Murray's pulled out of Miami.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 23, 2021 3:13 PM |
R9, my Andy pulled out of me, I mean Miami, because he's one of the Big Four. The other three aren't playing, so my Andy had to drop out too as it wouldn't befit a legendary champion of his status to play a tournament against players of lower stature.
P.S. My Andy is the biggest of the Big Four, if you catch my drift.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 23, 2021 3:27 PM |
Wow. I remember when they used to call Miami 'the Fifth Major'. Now nobody bothers to show up.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 23, 2021 3:43 PM |
Miami was like the fifth major only for the women. Many of the top men often skipped Miami. JFC their honor roll shows Tim Mayotte (who?) as the first Miami champion. The fact that Rafa's never won it shows how seriously he takes the tournament.
Wimbledon >>>>>>>> US Open >>>>>>>> Roland Garros >>>>>>>>> Oz Open >>> ATP Masters >>>>>>>>>>> Miami

shame about Murray
R12 Miami is a huge tournament and always has been. A lot of the Spanish speaking players love coming to Miami too. It's a big hole in Nadal's resume second only to his lack of titles at the World Tour Finals

A couple of the players have made references to 'something going down' at Miami. Were they talking about the extra lockdown being implemented or some kind of player announcement?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 24, 2021 6:19 AM |
Does Venus seem a bit, well, not fat, but heavier than she used to be? I am so used to her very lean look and she seems a bit thicker to me. This latest loss is a crushing blow. I think she should skip the clay events and focus on winning Wimbledon or the USA Open where she has much better chances. No point tiring herself out trying to play on the slow dirt only to lose to some boring baseliner who will plant herself ten feet behind the baseline and hit topspin loppers all day.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 24, 2021 8:45 AM |
R21 I mean this in the nicest way as I like her a lot, but Venus has no chance in hell of winning Wimbledon or the US Open again.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 24, 2021 8:48 AM |
R22, the US Open might be more of a challenge because players like Osaka are great on hardcourts, but if a human backboard like Simona Help can win Wimbledon, a natural grasscourter like Venus has an equally good chance. Serena would be her biggest threat. Players like Kvitov or Mugu or Pliskov are too flashy and will lose early. Osaka is shit on grass and Barty will lose in the first round again.
Venus knows how to play on grass. The others apart from Serena don't.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 24, 2021 8:55 AM |
Venus looks out of shape and she'd old. She's losing routinely in first rounds now. It's a shame. I can't understand why she doesn't hang it up unless it's sponsorship $$.

ANYONE ELSE sick of prakash amritraj!... comes across as both "smarmy" and "stupid" which is quite the combination... NEVER MIND more importantly, utter UTTER nepotism due to his last name! he's another patrick mcenroe, a below average player but because of his last name now he is a PAID tennis commentator, correspondent who gets to travel the world and comment on matches? because his qualifications are? journalism/broadcasting degree? years of working his way up the ladder? great long knowledge of the sport's history? nope, nope and nope!.. the guy was a failure as a player with a grand total of 53 matches as a pro, losing 33! and only playing a couple of years, highest ranking in the mid 150's... but hey, he's a former pro, so let's hire him TENNIS CHANNEL!...

Popyrin has really upped his level this season and it's nice to see some younger guys start doing that. He gave Medvedev a very good match today and came up just short

Andreescu def. Anisimova in 3 long sets but seems to be injured again lol. It won't surprise me if she pulls out of her match against Muguruza tomorrow but I hope she can play. That would be a fun match

Methinks Margaret Court at R128 doth protest too much. Everyone knows that the Wimbledon roll of honor changed the heading from Ladies Singles to Lezzies Singles in the Alice Marble era and it has remained that way since with the 0.2% of straight players like Miss Pencil Evert identified via asterisks. It will come as no surprise to anyone if it was revealed that Margaret is in a throuple with Wendy Turnbull and Spam Shriver.

