More Australian Gossip

I've been binge watching several Australian TV shows like All Saints, Packed to the Rafters, The Heart Guy and now Underbelly, which I love. So naturally I've been curious about some of the stars I've seen on TV and movies from Australia.

Would someone from down under be able to answer my questions?

Is Martin Lymes from All Saints still in jail for sexual assault?

What is Georgie Parker doing these days? I loved her as Terry Sullivan; I watched All Saints up until her character was written out. I hated the reboot as an emergency room drama.

I remember a really cute actor named Damien Rice, who played one of the first gay characters on Australian TV

They have such good quality shows so far. Why do so many of the actors come to the US? It must be ultra competitive down there.

by Anonymousreply 404November 25, 2023 4:53 PM

Georgie's on Home and Away. Has been for a few years now.

by Anonymousreply 1February 3, 2021 9:14 AM

Any info on Dominic Allburn from the soaps Between Two Worlds and A Place to Call Home? He was the only reason I watched those shows... Pure sex on legs.

by Anonymousreply 2February 3, 2021 10:07 AM

R1 Damien has disappeared into pudgy middle-age.

by Anonymousreply 3February 3, 2021 10:16 AM

OP, one of the reasons so many Aussies go to the US is a series regular gig can pay around 10 times as much as at home...a couple of years on a US show and they’ve funded a few decades of what is sure to be near-constant unemployment, if and when they return home.

Aussie TV used to produce good shows back in the 80s and 90s, when there were government incentives for home-grown content...nowadays, the rules have changed and there is slim pickings between Neighbours, Home and Away and the (very) occasional cable success like Wentworth or A Place to Call Home

by Anonymousreply 4February 3, 2021 10:32 AM

Oh no r3...

Oh well, at least he and I have something in common 😆

by Anonymousreply 5February 3, 2021 10:53 AM

Yes r4, I have heard that most of the tv programming was sponsored by the government.

They, along with kiwi actors and UK actors, have pretty much invaded Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 6February 3, 2021 10:55 AM

Martin Lynes is still in jail for raping a woman in her house. Or she was a real estate agent trying to sell a house to him. Don’t know what AUS sexual assault laws are like but I think that he has to be registered as a sex offender.

Hugh Sheridan has come out, but with the qualifier “I’m still attracted to women”. Whatever. Those flames can be seen from space.

Luke Pegler allegedly has quit acting to become a chef. Forty and still unmarried. Still cute as hell but balding.

There’s s really beautiful men in UNDERBELLY...didn’t even know how many hot actors there are down under.

One of them being Firass. But he came off as such a dick during SAS.

by Anonymousreply 8February 6, 2021 4:43 AM

Forays has extremely beautiful eyes...like jewels. Too bad he’s a douche.

Saw an interview with Ryan Johnson on YouTube. I know that he is married and has a kid, but man, does he ping. I love him in DOCTOR, DOCTOR. Rodger Corser is kind of hot, but the booty is lacking. And the redhead actor who plays Corser’s son on the show suffers from two-face. But I love his hair.

by Anonymousreply 9February 8, 2021 2:40 PM

I had an Australian actress friend who did not try her luck overseas and did stints on All Saints, Blue Heelers, Neighbours and Home and Away. She is now in her 40s so past the babe stage and has another job as a psychologist but does the occasional TV guest shot.

While you're on old Aussie shows, OP, give Police Rescue a look.

A lot of strapping young Aussie blokes and a couple of feisty women carrying out daring rescues, many of them based on real events; some really good scripts (9-11 is a shameless ripoff IMO); and the bonus of young guest stars who have since become well known internationally - Ben Mendelsson and Miranda Otto spring to mind but there are heaps of others.

by Anonymousreply 16February 11, 2021 12:50 PM

Let’s claim Jay Ryan. He’s a hunkie.

by Anonymousreply 17February 11, 2021 1:00 PM

I will see if Police Rescue is on Roku; they seem to have many Aussie TV shows and miniseries. I found [italic]Bloom[/italic] very entertaining, especially when Ryan Corr runs naked down the street.

Ben Tari, what's the deal with him? He doesn't show up anymore; I liked him in [italic]All Saints[/italic]. One of his co-stars, Jeremy Cumpston, quit acting to become a plastic surgeon, of all things. Erik Thomsen was really cute on that show, but by the time he got to PTTR, he lost his cuteness.

I'm crazy about [italic]Underbelly[/italic]. But I found out that it's on YouTube as well. So is [italic]Packed to the Rafters[/italic].

