David Campbell-Australian Cabaret singer

And sometimes actor.%0D %0D Never really happened in the States. %0D %0D I saw him at MAKING PORN in NYC with some other guys around 1997.I thought he was gay but read he is married.%0D %0D Was looking at a recent video and he looks almost pudgy.%0D %0D I also thought there were a couple of nudes photos floating around out there%0D %0D

Certainly always thought he was straight - but very gay-friendly - after all the guy works in sydney theatre/canaret circles - he couldn;t not be! Would be career suicide!%0D Some arty nudie shots appeared in the soft porn photography magazine 'Blue' here in Oz several years ago - but he seems to have bulked up a little since then...

Straight.%0D %0D And very unlikely to have been making porn in 1997.

"Taking the Wheel" has several superb tracks, including the title cut, a beautiful Craig Carnelia song, and my favorite version of "Old Devil Moon". And Campbell wears a leather jacket in the cover photo.

I always felt like the album had a very gay vibe (and not just because it's mostly show tunes) -- as if it could have only been recorded by, and appreciated by, us.

I guess I was wrong.

Wait you were just strolling by some place and saw him filming porn? Can you expand on the story please?

by Anonymousreply 4March 26, 2011 2:18 AM

he did a nude layout in Blue magazine

by Anonymousreply 5March 26, 2011 2:21 AM

He's gotten chunky like Michael Buble.

by Anonymousreply 6March 26, 2011 2:35 AM

R3 you nailed it for me too. I love that album and my faves are the songs you mentioned.

In five minutes (or was it years?), he went from cute boy-toy, Les-Solomon-bait-style, to overweight schlumpf. (Who's Les Solomon? Australian purveyor of cute Australian boy-toys spoon-fed into the NY cabaret scene, none of whom have been heard of since they lost their boy-toyness.)

The "Thanks" on his records (including Barbara Cook) rate a big MARY!

by Anonymousreply 9March 26, 2011 12:50 PM

though a super nice guy with a family who travel with him they keep trying to make him happen here in NY but I think his time has expired.

by Anonymousreply 10March 26, 2011 1:49 PM

His new all-Broadway album is very good, too, with some great GUYS & DOLLS stuff and a wonderful song from the new CATCH ME IF YOU CAN that opens soon.

by Anonymousreply 11March 26, 2011 6:21 PM

MAKING PORN was a off-off bway play%0D He was in the audience with a group a guys, not onstage

When DC made his first big splash in the States/NY cabaret scene, he was a "protege" of Michael Feinstein but supposedly would only let MF handle his career, not his private parts.%0D %0D When he turned MF down, MF lost interest and DC's career stalled - then when his visa expired he had to leave the US since MF was no longer listed as his "sponsor".%0D %0D

by Anonymousreply 13March 29, 2011 7:03 PM

I thought he was gay as well OP.

by Anonymousreply 14June 25, 2014 1:02 AM

He has been working out lately and now looks hot again. Seems to be a nice guy - def straight, but gay friendly as a few others have noted. Did "martin Guerre" in London a few years back, but career wise, went back to cabaret. Currently co- hosts a dreadful morning T.V. show here in Oz.

by Anonymousreply 15June 25, 2014 3:04 AM

He was really good in Assassins. Shame he has to play the douche in morning TV but I guess musical theatre and the occasional duet with pops doesn't pay the bills.

by Anonymousreply 16November 11, 2019 10:14 AM

He’s probably secretly gay and trying to come off as a masculine family man, so he doesn’t disappoint his Daddy, Jimmy Barnes, lead singer and famed former druggo/alco of Cold Chisel game. David Campbell is very tasteless on morning tv, making constant double meaning jokes that seem awkward on him and tv at that time of day.

by Anonymousreply 17November 11, 2019 7:16 PM

He pings to high heavens.

I was involved in the 90s NYC cabaret scene and spent some time around David. We even fooled around a couple of times. Drunken make-out sessions with a little bit of oral, nothing more. Little cock, but cute as hell.

by Anonymousreply 24February 17, 2020 4:27 AM

I saw him in concert at the Cinegrill in Hollywood in '97 (around the same time as the above clip). He was (a) incredibly talented and (b) super cute. I also thought he might be gay, especially because he included the song "Yard Sale" on his CD [italic]Taking the Wheel[/italic] and in his set.

A few years later he provided the singing voice of Joseph in the animated film [bold]Joseph: King of Dreams[/bold], with songs by John Bucchino. (On various recordings, David proved to be an incredibly adept interpreter of Bucchino's music.) I thought greater success was ahead for him in the States, but it was not to be -- although he seems to have worked and recorded fairly regularly in Australia for the past 20 years.

I guess this sort of stuff gets him corporate gigs and Girls Night Out / Xmas party crowds.
