP was just working solo.

by Anonymousreply 46705/07/2021

We will find out eventually r467

by Anonymousreply 46805/07/2021

There is nothing wrong with Froy’s nose and you bitches making a federal case about it would love it of his nose was buried in your ass.

by Anonymousreply 46905/07/2021

After this last episode, I'm thinking they are setting Kate up for a serious mental disorder.

Mallory worshiping Kate makes her look like a pathetic hanger on.

by Anonymousreply 47005/07/2021

Reading skills. We like FROY's Aztec Chief honker.

by Anonymousreply 47105/07/2021

When Kate is talking about Annabelle and it’s flashing images, is there one of a light skinned African American girl briefly interspersed? Maybe he brings a younger girl to the basement and that’s what makes her fight back and kill him? Her being comfortable around guns opens up the possibility that given the chance she might have shot him? There is bound to be a couple twists related to her discover and his death that will slowly be revealed and then flip back on themselves.

by Anonymousreply 47205/07/2021

Wait are we sure he is dead?

by Anonymousreply 47305/08/2021

I'm trying to get into this show but every week I find it's just about trying to follow the pretzel twists of the plot. They didn't bother to make many of the characters likeable or get me emotionally involved in their stories. I know, I'm the only one.

by Anonymousreply 47405/08/2021

R474 Idk if you’re the only one but you’re def the minority. People seem to be liking it and it’s one of hulus most popular shows right now

by Anonymousreply 47505/08/2021

R475 That's nice. But whether the show is popular or not isn't going to influence me one way or the other. I don't think it's bad, I just find it contrived, not resembling real life very much and like I said, what is supposed to make me care about these people? I'm sure Chiara Aurelia is a nice person but I find her "nerd" makeup and performance incredibly contrived, almost laughable, and he 1995 persona almost as bad (1994 seems more natural). I fond myself being more interested in some of the supoorting parts, like the guys played by Allius Barnes and Nathaniel Ashton (Harley Quinn Smith gives me a headache, though).

by Anonymousreply 47605/08/2021

No one is trying to influence your ass r476. No one cares.

You said “I’m the only one” so I stated some facts that you may not be the only one, but certainly are in the minority.

by Anonymousreply 47705/08/2021

R477 Why do you feel the need to tell me I'm "certainly" in the minority? Fuck you and your subtle superiority. And by the only one, I just meant on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 47805/08/2021

Girls, girls—you;re both caught up in a pointless internet flame war.

by Anonymousreply 47905/08/2021

Kate is so much more interesting and the actress is better.

New episode about to start! This is the one show I look forward to every week now

by Anonymousreply 485Last Tuesday at 5:52 PM

This has been a great episode so far. This show is a lot better than I thought it would be

by Anonymousreply 486Last Tuesday at 6:38 PM

I can't get into this show at all for some reason. I'm watching it so a friend and I can talk about it. The kidnapping/grooming angle gives me the creeps without being intriguing.

by Anonymousreply 487Last Tuesday at 6:42 PM

I think it’s the most interesting thing on tv right now

by Anonymousreply 488Last Tuesday at 6:53 PM

Maybe, I don't watch a lot of series TV.

by Anonymousreply 489Last Tuesday at 6:58 PM

Wow. This was a great episode! This show keeps getting better with each episode.

The scene where Jamie confesses he lied to Kate was very well done.

by Anonymousreply 490Last Tuesday at 7:07 PM

The scene where Jamie confesses that he lied to Kate was very well done.

Froylan’s acting is all chin.

by Anonymousreply 493Last Wednesday at 1:13 AM

Froyo using his mouth and jaw a lot to “act”. But he’s effective all the same

by Anonymousreply 494Last Wednesday at 1:15 AM

Yes, he makes a convincing sensitive dudebro.

by Anonymousreply 495Last Wednesday at 1:22 AM

I liked the scene where he apologizes for lying to Kate. It was a well done scene.

by Anonymousreply 496Last Wednesday at 1:24 AM

Jeanette’s mother clearly can’t handle all that’s happening. It’s sad seeing her get drunk early in the day because someone spit on her car. She’s so used to being loved and admired.

I think next week we see when she leaves.

by Anonymousreply 497Last Wednesday at 6:36 AM

I see on the jobless trolls thread someone (him) claiming there are only 2 episodes left.

There are 5 left. It’s a 10 episode season. We have seen 5. That means 5 more.

Learn math jobless psycho b

by Anonymousreply 498Last Wednesday at 6:44 AM

The show is set up so every season would be a new story. If there is a season 2 I doubt it will be the same cast. It will be like The Sinner

by Anonymousreply 499Last Wednesday at 6:46 AM

A lot of teen shows are dark but have something celebrating life or that it's good to be alive, or in loive, or whatever, at least sometimes. This show just is dark and no one is happy at all, and it weirds me out.

by Anonymousreply 500Last Wednesday at 9:30 AM

*in love

by Anonymousreply 501Last Wednesday at 9:30 AM

R500 glad it isn’t schlock then

by Anonymousreply 502Last Wednesday at 10:40 AM

It’s true. Even the likable characters probably have ulterior motives. The bartender/girlfriend is probably a reporter or an investigator for Kate’s lawyers.

by Anonymousreply 503Last Wednesday at 10:45 AM

This show is so interesting

by Anonymousreply 504Last Wednesday at 10:49 AM

It's an evil show and I'm reporting it to one million moms.

by Anonymousreply 505Last Wednesday at 10:56 AM

R505 Will you let them know that you like to take cock up your ass?

by Anonymousreply 506Last Wednesday at 11:05 AM

About to watch it again.

by Anonymousreply 507Last Wednesday at 1:56 PM

I don't buy Jeanette's mom as a '90s mom. She seems more like a mom of a teen now. '90s moms were more.. matronly.

by Anonymousreply 508Last Thursday at 1:36 AM

Every single mother in the 90s was matronly? I know mine wasn’t

by Anonymousreply 509Last Thursday at 2:38 AM

R509, you have a point. Matronly wasn't the right word. She just reads as more like a mom from today, from my experience -- sorry, I can't explain it better than that!

by Anonymousreply 510Last Thursday at 10:36 AM

She doesn’t feel modern at all. She’s a former popular girl who was always adored.

by Anonymousreply 511Last Thursday at 10:38 AM

I miss this thread. Hate that it is paywalled