And Matt Nable is a fox. I loved him in [italic]Outlaws[/italic] as the closeted biker. What do we know about him? Is he part aborigine? Does he have any projects to be on the lookout for?

I watched the series Mystery Road with Judy Davis and Aaron Pederson. He's hot but no acting match for her.

I assume she is well respected by her peers, but she strikes me as rather prickly, like an Aussie Glenda Jackson. Is she well-liked by peers (I think she's good friends with Geoffrey Rush)? Not sure if she's friendly with Cate Blanchett.

by Anonymousreply 28March 2, 2021 1:41 PM

American here -- I watch a number of Australian shows like A Place to Call Home (loved it) and Tangle (hated it) and am surprised by how many references the characters make to American politics, music, culture, etc. I doubt any American show ever references anything in Australia. Just curious: do Australians think about America a lot, does it play a role in their world consciousness, and in general, what do Australians think of America?

by Anonymousreply 29March 2, 2021 2:30 PM

Is Ryan Corr a drug addict for real? I know he was busted buying heroin or something I didn't want to think that when it was mentioned in another thread, but his tweets and Instagram pages always show him with really dicey characters on both sides of the pond.

by Anonymousreply 33March 3, 2021 12:45 AM

I'd like to know more about A Place to Call Home's Dominic Alburn (mentioned above), and also one of his fellow cast mates Tim Draxl (who plays Dr. Henry), and who I believe is gay in real life as well.

So many questions!

The reports were that Ryan Corr was a RL drug addict (heroin I think) and lost jobs over it, but he made a comeback some time later. Because of Covid I can't be sure whether he remains on track but I do hope so. He's very talented. (And is also in Love Child, which had a brilliant young cast: the best in recent years apart from maybe Underbelly Season 1). R24, Miranda Tapsell is also in the movie The Sapphires, which is well worth seeing.

Judy Davis is famous here for being prickly too, R28, but not bitchy. Just quick to take offence. Has been since she was very young. I will say her marriage has lasted forever, though. As an actress she's awesome, in the literal sense of the word. In Mystery Road she walks and talks as the character: neither voice nor gait is her own, yet both seem natural. I've seen her on stage in theatres large and tiny, and she's brilliant in every setting.

You're right about Aaron Pederson. The camera loves him, but he needs a really good director to act at his best. (Avoid Season 2 of MR, which lacks Davis and a halfway decent director or script.) In RL he's admirable, though. He is devoted to his brother, who has cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities, and has taken responsibility for him since Aaron was a kid. He also takes his role as an Aboriginal role model seriously. US-ians need to remember Indigenous people are only 2-3% of the Australian population, so kids really need role models. Judy Davis told the press, about Mystery Road, “It was not simply an acting gig for him, but a means to an end — trying to give courage and belief to the young Aboriginal kids who flocked around him constantly. He was like a rock star — which in a sense he is.”

R32, Gina Riley and Jane Turner are Australia's French and Saunders, in the sense that they have been close friends and also working partners since their 20s (they're turning 60 around now). They've worked together in ensembles much more than F&S, though. Both have long marriages. Gina's daughter Maggie McKenna starred in the original stage production of Muriel's Wedding, which is a musical: it was a hit and she was a very big hit. Quite likely to become a DL icon down the track if she keeps going. For Tasteful Friends fans, I've linked to the Melbourne house Jane Turner and her husband recently sold - very Not Fountain Lakes.

Remember the episode of ALL SAINTS when Ben’s character, Jared Levine, got raped when he went into the underground drug den? Scary stuff and pretty bold at the time.

by Anonymousreply 39March 3, 2021 6:41 PM

Ooo, looks quite ritzy and effluent, R38. Very cool to hear that Muriel’s Wedding (another Aussie fave) was adapted as a musical and that Gina’s daughter starred in it. Come to think of it, if I was going to make a musical of Muriel’s Wedding, Gina Riley would be my dream casting for Betty Heslop, Betty IS what would become of Kim twenty five years down the line, were it not for Kim’s pugnacious narcissism - plus she’s got a great voice and I’m sure Betty would get a “Losing my Mind” style torch song late in the second act. And then of course, I’d want Jane Turner for Deidre Chambers, who is for all intents and purposes a malevolent Kath Day Knight.

RAKE is a fun show...the actor, Richard Roxburgh is not conventionally handsome, but he’s hot and charismatic. Not to mention hysterically funny as Cleaver Greene. The guy who plays his son Fuzz pings...

by Anonymousreply 47March 14, 2021 2:28 AM

Hugh’s music is bad...that California Crooner Club he created is really awful. They can sing well enough, but the songwriting is bottom drawer.