Please, Shapo made those comments while at a Russian tournament, his parents are Russian emigrants, he likely has some family still in Russia, the Russian tennis organization was likely trying to get him to play under the Russian flag, and Putin poisons people on the regular. I would have said the same things as Shapo did in his position to stay in everyone's good graces. Flatter your host.

why is it when Shapovalov yells after losing points on court, his scream sounds like he's still going through puberty? It doesn't sound like a fully formed man's voice. Very odd
by Anonymous | reply 143 | March 29, 2021 7:16 PM |
Uh, no, R139--it's the same as Isner and DJT. There's a difference between accommodating hostile political reality to the least extent possible, and embracing it with "my dream is to meet Vladimir Putin".
by Anonymous | reply 144 | March 29, 2021 7:26 PM |
Marton must be really really tired of finding Rublev everytime, the only young top player who is regular and gives his all in every match.
Musetti needs a lot to develop a game on hard courts, from the very young guns he is the most clay courter of all by far
by Anonymous | reply 145 | March 29, 2021 8:12 PM |
R145 In their last match in Dubai, at the end Fucsovics joked to Rublev that he hoped it was the last time he saw him for a while lol
Fucsovics has been in his best form this year but has been unlucky to keep running into Rublev. He will likely win at least 1 title this year if he keeps his form up. Rublev won't be at every tournament he plays
by Anonymous | reply 146 | March 29, 2021 8:18 PM |
R144 pretty much everyone on tour says Isner is very nice guy, and treats everyone with respect.
Your political obsession is tiresome.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | March 29, 2021 8:58 PM |
That's nice, R147. Call it obsession if that floats your boat. I just happen to believe that people's politics and support of despots does to a great extent reflect their level of "niceness". And if you've ever read Isner's tweets, you'd see that he's not all that nice. However, it's not my intent to derail this thread into a political discussion, so I'll just leave it at that.
Great win by Seb K, looking good in straight sets over Karatsev 6-3, 6-0!

by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 30, 2021 6:42 AM |
R158, I find her a bit too earnest and too nice to be true. I think that deep down all players, male or female, are bitches who want to win at any cost and would slit an opponent's throat if they had to do it in order to win a major title. I prefer the players who are open about their desire to win instead of pretending that they just want to be BFFs with everyone on the tour.
My favorite player is Granny Vee who comes in, plays her match and gets out, without any of the BS drama about how her opponent is her best friend. I find Naomi's nice girl act completely fake.

I've always liked Roddick. He's definitely one of the more intelligent players and doesn't take himself too seriously. He had a very impressive career considering the era he played in and who he was up against. I think a lot of people expect him to be some brash arsehole cos he was always compared to the more 'genteel' players of his day but he actually seems like a nice bloke.

R193 There's nothing better than a lavender relationship.
I find surprising that even now male players are pressured to have a girlfriend as soon as possible. I remember a journalist questioned about girlfriend to junior players (Alcaraz and Gimeno Valero) and some fans had a bad reaction when Musetti said he was too busy to have a girlfriend (but to be honest some fans seem to not like when young players are totally focused in the game, which is weird)

Totally agree. Roddick was an entitled, arrogant douchebag when he was playing and a complete cunt. Let's not whitewash his past behavior just because he seems to have now come to terms with the cold hard truth about his true standing in the game. He lucked out by somehow winning his USO before Fed and Nadal started to dominate, otherwise he would be another journeyman like Pat McEnroe getting commentary gigs without any actual tennis accomplishments to back them up.

by Anonymous | reply 236 | April 1, 2021 10:07 PM |
Tsitsipas has a very up and down season in terms of mental toughness this first quarter of the season. He survived choking moments during his AO match against Kokkinakis and came back from a losing position against Nadal.
In his last 2 tournaments though, he completely fell apart after starting off in great form. He was absolutely owning Zverev in the Acapulco final for the first 5 games and had a chance at a double break then, ended up losing in straight sets. Today he was up a set, a break and a chance for a double break before things fell apart.
Maybe changing over to clay will give him a chance to reset mentally.
Rublev has to be the clear favorite now
by Anonymous | reply 237 | April 1, 2021 10:11 PM |
Why does Med have such a problem with RBA? Because RBA is so fast?
by Anonymous | reply 238 | April 1, 2021 10:16 PM |
R238 Medvedev seems to have more trouble against the very fast, consistent counter punchers than he does power players and shotmakers. He owns Tsitsipas and Rublev but struggles against RBA, Nadal and while he's beaten Djokovic, lost in a big way at the AO to him.
Medvedev himself is capable of hitting the ball hard but most of the time he chooses not to. He has almost a Murray style of play (minus the good net play). When he's the one forced to go for winners, he's not comfortable.
