The acting in the trailer did not impress me, though that is hardly unusual for a teen drama.

I've never seen this before, but all the acting of Froy comes right from his chin! It's like all you can see when he's on the screen.

It's interesting they went with Garbage's Stupid Girl when the most obvious choice for a track (even when it's from the 80s) is right there in the title.

PS I enjoyed the first half of episode 1 greatly and then the end, but somewhere in the middle the pacing went off.

I had to force myself through episode 1, but 2 was better. I find in a lot of these shows the parents are the better actors and make it more interesting when they get some screen time. Like the mother of Hanna Baker in 13 Reasons Why.

What is a wealthy/middle class suburban Texas town like r108? I’ve been to TX many times and each part feels very different from the next. Not to mention each town within a city.

Most shows or movies don’t get the atmosphere etc. right in shows set in the past. This is why I love Once Upon a Time in Hollywood so much. Tarantino really brought 1969 LA back to life. It felt and looked just like it. It’s incredible.

But also, this is why you should cast a young man from TX to play a Texan. Not some city boy from LA.

Overall, I enjoyed the premiere although I sometimes had trouble keeping track of which timeline things were taking place in. I also felt like the main two girls were both generically pretty and sometimes slightly hard to keep straight. Though I'm sure that'll lesson as we get to know them better.

Regarding Jeanette seeing Kate at the VP's house, I'm guessing the mirrored basement hat Jeanette lingered in is actually two way mirrors concealing a secret room. Jeanette probably went down there while Kate was being held and Kate (not knowing the glass was two way mirrors) assumed she saw her when Jeanette really only saw her own reflection.

R148 But, it looks like she gave Kate her necklace at some point, or is there the possibility she lost it? There us also the possibility that Jeanette was also being abducted by the principal, but got away.

1994 - Jeanette now is more slim with no glasses and keeps her hair straight and it’s long. Kate has brown roots that show a lot. Froyo is now with Jeanette.

The show was originally called Last Summer and was only changed to Cruel Summer closer to the air date. Maybe that's why the soundtrack doesn't contain songs with "cruel summer" in the title.

There were things about the clothes I didn't understand. People were talking about it in another forum. Like, tucking in the t shirt to the boxer shorts (Froy - "Jamie"). That never happened. Also, they had him lifting weights in jeans and a belt. (???) In general his grynge look was way too neat and tidy looking. I have no idea what some of the clothjes were on Allius Barnes and Harley Quinn Smith, who played Jeannette's nerdy friends. I never saw those in the 90s.

Episode 3 felt a little lacking compared to the first 2 episodes. Certain timeline things didn't make sense to me either. But didn't we already see in June of 1995 that she told her story in that TV interview where she claimed Jeanette saw her and didn't help?

But it's a much cheaper-looking show - it seems like a much lower budget. 13 Reasons Why had a beautiful location (San Francisco area) and had amazing photography. This is a lot closer to The Sinner or Secrets & Lies than 13 Reasons Why.

The show has similarities to 13 Reasons Why because it cuts back and forth between time periods by using things like haircuts and other physical traits to let the audience know what time frame they are in. Jeanette even seems to be wearing the same ugly wig Hannah wore in 13RW. It reminds me very much of 13RW in that way. Also it has the Rashomon-like premise of people telling different versions of the same story, that is common to both shows. And of course it's about teens and parents. There may be other similarities, I don't know.

I like the concept of the show, as this Gone Girl sort of tale. The clothing styles and use of internet does seem a bit off, though. Computers were already in use, but young people were not really using them to communicate at that time, even though crude chat rooms did exist. They used to have suicide and sexual assault phone lines for people in crisis back then. The hair and clothing feels to contemporary. Flannel everything, babydoll dresses, ripped jeans, goody barrettes, chokers, floral print, vans shoes, combat boots, those bodysuits that snapped at the crotch, THAT is what I remember people wearing in the 90’s.

It was a good episode, very good! I haven't been a big fan so far. I enjoyed the episode, maybe because it had more emotional depth. I don't know all the actors' names, but in this ep. the mother and Martin Harris (Blake Lee) were good. The mother plays it "big" but she seems real, She really connects. Blake Lee just is very natural and believable. He has great eyes. I'm not really liking Harley Q. Smith -- she overacts, trying too hard to sound/act like a teen. I don't know about Froy, he seems to be acting in a little movie all his own. I really can't see any relationship between him and Olivia Holt, they seem to be from different planets. She's about 10x better than him. His drunk act was not good.

Watch Kate’s reaction when Jamie gives her the birthday present in front of their friends. Then watch when they are headed back home and Jamie is drunk. She is already starting to see that he’s nothing more than nice arm candy. She doesn’t see him as someone she can rely on now and she’s doubting there is a future with him.

When Mr. Harris saves the day, you can see the switch go off in Kate’s head and why she does what she does after she has the altercation with her mother.