Why is Tim Draxl naked all the time?

by Anonymousreply 48March 14, 2021 11:36 AM

R39 Ben Tari had some really suspect storylines when he was on All Saints. In one episode a teenage patient, struggling with his sexuality, got an erection while Jared prepped him for an operation . In another episode Jared helped treat a patient who sustained a serious rectal injury after he was penetrated with a sharp object while being hazed. I had no idea Jared was raped until now. Given the fact that Ben himself appears to be a gay man, it all seems a bit odd.

by Anonymousreply 49March 14, 2021 6:00 PM

Maybe he asked if the storylines r49? Some actors do things like that. They had another episode on male rape too, pretty daring for a macho nation like Australia.

I caught [italic]800 Words[/italic] with Ben’s [italic]All Saints[/italic] former costar Erik Thomson. I liked it. A shame that it only lasted three seasons. But Erik looks like he’s gone under the knife-his skin was so taut and he looked as if he had Botox as well. The Maori actor who portrayed his daughter’s boyfriend Ike is so beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 50March 17, 2021 3:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 51March 17, 2021 3:16 PM

R50 It's possible, I guess. Slightly off topic, but did anybody think it was odd that Jared, who was Jewish, came from a wealthy background? Rewatching the first season, it feels like a rather reckless(and unnecessary) stereotype.

by Anonymousreply 52March 18, 2021 12:38 AM

I did find it odd too r52. And that his grandmother was a Holocaust survivor who happened to be in the hospital the same day as the Nazi commandant of her concentration camp...sometimes they stretched credibility, but it was fun. I totally disagree with R42 about Judy Davis's stage presence. I've seen nearly everything she's done on stage (including that Lulu) and she's always been compelling and brilliant. Her Hedda Gabler was to die for, as was her Fool in King Lear. In recent years her theatre work has been mostly directing.

by Anonymousreply 87March 26, 2021 5:21 AM

I can't imagine Judy Davis as Lulu.

by Anonymousreply 88March 26, 2021 10:45 AM

Zoe Ventoura has to be one of the most beautiful actresses in Australia right now. Just lovely. Loved her as Mel in Rafters.

by Anonymousreply 89March 26, 2021 4:08 PM

R88 You can't imagine Judy Davis as a sexpot? Me neither.

Despite R87 having seen more of Davis onstage than I, my strongest memories of 'Lulu' were;

1. Davis being unable to hold the audience's attention,

2. her wearing Doc Martens which made a clomping sound on the stage floor whenever she moved.

But she can be fine on screen.

by Anonymousreply 90March 27, 2021 12:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 91March 27, 2021 1:16 AM

I don't know about that but I do think he's a dumb moron.

by Anonymousreply 92March 27, 2021 1:20 AM

It was horribly directed, R90, and her clothes and makeup were anti-sexy. She did what she was supposed to do, but that one was an uphill battle.

If you want to see her be sexy, you need Water Under the Bridge. She was never going to be Monroe, but in that she is flirtatious, appealing, careless, rich.

by Anonymousreply 93March 27, 2021 1:57 AM

R91, he won his court case. The judge said there was not enough evidence, though the FOUR complainants were credible witnesses. The main complainant, Christie Whelan-Browne, has been around for ages - including in a couple of stage shows with Geoffrey Rush - and has not complained before.

The ABC dropped him from his TV show with such alacrity and silence that it made me wonder what that set was like. But maybe the case just happened at an unfortunate moment in their scheduling.

by Anonymousreply 94March 27, 2021 2:02 AM

[quote] Water Under the Bridge.

That was SO long ago!

It was written by a precocious skinny homosexual named Sumner Locke Elliott.

He left dreary Sydney for the bright lights of New York where he worked behind the scenes in radio and dealt with luminaries like Joshua Logan.

His story "Fairyland" is a very entertaining account of his early life with a few sexy, furtive episodes.

I have a strong memory of David Campbell from 1996. He was nude on onstage in 'Love Valour Compassion' and he played gay in another show called 'Only Heaven Knows'. He was 22 years old and fresh-faced (though there was rumour he was the bastard son of an awful Scottish sot.

My second memory is from about ten years later at the Mardi Gras party. He and his father were both drunk and off their faces. They were accompanied by their Hong Kong girls, they jumped out of a taxi while their entourage ensured they weren't bothered by the gays, brushing them aside as they went to the VIP Area.

by Anonymousreply 131March 29, 2021 5:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 132March 29, 2021 5:24 AM

Too many alsos in that post. After several glasses of chard. but in terms of attractiveness: Bryce (but he's truly a dickhead), Jake, Patrick (i like geeks, and he seems like he'd be a total kinky boy and up for anything), Chris, Brett. The rest all finish evenly.

by Anonymousreply 133March 29, 2021 5:39 AM

Patrick could be doable if he got his two Lateral Incisors teeth capped. And Cameron had some sex appeal.

Unfortunately the 'experts' on this show choose couples for their potential for drama rather than compatibility.

Kamahl has been getting a lot of press the last couple of days due to racism he endured on Hey Hey It's Saturday back in the 1970s/1980s.

I never watched the show but I not surprised by things people told me. And know that Kamahl is speaking out he is getting told to 'get over it'. He was fucking humiliated in front of hundreds of thousands of people - why the fuck should he get over it.

Channel 9 owe him a huge apology. And just Kamahl, I heard they gave Marcia Hines a hard time too.

I thought 'Hey Hey It's Saturday' was revolting with all its mindless ocker jokes. But the show originated as a puppet show for kids so that may be an excuse for its general boneheaded witlessness.

But some of the morons on The Project are just as boneheaded and witless' (they always sit on the left hand side of the screen). That's a show for adolescents who need to be told what to think.

What do we know about Richard Roxburgh?

by Anonymousreply 146March 31, 2021 3:06 AM

I confuse Richard Roxburgh with David Wenham. Did he have abs in that movie '300' that were painted on?

by Anonymousreply 147March 31, 2021 3:15 AM

Wenham's in 300. Richard Roxburgh's in Moulin Rouge, no?

by Anonymousreply 148March 31, 2021 3:34 AM

Roxburgh is shaped oddly but I like his face and his bearing. Banty legged rascal of a man.

by Anonymousreply 149March 31, 2021 4:28 PM

Never heard any goss on Richard Roxburgh: no gay rumours, no diva behaviour. He's been married only once - for 16 years so far - to Silvia Colloca, whom he met on that Dracula movie, and who now fronts an Italian cooking show on TV. Three kids. They're not inner city hipsters: they live on Sydney's Northern Beaches, an area coveted for its combination of gorgeous scenery and a relaxed beachside lifestyle.

Before Colloca he dated Miranda Otto for a while. He's a very highly esteemed stage actor (a stunning Hamlet in the mid-90s). Apart from Rake, he has also done several prestige TV mini-series in which his performances have won big acclaim. He's intelligent in a way not a lot of actors are: he had an Economics degree before he went to NIDA and he is able to talk about Shakespearean and Chekhovian roles like a director rather than an actor. He directed the movie Romulus My Father, starring Eric Bana. In his spare time he has written at least one children's book.

Both Roxburgh and David Wenham were in Moulin Rouge. Roxburgh had the far larger role, as the wicked Duke.

Whatever anybody make think of John Howard, Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott or Scott Morrison politically by all accounts they treat their staff well and with respect.

I know somebody who worked for Abbott and said Gillard was so nice to her even though she was working for Abbott, who was very pleasant.

I've heard nothing but horror stories of Rudd & Turnbull and theor attitude to staff not to mention Gareth Evans and the late John Fahey (go riddances to bad rubbish by all accounts).

(R29) I really enjoyed "A Place to Call Home" and especially the epilogue at the end where we learn what happened to each character. I am currently watching "Love My Way" (32 episodes) and sorry, I find the actors, the characters and the story line extremely irritating. The male lead is either ranting or bursting into tears. I always watch a series to the very end, so will stick with this one. I just finished watching the English series "The Grand" starring the wonderful Susan Hampshire. It concerns the happenings in a high class hotel. The footman, Clive has one episode where he's attracted to men and he is a hunk.

by Anonymousreply 176April 2, 2021 10:35 PM

He's same sex attracted for ONE episode? How Ally McBeal of him.

by Anonymousreply 177April 2, 2021 10:56 PM

It's absolutely true that there was a lot of sexist and racist humour on Australian TV, as there was throughout society, in the 1970s. In the 60s and early 70s a lot of the writers were older guys who had written for the vaudeville stage in the 30s and 40s. Hey! Hey! indulged in that kind of humour too, but they weren't the only show to denigrate Kamahl. Although most of the slights were from a racist angle, I think at the time it was just the lazy way to do what the performers really wanted, which was to take him down a peg - not because he was black but because he was conceited. Performers of colour like Marcia Hines and Chelsea Brown doubtless scored some racist "jokes" too, but on nothing like the scale of those aimed at Kamahl. You could see the genuine affection for them.

All I'll say is, on Kamahl's This is Your Life the only prominent Australian "showbiz personality" to appear was...Rupert Murdoch.

P.S. Somers is insufferable too, in exactly the same way as Kamahl. Nobody watched Hey! Hey! to see him.

Pocock is the quintessential virtue-signaller.

Years ago he announced to the media he would not marry his good lady wife unless those poor homosexuals could do the same.

Four years ago he announced to the media that he would not procreate with his good lady wife because it's 'bad for the environment'.

by Anonymousreply 281April 12, 2021 6:29 AM

by Anonymousreply 282April 12, 2021 6:38 AM

Scott Morrison is managing NOTHING during the epidemic. Everyone knows if it weren't for the State Premiers we'd be in the same boat as the US and the UK.

It was somewhat surprising that his government put stimulus into the economy as soon as the pandemic hit (nobody had judged them as Keynesian), but even that was not well managed across affected industries, and the stopping of the benefits has been done in a completely arbitrary manner. He keeps warbling on about opening the borders again, even though most people were meant to have the Astra Zeneca vaccine which doesn't protect against the South African variant. The man is a moron. Fortunately he offended the States last week so they're now elbowing him out of the calamitous mess he's made of vaccine acquisition and distribution and taking it over.

Years ago a PBS station where I live began broadcasting "The Doctor Blake Mysteries," starring Craig McLachlan - a show whose early seasons were excellent, it did become more twee over time.

Anyway, McLachlan was hit with numerous accusations that he acted inappropriately with a number of female actresses on stage when he was playing Dr. Frank N Furter onstage in the The rocky Horror Show. I think the accusations were made back in 2018 or 2019?

Is McLachlan's career really over? Has he been cancelled? The court case is over, he's been cleared of charges, (I think).

And yes, I know that there was an attempt to revive the cancelled Dr. Blake program by having Jean take over the mystery investigations...

The judge in the McLachlan case said that there was insufficient evidence to convict, but noted that the THREE female complainants were credible witnesses.

The ABC did shoot a season called The Blake Mysteries where the Nadine Garner character took over, but it apparently didn't do well and they've made no attempt to re-engage him as far as I know.

Christie Whelan-Browne, the main complainant, has never been out of work since.

by Anonymousreply 349April 22, 2021 2:15 AM

[quote]Don't they use the English language in Australia?

"They" being Aboriginal people, R348. So, no.

"Country" used in that way is from Indigenous culture, which had 250 different languages, plus many dialects. The word has been translated into English so the audience doesn't have to learn the language of the area to which it is being welcomed, but "country" does not mean Australia. It means the land of the Aboriginal nation to which you are being welcomed (if Sydney CBD, the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation). Aboriginal culture is deeply anchored in land, so it means a lot more than the real estate. It means 60,000+ years of ancestry, of produce, of climate knowledge and so on.

As R349 suggested, this type of uninformed outburst is why nobody likes you.

As hot as Brenton Thwaites is, he is a really limited talent. I’m surprised that he’s made it this far. So much for the stereotype of the Uber prepared Australian actors. Even in his better films, he doesn’t really add anything to the films. But he looks like a blond beach bum god, so there’s that.

by Anonymousreply 364May 18, 2021 3:38 PM

Yeah, "uber-prepared Australian actors" usually doesn't include those who come from Home and Away. Not detracting from C Hemsworth's professionalism, which appears to be high, nor the talents of some of the character-part players over the years, but being a blond beach bum god, or the teen female equivalent, is the main reason you get on that show. I don't know whether they still do, but they used to cast out of Iron Man competitions on Sydney's beaches. (That casting gig is a great job for a DLer.)

The uber-prepared ones are NIDA and WAAPA grads, mainly. You do sometimes see them early in their careers on TV shows of modest merit, but when they finally get a break they have three years of heavy training behind them. Sarah Snook was on Packed to the Rafters, the show that also gave us Hugh Sheridan and Jessica Marais (Magic City). All NIDA grads.

Who's cum inside them?

What’s going on with Alex Russell and Sullivan Stapleton? What do we know about them?

by Anonymousreply 373June 7, 2021 1:23 PM

I caught Sullivan on Wendy Williams a while back...seems like a very friendly fellow. Older than I thought too - 43!

by Anonymousreply 374June 8, 2021 11:45 PM

We mentioned Sullivan at R270.

Shane Cortese. A Kiwi, but so cute. What has he been doing since [italic]Nothing Trivial[/italic] ended? I like that show too.

I want to know more about Josh Jackson. He was in a movie about Peter Allen and recently played the older brother of Brenton Thwaites in I MET A GIRL. Foxy man! Was he any good as Allen?

Has anyone had Shaun Micallef? He's gotta be the most handsome daddy on Australian TV in decades. Speaking of Australian daddies, is anyone else obsessed with David Boon? Major bi vibes from him

You mean Joel Jackson, R377.

You can look out for him in The Newsreader with Anna Torv, coming to Australian TV screens soon and no doubt a streaming service near you thereafter.

by Anonymousreply 379July 21, 2021 8:35 AM

Joel, right. Thanks r379.

Andrew O'Keefe is hot as fuck and confirmed bi

Are Baz Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin really serious cokeheads?

by Anonymousreply 382August 2, 2021 3:57 PM

Watching Joel Jackson in the miniseries about Peter Allen. The boy who plays Allen as a kid is pretty good. Joel is kind of cute too. I've seen him sing on YouTube a few times as well.

by Anonymousreply 383August 13, 2021 1:00 AM

I doubt Baz and Catherine are really serious about anything (except, in her case, about sets and costumes).

by Anonymousreply 384August 13, 2021 4:00 AM

Looks like Luke Pegler HAS retired from acting…all of his YouTube videos and most of his photos are gone from the internet.

by Anonymousreply 385August 23, 2021 1:10 PM

Watching SEA PATROL on Tubi…what a ridiculous show. But some of the actors are foxy looking. But those plot lines though…every week someone gets shot, taken hostage or receive some life threatening illness or injury. Who wrote this shite?

And where can I get more Ian Stenlake or Conrad Coleby?

by Anonymousreply 386September 28, 2021 5:05 PM

You're most likely to see Ian Stenlake in a stage musical, R386, but he's 52 now. I believe Conrad Coleby is in DL fave A Place to Call Home.

I intend to rewatch APTCH again. It has to be one of the most satisfying nighttime dramas I’ve seen. Better than most of the recent US crap that I’ve seen. The women characters were such badasses and the gay characters so much more well rounded.

Will I get to see Pete Murray’s bare arse if I skip thru the first few episodes of SAS Australia?

Is Costa Georgiadis gay? After reading this article I’m inclined to say yes, definitely

Why are Australian television and films financed by the government? It must be impossible for Aussie film companies to make any real money…how does it all work, exactly?

by Anonymousreply 391October 15, 2021 4:00 PM

Who’s had Bert Newton?

by Anonymousreply 392November 2, 2021 11:28 AM

Has Craig Stott given up on his movie career? 🥺 Inquiring minds want to know. There was an old thread on him but I didn’t feel like necro-ing it.

[quote] Is Costa Georgiadis gay? After reading this article…

The article is paywalled and he's a scruffy-looking, maudlin, overemotional SJW bore who's more concerned with saving 'souls' than growing plants .

Did anyone here ever meet Tim Conigrave? What was he really like?

by Anonymousreply 396January 26, 2022 2:35 PM

R396 He was nothing like that highly-romanticised, saccharine movie version.

He was short and had a turned up nose and a snippy attitude reminding me of Davey Wavey.

He was utterly manic and 'smart-arse' because in those days it was fashionable to wear silly clothing and be as outrageous as possible.

His brother describes him as having Tourette's.

Thanks R397. I have seen some photographs of him. He was also very thin. The documentary is probably more truthful than the film. Loved both of them.

Tim admitted to his flaws at least, including his wild infidelity. John's father was a first-class cunt though.

Yes, TV documentaries are supposed to be truthful and factual.

But current "documentaries" like to blur the lines, ignore some facts and go off-topic to inject as much emotion as possible.

by Anonymousreply 399January 29, 2022 9:12 PM

R391 That is an enormous question and there's a tedious answer on Wiki.

Film and TV is subsidised in Australia the same way it is in Britain, Canada, France etc — and I suspect —in the USA.

I know he US state governments pay for productions in their state.

Australian films had a scheme called "Ten-Bee" which operated as "money-laundering" or "boom-of-the harbour" tax avoidance in the 1980s.

Funny how Ryan Corr’s current CV makes no mention of his role in Holding the Man…why do you think that is? Is homophobia at play here? I think that he got some of the best reviews of his career for his role as Tim Conigrave…
